"See, I always interpreted that as 'human' in contrast to 'purely divine in nature' but some people think it does need to actually be a human. Though presumably if it does it'd only be because Osirion has a mostly human population."

"Is the pharaoh permitted a nonhuman wife if he wants one?"

"I think so."

"If this were a proclivity of his I'd maybe give Sothis more space."

"You think you'd be good at it but you don't want to marry into it?"

"Oh, do his wives in fact rule people? A lady in waiting doesn't count."

"I have no idea. Probably not."

"Didn't think so. I'd consider it under more favorable circumstances but probably I'll just never get married. Or maybe I will if I manage to become a god."

"I don't expect it'd be very fun to be a pharaoh's wife, in particular, what with there being so many of them."

"I think very few people are suited to it but presumably Abadar helps him find those."

"I mean, I hope he's not picking randomly. Or based on, uh, bone structure."

"I'm sure our insistence on this point must seem very naive to foreigners but the pharaoh's really not just a human king."

"Probably has all the wives just for extra political advisors and has never even considered how they look."

Glare. "I think so, yes. It's what I'd do if I were appointed to that much responsibility and it'd be astonishing if Abadar couldn't make his aspect as serious about their job as any random cleric."

"You're not a random cleric, though, right, what percentage make eighth level? One in three hundred? And there's a sense in which Abadar picked you from the entire population of Osirion entirely on merit, making you one in a couple hundred thousand. He has to pick the pharaoh from a much smaller population than that. Probably he's still very meritorious because he can Wish himself smarter than me and wiser than you and then stack that with the fanciest headband and that'll do well for most anyone."

"Even if the pharaoh were in fact advertised to be Abadar straight-up possessing some dude I think you might be overestimating how impressed I would be about that, anyway."

"The gods have a lot of limitations -"

"You could put it that way."

" - but I think they're different than the limitations human kings have. Gods don't go to lengths to stay in power or crush their rivals for the throne or become a lich or unexpectedly have a change of heart - in a good direction or a bad one - I think it'd be an error to assume the pharaoh can be lobbied to change his mind on, say, charitable healing services, and I think it's the same error to assume he's using his time on pretty girls just because that's what some humans would do." 

"Hey now, I agreed with you that he definitely wasn't doing that."

"I don't think we actually have that much information on the private lives of gods. Do we?"

"I guess not."

"In other countries they tell more risque stories about the gods, I think."
