"I guess I'd ...shoot at it from a distance?"

"Would that work?"

"Well, probably not. I just don't think it'd be a good idea, attacking the camp."

"When armies are fighting, flying wizards will fireball the enemy camp at night, from so high in the sky that you have very little hope of seeing them from the ground."

"That's awful. I don't think the demons that can Fireball are the same as the demons that can fly, thankfully."

"We are fortunate that demons are much worse than armies at acting strategically. But we shouldn't assume they'll never do it. What could the camp do, if we suspected that demons might try that?"

"We could camp underground?"

"There are not many cave systems that are themselves secure from monsters and large enough to host the army."

"I know that, Chief. I just don't know what you do, aboveground, if there are flying Fireball demons. It doesn't really seem like you can solve that."

"One thing you can do is make it hard for them to aim. For this reason all the fires are covered; from a distance where it is hard to see a demon or other attacker, it will also be hard for them to aim very precisely. Another thing you can do is make the tents from material that does not easily burn, or have the priests soak them before the sun sets."

"Some animal skins don't easily burn at all. You can put them straight on the fire and they'll just smoke."

"Now you're thinking!"

"They stink pretty bad, but I guess folks would rather their beds stink than burn."

"Certainly once they have seen their fellows' bed burn they will tend to change their opinion in that direction."

"I want a painting of the men who felled that glabrezu. Or - how much are you following the artistic styles in the Inner Sea, how sentimental is currently fashionable -"

"I've never heard anyone in Andoran condemn a piece of artwork as too sentimental. Sentiment is a good thing!"

"Well in that case probably we want a weeping very beautiful lover saying goodbye to her boyfriend, who is equipped with nothing but a spear and some leather armor that barely fits him, while his mother frets in the background, and one of him slaying the Glabrezu - but do get all the men who were involved into the portrait, it's unjust otherwise - and then a third of him returning to the very beautiful lover, in plate armor and with a magical spear, and call it 'we fight that we may build' or something."

" - that's beautiful. Only I don't usually draw people I haven't met."

"Well, time to pick up a new technique. You can do sketches and ask the man if it's right and keep doing that until he says it's perfect. As a bonus this will make the girl more beautiful, because love does that to people."

"I didn't know you had an interest in art."

"It is substantially a mercenary interest. Daeran will take the artwork to Absalom with him when he goes, and auction it for the support of the Crusade. If we know what the people like then they will be more eager to buy your work and speak of our cause. But - to be more generous to my own motives - the reason that art is effective for this purpose is that it moves people. The war is very distant for them, and art can bring it closer."

"I've always thought that if people saw the beauty of art there wouldn't be wars, and we wouldn't need crusading and killing and all this awfulness."

"Well, we'd need the demons to see the beauty of art, for that to work."

"I suppose it's a silly idea."

"We are, at present, without means to achieve it. Goals can't be silly; if you want to go travel the stars someday there is nothing gained by saying that you should want, instead, to possess two rocks, since you can do that right now and you can't travel the stars without becoming the most powerful cleric in the world. Now, pretending that a goal will be achieved just because that would be nice, that's silly, and usually fatal sooner or later. Refusing to do anything about your problems because you wish you didn't have them, that's silly. But you can dream of whatever you want."
