...principle the fourth, other people have a right to know if someone is Evil, because it is relevant to whether they are trustworthy and whether you want to be in their service, and it is a wrong to them to know something that would change their course greatly and not say it (unless you'd be betraying a confidence).

Synthesis: there is a serious and important obligation to make it known to people if they are Evil and might not know, and to make it known to those who rely on them or obey them, but you should endeavor to learn whether that is in fact the situation you are in before you make it known in a context where that is likely to be lethal...

(To external observers, Iomedae knelt as if to tie her shoe, did not tie her shoe, and is now kneeling on the grass either lost in thought, praying, or intently studying a spot in the mud.)

"Hey - you're our newbie right?" Haley has appeared besides Iomedae to finally fulfill her duties as chatelaine.

"You don't have to kneel for the queen unless she's calling you into court. A lil curtsey does fine." Haley pronounces curtsey a lot like cutesy and does indeed curtsy quite cutely, with a little bob of her head, as the queen walks past on her way to somewhere else.

"The queen," repeats Iomedae carefully. It's obvious who she's referring to, and approximately what the word means. Paladins are supposed to be incapable of fear but her heart is distractingly fast and loud right now. "Thank you, ma'am."

"Yep! That's Her Majesty! She's lovely, you'll like her. I'm not a ma'am - remember me, I'm Haley, I think I've seen you at practice?"

Haley holds out a hand with an implicit offer to help Iomedae up.

Iomedae stands. She does not think that Her Majesty is lovely and she does not think she'll like her but she thinks it is not lying, to not say so.

She needs to not be here.

"I am supposed to help with the bake sale," she says, and then that does feel too close to lying so she adds "and I want to because I want to leave here now."

"Oh. I - hope I haven't offended you? You can kneel if you want to, I just - wanted to help. Sorry."

Haley retracts her hand awkwardly.

"...I'm a foster child," says Iomedae, puzzled.

"You... sure are, yeah... why do you tell everyone, though? I mean - gosh, sorry, that's probably mean of me."

"I don't know the English. If a person say something, and it is not, and they know it, that's -"

"Uh. You mean lying?" That is... such a total non sequitur but you have to appreciate that Iomedae at least admits she doesn't speak English.

"Yes. It is lying, to no say I a foster child."

"I guess if.... someone asked and you said no, sure? But nobody asks because we wouldn't violate your privacy like that -" oh she probably does not know those words, hmm, "Like, we don't want to know? And it would be okay to lie if someone asked because that's pretty rude of them to ask."

"I don't know what 'it is okay' means. Maybe America no swords me for it. But God leave me and I no go to Heaven." She says this quite conversationally while trotting off in the direction of the bake sale; she'd like to get far away from the Queen if she acceptably can at least until she's determined whether she is an actual outright fiend.

You know what, she can just.... not engage in that. She can let Iomedae walk away.

(But... isn't it her duty as chatelaine to explain things to newbies? ...Nope, this one is above her paygrade actually. Raoulin is at the bake sale. He's a million years old and has seen everything before. This one can be his.)

Haley gives Jenny a confused but sincere, "Sorry for whatever I said," before she wanders off to see if the barn has any free food.

Jenny has no idea what Iomedae's deal is but is glad she's going to check out the bake sale instead of just doing deadly weapons for the entire rest of the day. She didn't want to insist but she really thinks the bake sale is a nice way to give back to this lovely community and is probably also good math practice!

Is Raoulin Evil? She is careful to keep her evil-sensing pointed in his direction and away from the Queen.

Raoulin isn't evil.

Katherine - the other volunteer at the stall currently - might be. There's something in her direction. Only very weak, maybe first circle.

"Iomedae!"

Warm smile. Raoulin gets up and leans over the table to offer her and Jenny water bottles from his beneath-the-table stash.

Part of Raoulin had been worried that Iomedae wouldn't actually come back to the fundraiser. There are so many distracting and fun things to do at any SCA event, and it's easy to lose track of time, and he would not actually fault most teenage newbies for being late to a volunteering shift that they only questionably agreed to under the circumstances. He's glad she's here so that they can hopefully finally actually talk to her. So long as Jenny finds literally anywhere else to be, and with any luck she'll be bored by the fundraiser before long. Most of the potential customers already checked out the stall earlier in the day, and now it's just him sitting behind the stall while Katherine relabels various pieces of donated garb.

"Have you been enjoying the event so far?"

Iomedae really needs a complete theory of when it's acceptable to politely omit some information! She needs it right away, and she could have guessed she might need it and should have thought about it while picking strawberries. "I shot as a man," she says, "and I do not want to say more, I'm sorry sir."

Iomedae shot a man and now pleads the fifth????

He studies Iomedae for a long moment.

(She really is a bit of a puzzle, but she also genuinely seems to be a human teenager who doesn't deserve to be analysed like a puzzle. It's a conundrum. He's pretty sure he misunderstood and she hasn't shot anyone. She'd be more upset if she'd shot somebody, right?)

Raoulin turns to Jenny with a quizzical eyebrow and a small, helpless shrug. "Has everything gone well? I hope everyone has been kind and welcoming?"

"Everyone has been lovely." Jenny looks baffled by her foster child but not upset the way a person would be upset if their foster child had shot a man.

It is so understandable to be baffled by this particular foster child. Raoulin feels a surge of sympathy for this poor mundane woman who probably understands even less than he does about what is going on. He's quietly happy that his kingdom is able to offer her at least some hospitality and a break, if nothing else.

"Well, Iomedae, it's a warm day. You should drink that water bottle and then I was wondering if you'd be alright helping Katherine here with labelling prices on some of these donated things?"

He gestures at Katherine, who gives Iomedae a thumbs up and then goes back to peeling stickers off a sheet.

"Jenny, you can of course sit around here if you'd like, but it's a bit slow and I'm afraid it'll be dreadfully boring. I think the queen is hosting a ladies' tea in the barn and I'm sure you'd be more than welcome there if none of the other activities interest you." The easiest way to lie is to mostly tell the truth; things really will be dreadfully boring if Jenny sticks around.
