welcome back to days of old
we summed this thread up as 'ellie potter time travel momcest' in the conceptual stages
Permalink Mark Unread

One of the best things about being an Unspeakable, Ellie often thought to herself, was that you weren't expected to do much speaking, public or otherwise. You were, in fact, expected to strictly limit your interaction with the outside world outside your duties. Ellie's all right with that. She saved Britain from a Dark Lord when she was a year old and again when she was seventeen. She's had all she can stomach of the public eye.

Still, she thought as the fourth time-turner exploded just above her head (and where had they all even come from?), it might have been nice to have some help within shouting distance.

The world around her goes white-

Permalink Mark Unread

And resolves into -

Very much not the Department of Mysteries. ...Actually this looks like Hogwarts, though it's not a room she's been in. There's bookshelves, though, and it looks like an extension of the library.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's also a single student on the only chair in sight, who immediately stands and draws her wand. "Who - ? - How did you get here?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

It's been a while and she was older when Ellie saw her last but- "Mum?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who are you?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

"My name is Ellie."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did you get here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was an- incident. With a ritual of summoning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Must be pretty powerful, to get through Hogwarts' wards," she says lightly, after a moment. She still hasn't put her wand away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie still hasn't drawn hers. Either of them.

"Is that where we are? I don't recognize this room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh.

"Can't say my memories of this place are entirely positive. Wasn't planning on coming back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh."

Pause.

"I'm Lily. We should probably tell Headmaster Dumbledore about this."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie makes a face. "I'm sure he'll know what to do. He always seems to. And hey, maybe he won't even kill me this time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wh... at?

Permalink Mark Unread

"To be slightly fairer, he didn't do the deed personally. My death was just the final step in the last plan of his I participated in. I don't know if he foresaw my subsequent resurrection, but he was dead himself by that point so I am uninclined to give him any credit if so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I now have additional questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a bit of a long story. Are you going to try to hex me if I make myself a chair?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great." Her wand drops into her hand out of her sleeve and with a few economical motions conjures up a comfortable chair to sit in.

"So did you want to start with specific questions or should I just start talking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Start talking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll forgive me if I am a little out of practice."

"I was born in 1980. Britain was under siege by a Dark Lord calling himself Voldemort and had been for some ten years. There was a prophecy that a child would be born who could defeat him, and my parents and I fit the description. They went into hiding, but Voldemort found them a little more than a year later. He attacked the house and- I was the only survivor. They called me the Girl Who Lived and credited me with Voldemort's defeat. Which was absurd, of course. But I didn't find all that out until I got my letter for Hogwarts, ten years later. Dumbledore shuffled me off to live with some Muggle relatives who were, shall we say, less than enthused by the idea."

"Over the course of my first few years of study, through various misadventures, it became clear that Voldemort had in fact survived the night he killed my parents as well. I'm not sure when Dumbledore put the pieces together, but he didn't tell me about the mechanism until much later. All I knew at the time was that Voldemort existed in some kind of wraith-like state, subsisting off dark rituals, possession, and unicorn blood. At the end of my fourth year, he kidnapped me to use my blood in ritual to resurrect himself to a new body. He succeeded. We fought to a draw and I managed to escape. Of course, the wizarding world did not want to believe their boogeyman was back, so I was generally disbelieved until the following year, when his attacks started back up in earnest."

"It was then that Dumbledore told me what he had learned of Voldemort's survival. There is a Dark object called a horcrux, which is created by murder and anchors a piece of the wizard's soul to this world. Voldemort had created seven of these, and by chance, I had found and destroyed one during the early misadventures. Dumbledore had found another but been caught by one of the traps laid to protect it, a slow-acting withering curse. Reluctantly, he began teaching me what I would know to find and deal with the others. Apparently he still believed in the prophecy. At the end of that school year, before we had begun to search for the remaining horcruxes in earnest, Voldemort staged an attack on Hogwarts. Dumbledore died. That summer, Voldemort openly conquered the Ministry and took control of magical Britain."

"I didn't return to school. Instead, with a few allies, I began hunting down the other horcruxes. It took us most of the year, scratching up old history and dodging his hunters. And I began to get the feeling that seven was the wrong number. I was experiencing- flashes, visions, of what Voldemort was doing or seeing in moments of heightened emotions, even through my Occlumency barriers. Dumbledore, I recalled, had been unaccountably relieved when he learned I had already been practicing that art when it came up in the context of the beginning of the hunt. There was one obvious reason that Voldemort and I might be connected, given the way he had been sprinkling bits of his soul around."

"I don't know for sure how Dumbledore planned to dispose of the horcrux that resided in me, but the only things that work to destroy one are basilisk venom, fiendfyre, and the Killing Curse. I was not likely to survive any of those. In the end, it came down to another fight between Voldemort and I, after all his other horcruxes had been dealt with. He believed in the prophecy too, you see. 'Either must die at the hands of the other'. He hit me with a Killing Curse. His horcrux died, but I didn't. I got back up and blasted his head off his shoulders."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...So you're from the future?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's currently 1976."

Permalink Mark Unread

That would make her... fifth year? Maybe sixth, depending on what month it is.

"About thirty years in the future, then. Unless something weirder is going on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, unless this is a stable timeloop, this is pretty unlikely to be true timetravel. I'm unsure if you'd consider multiple universes 'weirder.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stable loops are the only possible ones, Gleisse's Second Law. But thirty years is past the mathematical singularity, so Gleisse's Laws don't necessarily apply. And the Lily Evans of my past would not have let things play out the way they did if she knew about it in advance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could have been planning to Obliviate me," she points out. "Since I'm apparently your mother, the lack of an impact on your timeline from this means the loop question can't be solved by my death - and quite frankly Gleisse's reasoning in the Second Law is full of shit. The core argument that unstable timeloops are impossible is that they would by their nature destroy the universe, and any timeloop occurring past the point of the mathematical singularity would be inherently unstable; that's merely an argument that they haven't happened yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

Damn, she was hoping to gloss over the 'mum' bit.

"Obliviating you would be the responsible thing to do," Ellie acknowledges. "But I don't care much for the spell. Anyway, saying that 'impossible' is not the same as 'hasn't happened yet' is a distinction without a difference when the phenomenon in question would destroy the universe. If you did instantiate an unstable loop, no one would be around to appreciate your hard work after the fact. And consider the context in which Gleisse was writing; if they framed it your way and the Witch of Weltenburg heard that version of the theory, Bavaria would have had a bigger problem than a decade of flat beers and rivers flowing backwards."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a reason to exercise caution and go slowly," she points out, "If you're messing with things on this scale anyways. Plus, that's also a reason not to publish certain works widely."

(This might be illuminating as to why Ellie has found absolutely zero documentation of whatever the fuck Lily did when Voldemort came for her. Even Dumbledore's best reasoning after the fact doesn't quite match Ellie's actual experiences.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that sounds about right for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You got to know me even with my death?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You left some journals behind but- it was more in the shape of what was left out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That does sound like me, especially with Vol-dick and his asshead supporters in the mix."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't think they ever found anything of yours, so there's that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not risking notes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though that habit was a little inconvenient for me personally, when I was trying to work out what the limits of what you'd done were."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it didn't prove critical, in the end."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Would've been dumb for me to set things up so they'd only go right if you figured everything out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That, I'll thank you for."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny smug smile. "Though I'll be disappointed in myself if I don't do better this time around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll have more help," she says. "Since I'm here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though I would prefer to work more directly, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be better to not let things go another five years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should start with the horcruxes. There should be at least one in Hogwarts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are they?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The diadem of Ravenclaw, the cup of Hufflepuff, the locket of Slytherin. The ring of the Gaunts. A diary he had when he was at school. His snake familiar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which one do you think is in Hogwarts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The diadem. It should be in the lost-and-found version of the Room of Requirement. The locket and the ring were both hidden in particular places elsewhere. I'm not sure where the cup and the diary would be at this time, they were only turned up after his followers had made arrangements after his death, but there might be a trail to chase down working from that end."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll ask Ms. Reynolds - don't know if she's still around in your time, she's the Defense TA, and she's great. Plus one of Vol-dick's lieutenants is doing this weird flirt-fighting with her and might spill something."

"Also, do you mean the Come and Go Room? That's the one we're in right now, so we'd have to duck out then back in for the room of hidden things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, this room then. I don't know a Reynolds, but the TA position had almost as much turnover as the professorship."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - What happened with the professorship?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The position is cursed. Should be by now already..."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - The History position is cursed. ...Here, at least. We've had the same Defense teacher the entire time I've been here, but there's a new History professor every year."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. Well, that's worrisome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's evidence you're from a different universe, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. But it calls in to question how much of my knowledge is applicable here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as magic works the same, you'll have a leg up in those areas. And we can compare notes on the rest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing worth doing is ever easy, even in alternate realities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least not on this scale."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it goes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

Out and back in, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

That would be the best way to get started.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll let Ellie summon the new room.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's been a while, but she still has the trick of it.

Back and forth, back and forth, lost and found, lost and found, lost and found.

Permalink Mark Unread

The door reforms!

The room beyond is pretty clearly the same lost and found, only mildly changed from Ellie's day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, no harm in trying. Accio Ravenclaw's diadem?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nope! Though it's possibly warded against that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, it didn't work the last time either.

"We'll have to search it out. Last time it was on top of an old training dummy, next to a broken cabinet." She conjures an image for Lily. "It may also radiate an unnerving aura of evil, but people's sensitivity to that sort of thing can vary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right." Time to start looking, then. Fortunately, Lily's spent a decent amount of time in this version of the Room...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Send up sparks if you find anything." Most efficient to split up and search. Ellie's not holding her breath to find it first, despite having found it in a different world. She's never gotten the impression the Room likes her that much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure enough, Ellie sees golden sparks from across the room before she finds anything of major note.

Permalink Mark Unread

Promising. She rejoins Lily.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's standing in front of the wardrobe, which does indeed still (or already) have the bust and circlet on it. "This what we're looking for? It's definitely got an aura of some kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the Diadem, yeah." She casts a few identification charms. "And it looks like it is possessed. Don't touch it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not dumb."

"Killing Curse should work, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There can be a slight hypnotic/compulsive effect. Best dealt with by firm reminder."

"Yeah, that's the least dramatic way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not getting through my Occlumency." Shrug, and she points her wand firmly at the Diadem. Casually: "Avada Kedavra." A brilliant green light lashes out. The Diadem flares - and begins to burn. A dark mist rises above it, screams fading as it dies.

Permalink Mark Unread

"One down."

Permalink Mark Unread

Six to go, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

That's the theory.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know for sure how many he'd made at this point? - And we should try to verify that other things are the same in this world..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least the diary, the cup, and the ring. Most likely the locket as well, it's definitely in place by 1978. And yeah, that would be a good idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Relics of the Founders, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hufflepuff's cup and Slytherin's locket. The diary was his own, and the ring belonged to the Gaunt family, which he's connected to through his mother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did he ever use a relic from Gryffindor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope. Probably because the choices were Sorting Hat, which is too well-guarded, and the Sword of Gryffindor, which is hidden and also goblin-make. I'm not sure a horcrux would actually take on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be worth double checking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just to be sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should go talk to Fay - even before Dumbledore, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will leave it to you to make introductions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Good to go now?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie doesn't have anything else to do here.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads the way, deftly avoiding trafficked hallways - which involves taking out a very familiar piece of paper.

Lily, apparently, currently has a hold of the Marauder's Map.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Putting that to better use than its creators would be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And enjoying James Potter begging me to use it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure I needed that image."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk. "Only unsure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a little margin for error since you're not my actual mother."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And James is currently sporting a somewhat different look than usual... She let me turn her into a - very pretty - girl last time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How... inventive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely worth the lecture from Professor McGonagall. Though I'd honestly been expecting James to resist me a bit more... But she's a very good girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oookay. Yep. Firmly separating the concept of 'parents' and the Lily Evans in front of her. No problem at all.

"I understand that sort of compatibility is desirable in a relationship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's been - nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never pursued a school days romance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any romance at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I joined the Unspeakables almost right after, so no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being an Unspeakable sounds interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't talk about it." Smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Pity, that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is in the name. But I liked the anonymity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anonymity is often useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More restful than useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Your life attracted a lot of attention and fame, didn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It did. But they wanted the idea of me, not the real thing. I was never- what they expected. Sometimes people resented that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

"I don't blame you- her. My mother. She didn't mean for it to turn out like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still - we'll do better this time, and I'll help you avoid any limelight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I appreciate that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

They reach Fay Reynolds' rooms soon after that.

Permalink Mark Unread

The door is answered by a young woman! Ellie has definitely never seen her before in her life. "Who's this - ?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can we come in first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." She steps inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

And in!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie follows them inside. "Do you want the short version or the long version?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Start with the short version."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Short version, Ellie Potter, pleased to meet you. I'm an alternate universe timetravelling version of Lily's daughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eyebrow raise. "And the long version?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie gives Fay the same summary of her life and times that Lily got.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Interesting. Also, it definitely presents an opportunity... She'll look into the horcruxes, though it might take a while to verify things - also she's unsure how much risk in terms of 'chatting up dubious information sources' that Ellie is comfortable with.

Permalink Mark Unread

None of Ellie's contacts would, uh, remember her. She's confident in her ability to handle threats to her person; the main risk would be in leaking that they're aware of his horcruxes to Voldemort.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My most dubious but also best contact is a Death Eater in the Inner Circle, actually... But I don't think she'll flip on me or let anything slip - she hasn't yet. ...And she might suspect about the horcruxes already, some of the things she's told me line up with that well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That does sound very dubious. I'm not personally acquainted with many Death Eaters, but my impression is that they are not generally very trustworthy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can try sounding her out more subtly first..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would be more comfortable if she was confirmed to be willing to flip on him entirely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Hard to say. She isn't loyal, but - she really doesn't like magical Britain. Though maybe I can talk her into running away to the muggle world with me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you think that would work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's worth a shot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right," she agrees. "Up to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's also a lot of other questions on what to do... The horcruxes seem a likely priority - we'll want to also find you a place to stay - and start figuring out what other actionable intelligence you have..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And figure out how well my history matches yours and what the key differences are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay's pretty aware of current goings on, so they can do some of that comparison now? Also compare major players, since that'll matter a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie's on board with that. She can list known Death Eaters and members of the Order of the Phoenix that survived.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has clarifying questions about a couple of people - especially Andromeda, Narcissa, and Bellatrix.

Permalink Mark Unread

Andromeda Black was married to a muggleborn and had disowned her family. As far as Ellie knows, she stayed out of the fight. Narcissa married Lucius Malfoy, but was more practical than ideological when it came to supporting him. Bellatrix Black married one of the Lestrange twins and went to Azkaban for the decade and a half before Voldemort's return for torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom into insanity.

Permalink Mark Unread

Those sound... Wrong-ish. Especially the part about Bellatrix - Fay is positive she prefers women, and also honestly pretty confident that she would not be married to either Lestrange for more than a month, tops, before widowing herself, even if she somehow ended up marrying him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, not everything is the same, as the Defense/History divide shows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah... What were they - like, beyond just the outline of their actions?

Permalink Mark Unread

That's not really something Ellie can speak to. Her main interaction was at wandpoint.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, excessive violence does sound pretty much like her - no offense to your girlfriend, Fay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not my girlfriend," she mutters, incredibly unconvincingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily rolls her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Girlfriend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We had one date - which was before the war started."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Wait, really? Okay then when exactly is she leaking shit to you, because if she isn't your mysterious source then I will eat my pointy hat. Like I'd kind of just assumed alcohol was involved in this, there's no way she's intentionally spying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...She gets chatty when fighting. Usually she moves on to gossip after a bit of flirting. Also, how do you keep figuring things out like this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Raw talent. Obviously." Is that sarcasm in her voice? It's probably sarcasm.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lily Evans is not to be underestimated."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug smug smug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You would be the expert on that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"More like the proof, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A plausible theory."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny smile.

Still: "But, yes, Bella is my 'mystery source' - but she's also not by any stretch a loyal Death Eater, and she's looked into things for me before... And given she knows I'm using the intelligence she gives me, I don't think it's fair to say she's unintentionally spying, even though I still wouldn't call her a double agent or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still, the horcruxes are probably the most sensitive and dangerous information that could get leaked. How's her Occlumency?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm the one who taught her Occlumency, back when she was still a student here. She can keep me out entirely if she feels like it, and she can also craft false memories to a satisfactory level - by which I mean no one in the British Isles would be able to tell upon formal extended examination, but she would have a chance of getting caught if international experts were brought in. She can evade and break Obliviation to a similarly satisfactory level, and she can bury her core memories and true thoughts deeply enough to at least eventually subvert most forms of invasive mind control. And if she hasn't kept up her training, then I will be very disappointed in her."

"I don't know if she'd hold up against sustained attempts, but most things that would weaken her Occlumantic protections - like prolonged exposure to Dementors, actually - would also make any memories retrieved from her suspect. She'd be more vulnerable to mind control, but Voldemort shouldn't be able to mind control her into telling him things, since the only methods that should actually work would have to suppress or destroy her memories and several key personality traits."

"Voldemort is an incredibly skilled Leglimens, so - it's not without risk, but Bella will be able to stand up to any routine or idle checks, and most more intense checks. If Voldemort goes far enough to break her protections, then he'd already suspect she's betrayed him - and as far as I can tell, she's useful enough to him than even he would probably hesitate until he's certain. He's let murder attempts from her slide before."

"And, honestly, Lily is the only person I'd bet on keeping things totally to herself no matter what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As strong an endorsement as I could hope for, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be careful, regardless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do need the information regardless. So."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Initial caution won't hurt - though I'll reach out to her as soon as I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess I'll need to figure out something to do in the meantime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could figure out where you'll be staying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We do need a new History professor..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"First of all, I'm not going to take a teaching job in the middle of the year. Second, I'm not going to take a position that's been cursed until the curse is definitively broken. Third, I only have an OWL in History."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd still be more qualified than the last guy..." she mutters. And then, more loudly: "I can help you study up over the summer. Plus I bet Fay can break the curse. Or we can just be very efficient at killing Voldemort."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm flattered by your faith in me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see. I was thinking I could go do some bounty hunting in South America or something and use the cash to kickstart a new identity."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can maybe get you a good false identity faster than that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I really will need to figure out something to occupy myself here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The History TA position isn't cursed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're very invested in getting me to stay at this school."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to keep you close."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll... think about it. While I deal with the ring and the locket."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'll involve leaving the castle, so I suppose you won't be joining me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww... "School does end soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would prefer to move while we can be sure of having the informational advantage, even just with regards to my existence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think of it as free time to refine your pitch. And/or study program."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh.

"Do you need anything from me to start on an identity?" she asks Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Preferences on origin and qualifications, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Cursebreaker' might be closest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Do you want to still be from Britain?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If possible. Easier for me than trying to fake a different accent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll need to have been out of the country from age ten to twelve at least to avoid being on any lists for Hogwarts... But your accent would have settled by then, so it's excusable... Can you claim to be home schooled?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did always prefer independent study."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Any opinion on blood status?" She makes a minor face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That it's no better than muggle racism."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! "I like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's your credit for being so likeable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not something I hear often."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then few others have taste."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Lily is glaring daggers at Fay in a way that's possibly supposed to communicate 'I saw her first.')

Permalink Mark Unread

How oddly flattering.

"Perhaps it's something in the water here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or me and Lily are just special."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose I couldn't say without a larger sample size."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I agree with Fay on this one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Outvoted, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The way it works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't need to ask anyone else, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I'll keep all my nosy little questions and nagging senses of doubt tucked away in a box where they can't get out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not exactly scientific of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No social science study ever replicates, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we're more of a case study?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"An empirical demonstration."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'm sure James shares my taste."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You would be the expert."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do still need to meet her..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure I will, at some point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sooner rather than later, hopefully."

Permalink Mark Unread

"After the initial tasks are done, perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speaking of which, I should get started. Do you want to arrange a rendezvous for the new identity?" she asks Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure." There's several options, though her availability will open up a lot in the summer...

Permalink Mark Unread

Depends how long she thinks she'll need to get it done. Ellie won't exactly have a mailing address they can keep in contact through until this gets sorted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Two way mirrors or similar are an option.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she has a set going spare.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can scrounge something basic up, and enchant it to be a bit more functional - it won't last very long, but it'll be enough to get them to the summer.

Permalink Mark Unread

That works for Ellie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once that's taken care of, would Lily care to escort Ellie out of the castle?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd be delighted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent. If they get to the Forest, Ellie can make her way from there.

Permalink Mark Unread

The map and cloak are both very helpful for that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Useful tools.

"Guess I'll see if the thestrals like me first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, they like me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean, they like Fay more? But I can see more of them than usual, and they follow me around when I'm in the Forest, and they'll let me touch them - Fay keeps warning me that they're dangerous to ride, even the younger ones, but I don't think they'll harm me. I'm not scared of them, and it's not like I'm close to dying or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you... always been able to see them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a wobbly motion with her hand. "I never saw any when I was like, really little? But - I don't know. I started seeing the darker ones kinda just out of the corner of my eye when I was like, six I guess? A bit after I started really understanding that death exists. I could see all the ones that pull the carriages by the time I came to Hogwarts, though those are the dark ones anyways, and I can see a good chunk of even the light grey ones now. - I can actually see them better under the cloak, even the really pale ones, which was the biggest clue honestly that this isn't a normal invisibility cloak. I've been trying to use it to investigate the thestrals more, but..." Shrug. "They're a mysterious bunch, even when they like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Old magic is like that. And thestrals are about as old as it gets. Not that they really relate to time in a way that's, uh, entirely comprehensible."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "Death doesn't either, so that checks out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're pretty fascinating, all the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder if these ones will recognize me..." Ellie murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Hm?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have, ah, another version of that cloak. It helped me- It was part of why I made friends with the flock in my home."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a suspicious look on her face briefly before it smoothes out. "Why would they still recognize you here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Eldritch beings beyond the petty limitations of time and space? Maybe they get together and chat once in a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a bit of a fairy tale thing to happen. But, well. Thestrals are closer to fairy tales than most things."

Permalink Mark Unread

Serious nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe that's enough of a clue for Lily to put things together. Ellie... doesn't want to say it outright. Not yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't say whatever she's thinking. Instead, after a few moments of silence - "We should be close."

Permalink Mark Unread

They are, in fact, under the eaves of the Forbidden Forest, and there's familiar dark shapes moving towards them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess they smelled us coming."

Permalink Mark Unread

An exceptionally pale nightmare of a ¿horse? leads the pack. "Hello, Master," it whispers somewhere beyond speech.

Permalink Mark Unread

Still counts even though there's obviously a separate collection of relics in this world. Good to know.

"Hey there," Ellie says, with a sideways glance at Lily to see if she heard it talking.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't seem to have.

Permalink Mark Unread

The thestral laughs with a sound like a death rattle. "You have wandered from where you usually walk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not intentionally, but here I am. Figured I might as well start taking care of this world's Riddle. I was hoping I might get a ride."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily raises an eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, Master."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I appreciate it."

To Lily, "Looks like I've got a ride."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can speak to them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I've, uh, been closer to Death than most."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - The Horcrux removal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd recommend looking into alternative methods if you want to speak with thestrals."

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a laugh out of her. "Like what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure how much of a hint I should give... Half the fun's in the mystery, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But sharing's also fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie pauses and the humor drains from her expression. "For all that you've done and counterfactually will do," she says in the level tone of the Unspeakable giving a report, "I don't know you all that well and so I can't tell you how to walk your path. Or if I should. Intent matters with old magics. You've seen it's possible. That's all I can give for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs. "You and Dumbledore both," she grumbles under her breath, though she doesn't say it very loud, and she doesn't seem that upset. "I said once that I'd be a better Dark Lord than the current one, and now it's all 'Sorry, I won't answer your questions about the Philosopher's Stone until I trust you to not commit genocide with this information.'" She rolls her eyes. "You can ask him and Fay about me though, I guess. And I'll prove to you I'm trustworthy, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not about trust, Ellie doesn't say. It's about how some things can't be taught, only learned.

"I'll look forward to that, then," she says with a little smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I'll look forward to seeing you again, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No genocides while I'm busy, all right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Innocent face. "Of course not - that'd be very inefficient. Though I might lay the groundwork to run for Minister..." It's very unclear if she's joking or not. "Part of being a better Dark Lord is better considered methods, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just be careful of the line where you tip over into just being a Lord instead. Or don't, something something transcend entirely the shackles of petty morality."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being celebrated for generations does sound nice..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever floats your boat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And leads to the greatest success."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. Speaking of which, I should be off..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll see you in the summer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'm sure you'll feel free to bother Fay for her mirror if the mood strikes," Ellie says, moving over to mount one of the thestrals.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That goes without saying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Until next time, Lily." And she takes off in a flutter of deathly wings.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets Fay know that Ellie left successfully, then goes to find James.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does currently possess the Marauders' Map, so that's not exactly an onerous task.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey cutie. Mind if I borrow you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lily!"

"Don't you already own Snuffles?" snickers Sirius. "Not much need for borrowing, is there."

James elbows her friend. "Shut it, Padfoot." She starts packing up her Charms notes. "Just a sec."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm, true enough..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blush!

"Okay, I'm ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good girl. Now come along." She turns to lead James out of the common room.

Permalink Mark Unread

James follows!

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes her good girl to the Room of Requirement (it seems ideal for secure conversations like this).

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's going on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She explains in as much detail as she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So... a future time-traveler alternate universe version of our, uh, hypothetical daughter is here to fix the Dark Lord problem. And it sounds like you think she's kind of hot?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah." She pulls James in tighter, then rolls a bit so her girlfriend is on top of her - shielding her from the world. (Something she only does when feeling vulnerable, James has noticed.) The Room gave them a small, defensible space with low lights; perfect for Lily to hide her face in her girlfriend's shoulder.

"And... It's... A lot. There's a lot I'm thinking about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keeping that big brain busy, huh?" Forehead kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"...It's easier to think Ellie's kinda hot than to think about - that me having a kid. And like - why? In the middle of a war?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to try to answer that question or do you want to be distracted?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hm, good question.

"Distraction and then answer when I can think about it more cleanly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case, James can think of several ways girls can be distracting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very good girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's doing her best to be!

Permalink Mark Unread

And her best is exceptional.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully this helps Lily get to a point where she's able to put her thoughts in proper order.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks it does...

Permalink Mark Unread

James is here when she's ready to talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I've never thought of myself as - someone who'd have kids someday."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

"...I think I'd like to. Someday."

Permalink Mark Unread

Blink blink.

"...You'd be a good parent." Unsaid: Lily absolutely wouldn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, give my girlfriend some credit. She can do anything she decides she wants to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slight smile. "Maybe I could grow into it," she concedes. "But - still. 1980... That's really not far away. And the war was still on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You probably had a plan of some kind, if there is a prophecy and you found out about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah."

"And - I might be the kind of person to try to use my kid for a plan." She doesn't super want to be, but, well. "Especially since it sounds like there was no Fay in that world - I probably would've badgered Dumbledore into teaching me instead, and he's... I don't know. Fay's sneaky, but in an ambush way, and she's really firm on..." She waves a hand vaguely. "Moral stuff. Dumbledore's - like me sometimes, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

James ponders a world where Lily didn't have Fay to teach her, and decides a firm hug is the best response.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems to be, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno about what the other you was thinking," she says, "but- We can't change them, right? What we can do is better than them. Maybe we could take care of Ellie. And if we ever have a kid ourselves, we won't leave them alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle! "Sounds good." And, softly: "I think I would like to have kids with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"You're a closet romantic," she accuses, giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A secret only the best girls get to learn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm honored to be counted among those."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yay kisses!

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily has the best girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best girl hopes her girlfriend is feeling better.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am." Another kiss. "Thank you, best girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. I hope I can meet Ellie next time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll make sure of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One to look forward to." Another kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

James is always happy to be kissed by Lily.

"Speaking of looking forwards... Can we have the Map back for next weekend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you ask very nicely."

Permalink Mark Unread

James can be nice!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then her best girl can have the Map back.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's greatly appreciated.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need the Cloak as well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not for this one, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright; just let me know if that changes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss! "Good luck with your mischief."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know we don't need luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seize every advantage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good girl." Hair pet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

Permalink Mark Unread

More hair pets.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no, they're trapped forever now. Can't get up, too cozy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then how will James ever manage her mischief?

Permalink Mark Unread

An unfortunate consequence of having a girlfriend. Oh well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely Lily's best girl can exercise discipline even in the face of the greatest of temptations...

Permalink Mark Unread

Sorry, she's spending all her discipline on exams.

Permalink Mark Unread

So there's limits?

Permalink Mark Unread

This may come as a surprise to Lily, but some people do have those.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll need to work on that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh-huh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which Lily can help with training, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

She always does.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's a very dedicated girlfriend.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the many things James appreciates about her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Must be a long list.

Permalink Mark Unread

Longer than she is tall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very long, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmm, she can afford a bit more distraction before getting back to the grind of daily life...

Permalink Mark Unread

James is only too happy to oblige.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie, meanwhile, deals with the two known horcruxes. She cuts through Voldemort's protections around the Gaunt house with ease, slashing the fascination jinx and wasting curse off the ring before exorcising the fragment of spirit with a Killing Curse. She pries the Resurrection Stone out of its setting and pockets it before stashing the ring back under the floorboards. She'll hang onto it in case she finds a use for it.

Then, to the cave by the seaside. She actually has a plan for this one, concocted over several quiet lunchtimes of idle musing a year or two ago. It goes a little like this: step one, get inside. Step two,

Permalink Mark Unread

BURN IT ALL WITH FIRE

Permalink Mark Unread

Step three, find a nice restaurant for dinner.

And, she supposes, step four, wait for her new allies to get in contact.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay reaches out with her new identity soon enough, plus a request - "Lily would like to meet you when you're ready. Hogsmeade work for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's fine. When's the next free weekend for her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"For you? Next weekend, I bet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Next weekend it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll let her know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. Any word from your contact?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Somewhat - she says she'll find me at some point to talk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. Let me know if I need to kill anyone or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will do."

Permalink Mark Unread

And the next Saturday, Ellie will apparate to Hogsmeade to meet Lily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily's there early.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey there yourself." She gestures at James. "This is my girlfriend, James."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You too. Lily's told me all about you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All that she knows."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A score I'm planning to increase."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, Fay intimated that you were quite eager to make this meeting happen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We didn't get to speak for nearly long enough, last time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've all day now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." Is their location private?

Permalink Mark Unread

The street? Not so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they'll need to find somewhere to talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Table at the Three Broomsticks?

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe a booth in a quiet corner?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, that works.

Permalink Mark Unread

Makes talking a bit easier.

Permalink Mark Unread

And James can treat to a round of drinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

So. Any specific questions?

Permalink Mark Unread

A small variety, really - she honestly mostly wants to chat for now. Figure out what questions she even has.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie wouldn't mind the chance to get to know them better. What classes are they taking?

Permalink Mark Unread

She started in Arithmancy, Ancient Egyptian, Government, and Literature for her electives, though she finished her OWLs for all her classes early. She's continued into NEWTs for Arithmancy and Ancient Egyptian, and tested into Ancient Runes and Latin - she's actually caught up to fifth year for those, plus fourth year Divination. She fully tested out of Astronomy and Old English, going straight to sitting her OWL. Of her core classes, she's kept up with Charms and Herbology at the NEWT level - and she's got an independent study research project into the history of Ancient Egyptian mortuary rituals. She's hoping to finish her Herbology NEWT this year, Potions next - if she can knock out both NEWTs before seventh year, it'd be convenient to use Hogwarts' resources for further study - and she'll probably just replace Latin with Ancient Greek next year - she's also in a book club (mostly for muggleborn students, getting caught up on magical literature) -

(This is a stupidly heavy courseload - normal fifth years have their six core classes, plus two to four electives. Sixth and seventh years usually only take three or four NEWTs, with a capstone project in seventh year, no extra classes. Lily's at three NEWTs (at least one at double speed), three standard classes, and what sure sounds like a capstone, all in fifth year.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Obviously Lily doesn't believe in sitting idle. Ellie's surprised she has time to spare for this meeting. Her own courseload wasn't two-thirds of that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not needing to study much beyond just reading books helps a lot, and her parents indulge her reading habits. She actually learned her languages (plus the non-magical aspects of Astronomy, which is most of the actual workload, and the advanced math parts of Arithmancy) over the summer, through muggle books, courses, or tutors. Plus, everything but practical work is perfectly learnable on summer break, and she can even use a calculator for Arithmancy. (She may or may not have a calculator stashed somewhere off Hogwarts grounds to make doing her Arithmancy homework a bit easier.)

And she did most of her project over last summer, too - nearly everything about Ancient Egyptian rituals is actually known to muggles; they see it as evidence of religion, though, not magic. And they're the ones who discovered most of it - something like ninety percent of Lily's contributions to that field in the magical world will probably consist of sending letters to muggle archeologists and subscribing to the appropriate journals. Plus being aggressively polite with goblins, who also already know a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

The real trick is that Lily is just, like, insanely smart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Guilty as charged.

Permalink Mark Unread

That does tend to help, in Ellie's experience.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You come off as fairly insanely smart yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose. Never had much trouble picking things up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Why didn't you take advantage of that in school, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Too much else going on, most years. I didn't have nearly the support you did. Couldn't use my summers the same way you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Ah."

"I'm... Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "It is what it is. My post-graduate experience has been just as educational, if less formalized."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good. And you should have time to study here - speaking of, actually..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's her 'I'm about to go mad with power' look," James stage-whispers to Ellie. "Run while you still can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You like it when I'm mad with power. Don't pretend otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair warning for the new victim," she says virtuously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Always chivalrous."

Permalink Mark Unread

She mimes a little bow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheek kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, they're actually pretty cute together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty cute in general.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you got distracted from what you were going to say," she prompts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been thinking up a proper History curriculum for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," Ellie says. "That."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I still think you'd be good at it. And you're prepared to spend more time at Hogwarts now, right? Easy access to us would be a boon, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's still the minor matter of the curse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Won't affect the History TA. And you can cheat it by having other commitments preventing you from staying on more than a year - one of our more clever History professors had a baby and started her maternity leave right before OWLs - and it doesn't trigger for teachers who start after Yule."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little early to be talking about children, don't you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle blush! "You're the one who put it on my mind," she teases, sneaking a glance at James.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who also blushes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough. I still don't know about starting midyear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll give you more time. And you can work as a TA if you'd rather."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A TA position seems like a more achievable goal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you can achieve full professor if you apply yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your faith is touching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't believe me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm just adjusting to your level of ambition."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's an entirely appropriate amount!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know I'm right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still, I would prefer not jump straight into the deep end. In this case."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Fair enough. But you'd be open to easing into it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then that's good enough to start on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what's your plan look like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Ellie want the full curriculum?

Permalink Mark Unread

The real question is, is there any stopping Lily at this point?

Permalink Mark Unread

Might as well lay it out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope, no stopping her.

She actually does have a pretty well considered outline! (She'd be a significantly better professor than Binns, at least.)

Permalink Mark Unread

A talkative sparrow would be a better teacher than Binns.

Ellie does appreciate the outline. It's a very approachable study plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. And Lily already has all the books needed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Already read all of them, has she?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, what does Ellie take her for?

Permalink Mark Unread

She didn't want to assume before kidnapping them forever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily wouldn't offer if she minded.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Ellie will take that as general evidence of the sincerity of any future offers Lily might make.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Future offers, huh. How exciting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Depends on what Ellie's anticipating.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's keeping her options open.

Permalink Mark Unread

Likely a good move, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's what she figured.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most of the rest of what she has to discuss is mundane...

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie doesn't have anything more important scheduled.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Lily is delighted to keep talking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie is happy to listen.

Permalink Mark Unread

And surely she has some things to say herself?

Permalink Mark Unread

She is recovering the skill of holding a conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily's up for helping her practice; talking to her is nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Guess that makes this a successful date.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Eee!)

Very much so - enough they should do it again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, Ellie might have to schedule around all this studying she has to do now...

Permalink Mark Unread

They can combine the chats with tutoring, a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully that won't inculcate any bad habits for when Ellie becomes a teacher.

Permalink Mark Unread

That mightn't be so bad.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good habits only - promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So the student/teacher roleplay stays private?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Small blush!

"Certain things should be behind closed doors, don't you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Agreed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no, more blush!

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is a stimulating image."

Permalink Mark Unread

Possibly a bit inapproprite to get too far into here, even in a booth in a dark corner...

Permalink Mark Unread

They can put a pin in it for later.

Permalink Mark Unread

For when Ellie's back at Hogwarts.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's lots of hidden places they can explore.

Permalink Mark Unread

Plenty of privacy.

Permalink Mark Unread

One thing the school's got going for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Especially for those with the Marauder's Map.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is pretty cool, isn't it?

Permalink Mark Unread

A masterpiece.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thanks!

Permalink Mark Unread

Quick kiss! "My clever girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadly this is too public to fully show her appreciation...

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie will let them go back to the castle, if they'd rather.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to keep talking to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I'm more attractive than your girlfriend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can kiss my girlfriend anytime I want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I''m a time-limited commodity?"

Permalink Mark Unread

For now, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie will say she doesn't mind being an object of desire.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, because she very much is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Preen!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute!!

Permalink Mark Unread

She really is. Lily has good taste.

Permalink Mark Unread

First James, then Ellie... Lily would say she has the best taste.

Permalink Mark Unread

Two for two is a compelling record.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no that was a compliment from Ellie for James now it is her turn to blush.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not exactly an outcome she objects to!

Permalink Mark Unread

Truly, a master manipulator.

Permalink Mark Unread

She usually gets her way, sooner or later.

Permalink Mark Unread

As it should be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Even with Ellie playing hard to get.

Permalink Mark Unread

If it wasn't a challenge, it wouldn't be fun, would it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Point...

Permalink Mark Unread

So really, it's a favor Ellie is doing her here. Drawing out the game and all.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she wants to tell herself that.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does make her feel better.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which is of critical importance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, thanks for prioritizing Ellie's happiness appropriately.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes care of what's hers.

Permalink Mark Unread

And very well, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

James would know.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she does.

Permalink Mark Unread

(...Nnnf they really need to get to where they can drag Ellie off into proper privacy...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh heh heh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mean. (But cute.)

Permalink Mark Unread

This is what she's in for.

Permalink Mark Unread

She likes it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is pretty convenient how that works out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie's not complaining.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Today has been fun, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

They should do it again sometime.

Permalink Mark Unread

When's their next day free?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll give Ellie her schedule. (She and James can actually slip away most weekends, but it's easier some days than others.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Shouldn't be too hard to schedule something soon, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's already looking forward to it.

But - she'll let Ellie get back to her business for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for the books."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Until next time." And Ellie will take her leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Next time rolls around soon enough, and Ellie shows back up to meet Lily and James. She was thinking that they might want to do something a little more active than chat in a pub this go-round.

Permalink Mark Unread

What does she have in mind?

Permalink Mark Unread

Have a bit of fun showing off magic to each other. Stretch their wings, as it were.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie might need to pick the location.

Permalink Mark Unread

How do they feel about an off-grounds excursion?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds like mischief.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can manage mischief.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then, if they'll both take her hands for a Side-Along?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Ellie will whisk them away to a nice stretch of deserted coastline, with plenty of open space.

Permalink Mark Unread

"More private than a pub, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the idea. Don't want to give away all my tricks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm honored to receive your tricks, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet they're impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I don't know. I hear you're supposed to be an animagus yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She'll show you hers, since you're so graciously showing us yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very considerate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who should go first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could flip for it," James suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's got a coin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heads James, tails Ellie?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds good to her.

She flips the coin, landing on heads.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess that's me up first, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

And she shifts form, into a large, fluffy white-furred wolf.

Permalink Mark Unread

As adorable handsome as ever. (Does Ellie want to pet the fluff?)

Permalink Mark Unread

She kind of does, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As Snuffles' owner - go ahead. She likes head pats especially."

Permalink Mark Unread

Don't mind if she does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yesssss yesss right there behind the ears very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're very cute together.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's plenty of James to go around if Lily wants to get in on this petting action, by the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

She absolutely will.

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy woof.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back scritches, to complement Ellie's ear scritches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no, a concerted attack. James shall perish of happiness.

Permalink Mark Unread

And what about belly rubs - ?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah! She is slain (helpfully rolling over in the process to facilitate more rubs).

Permalink Mark Unread

Very adorable, for a dead girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pantgrin!

Permalink Mark Unread

Is Ellie having fun, too?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh yeah.

But maybe she should take a turn to show off as well?

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily wouldn't object.

Permalink Mark Unread

All right, Ellie. What do you have?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully they're not disappointed she's not as fluffy...

Permalink Mark Unread

On the other hand, she's big.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Woah -

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes a few moments for her brain to come back online, but: very attractive. And impressive. But also attractive.

Permalink Mark Unread

No kidding.

"...Wait but I thought you couldn't have a magical animal as your animagus form, how are you doing that??"

Permalink Mark Unread

Dragonish shrug. (She wants to see if they can guess.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Thoughtful hum. "Self transfiguration from a similar base, possibly? Though combining that seamlessly with the Animagus transformation... As I said. Impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No kidding."

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to human shape for talking.

"Yeah, Lily's pretty much got it. My actual animagus form is a raptor, dinosaur. But I met a dragon who thought I was a baby who hadn't grown into her wings yet, so I decided to figure out how to do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can talk to dragons?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Turns out they speak Parseltongue."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice." She has further dragon questions!! (Dragons are very cool.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie has further dragon answers! Dragons are very cool!

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she breathe fire? Ooh, is she strong enough to take them for a flight?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes and yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

- !!!

Permalink Mark Unread

So that's a yes to flying?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes!!

Permalink Mark Unread

They won't be able to communicate easily, unless Lily or James has a talent for legilimency.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, good. It'll be easier to establish a connection before she shifts. Ellie can let her through her Occlumency barriers if she knocks politely.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can do that!

"Though, uh, I wouldn't recommend trying to reach all the way back to me - I'm a natural Occlumens and apparently vaguely terrifying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Noted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got a lot of practice at legilimency, though." Mostly on James.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She has a lot of fun with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Almost as much as you do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

"When you're ready, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's ready now - and she slips gently into the outskirts of Ellie's mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's quiet, like a frozen pond on a cold winter's night. Ellie's thoughts sparkle like stars overhead.

Permalink Mark Unread

'You have a beautiful mind.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Amusement. 'How kind of you to say.'

There's a ripple in the depths of the water, and-

Permalink Mark Unread

Dragon.

Permalink Mark Unread

This doesn't get any less amazing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, climb on.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does so, offering James a hand up behind her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dragon time dragon time dragon time!

Permalink Mark Unread

And away they go!

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Swooooosh.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrieks with delighted laughter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fun!!

Permalink Mark Unread

So glad they're enjoying themselves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can fly around for a while, get them a good view of the area.

Eventually, she comes back to land.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily hops off once Ellie's on the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

As does James.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone enjoy themselves?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was so cool!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh heh heh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seriously impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, I worked hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hard working and intelligent... A perfect combination."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug smug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not to mention cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That goes without saying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Worth saying anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Feel free to say it more often, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will do, cutie."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee!

Permalink Mark Unread

Illegally cute. (Lily really wants to kiss her...)

Permalink Mark Unread

If she's still paying attention to Ellie's mindscape, the stars don't seem opposed to the idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnn what to do -

Soft, light kiss?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Hhhhhhhhot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can James join in?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems only fair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Score!

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely hot.

Mmm, though now Lily wants to kiss Ellie again... James can kneel at their feet while she waits for her next turn, how about?

Permalink Mark Unread

That works for James.

Permalink Mark Unread

It works for Ellie, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though probably they shouldn't go past kissing yet... This is more than good enough, though. Lily adores Ellie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie likes that feeling.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Lily likes that Ellie likes that feeling!

Permalink Mark Unread

One of those virtuous circles, huh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Infinite positive feedback loop.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite a pleasant way to pass the time.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a pity they can't do this forever.

Permalink Mark Unread

James, for one, could kneel here all day.

Permalink Mark Unread

They could stay out until close to curfew...

Permalink Mark Unread

If no one will miss them getting back from Hogsmeade?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, everyone's used to Lily keeping James to herself until late.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, it's not like Ellie had other plans.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then shall they continue?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

In this matter, Lily's wish is Ellie's command.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just the way she likes it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.
