Were this an actual conversation, Meredith would tell Sanna that her world’s predators are very weak and shouldn’t even count as such.

Vampires have pretty cool senses but an internal velocimeter is not included. However, she does know how fast an average centaur is. “Centaur can run up to around 80 miles per hour, so, I should run faster than that if going in a straight line.”

And Sanna would reply that that's exactly why it's silly to expect her to share Meredith's view of 'perfectly normal amounts of dangerous'!

"Okay. I can handle that speed as long as you take at least a second to accelerate. Is that feasible?"

“With some practice, yes,” she replies, nodding. “It’s physically possible but is not something I’ve needed to do before.”

"Okay. So, could we instead try you just taking me entirely away from Íkos, instead of just running around until he calms down? Or would he still keep chasing even if you completely left the area? If it makes a difference, I can probably handle much higher speeds as long as you don't accelerate too fast, so we don't have to stick to 'only slightly faster than him' the entire time."

Of course, if they go that fast then the 'just running around' approach might work fine, but she'd rather not endure race car speeds for 15-plus minutes if she can avoid it. Especially given that she won't have a five-point harness, or any appreciable cushioning or shielding.

"Also… if we were to meet him, where would we even be meeting? I sort of imagined meeting him at his house, but I'm now realizing that it's kind of assuming a lot to imagine he lives in a house." The cold is turning her brain to mush

“It would be kind of a big area to leave but I haven’t tried it before, so I don’t really know how he’d act about it. And we’d be meeting him where he lives but no, he doesn’t live in a house. Most centaurs still live both in nature and in Greece because they’re even more stuck in their ways than witches. They’re also the reason Greek national parks and nature reserves have very little tourism.”

(In addition to Meredith’s Earth having more and bigger uninhabited —by humans— areas than Sanna’s, in general.)

"…Does Íkos live in Greece?"

“Yes, of course he does. …is that a problem?” There’s plenty of ways to get to Greece and some of them are even human-typical, surely Sanna doesn’t dislike them all.

"Kind of buried the lede on that, don't you think?"

Well, see, if she cares about not having to travel for it, she could talk with Meredith instead. Or even Luelle or Lythren.

“…more like different expectations? Nonhumans, especially of different species, don’t like living close to one another and most of them wouldn’t be interested in answering your questions. Half of the nearby ones are vampires and one of the non-vampires is a dragon. And I’ve never met a vampire whose focus is ‘making pleasant conversation’.” Even though she’s met many vampires.

What does literally any of that have to do with anything. "That's not… My point is that needing to travel overseas in order to do something is the sort of thing you mention upfront."

Overseas travel is not, from Meredith’s point of view, particularly relevant. It’s not like she’s in much of a hurry about anything except satisfying her curiosity and, depending on the travel method, that allows for conversations with the fae or oceanic species (much more interesting than just taking a plane, in her opinion).

How was she supposed to know???

And, because she doesn’t actually know how (or whether) to say this, Sanna will only get a slightly confused look in reply.

This is objectively not at all important, but Sanna is feeling very irritable, and Meredith looking this baffled about something this simple really rubs her the wrong way. "Do you seriously not…"

…Okay, no, this seriously isn't important.

(The pattern it points to is important, but she's not about to bring that up right now.)

"Never mind, maybe I'll ask about that later. Does Íkos even speak English?" For all Sanna knows, Meredith might not see why that's an important consideration either.

(The pattern is pretty much a neon sign at this point.)

What does that- oh- oh, right. “You don’t speak Ancient Greek,” she states flatly. This actually should have been obvious to her —unlike with the travel distance, she does see the problem here— but she didn’t actually think of it. (Look, the discovery of a new species and possibly a whole world is distracting in general and more so for her in specific.)

Sanna wants to laugh. Not just because it's funny that Meredith apparently had a huge brain fart; and not just because her reaction was also funny; but because it's honestly a huge relief that for once Meredith seems to understand exactly what the problem is.

You know what, screw it, she's gonna laugh.

(Well, at least that probably means she isn’t angry. Meredith is going to wait in silence and not-blush.)

Looking and sounding a lot less tense now, even sort of still smiling a little bit, Sanna replies:

"Right. Okay, well, maybe we can figure out a way around that — other than you translating, I mean — but for now" — gahhhh — "would the witch and/or the fae lawyer be okay with you giving me their contact info? Like, right now?"

She really should've asked for their contact info in the first place, and then asked questions. She's not thinking straight. This is what she gets for not ducking back into the library to warm up before asking about all of this. Though to be fair, she probably didn't think of that because she already wasn't thinking straight. Ugh.

It’s not like Meredith is thinking straight either but when has she ever?

“Both of them should be okay with it. Do you want me to write it down somewhere for you or just tell you or what?” She’s going to give not-guessing another try even if she’s been proven to be very bad at it, at least she’s not likely to do any worse.

"You can tell me, but if you were to also write it down that wouldn't go amiss." She pulls a tiny notepad out of her bag, tears a sheet from it, and hands it to Meredith along with a pen. Then she puts the notepad back in her bag and pulls out her phone. "Hit me." She doesn't think Meredith would take that phrasing too literally, but this is not the right time or place to find out. "Go ahead."

Meredith probably wouldn’t have taken that literally but now we won’t know.

She writes them down for Sanna and hands the paper and pen back to her. Luelle’s mail address is pretty normal, with her name, her surname (Belrose), and her coven’s domain (@rose.cov). However, all Meredith writes for Lythren’s is his name.

"Thanks." Sanna looks at the name for a moment, and then deliberately stops doing that. "Does the lawyer not have an e-mail address? I think you said he can do e-mail." Maybe she misunderstood.

“His name is his e-mail address. He wouldn’t confirm whether it was magic or a programmed trick but it works either way.”
