A dragon explores space, finds Amenta.

The secrets of Delver technology could not resist decryption forever. While the tools they wielded are deeply weird, jealously guarded, and immensely complicated, living beings built the tools that brought aliens to the dragons' first world. The great calamity left ruins aplenty behind, and once grown the Seeker gathered these old tools as their very favorite sort of treasure. Dragons are not intelligent in quite the same way as a No-Tail, but they are far from stupid. They live forever and can be very determined if they set their mind to it.

The Seeker brought all its tools and treasure along with it when the world was evacuated ahead of the Tailless's relentless growth and hunger for resources. It studied under the great elder Darktooth on the new world, studied together with Darktooth (an arrangement not very common with dragons, as they are not particularly social), for a very long time. And eventually, by application of the hard claws of experiment and calculation and theorizing, the universe revealed its workings, cold and precise and mathematical. Creating more and more tools of the highest sophistication, and teaching others of its kind in exchange for wealth, and even spawning offspring and guiding them to adulthood, was all satisfying for a long while, but eventually... He got bored.

And so, the Seeker wondered if the long sleep for the journey between stars was really necessary, and got to work seeing about making it not. He managed it eventually, and built a starship, and went exploring. Stars come in a beautiful variety of kinds, and the worlds around them do too, but very, very few bear any sign of life. They are mostly barren and empty.

...Oh, this one is emitting curious amounts of low-frequency light. Worth investigating. Pushing a starship faster than light requires a touch of magic (at least for now), which he provides.

In the outer solar system of a certain star, well above the plane of the ecliptic, a black sphere the size of a city block appears and has a look around with powerful telescopes.

The house is not very climbable but there are places he can get purchase if he doesn't mind scratching it up.

He starts to try to climb but immediately realizes that.

...Hmm, follow the no scratching rule, or a better view of the stars? Looking at the stars seems really important right now for some reason.

He sits there thinking for another while, then decides in favor of patience and goes back to the bench and stargazes, head pointed straight up at the sky. After a while he starts singing, reasonably loud despite his small size.

He's far enough away from the house that he doesn't wake anybody up, though Estin appreciates it.

He goes back inside and back to the bed after a couple hours, thanking Estin on the way in (though he feels weird about it) and then sleeping through to the morning.

When he wakes up Tish and Haemi have been up for a while and hidden some of the shinies around!

Ooh!! He will wander around looking for them... And sniffing for places Tish and Haemi have been recently. It's actually very hard to tell because they're in the house pretty often anyway, though.

You said you would keep some shiny things for educational milestones. What kind of educational milestones will I have?

"You could learn to read, or learn enough math to pass assessment tests," suggests Tish.

Those don't sound like Draak-ish things to learn but he's on Amenta so that's fine!

(Sniff sniff wander, are there any shiny things around the piano? Are there any by the kitchen?)

There are none by the piano but there is one by the colander cupboard.

Shiny!!!

He carefully fetches it up to under the bed, just like the coin, tail wagging.

What kinds of things do Amentans learn besides reading and math?

"We learn history and science and civics and art and music and politics and economics and rhetoric and literature and languages and all kinds of specialized things depending on what we want to do with our lives."

Science and math and reading will do for him for now. Maybe history? He's not sure what civics or economics are.

"Civics is about being a responsible citizen - what the laws are and how we can engage with our government and be good neighbors. Economics is about how goods and services wind up reaching people who want them."

Economics and civics sound really weird.

"Well, everyone needs a little civics but you don't have to learn economics if it doesn't interest you."

I should meet everyone who might be here so I won't be scared they're not supposed to be here if they are. And I wanted to climb the house to see the stars better but I would have scratched it. How do you get up there?

"We usually don't get to the roof of the house but when you can fly you can fly up there. I'd worry about you falling if you went before you knew how to fly. There are a lot of people who might be here sometimes. There's security and servants and also delivery people and the purples who farm the estate and our families and friends. It'd be hundreds of them if we treid to get them all here at once."

I'm not going to be able to fly for a long time. I tried yesterday but now I just know that.

I don't know how to recognize anybody without meeting them... Estin scared me because I didn't know if she was supposed to be there.

"Yes, she left us a note. We can warn you before we have guests and introduce you to the rest of the security and during the day those would be the only surprises outside an emergency... could you recognize people from pictures or would that be missing important telepathic stuff?"

...Maybe. Scent and telepathic stuff is easiest to recognize.

"I'll get you pictures of the greys and we'll try to get them all introduced. It's not your job to worry about who's supposed to be here, though."

If I don't know if they're supposed to be here I don't know if they'll try to hurt me!

"- I mean that it's our job and the greys' to make sure only people who belong are here. It's okay for you to just assume we've done that."

He tilts his head.

I don't think I can do that. I think I will always be looking out for things that might want to hurt me.

"That sounds really stressful."
