Select,
Apologies for the lack of a proper salutation, but your name did not make it down to the Mendevian line, and I only hope my barely-existent attempt at an address was enough to identify you at all.
I've heard some rather fascinating rumors about your existence. Whatever of them is true, if you're a new Iomedean in one of the Chelish forts, you deserve a welcome from more of Her Church than I imagine you can find there. I expect you wrote Lastwall, as did I for confirmed information about you, but I hear they're endlessly busy. How is your fort doing? How are you doing, with all the changes? It must be immensely complicated. Is there anything you need that a stranger on the neighboring border might possibly be of help with?
The Goddess be with you,
Ser Marcus Aemine
(Yes, it's an completely reasonable decision that he would not change, it just bothers him anyway to be unable to see the sunlight.)
Then he will pick a curious-looking group to sit with. (The alternative being standing in the middle of the room and introducing himself, which is sometimes done in Mendev but would be... what was it the Select said... strange to the point of comedy, here, he's pretty sure.) He even manages not to smile at them.
"Marcus Aemine, from over on the Mendevian line. I'll be staying around for a while." He wears Iomedae's symbol in the distinct paladin style, on his shoulder rather than a necklace, so they can probably tell that much, unless paladins are even less familiar around here than Guiu's list implied.
"I think I won't – if you've been serving under a Select with the Lastwall rulebook for months you're probably not doing anything that'd inspire me otherwise. But I won't tell you something might not surprise me."
"Well, let me know if you start feeling like a few minutes' conversation is making you want to abandon your mildly Evil hobbies, or whatever it is I should be lecturing you about."
"Oh, there's so many, you've got no idea. It's not that you've gotta not do any, just do more Good things than Evil ones and it should all go fine, but if you're short on Good things it'll help to be careful. And if you're a paladin you've gotta be careful all the time."
"Oh, you know. Writing mean letters. Being careless spending an official budget. Touching Chelish soul money at all, probably. Insulting people when there's no call for it. For all I know excessive lecturing might count."
"It can be both sometimes, but you're right. I'm lucky being careless at conversation doesn't count."
Marcus stares at him, hands firmly in his lap. "...All right, I will grant you this is a little funny, but I'm not going to be an idiot about it and I suggest you try that too."
Unimpressed look. "Well, depends if you're handing it to paladins. I imagine most of you've got better things to do with it."
"I figured you weren't, and I figured having it for a moment without using it wouldn't do anything, but I've been known to be wrong about things. So I try not to have the sorts of habits where if I'm occasionally wrong about something I won't last the month."
...Oh. Of course people would think that. It's a lot easier to imagine.
He raises his voice slightly, to make it easier for the other tables to hear. "No, that is not how it works. I wouldn't be looking at you like this if it was. We don't get warnings, we just Fall, after any single Evil thing done on purpose, doesn't matter how small it is. I've seen it happen enough times to be really fucking careful."
A woman at the table speaks up. "Clerics don't fall for doing something nice even if they do it every week for years. Evil clerics I mean."
