The Conspiracies of Iomedae [open]
surprisingly accurate in most of the particulars

There are many men who have turned away from Asmodeus, who have found themselves in need of guidance as to matters of the conscience. Those men have understandably turned to Iomedae and her Church to guide them, thinking that such a Lawful and Good goddess would lead them to virtue. Yet this is a grievous error, for her priests seek not our prosperity nor even our worship, but rather our ruin.

This can be seen clearly merely by examining the actions of the servants of her church since they arrived in Westcrown. I shall not name them, lest foolish men be inspired to anarchic and Evil violence, which runs counter to the intent of every Good or Lawful god save Iomedae. I do not wish such violence, and hope only that these men and women are arrested and tried for their crimes, or if they have committed no crimes are exiled to Lastwall, where they can do no damage to our country. But nameless though they be, I am far from the only man in Westcrown who can speak to these deeds.

I speak first of that priestess of Iomedae who stirred up anarchic mobs against our own people and called for the heads of the Queen's chosen nobility, merely because those men fell short of the standards of Iomedae. She called for all Chelish subjects to take up pitchforks and stones and rise up against their rulers, and so they did. I have heard it said by some that she herself led a mob against the Archduke of the Heartlands (falsely decried as a Thrune by ignorant men), by others that she was hung from a lamppost by the very mobs she started; whichever is true, her anarchic ways have left much of our city in ash and rubble.

I speak next of a holy warrior of Iomedae, himself likewise among the delegates to the convention, for though his words have received far less attention, he called for all the lords of Cheliax to be permanently granted exemption from taxation. Such a proposal would be ruinous to our country, particularly considering the volatility of our currency, and a wise and clever man such as him can have had no other attention than to bring such ruin about.

But I further speak of a more little-known act of anarchy, which I witnessed myself earlier this day, and which spurred me to write this pamphlet. For I was accosted by a child, offering me a copy of the wicked pamphlet, condemned by our Queen, by the title of "BE IT KNOWN to the people of CHELIAX that the following are UNREPENTANT DIABOLISTS," which sought to stir up the hatred of men towards ordinary people with vile slander. When I inquired of the orphan where he had received such pamphlets, I discovered that he was ignorant of their contents, but that a priest of Iomedae had set him to the delivery of such pamphlets; and through magical means, which I will not name lest wicked men learn to deceive them, I became confident that he spoke truthfully. I have of course reported this matter to the city watch, as all men who have learned of crimes ought to do, but I wish as well to warn all men of Westcrown that such a thing happened.

I speak finally of a sermon which I attended last week at the temple of Iomedae, which at the time struck me as innocuous, for I realize now that I was ignorant of its true intentions. For the priest of Iomedae spoke of how, when all Evil had been defeated in Cheliax, she would forsake our country and render unto us no aid, not even the meagerest of healing. I am certain that many of the men in attendance feared what would happen should this come to pass, and by his words he has stirred up their spirits towards the cause of Evil.

All these actions point towards a single goal: the total destruction of Cheliax. 'But,' I hear you cry, 'is not Iomedae Lawful and Good? Why should she wish our country to come to ruin?' The answer is simple. Iomedae is the goddess of defeating Evil, and she cannot countenance the great Evils that many here have done, even if they have turned their souls towards the Good. She wishes rather to bring us all to ruin, that we may suffer for the Evils we did under Asmodeus, for to allow us to survive and prosper is anathema to her. Perhaps this is Goodness, perhaps the crimes her servants have stirred up are not anarchic; but if so I want no part of her Goodness. If it is wickedness to wish my city to be safe, if it is wickedness to wish my city to be peaceful, if it is wickedness to wish my city to prosper, then perhaps I am wicked; I have never claimed to be blameless. But if we wish Westcrown to be standing next month, we must pray that the Crown expel the servants of Iomedae from our lands.
