It's well past the worst depths of winter, even here on the north edge of the Worldwound- the temperature ekes its way above freezing occasionally, the days are only short and not miserably short, last night's snowstorm wasn't quite a blizzard. It is, nonetheless, fairly surprising when the patrol on their way to Fort #11 spots three figures in the distance trudging towards them from the north.
There are some wider stretches. They used to be all about the same distance, but sometimes forts fall and everything's got to be rejiggered. There's not-full-forts that don't have their own wardstones, in particularly long stretches, where you can stop for a bowl of stew, but mostly you want to make good time and get good use out of your Endures.
(Oooh right the wardstones she wants to look at a wardstone they definitely will not let random strangers in to stare at the wardstones and it would be suspicious to ask. She casts Cleric Detect Magic and watches the barrier for a bit instead. )
Do horse patrols swap horses at the forts in between, or does each fort hang onto its own?
Usually you want to swap horses but the more anal of the fort logistics people (including Artigas) will arrange to keep track of who is responsible for which ones and which should accordingly make it back "home".
At the fort they have to stand around waiting to be Detect Fiendish Presenced and then they can come in.
Nothing Fiendish here! She'll make an effort to look a bit more alive and together for whoever's here to greet them.
Well, 'a bit more' is relative, and doesn't quite reach the bar of 'full Taldane sentences without having to think about them first', but she doesn't actually need to carry on a conversation before channeling. Assuming somebody can point her to where she's supposed to go and the soldiers can crowd in without needing to be organized at, but that seems like a safe assumption.
Clear her mind, and reach, and make of herself a conduit for the Divine.....
And once she's been in her own channel and gotten some stew inside her, she can talk at close to normal speed again. "I've two more today; will later this evening suffice to reach the night shift?"
"Next in an hour or two and the last just before I sleep, then?" She is definitely going to be responsible and allow extra time in case getting to sleep takes longer without her party around, so that'll put it a couple of hours before midnight.
Fuuuuuuuuck she did not think she was signing up for that much walking this is going to suck and also be super embarrassing. She might as well just go to Kenabres anyway at that rate.
"That seems a bit impractical? What do you do when someone drops in between two forts?"
"Oh." Of course it wasn't literal she's an idiot, they don't have that many wizards here. "I could do another if there's need, but we started late enough I'd be risking tomorrow's spells."
Nod. Om nom stew.
...speaking of spells, are the fort wizards around? Is she needed urgently for anything else?
Not all that well, there's been a lot of more interesting things to learn, but she's pretty sure women around here are going to be wizards or cooks, can she spot any women in uniform?
Then she'll tentatively head thataway.
"Good evening. Might you be among the fortress wizards?"
"My name is Khalida, originally of Sothis. We've just arrived from the direction of Fort #11."
Yeah, well, she thought 'the one that just channeled' was obvious, and given that wasn't sure what specifically you wanted to know, she doesn't say.
"I seek those who wish to trade spells. If you are not among them, I shall apologize for taking your time, and ask if you may direct me one that is."
She'll try asking one more person, but if she gets a similar reception awkwardness will win out over stubbornness and she'll resort to Visibly Studying Spell Notes at the end of her squad's table.
