It's well past the worst depths of winter, even here on the north edge of the Worldwound- the temperature ekes its way above freezing occasionally, the days are only short and not miserably short, last night's snowstorm wasn't quite a blizzard. It is, nonetheless, fairly surprising when the patrol on their way to Fort #11 spots three figures in the distance trudging towards them from the north.
"Yes, Make Whole is second circle, but I don't know if Nethys might have some intermeidate spell available as a domain spell."
"That's... huh. I never learned the arcane version, but I know not- do not know how to tell if- what I asked for is... that which I received."
Indeed, Create Water. "Post here is slow and unreliable, but you can mail order a copy of the Book of Magic from Kenabres if you wish - it might not be faster than arriving under your own power and getting it at a bookshop, though, if you do choose to go according to your original schedule."
"I have a copy, as it happens." Really she ought to have left it with the camel when they were triaging their packs, but she hadn't thought of it (stuffed in the bottom of the satchel under her spellbook and scratch paper) until they'd already set out, and then Tariq would've bitched about it.
"...I must say I have not read its entirety." Her old teacher had mostly used it for hedge-divination.
"I don't know how - helpful, it is, or if it's not meant to stand alone without a supportive clerical tradition around you. I assume it is not like the Acts of Iomedae, which is mostly epic poetry about her mortal adventures."
"No, it's far from adventure.... what is the verb, to start a new game of cards?" She mimes shuffling. "Not to give out the cards, before that?"
"It's as though someone took apart half a dozen wizards' private notebooks and shuffled the leaves together, and then someone else tried to rewrite them to be readable by a novice, but years after he had been himself a novice, and then yet a third wizard tried to put it back in order to use as a textbook, all unknowing that it had originally been multiple documents. It's very useful for understanding subtle points of theory. Rather less so for... um, those sorts of things one goes to a clerical tradition for."
Nod. "So long as one isn't expecting it to be other than what it is- and knows how to look things up, it's a great help, but it's not especially a source of, um, guidance."
"And on what might you need guidance? - it's a very good orison, by the by. Guidance. Create Water."
Something about the motion looks uncannily familiar- not like she's seen it, like she's done it, but she definitely hasn't- "...oh! Detect Magic. Would you do that again, if you please?"
"That's it! That's the other one I was granted- I didn't recognize it- well, none of them really- what does it do?"
"It makes you slightly better at the next thing you try, if you expend it. It only lasts a minute but I have never encountered a reason not to simply cast it a hundred times a day."
"Oh, is that why it- it has- I don't know the Taldane-" she gestures futilely in the air in front of her, trying to recall something only half-seen and that only half-remembered, like a dream of a dream even though she was wide awake- "-if it's any thing-"
She finds it waiting in her mind and prompts it to her fingertips and- "Guidance-"
-and promptly loses Detect Magic and bursts out in frustrated Osiriani presumably-swearing.
"No- I truly ought have anticipated that, it was foolish of me- I, um, I couldn't see it. Because I was casting it."
"Ah. Well. I cast it about a hundred times a day and you can certainly watch me at it. Create Water."
"I would most sincerely appreciate that." Right, she's supposed to be helping fill this cistern and prove she can actually be responsible if she remembers to and not just stare at magic all day. "Create Water."
If she's not going to say anything else he will return his attention to Lt. Conill with the night shift report.
Create Water. Create Water. Detect Magic and stare at Blai for a bit. Create Water.
The cistern only fills about twenty percent faster with the extra person working on it, but she gets better at aiming with more practice.
