Chanting intersperses with screams, yowls and faint ribbits as a spew of fire lights the last candle aflame. Wax drips down and runs into grooves on the floor, closing the last segment of the circle. A paw bowls the candlestick over, but it's too late—the air laughs with profane power. Across something vast it reaches—
The dirt path is in a sufficient state of disrepair that you'd have a rough time driving a sedan down it, but a dune buggy will do just fine, and it seems to be going cityward enough that Solaire will point them down it and not suggest going offroad. There's a whole lot of nothing out here but shrubs, cacti and the rare bird. The aforementioned predators are nowhere to be seen just yet, so there's some time to kill if he has more questions or wants to do some conjuration with the buggy on cruise control.
He's going to hook up the cat keyboard to TTS, actually, would Solaire like to pick from the default voices?
He'll pick a older male voice and give it a spin.
"How do I do the question voice and the yell voice."
"You've been typing slashes as question marks, but the shift key might be hard for you, lemme remap that real quick.... okay, numeral one will now be an exclamation point and the slash a question mark."
"I am smart," he informs Cam. "Mom puts cartoons on the TV. The house is very boring for nothing to do."
"No. They lie around and sleep and fight and poop outside the litter box. They watch the cartoons too sometimes but many only understand a little and most don't learn the letters."
Sniff.
"But many wizard cats can read. Because you need to be smart to be wizard good."
"I've never seen one in the city. I saw a human in the bunker looked like doing spells but he had a horrible octopus monster in the hat on his head. Horrible octopus monster was maybe controlling him maybe being the wizard?"
"I think all cats understand some English. Like 'stop' and 'bad' and 'go away' and 'treats'. Many cats understand very simple sentences like 'stop biting or no treats'. Few cats understand many words and complicated things like this. Some because don't care about to learn and some are too stupid probably."
"Huhhhh. So, in my world, there are cats. But there are no cats as smart as you. I think that - even if there are some cats who are a lot like the dumbest cats you know, the ones from my world might still be different. Because I never got any cat language from any other summoner, and the pile of guys who are zombies now had somebody who learned enough cat language to give me some."
"You trade language when they summon you? Maybe your cats are broken. Maybe Bombalurina is right and cats are blessed by God to inherit the earth but God did not bless your cats. I thought it is nonsense but the pile of guys talked about God and summoned you so maybe God is real."
"Like with the circle I made you but with a lot more words to say what I’m allowed to do."
("Lots more words to say what you're allowed to do" sounds about right for humans, yeah.)
"What do you usually do?"
"With your magic? You said you can make food?"
Also, he's going to point out some kind of shambling bleach-white assemblage of... bone? that's rolling over a crest yonder, on an intercept for their buggy.
"Yes, I can make whatever I want. You let me know if you guys are hungry or thirsty. What, uh, is that thing?"
It's a weird hodgepodge moving skeleton the size of a small vehicle, constructed of bones of varying sizes and degrees of weathering, with a huge skull that's not actually a skull but a fusion of disparate bone plates into a facsimile of a skull's shape.
"Bone monster. I don't know what it's called."
It loses traction on the sandy dirt and tumbles over itself, breaking apart into a large pile of bones across the road ahead.
"It doesn't die unless you break the head."
Surely enough, the bones are rattling and beginning to draw back together.
