Gale-force winds and frigid cold. A human body not dressed for this weather will die in less than an hour. The sun is high, the land is barren rock, and there are no signs of civilization.
What mechanism is making more people have dena Yeresbeth? (Also what do the component words of "dena Yeresbeth" mean?)
There's like divination magic for identifying catalysts?
Dena Yeresbeth, the disirad, and the old magic have all been returning to the world at the same time. It's unclear whether one of them caused the others, or whether they're all downstream of an unknown source.
Yeres is three in Old Sartoran, beth is unity, dena is a signifier that Sveneric doesn't quite grasp the meaning of—somewhere between "blessed" and "taken for granted".
A dyr can be used to identify potential catalysts, although it requires a lot of training to sort through the raw information of an entire planet's worth of mental signatures.
She gets why you'd want to find your future epic level heroes or whatever if that were a thing you could do but it's so SO sketchy.
"I promise you that if it weren't for my father's ability to identify catalysts and nudge history in the right direction, I wouldn't be standing here right now. Nobody would. Norsunder would have won, and you'd have arrived on a broken, lifeless world."
"Yes, like I said, I can see why you would want to violate people in order to continue to have people around so that, among other things, you could repeat the process."
Sveneric takes a moment to collect himself, then says tightly, "Thank you for sharing the wisdom of your world with us. Whatever you decide to do next, I'd be happy to help if I can."
"I continue to believe that we'd benefit from more mental healers—if that's possible for you. I understand that you never actually got the training. And I don't think we're equipped to train you, either, unfortunately; there's too much difference between dena Yeresbeth and the subtle arts."
"I can self-teach and work conservatively with people who are willing to try me with the understanding that that's what I'm doing."
"Understood. If you let me know the types of cases you can work with, and when, I can find suitable patients and make sure they understand the situation."
"One thing I can do safely right now is put people to sleep - if they're not fighting me; I can knock people out if they're fighting but it'll give them a headache and it's less restful - and a thing to help them feel more alert. If those are in demand."
Sleeping definitely is. Alertness sounds useful, too, but sleep is likely to be in higher demand. Can she help someone tonight if Sveneric provides magical transit there and back?
Then they can certainly find a more efficient way to deploy it soon. For today, though, Sveneric arranges a meeting with another dyranarya, a young woman named Hlareas, whose patient has been dealing persistent nightmares. They meet her on the streets of Eidervaen, capital city of Sartor (the magical transfer is, once again, smooth and seamless). It's a stately city, much less beautified than Alsais, with lots of imposing stone buildings and a different statue every few blocks.
"So you're the world-hopping mind-mage!" Hlareas says in greeting. "Welcome to Sartor. And thank you in advance."
"Technically speaking subtle arts is not classified as magic at home but yes. Uh, there are protocols I should be able to learn for nightmares out of my textbooks, but I don't know them yet. What I can do now is just induce sleep. Nightmares will happen as much as they were likely to anyway."
"I think it will still be helpful. The fear of nightmares makes keeps him awake at night. But we'll make sure he knows."
"Should I prioritize figuring out how to treat nightmares over other stuff I could be studying?"
"Plausibly," Sveneric says. "It's a common enough problem. On the other hand, we can usually treat the sources of nightmares with a dyr; it takes a while, but it's doable. It might make sense to focus your efforts in the places we're most lacking. We're especially ill-equipped to serve people with a distorted view of reality—things like hallucinations or ungrounded beliefs. At least at our current level of understanding."
"Then I should go over the tables of contents of the books with you and figure out an ordering, later."
