"Wait, wait! Two hundred years in the future?" interrupts Temeraire. "Was Napoleon in your history books? Was he defeated?"

"Yeah, battle of Waterloo, but, again, no dragons featured, so don't count on that!"

"No dragons? But that would..." He frowns. "So many things would be different about the world without dragons. It occurs to me that it's very strange your world would have a Napoleon in that case... How did you say you got here again?"

"Why, is he a dragon? - I was attempting to create a teleportation spell but I was not aiming for this island, let alone this universe."

"No! But so many places would be completely different without dragons -- China especially -- I suppose they aren't as common in England or France," he puzzles. "But you must tell us what you know of how he was defeated, so we may do the same--"

Laurence lays a hand on his nearest claw. "My dear, we must first get off this island," he says gently.

"Right!" says Temeraire. "So we should ask-- A teleportation spell! Such things are impossible, are they not? But then how did she get here? My friend from the Royal Society could tell us, I am sure, if we could but get a letter to him... But we must write down everything we observe, if we can. Miss Swan, are there other spells you can do?" He brings a huge eye down to the ground to examine her more closely. "Perhaps something else we could use? A way to get a map, or more food?"

"I must caution you," oh she's picking up old timey speak by exposure, she wonders if she sounds unremarkable or uncanny when she does that, "that not only am I relatively new to magic, it's almost a lost art in my world and I have been reconstructing and independently developing it. That said, maps and creating food are not obviously in scope. - also it's dangerous, most saliently because here I am in the wrong universe two hundred years ago, but also in other ways. I shouldn't like for anyone to copy me without my acquiescence and tutoring."

"Oh," he says, disappointed.

"Did I not tell you she was mad?"

"Sorry about her," Granby says. "Iskierka, I think we had better go see about another scouting mission--" and leads her away.

Right, so now that that vain hope has been shot down they can get back to actual work. "Miss Swan, rations are twice a day at first bell and tenth. The ladies' tent is--" he points-- "and I'm sure Mrs. Pemberton and Roland would be glad of your company. Please excuse me--" and he hurries after Granby to ask what direction they went so they know where not to look next time.

Okay, she's going to go sit near the ladies' tent and open her backpack and go hunting for runes that can do anything useful in her textbook and notes.

The aviators confer about what to do next and another expedition is sent out. A few other men return from foraging, and a few go out. Some of the sailors sit a ways down the beach, joking and complaining amongst themselves, doing nothing particularly useful.

The sun is merciless.

She has sunscreen! She slathers a layer on. Eventually: "I think I can do something about the heat within camp, would that be good? It’ll use up a sheet of paper but perhaps if it works you’ll provide some to supplement mine, if you have any?"

She addresses this question to Temeraire since the ranking humans are elsewhere.

"I suppose," he says somewhat dubiously. "The men seem to do all right with the heat, only they do keep drinking water... Er, Ferriss," he calls to a nearby aviator, "have we any paper?"

"Paper! No, not a scrap; Monsieur de Guignes did not see fit; besides if we did I am sure it would first be saved for map-making."

"Well, what I have will do for the time being."

She has her compass and protractor and she can work out the whole spell. She can probably do desalination too but that sounds harder and she'd like them to take her seriously first.

She walks to the center of the camp with her completed diagram, and whispers to herself about cold in French.

The various men (and women) stop what they're doing, look around in surprise, first glancing at the sky, then upon seeing that it is still cloudless and bright they glance over at May.

"Was that you?!"

The aviators (in green coats) look mostly in shock. Several of the sailors start muttering. One of them yells something in Chinese and charges at May.

- is someone going to stop him or does she have to do something drastic??

Yes!! This guy is going to grab the yelling guy and several other nearby aviators will also dogpile yelling guy to stop him.

Yelling guy is still yelling, now with added thrashing. They're going to have to tie him up.

They do that.
