Tabitha-No-Last-Name, young vampiress, is hungry. Not for blood, she ate a deer that morning, but rather for more conventional fare. So, she has picked a house without a decent home security system, and is now rummaging around their fridge. Upon finding some raspberry jam, bread, and margarine, she sets about making herself a sandwich.
The service seems a touch disorganized. The children run around freely, there's spontaneous dancing, and of course the choir picks up whenever the pastor pauses long enough. He takes this all in stride.
The kids drink up their "wine" and feel pretty cool. Since they can't tell the difference between grape juice and wine, no one corrects them.
Since they can't reliably distinguish grape juice sans blood from grape juice with blood in it, they don't show any signs that something has gone horribly wrong.
Stiles is sorely tempted to mockingly mimic the pastor at several points throughout the sermon but he heroically restrains himself to making faces about it to Tabitha and Zeke.
“So, do we follow one home?”
Follow one home they do. Running alongside a car without being seen is a fun game. Stiles wishes the kid would see them and not the parents, but human kids are dumb and don't notice things. He's glad he's not human anymore.
The child transforms. From there, it's not long before the house becomes a tableau of blood. The child runs rampant, destroying things and people with equal vigor.
The same process repeats itself in many homes across the town.
Stiles joins in! He thinks maybe there was some other kind of plan or something? He doesn't remember it though. Now they're done with the boring part. He wants Tabby and Zeke to come play, too, though- he looks up from one of their victim's shattered heads to see how they're doing.
Tabby is playfully taunting the little girl they’ve just inducted into the species.
Zeke meanwhile is slipping out to survey the wider carnage.
There's plenty to go around. Some of the newly-turned vampires have formed little hunting groups. They cut a swathe through the town, leaving no house untouched.
Others seem less focused on causing maximum damage. This one, for example, is hunched over outside her home.
She looks up at Zeke when he comes close enough for her heightened senses to detect him. Everything is louder and more intense- he's not food, though. She's still hungry after- all the blood inside- her face is covered in it but she wants more and she's not food so she needs to find-
She hisses in his general direction, but this doesn't get any more blood into her.
Zeke proceeds to nip out and grab a fleeing human off the street, throwing the woman at the girl.
She's on top of her in a flash. Moving is so easy now, it's freeing. She doesn't have to wear any more itchy dresses to church like daddy always makes her wear, she can just- move, and there's nothing in her way. This person's skin isn't in her way, because she wants the blood. The blood is on her face and warm in her mouth and it's delicious, better than anything she's ever tasted. Mommy would tell her to "be ladylike" but now she can just be like this.
She flashes a bloody smile at Zeke, not quite able to thank him because she's still hungry.
Stiles is herding a group of the newly-minted vampires to kill the people he thinks deserve it most. This doesn't perfectly accord with who he thinks is most delicious, but since the others aren't really listening to him he thinks they probably are just killing those. That's okay. He feels good even if they don't actually listen to him because he gets to tell them things. He wonders if Tabitha is watching.
She’s actually in the midst of the fray, enjoying the communal bloodlust.
Fine he'll kill some people himself. When he stops thinking, it's actually really fun.
Zeke is still following the blonde girl.
She's moving fluidly now, adjusting easily to her new body. She thinks something's wrong- but no, it's just that this one is harder to bite through- more meat in the way.
The next one tastes funny- she's not sure why- and the one after that is tasty, they're all tasty but maybe this is what good blood tastes like. She's starting to feel full, she knows, because she wants to find a safe place to lie down but there are no safe places because she's alone and then what if they take her food. She's lethargic but she can still move faster than she ever could before.
She looks for safe places.
"Hey girl," Zeke calls.
There’s someone there- she hisses, crouching into a ready stance. She can jump on him within seconds- he’s not trying to attack yet- he’s not food. She’s confused, but she doesn’t know what to do with that. She needs food and she needs to stay safe but she doesn’t think he can help with either of those. She wants to stay close to him- she doesn’t know if he can feed her.
The newly-turned vampire makes a break for it. She jumps over the strange person and tries to outrun him.
Zeke has been a vampire much longer, and he’s dealt with newborns before. He grabs the girl by the ankle.
She hisses at him ineffectually. She still doesn't know what he is but it's not food and it is nice. It's like being tucked in at night or like sitting by the campfire or like being on the boat with grandpa. She wants to bury herself in the comfortable feeling but it's just a feeling and she's caught. She could get free- she's stronger than him, she's stronger than everyone, she's the strongest most fastest thing in the whole world. She looks at him, waiting to see what he wants.
Zeke hugs the girl, patting her gently on the back. "Shh, there there."
