fair maiden!
Permalink Mark Unread
Sir* Arel of Keltema has heard there is a dragon nearby who has recently captured a maiden passing fair. Arel enjoys both maidens passing fair and the rescue thereof; thus, his course of action is obvious. He goes to rescue her! His trusty steed carries him swiftly to the dragon's mountain lair. His trusty cat sits in his lap while they travel. It's a good arrangement all around.

Once the lair is reached, Ari stands proudly and shouts traditional challenges. "Foul beast! I hear tell you have kidnapped a fair maiden! Release her or suffer my wrath!"

Another knight* pokes his head out the entrance to the cave. "Dragon's not home," he says. "Neither's the princess. I think she's gone to visit the neighbors or something, I'm waiting. Did you want this one particularly? I don't mind letting you go first when they're back."

*actually
Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. "Well, I'm not attached, but I'm told she's passing fair etcetera. It'd be very nice of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sure. I was just passing through anyway and didn't want her to languish."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw. You're nice! What's your name? I'm Arel, you can call me Ar if you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jann. Of Raxwell. Nice to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you too. I'm guessing you're an actual knight, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. School, sword on the shoulders, the whole deal. Are you not? This may present a problem if you're not a knight or a prince and you rescue a princess and then have to hash something out with her parents."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I'm not officially a knight, but it doesn't seem to make much difference to the dragons, they all think I am. And parents don't necessarily have to get involved, it's just a little bit of rescuing etcetera. Or just rescuing, if she'd rather."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you bypass the parents you're probably in good shape."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, what makes you willing to give up your shot at a maiden passing fair etcetera? Do you already have someone back home, maiden or otherwise?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not right now, but I usually don't have too much trouble even sans heroic rescues. Actually, the only person I've ever rescued was my cousin. My male cousin who was taken by a very nearsighted dragon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's amazing. Personally I like rescuing because it lets me be heroic and woo ladies at the same time. Though really, it'd be nice if there were more nearsighted dragons around. I'd love to rescue a prince some time for variety's sake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My cousin's attached to a duke, and I don't know of anybody else with his nearsighted carrying-off problem, but best of luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah well. I'll have to make do with non-rescue wooing. You wouldn't happen to be woo-receptive, would you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems like that would be slightly awkward what with us waiting for a dragon and a princess," Jann points out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just like to check, is all. And in case the princess is non-receptive, it'd be nice to have someone around to aim at. And you're nice, and very pretty, and I don't know that I've ever been with a knight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you just have a checklist with an empty box next to 'knight' in your back pocket I can point you to one of my friends who's generally keener on boys than I am, but, eh, if we both strike out with the princess you could talk me into killing some time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I wouldn't object to a referral, but you're nice and you're here and you seem to have just issued me a challenge. Unless you haven't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not a challenge, really. I lean very much to girls. When there are no girls to be had I get less picky, that's all. You're very cute but do not appear to be a girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. Well, we'll see about this princess. And I may take that referral. Have I mentioned you're very nice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have! It's very gratifying."

Permalink Mark Unread
"You're delightful."

Ari enters the cave and sits and removes his trusty cat from where he has been lurking in his shirt. The cat meows sarcastically. "No. Oh- Jann, this is Leo." Leo meows, again sarcastically. "No, Leo."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi, Leo. You a witch?" asks Jann.

Permalink Mark Unread
Ari makes a vague hand gesture. "Ish. Enough for catspeak and some other little stuff."

Leo meows. "He says hello." Leo meows again. "No."
Permalink Mark Unread

"What incorrect thing does he keep saying?"

Permalink Mark Unread
"The first few were just, uh, comments to me. The most recent was that you 'smell like a woman'. He's used to not being translated on that kind of thing."

Leo meows again. "He'd like to clarify that he would still have said you smell like a woman if he were used to being translated."
Permalink Mark Unread

"I have never been accused of having this problem before. Maybe it runs in the family."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm pretty sure it doesn't even mean anything, he just likes cattish insults. I don't think you smell womanly, for what it's worth. Not that there's anything wrong with that, women smell lovely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not offended."

Permalink Mark Unread
Leo nods in cattish approval. He headbutts Ivan in search of pets.

"He likes that you're not offended. He's going to take it as carte blanche to insult you more, in a loving way."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Feel free to neglect translations. My cousin's cat is politer. I think. He isn't a witch, so he's guessing, albeit usually in a way that gets her to nod."

Permalink Mark Unread
"I didn't know that cats came in polite. For Leo the insults are a loving thing."

Leo meows belligerently. "You're seriously going to argue that you're polite?" Meow. "Oh. He expresses doubt that any cat with pride could be polite."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, like I said, I can't really be sure about Cath."

Permalink Mark Unread

Leo finds this satisfactory. Headbutting continues.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jann pets him.

Permalink Mark Unread
Leo happily curls up on him and begins purring.

Ari, lacking further avenues of conversation, performs a dwarfy magic thing and gets a lump of stone to play with. He attempts a bird!
Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that a witch thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! Picked it up from a dwarf I met. As I said, I'm not particularly a witch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. I don't know much about magic except that I should not touch strange carpets if I don't know what they do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got taken for an unexpected ride?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, my cousin unexpectedly turned me into a rabbit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who puts a shapeshifting enchantment on a carpet?"
Permalink Mark Unread

"An unpleasant witch. Already taken care of by clever children, I believe, but the carpet wound up in my uncle's treasury. Fortunately I turned back when I went out under a new moon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's considerate of it, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is. My cousin and my best friend both tried it recreationally later. They were very fluffy."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Aw. I bet you were all adorable bunnies. Wonder what I'd look like as a bunny..."

Leo meows. "Well, yes, that, but would I be cute."
Permalink Mark Unread

"It seemed to generate pretty cute bunnies. Glynn was about eighty percent floof, practically spherical. He couldn't see until I braided his fur."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Braiding bunnies!" Ari beams delightedly.

He tries to turn his nascent bird into a bunny. Possibly one with braids.
Permalink Mark Unread

"It was adorable. And much less alarming than when it happened to me, since we were expecting it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. I might have to find this carpet of bunny and try it, at some point. Likely with Leo out of the room." Meow. "Of course I doubt your self-control. I've known you for years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ducal castle of Raxwell, not to be confused with Ferdinandia," says Jann.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I was likely to confuse the two. They don't sound very similar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're right next to each other and used to be the same kingdom," explains Jann.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. I'm sure it would've been very embarrassing to go to one expecting the other, then. Thank you for the tip. Are the two on good terms?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. The duke of one's dating the prince of the other, and with any luck they can go back to being one kingdom soon."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Everything you touch turns adorable! I don't believe this!"

Leo meows and mimes a hairball. "Shut up, Leo."
Permalink Mark Unread

"I did actually set them up, so I can't demur credit for that one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're delightful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ari returns to work on his braided bunny! Leo exits Jann's lap to nap on Ari's head.

Permalink Mark Unread
That is fine with Jann.

The princess comes home. She does this in advance of her dragon.

"Uh, hi," she says.

"Hi!" says Jann. "Is your dragon expected soon?"

"Xorech'll be back any minute. Uh, look, this is probably very awkward, but even if one... or both?... of you defeat Xorech, I have a girlfriend back home, so..."

"Ah," says Jann. "Ah well."

"I mean I really want to go back to her so if it wouldn't be too much trouble for one or both of you to defeat Xorech anyway I would really appreciate it."

Jann looks at Arel. "I mean, I will still fight your dragon for you, but he was first in line."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I'll do it. How much defeating is called for? I'd hate to vanquish him excessively if he's only doing it for form's sake."

Permalink Mark Unread
"He doesn't like my cooking, he'll probably call it your fight if you stub his claw," says the princess. "Don't overdo it, or he'll step up his game on principle."

"I'll just go back down that way a bit in case it goes pear-shaped, shall I?" says Jann, and he heads down the path away from the cave entrance.
Permalink Mark Unread

"Dragons these days are never properly attached to their maidens. Very disappointing for someone who wants a good fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you feel like provoking him I can hardly stop you," says the princess.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh. It feels unsporting. I'll let him half-ass it if he likes."

Permalink Mark Unread
The princess shrugs and goes inside to wait.

The dragon is along presently.

"Are you a knight?" he asks. "You smell only mostly like a knight. If you're here for my princess you should be warned that she has a girlfriend."
Permalink Mark Unread

"I am, in fact, mostly a knight! I'm here to rescue your princess so that she can be returned to said girlfriend. And defeat you in the process."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, yes, very well," says Xorech, and he attacks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ari dodges his first attack, to all appearances by sheer luck, and spins into an enormously powerful kick to the dragon's side. He almost presses the attack, but then remembers that he's not supposed to be fighting, and hops back into a resting stance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ow!" objects Xorech, and he swipes a claw at Ari, disgruntled.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ari jumps out of the way, and the claw finds itself trapped in the suddenly liquid stone of the cave, which is suddenly not liquid again! (Dwarf magic, Ari loves dwarf magic.) He takes the opportunity to snap a kick down on the dragon's arm while it's not available to savage him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is cheating," says Xorech, and he mutters a dragon spell to free his claw. (Meanwhile, his tail is free to swat his assailant.)

Permalink Mark Unread
Ack!

"Hey, I said I'm only mostly a knight! The rest is various magic." He demonstratively pulls a long warhammer out of his sleeve and uses it to bash Xorech in the side. (Close to the spot where he kicked, but not close enough for Arel's liking. He needs to get some more practice in on his larger target strategy.)
Permalink Mark Unread

The dragon gets his claw out of the rock. "Cheating!" he snarls, and then there is fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fire! Unpleasant! But not particularly deadly, just sort of blistery and unhappy for his sleeves. (Well-enchanted armor is a must for any magic-knight.) Ari thwacks Xorech reprovingly upside the jaw.

Permalink Mark Unread

This cuts off the stream of fire, but the dragon has his claws all available again now. Pounce.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is shaping up to be a delightful fight. Ari rolls backwards and hefts a boulder over his head, hurling it at the dragon. And another, for good measure.

Permalink Mark Unread

The dragon ducks one and bats away the other and goes in for a bite.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ari leaps into the air, over the bite, and lands on Xorech's head! There, he begins industriously punching at the dragon's skull. (He's not likely to do much real damage, but it's certainly unpleasant.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! This is unorthodox ow knight behavior!" says Xorech, tossing his head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am an unorthodox knight!" cackles Ari, as he rides Xorech's head like the proverbial mechanical bull. "Give in, fiend!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Xorech slams the top of his head into the side of the mountain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Arel is no longer on top of Xorech's head.

He pops out of the crater cheerfully. "'Tis but a scratch!"
Permalink Mark Unread
Xorech makes a halfhearted attempt to toast him again, then throws up his forefeet in exasperation. "I don't have time for this! Take her and get out of my sight." And he trundles back into his cave.

The princess steps out presently, having already packed a bag.
Permalink Mark Unread
"Huzzah! Victory is ours!" Ari hops down onto the mountain path and performs a small dance.

"Jann, the dragon's been defeated, we can bring Princess- princess, back to her girlfriend etcetera," he calls once he has concluded his victory jig.
Permalink Mark Unread
"Lisatoline," the princess introduces herself. "Of Sathem-by-the-Mountains, do you know where that is?"

"Oh, yeah," says Jann, "that's not far out of my way at all."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent. Lead the way, then! I... may need to find my horse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you not bring a spare horse when you go rescuing?" says Jann. "Also, where's your cat gotten to?"

Permalink Mark Unread
"An excellent question! Probably with the horse." Ari says cheerfully as he begins the search for his steed. "She's intelligent enough to stay in the area I put her when I'm fighting something, but she scares easily, so there's some looking involved. Aha! There you are."

He finds her under a tree, moderately spooked but mostly unharmed. Leo appears to have been comforting her by being very soft and fluffy at her. "Trusty steed and trusty cat. We must be off! We're returning Princess Lisatoline to Somethingorother by the Mountains."

Leo rolls his eyes, but allows Arel to mount his trusty steed.
Permalink Mark Unread
"Sathem by the Mountains," Lisatoline says, getting on Jann's spare horse with Jann's help.

"We'll want to bear north," says Jann, and he takes point.
Permalink Mark Unread

Ari follows cheerfully. "I don't tend to keep track of place names so much. Sorry if I cause offense or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did you hear where I was being held captive to begin with if you didn't even know where I'm a princess of?" asks Lisatoline.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone or other said, and I quote, 'a maiden passing fair has been captured by a dragon,' end quote. I asked around about local dragons and found out about that guy. I wonder if he'd spar with me sometime? I don't have enough dragon sparring companions."

Permalink Mark Unread
"I couldn't begin to guess," says Lisatoline.

"Do you," says Jann, "have any dragon sparring companions?"
Permalink Mark Unread

"One. She's, uh... agreeable? Likes smashing me into things and doesn't mind getting smashed in turn, which goes well with sparring. Haven't seen her in a while, though, I'm rusty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh," says Jann. "Sounds handy, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's fun! I need to visit her lair. She kidnapped a prince for me once, it was hilarious. He was very confused about the whole affair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How obliging of her. Did things work out with the prince?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It did! He was very sweet once I'd rescued him and explained the situation."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Lucky, that."

"I do apologize for any inconvenience related to my having a girlfriend," says Lisatoline, politely but insincerely.

"It's all right, really," says Jann.
Permalink Mark Unread

"You've given me an excellent opportunity to try to seduce Jann," notes Arel. "Really, I should be thanking you."

Permalink Mark Unread
"You aren't going to have to try very hard, I explained this to you," Jann says. "Unavailable princess means available Jann."

"Oh," giggles Lisatoline.
Permalink Mark Unread

"I hadn't realized it was quite as binary as all that. I hope you won't object to a bit of seduction."

Permalink Mark Unread
"It won't put me off or anything."

"This is adorable," says Lisatoline.

"Thanks!"
Permalink Mark Unread

Arel preens. Leo meows in disgust.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which cracks Jann up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leo hops from Arel's horse to Jann's and perches on the princess, who he hopes may be less disgustingly cute.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello there," says Lisatoline. Scritch scritch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leo is appreciative of scritching, and of this princess. He purrs at an astonishing volume, considering his size.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lisatoline goes on petting him while the line of horses continues towards her home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, home appears.

"We've brought your princess back!" calls Arel.
Permalink Mark Unread
The residents of this castle are very pleased to have their princess back. Lisatoline does all the necessary smoothing-over of the confusion generated by her having been rescued by apparently two knights and not planning to marry either one of them.

"My next stop is the Caves of Fire and Night," says Jann, "if you want to go with me at least until we pass someplace comfortable and private."
Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never been! Are the caves fun? Also, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never been either, I just need something in them," says Jann, consulting his map and turning his horse with a last wave to Lisatoline.

Permalink Mark Unread
Arel waves with the hand not containing a Leo.

"Ah. What d'you need from them? Lost artifact, prophesy, natural resource of some kind..."
Permalink Mark Unread

"Water of Life. Turns people from stone back into... not... stone."

Permalink Mark Unread

Arel winces. "Eesh. Sounds unpleasant. I might get some of that in case of emergencies. I'm guessing you have a specific case, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My dad's been stone since before I was born."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh jeez. Sorry about that, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never met him, I don't much feel the lack, but yeah, it's about time I brought home some Water of Life, what with being a knight now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good a time as any. My helping won't mess with some kind of prophesy or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, there's no prophecy about his recovery. There was one about the turning into stone in the first place, but that's over with now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, good. D'you mind my tagging along for some of the water myself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't mind, but one thing you do need to know is that you do not touch the pretty dipper. This is the sort of thing they cover in knight school, you have to use the plain tin dipper or you'll turn to stone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. Makes sense! Do we provide unlucky dipper-users with water from the proper dipper? Seems only polite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's the plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, lead on. I'm all excited for these caves now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know how long it'll take to find the Water of Life once we've found the caves," says Jann. "Could be a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, there are ways to pass the time. Conversation. Artistic pursuits. Less artistic pursuits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is true."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Look, it's not as though I'm not amenable, but you may find yourself disappointed by my level of enthusiasm if you're planning less artistic pursuits as a primary form of entertainment for a medium-sized amount of time, I don't want you noticing this at some more awkward moment and being all upset."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't worry, I'm easily entertained by any number of things. The caves themselves are likely to be interesting, I've never met a cave I didn't like. I won't be upset about it."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Okay, good."

And now they are out of Sathem-by-the-Mountains and are instead amongst those mountains that said kingdom is by. Jann consults his map occasionally.
Permalink Mark Unread

Ari follows cheerfully! He pets Leo, who is asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread
They do not find the entrance to the Caves of Fire and Night on this day. Night falls and they are in a little nook of a valley.

"Cozy," comments Jann, and he gets off his primary horse.
