She should get the Clatter Rats to have a look at that most-of-an-engine. The consulting fee ought to be within her budget, and they seem like the kind of people who might have spare parts to hand.

And she can always cast Make Whole on the thing so long as it's "had work done."

She heads down to the Clatter Rats' warehouse and looks for them to show.

The place seems less busy. Once again, it doesn't look very interesting from the ground level. Only one rattus faber emerges to gruffly ask "This's private property. Whaddaya want? Wait- What's your name?"

"Thorn, looking for the Clatter Rats for a job. One of yours talked to me earlier." She describes the watch-rat, and digs through her perfect archive for the name she half-recalls getting.

"Well, you found us. Our availability might be a little low for the immediate future, is the thing. What's the job?"

"I'd like you to have a look at a locomotive engine and tell me if it's repairable, and if so, at what cost."

"Five sovs for an estimate," he says near-instantly. "Or free if you'll go do a little... Shopping for us. Entirely legitimate shopping. We're pretty small and kind of disliked, you know."

"I'm willing to help out with your shopping. What do you need?"

Medical supplies like gauze and bandages and stitching material, and antibiotics and painkillers, apparently. Also some bleach and copper wire. They'll pay her back if she doesn't get terribly ripped off.

She goes and purchases the rats' order for them. It shouldn't take too long to find suppliers for all this.

The first drugstore has everything but the copper wire and the proprietor looks at her funny. But does sell to her.

She accepts the weird look, and her goods. She stuffs them in her pack.

A hardware store, now, for copper wire. Surely they must have that?

Yep, plenty of copper wire among all the other tools and bits and bobs.

She'll pick up a roll of that as well, and then head back to the Clatter Rats.

The same rat as before is there. "You came through, eh. Stick all that on the elevator over there, and then I think old Geartooth is in good enough shape to inspect some things, if not good enough to start fixing 'em."

She puts the supplies where requested.

"Alright. Come with me and I'll show you the engine I need an opinion on."

Old Geartooth is a greying rat carrying a multitool who demands to be carried and grumbles about kids these days not understanding a hard rat's life.

He pronounced the engine fixable for as little as a hundred Sovereigns though it would be 'a little ratty', and he'd recommend a bigger budget for a more thorough refitting.

She thanks him for his service, and carries him back to the rats' warehouse. Then she goes back to the apartment and looks for Lenora.

She is flopped on the bed, staring at the ceiling.

"Murgh? Oh, hi!"

"Hey! I've found a locomotive with most of an engine - enough that it's repairable, and that's all Make Whole needs to work. I want to snap it up right away, but you're my partner so I figured I'd best get your sign-off."

"-I forgot you could do magic! If you can save money by doing magic, go for it. Well, maybe I should see this thing first, but probably!"

"Let's go have a look together! I'm close to making final purchasing decisions on the lot of it, so I'd really rather you had a say."

"Lunch first though! I was thinking eating at a cafe or something. Don't feel like cooking. And picking your musical for later!"

"Sounds like a plan to me!"

Lenora shows Thorn a hole-in-the-wall cafe that serves skillets, scrambled eggs with things in them, and waffles and various greasy things. She orders chips and a meat-laden skillet.

"So, I found two concerts and two musicals. We've got showings of Lancer of Blue-Green Skies, it's some kind of dramatic knights and castles story, or The Fall of Gold, which is about a rich guy and his friends trying to be better people, I think? And the concerts are a classical orchestra playing some Beethoven, or a Tackety band at a bar I know that plays 'jazz' that's a lot more, uh, casual?

She orders what Lenora's having. "You know, I've never had a skillet before. They weren't in style I guess."

"I like the sound of The Fall of Gold and the Tackety band. If you had to ask me to pick one, I'd go with the Tackety band. I've heard Beethoven before, he's around."
