He appears to try to think of a response, think better of several, and give up.

"See, most of the things I think of are things that are especially rude knowing you've heard them before, such as 'did you know that killing babies is wrong' and 'wait if you're a matriarchy can't you just make the dads stick around'."

"I'm actually not convinced on the first thing. See, suppose you have a drow baby. Whose mom has killed babies before and will kill babies again and will have extra babies specifically in order to kill them and is probably planning to kill some medium-sized kids too. And you can hand that baby off to some middle-of-the-road sorts who like to hang out in the Boneyard bringing up random babies. Does it really matter all that much if the intervening step involves feeding the baby to a spider, considering? But I haven't personally killed any babies, if you're secretly five babies in a coat and anxious about it."

"Well, it's bad for the mother. Guess it's kind of hard to argue that it's bad for the baby. - the mom is going to kill some medium-sized kids too?"

"Yeah. The dead babies are mostly boys. They wait a while with girls, see if we're any good. In the non-technical sense."

"Haven't checked them all. I've been told that much is all the same but perhaps I'm the victim of a vicious propaganda campaign."
