Only about half of her left side gets sprayed!  This water is muddier and generally grosser than the stuff coming down from the sky.

There's a stairwell going down into the ground, up ahead.  Someone with what looks like ribs glowy enough to be seen through their coat goes down it.  It doesn't have a door and does have a roof.

This is a really big unfun scifaire. Maybe if you know the fandom better or the weather is nice it makes more sense but she is increasingly unsure that suffices to explain.

Any likely looking establishments she can try her luck at which don’t involve going underground? Going underground is rarely her first choice.

After a bit of walking she can find another convenience store with its lights on.  ...But there's no one behind the counter, and it has a weird door that it's not immediately obvious how to open.

Maybe that'd work fine if she could read the signs but she cannot. At this point she is going to start trying to assess the helpfulness of pedestrians by their cosplay.

She has her pick of:

  • man with a flannel tied around his waist and an umbrella that has clear plastic hanging down the sides, forming a protective tube around him.
  • lady with a spiked collar, flower-print dress, and long black hair, who seems remarkably unbothered by the rain
  • really really tall person with a slightly beastly face
  • a twitchy girl with pale hair and one metal arm, singing kind of loudly and only a little well
  • someone who's either very tall for a kid or very babyfaced for an adult (...or wearing stilts, looking closer at their legs)
  • a pack of boisterous people hanging out underneath an awning over there

It's sort of academically interesting that these people all register psychically as human. Like, it's not unheard of to have all-human towns, but they do not tend to cater to inhabitants who want to look like they're Ambiguously Interspecies.

She doesn't like any of these options very much but she will veer in the direction of the flower-print dress lady.

Flower-print dress lady swerves to avoid her!

...uh. Okay. How about the tall person? The Ambiguously Interspecies one not the stilts kid.

She can succeed in getting them backed up against a wall!  They look unhappy to be in this situation, though in more of a scared way than an aggressive one.

She doesn't want to corner anyone! Sorry to bother you, I just need directions to whatever sort of person someone who is very, very lost should talk to, like an embassy or public service of some kind.

They make a frightened chirp noise when she starts talking in their head.

"Uh, uh - what?"

I'm very lost and need help. I can't read signs because I don't know the local language. Where should I go?

"Uh, uh uh - library?  Or, a, a, netbar?  Might be open?  Cafe if you can wait till morning?"

Can you direct me to a library?

"Um, th - that way."  They gesture in the general direction Bella was already heading.  (And away from the one they were.)

What does the sign for it look like please? - you can just think it at me, you don't seem familiar with subtle arts -

"I don't have anything for that -"

You can just think it at me. I can pick up what you're trying to show me same as I can understand what you're trying to say to me.

The person thinks about the façade of a building and approximately how they'd get there from here.  Projectively.

Thanks. Sorry again to trouble you.

She heads off in that direction.

The most straightforward path involves going right by the people under the awning!  Does she avoid them?

She would like to give them personal space but she's not going to outright cross the street unless they get more threatening than they presently seem.

There is not a ton of personal space to be found on this stretch of sidewalk.

One of them whistles at her and a few of the others laugh.  "Lookin' wet tonight, little lady."

She doesn't want to brandish her knife; she can't hurt herself with it but that's only because it's enchanted, so it implies and invites an altercation she's really not qualified for. She can brandish her other option, though! It's raining, she points out blandly to the lot of them.

Reactions vary.  There's a range of acute fear to putting hands up in placating surrender while still smiling to continued leering.  But if she keeps moving she can get by them.
