Winterbliss is recruited by F.I.X.F.I.C.

It's been a long day for this one, and she's taking a rest, reading Empty Spaces twitter and daydreaming of service of another fashion.

She has another name on her wallet, but online she's Winterbliss, the moderator of a major trans subreddit, handler of crises, finder of housing, solicitor of donations, fixer of problems. She's lucky in a way; her family's always backed her to the hilt, though she still wishes she had more resources, more time, more power to help -

Still, she does her best, and works to build things one day at a time. She paces herself. She'll be okay.

For now, though, she's unoccupied.

This does not go unnoticed by engines of cognition far beyond the world - they choose their times and places well, and let loose a flight of messengers to all corners of the world; in this case, in the form of an eagle of glittering glass carrying a letter with a wax seal tapping its beak against her window.

That is not a thing that should be possible.

She cracks open the window, and cautiously allows the eagle in.

It is not much more graceful on foot than a mundane eagle, but it is far more considerate, stepping in and making a best effort not to knock anything over or scratch the pain with its razor-sharp claws of impossible glass.

It will unpick the tie holding a letter to its leg, and offer it in its beak.

Winterbliss cautiously curtseys to the eagle, as best as she can manage in her somewhat gangly and awkward body, and takes the letter firmly in both hands.

Whatever agency sent this creature to her, it is higher than any she knows to exist. She should at least hear it out.

The letter reads as follows:

Dear Miss Winterbliss,

I hope this letter finds you well. We at the F.I.X.F.I.C. Agency have a job opportunity for you that we believe that you may be interested in. Contrary to what you might have expected, the multiverse is both quite real and quite accessible, with the right technology or 'magic'. Naturally, this both means that there are all the more problems to solve, and all the more options for how to solve them.

The F.I.X.F.I.C. Agency are but one amongst many groups that has access to multiversal travel and the fruits thereof. Our mission is to ensure the thriving of sapient life, with an especial focus on inserting our empowered agents into worlds undergoing great peril to 'fix' the arc of their world into something brighter and better. You in particular have been identified as likely to be especially compatible with both our empowerment methodologies and our mission.

The job is far from an easy one, but we have millennia of experience shepherding and supporting would-be heroes, and a broad selection of benefits available for those willing to undertake the task.

If you wish to speak with us in more detail about joining us, please tear the enclosed talisman, which will transport you to one of our bases, where you will be fully briefed and offered a selection of abilities and missions to undertake. Unfortunately, due to security considerations, a further explanation of those details cannot be included here, but rest assured that even if you decline, the worst that could happen would simply that you return to your life as it was before.

If you wish to decline, simply discard or destroy the letter, and we shall trouble you no more.

Agent Murray

Of course, just because it says it does not mean it is true. But it is some small evidence.

Tearing the token is foolish, but is this not what she truly desires, in her heart of hearts? To be useful? To save others from a cruel fate?

It is a cunning trap, but she cannot deny that this is likely the most important thing to ever happen in her life.

She tears the token. She barely even needs to think about it.

And then she is elsewhere, without so much as a transition. A small and high-ceilinged antechamber, bedecked in white marble with inlay in a golden metal, with furniture and tastefully minimal art on the walls and lit by skylights from above; a man in a rumpled suit is sitting at a desk fiddling with his computer, and takes a moment to notice her arrival.

"Ah, you must be my new candidate. Welcome! I'm Nicholas Murray, the agent assigned to your induction process. Pleased to meet you."

She folds her arms neatly across her chest and nods to the man. "I'm Winterbliss. To be honest, I hadn't expected the token to work; but it was an easy test."

She comes and stands across from him. "Well. What would you have of me?"

"Right to business. The multiverse exists. We need people to save it, and you were determined to be a good candidate. We will empower you and provide what other support we can, and send you to a universe in dire need of fixing. You will do your best to save it. If you succeed, you get paid. If you fail, we bail you out and maybe give you another go depending on why you failed."

He will get out a tablet computer and pass it to you.

"Here, this should describe the worlds we currently have in need of agents assigned to them. I recommend you choose something on the easier side; you're new to the business, and while we have more worlds in crisis than we have agents or resources with which to empower them, but you're not alone."

Winterbliss scrolls through the list of candidates, and nods throughtfully to herself. "Nightmare Canyon seems the most amenable world to an individual intervener. I'll have to take some time selecting my empowerments, however..."

She taps her fingers together. "I'm restricted to bodies that are common in the mission world? That seems rather a pity."

"Nightmare Canyon seems highly amenable for a first world to save indeed."

"Unfortunately, it turns out biology is one of those things which is extremely inefficient to port from universe to universe. Even humans work in radically different ways on different worlds. Cheaper to get the same benefits another way if there isn't a local template. Nightmare Canyon is one of those worlds with dozens of sentient species - there's stuff dreamed up from all sorts of mythology - so you do have a bit of flexibility to work with."
