doesn't anybody hold you, baby
Aren't you a little short for a princess?

It isn't, exactly, Leia Organa's first day as an aide in the Imperial Senate. That was a week ago, and she spent it filling out spreadsheets.

It's the first day that Senator Bail Organa has run out of plausibly deniable leeway to hide her in his office, though, and so she's walking through the halls of the Imperial Senate with her chin up, firm but not angry expression on her face, gaze fixed unwaveringly ahead of her, walking like she doesn't plan to be interrupted, all without seeming like she's hurrying.

She's just taking messages to other Senators right now, all ones with a reputation for being nice to new aides. They're not even all her father's allies; he tries to be subtle about who his friends are. (He hasn't told her who all his friends are, not yet.)

It's common busy work for a new aide, and Leia gets that, and she's appreciating the chance to get an actual look at people and overhear new gossip. Really. She is.

(But she'd really like to be doing something more than this. Something exciting.)

- And then Leia rounds a corner without slowing down much, and the hallway is really supposed to be deserted, but the carpet's thick enough you don't hear footsteps -

Permalink Mark Unread

'Supposed to' is not really a set of words that apply to the Imperial Princess. Words that do apply to the Imperial Princess: 'startled', 'eeping', 'falling flat on her ass'.

Also: 'smoking hot', 'a total babe', 'somewhat shorter than she looks in the holos'.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia yelps - tries to stumble back before they collide - fails, and then falls on the other girl instead, catching herself on her outstretched palms, on either side of the girls' torso.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nice tits.

"...Hi there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no.

" - Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So not that I mind the view or anything, but do you think you could move? Or at least let us roll over, the guards'll be very cranky if they catch up and you still have me pinned."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Sorry!"

This dress is not made for scrambling to your feet in. Leia forgets that for exactly long enough to end up falling over - to the side at least, so she doesn't have the other girl pinned.

This plausibly falls under the heading of 'allowing them to roll over.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia takes the opportunity to get on top of the other girl she so nicely provided.

"That's better," she says. "So, what's your name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia has absolutely no reason to be nervous.

So she won't be. Simple.

"Leia Organa, Princess of Alderaan and aide to Senator Bail Organa," she says as haughtily as she can.

"...What's your name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dalia Palpatine, Imperial Princess. Nice to meet you, Leia."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her brain short circuits. That's the only excuse for what she says next.

" - I thought you were taller."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a rider on all the contracts for the holovid directors if they want to use my character. They have to make me look tall."

Permalink Mark Unread

She startles a bit, then snorts despite herself. "And hire only the prettiest actresses?"

She possibly shouldn't flirt with anyone from the evil family of evil, but also Leia's pretty sure that's the type of thing suave Rebel spies do, so, therefore...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Personally vetted and approved by me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You must keep busy, then."

(For Leia's entire childhood, it was illegal to show people defying the Empire as anything other than ugly buffoons (and you needed special permission and quite a lot of vetting to show even that much). And then, very shortly after she hit puberty, the codes were relaxed enough to allow plots where Imperial agents - many of them with a coincidental resemblance to an adult version of the Imperial Princess, and increasingly recently the character of the Princess herself - do things like investigate Rebel cells and subvert or capture very attractive Rebels. Still requiring permission and vetting, of course, but they're popular enough more directors are willing to go for it.)

(Leia is not the kind of girl who watches silly romance action flicks, but she'd been a bit desperate for any portrayal of people who could recognize the Empire as wrong.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's important work, you know. And I personally find it very... fulfilling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you who I have to thank for all those spy holos?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you a fan?" she asks excitedly. "Which ones're your favorites- I think Steyr's been doing some good work lately but of course Val Leka is practically a classic by now-"

Permalink Mark Unread

The enthusiasm is a little bit contagious, maybe.

She's got a lot of fondness for the classics, of course Val Leka was possibly her first ever media crush, but her current favorites really are Steyr's work - especially the holos that're more about political intrigue or seducing enemies than about madcap races to stop Evil Rebel Plots. Leia's not that much of an action fan, honestly. Even if Val Leka is very hot with a blaster in her hands

(...Is Dalia ever going to let her up. Leia isn't going to mention that because she's pretty sure this is a good angle to figure out who's on the Empire's censorship committees - which, all that type of stuff is obnoxiously hard to find out, even if it's not really classified - and she doesn't want to stop Dalia from rambling. Totally just for information gathering purposes.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia seems to only be making herself more comfortable on top of Leia over the course of her rambles. Which she's happy to continue more or less indefinitely. (She talks like she's in charge of the censorship committees herself. And refers to the other members by first name only.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Leia can get a lot with just a first name and a gender.)

She'd been coming back from a message delivery with no reply, so she's not exactly in a rush, but, her dad's going to be looking for her eventually... Also she's going to need to use the bathroom eventually.

Leia squirms a little bit a pretty good and honestly probably too long way into the conversation, then says, "Oh - sorry, just realized I need to comm the Senator to let him know that I've been held up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I can do that for you," she offers. "Alderaan office, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, yeah, that's right."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pulls out her comm and punches in the code. "This is Princess Palpatine. Is Senator Organa available?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, Your Highness," comes the crisp voice of one of the Senator's secretaries. "I'll patch you through now."

There's a moment of silence, then an older man's voice comes on the line. "Your Highness," he says, "How may I be of service?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Senator. I just wanted to let you know that I ran into your daughter in the hall," she winks at Leia, "and her return will be delayed by our conversation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for the update, Your Highness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome!" she chirps. "Don't worry, I'll keep her safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Your Highness. Though, it would set an old man's heart at ease if you returned her by dinner," he says, tone laced with a gentle humor. (Only Leia or his wife would be able to say if he's worried.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll see what I can do. For the sake of your old man's heart. Until then." She ends the call.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks," Leia says, in the tone of someone who has no idea if she's been done a favor or not.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome," Dalia says. She also tries out the 'predatory smile' her mom's been having her practice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She raises an eyebrow. "Will you let me up now?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Siiiiiiggggghhhhhh.

"If you insist."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmmm...

"I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia hops to her feet and offers Leia a hand up.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and takes Dalia's hand. She doesn't let go first.

And, regally: "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she's much better at 'regal' than 'predatory'.

"It is the obligation of the ruler to raise up the worthy among her subjects."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All subjects are worthy; a queen serves every last one of her people."

(Leia is physically incapable of keeping her mouth shut, sometimes. Only sometimes.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alas, I am only mortal, so I need to pick and choose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some forms of service are more efficient than others."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

"There's a lot of pretty girls in the galaxy, though. And if you focus too much on efficiency you lose the fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

- Wait when did the topic change -

Leia blushes. Just a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee.

"You're cute," Dalia informs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah - thank you." Her expression is a little bit stunned.

Manners, Leia, they exist. She can almost hear her aunt chiding her to compliment her peers in turn, but you shouldn't simply repeat their words -

"You're hot," she blurts out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm!" she agrees. "I'm glad you noticed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's very hard not to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. I've been practicing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like a useful skill to have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's what Mom said. Of course, I mostly enjoy it for its own sake."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ew Emperor Palpatine is not allowed to notice sexuality exists as a concept.

"You're talented at it. I mostly only manage cute, respectable, or regal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can give you tips if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "If it wouldn't be a burden."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all. There's lots of time before dinner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'd like tips."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then it's time for shopping!"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Shopping isn't usually my thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's fine, I'm buying. All you have to do is try stuff on."

She presses the button on her comm to page a handmaiden, non-urgent, and lets them know she needs transport.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the part I'm bad at!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good place to start with tips, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a dubious face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Trust me! It'll be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeeee! Yay!

She grabs Leia's hand. "Come on, the speeder's already being warmed up."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles despite herself. "Your staff are efficient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You either learn to be efficient quick or you don't last long in the Imperial household. Mom's a real stickler for that with the servants."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah."

That seems... Like yet another unpleasant thing here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come on, come on." She tugs Leia onward to the nearest bank of turbolifts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, I can't move quickly in this dress - "

She lets herself be tugged, though. At an (all too slow) pace that won't interfere with the obnoxiousness that is this year's court fashion in the bloc including Alderaan.

...Maybe she can convince the Imperial Princess of the fashionable value of clothes you could, say, theoretically get into a fight or tumble around in without any clothing-related mishaps. Though aligning herself with the Imperial family's bloc's fashion would be the obnoxious sort of thing people think is a statement.

Maybe Papa will let her do it anyways. Just in the interest of Leia having more protective clothes, given her profile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need me to carry you?" she asks while they wait for the lift.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be undignified," she says, primly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be fun, though. No one else is gonna be at the landing pad..."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hm.

"Only if you promise our first stop is for clothes I can move in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deal!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright then."

"Plan to just sweep me off my feet, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got it in one."

And Dalia scoops her up just as the lift arrives.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeep! (She does not shriek, but, well, she does make a small surprised noise and then starts giggling.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ehehe. She enters the lift and spins around so Leia can reach the panel.

"Hit five, three, then thirty-seven," she tells her passenger.

Permalink Mark Unread

That takes a small bit of adjusting her balance - she does so. "I haven't used this landing pad before."

Permalink Mark Unread

(There's a vague sense outside the inertial dampers that the lift is moving much more quickly than usual.)

"That's because it's my personal landing pad."

Permalink Mark Unread

(She should commit the code to memory, then...)

"A convenient thing to have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being the Imperial Princess has its perks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least a few."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

They arrive at the appropriate floor and the lift doors open, revealing that among the other perks of being an Imperial Princess is a shiny new model sporty airspeeder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's opinion on speeders is mostly that 'does it go the direction you're pointing it?' is the main important question. She doesn't look more than briefly at the airspeeder, evaluating it and finding it serviceable before her gaze goes to the rest of the platform in a quick scan - establishing to herself where they are in relation to the rest of the Senate building, mostly.

Permalink Mark Unread

(It's a cleverly tucked-away alcove that's not visible from most exterior angles.)

Dalia carries Leia over to the speeder and sets her gently down on her feet before opening the door for her. "Your Highness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Your Highness." She slides into the seat and buckles herself in.

Permalink Mark Unread

She skips around to the other side and hops in the driver's seat.

And then they're off. Dalia is a very fast driver. (If Leia is paying attention, she might notice they've picked up a couple discreet tails.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't mind the fast driving! (She's no longer allowed to drive herself places given she drives like this, too, just with notably less finesse.)

(She intentionally checks for her own tails, and spots some of Dalia's on that scan. Leia has the sneaking suspicion she's going to need to apologize to the Alderaanian delegation's security after dinner today. Suddenly needing to coordinate with the Imperial family's personal security sounds like it's rarely fun.)

(...Dalia's probably going to keep talking to Leia for a while. Leia should arrange a bonus for her security staff, maybe run another round of hiring by her father...)

She tries not to laugh too much while Dalia's driving, though - there's efficient (which is what Leia's driving is, dad), and then there's reckless, and she doesn't want to encourage too much of the latter. Really, she doesn't.

"Where are we going first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Madam Jessin's, it's this boutique off CoreStar Plaza. They mostly do off-the-rack, but they've got the best selection when you're trying to put a new look together, then you can go other places to get the tailored stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stuff that's easy to move in almost never needs to be fitted, anyways," she says with a shrug. Then she pauses. "Unless you're trying to add a hidden holster or something, sometimes..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or a sheathe for a knife."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a bit easier to hide under a loose skirt, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or," she holds up her arm and twists her wrist in a certain way-

And a slender stiletto pops out of her jacket sleeve and into her hand. "Ta-da!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a very interested noise. "Clever," she says, then gestures to her own bare arms. "Unfortunately..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you want to look at tops with sleeves first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And bottoms with good legs." Her gaze flicks down Dalia's body.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, she can make innuendos too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No idea what you're talking about," she says with a smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I have more education to do, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"On how Princesses speak in the Imperial Palace?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"On the explication of your implications."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And what would that teaching look like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... First I'd take you out somewhere we can spend time talking in private, maybe something that expands your horizons a bit. Buy you something pretty to keep me in your mind. Invite you to something else, maybe a social function, deepen our connection... Then take you back to my rooms."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"Well," she says musingly, trying to play it cool, "You'll need to convince me at each step that the next will be worth my time..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's true. But each step builds on the one before it, so it's not like I'm starting from scratch each time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The threshold gets much higher, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's what you think from down here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we shall."

She tucks the speeder into a neat landing, and goes to open Leia's door.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets out, looking around.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's one of the busier areas of Coruscant, close enough to the palace and high enough that it's also populated by the respectable class of criminals, the ones that mug you from behind a desk with a notarized affidavit rather than in a back alley with a stained vibroblade.

Dalia escorts Leia to their target store with a broad smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

(She likes the ones with blades better, honestly. No one gets annoyed if she shoots them.)

She glances in the windows, and: "It does look like they have a lot of athletic clothes..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Leia." Dalia has a very serious face on. "We're here to make you look hot, not just find something you can move in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Finding me something I can move, hide a blaster, and look hot in might impress me, though," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's more to life than High Core dresses and sportswear!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That I can also wear to work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends how conservative your father is about his daughter's attire."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need to match the rest of the delegation, but be subtly set apart as the heir of Alderaan and my father's likely successor, without seeming too young or desperate for attention."

"And the delegation's style is very closely dictated by the current fashion, following or intentionally subverting it as appropriate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can work with that," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I look forward to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then into the shop.

Dalia cracks her knuckles and gets to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's much easier to find casual clothes that fit Leia's requirements, of course - but she carries herself well, and it'd be difficult to make her anything other than hot.

She seems to have a bit of a disdain for showing skin, though, gravitating towards looser, more covering outfits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Showing skin and tight clothes are hot, though.

That's okay, Dalia will rise to the challenge. Maybe they can accessorize. Belts, hats, scarves..

Permalink Mark Unread

No hats. Her hair is an Alderaanian royal woman's pride; it'd be shameful to cover it like that.

She can be convinced on belts and scarves, though (and she has very many opinions on hair accessories that highlight but do not hide her hair).

Permalink Mark Unread

No hats, then. But there's hair sticks and pins and barrettes and chains- They'll have to visit a secondary shop. This calls for a specialist purveyor.

Permalink Mark Unread

The best accessories do - and Leia can give Dalia some help with her hair, even. Repay the favor.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can get matching designs!!

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll have to pick clothes that are in harmony, then - your hair is part of you, and is integral to your entire presentation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no, that means more shopping they will definitely have to abort the whole endeavor haha just kidding Dalia already knows how to match the rest of their outfits.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia doesn't seem the kind to mind more shopping, anyways.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fun! Leia's having at least a little bit of fun, too, she can tell.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe more than a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. Then, with a smirk (trying very hard to cover up her nerves): "You know... There's a lot of social occasions where it'd be very rude for me to not wear gifts you've given me, even if they'd be otherwise not part of the professional dress code... Especially if I was there by your invitation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's my seventeenth birthday next week," she says slyly. "I'm having a party. Do you want to come?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Oh!"

That's not a bad 'oh,' but: "Ah, Empire Day, right? - That's my birthday, too, though I was just going to have a nice breakfast with my dad and a holocall with my mom - "

"But I'd love to come, especially if the timing works out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's an evening party. Evening and night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "My assistants might not find having only a week to put together an imperial birthday gift very perfect, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell them I said you wearing the outfit I picked for you would be gift enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be a matter of professional pride to go beyond that, I bet, since it's a minimum expectation. Though, if there's something I can give you personally..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She could strip out of the outfit Dalia picked.

"How about a kiss?" she suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Shiver.)

"A fairy-tale sort of gift," she teases, to try to disguise the way her heartbeat is fluttering.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You only get to invite another princess to your seventeenth birthday once."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd have thought you could have every princess in the galaxy at your parties if you wanted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But then I'd be too busy kissing them all to do anything else."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Besides, I think it's better to personally vet all the princesses one is going to invite to their parties. There are some real boors out there, a girl's gotta be careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad I met your standards, then," she says, tone dry.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should be! They're very exacting and high quality. Definitely an accurate assessment of a princess's worth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah-huh." She doesn't sound entirely convinced.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, if you'd like corroboration immediately, we can skip waiting for the party and go back to my rooms now for the complete multi-point inspection."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be a better birthday gift if it's a first kiss, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out.

"I won't tell if you don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

"An impressive first kiss is what I want for my birthday, though, and I expect punctuality there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we make it a sleepover the night before then? Stay up til midnight together?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "As long as you don't mind me ducking out to meet my dad for breakfast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's lots of time between midnight and breakfast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Several hours, even."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then it's a date?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shouldn't agree to dating the Imperial Princess just like that -

"It is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeeee.

"You're cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So're you. That's an important point on the princess grading scale, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are the major points?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That," she says, "would be telling."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't get to know how I'm being graded, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you did, you might try to game the system. Can't have that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't that just be self improvement?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A balanced and healthy arc of personal growth without regard for her stature is also an important princess metric," Dalia says virtuously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And how am I supposed to grow if I don't know my goals?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You set them for yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin. "Something I'm also good at."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're multi-talented."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've worked hard for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can tell."

"Do you wanna go out somewhere else between now and the sleepover?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about a movie?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only if it's something exciting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like an advance screening of Star Princess 2?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Luckily, that is entirely within my power to arrange."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What day, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Day after tomorrow, let's say."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "The evening works for me, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great! I'll send a note with more details when I have them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bright grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

On to finish up shopping, then? (Dinnertime is approaching...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. There's just a few last pieces to pick up, and then she'll take Leia back to the Senate Tower.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Today's been a lot of fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad you ran into me, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You stole my line," she teases. "I was going to say I'm glad I ran into you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's better that I said it first. Gives you the tacit forgiveness and all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Less of the arrogance, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Arrogance is best as a sometimes trait."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I only apply it appropriately and proportionately, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

"So far!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure it's a pattern I'll keep up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be keeping a close watch to see that you do, Princess Leia."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't expect anything less, Princess Dalia."

Permalink Mark Unread

And back to the Senate?

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to the Senate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shall Dalia escort her all the way back to her father's offices?

Permalink Mark Unread

If she'd be so kind...

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she need to be carried?

Dalia can offer her arm instead if that's too undignified.

Permalink Mark Unread

A bit undignified. But Leia takes Dalia's arm happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she takes her back to the Alderaanian offices.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll see you later, Princess Dalia," she says once they arrive. "Thank you again for today."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was my sincere pleasure, Princess Leia. I do look forward to our next meeting." She takes Leia's hand and kisses it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She bows - appropriate for the pants Dalia got her into. "I as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Until then, farewell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Farewell."

And she steps into Alderaan's offices.

(She... Maybe has some explaining to do to her father...)

Permalink Mark Unread

And Dalia heads back to the palace.

She'll have a good story tonight if her mother shows up to dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

She often does, and tonight is no exception.

"Did you have an interesting day, dear?" she asks, like she doesn't already know the answer.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I ran into the Alderaanian senator's daughter. Or, well, she ran into me, but I ended up on top."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You always do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We went out shopping and I invited her to my birthday party. And a sleepover the day before and a movie in two days."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "What's your impression of her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She likes my spy movies. But I think she'd rather be the antagonist than the protagonists."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not too surprising."

"Her parents have been investigated several times for potential rebel connections - though nothing has ever come of it, and they feign a reserved patriotism well enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow it is just like her spy movies.

"So this is a good chance for us to find out what's really going on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps."

"I'm more concerned about leverage, here - I have enough that I would have already moved against someone with less ability to be... Obnoxious, let's say, if their peers object to their treatment. I need either enough to obviate those rather inevitable complaints, or for Alderaan to return more fully to the fold."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Getting their princess into my power would be pretty good leverage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All the moreso with their heir." She sips her tea. "Leia seems favored to replace her father in the Senate, soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll be here on Coruscant a lot, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Perhaps even more often than he is, at least until she's ready for the seat. Perhaps less often, if he doesn't yet trust her out of his influence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll argue to stay if her father wants to take her back. She's got ambition."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of what sort?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'd take your job, if she could."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All of it? Or merely the idea of what she sees?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think she has the, um, reach for the full package."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some people might surprise you."

"But very, very few can reach the heights I have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's because you're the best."

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft smirk. "That's been seen in a millinneum at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And it'll be another millennium before someone could match you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "You're quite the flatterer, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been practicing," she grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

"On senators' daughters?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Among others."

Servants, courtiers, courtier's children her own age, an actress or two from her movies...

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's important to practice in a variety of circumstances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm very diligent about looking for opportunities!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've learned well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As expected of my daughter."

Then she turns the conversation to getting more details on Leia and Dalia's encounter with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia was observing, behind all the fun, and she knows what details her mother wants to hear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've done well, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

She steers the conversation on again, to Dalia's recent classes, to her homework and studying, and to her birthday, if the guest list has any other changes, what she's excited about... Hints she'll be getting Dalia a very interesting gift.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, a tantalizing mystery.

Permalink Mark Unread

Part of the gift. Dalia's mother knows how much she enjoys the anticipation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, it sounds like she has an exciting few days ahead... Perhaps her mother should leave her to it, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay! She's got some arrangement to make.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have fun, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I always do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dinner wraps up after, as two of Dalia's mothers handmaidens coming to take away the food and dishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Dalia retires to set up the private screening, send an invitation to Leia, make some changes to her birthday plans, send that invitation to Leia...

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia sends back her acceptance of the invitations very promptly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good. Then she can consider today to be a job well done.

She has other princess matters to occupy herself with until the evening after next and her date with Leia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia keeps busy, too.

And she's right on time to be picked up by Dalia from her father's apartment. She's dressed in loose slacks and a tough-looking jacket over a tank top; worlds away from her clothing as a senatorial aide.

She waves as Dalia pulls up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey cutie. Need a lift?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're offering, lovely."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pops the door.

"Hop in."

Permalink Mark Unread

She slides in beside Dalia. "Where you heading?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Somewhere exciting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My kind of place, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the hope."

And they're off. Dalia's rented out small, fancy holotheater, the type that usually shows independent films and old classics. The attached cafe is also doing catering for them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't go out to the theater often..." Leia says, looking around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This isn't quite the typical experience. Unless you're me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am a princess," she says, teasingly. "I could get a private screening on Alderaan pretty easily."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wink. "You're pretty close to being me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's still some distance, though."

Like whether their family is evil.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The gap's closing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Cause I'm introducing you to my world!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to get a snack before the movie starts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia suggests a double-size milkshake. With two straws. To share.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course. It's only economical. They can share their other snacks, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds like a plan!

Permalink Mark Unread

Chocolate coated raisins seem essential...

And they'll have to decide how to share the snacks - they could put them in the seat between them, but then they won't be sitting next to each other...

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the perks of taking over the theater is that you can tell them to put whatever sort of furniture arrangement you want in. This isn't an amphitheater-type screen anyway, so they can have two chairs next to each other and a low table in front for their snacks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, then - though Leia prefers more of a couch setup.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can do a couch too!

Permalink Mark Unread

So long as Dalia's joining Leia on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She absolutely will.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Leia sits herself with her back to one side of the couch, first, and puts her feet up on the seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia puts her share of the snacks on the table, then plops down and nestles herself in the curve of Leia's body.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, wrapping an arm around Dalia. "Hello, cutie."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi there."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans her cheek on Dalia's head. "You're cozy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle. "That's the goal."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "You're good at reaching your goals, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

And: movie?

Permalink Mark Unread

Movie! Star Princess 2 absolutely lives up the hype of its predecessor. The fights are fightier, the plot plottier, the romantic scenes steamier.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's absolutely captivated! Especially at the climatic infiltration scene, which rather masterfully ratchets up the narrative tension.

Permalink Mark Unread

And at the end, of course, the Princess claims back her ancestral treasure thus securing her right to rule, and her love interest (who had secretly helped to steal the treasure because she thought the Princess would be happier without the burden of rulership) sees the light and agrees to rule the galaxy at her side.

Permalink Mark Unread

A fun romp. Even if the ending is a bit predictable.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love a happy ending."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno. Getting on a ship and running away from it all has a certain appeal..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it was with you, I might consider it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "With you - yeah, I'd be so tempted." And not just because removing the Imperial Princess from the game board might be helpful.

Then she sighs. "I wouldn't be able to stay away from it all, though. Knowing me, I'd go riding off into the sunset and then turn around two days later for the sequel."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "A good character to have in a franchise, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keep people on their toes about if this is actually the last installment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though eventually you'll stop having suspense and just have a running joke of opening the next holo with our eternally hardworking princess turning her ship around after hearing about the latest nonsense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might have to kill the series before it gets to that point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But then how else would you have a plot where her girlfriend runs around intercepting every single possible distraction?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Genre swap to a comedy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keep the franchise fresh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully that won't alienate the fanbase."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might draw in new fans."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Of course, it might have trouble getting past the censorship committees..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If the script's good enough..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An advantage to being on the committee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little bit of favoritism is like oil in the bureaucratic machine."

Permalink Mark Unread

Noncommittal hum.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't agree?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on who's being favored, for what, and why."

"If the position needs trust - then you want to appoint people you can trust. If it needs someone who will cooperate with you and the rest of the system - then you want to appoint people you can work with. If the position needs competence - then you want to appoint competent people, even if you don't like them personally."

"You shouldn't give people important roles only because you like them, or only to repay them for some past help that doesn't reflect on their ability to do the job. Pure favoritism introduces friction, because you risk adding poorly fitted parts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did say a little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exercising your good judgement about which people are excellent isn't favoritism, either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, sure." She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

She snorts.

"And movies are inherently judgement calls anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So basically what you're saying is that sometimes it's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She elbows Dalia, snickering.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia... Really can't wait for their sleepover.

(She's regretting saying she won't kiss Dalia until their birthdays a little bit. Not enough to back down, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope you had fun today."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like spending time with you. You have good thoughts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I enjoy sharing them, so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to do this again sometime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Beyond the sleepover, even."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah!!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

"Will you come pick me up for that, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you'd rather have it at my place, absolutely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd rather not have Papa in the next room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's probably a good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Better for everyone's sanity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, not being able to hear us might cause its own kind of worry..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a face. "I'd rather he not think about it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "It's too late for that, trust me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... Hopefully he's trying not to think about - " she waves her hand, "Private stuff, just politics." Sigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Burdens of being a princess. Everyone's always watching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully not in my bedroom, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Usually not," she grants.

Permalink Mark Unread

She eyes Dalia.

"On the other hand, our apartment does have very thick walls. Papa wouldn't hear anything. And then I could treat you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose I'll leave the choice of where up to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "My apartment, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll make me meeting my parents for breakfast easier, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we can stay up late without fear of missing that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you could sleep in without missing me leaving."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia sticks her tongue out at Leia. "I can rise with the sun! Sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You shouldn't have to get up early on your birthday, though. Unless you're secretly a morning person."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squint.

"Are you secretly a morning person?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That assumes I sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, so that's how it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My sleep schedule," she says, primly, "Is entirely reasonable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does it exist? At all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It definitely exists!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As like, a pencil smudge on the calendar, once a month or so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're being very rude," she says, "Interrogating a lady about her sleep habits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Curiosity is my besetting sin, alas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never would have guessed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know! Most people would say something like 'pride' or 'lust' if I asked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lust seems like it could be part of curiosity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bit, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though it's a multifaceted problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I don't consider it a problem at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Another reason it wouldn't be a besetting sin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm."

"Uh, what were we talking about before?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sleepover arrangements."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, right. You're taking me to meet your parents before our first kiss. How traditionalist of you, Princess Leia."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alderaan is exceptionally proud of our traditions and culture."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try to be appropriately respectful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're also proud of our tradition of open and honest debate, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good tradition. Makes respecting much easier."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Especially for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did they invent it just for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope," she says with a grin, "But I might have helped keep it from fading."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's very princessly of you. Preserving your people's culture."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An important duty I'm proud to carry out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Past and future generations salute your hard work," Dalia says seriously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The knowledge of a job well done is worth it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins.

"Want me to come pick you up that night?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought you weren't allowed to drive," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out at Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"From traditionalist to lawless in the blink of an eye! What has become of our sweet princess?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a complicated woman."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I see. Well, if you can pick me up, that would be lovely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll see what I can do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle! "Yay!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Going to take me back home now, cutie?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you insist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do." And teasingly: "I can't pick you up later if you never drop me off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a really good point. Okay, let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Onward, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back home for Leia.

"See you later!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you."

She waves as Dalia drives off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia waves back for perhaps longer than is strictly safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia tries not to look too amused about that.

(But she likes Dalia, a lot.)

(Probably too much.)

She messages Dalia that night, with a link to a fanfiction she found, shipping Val Leka's character with one of Steyr's character's more bad-girl loves from a past installment (who redeemed herself by sacrificing her life for the Empire, of course; the story is giving her a happy ending. In multiple senses of the word.) It's very politically correct, too; the site's in full and strict compliance with the censorship committee. (Leia knows she's going to need to work her way up to challenging certain views.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's reply is excited keyboard mashing and stream-of-consciousness reactions to the fic.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sends back a growing assortment of heart emojis.

Permalink Mark Unread

!! <3 <3 <333!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

<3333!!!!

She sends her own comments and impressions and thoughts, then. Elaborations on what she thinks this or that part means, what she thinks is being hinted at here...

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmm yes there's definitely a deep well of literary analysis and character work to be drawn on here. And then the plotty bits, even.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the best things about fanfiction.

Permalink Mark Unread

During a brief lull in the conversation, Dalia sends Leia a link to her favorite fanfiction. It's almost entirely smut, but surprisingly well-written.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she sends her own live commentary back. (She reads very quickly.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent! Dalia is only maybe fishing for what kinks Leia seems most interested in.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's a bit teasing about revealing those, and - well, Dalia's going to have trouble getting a very good look tonight.

But Leia sends her another story the next evening, and the one after that...

(Danger. Danger and high stakes and big emotions, wild freedom, something like revenge, something like seduction...)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Sounds like there's some roleplay in their future.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Remains to be seen.)

Leia talks to Dalia every single night - and then shows up early to get her the night of the sleepover.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eager to see me, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only a little bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

"I just need to pack a few more things, if you can wait a minute." Such as her lacy undergarments.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just don't take too long."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gonna run off to our sleepover without me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I'll find some other pretty girl to keep me company."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gasp! "Nooo, I'll be quick!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be waiting." She leans back in her seat, smugly. "For a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

She rushes through gathering her things and is back in four minutes and forty-eight seconds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's still there!

"I'd almost given up hope," she teases, opening the passenger side door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as I'm alive, hope remains," she grins, not even breathing particularly hard.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep that in mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tosses her bag in the back and takes a seat, bouncing a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she drives off.

She's somehow worse than Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia is a very good driver, thank you very much.

It makes for an exciting ride, though!

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's apparently having fun cursing back at anyone who yells at them, too, even if they're only briefly passing each other. (Which is always, at these speeds.)

She gets them to her apartment's garage without causing a single wreck, though, and she hops out to offer Dalia a hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it. "Thank you, angry princess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome, pretty princess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. She grabs her bag and hefts it. "So where to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elevator's this way..." She locks her speeder and offers to take Dalia's bag for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She accepts graciously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Up to her apartment then, where Leia's father greets them at the door with his usual veneer of polite friendliness. (Leia is trying not to look nervous.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Senator," she greets him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good evening, your Imperial Highness," he says with an extremely precise bow, welcoming them in and showing them the receiving room. Then, tone a bit more jovial than formal: "Did you have a pleasant drive here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was enjoyable. Your daughter has a remarkably direct style in all her endeavors."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles, his gaze softening as it lands on Leia. "She's always been the sort to give her all, in everything she does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I quite like that about her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

Permalink Mark Unread

Chuckle.

"Have you had dinner yet, your Highness?" he asks Dalia, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call me Dalia. I have not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, Dalia. I'll have something prepared shortly." Smile. "I can let you know when dinner's ready, if you and Leia want to settle in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be wonderful, Bail. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're quite welcome, Princess Dalia." And he bows again.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Leia shows Dalia to Leia's own set of rooms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm, not bad, not bad.

"Nice bed," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Blush!

"Ah."

"I mean. I don't use it that much anyways..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a real shame, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Such blush.

"Well, this is a sleepover..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you're saying you want to try it out tonight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush! But she tries to recover, arches a brow imperiously. "Who says I'd be sharing, if I did?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did. Do you not want to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Haughtily: "Do you think you can convince me?"

(Her blush is somewhat ruining the cool effect.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you want to be convinced."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What makes you think that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The way you haven't changed the subject, despite all your blushing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't mean I'll make things easy on you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Maybe, maybe not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll have to try and find out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Challenge accepted."

Permalink Mark Unread

She crosses her arms and raises her eyebrow, a silent, I'm waiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it had better wait until after dinner, though. I wouldn't want to be interrupted."

Permalink Mark Unread

A giggle breaks through her serious demeanor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though perhaps a sneak preview... if I might see my bag a moment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright." She hands it over.

Permalink Mark Unread

She rummages through a moment- then pulls out a silky black negligee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her eyes go very wide, and she swallows a few times.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin!

"So yeah. After dinner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." Brain reboot. "You might need the extra time, after all," she teases.

She is not doing very well at playing it cool, is she.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be a help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Give you time to get going properly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really get into the show."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're taking up acting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a performance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's the difference?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have to be acting to express the truest, deepest depths of my heart."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aww. "Lots of people wear masks," she comments, off handed almost. "Even in this sort of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not how I do things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wear your heart on your sleeve?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or just kinda wrapped around my arm. I might not be wearing sleeves."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

(She wants to just laugh, but.)

"It's - dangerous for most people. Being honest like that."

((Dangerous for Leia.))

((((What she feels is so deeply buried, bound so tightly to her bones, even she doesn't know all of it. Probably not even most of it.))))

(((Dalia's cute. Leia never thinks about whether that means Leia likes her, not where her conscience mind can notice. Liking people is dangerous, too.)))

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's princess privilege, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Her answering smile looks amused. Her emotions in the Force are as flat as ever - not unusual for a total Force null, especially with how preliminary Dalia's training still is - and echo the same quiet amusement as what's on her face, washing through the faint unease Dalia would expect from someone with sympathy for but no actual commitment to the Rebellion. Everything about her is perfectly congruent.)

((But something seems off, even if Dalia has no idea how.))

"I suppose it is," she says, tone light.

((((Her true anger is born in her bones, deeper in her than her heart can hold, and her bones protect it.))))

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want princess privilege?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is the duty of every subject of the Empire to be fully honest, regardless." Light shrug. "And it is the prerogative of the Imperial family to say what is acceptable to think. And I don't want that power." Her expression is even, her tone formal.

(Her emotions are a lukewarm sort of neutral. Not sycophantic, but not in open rejection. Resigned, perhaps, and quietly so. Truthful all the same.)

((There's something frigid in the room. In the Force, maybe.))

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that killed the mood. Whoops.

"I'm not trying to trap you, Leia."

Permalink Mark Unread

((Sure she's not.))

Leia just... Shrugs. "Didn't think you were."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awkwaaaard.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Sigh.

"Do you want to unpack any before dinner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You're still okay with me staying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean - nothing's changed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs and then sighs again. (It feels more honest, though.)

"It's... I know you're the Imperial Princess. There'll be topics that are... Awkward, no matter what."

((Leia doesn't entirely succeed at suppressing the for now that echoes loudly through her soul.))

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do like you. As a person. Separate from- everything else."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwww.

"I like you, too." And, softly, "As a person, separate from everything else."

((...That's true. (Leia doesn't really want it to be entirely true, but it is.)))

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh cool. Maybe her entire life isn't over after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.

Then: "Being honest with you sounds - pleasant." There's something very open, very briefly, in her face and posture that says, 'If we lived in a galaxy where it was safe,' before she closes off again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'll show you my heart later, and- you can reciprocate if you feel like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see what fits the mood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes Dalia's hand and squeezes it.

"So, unpacking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Unpacking.

Turns out Dalia brought as many as several lacy underthings. Enough for both of them to wear some at the same time. She does know Leia's sizes, after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's successfully gotten them back to things being awkward because of how much Leia's blushing, if nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's a much better flavor of awkward. In Dalia's opinion.

Permalink Mark Unread

In Leia's too. (Even if she plays at indifference or haughtiness.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And Leia's father lets them know dinner is ready shortly after.

Permalink Mark Unread

Great.

Dalia is a perfectly polite houseguest, asking conversational but not prying questions of Bail.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's a perfectly polite host! He's very good at the rhythm of this sort of thing, keeping the conversation flowing without touching on anything sensitive or any opinions about significant matters.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's in perfect tune with him, there.

(It'd probably have been less obvious how scripted this all feels before Leia and Dalia's conversation earlier.)

Permalink Mark Unread

It's still a fine conversation. Dalia can deal.

And after the girls can retreat back to Leia's room.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't relax right away.

But she does take out some equipment from under her bed and start checking for bugs.

"Do you have anything on you you want to keep in the room?" she asks, idly, with a gesture to her scanner that makes it clear she means listening devices and the like.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only my brain," she chirps.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.

Then: "Mind if I scan you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She poses with a hand on her hip.

"Go right ahead, Princess."

Permalink Mark Unread

She runs the wand very carefully over Dalia, then: "You're clean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clean in body, dirty in mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

Laugh. "The best combination."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug smug. "Yep."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

"And, now that we're alone... I think you said something about showing me your heart."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll need to change in private first. For the full effect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright..."

There's options. Leia has her own home office and a closet nearly the size of her bedroom, as well as her own private bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bathroom works.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia sits on her bed to wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soon enough, Dalia reemerges- still fully clothed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought you were going to change?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have to look beyond the surface, dear princess. Patience."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans back, raising a regal eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

She flounces over to her datapad and clicks on a soft, sultry song.

Then Dalia starts dancing. Her limbs sway hypnotically with fluid, graceful movements. Slowly, very slowly, she begins removing her clothes as part of the dance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh wow.

Leia stares, enraptured despite herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she gets to the bottom layer, she starts to approach Leia.

"Well, Princess," she purrs. "How do you like it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She has to swallow before she can answer. "You're hot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

She licks her lips. "You dance well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I practice," she says proudly.

"Do you know any dances?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A few kinds of ballroom dance, and some traditional Alderaanian folk dances."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have room to expand your repertoire, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've certainly never done anything like this..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can teach you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She extends a hand to help Leia stand.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it with a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

She spins Leia around and pulls her in close.

"The first step is to get you used to the movements," she says, arms wrapping around Leia's waist.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where should I put my hands?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wherever you like, for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts them on Dalia's shoulders.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

"Now, lean into me and follow my movements." She starts moving her hips in circles.

Permalink Mark Unread

She presses in, picking up Dalia's rhythm quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can add a little bit of footwork.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's got a good sense for that - especially following Dalia's lead. She's grinning, keeping up with every step.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dancing for a pretty girl is fun. Dancing with a pretty girl is even better.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia likes doing more than watching, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anything more challenging with this dance?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, the next part is working taking off your clothes into the dance..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Considering hum.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I brought some fancy pieces for you too, if you wanted..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww." She pouts playfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "I'm very shy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't think you were the type."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be in some places."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose a little variety in your character is good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Always something surprising to discover about me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's entertaining in its own way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good. I'd hate to bore you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could never."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure I could find things to do that'll leave you bored, if I try hard enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as I can see you, it'd be more difficult than you think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Relish the thought of watching me fill out spreadsheets?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Deft movements of the fingers, a wrinkled brow of intense concentration, glimpses of the piercing intelligence beneath flashing through in moments of brilliance..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the knowledge you'll be my reward for finishing my work early."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm definitely worth doing your best for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A major boon to my productivity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Benefits for everyone!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely something to try, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not tonight, though. I bet we can think of better ways to spend the evening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're both creative sorts, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even when working under restrictions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's where creativity really blooms."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I've heard!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and leans against Dalia a bit. "Anything else I can learn about dancing, even with my clothes on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's some other club dances besides the striptease."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead on, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll do so happily! Though first she has to switch the music.

Then dancing!

Permalink Mark Unread

Dancing into the night with a pretty girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not a bad way to spend the pre-birthday hours.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

And sooner than they know it, midnight rolls around.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia starts getting a nervous little flutter in her chest as she notices the time creeping forward -

And then the clock strikes midnight, and she leans over, and cups Dalia's cheek like she's seen in the movies, and kisses her.

Permalink Mark Unread

What initiative!

Dalia kisses back enthusiastically.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has no real idea what she's doing (though she looked up guides), but she's very enthusiastic in return.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she pays attention, Dalia can show her a trick or two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Paying attention is one thing Leia excels at.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a quick study," Dalia giggles when they pull apart, ten or twenty eternities later.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a good teacher," she says, once she has her breath back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've done lots of practice."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Good that one of us has."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Learning together is fun too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll find new things to learn, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll have to dig deeper than just kissing for that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "How deep?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "At least beneath the shirt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be surprised if you've never gone there before..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's an expansive territory. There's lots to cover."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't know..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna find out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"Yeah, I would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Works a little better if we go sit somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

On her bed?

Permalink Mark Unread

That will do nicely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Many kisses. And some encouraging wiggles of the body.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia starts running her hands over Dalia's body, giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia makes encouraging noises for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia is very successfully encouraged.

Permalink Mark Unread

This prompts more wiggles and moans, so with any luck this will turn into a virtuous circle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems to be!

Leia isn't taking off any of Dalia's underwear or stripping herself, but the presence of clothes is increasingly getting into the realm of just providing plausible deniability but no real barrier.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I touch you back, princess?" she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Regal hum.

"You may, Your Highness."

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very excellent; it's Leia's turn to encouragingly wiggle, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia likes the wiggles very much. And she doesn't have to stop wiggling herself, either.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's extra fun once they're both getting going, there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's definitely going to be sleepy at breakfast in the morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's pulled all nighters before; she'll be fine. And she can nap over lunch if she's really tired.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia won't feel guilty, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd never need to feel guilty for showing Leia this much of a good time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good to know.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle kiss!

...Leia is going to be both tired and grinning like a loon at breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's only slightly smug about having that effect on her.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Smug' is a very good look on Dalia. She should, possibly, consider being even more smug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she can try.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia has faith in her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she absolutely can't fail.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good; Leia strives to be inspiring.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chalk up one success on that front.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

(She might also be late for breakfast at this rate.)

Permalink Mark Unread

That's entirely up to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's going to try hard to manage.

"Do you want to join us? Or I can bring you breakfast later, once you're more awake..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can go spend some time with your family. I'll be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

She wakes up on time the next morning - though barely - and makes it to breakfast with only some yawning.

She's back in the room by the time Dalia wakes up, reading something.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was a fast breakfast," she yawns.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You slept in," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, I didn't mean to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry. You were much too cute to wake up."

Permalink Mark Unread

Streeeetch.

"It'll help me stay up late tonight too, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her body chooses that moment to make her yawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you should take a nap, though," she giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to." Yawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stubbornness on a trivial issue loses you princess points."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "It is, of course, proper to make sure I'm rested, I suppose." She flops dramatically.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can cuddle for a bit if that makes it easier for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come back to bed, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and does as commanded.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggletime.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Leia drifts off to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's cute when she sleeps. Dalia didn't really get a chance to properly appreciate this last night.

She can spare a couple hours here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her nap's not the entire day, at least.

She wakes up a bit groggily, once she does wake.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning, sunshine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it still morning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Barely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't lose too much time, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just enough rest to keep you sharp."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As much as I need."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

"I do need to get back to the palace soon-ish, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

"I can drive you over once I'm dressed, or Papa's security could drive you..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've gotta get dressed too, so might as well wait for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"Have you eaten yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I haven't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's get some food in you then, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd fallen asleep in her house clothes, so she just needs to brush her hair and smooth out some wrinkles before she's ready to take Dalia to the dining room. It's more or less lunchtime for Leia, fortunately, though with her nap she ends up asking the servants for a small, light meal.

"I'm excited for the party tonight," she tells Dalia as they're sitting down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's gonna be lots of fun. Practically everyone will be there- Even some of my movie friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be sure to wear my best, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Make sure to bring your dancing shoes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And my dancing clothes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those can be optional," she giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles, too. "I'll keep them on anyways, for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Foiled again!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Patience is a princessly virtue."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll wait until I can try again, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.

"Wanna help me pick out my outfit? Or should I just surprise you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Surprise me," she decides.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will do, Your Highness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looking forward to it, princess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

And back to Dalia's apartments?

Permalink Mark Unread

Back home for her.

And she'll start checking up on the preparations for tonight...

Permalink Mark Unread

Relatedly:

She has a message on her private comm, asking if she still plans to meet with her other mom tonight.

Permalink Mark Unread
Dalia's gonna try, as long as the party doesn't run late.

u'd be welcome to come to that too, u kno
Permalink Mark Unread

Your friends might not be very impressed by my presence.

Her text somehow sounds exceptionally dryly sarcastic and also self-hating. Impressive how she does that.

Permalink Mark Unread
ur very impressive

ill just get them drunker
Permalink Mark Unread

There's a long pause before the next message.

I would prefer to meet with you alone, but if your party runs long - I value spending time with you.

Permalink Mark Unread
That's the closest she's ever gotten to a yes!

itll def be super fun i promise!!

u kno if u decide to show no pressure ill still try to get free
Permalink Mark Unread

Thank you.

I hope you have fun.

Permalink Mark Unread
i will! <3
Permalink Mark Unread

Very long pause, then:

<3

It's amazing how utterly awkward a simple symbol can look.

Permalink Mark Unread

The awkwardness totally doesn't translate. Dalia's just happy her mom's responding.

Permalink Mark Unread

I will see you this evening, Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread
okay see u then
Permalink Mark Unread

And the time her party's set to start approaches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Party time!

She goes down to greet her guests. Things will start in the Grand Foyer, social mingling and aperitifs, then to the dining room for the formal dinner.

Then she can kick loose of all the political fuddyduddys and take all the actual fun guests to the ballroom she's had turned into a danceclub for the night.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia appears in a dress-like formal coat, which wraps around her beautifully and falls in shimmering white folds to the floor. Her hair's in an extremely complicated braid, piled high on her head and secured by golden hairsticks with little gemstone flame charms, golden meshwork and filigree flames decorating the braids themselves.

She's carrying herself more regally than Dalia's ever seen - and she must be wearing heels and pretty tall ones at that, going by her current height, but she glides like she's floating. Even many of the models Dalia's invited can't move that elegantly, in or out of heels.

She's one of the first to arrive, and does very well with the social mingling. She's definitely good at political mingling, though Dalia gets the sense she's occasionally restraining herself from punching someone. (She also insults a lot of people. None of them notice while she's in front of them. Most don't realize it even after she walks off, but - it's clear many of the people hovering around those Leia dislikes noticed the barbs.) She takes up an exactly politically appropriate amount of Dalia's time, given her station relative to Dalia's other guests - though she's open about her fondness and closeness.

She ducks into the coat room as they're going to the ballroom - and emerges a minute or so later sans coat, revealing a deep, ruby red blouse and black tights. The blouse hugs her body where her coat had fallen away from her in graceful waves. It's one of the ones Dalia picked out for her - a high collar with a teardrop cutout over her sternum, a darker half-cape affixed to the collar with golden chains. The fabric shimmers in the dance hall lights. It's gathered in at her waist with a braided golden chain that echoes her hairpiece, with similar gemstone flames along it. The blouse is just about long enough to be a minidress, though the slits up the side would make wearing nothing under a bit indecent (and are tied to each other by threads that look gold but are actually a very expensive sort of elastic so they stretch as she moves). The tights are thick and stretchy enough to double as exercise pants, but, well, they're certainly not hiding Leia's figure. They're decorated with golden thread, which blends into Leia's stiletto heels - which are a shiny black with gold straps winding up her calves. She's wearing matching jewelry on the same gold, black, and ruby flames theme - small earrings, a pendant that hangs into the teardrop on her blouse, bracelets that wrap around her forearm, echoing her heels, small glimpses of golden chains on her shoulders whenever her blouse shifts just so.

(The jewelry, hairpiece, and belt are new, and she's had modifications done to the blouse - altered the fit, and many of the fasteners have changed.)

And she glides up to Dalia, a smirk on her lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well hello there, princess. You're looking exceptionally sexy tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

"You're very sexy as well, Your Highness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why thank you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

"And I must thank you as well for your help selecting my outfit, of course," she sats, brushing a hand over her blouse near the shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've made it your own," she says approvingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm the sort to always put my own spin on things." Small smile. "It drives anyone setting rules for me up the wall," she says in a conspiratorial whisper.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're an inveterate troublemaker."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I," she murmurs haughtily, "Am precocious."

(There was a tiny pause before precocious, a little hitch in her flow - almost like she changed what she was saying mid-stream.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"A fashion leader."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A princess must be a leader in all things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Check one success off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"With many more still to go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shall we take our leadership to the dance floor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She holds out her hand. "Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to get this party started!

Permalink Mark Unread

They're nearly immediately the center of attention, of course, even more than they were already. (They were already pretty much the center of attention.)

Leia is fully willing to hog the space next to the Imperial Princess here it seems, especially any more partnered dances, even if it gets her huffy looks from assorted actresses. (She's willing to let herself be introduced to people, though, and - yeah Leia is definitely weaving herself into the webs of politics being constantly played around Dalia. She's acting silly when she talks to people other than Dalia, a bit airheaded, in stark contrast to her usual sharp wit.) (She was acting a bit airheaded with the politicians too, actually.)

Of course, she's having fun, too, and most of her focus is legitimately on Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's perfectly willing to keep Leia by her side. (It's interesting to see her tactics here. Not too dissimilar to Dalia's own approach, actually.)

They can keep dancing long into the night, as the party slowly dies down and the music switches to more low-key, slow dancey selections. She has her comm set on silent, so she misses both the first and second alarms she set for herself about spending time with mom. The third she catches but dismisses. She's got time for one more dance. At least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Many of Dalia's invitees are the sort to stay well past midnight if they can, and the party's calmer but not fully dead, and the next song always comes on quick and it's always something Dalia's going to want to dance with Leia, a chance she can't miss...

Permalink Mark Unread

It's less than an hour until midnight when nearly all Dalia's guests very suddenly go still, the wave of alarm rippling through what's left of the crowd from the main door, those near other exits discreetly leaving, those not near exits edging towards whatever's nearest.

There's a shadow on the threshold.

Darth Vader isn't very visible under dance floor lights, and the hiss and rasp of her life support isn't audible over the music - but it's impossible not to notice her.

She seems nearly ready to leave, herself, posture closed in and unsure and unhappy to Dalia's eyes. (Though everyone else probably thinks she's angry, holding herself threateningly)

Permalink Mark Unread

-Oops.

"One sec," she says to Leia, and pads over to her mom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia stays where Dalia left her, posture guarded despite her attempts to look relaxed. She doesn't look inclined to avoid Vader, though, not like anyone else.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dalia," her mom says, tone unreadable through the deep hum of her vocorder. "I apologize for - interrupting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not interrupting. I told you that you were invited, didn't I?"

"Uh, I didn't tell anyone else, though. So. That's why they're all so awkward. You can still be here if you want, though. Or I can wrap things up and we can go find somewhere else to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I would like to go somewhere else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Hang on for just two seconds, I'll make a little announcement and be right back."

Permalink Mark Unread

She inclines her head and then fades back a bit into the shadows.

Permalink Mark Unread

She heads back over to Leia. "Hey, so I forgot about a thing I have to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Dalia a considering look and nods - then glances extremely quickly back at Vader. "Everything okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, just-" She leans in to whisper in Leia's ear. "Gotta spend some time with my mama."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Vader's also your mother?" she whispers back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Her brain whirs. And...)

"I should apologize to her for keeping you," she says.

((Leia's very good at spotting opportunities.))

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want. She's not very, um, socially graceful, just to warn you. I'm gonna let everyone know I'm leaving, so I'll join you in a minute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Part of being a princess is having social grace to spare." She kisses Dalia on the cheek. "See you in a minute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kay."

Dalia heads over to the DJ's booth to commandeer a mic, thank everyone for coming, announce she's retiring for the evening, and say that they can keep partying if they want but after midnight they'll need to find a new venue.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Leia walks over to Darth Vader, head high.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something about Vader stiffens as Leia approaches, though she doesn't visibly move.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps in close. "I wanted to apologize for keeping your daughter this long," she says, then eyes Vader's posture. " - It's loud in here, do you want to step out? Dalia will catch up."

(She has no idea why she said that, but... Sometimes Leia's instincts get ahead of her mouth.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader nods, the movement jerky, and then turns and sweeps back into the much quieter reception room - and then into a side room off of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia follows.

And, tone polite and even, continuing her apology without a hitch: "I should have realized Dalia would be spending some time with family today, and asked her about her other commitments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It was not your responsibility."

Permalink Mark Unread

She inclines her head. "Still."

"Family is important."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's quiet for a long moment, then: "It is."

"She has... Other commitmemts than me."

Permalink Mark Unread

(...There is absolutely no non-awkward way out of this, and Vader is known for her temper.)

(Leia makes decisions and also choices, sometimes.)

"She lost track of time," she says, carefully. "She very much wants to celebrate with you as well, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tonight is not for celebration."

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia thinks of the Empire Day celebrations going on throughout the galaxy right now. The parades are likely all done, the after parties still in swing. Alcohol flowing freely, curfews relaxed, people celebrating the end to war.

((She thinks of the dissidents being arrested. She thinks of fights, of drunks cornering a non-human refugee. She thinks of state dinners, of keeping her face perfectly blank while Tarkin bragged about catching a spy within Alderaan's Palace staff, no need to thank him. She thinks of executions. She thinks of all the places the war never ended. (She thinks of an imperfect thing, a thing better than what came after it, a rallying call and a beacon of hope, destroyed the day she was born. (She thinks of rebellion.))))

"A controversial opinion," she says, voice distant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Truth and ideas the court dislikes seem to go hand in hand, lately."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives a noncommittal hum.

Then, slowly: "But your daughter was born today, too. Whatever else happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yes."

"At times..."

"Tragedy and new opportunity can coexist."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and tries to think of what to say next.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia reappears.

"Hey you two. Everything going okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Dalia a soft smile. "Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's mom nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." She turns to Leia. "So, um, we usually go and do some meditation for a while..."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - You would be welcome to join us."

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia had been opening her mouth to politely agree and excuse herself.

She just blinks, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...If you wish."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her brain reboots pretty quickly. "If it's alright with you, Dalia - ?" she asks, glancing at her girlfriend.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Then I'd love to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great." She hooks one arm through Leia's, and the other through her mama's.

Off?

Permalink Mark Unread

Off.

The vigil that Vader holds each year is - quiet meditation, indeed.

(More like quiet depression, on Vader's part, though there's a keen interest directed at Leia, hovering just under the surface.)

It's not in the core of the Imperial Palatial Complex where Dalia's party was - rather, a short distance away, in an enormous auxiliary building with a nearly palpable cloud of misery around it. It was the Jedi Temple, once, though renovations have changed much of its iconic outline. It's now a military barracks for Vader's Fist, the 501st Battallion, and an academy for the Inquisitors. It's a prison, too, and an execution ground.

Vader lands them on a small platform, and leads them to an apparently unused hall, and into a suite of rooms that looks - softer, almost. The air's still strangled by grief, but it's a different grief than the fear and hatred permeating everything else.

Vader says nothing, merely kneels in the main room, head bowed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mama used to live here," she whispers to Leia. "She comes here to remember the past."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Vader must have been a Jedi, then.)

She nods, slightly. "Did she - lose someone?" she whispers back, even more quietly.

(She feels like an intruder, amid all this grief.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Her teacher."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Oh."

(Definitely a Jedi, then.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia gives Vader a hug, then kneels down next to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia kneels beside Dalia.

She knows how to meditate at least, so she's not just standing around awkwardly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia drops into the groove slowly, but she does manage it.

Permalink Mark Unread

It feels like a long while before Vader seems done.

She reaches out to take Dalia's hand, then, and says, quietly, "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grips her hand tightly.

"You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes Dalia's hand and rises.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia stands, too, body only a little stiff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader turns her head slightly.

Then, into the heavy air: "Will you be - around Dalia, more?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod. "Yeah." A pause, then: "I really like her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

"I like you more than - her usual type."

Permalink Mark Unread

(There is so much to unpack there.)

Leia just lets herself blush a smidge, and says, tone dry but almost amused: "High praise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Leia's very good," Dalia says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader inclines her head, then, almost reluctantly: "It's time to leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"Another birthday over."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another year."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They just keep stacking up, don't they."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They do." She seems sad, almost, and she falls quiet again as she leads them out and then back to the part of the Palace complex that had housed Dalia's party (after confirming with Leia she'd left some of her things there).

She leaves them both, but not before drawing Dalia aside to say, "I'll see you tomorrow. And I would like it if you brought your - girlfriend - to meditate again some night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try to make it happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"Thank you." Then: "I'm - glad you like her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's good. I'm glad you like her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"Thanks for coming to my party."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"Thank you for - inviting me. And for - coming with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Love you, mama."

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze. "Love you too, Dalia."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

Does Leia need a ride home?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd appreciate one, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's happy to provide, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Once they're alone in the speeder: "This was a really excellent birthday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For me too. I'm happy I could spend it with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same." Grin. "We should set up another date soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely. I think it's your turn to pick."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll give it some thought."

Then: "It's lucky Vader likes me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She only looks scary. Mostly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug, then: "Even if she was a tooka-kitten... She's your mom, right? So she's important to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How's that - work?" Pause and then, awkwardly: "I mean, I've always just heard that the Emperor's your mother... I'd had no idea you and Vader were - at all related. She'd - never seemed like someone with a past."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's- complicated. And the details are, uh, a state secret. Kind of."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod. "Yeah, that - makes sense..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Princess life gets a bit complicated sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "It does, doesn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunate how that works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like complicated, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Well. Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "Keeps life interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A benefit too often overlooked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looking for opportunity where others don't see it is one of my specialties."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're good at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm good at everything I do, so if there's something I'm extra good at..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're extra good at ego," she giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only when deserved."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like that's most of the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and gives Dalia a quick kiss. "You deserve your ego, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, you think so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're pretty cool, so, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

And they arrive at Leia's family's apartments. She gives Dalia a nice long kiss before heading inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a way to end the night.

She wears a silly grin the whole way home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader is even more quiet and withdrawn for a little while after the birthday party - long enough for Dalia and Leia to have several more dates - until she abruptly gives Dalia permission to invite Leia over to one of their evenings together.

Permalink Mark Unread

...A little weird, but she won't object.

Dalia issues the invitation straightaway.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia responds pretty promptly - she'd be delighted. (The language is a little more formal and stilted than her usual texts; she's also at least a little weirded out.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, a yes is a yes. She'll get over it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Dalia want to pick her up again?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure!

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia will be waiting, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia shows up promptly, so as not to keep her waiting too long.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey cutie," she says, sliding into the speeder and giving Dalia a kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"Hey yourself. It's nice to see you again."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "It is. We should hang out more often."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If only you weren't so busy with Senate work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I like the Senate work," she says with a laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good, 'cause you do a lot of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll probably be more interesting once I'm on the higher level stuff, too..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I should wrangle myself a position on some committee."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wanna be my coworker, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"More time with you wouldn't be a bad thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like it - so long as you don't distract me when I'm working."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A distraction? Me? I would never."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You sound like you don't believe me, princess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you're already pretty distracting..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take that as a compliment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Then off to her place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader is sitting in Dalia's living room, a pad propped up before her. (She's not doing work, not with Leia coming over, but - Dalia's mom reads a lot of stuff even outside of her massive load of paperwork and reports from her position in the Empire.)

She doesn't stand to greet Leia, but does nod to her, movement somewhat stiff. "Princess Organa."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Vader."

...That might have sounded unfriendly. Moreso than Leia wanted to sound.

Then: "You can call me Leia." She smiles a little. "Since I'm dating your daughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pauses for a long, uncomfortable moment. (Her emotions are usually extremely muted, even to Dalia - but right now, Dalia can pretty clearly pick up on an ache in her mom's heart, almost but not quite grief.)

"You are," she says. "Leia."

(There's a flicker of want from her, flaring brightly before it's buried. (Vader doesn't often want things. The only time Dalia's felt anything similar was tied to her mom's fear of the Emperor, of the idea of Dalia trusting her.))

Permalink Mark Unread

...Huh.

Wonder what's, uh. Up. With that.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She glances away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she says, like absolutely nothing weird is going on, and takes a seat on one of the couches with a glance at Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, uh. We just kinda... do whatever, if you have any Senate work you need to catch up on or whatever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's basically always," she says, then pats the seat next to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia plops herself down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle! And she pulls out her own pad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time for work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Work cuddles are excellent.

(Leia keeps to just the most boring parts of her work, things her father's office is known to be interested in enough to set a junior aide to researching them.)

(She isn't as tense around Vader as... Anyone else, actually, though there's a sense that she's paying very close attention to the Sith in the room.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And then about an hour in, she stiffens suddenly, her muscles twitching like they want to jump, startled, but she's controlling herself too much.

((Her gaze very, very carefully doesn't cut over to Vader.))

Permalink Mark Unread

Hrmm.

After about another fifteen minutes, Dalia carefully (she's not very good at this yet) reaches out to poke her mama. 'Everything okay?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Things are progressing well.'

A sense of unease - and a larger sense of exhaustion. (Vader is sick of feeling unable to trust her daughter - of feeling like she has to watch every word even here, because she can't let herself believe it won't just be reported to the Emperor - of having no one to be honest with - )

(Dalia gets the edges of that, and gets flickers of that often enough to guess at what Vader's thinking anyways.)

'They are - not yet okay, though.'

That thought slips across their bond before Vader can stop it.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I love you, mama.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I love you too, dear heart.'

That's honest, deep, whatever else lies between them - but it feels more raw, right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia looks up and flashes her a quick smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

The answering flare of emotion is - surprisingly strong, actually. A wave of fierce love than rockets down their bond.

(Vader's felt love this strongly at Dalia before - it echoes the intensity Vader felt in some of Dalia's earliest memories, after she was rescued from the people who stole her away from her rightful place in the Empire when she was an infant, who tried to hide her from her mother - but Dalia's ability to sense and identify emotions had been fledgling, then, and that Vader had been scared and angry and drowning in with her love.)

(The Vader Dalia's known for over a decade is still scared and angry, but it's grown increasingly muted over the years, and nowadays she's more depressed and grieving more than anything.)

(But this feels almost like hope.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like a good thing!

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia gives Dalia a bit of a curious look, picking up on... Something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whoops she forgot about controlling her face. Smile for Leia then back to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

Though - they don't spend the entire time on the couch, and at one point, when Vader has left the room to take a call, Leia murmurs in Dalia's ear, voice low enough that mics might not catch her words, "What was that about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia play dumb. She's pretty good at that.

"What was what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You and Vader earlier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just smiling at my mama. As a daughter does."

Permalink Mark Unread

She raises an eyebrow. "Alright..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Quick kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent distraction, A+ thinking Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's eyebrow says she's not really distracted, she's just backing off to be polite.

(And to kiss Dalia.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The outcome works, so she's okay with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia does seem content to just snuggle and chat lightly the rest of the evening.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nice and low-key.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Does Dalia want to spend the night together? They can go back to Leia's place...

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect. (Kiss!!!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Kisses!

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

They'll have to stop kissing to get to Leia's father's apartments, though...

Permalink Mark Unread

Very rude of the world to work like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely terrible of it. They should have kiss-teleports.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee. Dalia will let the Science Bureau know to get on that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle. "It'd be a public service, even."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A great savings in convenience for all citizens."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would add a lot of time to everyone's schedules."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So the effects would be multiplicative."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely a major quality of life improvement." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Eventually, alas, they are going to have to shift themselves...

Permalink Mark Unread

Tragically.

Leia's place isn't very far, though, so long as they make it to the speeder.

Permalink Mark Unread

A necessary sacrifice, and a trial they can overcome.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually.

And, hey, they have all night...

Permalink Mark Unread

As long Leia's the host, it's up to her to set the timetable.

Permalink Mark Unread

They get into her bed before midnight, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

The night's still young.

Permalink Mark Unread

With plenty of time for them to finish what they interrupted earlier.

Permalink Mark Unread

Define 'finish'.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I want to go past just kissing and groping, tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're sure..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am." Softer kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hungry kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee!

Very hungry kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's a good lead-in to the rest of the night's activities...

Permalink Mark Unread

It is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia shows off all her favorite tricks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia's having a lot of fun learning them.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's something that needs ample practice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll need to try hard to catch up to Dalia, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Trying hard's not her weak point, fortunately!

Permalink Mark Unread

Not in the slightest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia sleeps very well that night (once she does actually get to sleep, which takes more than a little while).

She's up early the next day, anyways, and has gotten familiar enough with Dalia's sleep schedule to make sure breakfast is available when she wants it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best girlfriend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia knows she is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

"Love you," Dalia says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you too," she says, voice quiet and almost surprised.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very good, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"You are too." And kiss. "I like you a lot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Glad to hear it, princess."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle, and another kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's going to get distracted from breakfast, isn't she...

Permalink Mark Unread

No worries. Leia will pull back to make sure she eats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww.

Permalink Mark Unread

She boops Dalia's nose with her finger. "You need food, silly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I need kisses, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll give you one kiss for every three bites, how about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a fair deal."

She starts eating.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes sure Dalia isn't rushing too much - and gives out kisses exactly as promised.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yay kisses!

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

But only one kiss at a time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Boo moderation!

Permalink Mark Unread

A princess must have self control.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's outsourcing that one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not very princess-y! Princesses are the ones outsourced to.

Permalink Mark Unread

And wouldn't you know it, Dalia just so happens to have one on hand.

It's the imperial system in action, really, taking the hard work of the outlying regions and guiding it to where it's needed most.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out at Dalia. "Outsourcing your decision making is more being a pet than a leader," she teases then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not all of my decision making. Just the boring bits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ones that involve restraining myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm very willing to restrain you." Smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Look at you, making innuendos on purpose. I'm such a good influence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think part of the point of relationships is influencing each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then this one is working."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have I been influencing you, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You make me happier."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww.

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Much kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm kisses.

"I do have a meeting this morning, though..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't keep you, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

One last kiss. "See you later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's meeting is pretty boring. She spends most of it doodling sketches of Leia on her datapad, occasionally looking up and making a stern face to keep the other attendees in line. So y'know, pretty much standard for her. Anything actually important will be in the minutes or her handmaiden will let her know.

Permalink Mark Unread

It goes pretty well.

And her mother is available for family dinner together soon after that; she'd like to see Dalia for it, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How has your week been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's been good!" Dalia happily describes what she's been up to. (Skimming over her time with Vader, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And, of course, the Emperor zeroes in on Vader, expressing concern for her mental health.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's doing better lately, Dalia thinks. More... stable.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's very good," she says. "Do you know what's changed? It'd be a pity if she regressed, later..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure. She showed up to my birthday party for a little bit, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's very unusual, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Yeah. I think that was the start of it, though. Or like, the first expression. You know mama doesn't really talk about what's in her head."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "That does make it very hard to help her..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you think we could do to help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think staying in one place is good. Settle into kind of a routine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? She's been very effective for missions, though, despite her issues..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mama's strong," Dalia agrees. "And if she's needed then she's needed, but- If she can get herself more together, she'll be even stronger, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's more to usefulness than strength, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know. It's just, um, shorthand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I understand."

"We'll see how Vader does over the next little bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"By the way... I think you'll be ready to start full training in the Force very soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oooh.

"Can't wait!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have Vader oversee your initiation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be something for her to do while we're keeping her close."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Make sure she's staying out of trouble," Dalia giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

"I'll be leaving many of the details of your training up to her, as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like I'll have to have a talk with her."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "I'll send her a message confirming you're ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, mother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia gives her mother a kiss on the cheek.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

"And how has Leia been?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "You're still happy with the relationship then, I take it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Extremely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

"Have you learned anything about her ambitions or her family's sympathies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's overheard some stuff, which she shares.

Permalink Mark Unread

She listens attentively. "Still not much concrete to implicate them directly... But this will help me discern their patterns - and if we remove their powerbase, proof won't matter regardless." She laughs a little. Then: "Thank you, Dalia. I'm very proud of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia beams. "You're welcome, mother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keep up the good work. I expect more next time we meet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will do my best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know you will, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small wiggle.

Dalia goes to bed happy that night.

She'll find Vader later tomorrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader is in her living room when she wakes up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Hi, mama."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Dalia."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're uh. Here early."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am."

"The Emperor informed me of her - expectations that I will train you in the Dark Side of the Force."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We talked about it last night."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Then, abruptly: "You will be moving into different quarters with me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I bring my stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...A few items. You will still have these quarters available, and you can leave the majority of your things here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long do I have to pack?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"An hour. You may bring only those items you can carry yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Sheeee's got some hasty prioritizing to do, huh. No time to waste!

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader waits by the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia returns with two bulging packs worth of clothing and items she definitely can't live without even for a little bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Her mama crosses her arms. "You do not," she says, sternly, "Need all of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can carry it, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then bring only the essentials," she says, tone flat. "You cannot train surrounded by needless things."

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh oh, serious voice.

Dalia quickly condenses down to one reasonably full bag.

Permalink Mark Unread

A start.

Vader drives them - to the old Temple, actually. She's silent and tense the entire way.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're staying here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

She's silent for a long moment, parking the speeder but not getting out.

Then: "It was one of the Emperor's conditions, given other - demands I made."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"Will I be practicing with the Inquisitors?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Not at first."

"You will focus on your training, and the trainees would only distract you at this point. In that vein - all visitors will need to be approved by me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay..." No parties, she's guessing.

"Will I be able to see Leia?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

"She can visit, including over night, so long as you complete your assigned exercises."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

She inclines her head.

"I want you to grow strong. I - do not mean to isolate you entirely from all joy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mother talks like that's a fine line to walk, sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks away, and doesn't answer, instead ordering Dalia to follow her. Her heavy, mechanical breaths echo loudly as she leads Dalia to their new quarters - not those Vader once shared with her own Jedi Master, but similarly isolated.

Then, as the door seals behind them, as quietly as her vocal modulator will let her say: "Joy and power are not opposites." Almost wryly: "Both are illusions, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that Force philosophy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In some ways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Cool." She sets her bag down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"These rooms are private," she says. "There is no surveillance within them - though there is outside of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will we be mostly staying here, or...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly here for your training. There are exercise rooms  that are part of this suite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kay. Um... How long d'you think it'll be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was a student for over ten years," she says, wryly. "But you can leave the temple during the day, when we do not have lessons scheduled."

"We will go off planet some as well, as soon as the Emperor approves it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Just mostly trapped, not completely trapped, then.

Dalia nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...The Dark Side is - unkind," she says. "And the Emperor would not approve of me teaching you to use the Light Side, even if - I could reach it still."

"I do not want to destroy your spirit, or - lastingly harm you - though I... Do not know how to train someone to use the Dark Side without cruelty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can... experiment?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Using the Dark Side unprepared is - unsafe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unsafe how?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It twists your mind, and if you are uncautious enough, it will destroy your body."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Body destruction would be bad."

Mother made this sound a lot more fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was very common for Sith masters to grow old before their time. Many sought immortality - many were killed by the same power they tried to force to their will."

"That is what the Dark Side is. That is what the Sith are. Greed, and desperate want for things you don't have, and a willingness to cross any line in pursuit of power, and cruelty and mistrust and betrayal."

"Every single Sith of the Line of Bane - the one the Emperor currently names herself the Master of - has in the end been destroyed by the works of their own hands. Each and every one has thought they would be the exception. Each and every one has been wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But... Mother's different?"

She has to be different.

Or Vader might be wrong, Dalia should remember to keep that possibility in mind. (It's harder when she's right here, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"She believes she's immortal."

"She's different, perhaps, in that she will never permit those under her control to grow strong enough to challenge her, and in that she puts no real effort into preserving her apprentices' lives. She is still a Sith."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - don't know what proof I can offer that you would accept."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um... Maybe let's just leave that alone for a bit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So should I get my room set up or are we jumping right into things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Get your room set up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes mama." She goes to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

She waits in the main room. Does another sweep for bugs. Paces.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia... doesn't have much stuff, so it doesn't take her long to come back out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Settled?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits on one of the couches and gestures to the one across from her. "Sit."

Permalink Mark Unread

She does.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she guides Dalia into a meditation session. Quietly.

(She seems wrung out, to her daughter's eyes. Worn down and exhausted, the thin edge of emotion she's gained over the few weeks since Dalia's birthday wearing thin.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia has a bit of trouble dropping all the way in to the focus state.

Permalink Mark Unread

She - can guide Dalia, if needed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll- try working on it herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meditation time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader relaxes over the course of the session.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, good.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she says at the end, voice quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Love you, mama."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you, too."

Then: Vader would like Dalia to explain everything she knows of the Force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's understanding is very surface-level, heavily informed by what she's heard the Empress talking about.

Permalink Mark Unread

She listens intently, mentally pulling up lists of texts she wants Dalia to read, noting points she wants to cover, asking further questions to draw out Dalia's mindset around the Force.

(Vader would very much enjoy teaching, if not for the world she found herself in.)

And then: to the larger of the exercise rooms. She wants to see how well Dalia moves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia moves pretty well, it turns out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Vader puts her very thoroughly through her paces - stretches, general exercises, sparring - until Dalia either collapses from exhaustion or asks to stop.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's in good shape, and she prefers moving to sitting and thinking, so this will take a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Vader doesn't object to this being the last item on their agenda for the day. (She needs time to think over lessons more.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool.

Dalia sends a tired holomessage to Leia, letting her know she'll be harder to get in touch with than usual for a little while.

Permalink Mark Unread

u ok?

Permalink Mark Unread
ye

just some intense princess training u kno
Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mama can Leia come over tomorrow night?" she calls.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a small pause, then: "Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

love u too cutie <33

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm good end for the day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully her good end prepares her for the training the next day.

Vader's not exactly being cruel, not mocking Dalia or pushing her past any sense - but Vader isn't ramping her up particularly slowly. They have a physical training session first in the morning, followed by meditation, then several texts for Dalia to start reading, then more physical training, then an exhausting questioning session on what Dalia read earlier...

Permalink Mark Unread

It's harder than she's had to work in a long, long time. Maybe ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader is going for 'ever,' by a pretty large margin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oof.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yet -

There's places Dalia's doing better than yesterday already. Vader points those out, softly, almost surreptitiously, like she's hesitant to acknowledge it straight on.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's helpful for Dalia's motivation.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's... Good.

Vader gets slightly less hesitant when she notices that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent!

Permalink Mark Unread

There's something warm in her, a sense on the edge of Dalia's awareness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can Dalia... sort of gently poke at that?

Yes, though Vader's attention sharpens towards her.

(The feeling is - love, not quite happiness, but certainly some pleasure. Vader loves her daughter - and she offers that more strongly as Dalia pokes.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee Dalia likes that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Long breath.

And Vader reaches out even more to Dalia, her mind pressing gently against her daughter's. (There's more than love, this close, more of Vader's constant roil of emotions lurking under it - more of the full complexity of her mind.)

And a voice in Dalia's head, light and soft: 'I love you, dear heart.'

Vader feels closer than normal in the Force, much easier to reach back towards.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I love you too, mama.'

Dalia passes her bright, burning heart back for Vader to see. Full of love, compassion, of brilliant desire for all her loved ones to be happy, to be fulfilled, to be themselves.

Permalink Mark Unread

It hurts, receiving that - Vader reaches hungrily for more.

'I don't want to be the one to destroy your heart,' she thinks, and it isn't meant for Dalia - but Dalia hears it anyways.

Permalink Mark Unread

'You could never.'

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a storm of remembered pain in her - betrayal of many kinds, heartbreak,  grief -

'Those we love or trust have the most power to destroy us.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug. (Vader would be shaking, if that was really a coherent concept in this suit.)

'I never want you to know the suffering I have.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm sorry, mama.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Her emotions indicate she'd very much like to be crying or keening in sorrow, right now. She doesn't make a noise beyond the deep, regular hiss of her ventilator.

There's something bitter and angry in her too, though, under the love and the pain and the grief. A tiny whisper of 'But you've never listened before' that she's trying very, very hard to strangle before it can reach Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I think we can make things better, if we try.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'How.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia- flinches, a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't mentally together enough to apologize. Doesn't know if she wants to.

She does flinch back from Dalia's own flinch, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

'It's - '

She wants to say 'not your fault.' She believes that, she does - but Vader's head gets tangled up easily, and Dalia never takes her side -

'Things will be better when the Emperor dies,' she thinks, angry and vicious and bitter - trying to hide that from Dalia, too, but her mind's too raw to be sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia doesn't know what to do.

Things with mama and mother seem more complicated than she thought.

But she knows she loves mama and she knows she can hug her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

(She's having a breakdown, and she can't stop - )

'Why don't you - just - believe me about her - why do you take her side - '

Permalink Mark Unread

Sad Dalia. Still full of love but also sad.

'...I don't want there to be sides.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'There already are.'

Something in Vader's mind snaps, and she shoves her thoughts, her memories into Dalia - vicious, angry, lashing out -

Vader's memories from before the Fall of the Republic feel like they happened to someone else. Not even an innocent version of her, but - someone hopeful and full of love, someone Palpatine destroyed and poured Vader into the ruined shell of. She has them, though, as patchy and unreal and distant as they are, and she's angry on that girl's behalf, too.

Palpatine as the Chancellor - playing at being Anakin's friend, inserting herself into her life in a thousand insidious ways - Anakin's memories growing fuzzy and irregular after meetings with her, lost time and a creeping sense of dread - a war, started on Palpatine's whim, the forced revelation of Anakin's prowess in battle meditation and Palpatine's relentless machinations to throw her into the front, to force her to use it again and again and again, feeling thousands - millions - of deaths as viscerally as if they were her own - Palpatine's knowing smile -

Her unwilling pregnancy, and Vader tries to steer away from how utterly violated she felt, how terrified she was, how much she hated being pregnant - how the knowledge of it kept slipping her mind, and every time she tried to terminate it she'd forget what she was doing - she tries not to dump that on Dalia because it wasn't her fault - Palpatine's knowledge of the pregnancy, her smug self-satisfaction -

Threats to the only person Anakin loved anymore (the slow destruction of anyone else). A distance created by Senate demands and war schedules between Anakin and anyone who could have rescued her -

Anakin's leash slipping just enough - her determination overcoming her fear - that she told the Jedi Council what Palpatine was, and it was a trap - Anakin loved the Jedi, and Palpatine manipulated her into being complicit in their fall -

The death of Anakin's Jedi Master at her own hands, with static in her mind. Palpatine on the scene nearly immediately - stopping Anakin from killing herself -

The aftermath.

Palpatine, a thousand questions -

Where did your child go?' she asked, holding Anakin's face in her hands. Anakin's body is broken, in pain.

'I killed her,' Anakin had spat, rage and despair and grief. 'You'll never have her.'

Palpatine tsk'ed. 'You really expect me to believe that?'

And pain, in Anakin's body and mind, lightning coursing through her as Palpatine tore through her mind.

It wasn't just Anakin's child that Palpatine wanted. A thousand secrets of the Jedi, any hint to where the survivors might hide -

Anakin let herself be destroyed rather than give up her secrets, and Palpatine made Vader from what was left. Vader hadn't known those secrets; her memory has returned in patches, unreliable trickles - she hadn't known Dalia was alive until Palpatine found her and slaughtered the family that Anakin's network had given her to, the family that died trying to protect her - Vader had believed Anakin's lie, and the knowledge of it had nearly destroyed her again.

(Palpatine stopped her from killing herself more times than she can count. This suit is the last part of that - Vader can't destroy the life support herself. She's tried.)

(Palpatine threatening Dalia on a hundred separate occasions, forcing Vader to commit atrocities - to stop trying to kill herself whenever she got half a chance - if she wanted her daughter alive and whole and sane. Palpatine's smile, the same easy friendliness she speaks to Dalia with falling from her lips.)

(Palpatine taunts her, still. Rubs salt in the wounds for no reason other than that she can. Palpatine adopted Dalia as one of those taunts, one of those threats, and the first time Dalia went to Palpatine to confirm something Vader had said about how Palpatine harmed her - when Dalia believed the Emperor over her own mother - after that, Palpatine had taunted Vader about how unloved she is, about her worthlessness in the eyes of anyone other than the Emperor. An attack dog, never a mother.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's just crying, by now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She stumbles back - physically and in the Force -

She's crying, too, her self hatred and fear a whirlwind around her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do things have to be terrible," she sobs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry."

She collapses against one wall, crying, then - there's a twist in the Force around her -

She keeps repeating how sorry she is. She doesn't seem able to stop.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then - after what feels like an eternity of crying, but is objectively an impressively short amount of time - the door to their rooms slides open, revealing Leia - who looks like she very hastily changed from her typical uniform to something she can move in, something that stands out less, who also looks like she's trying very hard not to look extremely freaked out -

She hurries in and steps up to Dalia, pulling her into a hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leiaaaaaaa. Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

So much hug. And hair pets; those are pretty important. And Dalia's head pressed to her shoulder, Leia's body bracketing hers - she sits, pulling Dalia into her lap, for maximum cuddles.

"You okay?" she asks, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I'm not okay." Hiccuping sob. "My mother is evil. I'm not- I'm not okay!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tight hug.

"It sucks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot of people don't." Squeeze.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia just needs some time to cry herself out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia holds her for as long as she needs.

(She's letting Vader reach out in the Force, too, though she's clumsy at returning that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader calms down fairly quickly - she's used to the world being horrible. (The torrent of information to Leia becomes less incoherent, more precise.)

She has several things she needs to do - practical tasks, to reduce fallout to Leia - but then she comes over to them and hovers, uncertain, quietly offering Dalia - another person to hug, if she needs it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She won't refuse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry," she says, after a long while - when Dalia seems to have mostly cried herself out. "I - didn't want to hurt you."

"I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'m sorry too. For not- for not realizing sooner."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

She's quiet, for a long moment. "You - realize now, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - You won't - go to the Emperor over this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'd just hurt you more. That's what she always does, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I won't go to her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you." She's - shaking a bit, mentally.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you, mama."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you too, dear heart." Squeeze.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs!

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

"We'll need to be cautious, however," she says at length. "The Emperor is - very likely to retaliate, if she senses I've turned you against her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How good at you at lying?" she asks Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To mot- the Emperor? Not very."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...We can't keep you away from her forever, not without tipping her off..." She looks very unhappy and stressed. "...I'll warn my father. And - I guess, you try to delay her finding out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am supposed to be being trained. So there's probably- some leeway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She knows I'm - angry at her, over forcing me to train you," she says, softly. "It would be normal for me to keep you from her for as long as I can."

"And... I might have a way to get all three of us off Coruscant without notice. It would delay her response to realizing any of us have gone missing."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - It's probably best to time any disappearances while the Senate's not in session. The Alderaan contingent usually returns to Alderaan, then, and - Mama can prepare us."

"But I should go with them, then. That won't be - suspicious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Emperor will be - more intensely after you. Dalia cares for you directly, and - I haven't been entirely successful in hiding my interest in you."

"My method would allow the Organas to very honestly say they have no idea where you or Dalia are, and - "

"Senator Organa and the Queen of Alderaan are harder political targets than you. They will be damaged less by questioning - and if the Emperor questions you herself, she will discover your Force sensitivity."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a face.

"...And if they genuinely don't know where I am - that gives them longer to stall. And they can push back against any accusations of kidnapping with that, at least enough it'll be harder for the Emperor to peel away their allies. Because I'd be missing too, and it's really, really common knowledge Dalia and I are dating, so 'two spoiled teenagers elope' is something Mama can suggest happened, so she can create doubt in any narratives that we're traitors. And make people think it's either that, or Alderaan's had their princess kidnapped, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well thought out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush. Tiny blush.

"Thanks." Then, to Dalia: "Me and you can also probably help build the narrative that 'maybe we eloped.' Go out together, act like we're sneaking away from overbearing guardians or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait Leia is Force sensitive???

"That won't be too hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile. "I could join your training then." And she glances at Dalia's surprised face and smirks. "Oh, and, by the way - I'm Force sensitive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for telling me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a secret only the best Rebels have access to." Shoulder bump.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess this seduction arc has a different ending."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A better one than normal." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle kiss. "And by best, I mean us and my parents," she says with a little laugh. "It's very exclusive company." Another kiss. "Though your mom noticed on her own - no one else has..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very subtle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When I want to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Awkwardly: "I had an... Advantage, in noticing. Even the Emperor hasn't spotted it - and wouldn't, without directly looking into your mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's try not to give her a reason to, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, no shit."

"...Wait, how did you notice, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Awkward shuffle.

"I - recognized your Force signature. The unique imprint of someone in the Force."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - How would that help? And, uh, no offense, but I think my parents would've noticed if you'd ever met me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

......Fidget.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Dalia is not always quick to draw conclusions. But not always is still sometimes. And there are, if she thinks about it, several pieces here...

"Mama," she says slowly, "how many children did you have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

".........Two."

Her voice is incredibly small. Almost inaudible.

Permalink Mark Unread

WHAT.

Permalink Mark Unread

"When, um, were you going to tell us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seemed - better to leave secret."

"It would make Leia far more of a target if the Emperor suspected."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's about to object -

But then she remembers that Dalia is bad at lying, that any further person you tell a secret is a weak point no matter how reliable they are.

And she remembers the reports of what happened to the family Dalia had been with before the Emperor found her.

"No shit," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - likely would have told you eventually, now that the - security situation has changed this much."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nodnod.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hesitates a bit, then, to Vader: "Can you step out a bit? Just - into the next room." She glances at Dalia. "I think we need to talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, stiffly, and detangles herself from Dalia, then stands. "I'll be - in the meditation room." And she retreats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia sighs and leans into Dalia, snuggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

"So."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So."

"I guess we're not just birthday twins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Actual twins."

"Uh. How do you- feel, about that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

"I felt connected to you, from the first time I met you. From the first time I saw you in a holo. I've always known you're - important. Special. Even though you were on the other side of the war."

"I really like having another connection to you. You're mine, in a lot of ways."

"And... I've always known I was adopted. I love my parents, and I'm happy with them as my only parents, but... I've always felt there was something missing, someone who should be by my side. My parents told me I shouldn't look into it. That the knowledge would be dangerous, and I listened, but... I dreamed a lot, too."

Then, teasingly: "And, last but not least, you're the absolute hottest option for 'long lost twin' I can think of."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

"You're my other half. I didn't even know I was missing you until I found you. I don't want to give you up, ever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me either." Kiss?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty enthusiastic kiss - with about the same excited desperation as when they first started kissing, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, Dalia's kind of missed that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmm, yeah. Keeping things fresh: very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very sexy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Downright essential.

Permalink Mark Unread

A critical foundation of this relationship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being the sexiest twin is of utmost importance to Leia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well... she's got a ways to go to catch up, still.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a quick study."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'll teach you well- sister."

Permalink Mark Unread

Very bright smile. "Thanks, sis."

Permalink Mark Unread

A smile like that practically demands a kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

A reasonable assumption.

Permalink Mark Unread

Better make it two kisses, just to be safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Important to fulfill your obligations thoroughly, and all that. (Kiss!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

They should probably stop soon, given Vader's only a room over... But Leia doesn't exactly have the same flinch reaction to Vader knowing she's having sex as she does to her Papa, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's not in the mood to go all the way right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's been a pretty intense day all around, yeah. Snuggling and kissing is - pretty good, right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

So: kisses and snuggles, until Vader comes back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Works for her.

(...She lets Vader know through the Force that they're decent and done talking. Luckily, once Leia learned she's Force sensitive, speaking mind to mind had felt very natural...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader awkwardly emerges.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi mama."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, dear heart." She reaches out to Dalia in the Force, offering her love and warmth.

Permalink Mark Unread

She reciprocates!! Happy family time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia smiles and snuggles into Dalia's side more.

"...There's lots to plan," she says, "But... Let's just rest for a bit first, maybe?" The thought makes her incredibly antsy, but - she wants to look out for Dalia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Recharge. Gather our strength."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hit the ground running later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And be out of reach before anyone can catch up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The best way to start." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Gigglekiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something softens in her.

"Dalia's room should be large enough for you both," she says, fondly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sleepover?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Frequent sleepovers would be - beneficial, for many reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll make it happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not exactly a hardship, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty much the opposite."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and kisses her sister again. But: "...Oh so what are we doing for dinner..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mama cooks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good... I don't, though I could manage with just prepackaged food..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fortunately we don't have to resort to that yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I honestly don't care."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll be the first one to drop from the meal plan, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your noble willingness to sacrifice is greatly appreciated."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "It's an important princess trait."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess I'll have to work on that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "Perfect princessness is a worthy goal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

To dinner, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep!

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader is, fortunately, a significantly better cook than 'prepackaged food.'

Permalink Mark Unread

It's enough to get through her total lack of a refined palette.

She's definitely not going to find sleepovers a hardship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tonight's a very good night to spend snuggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggles are definitely the superior recharging method.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vader even lets them sleep in the next morning, and prepares a nice breakfast.

Though, once they've digested -

The training regimen she outlines for their near future is brutal. She wants to upfront mental defenses, self control - she tells them that she's going to be teaching both light and dark side techniques, too. If they're breaking away from the Emperor anyways, her orders on what to teach Dalia are moot.

And: "I further evaluated the way we might surreptitiously leave Coruscant further, last night. I can have that path ready within a month."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...At least we won't be bored until then."

Permalink Mark Unread

The Force around her is distinctly amused. "No. You will not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! "Awesome."

Permalink Mark Unread

She drapes herself dramatically across Leia.

"I'm counting on you to carry me through this one, sister."

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns and kisses Dalia's cheek. "It's my job as the eldest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you actually?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty sure I am. You have the aura of a little sister."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmmm well if that means you're obligated to shower me in unconditional love and affection I suppose I have no objections."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! "And protect you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nuzzle! "Best little sister."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The one and only."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The only one for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Very kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia's gotta make sure to fill up on kisses before the start of the brutal training Mama has planned.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though kissing a sweaty Dalia who's collapsed from exhaustion does have it's own appeal to Leia...

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, but think about it from Dalia's point of view. That's hardly the best state for her to appreciate them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sacrifices are sometimes necessary.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leia will have to prove that to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She intends to, as thoroughly as it takes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something to look forward to!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

A reason to work hard in training, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Motivation!

Permalink Mark Unread

A service Leia is very happy to provide.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's sisterly teamwork for you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Enough to overcome any challenge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dalia certainly hopes so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "Hope is what keeps the flames of rebellion burning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We won't let the fire go out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll make our own hope, if we have to."
