Good boy.

"Come on now," she says, "you knew it was going that way. That's why you've been so upset. You might as well admit it."

His hand does not return the squeeze. Rather, Ophel looks as if he wishes to snatch it away from Voltur’s grip, to back away so that there is no risk of his touch.

“If you will not tell me, somebody else will. Speak. What entreaties?”

"It is no great secret," he grinds out. "There is - a great foreign king, of whom I know little, but with whom I have exchanged gifts and ambassadors. There are those within the Church who share my concerns." Like the Most High, for example. "I thought - I cannot be the only man alive with these concerns. It was time to consult them."

Galora may as well not be in the room.

He had thought the agony had eaten all it could already. There is a star collapsing in his chest and it constricts the air in his lungs.

“Speak to me of your concerns, not to foreign kings.”

He does not sound angry. Does not betray much of the agony, lest he be silenced again by a human deciding that elves are too fragile for real conversations.

“I ask you one more time, Voltur. What exactly did you say?”

"...I have spoken to you of them. Many times. I asked what they had done, in matters of empire. How they had weighed the concerns of the clergy. It was not - personal."

“It becomes personal when you take the concern as your wife and queen, when all the kingdoms of the world know of the instability of Valynrest’s royal family, and when you would take me into bed while betraying my trust to all of Arwis.”

He has stood up now, something changing in his eyes. An absence of hope.

The blue is dull.

“Tell me truly. Tell me as I have feared. Is this– all this– because I was unable to bear you a second child?”

Everything was different after that night when they lost the baby.

Voltur had behaved perfectly, had said all the right things, but– grief can change people, even unprecedented grief, expectations for a human child subverted– and Ophel had noticed a change in him ever since. The beginnings of the rift began.

He had always tried to tell himself otherwise.

Nothing else makes sense.
