These are pretty easy to answer.

And so now she's a working mage! She never expected to be a working mage.

She goes to work. As a mage. Doing magic. Which is legal. She wishes she could safely live here and collect alien boyfriends and be seen as a real entire person with useful magic all the time.

People sometimes do thank her! Sometimes there's something on the sidewalk she's supposed to depict and skip. Sometimes she's in somebody's way and they glare at her before jumping over the fresh pavement that follows in her wake.

She dutifully says "you're welcome" in a quiet voice when thanked. She tries to figure out if there is some way to do her job while also not being in people's way but if that's impossible...

...Yeah, she's already not used to being treated well, and they said to be polite. Why wouldn't she be expected to put up with glares. She was so excited about being seen as a real whole person but maybe that was silly. When not at work she researches whether it's illegal to glare back so she can decide whether to risk trying it and seeing what happens.

It doesn't appear to be illegal to glare! Impolite, of course.

She can inquire as to whether she’s expected to be polite to people who are impolite to her. Probably not but she’s being very literal.

"If they're really causing a problem you can call somebody in about it but you shouldn't retaliate, that can escalate and you're a government contractor when you're on the job."

"Government contractors don't retaliate?"

"- not if they want to keep their jobs? Look, if someone attacks you and you can't run away or call for help, you can hit them, that's self-defense. If they tell you to go fuck yourself you ignore them."

"Gotcha. As long as it's a government contractor thing and not a nobodies thing."

"It's a professionalism thing, I think retail or whatever is the same way, but off the clock I don't care if you get into a fistfight with everybody who looks at you sideways, we don't police that - the police do, and they might care, but I don't."

She shrugs and smiles shyly. "That's probably fine."

"Oh good. Never know what to expect when a new planet shows up on the scene but you're so much cheaper than an angel I'm glad we're working it out."

She's also glad about that. She pays attention at work. She goes to one of the envoy shops in Har and asks them to recommend culturally revelatory books or shows.

They get that a lot. There's some reasonably well-regarded children's media, and a few classics for adults that have been festooned with Har-relevant footnotes.
