"Is there a list of all the rules?"

 "Probably somewhere? But there are a lot of them. You mostly do not accidentally run afoul of any that people are going to prosecute you for if you have, like, common sense and cultural awareness, but since I'm not super sure you have either I guess I will have to write up a list of the major ones. Uh, no attacking people, no stealing things, no sexually assaulting people and if you need that unpacked please ask the other you because I'm really not up for it, no trespassing on other people's property without permission, no buying or possessing certain kinds of drugs, uh, some practical stuff about how to interact with cars and streets that I will explain once you have seen cars and streets, I think you can probably get in trouble for threatening to hurt people so don't do that to be safe, children have to go to school unless you're officially homeschooling them, more stuff if you for some reason mean to start a business I guess...? - I think this is part of why they want me to babysit you a little."

He looks at Cecelia.

"You can tell us the rules before we break them, and if we decide we don't like them we can come back here?"

"I am mostly but not literally a hundred percent sure I can, yes. And yeah, I think - they're not trying to give you fewer options."

"It - sounds like we could try it."

"If we get into trouble for breaking the rules I guess we can just come back to Milliways then."

"Yeah."

"...I don't know if you guys get an absolute get out of jail free card? But - just don't rape or murder anybody. Probably it'll be fine."

It's really odd to say 'rape and murder' like that as if these are comparable things but he decides not to get into that right now. 

"All right. Let's get your other son and bring the kids breakfast and tell them we're moving to Kansas."

Nodnod.

"Cassie can you get things from the bar -"

"Yep." 

She gets some breakfast pastries and sausages and eggs from the bar and heads on upstairs.

The kids have already eaten their sandwiches. They eat their breakfast sullenly. 

"We're going to pick up your brothers and move to a place called Kansas. There's lots of food there and there will be other children for you to play with."

"We want to go home," says the girl. "With our brothers. And the baby. You don't have a right to any of them."

"Among my people she has the strongest rights to all of them."

"Among ours she's a kidnapper and a traitor to the realm."

"And yet we're among ours and not yours."

"I think we were just complaining about that," she says, coldly. 

" - okay, so, the way this is going to work is that we are going to take you to Kansas, and we are going to give you candy and pizza and video games and, I dunno, show you Star Wars, and if you still hate it in a week then we can revisit your complaints and talk this out, but you are going to give us that week and see what you're missing, and then I will be able to take you seriously when you say you want to go home. Okay?"

"You can't buy us off," says the boy.

"I can try! Please come downstairs the next time you get hungry. Or now, I don't really care where you guys hang out. You guys have anything else that needs saying right now?"

"We can go downstairs and learn Kansas courtesies."
