The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours. (Or: In which Ophelia found the source of the rakghoul plague, and Mace Windu found *her*.)

As for "Jedi seize power"...

It would be expedient, certainly, but she doesn't think that it's quite necessarily come to that, yet.

There is no chaos, there is harmony, you say so yourselves - and she's sure that there must be at least one good man* in the Senate.  Aside from Senator Amidala, who, while admirably mostly-incorrupt, is far too close.

*gender- and species-neutral

Find them, and help them establish harmony from chaos.  The system coming together in times of unprecedented distress is far more...  Narratively resonant...  Than an outside force acting upon it, and stories matter.

Nah it's pretty much just Padme

Well, surely, there are lots! There's Mon Mothma, and Bail Organa, and... um... Garm Bel Iblis... give them a minute.

Three is enough to start from.

Here they are learning the dark arts (politics) from a Sith Lord.

On the other hand, they don't have their old Sith Lord problem so much any more, and they aren't all dead, so under the circumstances...

In truth, at the moment this is fairly close to disaster relief.  A disaster has occurred, after all.  It's just worse than they may yet know, depending on the circumstances.

"All right. We seize the Senate, to ease the transition. Declare a state of emergency, proclaim... I think it has to be Senator Amidala, as Chancellor. She's the only one who'd be sure to cooperate."

Terrible taste in men aside, she's not stupid.

"Then the other two and scrape together whatever other Senators we can, for public support. We can roll Senatorial procedure back and hopefully win the war or bring Dooku to terms in the chaos."

"...Consider, Master Windu, that Senator Amidala is married to Anakin Skywalker and that that might pose a problem.  It might not.  Senator Amidala's resistance to influence is nigh beyond reproach.  But even so, scandal...

"Then again, this only needs last for now.  If she holds until a new Chancellor is elected - and she will, I believe, rather than cling to power unearned and unasked-for...

"It could work.

"And we do need a solution sooner rather than later.

"But I think we should at least bring in those other two to consult, given their domain expertise and that the Order is sure they're actually good people."

...Is now a good time to mention that Corellia invoked its ancient and ceremonial and de jure and apparently very real right to enter total isolation and not aid the Republic at the beginning of the Clone Wars? And Bel Iblis has been there since? They didn't say they liked him, just that he was trustworthy.

As for Bail-

"No."

"I am - truly sorry, Masters Jedi, I am sure you have the best interests of the Republic in mind, and that Chancellor Palpatine was killed by the Sith Lord - or was the Sith Lord? - but... I won't help you conquer the Republic. I beseech you not to do this. I believe you, but imagine what the public will think - the Chancellor killed, obviously by the Force, and the next moment you take power? It's too scandalous, it doesn't matter what the truth is. There were limits to your reputation among the public, even before, and now - I think you are dooming yourselves to destruction."

"For the love of -- stop deciding the thing that I'm trying to tell you to do is 'take over the Republic', how many times do I have to tell you that a coup's not going to kriffing work before you understand --"

There is a sad 'clunk' as she facepalms.

"Thank you for coming here, Senator Organa.

"Since the Jedi Order cannot seem to get this simple concept through their heads, for reasons that are unknown to me but may be related to the fact that this Temple is located atop a blasted Dark-Side Force Nexus and that's never helped anyone's reasoning skills, I am asking you to help us organize a response to this mess, with the Order's support.  Not execute the very hostile takeover Palpatine planned.  You are a man* of proven integrity; if we can but get enough people to move with you I think this will be solved."

*species- and gender-neutral, obviously

"Palpatine was, and, regrettably, is, a Sith Lord.  I wasn't sufficiently prepared to trap his ghost, and that escaped.  He won't get to do that twice."

Nobody has ever actually tried talking to the Jedi High Council like this before. It's not that it doesn't work. Nothing bad actually happens to you. Just, nobody's tried it before.

"...Madam, I am Chairbeing of the Senate Security Committee, I've sworn oaths, if I try to - expedite things outside procedure - I would be letting down trillions of people across the galaxy -" he is visibly tormented.

He opened Alderaan to refugees from the CIS long ago, and somehow mysteriously he seems to have ended up with hundreds of horrifyingly dangerous terrorist cells and mass civil unrest and been obliged to accept the kindly assistance of Chancellery Security in quelling them - all right he can see where the Jedi are coming from on Palpatine.

(This is almost sad, a part of him is tempted to offer Darth Mourne a few years to make her own moves, but alas he loves winning more than he loves a challenge.)

"You're not acting outside procedure, if you are in fact acting to expedite the procedure using the tangle of contradictory snarls Palpatine left the law in."

She has a plan!  If you interpret this order that way and use these and those - Palpatine had quite a few things he just didn't feel like bothering with, so they actually got much more room to move without him - then it routes around a lot of the gridlock --

...All right, maybe.

He does want to pursue peace talks with Dooku, though, if this story is really true.

"It bears note that Dooku is, by his own testimony, a willing co-conspirator in Palpatine's ploys.  He wants an empire as much as Palpatine does.  And he's awfully racist.  But at least he doesn't want a return to the Empire of my day, I hope."

"I hope so too."

"The way of the Sith, treachery is. To betray his master, Dooku could be persuaded." He sounds sorrowful.

"Oh, definitely.  It just bears noting that he is a Fallen Jedi."

One of the Lost, in fact. He wonders now, if ever any of that was more than a lie, those principles of his.

...All right. Conditional on them accepting parley with Dooku and looking to end the war - he'll do it, he'll support Padmé for interim Chancellor.

Be it so.

...Someone should tell her, shouldn't they.

...Force help her, she'll do it.

"We need an interim Chancellor, quickly, what with Palpatine having killed himself, and the Jedi think you're the best hope we have."

"Of course. When do you need me to start?"

"Um - Padmé -"

A part of him, a new part of him he doesn't at all recognise, wants to keep quiet and slink away and hope he's forgotten about and that the Chancellery Office can quietly protect him from the Jedi and the public eye and everything.

But that's not going to work, is it.

"What - does the Jedi Order want with me."
