Shortly thereafter, the team finishes the next assembly and Nora is pulled away to do quality control on a different set of parts.

The team speeds through a few more small assemblies, making excellent time, before wrapping up for the day.

Does she get to make any progress in her book?

Some of the smaller assemblies require a new stopping every few minutes, but there's time to get through a few chapters.

Then it is an acceptable way to pass the time.

The next morning's tests take place in a different part of the facility and involve a bunch of precision measurement equipment, including a fancy laser setup. They want to do more vibration-free measurements!

She is at their service.

Monica shows the interns how to calibrate the machines! They can run some of the tests themselves, albeit with supervision.

(The program isn't solely for testing powers, it's also designed to give a taste of what working in each field is like. After the first day, they're making a concerted effort to treat the interns like actual new hires rather than portable magic-outputting machines, and give them tasks suitable for new hires. The learning curve means they won't really be getting work done faster than the experts working alone, modulo efficiencies from magic, but that's not really the point.)

She's pretty sure already she does not find this field interesting but she will play along instead of reading her book like a petulant child.

And soon it will be lunchtime!

"Cafeteria again, or want to explore?" asks Nora.

"I'm down to explore today."

In that case, flying! It's Colorado; the view is spectacular.

It is, though her acclimation to the altitude is not quite as spectacular and she needs to catch her breath for a minute once they've landed.

Nora's not much better off. After a bit of recovery time, she points out a restaurant. "Thai?"

"I could go for a coconut curry!"

"Good place to get it!" Nora sets off for the place in question at a sedate walking pace. "How are you liking the internship so far?"

"Honestly it's a little dull. I know my power doesn't lend itself to tremendous intellectual stimulation but I just have no other interest in the field so far."

"Aw, that's a shame. I guess that's part of why we're here for two weeks instead of two months, though, to try different things."

"Yeah, maybe the next thing will be more fun. Do you know where they're going to send you?"

After a brief pause while they enter and are seated, Nora replies, "I'm doing a stint with a cartography firm next! It's not exactly a comparative advantage for me, I just really like maps and want to know more about how they're made."

"Do you know if it's true that they put mistakes in on purpose to catch plagiarists?"

"No idea! I hope not, I don't want to get icky wrongness all over my nice pretty maps. I can't wait to find out, though."

"How would you choose to discourage plagiarism instead?"

"Put tiny flowers in, like a watermark?"

"How would that discourage plagiarism?"
