Three twelve-year-olds are gathered in a bathroom, copying a diagram from a book onto the floor in chalk.
"Do you know what all this writing means?" asks the green-eyed boy.
"No," says the bushy-haired girl, "and that worries me too, but we need to find out who the Heir of Slytherin is and this ritual is the best we've got."
Eventually, one or another of them draws the last bit of the outer circle.
"Thanks." He grabs a spot on a couch next to Hermione and tries to convince her she doesn't need to take notes.
(He saw the first ten minutes of Jurassic Park several years ago, and then listened to the rest of the soundtrack after Dudley chased him out of the room. He wants to see the dinosaurs.)
Students are appreciative! Theodore Nott sneaks in ten minutes late. Some of the Hufflepuffs start talking to the characters like it's a stage play.
This time it's the cheese kind!
Hopefully everybody's getting along okay and sharing the beanbags Cam added to supplement the existing couches and chairs nicely.
Except for one whispered argument between the "yell at the characters like you're at a play" faction and the "be quiet so you don't miss anything" faction, everyone is chill! After the movie is over some of the Ravenclaws want to know if they can take one of the beanbags back to their common room (the blue one, naturally).
"Sure, you're welcome to it. Anybody else want a souvenir? I'm having the place vanished tonight, it's served its purpose as a diorama."
In that case Hermione would like some of the books! The library here doesn't have much in the way of muggle fiction and she misses it.
Cam flies back to his house after his office hours, but during the day between classes it's not worth the trip. That is what the staffroom is for.
On the first Friday of term, McGonagall and Sprout are in there when he stops by, looking grim.
"I should have insisted on it. I don't insist on it for anyone else but I should have insisted on it this time," McGonagall says, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"Insisted on what?" he asks, squinting at a portrait to assess if one of the chairs in it moved.
"Reviewing Rubeus' lesson plans. He told me he had 'something exciting' planned for the first class and so naturally a student had to go to the hospital wing."
Sprout chimes in with "From what I heard, the Malfoy boy heard the safety precautions and immediately violated them all at the first opportunity, but of course 'how to stop children from doing that' is one of the first things a professor's got to learn."
"Hoo boy. He's doing creatures, right, those are going to be hard to predict perfectly even if the kids do all try their best to follow the instructions. Did Poppy patch the kid up okay?"
"Oh yes, he was in and out in ten minutes, Poppy can heal cuts in her sleep. And if it had been any other student that would be the end of it."
Sprout starts laughing and then immediately stifles it; McGonagall skips straight to the stifling.
"No, merely a grudge against Rubeus and a very", tiny pause, "influential father."
"Rubeus' appearance has led to a certain amount of speculation that he is half-giant."
