"I'm erring on the side of caution, here. It would probably work. I don't know if it's certain: you would have to test it."

Nod. "What else can you tell me?"

"The underlying reason why many vampires aren't careful is a combination of terrible culture and progressive insanity. While we're technically immortal, I've never heard of a sane vampire that was more than two centuries old. I'm around seventy, and happy to report that I'm saner than the majority of my peers."

"Insane how?"

"There's a lot of variation, but delusions and obsessions are particularly common. My previous master vacillated between believing I was his daughter, his apprentice, his heir, his pet..."

"And ultimately this is hazardous to your health - directly or indirectly?"

"Yes."

"Ah. What are you going to do about it?"

"So far, be very careful about my feeding schedule and study medicine in hopes of better understanding the phenomena. Also, cultivate a general policy of caution and restraint."

"Medicine?"

"Healing the mind and body - and by extension, how the mind and body work in the first place. Understand in order to predict in order to control."

"Oh. Fairies just do that with magic."

"So do I. Now. I wasn't lucky enough to get it for free, as it were."

"How's your magic work? I would have thought sorcery doesn't work here and it seems like it does after all but I think yours isn't that..."

"Ritual practice and repetition. If you can do it mundanely, you can do it with magic, given enough time to build a ritual construct of that action. Having some ritual constructs already helps."

"How's this interact with the vampire stuff?"

"It probably does, but I've not tried to do it for obvious reasons. Though it is convenient to not need to sleep: it gives me more practice time."

"...obvious reasons are not obvious."

"If I wanted to gain vampire abilities through magic, I would need to ritually practice using those vampire abilities. Which are generally either passive effects or aggressively horrible."
