After speaking with Fazil, and then catching two minutes with a Lastwall paladin after the evening Iomedaean service to ask for a brief description of how people opt out of the military in Lastwall, Jaume is prepared to attempt Politics. Things pass if they're obvious to enough walks of life, but this isn't; he's going to need backing. He wants to talk to somebody on Rights, somebody on Virtuous Churches, somebody on the Army committee. He's been pulled into various committee sessions before to cast Truthtellings, so he knows some of the relevant faces - who can he catch first?
Not the paladin. He doesn't really want the conversation to be about how he's Evil. Probably paladins who have been doing assizes in Cheliax for a year and a half don't make every conversation about how everyone is Evil - it'd become wearisome even for paladins - and he probably doesn't even detect, but - at any rate, not the paladin. He'd probably feel differently if they were Abadaran paladins, but Abadar is not so given to paladins as is Iomedae.
"Sower."
"I hope to see introduced to the convention a bill to grant an exception on the grounds of conscience from military conscription. They do the same in Lastwall, for anyone who has been chosen for or elected to join a noncombatant order, or who have other moral objections to participating in the army."
"I think the members of the Rights committee may find it an interesting proposition, though I've also reached out to members of Virtuous Churches and the Army committee. The Army committee may be the most natural place to incubate the bill itself but its success will depend on it being well-crafted and not meeting fatal objections on the floor. Would you be willing to bring it up in your committee meeting, and direct any replies to the idea to me?"
"I dunno when we'll get a moment, there's some talkative ladies in the committee, but if I can, all right."
