I'm not understanding quite what it's supposed to be like to be unable to do something.

I haven't actually sworn any oaths binding over future actions, most people go their whole lives and never do, but if it's relevant to guessing what psions will be able to do I can come up with a safe battery of tests once I'm back in the city and bounce it to you.

It might be. Are the orc oaths negative or positive?

Didn't come up during the hearing.

Might matter. I guess we can ask the Valar when they come.

Yeah. Anyway, Melkor swore that they would not regret permitting her to do this, that she would affect no living beings other than instructing orcs in this way, and that she would use no abilities not available to the standard Elf, for the duration of her release, and then return to their custody.

Is that fakeable?

Never heard of it but depending how long it'd take her to do it, and depending whether psions can do it at all, we could hire someone with the range to see whether anything goes wrong.

Not likely even with a staggering amount of resources to get ahold of better range than a year, and unless that psion also happens to be a remote viewer that only works if the something going wrong becomes known to them.

I wouldn't think it'd take a year, she just has to talk to them -

Is this the sum total of parole under discussion?

I mean, I think the Valar are averse to keeping her prisoner literally forever and are hopeful that this works out well and demonstrates the feasibility of eventually letting her out under strict enough oaths.

If a psion can handle the orcs that landscape changes a lot too.

Yeah. Melkor at least did a convincing show of 'relieved that there were prospects of a solution that freed them fully' and encouraged them to delay the hearing a few Years to learn more.

Okay, a few Years is lots of time to think and have psions trying stuff.

Yep. Is there or could there eventually be some way to directly check her intentions -

Psion mindreaders are not as consent-respectful as osanwë, although I don't know if they'll work normally on Valar.

So if she's as regretful as she's claiming to be there are good prospects of being able to let her out on a timeframe tolerable to a Vala and if she's not we probably don't need her to free all her former slaves.

And when she arrives in the city - okay, want to play around with terrifying compulsion magic?

How delightful.

My mother's curious about everything but as far as I know she's never even touched these. But if you put an expiration date on things the only danger is that you'll swear something without an expiration date while under the influence of the short-term ones, and I think if I don't touch anything mind-altering that shouldn't be a problem. To be even safer, we can actually not do any of this, you can just check what would have happened if we did.

Yeah, I guess there's no reason for anything with a longer than one hour duration to be sworn for testing.

I can't think of one and it's better to be careful.
