teenage mage-gifted jisa ends up in cosel
Permalink

Jisa, thirteen years old and newly mage-gifted which is the best thing in the entire world, is experimenting with Gates!

She's doing it secretly, of course, because no one is supposed to know she's a mage. Also because Vanyel would probably yell at her for what she wants to try.

If she asks her Companion about it then Enara is going to yell at her, so she doesn't.

She's trying to route a Gate through several of the other planes she's been studying lately, mostly because the idea occurred to her and then she had to see if it would work, and also because theoretically it should let her Gate a lot further from reserves, because she can cut the 'distance' she's searching over. Maybe.

She doesn't really know what's going to happen, but that's the best part, really. She does it the way she's been practicing, a 'blind' Gate, just aiming in a direction and then building a threshold on nothing at all, which she was pretty sure ought to be possible because why on earth would magic care about doorframes, that has to be a limitation in the mage's mind and not the magic itself, and it took a lot of practice to get it down but she turned out to be right.

It takes her half a dozen tries, losing her sense of 'direction' as she pokes the spell through the Elemental Planes of Water and of Earth and Air (the plane of Fire is very overwhelming and she's avoiding it for now.)

Eventually, though, she gets through, and a Gate comes up. Weirdly, she can't see across it, it's milky-opaque instead of clear.

...Crossing a Gate to an unknown place is a pretty risky plan. But she can't not do it now. She's way too curious.

:Enara I'm trying this experiment–: she sends, pushing across all the information very fast so that her Companion won't have time to stop her, and then she steps across.

"Maybe it'd help to just think out loud to you while you're cooking anyway? And then one of us might notice if there's something I missed."

"Fire away." The fish sizzles.

Jisa spends the rest of the time while the fish is cooking talking through her approach to trying the Gate back tomorrow, and does notice a part where she's not sure how something will work exactly, and adds some notes that she should remember to try it other ways if her best guess fails.

Maurabel is fairly interested in the subject, actually, though less than she would be if she could actually do any of it. She presents Jisa half a fish in yogurt onion sauce. Lightning gets the fish's eyes and some skin.

Jisa compliments the fish and keeps chattering through the rest of her plan, switching to Mindspeech when her mouth is full, since Maurabel doesn't seem bored and it's very helpful. By the end of dinner she's feeling a lot more sure that she can get this to work, although still not as sure as she would like.

And in the morning Maurabel puts Lightning back and they can set out to the nearest unattended wilderness.

Jisa is mostly quiet while they walk. She was feeling so optimistic yesterday but now she's VERY NERVOUS.

"If this doesn't work I have another idea but it's very speculative."

"Um, all right, good to know," Jisa says, a bit vaguely. "Are we far enough?"

"Yeah. Nobody around."

Jisa closes her eyes for a long moment, to centre and ground and clear her head, and then she opens them and builds a doorway neatly between two trees.

She concentrates hard, and lets the spell start searching. Not for the familiar Heralds' Temple, yet, but through the Elemental Plane of Water first, which is within reach...

Minutes pass in silence.

Maurabel watches, but mostly takes notes on all the nothing she isn't seeing.

Honestly Jisa's biggest problem right now is that the spell is exhausting. It's taking her a long time to do each step, she does in fact have to trial-and-error toward the right 'direction' at two different points, and the whole time the Gate is draining from her.

She is, however, in a stubborn mood.

She reaches Air, the one she couldn't even do summonings from, and that means she's close and she stretches out and out -

- and the spell connects, finds the doorway of the Heralds' Temple, the other end snaps up and she sags to the ground, nearly losing consciousness, but at least manages to sag forward so she can sort of half-fall through on hands and knees.

:JISA! Jisa Chosen ohgods stay put just hold it I'm coming I'm coming I'll be right there –:

She can hold it but really not for very much longer! Also she can't feel Treven; he's less far, she can tell that, but still far, she can't reach him with Mindspeech, not that she has the strength left to try very hard.

"Jisa are you okay -"

"I - just -" Jisa is not really in great shape to answer right now.

And then a very large white horse with uncannily large and almost humanlike blue eyes gallops up to the Gate and nearly bowls Jisa right over. She plants all four hooves in the grass and skids to a halt half a yard away.

:I've told Rolan -:

:Please come across, can't hold it, I need...:

:What:

That is way too much to explain.

The white mare's flank heaves in a very humanlike sigh. She steps delicately across, nudging Jisa back onto Maurabel's side of the Gate.

Jisa takes the Gate down and then flops in a heap.

And now there's a large white horse giving Maurabel a piercing stare.

:I'm sorry, talking to you isn't usually the done thing, but - what?:

:Do not read my mind:
