Behold the wolf in his unnatural habitat, eating the foods of his people in traditional quantities, his typical companion away in the distant land of The Bathroom.

That is to say, Zeus is in Milliways with one and a half heavily topped pizzas, waiting for Harley and Andrea to come back.
Permalink Mark Unread
A young woman with bright hazel eyes and glorious hair walks into the bar.

She looks around.

She says: "Iiiiii'm confused."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi! Welcome to Milliways. It's an interdimensional bar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seriously?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup. If you don't wanna be in an interdimensional bar just turn around and close the door and it'll leave you alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I don't know if I want to be in an interdimensional bar," she says. "I've never been in one before. Is it a nice interdimensional bar? Will it give me cookies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's really nice, and she will give you cookies! You have to pay for 'em or run up a tab, though. She'll give you a free drink if you've never been here before though. Oh, and the bar is a she."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does the bar have a name, or just a pronoun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bar's name is Bar. Real easy to remember."

Permalink Mark Unread
"No kidding," she says. "Well. Isn't this snazzy."

She walks a little further into the bar, letting the door shut behind her, and looks around curiously.

"Is there a reason for the interdimensional bar...?"
Permalink Mark Unread
"It's a mystery."

Zeus gobbles up a slice of pizza.
Permalink Mark Unread

"How's the food?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awesome. Bar makes the best everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Every everything? The best best?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, I have a huuuuuge soft spot for stuff my imprint homemakes, but Bar makes really good everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Imprint?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, uh, I'm not a human, I'm a werewolf, rar, we do a thing called imprinting, I have done the thing, so I'm ridiculous amounts of in love with my boyfriend, basically."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Well, that's cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep! Anyway my name's Zeus, what's yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ophelia."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks! 'Zeus' is cute too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My mom has a thing for Greek deity names. And my imprint's name is Harley but he's in the bathroom and this place screws around with time and we don't have syncing thingies so it could be a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Harley is also cute, does everyone you know have a cute name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, maybe? Might depend on how picky you are. Andrea? Bartholomew? Elspeth? Jake?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Decreasing cuteness," she concludes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, not everybody I know has a cute name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But plenty of 'em!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Zeus giggles. And eats more pizza.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a lot of pizza," Ophelia observes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wolves eat a lot. You can have a slice if you want though."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Aww, thanks!"

Nom.

"Wow, this is good. Couldn't have done better myself," she approves.
Permalink Mark Unread

"You cook too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do I ever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, this is, uh, probably a weird question, but are you a reckless pansexual masochistic snuggle-fiend with a shitty home life and generalized affection for sharp things?"
Permalink Mark Unread

"...You're right," she says, "that is a weird question. And yes. And what the hell?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay so this bar does alternate dimensions! And sometimes the alternate dimensions are, like, not so creative, so it does people over and over again, but with some things tweaked, like, you don't look like my imprint, but you talk like him and there's also the pansexual reckless sharp things - I forget all the words I used already - there's also that thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not surprised I don't look like your imprint. What's your imprint look like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"White, almost as tall as me, not quite wolf amount of buff but close, longish curly hair, it's kind of hard to describe faces - you wouldn't have to look like him, though, there's one who looks more like Jake than like Harley for instance."

Permalink Mark Unread
So she really doesn't look like his imprint.

"Huh," she says. "Any other girl ones?"
Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh - yeah, I was going to say not born shaped that way but one was. And then there's magic. Wolves can actually only imprint on girl-shaped people, Harley was fucking around with magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh!" she repeats. "Magic, like, what kind of magic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a bunch of kinds, that kind was wish coins."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What other fun stuff can wish coins do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most anything if you have a big enough one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nifty. I want some."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have any on me. Harley'll have to come out of the bathroom eventually, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, one would hope!" she snickers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Usually he leaves Andrea with me and she'd do time syncing but she's been less clingy lately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Andrea?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, uh, she's his daemon. He started keeping his soul outside of his body after there was a teleportation accident? It's weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"But she can shapeshift, and if I'm holding her I'm literally holding Harley's soul, and so on, so, it's nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's holding somebody's soul like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a bigger deal on their end than mine. I mean it's a big deal for me mostly imprinty reasons but it doesn't feel like a whole lot? It feels like something. I would notice if I picked up the wrong rabbit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is she fluffy when she's a rabbit? I bet she's fluffy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very fluffy."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyway if I'm right about you being a one of Harley the bunch of you are called Jokers. There's a bunch of bunches. I'm the only me though, at least so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you tell when there's more? I mean, not everybody can be as - as recognizable as me, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's somebody who can tell by looking. She's an alt of the empress of my world, there's a bunch of her. She makes a point of looking at everybody."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gotcha. You have an Empress?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's not exactly the empress of everybody. She usurped this evil vampire government that was doing evil vampire things, and now she is the good vampire government. She's my empress 'cause I'm a wolf, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'The empress of my world' was a little unclear that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, there's a bunch of her, and lots of them are empresses, but of other worlds. Also I have, like, wolf educational background, where there was not so much attention paid to 'oh by the way we technically live in Canada, Canada is technically a thing' and more to 'this is the empress, this is her kid, the princess is the alpha's imprint, we are pretty thoroughly attached to this shadow government here'."

Permalink Mark Unread
Snort.

"What, and miss out on Canada? Poor Canada."
Permalink Mark Unread

"We live kind of in the middle of nowhere? I mean, I've been places. My family goes to Burning Man every year. But the Canada thing is just not as relevant as alphas and imperials and whatnot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure. I dunno, though, if I lived somewhere I'd want to live there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I live in my town. There's people in it. Wolves and imprints and puppies, and every now and then the Capital passes through, although I don't like to hang out with full vampires because they smell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They smell?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And vice-versa. I guess I could do magic to it but I don't, like, have Internet friends who are vampires."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Do magic to it'," she giggles. "Man, I wanna do magic to things."

Permalink Mark Unread

Zeus giggles. "What things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thing things! Shapeshifting? Cake? I would make the greatest cake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Harley prefers to make cake from scratch most of the time. And other stuff. He makes me omelettes. He makes really good omelettes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, no wonder, if he's used to magic. I'm not used to magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I guess. He grew up with it. The princess kidnapped him from another world when he was a baby because of the shitty childhood thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lucky Harley."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Sort of? Apparently Jokers are, like, metaphysically supposed to suffer, so when he skipped the shitty childhood then he later had to have a teleporting accident and meet Alternate Universe Scarier Than Hitler Lady and also spend a few years in the sun repeatedly doing the thing that really really magicked people do instead of dying over and over. The princess had to knock me out so I wouldn't be conscious while he was missing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He okay now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's better. He's not leaving Andrea on me all the time anymore. There was a while before he woke me up and he wasn't doing so hot then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Metaphysically supposed to suffer, huh? Sounds about right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The princess kidnapped another one but he's like twelve so he's got it out of the way enough that it won't chase him, Glass says. She's the one who sees weird stuff like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very kidnap-happy, this princess of yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's just the two Jokers, nobody else. She had the other Jokers' approval."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, don't get me wrong, I totally approve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's nice. When Harley didn't want to move away from Québec she stayed right next door to me till he grew up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And when I was asleep and Harley came home all scarier-than-Hitlered, she took care of him. Got him a poof, they're this spherical fuzzball animal from another world, sorta therapeutic to pet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that sounds completely adorable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's your world like, I'm guessing you have an Earth of some kind but even those vary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's an Earth! It's, I don't know, Earthy. What do normal Earths have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uhhhh - Canadas. Moons. Oh, here's a thing, is there a city called Gotham in yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not that I know of! Should there be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, that's actually probably a good thing? If you have a Gotham there's a funky storyline Jokers play out in them. Harley skipped it because kidnapping but it's gone all the way through a few places. Stuff explodes, you fall in love with a lady and make her very unhappy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't mind a little more exploding stuff in my life. Not a lot more, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you can arrange plenty of exploding stuff, but exploding Gotham in particular isn't the happiest story."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Lucky me not having one, then, yeah?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Apparently. Uhhhh, some Earths have magic, some have stuff that's sort of like magic but they don't call it that for reasons, some don't have either?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No magic!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, poor you. Annnnd there's templates, I guess. You don't have a little brother, do you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! Well, not that I know of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, well, you might have one you don't know of, I think it's happened that way a couple times, and those, uh, they can come out of the shit childhood okay but only if they are gotten out as kids, if it just runs its course they don't bounce back like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn," she says. "See, now I really want magic. If I've got a little brother somewhere that I don't know about I'd better find him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be a sister, they're only all boys so far," adds Zeus. "Some templates can be either but I think most of them are usually one or the other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I've got any little siblings whose childhoods are as shitty as my childhood was, I wanna know about it. And do some magic to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Man, I wish Harley had left Andrea, I dunno how long this is gonna take. I guess we could go to the Belltower? Probably nobody will sneer at me for being presumptuous about going to the Belltower and that is my imagination just because Bells wear crowns. But then you'll have Bells all over the place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm getting hilarious mental images that I'm pretty sure are not what you meant. 'Bells'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you're - you're probably a - Joker, the empress is a Bell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And is having Bells all over the place a bad thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, not really, they make pretty good empresses, they'll swoop in and fix whatever ails your world and whatnot. I find them intimidating though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What if there hypothetically wasn't anything wrong with my world a couple of magic cakes couldn't fix?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then they want to figure out what makes it tick and import it, probably, but you and them might have different standards of 'wrong with'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I bet we do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have one? The Bells will all be very excited if you have one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, how would I know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Her name will have a 'bel' in it. And she will be the sort of person who would take over the world and then run it very nicely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm," she says. "Well, if I ask nicely, will these Bells of yours give me magic to play with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think that's standard procedure with Jokers, yeah. That and introduce you to all the other ones."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now that sounds like fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yeah, they have big piles, they're fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want a Joker pile!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"With Harley taking forever in the bathroom the fastest way to get one is the Belltower, you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure," she declares.

Permalink Mark Unread
Zeus eats another slice of pizza first.

Then he says, "Wait, I'm an idiot, I forgot I'm telepathic, I've gotten used to Andrea being on my shoulder or whatever all the time and forgot about the brainphone. Hang on."

[Harleeeey found a maybe-Joker in the bar.]
Permalink Mark Unread
[Ooh,] says Harley, and he appears next to them while Ophelia is still just beginning to giggle. Andrea, currently a ferret, leaps from his shoulder to Zeus's.

"Hiiii," says Harley.

"Hi!" says Ophelia. "I want magic. And then I wanna fuck every single one of you."

Harley cracks up. "Yeah, I'll bet you're a Joker."
Permalink Mark Unread

Zeus smiles and scritches Andrea.

Permalink Mark Unread
"Seriously though: magic," says Ophelia.

"All right, all right," laughs Harley, "one sec, I'm gonna check you're actually one of me."

He leaves Andrea with Zeus and freecasts to the Enchanted Forest.

[Hey, Glass! There's a new Joker in Milliways, can you come look at her and make sure she actually is a Joker before I mint her? I'm pretty damn sure, but she's a new face.]
Permalink Mark Unread
[Coming.]

Jane drops Glass in the Belltower and Glass lets herself into the main bar.

"That's a Joker all right," she confirms. "Felicity and Corona's cluster, first phase. What do we call you?" she asks.
Permalink Mark Unread
"Ophelia," says Ophelia.

"Pretty," says Harley. "How'd you pick it?"

"Shakespeare," she shrugs.

"Anyway, poof, you're a mint. Did nobody tell you how minting works, do I get to tell you how minting works?"

"I guess you get to tell me how minting works!"

"So the deal is, you make wishcoins out of pain," says Harley, grinning.

"Awesome," says Ophelia.
Permalink Mark Unread

"You can also acquire an enchanter's aura if you visit my world and donate some magic to the forest. I bet Harley will help. And we can give you a Janegem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's a Janegem?"

Permalink Mark Unread
"Jane is a computer-person." Glass taps her own gem. "She uses these to have eyes and ears various places, with which she can pick us up and put us down, even between universes. She also syncs time. She doesn't have a hundred percent uptime history, but she's very, very handy."

[Hi,] says Jane. [You're an alt of my dad!]
Permalink Mark Unread
[Oh, weird. Hi!] says Ophelia. "Siiiince the very next thing I'm about to do is go have a ton of sex, I think I'll pass on that for now."

Harley giggles.
Permalink Mark Unread

"You can," says Glass, "turn off the camera and microphone without wrecking her connection."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Yeah but I'm really keen on the ton of sex I'm about to go have."

"Should I see who's free?" giggles Harley.

"You should!"

Harley vanishes for approximately a second.

"Poof, now you can teleport," he says when he reappears, "I'll teach you to freecast later, right now you and me have a date with a huge pile of our alts. Follow me. Bye Glass! Bye Zeus, love you!" And he disappears again.

Ophelia teleports after him.
Permalink Mark Unread

[Love you too.]

Permalink Mark Unread
Milliways time dilation makes it hard to determine exactly how long Ophelia spends in a pile of Jokers. She does quite a lot of shapeshifting, including mimicking the other Jokers and playing a game of who-can-be-the-fluffiest-thing with Petaal and Ivy. (There is not really a clear winner, but there wasn't meant to be.)

But she never takes her original form. No one cares - it's moderately obvious that the shape she met them in wasn't the one she was born with, but she doesn't show anyone what she used to look like and they are all fine with that.

She amasses a large store of coins. She learns how to freecast. She doesn't bother enchanting herself an aura just yet. She conjures cake. Everyone freecasts to the Joker's asteroid in Origin and she redecorates it extravagantly.

It's pretty obvious to all the Jokers that Ophelia wants wishcoins for something, and has some reason to be deeply paranoid about telling anybody what it is. None of them raise a fuss about it. She's early-phase, but she's still a Joker; she can solve her own problems if she wants to. So.

Ophelia freecasts home, with a dormant Sue-link as her line back to the rest of them. (By admission, Janegems are basically spying devices. She doesn't feel like taking chances with being spied on. She trusts her own alts, after they all linked up and shared their various histories with her and nobody said a thing about how much she was leaving out of what she shared in return. She has no idea how she would even begin to verify that a strange Bella was actually a Bella, and has no point of reference at all for Jane herself.)

And Trouble perches on a roof as a pigeon, and brainphones Bella.

[Hey. I found a thing.]
Permalink Mark Unread
There is a long pause, and:

[A thing?]
Permalink Mark Unread

[A thing. A kind of really hard to explain thing? Where are you right now? Uh, a decent short version might be 'I scored what sure looks like totally arbitrary magic fueled by pain off of what sure looked like about twenty alternate-universe versions of me, without telling any of them anything about where I was from or why I wanted it'.]

Permalink Mark Unread

[I'm home.]
Permalink Mark Unread

[Nobody around who'd be surprised by me teleporting right in front of you? I mean, and shouldn't be?]

Permalink Mark Unread

[In this room it's just me right now.]

Permalink Mark Unread
Now it is her and a pigeon.

Now it is her and human-formed Trouble, fully clothed.

"Poof, you can teleport," he says. "Poof, you can arbitrarily shapeshift."
Permalink Mark Unread

Bella blinks at him. "How do I work these new powers?" she wonders.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno, it was obvious to me," he shrugs. "Anyway, those are kind of trivial, the big one is minting and you'd get way less use out of that than me. You can have it anyway if you want, it's just a hex, hexes are cheap." He fans out a progression of coins in his hand, from triangle up to seven-pointed star, all made of what looks like clear glass veined with thick twisting streaks of colour. The streaks move, slowly but visibly. "Arbitrary magic fueled by pain. You touch a coin and make a wish and if it's a big enough coin and it's not a specifically impossible wish, wish comes true. Anybody can wish on 'em but only mints can make 'em. These are all mine."

Permalink Mark Unread
Bella looks at these coins.

"Can they by any chance pause time everywhere but here so you can explain this to me and I can think without large quantities of awful things happening elsewhwere while we do that?"
Permalink Mark Unread
"Don't see why not."

He disappears the coins.

"There. Took a hex."
Permalink Mark Unread
Bella looks out the window.

Bella sits down.

"What happened?"
Permalink Mark Unread

"I was in one of my human morphs - this one," he flickers briefly into the appropriate shape to demonstrate, "and I walked into the library and instead of the library there was this bar. Cute guy sitting at the bar with a ton of pizzas told me it was interdimensional, we got to talking, I said my name was Ophelia, he's Zeus apparently, and also apparently his boyfriend is a - what was it he said, something like 'pansexual masochistic snuggle-fiend with a shitty home life', anyway there's like twenty of me and we're collectively called Jokers. I'm also pretty damn sure there's a bunch of you, but I only met the one, and I don't have a way to verify those. The Jokers all telepathically dumped their life histories on me, I gave back something heavy on the childhood trauma and light on the identifying details, I'm pretty convinced about them, but I don't think the same solution exactly applies when it's you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to meet the bunch of me."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'll - hm. Do you still care about secrecy, should we meet 'em somewhere that's not your house?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... don't if they're me, do if they're not."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Well, okay, and we haven't verified that they're you, so. I'll terraform an asteroid," he says. "I even got one in mind."

And he thinks for a few seconds, and then says, "Okay, there. Asteroid time," and vanishes.

[Asteroid's in the same time bubble as your house. Teleporting should be obvious but I can come get you if it's not.]
Permalink Mark Unread

Teleporting is obvious enough that she's there presently.
Permalink Mark Unread
They are on an asteroid. The asteroid has Earth-standard gravity and is carpeted in soft green grass, but above and around them is a black sky speckled with stars. There are cozy armchairs and couches arranged in a loose circle; Trouble is sitting in an armchair.

"And now I call 'em," he says.

He tells the link that there is a Bell in his world who wants to meet the rest of her.

Celo, being the one currently in Chronicle, brainphones Glass.

[Hey, turns out Ophelia's got a Bell, she wants to meet you all, somebody'll get a Janegem to her in a sec—] Harley appears on the asteroid. [—there, somebody did. Reading between the lines, something's going on in their world that makes Ophelia intensely fucking paranoid about telling anybody anything about them, and if it's enough to make a Joker paranoid, I can only imagine what the Bell's gonna be like.]

Harley plops himself into Trouble's lap. (It is not at all difficult to figure out which one of these people is Ophelia.)
Permalink Mark Unread
[Thank you.]

Glass appears.

"Hello again, Ophelia. Hi, new Bell, pick a nickname."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Butterfly."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Butterfly it is. I'm Glass. You look kind of... uh... shellshocked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You look like me. How do I know that you don't just look like me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm not sure if we've actually had this problem before. We know you're us because I can tell by looking - before that Bar did the same thing - uh, you can tell we're you because we're about to hand you lots and lots of magical power and assume you'll do good Bell things with it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's your shot at the genie," Trouble puts in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do I have to do?" Butterfly asks Glass.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This... isn't a trade. This is, you are us, therefore if we just free and clear give you stuff, stuff that we would approve of will follow straightforwardly. ...Uh. Possibly I should mention that one of us is in school to be a therapist. What in the fuck is wrong with your world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So much," says Trouble.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The worst thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's n- one of us grew up on a planet where literally every human being was brainwashed on a daily basis to adore the brainwasher and the monarch who employed her. She's not shellshocked. Butterfly, what's...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why didn't the brainwasher get her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Except her, yes, I neglected to say; some of us have a template immunity to mental magic - what happened to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing yet. Nothing yet. To me."

Permalink Mark Unread
Glass takes a moment to process the implications of this.

"Okay - time dilation is already in place, so, good, everything will be okay, Butterfly, do you want to come camp out in the Belltower and learn about magic and relax and so on, the world will wait, it's waiting very patiently, you can come meet all your alts and make plans and we can grab anybody you want to have visiting and explain it to them too, usually we have a party when we find a new one but you don't seem to be in the mood - it'll be okay, there's no native magic here, we will handle it all for you if you need us to, okay?"
Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do I have to actually do anything or can you just take me whenever you want and you're being polite?"
Permalink Mark Unread

"...Second thing. If you would rather just sit there silently rather than risk inviting a metaphorical vampire into your metaphorical house I'll whisk you away in, say, five minutes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And hey," says Trouble, "whatever else is going on, I still have arbitrary magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whoa. I've never gotten to watch that happen in real time before," Glass says, blinking at Trouble.

Permalink Mark Unread
"Watch what?"

The transition is nearly done; he has skipped straight past the wandering phase and gone into - something else, something that comes between 'wandering' and 'retiree'.
Permalink Mark Unread

"You just changed phases. Sublimated them, practically, you skipped one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, is that what that was. Huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. What's it like on the inside?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like... mm," he says, considering. "Deciding that if Bella's too freaked out to save the world, I'll do it."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Huh."

Glass doesn't comment on whether that seems likely to her.
Permalink Mark Unread

"Assuming I'm not being had," says Butterfly, "I think I'll be okay to do it after a few days, tops, to decompress." Wryly, "It's sort of my specialty."

Permalink Mark Unread
Trouble shrugs.

"I'm pretty sure we're not being had."
Permalink Mark Unread

"That would sure be nice."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Yep."

Trouble hugs his lapful of Harley.
Permalink Mark Unread

"A few days to decompress is easy," Glass says. "I wonder who else you have besides a Joker. I can run a sweep and see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd - rather find that out myself and do it myself, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Trouble is pretty sure Zeus was one of Rhea, but he doesn't see any point in bringing that up right now.

Permalink Mark Unread
The five minute mark passes.

Glass whisks Butterfly away.
Permalink Mark Unread
Trouble thinks for a few minutes, snuggling Harley, and then he checks that Robin isn't in the middle of anything public and includes her in the time-bubble. Explanations ensue.

It takes Trouble freecasting back to Milliways to reopen his door, plus a little more teleportation and time dilation, but he gets Robin into the bar and goes back to the asteroid to snuggle Harley some more.
Permalink Mark Unread

Robin finds the Belltower. She peers at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello," says a woman's voice from one of the external speakers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi," says Robin. "Is my friend Bella - Butterfly - in there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, she is. You're whitelisted to visit her if you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

The door opens. Butterfly is not on the first floor. "Stairs are to your left," says Jane.

Permalink Mark Unread

In she goes. She finds the stairs.

Permalink Mark Unread
Butterfly is on the second floor.

"Hi, Robin."
Permalink Mark Unread

With her is someone who looks just like her, but several years older. "Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi and hi," says Robin. "So - Butterfly - decided if we're being had yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure we are not being had. The large quantities of unchecked magical power and no catch yet has been a clue. This is Aether, by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you. I'm Robin, but apparently you already know that," says Robin. "Good, Trouble was worried."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm in good shape, way better than I was. I should be ready to go home and solve all the everything in another subjective day or three."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want Trouble to wait for you? He seemed pretty well ready to start solving things himself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I want him to wait for me will he?"
Permalink Mark Unread

"I would - hope so, but you do have the worst Bell/Joker relationship the peal's ever seen," says Aether. "Which is probably affecting him less than it's affected you but makes me unconfident in my prediction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He specifically asked me to ask you if you wanted him to wait, if it came up," says Robin. "Asking just to screw with you really doesn't seem his style."

Permalink Mark Unread

Butterfly glances at Aether.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you let him go ahead without you my best guess is that you'll find whatever he comes up with to be stylistically displeasing, morally tolerable if more risk-tolerant than you'd like, and involve very little of you wearing a crown."

Permalink Mark Unread
Butterfly snorts.

"I'd rather he wait," she says.
Permalink Mark Unread
Robin finds 'stylistically displeasing' funny enough that she bounces this utterance to Trouble through her Sue-link.

It comes back with commentary from War.

"The Jokers aren't sure about your estimate," she volunteers.
Permalink Mark Unread

"...Uh, are you clear that Butterfly's visitor whitelist is a whitelist and not a free-for-all for reasons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Eh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Butterfly is on a low-stress diet while she decompresses. She made a list of people who don't stress her out, and no Jokers are on it. Let's not relay messages just yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I think the specifics of 'let's not relay messages' are a lot more obvious to you than to me," says Robin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please do not attempt to serve as a relay point for anything resembling real-time conversation between Trouble and Butterfly, nor distribute detailed information about what Butterfly's up to, nor bring her news about current events since most of her world is on heavy dilation and there shouldn't be any current events that need her attention. One-off yes-or-no questions like you first came in with are fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, well, if you wanna know what War has to say about your guess, ask him," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I may. Thank you. If Jokers want to talk to me they have all sorts of ways of doing it without interfering with Butterfly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Butterfly sighs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's not keeping me in solitary or anything, I made the list," Butterfly says. "What're you looking at us like that for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno, you just looked - more upset than I'd expect from somebody who just got tons of superpowers and a free vacation from all of life's problems," shrugs Robin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pealing is pure upside, to the point where it comes with enough leeway for Butterfly to be something other than completely on and controlled and functional one hundred percent of the time. So some stuff is bubbling up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, that makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is good, being on all the time is exhausting, especially without magic boosts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. Have a nice magic holiday?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did anybody tell you you're a template? I mean, you'll have to check with Glass to be positive, but you resemble a template."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who do I resemble?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're called Kingfishers, because the ones who go by Rupert and the ones who go by Ripper are embarrassed by each other and they compromised on the suborder shared by the animals they'd have as daemons."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Snort.

Permalink Mark Unread
Butterfly produces a square and spends it.

Striped kingfisher illusion.

"That'd be yours."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, it's cute," says Robin. "Go me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it looks like I was right. And they all have Ethans too but most of them don't like them nearly as much as you like yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really? Why not? I mean, Ethan's very... Ethan, but I still like him fine..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One Ethan faked his death in order to provoke his Ripper into writing the local Bell an email," says Butterfly. "There's less peal-common-knowledge about the falling-outs the Ruperts had, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That definitely does sound like something that'd piss me off," she acknowledges.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Bell in question is now dating her Ripper, which apparently both Bells possessed of Ruperts instead find very funny."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Juliet moreso than Aegis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Are any of these other Kingfishers girls?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, just you. A lot of templates have strong but not perfectly consistent gender skews. There's one boy Bell, for instance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also, templates come in two kinds, which we don't know anything about except that Glass can see them and your kind is much more likely to be bisexual masochists. You're purple, we're green."

Permalink Mark Unread
...

Robin cracks up.

Meanwhile, in Peace:

How much have you heard about the new Joker and Bell? asks Sue of Aegis. War just told me something funny - well, Joker-funny, dunno if it'll translate - and I'm not sure how much context to bounce.
Permalink Mark Unread

I got Jane's gloss on it but I haven't been called in as, like, the expert-among-Bells-on-Jokers or anything, and I think Aether's taking point, so not much detail. What's funny?

Permalink Mark Unread
The thing that is funny:

Trouble (new Joker, previously known as Ophelia) skipped a phase on introducing his world's Bell to Glass. It felt like so; compare the feeling Sue and War had on deciding to step up to the Hegemony race, note similarities.

Trouble sent Robin (likely to be local Kingfisher) to check up on Butterfly and see how she was doing. Robin asked on Trouble's behalf if Butterfly wanted him to wait for her to emerge from her cocoon before commencing world-saving. Aether produced the sentence: 'If you let him go ahead without you my best guess is that you'll find whatever he comes up with to be stylistically displeasing, morally tolerable if more risk-tolerant than you'd like, and involve very little of you wearing a crown.'

Sue and War and the retirees and Harley all find this deeply hilarious - the other Jokers have dropped out of the link by now and haven't heard it yet. Trouble himself declined to share a reaction but the other linked Jokers suspect he is at least somewhat amused. The humour comes partly from phrasing, partly from wondering where Aether pulled this estimate out of, and partly from the dissonance between that image and how the central characteristic of Trouble's current phase seems to be its similarity to War's four years without Aegis. (The crown part fits, they do concede.)
Permalink Mark Unread

I don't quiiiite get the joke. I get why the phrasing's cute - I bet you it's intentionally cute. Aether probably hasn't been paying tons of attention to your Hegemony and your phasing though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, yeah, and I bet if she knew what we know she'd have said something else, that soooort of is what's funny? But whatever, Joker sense of humour is a mystery of the multiverse, we knew that one already. If Butterfly actually doesn't let Trouble help save his universe I feel kinda bad for him, though, all that— (wordless reiteration of the commonalities between Trouble's and Sue's respective decisions: a strong sense of it being time to get down to business, the deliberate choice to take it upon oneself to do things about things) —and nowhere to put it. We can probably find him something else to do if he still has the itch after the dust settles, I guess.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jane said they did not have a great working relationship beforehand. I can't imagine it being bad enough that she wouldn't, say, take coins from him, but I don't know how bad it gets, so maybe even after her self-reconstruction project she will not want him involved?

Permalink Mark Unread

We'll think of something. He's not gonna argue with her if she says she doesn't want him doing anything. Might move out of the universe, though, depending - he's got a girlfriend he doesn't wanna leave behind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anybody we know?

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably an alt of Zeus, Trouble figures.

Permalink Mark Unread

What's his side on why things got this unpleasant between him and Butterfly in the first place?

Permalink Mark Unread
Sue asks.

He was - he was a really early phase, he says. Of what seems like our most fragile cluster. And she's got whatever problems you get when you're a Bell whose planet is infested with mind-controlling alien brain parasites? And she scared him a little even before they found out about the brain parasites, and then it just... he couldn't handle stuff the way she wanted him to, and neither of them really knew how to handle each other, and it got to be kind of a mess.
Permalink Mark Unread

She scared him?

Permalink Mark Unread
They had this conversation about what she'd do with hypothetical magic powers, way early on, and she said some things that came off like... I'm not sure how to put it into words.

But he doesn't have to: he shows her Trouble's memory of the conversation, Trouble's resigned hypothetical fear at his new friend's avowed willingness to rid the world of pain even if not everyone would be okay without it. (Trouble is used to being in love with people who would do terrible things to him if they had a reason that looked good to them; Trouble is also in love with Ethan.)
Permalink Mark Unread

Mm. This looks like a mess.

Permalink Mark Unread

No shit, Sue agrees. I feel bad for both of 'em.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe him jumping phases will help, but I'm sort of worried she's too put off at this point.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sucks for them. Well, more for him on this one, she's not gonna be heartbroken if she decides she can't stand him.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll look at those of us conspicuously attached to Jokers and sigh about it, but yeah, not heartbreak.

Permalink Mark Unread

You doing anything important or can I come be conspicuously attached to you?

Permalink Mark Unread

If you mean 'lend me added consequence' come now, if you mean 'make out' wait sixty seconds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sixty seconds it is.
