Well, that sounds probably good, and like one of the things she wants, but if they're relying on 'custom' then those are, you know, the customs left over from the flaying people alive days.

"It doesn't additionally give her any implied powers over me, not listed separately in the contract? Or - any other part of it?"

"It would be easier to give you confident judgments if the courts were open but no Lawful court I am aware of would interpret the language 'the Delegate is entitled to the protection that conveys by law and by custom.' as imposing obligations on the delegate."

So, probably not, but maybe, because they're relying on custom here and this is Cheliax, where by custom they can probably just kill you with impunity.

Cool.

"All right, thank you."

Her other business tonight involves going to the temple of Abadar anyway, so she supposes that she can ask the Abadarans what their prices are.

"....nope, one more question. In the other Lawful courts you are familiar with, approximately what amount of money would damages to a duchess's reputation tend to come out to, off the top of your head?"

"In Taldor I would be surprised for a Duchess to bring suit over a matter that did not cost her at least several hundred Absalom pounds."

"How do you tell, if you aren't actually losing any money?"

"You would argue to the court that the matter had affected your - marriage prospects, or your ability to hire and retain staff, or your ability to attract investment, and lawyers would try to assign values to those things."

Ah.

....you can obviously lose an unfathomable amount of money on bad legislation, and it sounds like possibly this isn't considered a matter for civil courts because nobody else, like, does this. Though it sounds like Korva can only specifically be held liable if Chelam loses anything as a result of Korva having leaked information to anyone, which is at least only one specific thing to worry about.

All right. Abadarans, then. She'll thank the lawyer again and be on her way.
