There are layers of trampled pamplets on the cobblestones. 

She's going with her idiot Count to his inn again, to talk about how they could possibly get along. Imagine getting to leave, and then coming back to this mess of a world. She's vaguely aware that going with a noble boy to an inn isn't seen as proper, but she's not really a woman anymore.

She never was. 

The streets today have an energy she doesn't like, but it's not like she's been here for very long. Most days she's walked right into the ocean after she was done. 

She doesn't really want to marry this boy, but she's going to have to. For duty. For a brief moment, she thinks of Valia, and then suppresses the thought. She can have someone for real after her duty to her peasants is done.
