Maitimë seriously questions her own judgment on every level.

It is a very clever trap. She says so.

"Thank you!"

"- you okay?"

"Okay. Good game."

"Thanks."

"It's later than I thought." She stands up.

Can the Valar cure cancer, mostly just so humans can see what they did and see if they can replicate it. Can the Valar do spot interventions for hurricanes. Extradition treaties, so many extradition treaties.

Can the Valar cure infectious diseases, because unlike cancer that's one-and-done per.

...in Valinor they could. If they're afflicting all of Earth, no, not quickly.

A Vala could move to Earth and start building up power there but perhaps that's not a good idea.

Yeah let's not mages will probably have most of the infectious diseases sorted in a few decades anyway.

And she interviews new mages.

They too are fourteen year old kids, but instead of having picked up lucid dreaming or sensing the presence of other minds they have learned to levitate themselves slightly or affect the ambient temperature.

Her expectations are better calibrated. Bright and serious and willing to come live with aliens.

Some of them are that! One of them would rather not be sent home for the holidays please her mom is terrible!

Then she definitely doesn't have to go home for the holidays - "my mom ran away from home when she was sort of your age, Valinor's a good place for it -"

Well the Elves still have to tell her mom that she is doing mage stuff and send most of the money home she just doesn't want to have to physically travel there.

What a pleased mage this is.

Oh, good.

Her cousin invites her to go raft down a river, get away from the palace a few weeks. It sounds like a good idea. She goes.
