"Sure - I mean, not the originals, but -" He pulls up shots of his latest on his phone. There's lots of swirly stuff that could be adapted into fabric patterns, but he's apparently also dabbled in fantasy illustration with fictitious planets and dragons and stuff.

Nora thinks both styles are interesting! "I like this one," she points out a particular swirl, "it looks like it could go great tessellated with the red one from earlier, and they'd make a neat sort of purple if you made the individual ones really small..."

"Huh, I'll write that down." He has a notes app for this kind of thing.

Nora wants to know if the planets and creatures from any particular work of fiction.

"Nah, I made them up. I'd work to spec if anybody wanted me to do their concept art or something though."

"Neat! They're cool and you should be proud of them."

Does Xander want to compare notes on micro-fashion?

Sure thing. Has she considered doing anything with excessively fine chainmail patterns?

A little bit! Maybe he can share some ideas on bracelet and necklace designs? She can do blowup images via conjured scroll.

So here are some patterns that you can make by hand with chainmail links, and here is one he's drawn up that he thinks might be impossible to make that way but a magical girl could do it -

Ooo she hasn't seen that one before, she can try it in starscape and make a 3D model to play with...

Isabella is excellent and so is her twin.

They really are aren't they.

There's about an hour of mingling to be had before the Important People Speeches. (It's the smaller Pax Corps party rather than the big public one, so there aren't many Important People Speeches, but there will be some.)

What're the speeches about? Or are they the kind that aren't about things.

Thank you all for coming today! The logistics chain that will allow this facility to function is a triumph of cooperation and human ingenuity, made possible by the earnest efforts of many in this room.

Here are some statistics about the facility! These numbers are very high because they have to move a lot of patients in and out and handle their needs upon revival. The numbers for the Gentle Repose facility just offsite are even higher.

These are some of the names of long-dead individuals whose good work earned them a subsidized early resurrection! They are scheduled to be revived during the first day of the Chicago facility's operation. (The public party gave a slightly different shortlist, with more emphasis on American citizens who were selected this way.)

Towards the end of the (actually fairly short) formal proceedings, a number of Very Important People also make an appearance. They mostly don't give any Important People Speeches, because they already gave their Important People Speeches at the large public party and they're here to relax. They do get a round of recognition, though.

Special thanks to the following Pax Corps members and affiliates; here's how they went above and beyond to make sure this facility opened on time with its planned logistical redundancies. (There's a lot of logistics redundancy so they can eke out as many resurrections as possible from every hour of resurrection-item time.)

Concluding the talks is...

He's in human form for this event, partly because it's less intimidating and partly because it's simply more convenient when using human-sized doors.

He's possibly the only one present who can seriously compete with the magical girls for style points. He's wearing a pristine white vest over a pale blue shirt, exquisitely tailored leather pants, a cloak of tiny iridescent silver scales, and a belt of same. At his neck is an amulet of sapphire flawlessly inlaid with a pair of diamond wings; on his head is a bone circlet studded with countless tiny cabochon sapphires that glimmer like stars. On his wrists are a pair of long thin bracelets of glacial ice, or possibly some mineral whose blue-white whorls are nearly indistinguishable from it.

(They are, of course, his scales, his bones, and even leather from his own wings, in some cases significantly shrunken and condensed, because it's easier to work with soulthreads that are attached to their original substrate. Gems are the next best thing, being generally receptive to magic, and also they're very pretty. Most of these items have yet to reach their full potential, but they are all of them very magic.)

"Today, we recognize the heights that can be reached when we join our efforts in shared pursuit of a precious dream. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with all of you, and deeply proud of what we've proven able to accomplish together. Tomorrow, I shall be eager to see the bright and wondrous new endeavors to which you turn your hearts and minds. But for tonight, we rest well, laugh loud, and celebrate a job well done."

He raises a glass.

"To life!"

"TO LIFE!"

She knew he was supposed to be hot but she has not actually spent that much time staring at photos of him so it's still something of a surprise.

Snicker.

And then it's time to PARTY. The music is very music, the dance is very dance, and the smaller-but-still-large room adjoining the main one with snacks and tables and easily-movable chairs is surprisingly well-insulated.

Dancing!!

Not doing that so as to not break her fucking neck! She has a stuffed mushroom. Yum.
