teenage mage-gifted jisa ends up in cosel
Permalink

Jisa, thirteen years old and newly mage-gifted which is the best thing in the entire world, is experimenting with Gates!

She's doing it secretly, of course, because no one is supposed to know she's a mage. Also because Vanyel would probably yell at her for what she wants to try.

If she asks her Companion about it then Enara is going to yell at her, so she doesn't.

She's trying to route a Gate through several of the other planes she's been studying lately, mostly because the idea occurred to her and then she had to see if it would work, and also because theoretically it should let her Gate a lot further from reserves, because she can cut the 'distance' she's searching over. Maybe.

She doesn't really know what's going to happen, but that's the best part, really. She does it the way she's been practicing, a 'blind' Gate, just aiming in a direction and then building a threshold on nothing at all, which she was pretty sure ought to be possible because why on earth would magic care about doorframes, that has to be a limitation in the mage's mind and not the magic itself, and it took a lot of practice to get it down but she turned out to be right.

It takes her half a dozen tries, losing her sense of 'direction' as she pokes the spell through the Elemental Planes of Water and of Earth and Air (the plane of Fire is very overwhelming and she's avoiding it for now.)

Eventually, though, she gets through, and a Gate comes up. Weirdly, she can't see across it, it's milky-opaque instead of clear.

...Crossing a Gate to an unknown place is a pretty risky plan. But she can't not do it now. She's way too curious.

:Enara I'm trying this experiment–: she sends, pushing across all the information very fast so that her Companion won't have time to stop her, and then she steps across.

:All right. Is anyone going to be home now? I want to have a peek at the house and see if I can feasibly get you out of it without waking anyone:

:I don't know specifically but the house is almost never empty:

:Who else lives there?:

His wife, their younger kids, his brother, his wife, their kids:

:Hmm. Where does your owner usually leave you to sleep at night, and where do they put the amulet?:

:He leaves me at the front door and I get a reward if I catch anyone trying to rob the place, but me being there scares off everybody who's ever looked like they were thinking about it:

:All right, so it won't be hard for you to sneak off without them noticing, if I free you. Can you describe the room in the house where your owner sleeps - where, and what it looks like -?:

:It's the biggest one. The front door leads to the kitchen and past that is where he and his wife sleep, with the kids next to that, and the brother and his family sleep in the room to the right of the kitchen:

:Does your owner wear the amulet around their neck even at night or do they take it off?:

:He wears it all the time, I think:

:All right. I'm going to go try to scope out the house and see if it's shielded against my magic or anything, and then I'll let you know what my plan is:

:Your magic isn't one of the kinds every mage sets up wards against?:

:I'm not sure? But I'm pretty sure I have a different kind of magic from what mages here do:

:Okay:

Jisa knows where the house is and starts trudging in that direction, illusioning herself invisible once she gets within a block or two.

The Wood is still out working with his owner, but the owner's family is in and out of the house, bustling around doing various chores.

She hides out of sight of them.

Can she scry inside the house?

She cannot. (She can, however, look in the windows. They don't have curtains.)

She can hopefully get pretty close, since she's invisible right now, and locate the bedroom that Wood described as belonging to his owner.

Yup, there it is. A two year old is taking a nap in the big bed right now.

Hmm. Can she do other kinds of magic - oh, first, does her mage-sight work through the window and the presumed shields that block scrying...?

Mage-sight works!

Jisa tries a teeeeeny mage-light in a corner where it won't be visible to the toddler.

The toddler is fast asleep. The light works!

All right, she can probably do this? She knows the layout of the room now, it'll be dark when she's actually trying it but she just needs mage-sight to locate the amulet. She'll try breaking the necklace first and - hmm, she can't Fetch it out but she can do a tiny Gate and drop it through, rather than trying to float it all the way to the door or something. If she still can't steal it intact even when the owner is asleep, she'll break it and hope it's more unobtrusive when the elemental is far away and also has a temporary set-command not to harm their owner.

She should explain the plan to Wood. Is Wood still within her Mindspeech range?
