"Mr. Lionheart is eager to start testing tomorrow. I, uh, can't say more than that."

"...Okay."

He suddenly wants to go to bed early.

The twins can go to bed early if they want. Lights out is at 9 P.M. and wakeup is at 6:30 in the morning, as usual.

Zeke rereads one of their mother's letters.

It says how she wishes the academy would let her see them some time, then she rambles about some of the children in her neighborhood and how she wishes they could be friends.

Parts of it are blacked out. The names of places and people, mostly.

He was never quite sure why they blacked out those parts.

The letters have no comment on that.

He puts the letter back and goes to sleep.

In the morning Ezekial's breakfast is the bland health-food stuff. Tabby's is normal. "Sorry, Zeke. We have to have a baseline for what your nutrition is like. The scientific method is important."

He nods blanky and eats.

Tabby tries to sneak him some of her breakfast.

Dr. Abraham turns away from the cleaners who've come in to work on the habitat and confiscates it. "Ah-ah. Please cooperate. It's for the best."

(Zeke gets a little snuck past anyway.)

He flashes Tabby a very forced smile.

And then it's time for Zeke's testing. Dr. Abraham promises they can have lunch together - a proper lunch, maybe with donuts - provided Zeke doesn't act up during the tests.

He perks up a little. "Okay."

And then Zeke is shown to the testing rooms...

...Mr. Lionheart is in there. He stares at Zeke with those grey eyes. "You're growing up nicely. Good. Promising. It's about time to delve into you and your sister's more hidden magical properties... If we want to make the process easier for future people, lots of study is needed, you understand?"

"Good. What your power seems to be is an isomorph of the mage sight we already know a fair bit about - you have mage hearing, you hear magic. We're going to map common patterns and stimuli and build you a library, possibly calibrate it to mage-sight, and then some physical experiments."

The tests are long and boring and very difficult. Mr. Lionheart gets impatient fast. He doesn't hit Zeke or anything... But he does look rather angry. He raises his voice a few times.

Eventually, "Enough of this. Mendez and Evans, you two do the physical exams, I have other matters to attend."

"It would be unreasonable to expect you to memorize an entire corpus in a day. But be sure to continue working hard. Good day."

The physical exams aren't hard to think about, at least. They draw a little blood, put him inside a big scanning thing, that sort of thing.

He actually finds the scanning thing relaxing. Interestingly, the earplugs don't stop the magic music.

Tomorrow you're going to have to wear a bunch of wires and sticky pads on your head all day while you do the same thing. They are for studying thought patterns. This was just an introduction, but it was a good one with a lot of progress!

"Can me and Dr. Abraham still have lunch?"
