"Aw." That sounds like Sir Anaid probably doesn't get to be a dashing swordsman after all.

"So you're from another world, and that's why you have species and classes we've never heard of?" one of the other knights says. "Is there anything around here that's been confusing so far that we could maybe try and explain?"

Elan thinks for a second.

"I think all the unfamiliar monsters, like gorillaphants and tuskmongers and I don't know if sneevils and vurrmen count as monsters, that I already heard about I got explained to me. There are probably more, but I bet it would take a while to go through all the kinds of monster. Oh, I was wondering—are there any people here who can do magic that they weren't born already able to do?"

"I don't think anyone is born knowing how to do magic, if that's what you mean..."

"No, you're asking about the thing where only some people can be mages, right? I'm not an expert on magic or anything, but I know it's a thing. Some people are born with the natural...aptitude, or whatever, to use magic, and some people just aren't."

"Yeah, that second thing is what I mean. Back home… I don't know if literally anyone could do magic if they wanted, but all of the brainy abilities—intelligence, wisdom, charisma—have a class that uses it to cast with. And all of them except sorcerer can be picked up if you study them or if a god likes you."

"Oh, well, if a god likes you then all bets are off, probably. That happen a lot where you're from?"

"Oh, yeah, there's loads of clerics! Do you guys not have churches here?"

"Uh, what's a church?"

"Is it like a temple? I think those have something to do with the Avatars, right?"

"Do I look like a priest to you?"

Elan's gotta think about this one too!

"Yeah, basically! Except it's more like the organization that runs the temples. You can technically be a worshipper of a god without being a cleric, but most people who care about the gods a lot end up being clerics, I think. Definitely anyone who works in a temple is a cleric, and anyone who gets called a priest is at least mid-level."

"Here they're just all called priests."

     "Or sometimes monks."

"Aren't monks from monasteries? Are those the same thing?"

"Do I look like a monk to you?" (General laughter.)

Elan laughs too!

"Our monks are a whole different thing! They're super serious and good at punching and kicking. But they aren't monkeys," he adds with a hint of old disappointment.

"Hah, a monkey monk, that'd be a funny thing to see!"

"I heard there are monkey pirates. My cousin's friend's brother who's a harbormaster had his hat stolen by one."

          "Your cousin's friend's brother, huh."

"It's true! My wife's brother-in-law went to Osprey Cove on business and he said the place was crawling with them."

Elan basks in the stories of monkey pirates and other adventures for the rest of the meal. It's really neat how fun all the knights are! He can supply his own thoughts if asked or if he thinks of something he really wants to say, but it's important to get acclimated to this new place.

He remembers Rolith mentioning that Sir Cull would be able to help with sleeping arrangements. Is he in the mess hall when Elan finishes eating?

Here he is!

"So you two need rooms for the night? Any unusual requirements I should know about, what with one of you being from another world and the other being nonhuman? We don't get many moglins staying here; they usually go on to Falconreach."

Elan thinks for a second.

"I was gonna say that I'm pretty sure that I don't need anything special, but maybe I should look first in case there's something that's so obviously normal to the both of us that I don't even think of it."

"Very wise. Right then, this way!"

The room he shows Elan is small and plain, but it has the essentials: bed, washstand, candles, chamberpot...there's even a little stand for his sword. Everything is clean and in good condition, unlike some of the worse inns he's stayed at.

Everything looks pretty normal, except for this being a place without anachronistic indoor-plumbed restrooms, apparently. Elan's okay with this, though. It's definitely way better than the Rob-U-While-U-Sleep Inn, and more comfortable than having to get used to sleeping on a boat, even a fancy rich people boat.

"Nope, that looks pretty much like a bedroom to me!"

     "How about you, little moglin?

Twilly shuffles his feet nervously, ears folding down. "Umm, well...moglins usually sleep with their family or friends in big blanket piles. But if there aren't any other moglins in Oaklore tonight, then, um...Elan, could I shares with you tonight? I doesn't take up very much space!"

Elan counts as family or friends??

"Yeah! I love sleepovers!"

"Yay! In that case Twillies doesn't need anything else...unless maybe you could find a moglin-sized washstand?"

(Elan's washstand is a comfortable height for humans, i.e. several feet above Twilly's head. He'd need Elan to lift him up there or fetch down the basin—and then pour the water for him, because the jug is almost as big as he is.)

"...yes, quite. I'll, er, see what I can do."

As he walks away, he can be heard muttering under his breath, "Maybe a footstool...?"

"Thank you!"

Elan sets his backpack down next to the sword stand, and then puts his new sword on the stand for fun.

"Let's see, if there aren't enough blankets in here, I've got a cape and some old clothes…"

The bed will be SO cosy.

At some point some servants show up with a little bowl and a tiny jug from the kitchen, along with a smaller table to put them on and a footstool in case Twilly still can't quite reach (which he can't).

And then they can go to bed! Twilly is a warm soft snuggly teddybear moglin.

Yay! Elan has some minor blanket hogging tendencies but is a decent bedfellow otherwise.

In the morning, after doing freshening-up activities, he stuffs his clothes into his backpack and retrieves the new sword from its stand.

"I wonder if we'll be staying here tonight, too… this place has a lot of handy stuff around but who knows what mysterious things might happen or mysterious places we might go!"
