If we're nervous we don't have to let any of 'em into the country. Or any more of them, at least.

Ah. That does make me feel a little better.

Are we training today?

Yeah. Let's leave from a couple blocks away, though. We can at least make him talk to a bunch of students to learn you train with me.

Sounds good.

They've started training Karen to defend against all kinds of bizarre weapons, because there are a bunch of creatures out there which specialize with scythes or chakrams or whatever. Most of these things are unusual precisely because they're not spectacularly useful but it's still good to know how to defend against them.

Karen is very excited to be training again! Training is good and she sort of missed it over the summer.

"They should have done training! They're a military, right, they have ever fought a war, they probably know at least some things."

"They were trying really hard not to act like they were military. We did a lot of climbing drills and stuff, and those were fun? But it wasn't the same thing. - oh, I did notice a thing when I was there? I have no idea how long it takes for a thing to tire me out. Like, I know how long it takes me to get bored of something and I have a sense for about how much I can lift, but apart from hell day last spring I just don't really remember ever being really exhausted by anything since I became the slayer? Is that a thing we should test or figure out at some point, or - ?"

"Oh, huh. Yeah, that seems useful to know. We could run to Los Angeles."

"Can we?"

"Well, depending how fast you run, possibly not tonight. But this weekend, absolutely."

This weekend is gonna be awesome.

"Cool, let's do it! All right, so then - other than figuring out what to do about the council and the Mayor, anything else we're working on this school year?"

"Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement has set up a task force to examine accusations of illegal industrial dumping, about twenty miles north of here. We should keep an eye on them, make sure they're at least trying their best, yeah?"

"Sounds good."

"Then we're all set. Betcha it'll be a nice, quiet, peaceful year."

"Maybe. I think we'll be ready for it, in any case."

Wesley Wyndam-Pryce is waiting for her the next day after school, as promised.

"Karen! I trust you have no commitments this afternoon?"

"Well, Thursdays are usually when the journalism club meets, but it doesn't start up until next week, so yeah, I guess I'm free."

"Good, good, let's mark out your whole schedule so that we can devote as much time as possible to training and to fighting the forces of darkness."

"...so the problem with that is that my schedule is already pretty full of training and fighting the forces of darkness, but I don't really know if I want to invite you to either."

"Karen, I can't help you if you don't trust me. In any case, I think you underestimate my abilities. I know that you've been training with your gym teacher for the past several months, and I know equally well that your gym teacher is a demon."

"I approve of your basic investigation skills. He's not a demon, though."

"Well, he's obviously not human."

"There are lots of things in the world that aren't humans and aren't demons. Like. You know. Raccoons."

"A poor example. Modern raccoons are typically up to three percent demonic in origin."
