Two days after the twins left to pack up and settle things where they've been living, Stephen gets a call shortly after dinner.
Collective sigh.
They will resolve to walk around sensing. Maybe even ask around about anything weird. Franklyn and Percy in particular are really good at charming old people into talking about local gossip.
This lady working out in her garden certainly thinks they're very charming.
"Thinking of moving into the area?" She asks after a short greeting, "It's a lovely neighborhood for raising children, you know," she tells them. "The schools around here are some of the nicest in the city, and it's safe enough to let your little ones run around without worrying what might become of them. There's nothing for sale on this street, but there's two over on Cypress, if you'd like to take a look." She hums, "Or, no, I think one of them sold a couple weeks ago."
"Which house was sold? They might have realized something about the other house that we might not necessarily during a visit."
"Hm," she thinks for a moment, "I believe it was 7 Cypress Crescent," she decides. "The house in the middle of the crescent, it's the one that backs onto Cypress Park, though there's the little alley in between as well. I'm sure that's why they chose it, but it couldn't hurt to ask them if they noticed anything off about the other one, it's true."
"Oooh, that does sound convenient."
Percy and Franklyn keep with the small talk for a bit and fish for more information. Otherwise, they will leave her with a pleasant feeling out of this friendly conversation.
A pleasant feeling from a pleasant conversation to add to this pleasant day in such a pleasant neighborhood. There couldn't possibly be anything unpleasant going on around here.
There's a moving van outside the house in the middle of Cypress Crescent, a pair of nondescript burly men ferrying furniture into the building from the van. There's no car in the driveway, but the garage door is closed, so it's hard to say if there's any in there.
There's also a young woman sitting on the porch watching the movers, a tall glass of something cool in hand.
The movers are a little nervous, but mostly focused on their work. It seems to be the woman making them nervous, given how it rises whenever they get close, though one of them also finds her distracting in another way.
The woman herself is very bored, and a little frustrated, and a little amused, possibly by the way that one mover keeps darting glances at her whenever he passes by. She started taking long, languid sips of her drink whenever he got close shortly before Percy jogged by, tilting her head back to expose her throat with exaggerated enjoyment written all over her face. The strategy seems to be working well, which is increasing her amusement, though not doing much for the frustration.
There's two more people inside the house. One feels like pleasure and fascination and sick, sadistic hunger. The other is in a great deal of pain. Their emotions are somewhat... dimmed, but she can feel the occasional spike of terror-fury emerge from beneath the fog, before it fractures again into more diffuse fear. They're either drugged or in too much pain to feel much else. Possibly a combination of the two.
The woman's attention snaps to her when she stumbles and gasps, watching her with curiosity but no concern.
"...Are you alright?" She calls out after a moment.
Percy jumps like surprised on seeing the other woman there. "I-" she says with a shaking voice. "I am. I probably shouldn't have jogged this far."
"Mmm. We've only been here for a week or so, but I don't think I've seen you around here in that time. How far did you jog? " She steps down from the porch, slowly making her way across the lawn towards Percy. "Would you like something to drink? I can send one of these fine boys to grab you something."
"That won't be necessary." Percy withdraws her sense and focus on the woman. This has a visible effect on how well she looks, but she still is a bit shaken. "I am currently moving to town and have been looking around the neighborhoods."
"Supposedly this is a nice one. A bit boring for my taste, but there's a whole city to find more interesting things in, so I suppose there's no reason to complain." She really is very bored. She's a little interested in the conversation - likely because it's something new to do - but that interest is waning.
Okay. Charming mode on. That pain can be shoved way waaay back. "Uh, since you're new too we could go out and figure out what the town has to offer?"
Amused, "Oh, I don't know, my husband-" a word she finds hilarious, apparently "-asked me to keep an eye on those two. He'd be very disappointed if I took off to enjoy the sights without him..." She's clearly tempted, though.
Percy glances down at her hand for a ring, which also masks a look at Jackie's emotional state. "But clearly, you had to help poor me, like a good Samaritan. He doesn't need to know how."
Amusement and mild interest are overcoming boredom at the moment, though there's still a fair amount of the latter. She's wearing two rings - a wedding ring and a simple ruby engagement ring. She wiggles her fingers at Percy with a smile when she notices her looking.
"That's true," she agrees thoughtfully, before pouting, "It's only fair I have a little fun, too. He's been so busy with his new project lately he's hardly paid me any attention at all."
"You know what, you're right." She looks up, noting the fading light of the day, "And it's just getting late enough to enjoy the nightlife, too. Give me a moment to change and I'd love to go out." She backs up a step, and then pauses, "Oh, I'm Jackie, by the way. Jackie Spade."
"Oh, another long name, huh? Mine's actually Jacqueline." She mock shudders, then laughs, "Well, I'll see you in a moment, Percy. Don't go anywhere!"
She jogs back up to the house, slipping inside beneath a table the movers are bringing through the door.
She doesn't. Instead, she just types furiously about what just happened and for the Graywards to do something about it.
