Jenwy had been running over in her head her lines for the school play, hoping that she'd dream something about the world of the play rather than another frustrating dream about school. She didn't get that, but instead she got fairies appearing in Dad's art gallery. As she blinked awake the next morning, she decided that'd been almost as good. And her alarm hadn't gone off yet, so there was still time to find something to do before school, which was also good.
"Not before class tomorrow no! But 3D printers and things mean it'd only be a few days. You could wear your gym clothes all day, no skirt on that."
"A fursuit is..." Neil stops talking when Jenwy brings up her phone. There are photos of people in brightly colorful outfits with heads of what look a little like cartoon animals, and thick suits made with fur-like fabric. They seem really bright and happy!
"Well, it can take a while and be awkward to put on and off. It gets hot and the head gets a bit stuffy, and you don't get quite your full range of motion. Or at least that's what I've heard; maybe that's just what I'm meant to think? I know that there's historic fursuits where they don't use modern tech, but maybe the modern tech just works like magic and just make it look like they'd be unwieldy?"
"Well... I'm not used to my gym clothes either... At least the Very Short Skirt is, er, a skirt?
"You haven't worn a fursuit yourself?"
"That's right, I haven't. It... seems like too much effort? I don't care enough what I look like. And I have to wear this as part of me getting the job I want."
"I - there're other reasons I couldn't ever be a judge or a History-Monk or a Physics-Monk or a presbyter, but that's one of them. The uniforms!"
"I've always wanted to protect my family from bad guys! Wearing clothes like this is not at all a problem if it lets me do that."
"Back to being on topic: Jenwy, our Jenwy, would be happy to wear a fursuit in the place of her showy skirt. Or just gym clothes all day, either lets you blend in. But it's more important to wear something that leaves you psychologically comfortable, otherwise everyone would look at you askance."
She's being patronized.
She's never liked being patronized.
But - if everyone can tell she's not comfortable, and if everyone really does agree - then they're not wrong, and - "Is it just you, or would anyone else think it's less surprising for Other Me to suddenly change her clothes style than start looking uncomfortable -"
(She may have sounded snappy.)
"Everyone would think it's much less weird to change your clothing style than starting to look uncomfortable in the clothes you normally wear! Like, sometimes people have periods where they feel shyer or want to try something new. But making yourself wear something you're uncomfortable in hoping to fit in makes you look ridiculous compared to everyone else!"
She throws up her hands. "Is this how people feel when they suddenly join a utopia without doing any research?"
She shakes her head. "But - okay, I'll go order the fursuit. I can do it on my phone, right? I don't know the tailorias here; got any recommendations?"
"Well... we might just have one fursuit maker here, I haven't looked that up. When it comes to tailors, there's a gym clothing tailor I know is great and a bunch of women's tailors who can get you any kind of skirt you'd want, I'm sure they're all fine. I can like. Note who they are? Use voice notes on your phone."
Oh nice. (She can ponder which course she wants to take later.)
"Thanks!"
Tap to turn the voice notes on... yeah, that works much the same as in Ev, conveniently. (Or are those icons up top wild new features? Like she really would expect from a face-telling computer?)
Jenwy ends up with a list of tailors and their addresses for when she goes buying new clothes!
