why are you my clarity
three souls and a whole lot more to sort out
Permalink Mark Unread

They hold her for observation for a week afterwards to check if she's stable. Her psychosis seems to have simply vanished, as if it were never there.

Sable Orchid comes to visit her occasionally, and helps the three of them pick names for themselves. There's December, of course, as she always was; and then there's the colder, analytical one - Lillian - and the one who keeps wanting to flirt - Violet. They work out a kind of peace between each other, a détente.

Despite all the poking and prodding of everyone involved, the exact nature of the strange event - the "star" - that happened during the procedure remains a mystery. What isn't a mystery is the looks that Sable keeps giving the three of them, the way her gaze lingers...

Violet wants so much to reach out and touch her, to kiss her, to have someone to replace the hole left by Jason - but Lillian and December hold her back. It's not healthy to run from one relationship into another. She's seen the chaos that can cause.

Still, it's nice to have someone that actually cares. She doesn't know if it's love, but... Sable keeps coming back, and her help with naming has been essential, and the way she holds her hand sometimes when she's making a point makes their collective heart race. It's not easy to stay smart and safe, but she tries. The hospital setting helps.

Combat school is... Lillian thinks it's reckless. Violet wants it so badly. And that leaves December to cast a deciding vote of "It'll probably be better than the fosters."

Soon it's the last day of observation. Despite themselves, they're kind of looking forward to seeing Sable again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Here she is now! She smiles winningly at them and walks up to their bed. "Today's the day, observation has ended, and I've come to spring you from your imprisonment."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet sits up in bed and favors Sable with a smile. "I've been waiting for this for... it feels like forever." She stretches her arms above her head. "I feel so much better. I still can't thank you enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You deserve it, Vi." She admires the stretch, then catches Violet's hand when her arms come back down, squeezing it encouragingly. "All three of you deserve this chance to be yourselves, and figure out who that is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet smiles, and squeezes Sable's hand. "Lily won't stop grousing about going to combat school, but she's outvoted, so we're just going to have to do our best together."

She looks deep into Sable's eyes. "I just want you to know that I really appreciate you coming here every day like this. I've never had... I guess a real friend like you before."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her posture shifts, just slightly. "It's really true that we all appreciate it," she continues, her voice a little rougher and less lilting. "The staff told us about how much you risked for the procedure, and... That's going above and beyond, honestly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then, suddenly, there's a moment of disorientation -

Permalink Mark Unread

A star burns and falls, flame wreathing it in some distant place, a world far, far away from her -

And then abruptly gutters out as her connection to it vanishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grabs after it instinctively, and instead -

Permalink Mark Unread

Something goes click in her brain.

SUPERHUMAN DESIRE (Medaka Box Abnormal) 100You always wanted to be special and that want was itself so strong that you really did become so. Whenever you are subjected to a procedure that will improve or beneficially alter you with a chance of injury to you, death or even just the procedure failing outright, it will instead have a guaranteed chance of success. Risky operations will always go off without a hitch, shoving an energy source into your own body will have it combine with you successfully if there was even the smallest chance of you not dying.
Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, what the fuck.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What the fuck was that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

You don't need to say it aloud, December, everyone in the room was already thinking it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins warmly, starts to respond, and then her eyes widen at the sudden event in the girls' souls.

"Wha—"

She trails off, following the connections as best she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head a bit to clear it, when the event ends. "That... was two different things, I think. One was a star like the one you girls grabbed during the procedure, but you couldn't catch it. And then, when you tried harder, you connected more clearly with the one from the procedure? I think it felt like it was giving you some kind of information about itself, but I couldn't tell what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me try that mental motion again."

Permalink Mark Unread

It pipes up again quite cheerfully.

"It's giving me like an information sheet. It says that... my want to be special was so strong that I really did become special, and that any procedure that could improve or beneficially alter me with some chance of injury, death or failure will instead... always succeed, so long as there's even the tiniest chance of my not dying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh." She tilts her head thoughtfully. "I guess that could explain the good luck in getting enough nurses and trainees in for me to drain and keep filling up your Auras, despite that being more than were supposed to even be on-call."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. There's some parts I don't understand - it says 'Medaka Box Abnormal, one hundred' - but it seems clear that it's a description of what's happened to me. A power that comes with its own manual?" She raises an eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs. "Not something I've ever seen before, but we can figure it out together."

She shakes her head. "What was I going to say before that happened? Oh! Right, I was gonna say that you kind of have to stay at Beacon for now. That or find some kind of Aura-requiring work. It's hard to feed an awakened Aura on a civilian budget."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tell me about it," Lily replies, thinking back to all her hospital meals. "I'll say one thing for this place, the food's better than I expected."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't wait to see all the facilities at Beacon though! Your team sounds really cool and I want to catch up as fast as I can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's get you out of here, then. I'll show you to your room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't miss it at all."

Violet gets the body up out of bed, then takes Sable's hand again.

"Lead on, noble Huntress."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles widely and leads the way out of the medical wing. On the way to the building where the first-year dorms are, in between pointing out various things on campus, she adds, "Professor Ozpin gave me temporary access to your guest room while you were in medical, just until you tag the door with your own scroll and it rekeys, so my girlfriends and the rest of our friends took the opportunity to get you some housewarming gifts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aaaaaawwwww, that's so sweet of them! I really appreciate the gesture. I guess I'll have to find something to do in return."

Girlfriends plural? Well, she'll set that aside for the moment...

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian distractedly fishes her own scroll out of her pocket. It's an older model, but loaded with a slate of custom apps December's pulled off CCTS.

"You said it'll lock to our scroll?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Just tap your scroll to it once I clear the existing settings. Oh! You'll need an Aura reader app."

She pulls out her scroll. "Here, I'll send you a link to the one I use. Team JSMN has been using it since before we came to Vale, and it's a bit more flexible than the basic one. It can keep track of the significant shifts in my Aura pool when I drain or refill people, and I think it should be able to adapt to tracking your Auras individually."

Tap tap flick tap flick, and then the scroll in Lillian's hand pings with a new message.

Permalink Mark Unread

December confirms the download and smiles.

"All your help and you're technical too? Some people might say you're too good to be true."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shrugs. "Despite everything that's happened, I find it easy to care about people. I wouldn't go that far, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles slyly. "Although it certainly is even easier when the people in question are beautiful and fascinating."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, are they being flirted with?

Well, if she thinks it's okay then Violet can give as good as she gets.

"Says the girl who saved all three of us before she even knew us. Maybe you should give some of that credit to yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Oh, you'll fit right in with the others. Maya especially is on my case to accept more credit for things."

She lets them into the dorm building and up they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet follows along, looking around at the sleek modern facilities. It's certainly different from what she's used to.

"If they have good taste enough to like you, I bet they're cool people as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I certainly think they're amazing. We've been a team, practically a family, for years. Dating for most of those. Somehow they put up with how easily I fall for people, too." She grins, laughs, and opens the door.

"Tada!", she exclaims, gesturing at the guest suite.

It features a desk, a chair, a closet, a bathroom, a few cabinets, and a bed. And that's all before getting into the gifts. There's a plate of cookies from Ruby, a small vase with flowers in their Aura colors from Weiss, a few books on basic Aura use from Blake, a set of hair care products from Yang. Jaune gave them a drive with some music on it, while Pyrrha contributed a roll of athletic tape for training. Nora gave a box of chocolates with a note that she'd have gotten Ren to make pancakes but didn't know when they'd be released from medical. Ren gave incense and a book on meditation to connect with one's Aura more deeply. Jade gave a book with an overview of different fighting styles and very basic advice on developing one's own. From Maya, they find a cozy blanket in a dark grey. Neopolitan gave a book of photos of different Huntresses and their unique outfits, along with a certificate for time sketching and brainstorming outfit ideas.

And finally there's two joint gifts. The first is from Pyrrha, Maya, and Jade, and offers time experimenting with different base weapons to see where their fighting styles are naturally drawn. the second is from Sable and Ruby, and promises to design a custom Huntress weapon based on the results of the practice session.

Permalink Mark Unread

Between the psychosis and the bizarre events with the stars and all the rest of it, this is still pretty much the most surprising thing that's ever happened to her.

She goes over to the bed, sits down heavily, and takes a moment to take in the whole tableful of gifts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow," she says softly. "This is... probably more gifts than I've ever gotten in my entire life up till now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable blinks for a moment. "Then your fosters were terrible and the teams are your family now. I mean, we didn't have a lot of gifts when it was just the four of us on our own in Mantle, but we still managed to do little things for each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't say that anything of the kind's ever happened to me. It's a little overwhelming."

She walks over to the table, picks up the blanket, and carefully wraps it around herself.

"... A custom weapon? Style training? Chocolates and cookies? There's so much..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, we like our sweets, across these three teams, so that explains that. As for the training, having an outfit that suits you improves Aura resonance and performance, and there's no way to know what kind of weapons you'll favor until you get to try different ones. As for the custom weapon, every Huntress needs a weapon that suits her personal fighting style, with both melee and ranged options available. I made team JSMN's myself, with Maya's help. Ruby made her weapon. We're probably the best weapon engineers across our three teams, so you're in good hands with us. We're not going to leave you without a weapon if we're planning to train you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm touched. I've never received anything handmade before, much less anything customized to what I want. That's..." She pauses. "It's personal in a way I've never been seen."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've never been seen," Lillian absently corrects.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, didn't mean to leave you out. I'm still getting used to this whole "three souls" thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's alright. We're all still learning.

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks up one of the cookies and takes a bite out of it, half-expecting it to be spiked with something.

It tastes great, though. It's not warm from the oven but it's clearly handmade, and by someone with a passion for the craft.

She chews and swallows.

"I think we're going to really like it here," she announces.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh good," she replies with a grin. "Everyone deserves to feel seen, and to have someplace they can feel at home. Especially you three."

She takes a look at the incense, gives a sniff, then her eyebrows shoot up a bit. "Oh, Ren gave you a pack of the good stuff. This never fails to improve a meditation."

She looks back over at them. "Any early guesses where you think your fighting style or weapon will wind up? It'll be a challenge to make something that complements all three of you, but that's what mechashift's for."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily comes forward.

"I think we would do best with a ranged weapon primarily, though Violet is saying she'd prefer a close-range one. We don't have specific preferences about what form - we never expected to get this far in the first place, to be quite frank. Something easy to learn, perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable hums thoughtfully, nodding. "Depending on what they are, we may be able to get three forms in. That should leave room for both a ranged and a close melee option, and one more besides."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we'll all have to think about it seriously. It's not a decision to be made lightly, by any stretch."

December takes another bite of the cookie, walks over to the bed and gently lays the blanket down on it. "For now I think settling in is most important. Getting the basics that any style would need down, exploring our Semblances... Theoretically we'd get three, right? That must be a unique advantage somehow."

She walks back to the table and picks up the music player with her free hand. "I wonder what's on this," she asks. "Would you like to listen together?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "I agree, it's something to take your time on. As for the Semblance question, yes, the three souls and three Auras with individual colors would tend to imply three Semblances. Discovering them will take time, but it'll be worth it."

Permalink Mark Unread

And then she grins wider. "Oh, I'd love to!" She sits down next to December, curious what Jaune picked out.

Permalink Mark Unread

December taps the player to her scroll, and lets it download.

"Looks like this will take a little bit," she says. "I really wonder what's on it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So Sable," Violet starts. "How did you end up in combat school, anyway? It sounds like there's a whole story there."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head and smiles bittersweetly. "Yeah, it really is." She sighs softly, her tail swishing a bit.

"Short version? For a variety of reasons, at age eleven we were all Lost Girls on the streets of Mantle. We claimed an abandoned warehouse, robbed a few places to buy food and bedding, acquired a scoundrel as an adoptive older brother, took jobs defending the Dust miners from Grimm and SDC strikebreakers, made a bunch of friends in low places, and eventually got convinced to come to Vale. A job we took after moving here convinced us that we needed better training, so we threw in for the Beacon entrance exams, and here we are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was right, that is quite the story! Defending strikers, huh? That's pretty worthy work. And I bet it pays less well than being a Huntress."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet, please do not imply that you think Sable is a sellout.

Permalink Mark Unread

What? I completely missed that. You overthink too much.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, but to a gang of thirteen-year-olds living in a warehouse, it was a king's ransom, even giving the miners a discount. We're still in touch with some of the friends we made, doing those jobs, and new friends they introduced us to."

She runs a hand through her hair, and scratches one of her violet-furred ears for a moment. "Some things stick with you, no matter how far you come afterward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that why you're so kind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

A soft smile crosses her face as she nods. "Kindness to each other is what brought our little family together in that Mantle warehouse. Kindness to the miners gave the people of Mantle hope — especially fellow Faunus — and introduced us to some... different opportunities. I try to bring kindness wherever I go."

Permalink Mark Unread

December ducks her head and nods. "That makes a lot of sense. I'm glad your life has... given you such a strong heart. I don't feel like it really did the same for me. Sometimes suffering is just suffering."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not to be too much of a downer, of course. Today should be a joyful day, no matter how skeptical I am of this whole 'training' thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

She finishes off her cookie, and smiles. "I guess I'll have to go through all the basics with you all. Train from the ground up. I'm pretty excited to try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, don't get me wrong. The suffering is just suffering. I just found ways to fit goodness in around the edges once we were all away from our shitty beginnings. I got lucky, and I was clever, but the suffering is not remotely what did it."

She shakes her head and smiles. "Yeah, training from the ground up will be fun. It's hard, but it's worthwhile, and you can find your own best path forward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The more I think about it, the more I feel like getting knocked around by you could be a real fun time." She winks, and picks up another cookie. "Want one of these? Sorry about the music taking forever to load, our scroll is kind of old."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will never turn down one of Ruby's cookies. Anyone who does has no taste." She accepts a cookie and grins. "And I am increasingly thinking that training you three is going to be particularly fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet picks up another cookie for herself. "Yeah, these aren't going to last long. And I'm definitely looking forward to that sparring session."

She checks the music player. "Ah, there, looks like it's downloaded." She scrolls through the list, looking at the new tracks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans close to Violet and looks as well, curious to see. It seems to consist of a mix of pop-punk and indie rock with female vocalists.1 "Oh, Jaune picked out some good tracks here!"

1 The Remnant equivalents of Paramore and Florence and the Machine.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, yeah. He has surprisingly good taste." December smiles and turns up the volume on her scroll a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable scoots closer, smiling warmly. No, she is not going to put her head on December's shoulder. No, do not put her head on the cute plural system's shoulder. Do not. But maybe? No.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable is kind of looking at her in an odd way but she has no idea what to make of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The scoot closer is nice, though.

She's not going to talk over the music. They can just listen together for a little while.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can. It's great.

...okay what if she lets herself try holding their hand, would that be okay?

No, they just got out of medical. They have had far too much traumatic crap recently, they do not need relationship pressure. What if they feel obligated or something, because she saved their souls? She didn't do it to get a date, she has three girlfriends already.

She does not hold their hand. Her hand is maybe resting on her own thigh, right next to them, but she does not actually hold their hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

A few songs pass.

Violet gets up again and turns the music down a little, then sits back down next to Sable.

"... So," she says. "What's this you said about having... girlfriends. Plural?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Even after it all I don't regret kissing Jason. Or the dresses.

There's a lesson in that, you know?

Permalink Mark Unread

... not that her heart isn't going a mile a minute or anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh," she grins, "Vi jumping in with the fun questions. So yes. I'm polyamorous. My whole team is polyamorous, and we're all dating each other. I don't know that I even know how to be monogamous. I'm pretty sure I've never actually experienced jealousy, and can't really comprehend what it feels like. I just... love people, and want to see them happy."

She makes a point to lock eyes with Violet and her headmates when she says "love people".

Permalink Mark Unread

She flushes, and winks back.

"I, ah... Polyamorous? I can guess at that from the roots... Many loves? Gosh, you have three girlfriends? How does that even work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of communication," she replies seriously. "The whole thing depends on talking to each other, making sure everyone gets time with everyone else, nobody feels left out, et cetera. Everyone knows when each other's date nights are, tries not to get in each other's way, makes a point to talk frankly if they think they're developing serious crushes on people, discuss whether the polycule is even hypothetically open to expansion. Things like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds complicated. But then, I guess we're no strangers to that." She smiles. "Are you this giving with all of them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head for a moment, recalling using her Aura to heal injuries, building custom weapons, stealing the parasol that would later become Hush, building an archery range in an empty lot near the warehouse for Jade...

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and nods. "Yep!'

Permalink Mark Unread

"You must be absolutely run off your feet between the three of them, then. When's the last time you took some time for yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet, the implication

Permalink Mark Unread

Shut up, I asked the question because I care, not because I want to imply that she should pick me up as a side piece. Seriously.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blinks. "Yesterday evening I ready a book? Once or twice a week we just have a cuddlepile? But honestly, there are a lot of ways that doing nice things with people I love is restorative time for me. Guess I'm just an extravert?" She shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that makes sense if you're that kind of person. I... don't really know what dating people seriously is like, you know? I did some stupid things about the soulstrain but that's hardly, uh, experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never had a serious relationship, but it feels like what you four have going on is pretty deep. What with being together for years and all."

Permalink Mark Unread

A gentle nod. "Yeah, it is. A deep lake still has a shallow shore, though. Are you interested to see how the water feels?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She flushes. "I... is that an invitation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian splutters in mindspace.

That wasn't supposed to actually work! Isn't she taken?

Permalink Mark Unread

You just don't have the touch, Violet thinks back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins daringly and quirks an eyebrow. "Do you want it to be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They flush.

"Um," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so? Lillian is a little uncertain about it but she's... just a little bit like that..."

She looks away. "You're sure you're not taken?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Taken versus available' isn't really how I work so much as 'can we fit you into the polycule as a whole'. It's... if I show up at dinner holding your hand, one of the other three will probably plan a get-to-know-you activity with you by the end of the day, and the whole team will just be actively Considering It for a while. And then, if my read on everyone is accurate, a few dates in one of them kisses one of you and unless things unexpectedly don't work out between you and one of them you find yourself basically adopted by the end of the month."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh..."

Lilian looks away, still a bit flushed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh okay. Okay. I, um. I accept? I'm sorry, I'm still no good at this..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well how about she celebrates that by kissing Violet softly on the lips and then holding her hand?

"Dunno, something about getting a look at your souls made it easy to fall for you pretty fast. Oops?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh gosh, her second kiss ever...

It's different than with Jason. Better, somehow.

She finds herself blushing a deep pink and looking down at the floor.

She squeezes Sable's hand a little.

"... something about getting saved and deluged with presents by a girl I hardly know... also makes it easy to care." She flashes a smile, then lools away again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and squeezes Violet's hand in return. "I can't really take credit for the presents. I just told our three teams about your situation and then it would've been harder to prevent a pile of suitewarming gifts at that point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, either way they're really appreciated..."

She squeezes Sable's hand again, as if reassuring herself it's solid.

Permalink Mark Unread

And distantly, another star flares and falls...

Only this time, it crashes down through the atmosphere and envelops Violet, December and Lillian entirely as it etches something onto their souls -

Permalink Mark Unread

And then it locks into place, part of them forever now.

-'The Eye' AR Windows (Eclipse Phase) 100These AR display windows match things in your field of vision to data from Firewall's databases, wikis, chat channels and forum posts - so if you happen to walk past a known trafficker of TITAN artifacts on the streets of Noctis, an AR window will flag them and display what The Eye knows about them. Unfortunately, The Eye is only good for things that Firewall knows about - new threats won't raise flags or have any data. In future worlds, The Eye AR windows tend to flag things in the databases or general awareness of groups with similar objectives to Firewall, but are fairly light on hard data - mostly something like "This individual is wanted for questioning by SHIELD and is considered armed and dangerous" or "This carving is a sign used by Thayan spies to mark meeting spots". You can dismiss the AR windows or keep them from appearing at any time. * Masking software can serve as a memetic filter with decent programming. * Windows can provide access to the information of any secretive organisation.
Permalink Mark Unread

When she returns to herself she's slumped awkwardly against Sable and is staring down into her lap.

She coughs and straightens herself, then gives Sable an awkward smile. "Sorry," she says quietly. Her gaze darts up towards her again, and -

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable is blinking herself clear of the star connecting as well. "Nothing to apologize for, Vi." And she has a little AR box overlaid in the air next to her head.

Sable Orchid

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Violet

Associations

Mantle's Marauders: Founding Member

A group of four amateur Huntresses dedicated to protecting disadvantaged citizens of Mantle from Grimm and societal oppression alike. Founded when the girls were barely thirteen, the group has since become closely associated with the Atlesian White Fang, as well as the Harmony faction of Vale's branch of the Fang since moving to Vale. This closeness is especially impressive, given that half the group's membership is Human. Became team JSMN of Beacon after joining the academy.

White Fang (Atlesian Branch): Associate, Honorary Member

The founding branch of the White Fang, this group frequently organizes defenses of striking SDC miners, in addition to their political activism and their less-than-legal activities. The group regularly raids SDC holdings, but tries to avoid bloodshed when feasible. They are known for taking more care to have solid justification for their assassinations than any other group — a task simplified by the corruption endemic in the Atlesian elite.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Harmony Faction):  Associate

Formed in reaction to the increasing violence of Adam Taurus's Radical faction, the Harmony faction prefers to work within the system wherever possible, though they will not hold back from violence if their hand is forced. The faction has been known to meet at Tukson's Book Trade, and was initially formed by Carnelian Tukson and Blake Belladonna, among other early leaders, with the notable assistance of the Marauders.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Radical Faction): Enemy

Formed around the increasingly genocidal beliefs of Adam Taurus, the group operates under the policy that the murder of Humans by Faunus is always justified. Can be counted upon to resort to violence first.

Semblance

Give and Take

Sable's Semblance allows nothing less than the bidirectional sharing of Aura through physical contact, or at one degree of remove through Heartstring. The sensation of sharing has an intensity that scales with the amount given or taken, and the valence of the feeling matches the valence of the subject's feelings toward Sable, modified somewhat by her feelings toward the subject. It is suspected that Sable is capable of direct manipulation of souls. Give and Take has been confirmed to be capable of direct soul manipulation, based on Sable's performance healing the three Misses Morning-Glory. This ability must be cultivated further, if opportunities present themselves.

Weapons

Heartstring

A dual-mode whip/saber with a cylindrical handle when stored, deploying the sword from one end and the whip from the other, with the grip reshaping to support either form. Contains a Dustcasting chamber in the handle, capable of Dustcasting through either form.

Sonder

An extremely high caliber revolver, using moon clips for quick reload, frequently loaded with Dust rounds, and capable of punching directly through lower-level Grimm.

"It's not like you chose for these things to knock you for a loop," she finishes with a grin. "What's this one do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uhhhhh..." Her gaze flicks through the air next to Sable's head. "Gives me an information overlay about you, apparently. There's like a half-dozen collapsibles, a whole file. I think that - it's kind of privacy-invadey, honestly? There's stuff in here about your time in Atlas and so on, I stopped reading after skimming the first dropdown."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her face stills. "Ah. I... Anything accurate in that file I would have told you sooner or later anyway, though some of it is not first date material by sane people's standards, if it's sufficiently in-depth. I'd have to tell you all of it eventually, if I wanted to have any hope of us working out."

She takes a breath, then nods. "You can read it, and ask me questions, though there may be things in there I would quite appreciate your discretion about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... okay. I won't read it if you don't want me to, you know? I... You saved our lives."

Permalink Mark Unread

She already said we could read it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Look, just because she says it doesn't mean she means it.

Permalink Mark Unread

I don't think she's the type to do that really.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are you girls really turning down the chance to read a TOP SECRET FILE about our POTENTIAL GIRLFRIEND? That's just fucking cool. I want to share it all with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh, guess December's the deciding vote.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you meant that, though," she says. "I'll read it. It can be our secret, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her eyes flick over as she starts reading.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles softly and nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"... Honestly there's nothing so bad in here, except that you were associated with a gang, which I already kind of knew. The White Fang, huh? I guess that just makes sense if you're a faunus who's striking. Did you know they assassinate people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

She winces slightly.

"Oof. The file does say they take time to justify that, but..." She shakes her head. "I hope you're able to find better friends here in Vale."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't say I'm disappointed in the friends I've had, but I get what you mean. There's a deeper story it sounds like the file doesn't cover, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. For all its text, it actually seems pretty superficial."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you want to hear more, just ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... well. I'd appreciate that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "So I guess the first question is how much you know about the conditions in and around SDC mines."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a lot. Not a lot of news about working conditions and the realities of it gets out of Atlas. I can guess it's bad, but I don't know how bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," she replies with a bit of disgusted frown at the SDC's practices, "they cover it up pretty hard. Atlas is basically owned by the corrupt corporations there, and the SDC is the worst of them. The conditions in the mines are blatantly unsafe, with frequent injuries among the mostly-Faunus miners. The one concession they make to safety concerns is hiring Huntsmen to keep the Grimm away from the mines. The second the miners strike, though, they pull those Hunstmen out and let the Grimm swarm the miners, drawn to the negativity. If the miners survive that, the SDC hires street gangs to break legs until the strike ends."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet winces.

"That's... if that's really true, then I can see why some people would resort to violence..."

She swallows. "It's all rhetoric about... Dust being vital to holding back the Grimm, and strikes depriving the nation of a vital strategic good on the network. I knew it was bullshit but that's a new low."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Maya's parents died in those mines. We've personally fought to defend strikes. The thugs they sent were trying to kill us, so I try not to beat myself up that some of them died in the attempt." She sighs harshly, shaking her head.

"And that's not even the worst thing happening in Atlas. There are 'scientists' working in black divisions of some of the corporations that abduct homeless Faunus from the crater as test subjects in dangerous experiments." She scowls. "I can't fault the White Fang for shutting those divisions down, even if the process is a bit bloody sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lillian winces.

It's like something out of a bad movie. Do we really trust her that that's true?

Permalink Mark Unread

She saved our life, Lillian.

Permalink Mark Unread

She could have done that for any number of reasons.

Permalink Mark Unread

I am not going to look at the woman who saved all three of our lives and gave us a body that fits us at risk of her own life and treat her like a criminal. Full stop. Both of you quiet down, the discussion is over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We believe you," December says. "Why did you leave, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs. "Even though we loved what we were doing, the SDC was closing in on our base — our home in that warehouse. We'd put a lot of work into it, but they could've tracked us back there eventually, no matter how much the people of Mantle tried to misdirect them for us. Roman heard through his connections that the SDC was getting close, the local branch of the Fang confirmed it, and so he convinced us to leave Mantle. We came to Vale with him and set up here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Roman?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The scoundrel of an adoptive older brother I mentioned earlier. Thief with a heart of... silver, let's say. Sticks to only sufficiently corrupt targets."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet nots. "I know some people like that. Tangentially. I never considered getting into a gang - it's a good way to die - but there were some people I could respect who've done... less than legal things. I'm sure all those machines saw the results of my patchy hormone treatments."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and smiles bittersweetly. "Good on you for getting those, but I'm sorry it was necessary. As for after we came here, we... may have caused a schism in the local branch of the Fang. There was an up and coming lieutenant who was too violent even for our taste, and we convinced some of the other local Faunus to push back against his bullshit, and well... one thing led to another. He took his die-hard radicals and split off, and everyone else — including his now-ex-girlfriend — formed the Harmony faction. Oops?"

She grins sheepishly and scratches at one of her ears.

Permalink Mark Unread

So that would be Blake Belladonna then, and the ex-boyfriend would be Adam Taurus.

Best to sit on that for now until she can verify it somehow else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well aren't you suspicious.

Permalink Mark Unread

It costs us nothing to just not elaborate, and it'll probably be more comfortable for Sable to not get into the gory details. Leave it, Vi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds really messy," December says. "I've heard of gangs that go through splits like that and it's rarely ever peaceful. Is everyone going to be okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "She's got more and better of a support system than she did with Adam. There are still some hurts, I think, but all we can do is be there for her. The whole faction drew closer together in the aftermath, and I occasionally drop by to try to keep it that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that confirms that. Freely offered, yet. Seems a little suspicious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet takes Sable's hand again, mostly to spite Lillian.

"I'm glad. And I'm glad you got out okay and are still helping people as best you can. I..."

She looks down at Sable's hand. "I can't say I wasn't surprised, but... I don't think this is a dealbreaker, not after all I've seen of you already in these few short days. I want to learn more about you, about... all the ways you're weird and complex and deep... And I think the way to do that is to stay by your side."

She looks away. "I believe you're just trying your best to protect the people you care about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um... This is kind of an insensitive question, sorry, but I've heard that in gangs there's kind of a... favors-for-favors thing that happens..."

She looks over at the pile of gifts. "I don't owe anything in return for all of this, do I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable looks her firmly in the eye. "The only favor you owe is not dying. Live your best life and don't die."

Permalink Mark Unread

... she can't help it, she smiles at that. Sable's just so charming

"Alright," she murmurs. "I'll do my best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good girl," she replies with a grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes hard at that one. She could really get used to that.

"Says the good girl herself."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes a bit too. "Heh. Fair point. So, you're still gonna try things out, even after hearing all the dark secrets, eh? Well, I'll have to make it worth your while. So, what's your favorite pastime?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure. I haven't really... existed for all that long enough to have my own hobbies. December likes messing with technical things and so on... I guess I could say I'm more into fashion, I was the one who bought us our dresses."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, maybe I should introduce you to Coco when CFVY1 comes back from their latest field mission! Coco is the fashion expert, and absolutely loves it. But there's plenty of time to try things out, too. Maybe you'll like drawing, or who knows what else?"

1 Pronounced "Coffee"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, who knows!"

She smiles. "Maybe you'll even get Lillian to try something. She's been doing nothing but grumping this whole time."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Valid to grump, but I bet we can find something she likes sooner or later. December will probably love time in the workshop with me and Ruby. But we'll definitely have to find something for Lillian."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for thinking of me," Lilian says. "I... don't want to seem ungrateful, it's just a very big transition and also fighting Grimm is scary."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs harshly. "No shit fighting Grimm is scary. You're damned right about that. Something tells me you'll be better at it than you expect, though. But omnicidal monsters aside, what sorts of things do you want to try, Lilian?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure. I think I'd like to... get organized, get working, get things sorted and stable, and then once I have an idea of what daily life is like here I'll be able to find something. Speaking with the teams would be helpful, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, our three teams tend to sit together in the cafeteria, so there's an easy opportunity to start meeting people coming up shortly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gosh, everyone at once... That's a lot to take in. We'll do our best, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think maybe Lillian is a little scared of crowds. They've never been very good for her in the past."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Understandable. And it's hard to make the cafeteria not a crowd situation. But there are other ways to ease into things. Little hangouts with one or two, tutoring sessions, practice spars, things like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's very kind of you..."

Lilian looks down at Sable's hand and squeezes. "Alright. We'll do our best. Let's say that... for now, Violet can take the lead, we'll try and do some fashion things, she seems most comfortable with this whole thing overall... And with time we'll figure things out and get straightened out."

She smiles crookedly. "Let's just hope that this thing that's happening to us doesn't mess everything up."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and nods and squeezes Lilian's hand back. "Sounds like a plan. And if the thing with the stars interferes, we'll just adapt. So far everything it's given you seems to be an upgrade, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. It's so reassuring that you... can see it, and confirm it, and say it's real. I would be going completely out of my head otherwise - things popping up in my vision after all that?" She shakes her head. "The fits it gives me aren't exactly... good... either... But they're better than what I had before, so I guess I'm still grateful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully it gets easier." She gives her hand a comforting squeeze, then checks the time. "Oh, wow. Almost lunch. Time flies when you're hanging out with a trio of fascinating and beautiful women."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awwwww. Flatterer." Violet smiles. "Alright, let's go meet some people. You can introduce us to everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

She stands, takes Violet's hand with a faint blush and a grin, and leads the way toward the cafeteria. "Favorite kinds of food?", she asks along the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seafood," says Lilian. "Especially sushi. It's too pricey for us to get it often but I like it when I can afford it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like spicy food," Violet says. "Hot sauce improves more or less everything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or just fast food in general."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Blake and Jade are the two biggest seafood lovers I know, though I can keep up with them. If they recommend a seafood place, I guarantee you it will be both delicious and not run by racists. As for spicy, you want to talk to Pyrrha, Ren, Maya, or Blake again. Jade and I enjoy it, but not as passionately as those four. The cafeteria can manage pretty good burgers and fries, and there are a few good places close to where the airships drop us for trips into Vale."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Blake sounds really interesting, but I absolutely do not want to end up peppering her with questions about her asshole ex and I feel like I would be super in danger of that if I talked to her for long enough. Lots of hot food lovers, huh? I guess that'll be convenient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps we could talk with Jade about seafood."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Blake definitely does not appreciate conversations about Adam. I don't think she's even told her team much about him yet. She's a quiet sort, at least until she gets really close to someone. Talking about seafood would probably brighten Jade's day, and Blake might join in too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll do my best to be cool. I'm just... I'm maybe not the best at being tactful." She rubs the back of her head. "Then again all my experience is from soulstress-induced emotional swings, so..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something tells me it'll be easier going forward," she says with a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's hoping."

Violet looks down the hallway at the cafeteria doors. "After you," she says. "I'm still shy about getting to meet actual Huntress candidates."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable takes Violet's hand, steps up to the doors, and pushes them open. Inside the enormous cafeteria are three long rows of sturdy tables running the length of the room, with bench-style seats on each side. Dozens of colorful students in school uniforms sit at the tables, starting to eat their meals.

In the middle, three teams have claimed a section to themselves. There's this girl, with black hair that runs dark red at the tips.

Ruby Rose

Age: 15 | Gender: F | Aura: Red

Associations

Team RWBY: Leader

A rising star among first-year teams, RWBY notably took out a giant nevermore during initiation. Ruby is the primary strategist of the team, and is a prodigious combatant, especially for her age.

Semblance

Petal Burst

Ruby is capable of moving at speeds two to three times what most Huntresses can achieve through her semblance, which leaves behind a wake of rose petals drifting in the air. She's also rumored to be able to perform brief bursts of an almost-flight through straining her speed to its limits.

Weapon

Crescent Rose

An extremely high caliber sniper-scythe, Crescent Rose has allowed Ruby both incredible enhancement to her movement around the battlefield, along with impressive range and accuracy. Further, in close combat she can mow through low-level Grimm. There is only one other scythe-wielder of this skill level active: Qrow Branwen, Ruby's uncle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sitting next to her is this white-haired girl.

Weiss Schnee

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Light Blue

Associations

Team RWBY: Member

Weiss is the primary Dustcaster of team RWBY, capable of powerful area denial through her Semblance and her Dust skills — especially with ice Dust. Her skills are a large part of what put team RWBY on such a steep rise.

Schnee Dust Company: Heiress

The SDC is the leading producer of Dust and associated products in the world. They are one of the leading corporations in control of the Kingdom of Atlas, and carry immense political weight even in other kingdoms due to their economic contributions. Weiss has not been heavily involved in SDC operations thus far, and has expressed an interest in cleaning up the company's history of abuse.

Semblance

Glyphs

The hereditary Semblance of the Schnee family, Glyphs are a powerful and extremely versatile ability that takes extremely well to Dust enhancement. Can be used for everything from bombardment to restraint to movement to defense. There is one higher-level skill in the Semblance that Weiss has yet to master: summoning. If mastered, this ability would allow Weiss to summon specters of defeated foes to fight at her side.

Weapon

Myrtenaster

It is a multi-action dust rapier, featuring a four-chamber revolving cylinder for Dustcasting. The hilt possesses four prongs that encase the revolver-like chamber around the ricasso instead of a bow type hand-guard that is common among most rapiers, in a manner somewhat alike to a swept hilt. This mechanism can be controlled by the sword-hand, enabling her to seamlessly cycle the chamber in combat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Across from them is this boisterous blonde, with long, luxuriously curly hair and lavender eyes.

Yang Xiao Long

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Yellow

Associations

Team RWBY: Member

Yang is the close combat brawler of first year standout team RWBY. She works impressively well under her sister's leadership, despite being the older sibling, and has been working to curb her impulsive streak.

Semblance

Burn

Burn allows Yang to "save up" the damage dealt to her Aura, storing it to be dealt back later in the fight. When her Semblance is activated, Yang's hair catches fire, her Aura flares dramatically around her, and her eyes turn red. In this state, Yang's strength is significantly enhanced, returning double the absorbed kinetic energy.

Weapons

Ember Celica

This pair of shot gauntlets provide Yang with a combination of mobility, ranged attacks, and melee enhancement. Their primary ammunition is an "explosive knockback" gravity/fire Dust blend, which can be triggered to burst on exiting the barrel or on contact with a target. The former is used for mobility, the latter for ranged and melee attacks. In close combat, Yang uses the kinetic force of the blast to increase the power of her strikes, triggering in the moment of impact.

She seems to be just finishing telling a story.

"—And so Port spins around and I just barely manage to get the bottle out of view in time, and he spends the rest of the the detention asking Cardin invasive questions about his hair and his family history to try to figure out why his hair turned blue."

The others snicker.

Permalink Mark Unread

Next to her, a mix of giggling softly at the story and pleased at a bully's misfortune, is this black-haired Faunus girl, a pair of cat ears twitching atop her head.

Blake Belladonna

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Purple

Associations

Team RWBY: Member

Blake is the agility and mobility specialist of this prominent first-year team, one notable for excellent combination attacks.

White Fang (Kuo Kuana Branch): Founder's Daughter

For all that the Atlesian branch is the first, Kuo Kuana is the home office of this Faunus Rights movement. Founded by Ghira and Kali Belladonna and Sienna Khan in the aftermath of the Faunus Rights Revolution, the organization relocated its central branch to Kuo Kuana — on what many Humans call the continent of Menagerie. This branch has since functioned in a central and coordinating role, though the High Leader has been known to travel to other continents and participate in operations on occasion. In the past decade or so, Ghira stepped down as High Leader to become Chieftan of Kuo Kuana, with Sienna Khan taking his place. This decision seems to have been partly motivated by the White Fang as a whole moving in a somewhat more violent direction than Ghira was comfortable with. It is unclear whether the rumored Belladonna/Khan triad also broke up at that time.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Harmony Faction): Honorary Lieutenant

Blake helped found the more human-accepting of Vale's two White Fang factions. The split came about when Adam Taurus (leader of the opposing faction) faced substantial resistance to his goal of radicalizing the Valean White Fang toward increasing levels of violence and anti-Human sentiment. The Faction is currently led by a small council that includes Carnelian Tukson of Tukson's Book Trade, due in part to Blake's decision to enroll at Beacon, but they would likely follow her if she returned.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Radical Faction): Traitor

The degree of Adam Taurus's possessive antipathy toward Blake is unknown, but suspected to be extreme.

Semblance

Shadow

Shadow allows Blake to leave behind illusory clones, capable of taking a single hit before fading. She has developed mobility uses for this Semblance as well, kicking off clones in midair to change direction or ascend higher.

Weapons

Gambol Shroud

This is a mechashift sword/pistol and a reinforced and bladed sheath, with a long ribbon attached to the hilt of the sword (which also serves as the grip of the pistol). Blake uses Gambol Shroud as everything from a whip to a flail, on top of the base uses of its forms. Clever ties with the ribbon allow triggering the pistol while swinging it in a wide circle around herself, providing a degree of area offense.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sitting next to Blake and facing the window is a dusky-skinned girl with bright copper eyes and wavy hair.

Maya Cupric

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Bronze

Associations

Mantle's Marauders (Team JSMN): Founding Member

Maya is the heart of the Marauders' impressive battlefield coordination and endurance, between her Semblance and her reasonably deep Aura reserves (though not as deep as Sable's). One of the Marauders' two Human members, Maya is nonetheless just as committed to their goals of rooting out oppression wherever they can, after losing her parents to an accident in the SDC's Dust mines.

White Fang (Atlesian Branch): Associate, Honorary Member

Maya is one of the few Humans allowed to see the inside of White Fang operational planning, and has significantly contributed to the success of raids she's participated in. She and the rest of the Marauders are known to insist on access to target justification records, however. The Atlesian branch is thankfully reliably able to provide this documentation, to the SDC's chagrin.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Harmony Faction): Associate

There was significant consternation within the Valean branch of the White Fang when the Marauders arrived and attempted to reestablish their affiliate status locally. The presence of two Humans among the members inspired strong reactions in the not-yet-schismed radicals, and this exacerbated the growing tensions between the two groups. The members of what became the Harmony faction believed that Humans who were willing to help the cause, especially if vouched for by the leadership of the Atlesian branch as the Marauders were, could be trusted.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Radical Faction): Enemy

It is unclear whether Adam Taurus views the Human or Faunus members of the Marauders as worse, considering the former as infiltrators into what he sees as his organization, and the other as traitors to the movement for splitting away from his leadership. Regardless, the enmity of the Radicals toward the Marauders cannot be overstated.

Semblance

Armory

Through Armory, Maya can tag combat equipment from the size of a moon clip with no hard upper bound, with a small cost to establish that increases dramatically above armor size. She can "reallocate" tagged objects within a kilometer or two, placing it in a position relative to herself or another tagged object, with a scaling price by mass. She can also remotely control and sense through (as well as the status of) tagged weapons. It is suspected that she may be able to repair tagged objects as well, but that has not been demonstrated conclusively yet.

Weapons

Promise

Promise is a mechashift fusion of a mace made from a lightning Dust infused alloy with a grenade launcher. Given any chance to prepare at all, Maya can be assumed to have an immense variety of Dust grenades available at all times, and with her Semblance there is no opportunity to observe which has been loaded into Promise.

Patience

Patience is a shield capable of alternating between heater and scutum forms, and in the latter form can use gravity Dust to lock in place in the current gravitational reference frame. Maya has been known to leap into the air, lock Patience in place as a midair step, and then use Armory to unlock it and reallocate it back to her arm after vaulting off of it.

She tilts her head and smiles wider. "Sable's here," she says without looking.

A short, black-haired Faunus with sharp green eyes and grey wings is sitting across from her.

Jade Hafner

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Green

Associations

Mantle's Marauders (Team JSMN): Founding Member

Leader of team JSMN, Jade is the tactician of the Marauders, As hoped, the leadership role is prompting growth from the girl, inspiring her to reach out and connect with more people. Jade's flight and magnetoreception also help her provide recon and scouting for the team, alongside her talents in navigation and stealth.

White Fang (Atlesian Branch): Associate, Honorary Member

Jade impressed local leadership in Mantle enough to be directly involved in operations planning from time to time, despite the Marauders only being an affiliate group. She is likely personally responsible for the operations she ran being cleaner, faster, and less bloody than they otherwise would have been.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Harmony Faction): Associate

As with the rest of the Marauders, Jade helped the Harmony faction significantly during the initial schism. She occasionally has tea with Tukson and keeps in the loop about local affairs.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Radical Faction): Enemy

Jade has personally led counter-raids to defend those targeted unjustly by Taurus's radicals, with the help of the other Marauders. She considers the Radicals' view extremely wasteful and counterproductive.

Semblance

Stellation

Jade's Semblance, Stellation, provides her with unparalleled photokinesis. She can bend, concentrate, distort, and lens the light in her vicinity. This ability has been used for lasers, invisibility, telescopic vision, and even personally-generated hardlight in recent years. She can generate hardlight without the aid of hardlight Dust, though the Aura cost is much cheaper for her with it.

Weapons

Verdant Thorns

A pair of high-caliber semi-automatic pistols, Verdant Thorns have a retractable dagger mounted on the barrel of each pistol, allowing for kerambit-like usage in melee. Touching the butts of the pistols together causes a mechashift transformation into Verdant Thorns' bow form, the pistols locking together and a length of spring-alloy extruding from near the hammer on each pistol. During the transformation, a hardlight string is formed (partially assisted through Stellation). Hardlight arrows are formed by the wielder using a crystal of hardlight Dust embedded in each pistol's grip.

"Looks like she's adopted the new girls already," she notes with a fond snicker.

Grinning, head resting on Jade's shoulder, is a particularly colorful girl. Her hair is half pink and half brown, with a white streak in the pink half. Her eyes are likewise pink and brown, but on opposite sides.

Neopolitan

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Pink

Associations

Mantle's Marauders (Team JSMN): Founding Member

The combination of Neopolitan and Jade are what make the Marauders one of the few teams with the potential to take an infiltration track in their time here at Beacon, and the only current first-year team with that option. Neopolitan is also notably mute from an event in her childhood, and as a result the entire team has learned Atlesian Sign Language.

White Fang (Atlesian Branch) Associate, Honorary Member

Neopolitan and Jade have performed exceptional infiltrations into corporate offices, and have significantly enhanced the reach of the White Fang's intelligence operations during their time in Mantle. The two sometimes took one-way infiltration routes, counting on Maya having tagged their outfits to extract them through reallocation, though person-sized movements take enough Aura that Sable has to reinforce Maya in that process.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Harmony Faction): Associate

Neopolitan has assisted the Harmony faction by infiltrating the Radicals on more than one occasion through use of her Semblance, extracting intel on their upcoming operations.

White Fang (Valean Branch, Radical Faction): Enemy

Adam Taurus holds a particular grudge against Neopolitan, because she has on more than one occasion stolen his mask, forcing him to wear an improvised substitute until a replacement could be procured.

Semblance

Overactive Imagination

Neopolitan's Semblance allows her to create tangible illusions. She can wrap them around her body as a disguise, or use them as decoys to escape or dodge an attack. A hard strike breaks one of her illusions with a sound of shattering glass, revealing whatever was concealed behind or underneath it.

Weapons

Hush

Hush is a highly reinforced parasol with a concealed rapier hidden inside. The hidden blade can be extended from the tip, or withdrawn to be used separately. Hush has gravity dust embedded within it to allow it to support Neo's weight during falls. She opens the canopy of the parasol to block attacks, deflects and parries strikes with it like a rapier, and hangs beneath it as a mobility aid.

Crash

This high-caliber revolver is quite similar to Sable's Sonder, capable of taking out lower-level Grimm with single shots when well-aimed. As with Sonder, it is frequently loaded with Dust ammunition and uses moon clips for quick reloading.

At the table across from the previous seven Huntresses, in the middle row, is another group of four. This blond boy has noticed Sable and Violet's arrival and is grinning cheerfully at them.

Jaune Arc

Age: 17 | Gender: M | Aura: Yellow

Associations

Team JNPR: Member, Leader

Despite coming to Beacon with forged transcripts, Jaune has proved to have strong tactical intuitions and a solid work ethic through the accelerated training course his team (especially Pyrrha, and to a lesser extent the other two teams as well) have been putting him through.

Semblance

Unknown

Jaune has not yet uncovered his Semblance.

Weapons

Crocea Mors

A classic sword and shield pair, Crocea Mors is an heirloom weapon used by Jaune's great-grandfather in the Great War. The shield collapses into a sheath for the sword using mechashift.

Sitting next to him (and giving him tiny sappy looks when he won't see) is this redhead.

Pyrrha Nikos

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Red

Associations

Team JNPR: Level

With her previous history as the champion of Mistral's national juniors tournament, it's no surprise that Pyrrha is such a successful Huntress trainee. She has taken on the bulk of the work of training Jaune up to par, and is a powerhouse of her team.

Semblance

Polarity

Pyrrha's Polarity grants control of magnetism, allowing her to manipulate most metallic objects in her vicinity. She has immense strength in her Semblance, able to move heavy weights at great speed and force, but also impressive fine control. Throughout her time on the tournament circuit, she used Polarity incredibly subtly, only ever nudging an opponent's weapons an inch or so out of alignment. This careful use and secrecy earned her the title of "Invincible Girl", though she does not seem to be very fond of the moniker.

Weapons

Miló

Miló is capable of mechashift transformations between three forms: a javelin, a variety of western Mistrali short sword, and a semi-automatic rifle. In javelin form, the rifle becomes part of the body and can be used to fire the javelin with enhanced speed, range, and power.

Akoúo̱

This dipylon shield is quite durable, and Pyrrha is fond of throwing it and then nudging its course with her Semblance to ensure its prompt return.

Across from those two, facing the window and the previous seven, is this boy with a pink streak in his black hair. He's patiently eating his lunch, despite his partner's antics.

Lie Ren

Age: 17 | Gender: M | Aura: Pink

Associations

Team JNPR: Member

Ren is a heavily agility-focused member of team JNPR, He rounds out the team nicely and complements the diverse abilities of the other three members well.

Semblance

Tranquility

Ren's Semblance allows him to mask negative emotions in anyone in physical contact with him, or whom he has indirect contact with through another person or object. Extending it beyond a few other people has a prohibitive Aura cost. While Tranquility is in use, people under its effects do not attract the Grimm, and also find themselves calmer.

Weapons

StormFlower

These are a pair of machine pistols equipped with collapsible sickle-like blades mounted underneath the barrels and extended magazines. The blades are sharp enough to pierce the bone armor of even alpha Grimm, but the shots have comparatively low stopping power. The damage from the shots does add up, however, and can weaken Grimm for later strikes with the blades.

Age: 17 | Gender: F | Aura: Pink

Associations

Team JNPR: Member

Nora is JNPR's talented brawler and bombardment specialist. The teams opponents have been found to universally regret entering close combat with her.

Semblance

High Voltage

Nora's Semblance allows her to absorb and channel electricity into her muscles, enhancing her already impressive strength still further. All electrical currents up to a certain strength simply fail to damage her at all, instead being absorbed as fuel for her next strikes.

Weapon

Magnhild

This heavy maul has a mechashift transformation into a revolver grenade launcher. Her grenades are handmade, loaded with a custom Dust blend of fire and lightning, and can be triggered on impact, proximity, or remotely. The maul form keeps the grenade launcher available, and Nora can use this for mobility enhancement. Furthermore, the entire weapon is thoroughly hardened against electricity, allowing Nora to use it as a lightning rod for a boost to her strength, if a convenient storm is available.

As Violet and Sable watch, she uses a spoon to catapult a grape across the aisle at Neo.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo bounces up, head coming up off Jade's shoulder and catching the grape in her mouth. Nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, whoa, that is way too much information, put some back

Permalink Mark Unread

The overlays all blink out at once.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whoa, no, don't just vanish on her -

Permalink Mark Unread

The overlays quite cheerfully pop back into existence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, okay good, the little floating nametags can stay. But everything else can stay firmly collapsed for now.

She waves to Jade and Jaune, a slightly awkward smile on her face.

"Hey Jade, hey Jaune. There's... really a lot of people here, isn't there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's like a market day in here. So crowded."

She looks over at Sable. "Where should I sit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, Lilian serruptitiously expands each overlay to its first level and flicks through it.

Schnee dust company heiress? Daughter of one of the founders of the White Fang? Sable sure does meet some interesting people. She guesses that's Huntresses for you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable grins and leads the way to the group of three teams. "Everyone, meet Violet Morning-Glory. Violet, meet teams RWBY, JSMN, and JNPR. She's still reeling a bit, so try not to overwhelm her with too many questions at once."

Everyone waves and variously says hi.

Sable points out the open spot next to Maya. "We'll sit there, but we need food first." And she leads the way to the counter to collect trays and load them down with food. There are lots of options: salads, sausages, hot dogs, pizza, corn dogs, cornbread, chicken tenders, fries, brownies, and a few more options besides.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has literally died and gone to heaven.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whoa hold up what's with that thought. This isn't a storm giants thing is it?

Permalink Mark Unread

No, she just means... The food is really good. And it's on top of... mysterious powers, a seat at Beacon, a whole tide of welcoming presents...

Permalink Mark Unread

You're staring at the food, girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, uh, she's going to take a little of everything except maybe the salad.

The floating windows are still there and it feels kind of surreal.

Permalink Mark Unread

We need to go sit down. Now. And have less things happen to us.

Permalink Mark Unread

December kind of dazedly follows Lily's instructions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable notices the slight dazedness and helps make sure the girls make it back to the seat okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

December settles in her seat and looks around at the teams.

Okay, the popup nametags are useful but they're not helping her feel okay right now. She's just gonna quietly dismiss them.

"Give me a minute and let me focus on my food, please," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone nods and eats, and conversations pick back up ambiently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The funniest bit," Yang notes a few seats down, "is that when we're leaving detention, after Cardin rushes out, Port raises one eyebrow at me and says he's partial to green over blue."

Permalink Mark Unread

Weiss sporfles despite herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo leans back to catch a grape on a much higher ballistic arc.

Permalink Mark Unread

All in all, people just continue with the business of eating lunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, she can do this.

Corn dog. Corn dog sounds like a good start. It's been forever since she's had a corn dog.

... It's just a cafeteria.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, you can do this. It's just food.

Permalink Mark Unread

You know, this is a pretty good corn dog.

Permalink Mark Unread

... gradually they loosen up a bit. Not enough to want the floating nametags back but enough to try and say something.

"So, uh, hi, I'm Violet." She looks around at the table. "Jade, Maya, Sable, Neopolitan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo waves and nods, them catches another grape. Nom.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya nods, a sandwich bite in her mouth just then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade nods as well. "That's us. Still reeling from all the changes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It has been a lot really fast, yeah." Violet takes another bite of her corndog. "Lots of new people, both inside the head and outside, weird soul effects, instant transition, becoming a Huntress trainee..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?", Maya asks. "Sable hadn't mentioned weird soul effects."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Vi's story to tell, not mine, though I can help explain things if needed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I honestly don't know if I should talk about it, it's real weird. Uh... Basically I seem to be getting the weirdest superpowers ever? I have no idea if this is a Semblance thing or has to do with our having three souls or if it's completely unrelated. I should probably talk to one of the professors about it, they've probably got more experience with this kind of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a Semblance," Sable notes after a bite of hot dog. "I've felt it when it happened and it didn't feel like one. Hard to describe properly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. That is weird. Your best bets are either Port, who seems like a blowhard but has seen a little of nearly everything, or the Headmaster, who almost seems to specialize in weirdness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we'll probably ask around after we've settled in a bit more. Right now we're just going to do our best as far as we can."

Permalink Mark Unread

The room wheels for a moment, with the sensation of a star falling -

Permalink Mark Unread

- but the disorientation passes after a moment, leaving her unaffected.

She hastily takes another bite of her corndog.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Lilian a curious look. "Another one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Yeah. That's the... third? Fourth? Depends on if you count the one that started this all."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums thoughtfully, has a sip of her drink, then asks, "Another what? Something with the weird soul thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it seems to be... reaching out. Trying to grow, in a way? It gave me a new ability before I came to the cafeteria, and there's been a couple moments of disorientation where it didn't do anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo tilts her head and frowns a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, all the details I didn't give yet. Also, girls, meet Lilian." She takes a sip of her drink while everyone waves, then continues. "Short version, during the procedure the Morning-Glories somehow connected with something that rammed a star of power into their souls—"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lewd~"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable rolls her eyes fondly and continues as though she hadn't been interrupted. "—granting an ability. She managed to inspect it today and apparently it's a probability warping thing that makes risky procedures guaranteed to go well, which was very handy a week ago, let me tell you. Earlier this morning, it attempted and didn't connect to anything, and then just before lunch there was a connection."

She turns a questioning look toward Lilian, unsure whether she wants to share the nature of the new ability.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think proooooobably we should keep the second ability quiet until I have a chance to talk to... probably the headmaster. It's more than a bit awkward."

Permalink Mark Unread

She quirks an eyebrow with an interested look. She's had to deal with secrets before, though. She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

She mimes sipping a coffee, then typing on a keyboard, then taps her wrist where normal people keep a watch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable nods. "Yeah, he'll be in his office after lunch. Good thinking, Neo."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess we'll have to go see him then, then." Lilian taps her chin, then picks up a fry and bites it daintily. It looks faintly ridiculous contrasted with the fast food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya hums for a moment. "The usual movie night tonight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo's eyes light up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, it's your turn, so it can be a heist movie," Jade replies with a fond chuckle.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Lilian a questioning look.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ohmygod I love heist movies. Can I join? I haven't had a chance to see any of the latest ones I haven't been able to afford it for months -"

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet, you're rambling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Live a little, Lilian! It's a heist movie night!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, sure, just invite yourself along.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can come to the movie right? I expect that with all you girls sending me gifts and stuff you're probably okay with me joining in? It's okay if you're not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo grins and nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Translating Neo for those not used to her, the questioning look was an interest check and an invitation, and the nodding just now was confirmation that you're absolutely fucking invited. We're all pretty curious about you three at this point, and looking forward to hanging out and getting to know you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'd love to come, once I get a bit more settled in and have talked to the Headmaster about the strange powers. When is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Immediately after dinner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be there then."

She finishes off the remains of her corn dog, then moves on to a slice of pizza. "You four usually do social stuff together, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "We're pretty close. We do things with the other teams too, like I do weekly tea with Blake in town, or Sable does engineering time with Ruby, but we always come back to each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's kind of cute. It must be nice to have solid friends like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and shakes her head. "Friends, yeah. I suppose the polycule is built on a foundation of friendship, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet flushes. "Sorry, Sable did tell me, I'm just - a little bit of a ditz I guess." She takes another bite of pizza to hide her blush.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable just smiles and kisses Violet's cheek, then starts in on a corndog.

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes BRIGHT pink.

"Wh-what was that for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and shakes her head, grinning. "Ditz solidarity? Considering you unreasonably cute? Rewarding you for trying to get to know my polycule? My own mysterious reasons?"

She shrugs, still grinning.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll just have to live with your reasons being mysterious."

Violet blushes and grins, and finishes off her slice of pizza.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's kind of funny," she notes between bites of another corndog, "that none of the gang had lunch plans on a Saturday. Usually you'd expect someone to be out in town or something, but I guess everyone's staying in."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo taps her head beside her eye, then points at Violet, an eyebrow cocked.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or, as Neo suggested, we're all curious to meet the new girls we're adopting."

Permalink Mark Unread

December offers a smile. "I'm glad to meet you all," she says. "Even if it does mean I get teased by Sable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The rest of us are only holding off until we've known you long enough to know what to tease you about, don't worry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo smirks and nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh dear," replies December. "I guess I'm doomed, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Run while you still can. There's no hope for me, but you can escape!"

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a laugh out of her.

"Dork. Of course I'm not running."

She takes another handful of fries. "The food's too good. Only a slight chance of a... No, I shouldn't joke. I will say I'm looking forward to sparring practice."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo perks up and leans forward eagerly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, sparring is always fun. We'll have to try you on everything, see what feels right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm already getting the sense that me and Neo are going to get along great."

Violet picks up her cornbread and starts making headway on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles warmly and nods. "Sparring is one of Neo's very favorite things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And also foreplay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes and pouts a bit but does not deny it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thaaaaat makes Violet very pink.

"Oh," she says. "I - all of you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe even all at once!

Permalink Mark Unread

THAT IS NOT HELPING, DECEMEBER

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade smirks. "We don't all consider sparring foreplay, no. That's mostly Neo."

Permalink Mark Unread

She exhales. Nice save from Jade there.

"Okay, cool." She takes another bite of her cornbread. "I guess I will just do my best to catch up."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait for her to let her guard back down, and...

"Of course that doesn't mean we're not also just as curious and interested as Neo. Some of us are just more patient and investigatory than others."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes again.

"Hey, you were supposed to have saved me!"

She chuckles a little and rubs the back of her head. "I guess you got me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smirks at Violet, then adds, a little gentler, "We may tease, but that's only because we want you to keep up and play the game. You have to find your fun where you can, as a Huntress."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess I've got some learning to do then, huh?" She manages a genuine smile. "In more ways than one. More ways than two, even, if Sable ends up as 'enthusiastic' as Neo."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo gives Violet a mischievous look, then signs, 'I wasn't necessarily planning to seduce her, but if she's enthusiastic about sparring I'm not going to say no. She's hot.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She has no idea what that was but she deeply suspects that it was an innuendo.

"Yeah, well, same to you."

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Not every spar is foreplay for Neo, but if you enjoy it enough she's not going to say no considering how you're hot."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet blushes and grins. "I, um. Well. We'll see." She looks over at Neo and trails a finger through her hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo blows a kiss at Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Incorrigible gremlin is a flirt, news at eleven," Jade snarks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, other than Violet loving heist movies, what are your favorite kinds of movies, dears?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like soft sci-fi stuff, and Lillian likes dramas... and also has a weakness for big stupid action flicks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes I just want to turn my brain off for a while and watch two Huntresses go at it in a karate duel."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo grins and nods at Lilian.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sable and I love sci-fi, Jade loves political intrigue — as if we didn't see enough of that in Mantle — and Neo's other favorite is watching gorgeous Huntresses have a well-filmed fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be fun to watch some sci-fi with you two, then. Do you have any ones you like in particular?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable smiles and goes on to list a bunch of films. Remnan sci-fi has a higher proportion of aliens landing than Earth does, due to Dust not working in space, but Sable seems to overwhelmingly prefer the rarer films where people manage to figure out some alternate propulsion and go exploring and Things Happen from there.

Permalink Mark Unread

December's knowledge is more limited, but she's eager to hear about all the films she hasn't seen. They can go on like this for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya will just smile fondly at the two while she finishes her lunch, and squeeze Jade's hand across the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually everyone finishes their lunches, and Sable and December run out of sci-fi to nerd out together talk about.

"Shall we go to see the Headmaster, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds very smart to me," December replies. "Let's go."

She waves goodbye to the table. "See you all after dinner," she says. "Or maybe sooner!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable smiles and leads the way, waving fondly at everyone on the way out. The route takes them toward the central tower on campus, through some lovely courtyards.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is nice. The impending talk with the most important person in all of Vale is pretty intimidating. Nice gardens though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes December's hand encouragingly. "Talking to the Headmaster is... a lot, I won't lie, but from what I've seen he's always trying to help. Sometimes he seems to be playing chess, figuring out a bigger gameboard than any of us see, but even then he tries to make things go well for people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's just... awkward to talk to someone so important after my little life before. I guess I'm a little important now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you are. You're Huntresses in training, you've got three souls, and you've got these weird bonus powers. You count as important, even for someone like the Headmaster."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's going to be interesting to get used to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Welcome to Huntress life: there has never been a shortage of Interesting Times and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Violet's excited, but... I think you have to be sensible about this and recognize it's a dangerous profession. If glamorous."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Yeah, it is. I'm a decent insurance policy, as long as I get to you while you're still breathing, but there's no guarantee of that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian looks away. "Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunately there are no safer occupations for Aura wielders than security guards in remote areas, and I had to awaken your Auras to fix the mess your souls had become. I hate that I took that choice away from you, but it was that or let you die."

She squeezes Lilian's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will absolutely take this over that. You made the right call."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles, perhaps a bit bittersweetly. "Doesn't stop me from wishing I had better options, like I always do, but I'm certainly glad for the chance to get to know you three."

And they reach the tower and step inside, taking the elevator up to the Headmaster's floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a pause. Nobody really steps forward to occupy the brain. It's an in-between moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Looks like it's me, then. For a serious talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Go ahead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Go ahead.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they step out of the elevator to a small waiting area. "Normally there would be a secretary, but Miss Spruce is out on the weekends."

She steps up and knocks on the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment, they hear him reply through the door, "Come in, Miss Orchid, Miss Morning-Glory."

Permalink Mark Unread

How does he do that?

She gently pushes the door open, and steps through.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's sitting at his desk, working on a bit of paperwork on the built-in computer. He puts it aside as they enter. "It's good to see your better health has persisted, Miss Morning-Glory."

Then he turns to Sable and arches an eyebrow, smirking slightly. "Not barging in this time, Miss Orchid?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable barged into Professor Ozpin's office???

Okay not important, she can set that aside.

Permalink Mark Unread

She flushes. "Decisions had to be made quickly, you know how medical emergencies are, Headmaster."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods sagely. "Indeed. Now what brings the two of you into my office on a Saturday, when you could be bonding with your teammates or something else fun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To explain briefly... The odd occurrence that happened when Sable was helping me, during the procedure, has become an ongoing phenomenon. And it seems to be... giving me powers. There's a new one, now, that lets me see what seems to be basic database information on anyone I look at, in a kind of... floating window. It's very surreal, I have it suppressed right now. I don't know where it's pulling this information from or why I have this ability, but I also keep having... moments of disorientation where it feels like the power is "reaching" for more. And I don't know how long it'll go on for or what it'll do, in the long term."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm. I assume you've confirmed the events, Miss Orchid?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable nods. "Definitely happening, have felt one of the misses and the one connection since the procedure. It's not a Semblance. Feels external, except for all the ways it isn't. Connection trails off into a direction that gives me a headache."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keep watching, see if you can feel out what's causing the disorientation. For now," he turns to Lilian, "what sorts of details are in these database displays?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Age, gender, Aura color, general history at a broad level, weapon, semblance.  Affiliation with any major groups, esepcially radical or criminal ones. It told me that Sable had been a member of Mantle's Marauders and associated with the Atlesian White Fang before she came here. Everyone gets a nametag that can expand to a profile if I don't suppress it; they're accurate to my knowledge. Though noticeably short of specific details."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks sharply at her for a moment, then nods. "I see."

He pulls up a file on his computer.

"Exact wording of Miss Orchid's section about the Marauders?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She brings up the window again.

"Mantle's Marauders, founding member. Became team JSMN of Beacon after joining the academy."

Permalink Mark Unread

He arches an eyebrow, types something out on his desk, and then asks, "Any changes?"

A sentence has now been added to the end, when Lilian next looks:

Sable's battlefield healing is suspected to be a significant contributor to the group's exceptional operational record.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sable's battlefield healing is suspected to be a significant contributor to the group's exceptional operational record."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Congratulations, Miss Morning-Glory. Those displays are pulling from my database," he replies with a flourish.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that's not terrifying at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yikes!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed. And hello, Miss Morning-Glory."

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll simply have to accelerate his plans. Miss Orchid would have said if there was any deliberate action, and there won't be any easy way to remove access given the connections passing through extradimensional space. Further, the connection feels faintly like old high magic, something temperamental to meddle with on even the best day. He nods crisply.

"Given that there appears to be no way to revoke your access to my database, and given your closeness with Miss Orchid and her further closeness with her team, I will simply have to trust you with this. I will leave when and whether you include teams RWBY and JNPR in this to your discretion. Do not share the existence of the windows or where your advanced knowledge comes from with anyone outside those three teams. Message me if you have questions about anything you see in the dossiers," their scrolls both ping, "as you now have my contact address."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As for the powers more broadly," he turns to look out the window, considering for a moment, "please keep me apprised of any new developments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you very much, Headmaster. I'll do my best to repay you for your trust."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We both will, Headmaster. Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles at them and nods. "Do either of you have any further questions for now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have any ideas about what this thing that's happening could be? That you can share with me, obviously, if it's some form of secret Huntress business I obviously needn't be told."

Permalink Mark Unread

He grins a bit. "I truly have no idea, Miss Morning-Glory. I'm quite looking forward to what you girls discover about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll do our best, Headmaster." December smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Helping hold back the Grimm is a sacred duty," Violet adds. "We've been given a chance to really help and we're going to take it as best we can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad to hear that. Now why don't you four go enjoy what's left of your Saturday and leave me to this boring paperwork?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will, Headmaster, thank you."

December looks over at Sable and smiles slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable nods to the Headmaster, smiles at December, takes her hand, and out they go. Soon enough, they're in the elevator again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that was a lot easier than I expected. Ozpin's actually pretty cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly he really is. Also he's up to something. Probably something good, but totally up to something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All the best people are up to something."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins wider. "Very true. So what would you like to do with the afternoon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe try fashion? Or a weapon? I don't know what'll happen in classes, but I gotta keep up somehow, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmmm. Doing the weapon testing first will mean Ruby and I can start on building it sooner, and get you functional in combat classes sooner. Fashion doesn't have as many processes involved, and can happen at more flexible times, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then let's try for the weapon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lemme make a few calls then."

She pulls out her scroll as the lift reaches the ground floor.

"Hey Pyrrha, you up for weapons tryouts in a few?"

She starts leading the way to the dorms as she talks.

"Yeah, sooner we figure out where the newbies are drawn, sooner we can design."

The courtyards continue to be lovely. There's even a fountain.

"You're the best. Are Maya, Jade, or Ruby nearby? Awesome, I'll find Jade and Ruby."

She hangs up and starts tapping out a message.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmmm, what weapon...

She honestly has no idea. Guess she'll just have to try things.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's really not sure what to pick. Sword? Gun? Swordgun?

Maybe it'd be smart to figure out her Semblance some more first...

Well. She'll just do her best.

Permalink Mark Unread

As they get close to the dorms, a grey-winged streak plummets from the sky, landing dramatically next to them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Holy shit, Jade can fly???

"Holy shit, you can fly???"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep," she replies with an absolutely shit-eating grin, popping the p.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am so jealous. Congratulations."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smirks. "These things are pretty inconvenient sometimes, but flying makes up for it several times over. Also, I have literally never been lost in my life."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet grins. "Cool. Is it like a magnetic compass thing or what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly. So, looking forward to trying way too many weapons?"

They're all stepping into the dorms, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know it."

Permalink Mark Unread

At that point they stop outside a door to one of the dorm rooms. Sable knocks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby answers, a cookie in her hand. "Hiya, Sable! What's up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna come figure out weapons for the Morning-Glory girls?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins. "Ooooh absolutely just lemme change into workout clothes meet me here when you've changed bye!"

And the door is promptly shut.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well isn't she energetic.

"I guess I'd better throw on something myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. Jade and I have to change too. Meet you back out here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, that works."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable and Jade step quickly into one of two doors across the hall from RWBY's dorm. The Morning-Glory girls have their guest suite at the end of the hall.

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks back into her guest suite, and changes into the athleticwear that Sable got her.

She's still not really used to being this shape. It's welcome, entirely so, obviously, but... Wearing a sports bra sure is new, how it hugs her body after she's pulled it on. The way the shorts hug her hips is new too. It feels strange, right and yet unfamiliar.

She puts one of her old T-shirts on overtop it all - it's a little too big now, but that's fine - and goes to look at herself in the mirror.

Permalink Mark Unread

A woman who looks like her looks back.

... No, she looks back.

Her lips quirk up despite themselves.

Alright, time to go.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps back out into the hallway and looks around for Sable.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's Sable, waiting outside the cluster of three doors close together, wearing a midriff-baring tank-top and tight athletic shorts. She's chatting about weapons with Ruby.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who's wearing a red t-shirt with her emblem screen-printed on in black, and similar shorts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just then Jade joins them, wearing what can only be described as a fusion of a halter-top with athleticwear, to be easier on her wings.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like everyone's here and lookin' great. C'mon, Maya and Pyrrha are grabbing one of the training rooms with practice weapons for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

She walks over again. "Alright, I guess I'm ready to get the stuffing kicked out of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable leads the way down to the practice rooms. They're in another building.

Permalink Mark Unread

While they walk, Ruby bounces alongside December. "So hi! I'm Ruby Rose, but Sable probably already told you that, and I know there's three of you and that's really cool but I'm sorry if I can't always tell which of you is out at the time!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's totally okay, it's honestly kind of spooky how Ozpin can always tell when we switch. We're December at the moment; it's great to meet you, Ruby."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian surreptitiously goes through Ruby's profile while December talks.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's starting to become a habit, Lilian. You sure that you want it?

Permalink Mark Unread

I like to know what I'm getting into.

Permalink Mark Unread

The less you know the less you'll have to hide.

Permalink Mark Unread

But also the less I'll know. So, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Haven't you ever heard that curiosity killed the cat?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, but satisfaction brought it back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Suit yourself, I guess.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "The Headmaster knows so much it's kind of scary sometimes. Ooh I'm so excited to figure out what sorts of weapons you like it's so cool!" She bounces some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It really is so cool. A mechashift weapon! With Dust! I always wanted to work with Dust. Maybe not as ammunition but I'm still happy about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and smiles and bounces. "Dust is really cool too! I know enough about it but Weiss knows nearly everything there is to know about Dust."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My partner is so coooooool!"

She maybe looks a bit besotted.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to learn!"

And awwww, she's cute.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh okay! So the first thing you need to know is that there are two big categories of Dust: primary and derived. Primary Dust types can only be mined, you can't make them by combining other types. Derived, or combination, Dust types can be made by blending other types together. They can also occur naturally in the ground, either through natural combination processes or sometimes through natural formation. There are five primary types of Dust: fire, water, rock, lightning, wind. There are lots and lots of combinations of Dust, and sometimes people even invent new ones! There are two basic ways to combine Dust: just mixing up powders which can sometimes get you a decent result, or actually combining them using a chemical bath which is always better and for some types is totally required."

Permalink Mark Unread

December nods and leans in with a smile. "Cool! Go on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So the chemical combination process is basically a form of Dustcasting too, not just chemical, because you have to make the elemental energies dissolve too. You can do it without a Dustcaster if you have a seed crystal though. And the result is all the derived Dusts we see today! Gravity is fire and lightning. Magnetic is gravity and lightning. Hardlight is a difficult mixture of all the primaries except rock. Lava is fire and rock. Combustion — used mostly as fuel — is fire and wind.

"The really interesting part is that there are times when you actually need the blend rather than real combination. Huntress ammo that's been formulated for mobility has a powder mix of fire and gravity Dust. It's tricky to use, though. You have to nudge it with your Aura, like Dustcasting, to pick whether it hits you with the extra kick of recoil you need for mobility or not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds terrifically dangerous and deeply fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It really is! I can fling myself around the battlefield and not even use my Semblance for it! We're gonna teach you how to do very basic Dustcasting before we give you mobility ammo though. And none of that's until after we actually make your weapon. Well the Dustcasting practice can happen before that. But yeah!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, then let's get this show on the road!"

December grins, stretching her arms above her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Conveniently, while Ruby was infodumping, they were still making tracks toward their destination, because now Sable taps her scroll against a door and lets them into a training room. The room is large, with a central padded area and some chairs around the edges, and racks of various weapons against one wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Stretching and chatting with Maya in the center is Pyrrha, wearing a light tank top with her emblem. This one looks professionally done, however, lacking the hints of homemade screenprinting Ruby's shirt has. She's also wearing athletic shorts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya is wearing something similar, a crop-top in burnt umber on black and shorts.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So here's how this works," Sable starts as she steps over to the weapons. "There are a few very basic categories of melee motions, and we're going to show them to you. All three of you need to be paying close attention to how the motion feels in your body and whether it sparks and excitement in your souls, first while you watch and then while you try it yourselves."

She picks up a rapier, flips it over in her hand to grip the end, and passes it hilt-first to December before grabbing another for herself. "Once we narrow to a subset of categories, we'll try more variations within them to narrow further. Each category will have three phases: demonstration, walk-through, and short practice. Follow all that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I think so."

She takes the unfamiliar weapon in her hand, feeling the balance and weight of it. It's strange to hold such a thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is the lunging/piercing class of motions. Demonstration:"

She lunges forward in a thrust at an imaginary opponent, then follows with a series of rapidfire jabs and a few parries.

"This lends itself well to styles built on speed and precision and evasion. Now, match my stance."

She assumes a ready stance, body turned sideways to present a narrower target, rapier outstretched at an upward angle.

Permalink Mark Unread

She copies the stance, a bit sloppily.

"Alright," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pyrrha steps around December and makes a few corrections with light touches here and there — sword hand a little lower, tip of the blade a little higher, knee bent a bit and foot a bit straighter, then she nods at Sable and steps back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She slips into the form as best she can. Something about this one makes Lilian come forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable demonstrates a basic lunge in slow-motion. "Try to copy that, please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a stab at it.

It's not awful, but neither is it great.

Permalink Mark Unread

No one is great their first time. She walks Lilian through a few more repetitions, then switches to showing a short jab.

Permalink Mark Unread

She follows along gamely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some repetitions there, and then it's on to parries. These are little flourishes that redirect incoming strikes, and most of it is in the wrist and forearm but there's some nuance everywhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

These seem to bring out Violet for some reason? They don't really get it but they do?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. You're off to a good start. Now put that together. I'm going to attack in slow motion, and I want you to parry and then strike back, while paying attention to how natural it feels."

She slips into a ready stance. "Ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She settles back into the unfamiliar stance.

"Yeah, I'm ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

And there's the attack. It's slower than even a civilian would consider combat speed, and coming straight for her chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

She parries, following the motion as best she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then turns, and strikes back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She parries the strike, then steps back with a nod. "How'd that feel?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, I guess? Nothing leaps out to me about it. It seems fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and puts her rapier away, pulling out two arming swords — what Earth popular culture considers a "longsword" — and swaps one for Lilian's rapier, which she puts away. The other she hands to Pyrrha.

Permalink Mark Unread

December accepts the sword with a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pyrrha demonstrates a ready guard stance, with a two-handed grip.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sable comes behind with gentle nudges to help December take the position more properly.

"Now we'll test slashing-style motions."

Permalink Mark Unread

This feels pretty decent at a first test. It is the most common weapon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Arming swords," Pyrrha explains as she demonstrates a series of slashes and swings, "are designed to give a solid balance of both slashing," finishing on a thrust, "and thrusting."

She returns to the ready stance. "Are you ready to try it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, sure. I used to playfight with sticks as a kid."

She readies herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pyrrha walks December through the strikes, one at a time: several repetitions each of first overhead down, then both downward diagonals, then both upward diagonals, then high horizontal strikes in both directions, then mid-height ones, and then an upward slash, finishing on thrusts.

Permalink Mark Unread

This feels a lot more natural than the odd stiff pose of the rapier.

"I'm liking this so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

Several people are noticing the increased comfort.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Now for blocks."

She demonstrates several repetitions of high, low, and side blocks at various angles.

Permalink Mark Unread

This feels a little clunkier, but she can manage.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And now we put it together. I will make several slow strikes at you while you block, and then we reverse it. Ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She settles the sword in her grip. "Ready."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pyrrha slashes in with a diagonal downward slash, then upward on the other diagonal, then a thrust.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blocks both, but her guard is a bit sloppy.

"... This feels too rigid," she says. "I don't like standing in to attacks like this, my body wants to take a step back or maybe sideways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fascinating. Now try striking me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps forward, old memories of fighting with sticks coming forwards. Her hands strike once, twice. It's not too shabby for a novice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pyrrha blocks deftly, then steps back and nods. "How did those strikes feel?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fairly decent? Something's not perfect but it's definitely better than the rapier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm. That certainly suggests some possibilities over others, but let's keep trying the remaining classes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My turn," Jade says, stepping forward as Pyrrha puts her sword away. "Grab two matching daggers from the rack."

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes and grabs one in each hand.

She's seen this in movies before - you raise your forearm and have the dagger pointed downward and away from your body. She's not sure how the second one comes in though, it feels a bit awkward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade has taken a low stance with the dagger of her primary hand (her left) pointing upward and inward at a low angle, while her right is downward and outward. "With daggers, you switch grips frequently as needed. It's fast and close and messy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense."

She mirrors Jade's stance as best she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

After Sable adjusts her posture a bit, Jade runs through a quick routine: leaping lunges, stabs, slashes, and frequently darting backward and taking a guard pose.

Permalink Mark Unread

This footwork really gets her heart pumping. It's tiring, but something about it feels right - though she keeps not being able to coordinate the dagger in her odd left hand that well, she's much more nimble with her right.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a bit more practice, Jade steps back and hums. "How's all that feeling so far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like the fast footwork, but I keep feeling like my offhand is dragging or out of place. The right hand is good though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting. Everyone in agreement so far, or are there any divergent preferences?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been pushed forward pretty hard here, give me just a second..."

How are we feeling, girls?

Permalink Mark Unread

The rapier was better. Not good, but still better.

Permalink Mark Unread

I liked the two-handed sword best of the lot so far, but nothing is really sticking super well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither of them feel like they've found something they really like. Lillian liked the rapier best, Violet the two-handed sword."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting. Oh very interesting. Daggers up, girls."

She steps over and fetches a pair of sabers, each with a smooth curve to the blade, then flips one around and hands it to December when her hands are free. It's a one-handed sword, made for mobility and and slashing, judging by the look of it.

"Try that on."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts aside the daggers and takes the saber. It settles in her hand alright.

"What do I do with my left hand?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Personally, I use it for a whip that trails from the hilt of my saber, or my revolver, or sometimes just grabbing things to swing from. I've seen people try a small shield with a saber, and that could work too. There are lots of options. Weiss's sister sometimes wields a very short rapier-like sword in her off-hand, for another example."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm. I think I might want to try the small shield option."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shows December to a rack of shields in various sizes and shapes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She trails her fingers over some of the smaller ones. "I feel like I don't want something super heavy..."

She picks up a simple buckler from near the end of the row. "Let's try this, I think we'll get more of a feel for it with practice."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable grabs one of her own, then slips into a ready stance, the buckler leading.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shall I try, then?" She makes a testing swipe with the saber.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins. "Go right ahead."

Permalink Mark Unread

And she strikes! Leading with the sword, but with both her footwork and her shield to guard her.

This feels pretty solid...

Permalink Mark Unread

Hit with the shield!

Permalink Mark Unread

She strikes with the sword and then swings the shield in, feeling Violet behind the offhand strike -

Permalink Mark Unread

Annnnd almost overbalances as she throws the shield's weight.

"Whoa!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable catches the first strike on her shield, and then second, then raises an eyebrow at the attempted shield bash and ducks it, following up with a sweeping slash.

Permalink Mark Unread

She actually manages to parry the slash!

"Okay, I'm surprised I managed that," December says, backing off again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nicely done," she notes with a grin. "How's this feeling?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Much better. I think we need a shield that's actually designed for bashing though if Violet's still going to keep trying moves like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums thoughtfully and steps back to the rack of shields. "That's an interesting bit of conflict there, honestly. Hunters generally fare better with smaller shields, because we don't fight in formation, but shield bashing is better with larger shields. That can be supplemented with a gravity inlay on the shield for a knockback blast, or even just increasing the mass once it's already in motion, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was thinking of one of those round things in the center, like a metal plate."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable grabs a slightly larger buckler with a bit more of a curve to it and a shield boss in the center, and passes it to December.

Permalink Mark Unread

She passes back her first shield and settles the second on her arm.

"Alright, let's try that again."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads with a quick series of slashes, then hops back to see how December responds.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet steps in and blocks the first slash -

Permalink Mark Unread

Then December dances away from the second and third, bringing up her saber to block the fourth.

She doesn't pursue after Sable retreats, but she grins.

"Yeah," she says. "I think this suits."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent. Violet seemed to like the shield bashes, too. How does Lilian feel?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm happy December and Violet found something, but this doesn't really suit me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm... Didn't you say something about preferring to be at range earlier, anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I just feel like it's silly to get up in something's face and smack it when Dust cartridges exist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Opinions about adjourning this and going to the range with me and Ruby?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think the shield and sword combo is good for me and Violet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'll have a spar with Pyrrha. You girls have fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to, Maya."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll head off and see what Blake's up to."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable gives Maya and Jade each a goodbye kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To the range!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw, she was kind of liking meeting people.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To the range!", replies December. "Which way is that?"

She does her best to ignore the goodbye kisses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby looks sheepishly away from the goodbye kisses, blushing just a bit. "Right. This way!"

She leads the way down the hall, Sable dashing to catch up. The range is close by, and soon enough Ruby taps her scroll on a pad on the wall, and the range door opens up. There are racks of various rifles, pistols, revolvers, bows, and grenade launchers against the back wall, and five normal lanes with a sixth for explosives.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet looks over the racks of weapons.

"A rifle first, I think," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby selects a basic semi-automatic rifle and sets it on the counter at the back of the range, then gets down a box of ammo. One minor thing that's notable is the lack of ear protection. "Oh! Do you know how to reinforce your ears with your Aura?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely not, I'm still a rank beginner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay! So we're gonna start with just reinforcing your hand, because that's really easy to test. So, first step of doing stuff with Aura: feel your Aura. Look inward, not with your eyes, but with your self. Try to feel the pools of Aura each of you have. It's always easier than you expect, the first time, at least that's what Dad tells me from teaching at Signal."

Permalink Mark Unread

She feels inward.

It's sudden, how quickly it appears. An upwelling of energy, cool and crackling, like spring water all rushy in the early days of the thaw.

"I think I've got it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Now pull a bit and wrap it around your hand. The hard part is figuring out what grabbing it feels like, the rest is easy after that."

Permalink Mark Unread

How on Remnant do you grab springwater? Especially when you don't have hands?

She tries. It doesn't really work.

"It just sort of... slips through when I make a grab for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable tilts her head. "What metaphor is your Aura giving you? It's different for everyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's like a rushy spring but also like electricity. It's cold. I tried metaphorically cupping my hands but I don't... have hands?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums.

"Try putting the spring at the top of a mountain, and your extremities are at the bottom? So all the electric water just flows down there naturally?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries it.

It's not quite right, the water goes everywhere...

Mentally she constructs some dikes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh, construct some -

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, Violet. I get it.

Anyway, after some fiddling it seems to settle in.

"I think I've got it," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great job! Now, y'know how if you slap something hard enough your hand stings?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I'm familiar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Try it on the table! If you did it right, the sting will be different. Tell me how it's different when you get it right."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smacks the table firmly.*

It still hurts, but it hurts... elsewhere? Still in her hand, sort of, but it's like an echo without a source sound.

*Regrettably December does not know she is imitating Bongo Cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it worked. It feels... kind of echoey?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She pumps a fist in the air. "Yeah! You got it! Now reinforce your ears like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts in some more dikes.

"Okay, I think I've got it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great. Now to test that."

Ruby starts the process of checking the gun carefully, then loads it, performs a press-check again, then sights downrange and fires a round.

It's loud. It's every bit as loud as she'd expect a gunshot to be, but it doesn't deafen. It doesn't make December's ears ring. It just feels like a brief pressure that fades quickly.

Ruby smoothly unloads the weapon, clears the chamber, and sets everything down.

"How'd that feel?"

Permalink Mark Unread

December doesn't startle, but it's fairly clear she supressed a flinch there.

"My ears seem to be fine. No ringing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay! Time to get to know the rifle!"

The first thing Ruby points out is the barrel. "This is the barrel, aka the dangerous end. Don't point it at anything you don't imminently want a hole in."

Then she points at the trigger. "Finger stays on the guard, not the trigger, until you're ready to start putting holes in things."

She looks firmly at December. "Those, along with assume a gun is loaded until proven otherwise, are the three most important rules. Got 'em?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't point the barrel at anything that doesn't need a hole in it. Keep your booger hook off the bang switch. Guns are always loaded, especially when they're not loaded."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles for a moment and nods. "Hehe, yep. Okay, next round."

Permalink Mark Unread

She points out the safety, the magazine, the magazine release, the chamber, the slide, the semi/auto switch. She shows how to do a press-check (where you check the chamber for a round by pressing back the slide). She demonstrates how to insert the magazine, how to chamber a round, how to remove the magazine and eject the round from the chamber.

She makes safe the weapon, then sets it on the counter.

"Pick up the weapon, check the safety."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thaaat went by real fast, can you demonstrate again before I pick up the weapon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!"

She walks very slowly through it. Safety, near the trigger, easy to reach, this is safe, this is live. Magazine release, not far from that. Ejection port. How to do a press check and inspect the chamber. A reminder that removing the magazine does nothing to the chamber and that has to be cleared too.

And then the gun goes back onto the counter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. She picks up the weapon, checks the safety.

Playing with swords and sabers is fun, but this... really drives home the fact that her job, as a Huntress, is to kill things. It's not comfortable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Let me.

Permalink Mark Unread

December sets down the weapon again, careful not to sweep with the barrel or touch the trigger.

"Lilian wants to come forward, but I haven't done enough aura practice to know if I can reinforce our ears while she's forward. Probably it's best for her to repeat the practice we did earlier?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Good plan. Do you need me to repeat the explanation of the Aura practice process?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian comes forward.

"No, we share memories. I'll give it a try."

With the example of Decmber's dive in mindspace to listen to, Lilian delves deep...

What she hits is magma. Sluggish, slow-moving, burning hot. Scooping it is obviously foolhardy, but if she can... cool it, harden it to metal and stone around her ears...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, I think I've got my ear protection in place. It's easier with a direct example to work from."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great! Same instruction then: pick up the weapon, find the safety, check it, report its state."

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks up the gun, careful of her trigger and barrel discipline. This is a weapon that can make even a trained civilian dangerous to a Grimm, or to a Huntress. It deserves respect and is not a toy.

She's finally fetched up against something real in this whole wonderland.

She checks the safety. "The safety is on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Deactivate the safety and perform a press-check."

Permalink Mark Unread

She deactivates the safety and pushes back the slide. "The chamber is clear," she reports.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Pick up the magazine, insert it until it locks into place with an audible click, then chamber a round. Finally, perform another press-check, reactivate the safety, and put the weapon down."

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks up the magazine, and presses it firmly into place until it clicks, still careful of the weapon's handling.

Then she puts the safety on and puts down the weapon. "I only saw how to chamber a round once, and now it's out of my head again. I recognize this might seem excessive, but please show me again."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby smiles at Lilian. "Excessive care for safety just means you take weapons seriously. You're doing great."

She picks up the weapon, checks it carefully, and then holds it where Lilian can see as she slowly chambers a round. Then she ejects the mag, ejects the round, performs a press-check, reinserts the mag, safes the weapon, and sets it back down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright.

Lilian picks up the weapon, maintaining trigger and barrel discipline. She takes the safety off, chambers a round, press-checks the weapon and finds the round in the chamber, then puts the safety on again and puts it down. A look of concentration comes across her face as she performs each action in sequence.

"A round is chambered, safety is on," she reports.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent. Take a look here and here." She points out the simple metal sights of the rifle. "When firing, you want these to be lined up and pointed at your target. That's soon though. Next, I want you to pick the weapon up, check and disable the safety, eject the mag, clear the chamber, then enable the safety and put the weapon back down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

She picks up the weapon, once again careful of her backstop, checks the safety, turns off the safety as a separate step, ejects the mag, and clears the chamber. After seeing Ruby walk through it three times in slow-mo for her it's relatively simple.

She performs a press-check, confirming that there's no round in the chamber, then puts the safety back on and puts down the weapon.

"The chamber is clear, the safety is on," she reports.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "Good job! You're picking this up pretty quick."

She attaches a target sheet to the clips, then taps the control to send it out ten meters.

"Pick up the weapon, check safety, disable safety, press-check, insert mag, chamber round, sight the target, and then pause there."

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks up the weapon. She checks the safety. She disables the safety. She does a press-check, confirming again that there's no round in the chamber. She inserts the mag and chambers a round. She settles the rifle's stock firmly against her shoulder, sights, and stops.

"Alright," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She walks around, checks to make sure Lilian hasn't put her finger inside the trigger-guard yet, examines her posture, and nods. "Good. Uncle Qrow always says everyone should feel their first few recoils raw, so don't shield your shoulder with your Aura yet. Sight at the center of the target, slip your finger inside the guard, and squeeze the trigger once in the space between exhale and inhale. Don't pull, squeeze. Be ready for more of a kick than you expect."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sights.

She breathes, in, out...

She slips her finger inside the trigger guard and carefully rests it on the trigger.

In, out...

She squeezes lightly.

The gun kicks back against her shoulder sharply, and she winces, but keeps the weapon pointed firmly downrange.

She puts her finger firmly out of the trigger guard, and puts the safety on.

"Ow," she observes, still sighting downrange.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's like that. Put the weapon down for a moment, channel a bit of Aura to soothe your shoulder while I call back your target to take a look at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She checks the safety, makes sure it's on, and only then puts the weapon down.

"Safety is on, weapon is down, round is in the chamber."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Now to soothe your shoulder, call a little Aura there and let it sink in cozily."

She calls back the target and looks at it. Not bad. A little high and to the left, but not bad. That's what practice is for.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shifts some of her aura into her shoulder, and the ache lessens a little. Like a hot compress...

"That's quite an experience," she says. "I think I like it." She doesn't quite smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad. You're a decent shot, for a beginner."

She marks the hole she's already looked at with a marker, then sends the target sheet back.

"Reinforce your arms and shoulders, then empty the mag, one shot at a time, into the target. When you're done, check that the weapon's clear, safe it, and put it down and tell me how you feel."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

She picks up the gun, careful of her barrel and trigger discipline. She checks the safety (on).

She pours molten armor around her arm and shoulder, shielding and reinforcing it.

She turns off the safety. She does a press-check. She sights, breathes slow.

Her finger slips inside the trigger guard, and she squeezes gently in time with the emptiness of her lungs.

The gun kicks, a little less this time with her arms reinforced. It hurts, but more distantly.

She takes her finger off the trigger. She breathes, resights.

She fires again. Another shock against her shoulder. It's a little easier to ignore now.

It feels like her whole world is narrowing to the proper handling of the weapon. It's intense. Kind of meditative. High stakes, and not in a fake way.

She breathes and fires and resights and breathes and fires again until the mag is gone. It's tempting to let her trigger discipline slip a little but she holds to the familiar pattern of sighting without her finger on the trigger.

Finally it's time to put the gun down again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes another slow breath, pausing. It has been a hot minute since she last interacted with the safety.

It is here, where it has always been.

But she needs to clear the chamber first.

She does a press-check, and lo and behold there's a bullet. She must have miscounted while focusing on firing?

She puts on the safety. She removes the mag entirely. She takes the safety off again. She clears the chamber. She does a press-check again. Now there is no bullet.

She puts the safety on again and puts the weapon down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is fucking intense."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby grins at her proudly. "Isn't it!? It's so great! And you did so well, too! You didn't slip on your checks or your discipline once the whole time."

She calls back the target sheet.

"Keeping in mind that December and Violet are probably going to be getting into melee a bunch, what sort of role do you want your ranged weapon to have? And how do you feel with that much of a kick? I picked something sort of low-middle caliber for Huntress-grade rifles, so there's room in either direction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That felt good, overall. I don't have complicated thoughts, honestly, I'm still coming down from operating the thing. It's shockingly technical and high-stakes. Kind of meditative when you're into it. It's a whole experience keeping oriented to the weapon."

Lilian actually manages a slight smile. "I almost fucked up after I spent the mag downrange, there was a moment where I'd forgotten where the safety was again. So I paused, waited, let it come to me. And then I realized I needed to clear the chamber first. My instinct had been wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "The instinct will come in time. The fact that your response when you ran into an issue was to pause, breathe, and figure it out means a lot. Sable and I are the only other possible shooters here, and that means you're not going to cause a problem as easily. You'll learn to do this too, in time, but Huntresses keep our Auras up at all times on a live range, so the worst you could do to either Sable or I in an accident is spend some Aura. You could still injure yourself if you were careless enough, but you're still learning and I could catch it if something was about to happen, and Sable could put you back together from most issues. And the point is that you paused and checked and figured it out. Take a minute to stretch and settle down, get a hug if you need one, let yourself come down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. This is really real, in a way that a lot of this hasn't felt like. I would love a hug from Sable."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable's response to that is to gather Lilian into her arms and squeeze her very snugly, floofy violet tail wrapping around her as well. "Proud of you three," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lillian squeezes firmly and tightly.

"... Really glad to have met you," she murmurs in Sable's ear.

Permalink Mark Unread

How about she strokes Lilian's back, too? "Likewise."

Also, up this close, it's very easy to notice that unlike Blake, Sable does not actually have a separate pair of human ears. The fox ears just sort of stretch down the side of her head, a little fold that terminates where a human ear would be.

Permalink Mark Unread

For some damn reason that's kind of cute.

She leans in heavily for a moment, letting a bit more of her weight go onto Sable. Then she lets go, and steps back.

"... Okay," she says. "I think I'm very done for now. Let's put the weapon away. We need something to cool down after that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby nods cheerfully and packs everything up very efficiently and quickly. "Feel free to grab either of us for more range time anytime you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable smiles warmly. "What would you like to do now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

..............

She pauses for proooooobably a little too long.

Then she leans in and gently kisses Sable. On the lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's something she's very willing to do. She returns the kiss tenderly, her tail wrapping fondly around Lilian for the duration.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby blushes, watching for a moment, and then looks away, still blushing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She pulls away.

"... Thank you for giving me something real," she says. "I... For years I felt like I was drowning in an ocean of - irrelevance, uselessness, trying to get strong enough to maybe one day make a difference against Grimm..."

She runs a hand through her hair, making a small circle around her right ear and down. "But this is solid. It's meaningful. It's dangerous, yes, but so is life."

She looks away. "Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods gently. "Gladly, Lilian. You've been transplanted from the ocean of irrelevance to a highly-relevant sink-or-swim. I know how hard that is. But you're handling it. I'm impressed."

Permalink Mark Unread

She manages another small smile.

"Alright. I want... I want a date, with you. You can bring someone if you want, but... I would prefer it if I had you to myself for a little while. I don't know what to do or where to go but I don't want to waste any time doing things that aren't you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian, phrasing!

Permalink Mark Unread

I know what I said.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I guess I'm not seeing the rest of JSMN until it's time for movie night. Good thing I left today open. See ya, Ruby."

She takes Lilian's hand with a grin and starts heading for the door while she taps out a quick message into the JSMN groupchat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooooh have fun! I'll lock up here! Don't do anything Yang wouldn't do!"

Ruby waves cheerfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's Yang known for doing?", Violet asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby grins sheepishly and shakes her head. "For all the reputation she really just flirts a lot and never took it seriously. She did mostly-destroy a bar once though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet laughs. "Okay, so don't not destroy an entire bar. Got it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait no don't destroy any bars that's the wrong lesson eep!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm just messing with you. It's cool." Violet grins.

Then she looks over at Sable. "We'll figure out something."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby giggles and waves.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sable leads the way out with a grin. Absent further plans, she's heading for the dorms so they can change into non-workout clothes. "So, the traditional 'dinner and a movie' is a terrible idea, not just because we're going to be watching another movie after dinner, but because you clearly know what you want to be focusing on during this date and fictional media isn't it. I've got two ideas so far: a walk through Vale's botanical gardens followed by dinner in the city, or a hike to one of my favorite secluded overlooks with a dinner picnic. Further suggestions welcome, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's do the former, I don't want to take forever deciding and it sounds cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Sable drops Lilian off at the guest suite and ducks swiftly into JSMN's dorm to change.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeee has only a couple dresses and neither of them were really picked as datewear. Why is she worried now

Permalink Mark Unread

You've got this. I'm impressed, honestly.

Permalink Mark Unread

You kissed her! I'm flabbergasted. But if you want it that much then go and get her. I won't stand in your way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thanks, girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a star crashes down from the heavens -

Permalink Mark Unread

- something in them reaches instinctually -

Permalink Mark Unread

- but hasn't got a hope of containing it.

The star passes, still burning deep red.

Permalink Mark Unread

... well that just happened.

Permalink Mark Unread

I am really, really glad that didn't happen during weapons training.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seconded. Yeesh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Girls, we are still standing around naked in our dorm room. Get your act together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right yes okay date.

She puts on the sky-blue dress because she feels contrary, and steps out into the hall again.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she finds Sable leaning against a wall, wearing a pleated black skirt that stops just above her knees, her tail poking through a hole in the back, and a dark blue blouse, and a pair of black boots with a low heel. Her ears twitch at the sound of the door opening and she looks up with a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no she's hot.

Lilian clears her throat and smiles. "Sorry I was slow, I had another one of those things while I was changing. Nothing new gained, just..."

She trails off.

"Look, it seems pretty clear this is going to keep happening, so for right now I'd rather we just got on with our previous plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only thing to learn from it happening then is that it happened while you were changing clothes instead of training, and even then it's only one more datapoint. Onward to Vale."

She offers Lilian her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it.

... She might be smiling just a little. It's not like her to care like this but Sable makes it so easy

She looks away.

It's not usual that she feels she wants to be indirect but Sable knows what she wants anyway. She's already made it clear.

So what is this?

She guesses this is her finding out what she's in for.

She squeezes Sable's hand.

"Let's go," she says, meeting her gaze again. "You lead and I'll follow."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable leads the way to the airship docks, and they take an afternoon airship down to Vale. "This'll let us out about a fifteen minute walk from the Botanical Gardens, and it's good weather for it. There are a few restaurants in walking distance from there. What kind of food do you feel like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seafood's a good bet for me, if you know anywhere that does it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Valean or Mistrali?1 There are both close-by."

1Valean cuisine resembles both French and Italian cuisine on Earth, while MIstrali is more like East Asian or Greek (depending on where in Mistral you mean).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mistrali, please."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I have a restaurant picked out."

That determines which exit she should guide their meandering to in the garden as well, for the easiest walk to the restaurant.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good."

Lilian gets that small smile again. "Violet's been teasing me a little about my sudden decision, but, well... December already decided to try, and you just keep being good and helping us become more the people we want to be. Ruby was good to us on your behalf, and meeting everyone, seeing Ozpin together... All those days in the hospital... This new body, all the clothes you got us..."

She lays her head back against the wall of the airship. "I'm not used to thinking with my heart. But it's saying something loud and clear right now. I want to know you."

Permalink Mark Unread

If you know what I mean.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shush, Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles warmly. "I'm glad. I'm really really glad. I... I do a lot of different things to help people in different ways, but what I'm about at the end of the day is seeing people blossom into who their souls cry out to be. Every time I see that happen I feel better, like the world around me is a little bit less broken. At the start, when I first agreed to treat you, that was why I did it and why I pushed to do that transition. As for what came after?"

She shrugs, still smiling.

"I'd gotten a pretty close look at who you three were trying to become, at that point, and I knew I wanted — and still want — to see that happen first-hand."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian nods. "That makes a lot of sense. No-one could ever accuse you of caring too little."

She looks out the window of the airship. "I'll do my best to give you sometning worth seeing."

Permalink Mark Unread

If you know what I -

Permalink Mark Unread

Shush, Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lifts Lilian's hand to her lips and kisses the knuckles lightly. "I have every faith you'll manage that handily."

Permalink Mark Unread

A little pinkness rises to her cheeks.

"... Thank you," she says, for a lack of anything better to say.

Permalink Mark Unread

Victory.

"I will confess," she adds as an afterthought, "that the Mistrali seafood place is Eastern Mistrali, not Western,* if you happened to be hoping for the latter."

*Eastern Mistrali culture more closely resembles Earth's East Asian cultures, while Western more closely resembles Greek and Lebanese.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, that's perfectly fine to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh good. I make a point to get Blake and Jade to give me second opinions about every seafood place I think might be good, because I trust that their standards are higher than mine on the subject. We haven't found a Western Mistrali place that meets their standards yet. There was one in Mantle, but this isn't Mantle."

She squeezes Lilian's hand and watches both her and the scenery. There are a few other students on the airship, but they're far enough away that they're not listening in.

"What's your favorite flower?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Am I too predictable if I say lilies?"

The side of her mouth quirks up.

"More seriously, I like poppies. They're bright. Cheerful. They remind me there's good things in the world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Both good choices, and anyone who'd knock you for naming yourself after a favorite flower can fuck off. Am I a cliché for doing the reverse and saying orchids and dahlias?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure I've ever seen a dahlia before. Orchids are a classic pick though, for all that they're quite delicate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're lovely, and they have a great display of them in the garden we're visiting, so you'll get to see them first-hand. As for orchids, they remind me of how delicate the flourishing of a life can be. I will admit, though, that I first picked them for the color." She gestures up at her hair with a grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awww. Of course."

Lilian settles her hands in her lap.

"It would be lovely to see your favorite flower. Something new."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, I wonder how many new-to-you experiences I can find? That'll be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's only been a dozen in the past week. It's like you're not even trying."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and smiles. "Clearly I have to step up my game. Only a dozen new experiences, and most of them weren't even very datelike. What am I even doing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seriously though, thank you. December's the one who had the heart to heart, but, like... I exist as a whole separate person now thanks to you. That's something I can never really repay."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes and smiles and looks down at her hands. "Just, y'know, had to be done. I couldn't really choose anything else, y'know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. That's just the kind of person you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eep. She blushes some more. "Gosh, all the praise. I'm gonna combust over here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean honestly, you spend weeks looking after a girl you hardly know in hospital and there are going to be consequences."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes and grins. "I'm doomed, clearly. Brave Huntress trainee slain by compliments."

She shakes her head. "Seriously, though, you're worth it." And then she silences any attempt at return fire with a kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian kisses back, softly, unhurriedly.

This feels so much better than with Jason.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a soft, lingering kiss, she pulls back and just gazes softly at Lilian. Does she look a bit besotted? Yes. Does she care? No.

And then the airship lands.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, phooey

Well, she has an entire date to spend together with Sable. She can't kiss her for all of it.

She gets up from her seat and offers her hand.

"Lead on," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes Lilian's hand with a grin and leads the way out onto the airship terminal, which is bustling with a little bit of traffic: people getting in from extended trips, people returning from facilities just outside the walls, Huntsmen getting back from missions, and more.

They start walking toward the exit.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's strange, being back in Vale with Sable. It feels a little like two worlds are colliding that shouldn't.

She squeezes Sable's hand, and follows.

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes back, and keeps leading the way out onto the streets. It's a short walk, and the fall afternoon weather is pleasant enough. People meander about their daily lives. Sable smiles, watching them go by. There are bakeries, Dust shops, convenience stores, and more.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's an unfamiliar part of town for her - she's never had a reason to fly anywhere before - but it's still Vale, and that matters.

She follows along and people-watches.

Permalink Mark Unread

People sit at tables outside cafés, while others sweep the sidewalk in front of their stores. A couple kids — two Humans and a Faunus — run up to a comic book shop together.

"Even after two years, the contrast between Mantle and Vale still feels sharp to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never been to Mantle before. I've just been stuck here. What was Mantle like, comparatively? Better? Worse?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums for a moment, tail swishing as she thinks. "Mantle is colder, for one, but I don't think that's quite what you're looking for. Hmm... Mantle is starker, with discrimination being more blatant when it's present. At the same time, there's a fierce sense of community, of Mantle sticking together against the economic bullshit from Atlas."

She nods at the three kids, who've now stepped inside the comic shop. The shopkeep, visible through the window, closes a glass display door over some figurines. "Something like that would never happen in Mantle. It would be all or nothing, either the Faunus kid wouldn't be let in or the shopkeep would welcome them gladly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Says the girl who can't decide whether or not she wants to -

Permalink Mark Unread

Not funny, Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Life in Vale is... it's hard to know who your friends are, around here. Even if you're not a Faunus."

She taps her chin.

"You're different from that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Lilian a warm smile. "Give yourself a little credit, Lilian. So're you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian looks away. "Yeah, I guess so. It's maybe foolish of me to trust you so fast, but..."

She looks back at Sable. "I guess I feel that a person who does so many real things can't be fake."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable laughs and pulls Lilian into a hug. "You're going to swell my ego at this rate."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lillian takes the opportunity to wrap her arms around Sable's waist.

"Maybe you deserve that," she says softly in Sable's ear.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes, smiles, and buries her face in Lilian's shoulder just a bit. She can't win here. She'll just blush and hug the pretty girl she's taking on a date.

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes, gently.

She really is awfully fond of this girl.

After a moment, she releases her.

"Botanical gardens," she says brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Botanical gardens!"

And, sure enough, after they walk one more block and turn the corner, there are the botanical gardens!

Flowering vines twine around and through the wrought iron of the gate, making the entryway a riot of oranges and greens. Visitors walk freely in and out, with no ticket gate or fee or check-in. Beyond the gates, Lilian can see a row of trees bedecked in vividly red and orange and yellow leaves, above a terraced collection of brilliantly flowering poppies.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gosh, already this is really beautiful. I can't believe I've never been here before..."

Her gaze lingers on the poppies, then moves on to the trees above.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was delighted when I found out Vale's gardens are free to the public. Mantle doesn't have their own, just people's individual gardens outside their homes, and Atlas's gardens are expensive to keep the 'wrong sort' out. But Vale knows what's up."

The trees seem to be some variety of maple, with multi-pointed leaves. The entry path hits a T-junction here, with frilly little white flowers off to the right, and chrysanthemums to the left.

Permalink Mark Unread

Little white flowers are well enough, but she prefers the chrysanthemums. She'll wander that way slowly.

"Vale has a few things like that," she says. "There's also a public library I used to go to. December would take out books on Dust manufacture when she was small and didn't have to hold down a job."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then chrysanthemumward they go! A spectrum of 'mums gives way to coneflowers and Mistrali anemones, then black-eyed susans, and then a riot of azaleas in yellow, orange, red, and pink.

"That sounds adorable, frankly. Smol December just sitting there with a book on Dust engineering in the library," she shakes her head and grins wide. "She'll definitely enjoy the weapon design process, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is really gorgeous."

Lilian smiles slightly. "Yeah, she had big dreams. The family wasn't so supportive - since when does that change - but she tried her best. And now we're going to get to learn it up close and personal."

She leans against Sable's side. "But enough about her, this is a date for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

She wraps an arm around Lilian's waist, and her tail wraps softly just below that. "You're right. It is. So tell me about your big dreams, Lilian Morning-Glory. I know on the range you mentioned something about making a difference against the Grimm, and I know you've only.had your own space in the mind to think about it for one chaotic week, but I wanna hear it, even if it's rambling and only half-figured-out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was saving, before all this. Getting money together for... I don't know what. Something worth doing. I think I kind of wanted to get an education of some kind, but that was mostly December's idea... I just knew that money was real and could be used to some end, eventually. And then my carefully laid plans were all disrupted..."

She looks out over the azaleas. "I dreamed of a future that would be better, somehow, but I never really put together a solid plan. I just thought that eventually I'd be free of the foster family and then... who knows what."

Lilian looks over at Sable. "But I guess I'm a Huntress now, so I had better learn to be a good one. It's not a forgiving profession."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "No, it's not. There's room in it for lots of kinds of Huntress, though. Thanks to how much respect there is for individual fighting styles, as long as the Grimm get dead and you save who you can, people won't complain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Simple and stark. I like that. I like problems I can reduce to equations or items on a list. A series of steps to achieve it."

She looks over at Sable. "Step one, kiss the beautiful girl who introduced me to weapons handling. Step two, go on a date to a lovely botanical garden. You know, that sort of thing. It hides all the messiness of life. Makes me feel like I'm in control."

Permalink Mark Unread

They reach an arrangement of lilies in pinks and whites, before a small bridge over a stream.

"Step three," Sable replies with a blush, "spin the beautiful newly-awakened Huntress into a low dip," she places a hand at the small of Lilian's back and another at her shoulder blades as she puts word to deed, tail hooking around her hips, "and kiss her."

She presses a gentle, lingering, tender kiss to Lilian's lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes deeply and lets herself be kissed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable sets Lilian back on her feet among the lilies, blushing a bit as well.

"Step four, show her a gorgeous display of her namesake flower that doesn't quite match her beauty."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins, she can't help it. She's being romanced. With lists

"Go on," she says, that ridiculous smile still on her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Step five," she leads Lilian over the bridge, beyond which dahlias fountain up all around them in a riot of oranges and magentas and violets and reds, surrounding a core of gorgeous black dahlias.

"Show her something she's never seen before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

She leans in and inspects one of the flowers, a deep black one.

"It has so many petals! You wouldn't think you could fit that many petals on a flower, and yet..."

She smiles and leans a little against Sable's side. "That's a really good step five."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles warmly. "I know, right? These are dahlias, my favorite flower. And I'm glad you liked step five."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought they might be."

She interlaces her fingers with Sable's, and squeezes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable squeezes back and leads the way onward. "Step six," she says as they approach an ivy-wrapped gate on the far side of the gardens, with a few restaurants visible a couple blocks down, "treat the pretty girl to her choice of delicious meal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think step six is actually 'go to the restaurant,' but that's nonetheless a good step six."

She wanders onward, in no rush. It feels good to share this time with Sable.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You may have a point," she replies with a grin and a giggle. "I'm prone to skipping steps once in a while, but this is the sort of thing that's really worth lingering on."

She pulls Lilian into a gentle embrace and kisses her softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses, then nuzzles into Sable's shoulder a little.

For some damn reason she's feeling vulnerable again.

The feeling passes after a few moments of holding, and then she steps back and smiles.

"Alright," she says. "Lead on, bold Huntress."

Permalink Mark Unread

After a few blocks, with Sable throwing a few fond grins and lingering smiles at Lilian along the way, they reach a Mistrali restaurant named the Golden Lotus. The facade is elegant and wooden, with golden flourishes carved around the doors and windows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian looks up at the facade. "My. Looks fancy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Surprisingly inexpensive, actually. One of those delightful rarities: good food in a good location for an impressively good price."

She opens the door, and they're greeted by a black-haired Faunus girl in a snug Mistrali dress, a pair of pointed canine ears sitting atop her head. "Good evening and welcome to the Golden Lotus. Would you like to sit inside or on the terrace, tonight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'd prefer the terrace. Is that alright with you, Sable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Favorite spot to sit when I come here, even,"

And so the hostess leads them to a staircase, and up to the roof, where small tables overlook the street below, and the gardens can be seen in the distance. They're seated at a table near the edge, with an excellent view, and given a pair of menus. "Anything to drink for now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know, you seem to be a person I'm getting a lot of firsts from - first time seeing a dahlia, first time holding a rifle, first time being myself - so it kind of feels appropriate to have another one of those. And I've never tried wine, which is... perhaps the expected thing to do on a date at a fancy restaurant?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm. We could do that. Would you rather a Valean-style grape wine, or a Mistrali rice wine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think Valean-style wine is more the classic date thing, but I don't have any actual experience with either, so if you recommend the rice wine more highly I have no reason to refuse that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How's tonight's fish special, Calla, and what would you recommend with it?"

"Well," the hostess replies, "tonight's special is baked salmon with a mirin, garlic, and ginger marinade. I think it's the best thing on the menu tonight, and you usually can't tear me away from the beef even though we're known for our seafood. It should go very nicely with a bottle of sake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'll try that," Lilian says. "It sounds lovely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then that'll be two fish specials and a bottle of sake for the table, and a big appetizer platter of dumplings to split. Thank you, Calla."

The dog Faunus notes it all down with a smile, nods, and hurries off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So," she says. "Now we get to find out if I'm a lightweight." She smiles wryly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles back. "If all else fails, I can teach you how to burn alcohol off with your Aura."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now that's a useful ability. I guess the job really does come with upsides."

Some silly part of her wants to nudge Sable's foot with hers beneath the table but they haven't even gotten their food yet. There is such a thing as being too schmoopy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is there? Is there really?

"It really does." She sips her water and smiles. "There are a lot of little tricks one can do with Aura. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch I still don't know, and I've been collecting 'em for years."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes a sip of her own water.

"And I guess I'll get to learn them all too," she says. "Any particularly cool ones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and grins. "Kinda minor and vain, but there's an Aura-boundary hack you can do to make sure polish never sticks outside the lines when painting your nails. It's related to the trick that helps with keeping clean on long hikes, but the hike one is less preventative and more after the fact."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds convenient. I'm sure Violet will be interested in that one."

Lilian tilts her head slightly. "So you've been here before with the team? I'm sorry, I'm still having a little trouble keeping everyone straight, I know it was a specific member or two."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No worries. Yeah, JSMN has come here as a group before, and I've taken Jade here solo a couple times. Jade, along with Blake of RWBY, are the biggest seafood-lovers on our teams, and so they always check out seafood places."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep that in mind. It would be nice to get to know the team better... If you'd like to tell me about some of your adventures I wouldn't mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "Any particular flavor of adventure you'd like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something light, if you've got it. I know you've got a pretty dense past but for right now I want to emphasize the softer side."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head and hums thoughtfully. "Okay, I've got a couple. Most of these were things we did for free, just trying to make things better around Mantle, rather than the actually paying jobs. One time, old Mrs. Soot — she insisted we call her Grandma Soot, lived a few blocks away from the warehouse, gave us home-baked food sometimes — came to us and let us know her cat had gotten stuck in a tree. When we went out to look, the tree was three stories tall and the cat was at the top. Jade just kicked off and flew up, and the cat must've figured she was the biggest non-Grimm bird it'd seen and pounced her. When she landed, it was gnawing on her wrist. And that's why Jade swore off non-Faunus cats."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian laughs. "Getting cats out of trees, huh? Clearly you've always been destined for heroic exploits."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and shrugs. "I never could turn people down when they were in need. Another time, a little boy fell in one of the rivers. In winter. We just lucked out and happened to be in the area. I ran ahead while Neo dropped a conjured obstacle to slow his progress down the river, then just stripped down to my bra and a pair of shorts and dove into the water. Fuck it was cold. But Neo slowed the kid down enough that I was able to grab him, and then I grabbed something on the shore with my whip and reeled us in."

At this point a waitress arrives with sake, two small cups, and an enormous plate of gyoza with dipping sauce.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow. That's quite the story."

And then Lily is quite distracted by the gyoza. "... Oooh," she says. "I love these things. Mind if I start?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go right ahead!"

She busies herself with pouring them each a cup of sake, and then grabs a dumpling for herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lily takes three dumplings and places them on her side plate, eats one, then takes her cup of sake in hand.

"Here goes," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She raises hers toward Lilian in a brief toast. "To new beginnings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To new beginnings."

She takes a sip and lets it linger on her palate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable does the same. The sake is quite warm, very smooth, and has an almost-sweet taste to it. The impression is very light and almost-creamy, except for all the ways it's not actually creamy or a dairy product at all. It's comparatively pleasant, as alcohols go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh.

The alcohol is something she's definitely going to need to get used to, but it's eminently drinkable.

She swallows.

"That's actually pretty decent. I'm definitely not used to the taste of alcohol, but I could get used to that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and smiles. "Sake's probably my favorite of the category, but I don't drink very often. Stick to celebrations, that sort of thing."

She piles a few dumplings onto a side plate as well and digs in. They're quite good.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can see why you like it. I've heard grape wines can be quite astringent."

And she'll continue to work on her gyoza. The pile diminishes a bit as she takes another set of three.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable does the same, slowly working through hers and then refilling her plate, sticking just a helping behind Lilian so her date can absolutely get as many as she'd like. "They really can be. It's nice, when you're used to it, but it's probably more of an adjustment than sake is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw.

Sable's so giving

She stops with a handful of gyoza left. "I'd like to save room for the special, so feel free to take what's left. Or we can box it for later."

Permalink Mark Unread

She steals one more, then nods and giggles.

"We can box it. Maybe even share with the other girls, if you want."

She has another sip of sake.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian takes another sip of sake, savouring it on her tongue. It's still a little harsh, but it's new and she's doing it with Sable.

She smiles a little, looking across the table at her date. It's just... nice to be with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable grins warmly back. It really is. "Let's see, any other stories that aren't just slamming the SDC's legbreakers against the pavement until they stop? Hmm... Oh! Neo and Roman have a ridiculous game. He's a master thief and all, but every time we see him, Neo steals his hat. The very first time was the best, though, because he came to visit us at the warehouse just a few days after we'd first met him, and he didn't realize it was gone until he was leaving. He was utterly gobsmacked that this tiny girl had managed to get one over on him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heh. That is a ridiculous game. You should buy an identical hat to his and give it to Neo so she can fake him out with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "It gets better. So the next day, he comes back, and there's that black bowler sitting right atop his head. Neo is stunned. Absolutely shocked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And they've just been trading it back and forth ever since, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head and grins. "She runs back to where she'd stashed it, and there it still is. She comes back out and stares, stunned, between the bowler on his head and the one in her hands, for a few minutes. He utterly refuses to acknowledge that the previous bowler even exists. And then she scowls and nods. And now she's got a box full of the things, and we have absolutely no fucking clue where he keeps getting more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, that really appeals to my sense of humor. A whole pile of bowlers and no obvious source is more fun than just trading it back and forth." She grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and nods. "Neo even spent a day shadowing him. He just suddenly had another at one point, and he wasn't even anywhere near his house or any of his stashes when it happened. It's not even his Semblance, either. That's a coordination and recon thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you imagine that semblance? My soul has decreed that I have infinite bowler hats."

Permalink Mark Unread

She dissolves into giggles at that point. Thankfully, the waitress interrupts her gigglefit by dropping off their meals. Two plates of delicious-looking baked salmon fillets.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian smiles and ducks her head and accepts her plate. "I wonder what item I'd get as my infinite bowler hat semblance. Maybe hair ties?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could be pretty convenient. Easy to lose those."

She takes a bite of the fish. It's sweet and flavorful and perfectly done, with bits of ginger and garlic.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes a forkful of her fish as well.

She chews, swallows.

"... Wow, that's worth the whole trip all by itself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know, right? Their fish is some of the best in Vale. It's only affordable because the owners are committed to staying accessible, and because the worst of the rich assholes refuse to come to a Faunus-owned restaurant." She shrugs. "Their loss."

She has another sip of sake, and pours refills if they need it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have some more sake, sure.

"I'm really glad you showed me this place. One more thing to add to your list. It's just getting longer and longer."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans across the small table and presses a gentle kiss to Lilian's lips. "And I'll keep showing you more new things until long after you lose count, if you let me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian ducks her head. "You know I like a girl with a long list. And several dozen loaner bowler hats."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles tenderly, and then sporfles abruptly at the reminder of the hats.

"Oh good. Finally, a use for them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could give one to everyone on the team, make it part of your collective uniform."

She takes another forkful of her salmon.

"Mmmm... I may have to take some time from the conversation just to eat this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Extremely valid."

She takes a bite of her own fish and mostly succeeds at stifling a moderately indecent noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a smile from Lilian.

And she is going to focus on eating this heavenly salmon now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Several blissful minutes later, their plates are empty and the waitress is offering a dessert menu if they'd like one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dessert would just be the capstone on this excellent meal.

"I would love a dessert menu, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable would love one as well. She looks over the menu after they've each been handed one. In addition to typical options like cheesecake, the Golden Lotus also offers "chocolate pear ice cream", which is hazelnut ice cream, molded into the shape of a pear, and then encased in a chocolate shell.

"The chocolate pear is really good," Sable notes, ordering one for herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have one too, then. Your recommendation for the main course was absolutely worth it, so..."

Permalink Mark Unread

The waitress collects their menus and departs.

Sable just smiles sappily at Lilian for a moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

... She leans in and kisses her.

"We are such a sappy couple."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable returns the kiss happily. "We are. It may be my fault. I have a sappy streak as big as campus."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "So," she says.

She pauses.

So after this...

The words won't quite come.

She runs a hand through her hair. "This has been really, really fun so far," she says. "Dessert might be more than I can take on top of all this." She smiles slightly. "But I've already ordered, oh no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no," she replies with a grin, "you're clearly doomed to being overwhelmed by a delightful evening. However shall you cope?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"However will I cope indeed." She smiles, ducks her head. "The more I learn about you the more I like you. You just..  Yeah." She touches her lips with her thumbnail. "You're just so good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's the point of having lovely people around if you can't spend time being good to them?" She shakes her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable thinks she's lovely!!!

She blushes a little deeper.

"Yeah," she says. "That's why I asked for this whole outing with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah," she says with a knowing grin, "you clearly already know me quite well, and have realized that my perfect gift is an opportunity to arrange a lovely time for a beautiful, clever, fascinating girl that I'm falling for. I'm touched."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," Lilian says. "I think I'm falling for you too."

It's so easy to say.

It's only after she says it that she really realizes it's true.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable reaches out and brings Lilian's hand to her lips, kissing the knuckles lightly. "What a terrible fate, to find myself falling for a beautiful new Huntress. I'm doomed."

And that's when the waitress returns with dessert. She awwwwws as she puts the plates and spoons down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian ducks her head, suddenly shy. It's new to be seen in public with... her girlfriend.

"Thank you," she says to the waitress. And she looks back at Sable and brushes back her hair around her ear.

"Yeah," she says. "You're so doomed."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes a bite of the pear, cutting through the edge of the chocolate shell with her spoon, and sighs happily. The hazelnut ice cream complements the chocolate shell wonderfully.

"Fair warning, you three are doomed as well. The other girls trust my taste enough that they're going to all be aiming for 'get to know you' activities and dates and date-like things over the next week or three."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no. Whatever shall we do." Lily deadpans.

Then she smiles. "... It'll be good to get to know them all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bet you'll like 'em." Sable honestly hasn't spent much time not grinning, tonight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet I will. Ruby was so patient with me during the training earlier. And Jade can fly, so what's not to like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and nods. "Although I'm not dating Ruby."

Yet, at least. She's noticed a few of those sappy looks directed her way. It's not something she'll rule out.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Neo's got good taste in movies and hats, too. So really it's Maya who I don't know as much about. But I think I'll get to know her in time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's pretty easy to get to know. Very much a patient sort."

Gradually the ice cream disappears and the waitress drops off the check. Sable takes a look, nods, and sets a bank card down on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She fishes through her pockets and gets her own wallet, and brings out her card.

"I know you probably want this to be your treat, but... We can split it." She ducks her head. "I think you've done enough good things for me already tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and sighs fondly. "I suppose," she assents, drawing the last word out a bit melodramatically before sliding the check tray across so Lilian can put her card in as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian adds her card, and reaches out and brushes a strand of Sable's violet hair out of her face.

She smiles, a little lost for words.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes and smiles sappily, not really paying a lot of attention as the check is taken away, the cards are charged, and the receipt and cards are brought back.

She squeezes Lilian's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes back.

Sable is just... so sweet

She picks up her card and puts it back in her wallet.

"Well," she says. "I guess it's back to Beacon for us..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts her card away and nods, checking the time. "Oh, it looks like the airship we're likely to catch should put us down just before the cafeteria opens up for dinner."

She stands up and offers Lilian her hand. "Shall we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes Sable's hand.

Returning to the academy seems like such a chore after all this.

Still, she'll have Sable with her...

So anywhere is fine.

"Alright," she says. "Let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable leads the way out of the restaurant, thanking their waitress, and then Calla (the hostess) with a charming smile, and they find themselves back on the street, heading toward the airship terminal. It's a very pleasant early evening, the air nicely crisp against their skin, Sable's tail swishing in time with her steps, and she gives Lilian occasional fond hand-squeezes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian squeezes back, and walks with Sable...

She wants to be closer, though.

"... could we walk arm in arm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable's response to that is to pull Lilian closer, slip her arm through hers, and wrap her tail around Lilian's waist.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian settles her own arm around Sable's waist, and goes onward.

... This is good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, this certainly makes the walk back delightfully cozy, and soon enough they're settling into a bench seat together on the airship, cuddled close.

Permalink Mark Unread

She settles gently into Sable for the flight home. It has been such a good date.

Permalink Mark Unread

And another star flares and falls.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't even try for it. She's far too caught up in this beautiful girl she's come so close to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable, as tangled up in physical contact as she is, can't help but notice the star go by. But she doesn't remark on it, instead just pressing a tiny kiss to Lilian's temple.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian lays her head on Sable's shoulder, and stays close.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable sighs, softly and contentedly, and strokes Lilian's hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they can stay settled together like that for their whole trip back to the academy.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sable can walk Lilian back to the door of the guest suite, press a soft kiss to her lips, and say, "This date has been a delight, and thank you for suggesting it and accompanying me on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses back.

She looks away.

"... This has been really wonderful," she says. "I don't want it to end at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you'd like, no one expects to see or hear from either of us for nearly two hours still," Sable replies with a playful smirk, before kissing Lilian again, a bit deeper.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

Yeah, she guesses she has been that transparent.

She kisses back, and gets the door to her room.

"Then there's no reason not to spend some more time together."

She has no idea how to do this but she's going to try anyway.

"... You can come in," she says, barely above a whisper.

Permalink Mark Unread

She follows Lilian in, and kisses her again, deeply, burying one hand in her hair and resting the other on her hip.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian sighs into the kiss, and kisses back, a little more hesitantly.

She steps back and carefully closes the door, then goes and sits on her bed.

"I..."

Everyone's okay with this, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright, then shut up and stop paying attention for a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure thing, boss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good luck.

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks up at Sable and twists a strand of her hair around two fingers.

"... Just checking with the other girls that they're okay with this, and then telling them to buzz off."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable grins and nods. "Eminently reasonable. They can chase their own first times with me another day, if they'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits down next to Lilian, cups her cheek, kisses her again, softly, and nips her lower lip lightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian kisses back gently, her lips meeting Sable's, her hand slipping out to tangle in Sable's hair.

It's strange. It feels familiar, somehow.

She guesses she has been getting a lot of practice kissing Sable today.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable shifts over and straddles Lilian's lap, then deepens the kiss. Her tail wraps tightly around Lilian's waist and her hands bury in her hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Oh gosh.

She presses up against Sable and kisses back, her hands settling on her back and... her ass. Definitely her ass.

Her breath's coming faster already. She has no idea how any of this works but her body seems to know what to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Don't worry, Sable knows all about how this works. She's breathing a bit faster too, kissing Lilian hungrily, and rolling her hips just a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses back as well, but her hands are too shy to grasp at Sable's clothing and pull it aside. This is so much.

She digs her fingers into Sable's hair and kisses her harder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable, after a few minutes of delighting in this, pulls one of Lilian's hands out of her hair and drags it down to her breasts. She keeps making out wantonly and rolling her hips, sighing hotly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, okay, she can take a hint.

She starts squeezing and stroking at Sable through her shirt, her body moving against Sable's, her eyes slipping shut as she glories in the kisses and the touches...

Permalink Mark Unread

That touch will get rewarded with a little bit of a moan, and Sable rolls her hips a bit faster, one of her own hands coming down from Lilian's hair to gently caress a breast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh gosh those are sensitive now. She lets out a small undignified noise and shudders all over, her fingers still squeezing at Sable's breast.

"Fuck," she breathes. "Th-that's new."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and smirks, cheeks flushed. "Sensitive, aren't they?"

Her blouse gets pulled up over her head and tossed aside, revealing perky breasts supported by a lacy bra in a very dark purple. Then she kisses Lilian some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." And then Sable's blouse is off. Oooh.

She cups one of Sable's breasts through her bra.

She gets to do that?

She gets to do that.

She kisses Sable back, and strokes through the thin material, and presses Sable in with her hand against her ass. Maximum skin contact good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable moans into the kiss and grinds against Lilian through her dress. More skin contact is a great idea. She tugs lightly at the dress.

Permalink Mark Unread

... Yeah, this dress can come off. She feels shy but that can shut up, honestly, she is kissing her girlfriend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Sable can rise up on her knees enough to not be pinning the dress against Lilian and help slip it up her body and up over her head and off. It, too, gets tossed out of the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's still wearing the plain grey panties and bra that Sable got her in hospital, but now there's quite a bit of exposed skin - her shoulders, her midriff, her bare arms and thighs...

She leans in and buries her face in Sable's shoulder and kisses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable gasps at that for a moment, then pushes Lilian back onto the bed, kissing her jaw, down her neck, over the crook and onto her shoulder, down onto her collarbone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Oh fuck.

Lillian arches under Sable and lets out a quiet curse as those lips go wandering across her body. It's amazing. Incredible.

She grabs Sable solidly and just holds on, little shuddery moans spilling from her lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable kisses and nips up and down Lilian's neck, across her collarbone, and over every inch of skin above the neckline of that grey sports bra, all the while grinding against Lilian through her panties.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian's breathing is getting awful rapid but she has absolutely nowhere to go right now.

She presses in against Sable and lets out a soft mewl that's maybe pleased and maybe stressed. It is a very interesting noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable reaches behind her back and unhooks her bra, and midnight-purple lace falls away, letting her tits bounce free. She keeps kissing and nipping, but pauses just long enough to murmur in Lilian's ear, "You can touch anywhere you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

The moment's relief helps.

She scrapes together her last two brain cells and strokes and massages Sable's tits again, this time against the bare skin. Her fingers press in to the bare flesh, leaving little indentations.

As Sable grinds into her sex through her panties, waves of heat and pleasure wash through her whole body. It's electric, amazing. It makes her want to cry out but she has to hold it in she is in a public dorm room -

She kisses Sable's shoulder instead, then brings in her teeth and nips in return.

Permalink Mark Unread

Those nips prompt some gasps and breathy little moans out of Sable, and she arches her back. "Fuck yes."

After a bit more moaning and caressing and nipping, Sable gasps out, "We are both still wearing too many clothes. I want you inside me."

And she stands up, unsnaps the tail loop of her skirt, and shimmies it down her hips, revealing somewhat damp panties in matching midnight-purple lace to the since-discarded bra. Those get shimmied down quickly as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her gaze snaps down to Sable's pussy. It's the first time she's seen one in person and she can't seem to tear her gaze away.

"... That's one hell of a first," she says, blushing incredibly pink. "But yeah. I want it too."

Some annoying insistent part of her brain prods her with a distinctly unsexy necessity.

"Um... Contraception?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aura can improve bottom surgery to a near-perfect result, but not to the point of letting a trans girl carry children. Thankfully, in my case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," Lilian says. "Oh."

She grins and pulls off her own panties, her stiff cock falling free of the grey cloth. "Alright. I trust you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable leans forward and starts pulling that sports bra upward, kissing every inch of newly-exposed Lilian as she goes. When she uncovers her nipples, she wraps her lips around first one, then the other, sucking and licking gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh that can't go unchallenged.

Lilian reaches out and lays a hand on Sable's bare pussy, and strokes gently, rubbing in her palm.

"Wow," she says, her voice hushed. "You're drooling all over my hand..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable flushes brightly and bites her lip. "Hhhaaaah."

Nope, that needs a response. She finishes pulling Lilian's bra off and tosses it aside, then wraps a hand around her shaft and strokes gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't have words. So she kisses Sable deeply instead, and strokes a little firmer, and lets the tension build in her body with every touch...

She's having sex she's having sex she's having sex -

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable moans into the kiss, and then pulls Lilian further onto the bed and straddles her hips, grinding her pussy slickly along the length of her cock. She caresses one of Lilian's breasts and kisses her deeply.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian bucks instinctually, then closes her eyes and lets out a shuddering breath.

When she opens her eyes again a deep and genuine grin's come to her face.

"Alright," she says. "I'm ready." Her hand strokes slowly down along Sable's front, between her breasts, over her heart and then down along her midriff.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable grins back, delighted, and lifts up enough to line Lilian's cock up with her entrance.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then slowly sinks down with a long, heated sigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Lilian is enveloped in sweet, slick heat.

Her fingers fall to Sable's hips and she squeezes tight, tight, tight.

Holy shit

She closes her eyes and just breathes for a little bit to let the pleasure spread out into her limbs and extremities.

Then she leans in and kisses Sable, slowly, unhurriedly. Like she has all the time in the world.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable returns the kiss, sighing into it tenderly, savoring the blissful fullness for a long few moments, before very slowly lifting up, and pushing back down. "Fuck."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Lilian's hips roll instinctually, and a flash of white-hot pleasure drives the sentence she was planning on entirely from her brain. Instead she moans, long and low, and presses herself hard against Sable.

"F-fuck, I... Wow..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, then captures Lilian's lips in a kiss and moans, riding up and back down once more, grinding her clit against Lilian at the bottom of the thrust.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shudders, another tide of pleasure rolling through her, and moves instinctually back, and gasps

"I-I'm not going to be able to - mmmmmanage much of this," she pants, her fingers tracing along Sable's back. "You're so much."

Permalink Mark Unread

She stills her hips, smiles, and nods, slipping one hand down between them to stroke her clit. "I'm not far behind," she nips Lilian's neck, "so don't you worry," another nip, a little lower, "about a thing."

She breathes a little shakier, her walls clenching around Lilian's shaft as she fingers herself closer and closer to the edge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian nods, relief washing over her, and buries her head against sable's shoulder and moves, abandoning herself to instinct, her hips a little jerky, her teeth nipping and biting, her eyes closed and her body rolling in hard -

Permalink Mark Unread

And then Sable moves in time with her, matching every thrust, continuing to stroke her clit until finally she moans, long and high and shuddery, her pussy clenching and fluttering around Lilian's cock, desperately throwing herself into every motion as she rides that blissful peak.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian hasn't got a hope of surviving that.

So she just lets go.

Her body shudders and white-hot pleasure engulfs her as she spends herself deep inside Sable, her body flooding with heat and relief and electric joy as she finally surrenders to the sensations and tips over the edge.

She pants out a high, breathy whimper, then presses firmly against Sable as she gradually comes down from the peak.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable sags against Lilian and squeezes her tightly, sighing contentedly. "Fuck that was lovely."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian nuzzles into sable and sighs softly, her body suffused with a warm glow.

"Yeah," she murmurs. "That was - incredible."

Permalink Mark Unread

She presses a line of gentle kisses into Lilian's cheek. She wiggles contentedly, holding her girlfriend close.

Permalink Mark Unread

... wow.

If I die tomorrow in a training accident on the range it will have all been worth it.

She doesn't quite say it. It's a little too morbid for this moment.

"... thank you," she says instead. "I... never dreamed I'd get this far."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins. "If I get my way, you'll get farther still."

She kisses Lilian again, on the lips.

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses back and hums softly.

"... You're so good to me," she says. "So kind. So thoughtful."

Her gaze flicks down along Sable's nude body. "So hot."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes and grins wider (and a bit sappily), then boops Lilian's nose. "Pot, kettle, Miss Gorgeous."

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes and smiles and holds Sable close.

... "I can't believe I just did that."

She giggles and kisses Sable again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You did, and I, for one, am very glad of that fact."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles again. She can't help it.

"Yeah, I could tell you enjoyed that." She blushes and grins and hugs Sable close. "What an experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and nuzzles her face into Lilian's neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

She just holds Sable for a little while, stroking her hand through her hair gently.

What a day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable just sighs contentedly and snuggles in Lilian's arms. Such a lovely day.

Permalink Mark Unread

She breathes slowly, and settles in for a little while.

Eventually, though...

"Your team's going to be expecting us," she says softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs and grins and stretches. "They will. I should maybe go borrow your bathroom for just a moment, freshen up a little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please, go ahead."

She doesn't want to be parted from this beautiful wonderful girl, but needs must.

Permalink Mark Unread

She slowly gets up from the cuddle and starts collecting clothes from the floor, even tossing her blouse up to her hands with a flick of her tail. Thus gathered, she sashays into the bathroom and washes up.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sits up and takes a heavy breath.

She's tired but there's this happy glow in her chest that won't shut up.

She fucked Sable.

She ducks her head and just smiles to herself a little.

Then she starts getting her own clothes together again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable steps back out fully dressed a couple minutes later with the kind of last minute freshness only a Huntress can manage. She looks Lilian up and down with a big grin. "Hello, beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

She flushes but smiles. "Yeah, my turn now."

She ducks into the bathroom and gets herself cleaned up and dressed again, then steps out with her hairbrush, still brushing out her messed-up hair.

"You're going to need to teach me that Aura trick sometime," Lilian says.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Definitely. It's handy. First field mission at the latest, but probably sooner."

She offers Lilian her hand with a smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it and squeezes firmly.

"Us against the world, huh?" She smiles. "I think I could live with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep." She nods. "That's what our team is, at the heart of it: a promise to back each other against the world, to and past the point where it tries to burn down around us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, time to go face the music. There's no way I'm going to be able to keep the fact this all happened off my face, so... Might as well bull ahead and get through the teasing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It won't be too bad. Wanna meet everyone on the way out of the cafeteria, or just head straight to JSMN's dorm and wait there for movie time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait for movie time sounds better."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Sable will lead the way down the hall and tap her scroll against the door to open the suite. Inside, the four beds have been reassembled into two much larger beds, stacked atop each other like bunk beds. A screen projects in front of the wall opposite the beds, while a variety of soft and comfy furniture is scattered around the back wall. Large wardrobes and chests of drawers occupy the other parts of the wall near the screen. There are two desks, with chairs tucked in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw, cozy.

She settles on the lower bed.

"This is really cozy. I like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad! We usually sleep in a pile, but sometimes people need space. Thus the second bunk."

Sable sits down next to her, tail instinctively wrapping around her waist.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiiiiiiiiiles and leans against Sable.

Today is such a good day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable smiles and holds Lilian close.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's this cuddling that Jade walks into a few minutes later.

"Don't you look cozy," she teases with a grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep," she replies with a grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lillian smiles and nods and leans against Sable a little more.

"Sable is so good at dates."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles softly and nods. "She really is."

She leans in and kisses Sable softly, though she's careful not to accidentally brush against Lilian in the process.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable blushes, smiles, and returns the kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwwwwwwwwww.

Wow, that's a complicated emotion.

This girl who's so much to her has someone else too...

Permalink Mark Unread

She brushes her hair out from behind her ear.

"Can I get a kiss as well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable's response to that is to cup Lilian's cheek and kiss her tenderly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses back, then sighs as Sable parts from her.

"... Yeah." She looks over at Jade.

"I can see why you care about her."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles tenderly. "She's a big part of how the warehouse became home and not just a place we lived."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she looks back and forth between them, and smirks at Lilian. "She's great in bed, isn't she?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep."

She ducks her head and blushes and then realizes that's given Jade the answer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade cackles.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is so fucking doomed.

She just ducks her head and blushes a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable blushes, then fires back. "You'll have to do several friendship and date sidequests before you get to find out how good Jade is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade sputters and huffs and flushes for a moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwww, it's nice of Sable to defend her. Even if she did take some splash damage.

She smiles despite herself and leans in closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade grabs a beanbag chair and flops in it, her wings hanging off the back.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then she looks over at Lilian. "Have you tried stroking the base of her tail yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes, and shakes her head. "Noooooooooooot yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It. Functions rather like groping me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh. That's cute." Lilian smiles and draws a hand through Sable's hair and down her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a star falls from the sky and settles softly in her heart, where it stays.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's easy this time. Not difficult at all.

She guesses she's learning that about a lot of things today.

She queries the new power.

Permalink Mark Unread
The system quite happily responds.
Gerudo Crafting (The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild - SB) 200
You are a Gerudo Craftswoman, with all the skill that implies. You can make clothing for both voe and vai that can keep them cool and even help protect from lightning, fashion gorgeous swords and shields designed to be used by the greatest warriors, and Shock Arrows that encapsulate the fury of the storm itself, releasing a mighty shockwave on impact. Any item made by Gerudo hands can be shaped by yours, so long as you have gathered all needed ingredients.
Permalink Mark Unread

... What on earth is a "Gerudo"?

She kisses Sable's cheek instead of thinking about it more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable's eyes widen curiously at the new power landing, but smiles at the kiss and snuggles Lilian.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya comes back inside as well, smiling at everyone. "Hello, loves, and lovely new friend.~"

She bends over in front of a dresser, showing off a truly fabulous ass, to grab PJs and clean panties, then heads for the bathroom, idly doffing her clothes on the way. Her shorts and panties don't come off until she's already inside the bathroom, however, sailing into the hamper just as the door closes.

The shower is soon clearly audible.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well that's a nice view.

Permalink Mark Unread

... Sable has totally corrupted her hasn't she.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sable both blush and smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, she's like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When it's just the four of us, we all get like that a little sometimes, but I'm not sure Maya ever developed body-shyness at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

... Lillian ducks her head.

"It's being one heck of a day for me today."

She leans a little closer to Sable.

"Just... so many things."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable squeezes Lilian gently and strokes her hair. "Yeah, it really has been quite the day for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

And that's when Neo skips into the room, flops onto the bed, and sets her head in Sable's lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, Trouble," she says with a laugh as she pets Neo's hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo looks affronted at having her innocence impugned.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Neo." Lilian smiles softly. "Movie time soon, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods eagerly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian nods back and settles a little more into Sable.

It's good to be cared about.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head, then points at Lilian, then makes a heart with her hands, then mimes picking Sable's pocket, then points at the screen, then holds up two fingers, all with a questioning expression on her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes hearthands back and then gives a questioning expression in return.

Permalink Mark Unread

She quickly uses her Semblance to conjure a small, handheld sign:

Do you like heist movies too?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Less than Violet, but we all have a weakness for them," Lilian replies. "I'm just, mmm..."

She looks over at Sable, blushes.

"I seem to be a bit stuck in front for some reason."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smirks and nods and makes a lewd gesture.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian blushes and looks away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable squeezes Lilian and boops Neo's nose. "Yes, gremlin, you're right. Can you give her some time to get used to you, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She pouts and nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable rolls her eyes and ruffles Neo's hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lillian coughs. "So, uh, movie."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo points at the bathroom door, behind which the shower can still be heard.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, yeah." Lilian facepalms. "My bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo reaches up and hugs Lilian about the waist. No point in feeling bad about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable kisses Lilian's cheek.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gosh, is everyone in this group this... carefree?

She smiles and ducks her head. "I feel shy, but also... kind of comfy? It's a lot. But I feel safe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "Oh good. There's only so much we can do about all of this being A Lot, but making it cozy-safe is probably the most important thing. Means we're managing to share any of what we get out of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a feeling I'm going to like this place. Just a hunch."

Lilian smiles and nuzzles into Sable a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad."

She strokes Lilian's hair some more.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then Maya steps back out, wearing pyjama pants and a spaghetti-strap camisole. She eyes Neo's claim on Sable's lap, then leans down and kisses Sable, before sitting down next to Jade and starting to preen her wings.

"Good to see you, Lilian."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo grins and taps a few things on her scroll, and the big screen lights up in response. A library of movies scrolls down the display, and she picks out one called "Resemblance". The poster depicts two similar-looking actresses whose photos are cut down the middle with identically posed shots where they're made up to look like each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, looks interesting!

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh hey, Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nice going, Lils. Can't believe you beat me to the punch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, shut up.

There's no heat to it though. A good thing happened.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet grins and snuggles into Sable a bit more.

"Hey," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade relaxes into Maya's gentle touch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable grins and squeezes Violet. "Welcome back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know I couldn't miss this." She grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable grins and kisses Violet softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses back, soft and sweet.

She so wants to rummage through Lilian's memories a little, but it would just be spoilers. Better to stick with the present for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo reaches up and boops Violet on the nose.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and boops Neo's nose back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo snickers voicelessly, then taps her scroll to start the movie.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Violet settles in to watch.

Permalink Mark Unread

The movie opens with an establishing shot of a blonde woman in a business suit entering a bank, then slowly zooms out, pans around to face the other direction, and zooms into a hastily-rented office across the street where a similar-looking blonde can be seen watching the bank with a group of men and women.

"Gods, Sola," a man with rust-red hair says, "you really do look similar. This might just work."

The blonde — apparently Sola — nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Interesting setup. So it's an impersonation plot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sola starts explaining some basics of the planned heist and everyone's roles, complete with flashbacks of how she recruited each person. Meadow Parker, the team's acrobat, was Sola's friend and protégé, and helped her pick everyone out. Virica Sinter, the hacker, was recruited after getting away with hacking the Atlas military but getting caught for breaking and entering the next day, because she forgot to consider the physical angle. Ferric Carter, the safecracker, was found drunk and bored in a bar, because he didn't have any good target ideas. Venta Chantrelle, the getaway pilot, was poached from her job as a stunt pilot in movies. Ceramos Wallman, the hitter, was found in a fight club in Vacuo. Lastly, Sola Reverie herself is the team's fixer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet settles in a little more against Sable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable smiles softly and strokes Violet's hair as she watches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Virica will hack into the bank's HR systems to intercept the target's time off request and make it seem like it went through and got approved, but actually never let it be submitted at all. With that discrepancy established, Sola will show up at the bank the day the unbooked vacation is due to start, and take the target's place, acting as insider for the remainder of the job — a role which crucially depends on the similarity between Sola's and the target’s pocket dimension Semblances, as the target uses hers regularly at work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Vioet coos softly and smiles.

She likes this plot.

Permalink Mark Unread

The movie montages forward through training and preparation, hacking the time off system, and finishing off the makeup to make Sola look like the target, complete with duplicating her ID cards — revealing her name to be Citrine Moreaux. Sola walks into the bank on the day Citrine's vacation is due to start, and she's able to get into Citrine's office successfully. Days of quiet infiltration begin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo wiggles excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade sighs and leans against Maya, her wings all tended.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, this is starting to get interesting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Several days later, it's finally time for the heist. Virica and Ceramos walk into the bank, disguised as maintenance technicians with a cart of tools. They roll through a series of cubicles, occasionally bumping into desks, supplies bouncing off the cart once or twice. Eventually they reach an electronically locked safe, and Virica gets to work breaking it open. Once the safe opens, revealing crisp stacks of twenty-lien notes meant to fill ATMs, Virica and Ceramos start moving the money into a concealed section of the cart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nice little sideshow, but if this was what they were after what do they need the credentials for?

Permalink Mark Unread

They close up the concealed money compartment and start back toward the exit, only for a security guard to get suspicious and try to detain them. A fight ensues, and someone in the room pages “Ms. Moreaux”. Sola (as Citrine) arrives to address the situation, and pulls Virica, Ceramos, and the entire cart into her pocketspace, then outputs the cash onto a table. This is treated as evidence of guilt, and Sola says she'll take the two into custody.

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

They must have planned that? Right?

Okay, where is this going?

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the supplies that bounced onto a desk, next to a computer, expands and turns out to be a scroll, which interfaces with the computer and starts slowly breaking into an account transfer system.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone grins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, shiny.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, using the distraction of all this commotion, Meadow and Ferric walk blandly inside in the guise of bank employees. They make their way through various doors of increasing security using various ID cards prepared in advance by Virica, occasionally discarding one after use. Eventually they get past where employees normally go, to where the dangerous security measures start.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo has a distinctly "Aha!" expression on her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, dangerous security measures!

Permalink Mark Unread

Meadow shimmies through a vent, briefly using her Semblance to turn liquid to get past a grid of lasers blocking the way, and then emerges into the elevator shaft. Meadow opens the maintenance hatch in the roof of the elevator car and drops inside, then opens the elevator door and lets Ferric in. They ride the elevator up to the secure storage floor, and step out toward the safe deposit boxes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She really wishes she had popcorn to munch right now, this is getting good.

Now do they get out with it all?

Permalink Mark Unread

Cut to Sola, who has stepped away from the earlier confrontation and returned to Citrine's office. Sola activates a security application, and it demands a key. Flashback to discussion of the key: its operation depends on the gradual decay of unstable materials, and if kept out of pocketspace will decay into uselessness in a matter of hours. The key is replaced every two weeks, and the last replacement was a week before the heist, three days after Citrine's vacation started. Sola pretended to be Citrine to receive the new key, and has kept it in her pocketspace since. Cut back to present, Sola materializes the key and uses it to unlock the security application, then deploys the correct block of deposit boxes for Meadow and Ferric.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, so that's why the impersonation was necessary.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cut back to Meadow and Ferric. Another trio of security guards show up, interrupting the two thieves on their way to the boxes. Meadow pulls Ferric into a side office to wait for the guards to pass, but they stay on that hall and can't be avoided.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no! How will they get out of this one?

Permalink Mark Unread

She strokes Violet's hair, and Neo's.

Permalink Mark Unread

C'mon, you can do it...

Permalink Mark Unread

Somehow Sola is suddenly on that hall and greets the guards, showing her ID and security key before ordering them to accompany her on an inspection of another secure area on that floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait, what?

Nice going Sola she guesses?

Permalink Mark Unread

The other two thieves sigh in relief and resume their course to the boxes. Meadow pulls the correct box out of the block of boxes, and sets it on a table in front of Ferric. Ferric opens the first stage of the box using a digital key provided by Virica, then carefully cracks the mechanical lock. They extract a folder of paper documents and a storage drive from the box, close it up, and put it away. After storing the documents, both paper and digital, in a briefcase, the two exit in a orderly fashion and meet up with Venta, who flies them out in a bullhead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Paper documents and a storage drive? Huh, that's interesting.

And a nice safe flight out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cut to a hotel suite across town, where everyone is meeting up in the aftermath. The team reviews what they got away with. Ceramos complains about losing the cash. Virica brags that the scroll she dropped on that desk stole a bunch of money from the FDC (Freeze Dust Company, which only coincidentally resembles the SDC) while they were in Sola's “custody”. Meadow and Ferric show off the haul from the safe deposit box. Sola applauds, saying that this'll be what they need to prove the FDC's corruption. Everyone congratulates each other on a job well done, toasts with their choice of drinks.

And then Meadow asks Sola how she got her and Ferric out of that jam when she had to be across the bank deploying the block of boxes at the same time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oooooooooooooooooh this is going to be good.

She leans forwards on her seat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sola walks over to the balcony, asks Meadow if she can borrow her lighter. Meadow tosses the engraved metal lighter across the room to Sola, who lights a cigarette and leans back against the railing, then vanishes the lighter into pocketspace. Meadow objects briefly, but then — the door to the suite opens, and in walks Citrine. Everyone freaks out and starts shouting all at once.

"What the fuck is Moreaux doing here?”

"Isn't that the gods-damned target just walked into our suite?"

  "Who invited this bitch?"

Until Citrine tosses Meadow's lighter back to her.

In the stunned silence, Sola says, “everyone meet Citrine Reverie, my sister”

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet cracks up.

That's great.

Permalink Mark Unread

From the stunned silence, cut to a flashback of Citrine's side of this whole thing. There's a shot of Citrine interviewing for a job at the bank, Citrine getting promoted to head of security on the back of several improvements she made to the security systems, Citrine using her access to the transactions to prove the FDC paid various criminals, Citrine pulling pictures of FDC execs meeting with organized crime leadership from security cameras, printing them out, and putting them in a folder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, the long con! But why did she then store this folder in a safe deposit box in a vault she'd have to break into, or was that just for fun?

Permalink Mark Unread

Citrine confronts the head of the FDC, who secretly brought armed guards to the meeting and threatens to shoot her if she doesn't turn over the documents.

She's not remotely pleased about this, but does so.

We next see the head of the FDC depositing the documents, both folder and storage drive, in the safe deposit box.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oho! Okay, that makes sense.

Permalink Mark Unread

Finally, we see a shot of Citrine getting back in touch with her sister, Sola, and bitching about the whole situation at a bar. Sola considers for a moment, then says, "I have an idea."

Cut back to present.

Citrine sits down heavily on a couch, grabs a beer, opens it, and takes a big drink of it.

"Holy shit," Virica says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Two weeks later, we see the head of the FDC watching the news in his office. A special report comes on, discussing shocking revelations that the FDC has been working closely with organized crime and using violent thugs to break strikes, on top of cutting safety measures at all their mines.

He stares at the display in shock.

"What!? How!?"

The shot zooms out on the FDC head's increasing panic, until it fades through a screen to reveal the team of thieves watching him via a hidden camera. Citrine has an extremely smug and self-satisfied expression on her face.

And the credits roll.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hope whoever made this movie made bank off it and donated most of the proceeds."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo nods and grins in clear agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was fun."

She leans down and kisses Neo sweetly, then over to kiss Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya starts to look it up on her scroll.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I recognized the name of one of the consultants in the credits. I'm willing to bet they did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Found it. All the actors volunteered for pay cuts for the film, and all proceeds beyond what was necessary to pay those reduced salaries along with the crew were donated to the Mine Workers of Mantle fund — a total of thirty-seven million lien."

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses back, then smiles and ducks her head. "That was really nice. The twist was solid and it wasn't afraid to make a point. You girls have good taste in movies."

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo beams at Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Glad to hear it, beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for having me, everyone."

Violet leans against Sable softly.

"... Lilian says thanks for having her too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable squeezes Violet tightly and smiles warmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for joining us, dears. Do you have any plans for tomorrow, yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, not yet. It's been such a day. Did you have something you wanted to propose?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "Jade will be busy part of the day, having tea in town with Blake. I'm sure Sable and Ruby are eager to start on your weapon design, so that argues in favor of any more weapon testing you need to figure out what sort of firearm to build in."

And then she stretches luxuriously, arching her back. "But most of why I asked is I'd love to spend some time getting to know you better. I do not have a specific plan in mind yet, but I expect we can find one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," Violet says. "We can definitely do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lovely. We'll see about more specific plans tomorrow, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Jade looks pretty relaxed, like a subtle tension she always carries has been soothed away by Maya's preening. "What d'you wanna do now?"

She leans back against the taller girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, hm. There's this whole situation with us where we... seem to be gaining powers... and we just got a new one that lets us build things? So maybe we could try that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya's eyes widen curiously. "Oh, interesting. What sort of things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo grins mischievously and mimes opening a door.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're right, this isn't remotely the latest one of us has gone to use one of the workshops."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable smiles curiously and kisses Violet's temple.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The power comes with a kind of... instruction manual? But I have no idea what it's trying to tell me. Let me just look at it again."

She nudges her extra sense again.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the system replies.

Gerudo Crafting (The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild - SB) 200 You are a Gerudo Craftswoman, with all the skill that implies.

"So it says I'm a "Gerudo craftswoman" and that "any item made by Gerudo hands can be shaped by mine", but I haven't the slightest clue what a Gerudo is. Apparently I can make... Clothing that keeps people cool and protects from lightning, gorgeous swords and shields, and "shock arrows that encapsulate the fury of the storm itself." But it doesn't provide ingredients or anything."

She taps her lip. "It's tempting to try and make something for December and me to use, something in the "saber and buckler" category..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head. "Huh. That sounds very cool, but I don't know how well we can integrate mechashift into whatever you'd make. Worth some testing at the very least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, definitely." Violet smiles. "And I would love to see the workshop if you all spend time there regularly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya nods. "It's one of Sable and Ruby's favorite places, but all of us spend time there periodically. We all maintain our own weapons and must know them inside and out, and we collaborate on any upgrades as much as possible, even if we do not specialize as much in engineering."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh that's a thought. If Ruby finds out she missed this, the pouting will be legendary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, go ahead and invite her. She's cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable taps away at her scroll for a moment, then puts it away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo snickers and sits up out of Sable's lap, and holds up three fingers. Then she drops to two. Then one.

Permalink Mark Unread

A blur of rose petals bursts through the door, crashes into Sable, and materializes into Ruby. She's wearing PJs: a cute camisole with a cat cartoon face on the chest (not nearly as low-cut as Maya's) and drawstring pants with roses.

"Hi I can't wait to see this cool new crafting ability hi everyone hi unspecified Morning-Glory this is so cool!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's Violet. And wonderful, let's go down to the workshops together and see how we get on." She smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable giggles warmly and tosses Ruby over her shoulder as she stands up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi Viole—whoa! Saaaaaaable!"

She flails.

Permalink Mark Unread

Adorably, in the opinion of the person who inspired that flailing.

Sable reaches out with her free hand and takes Violet's hand, squeezing fondly.

Permalink Mark Unread

And everyone else gets up and stretches a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet gets up and stretches too, then looks over at Sable with Ruby over her shoulder and grins.

"That's a good look on you two," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby splutters and blushes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite," Maya agrees with a slight smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable giggles, nods, and steps out into the hall, leading the way to the workshop area.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet trails along, holding Sable's hand softly.

It feels good to have friends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby keeps spluttering, whining, and beating against Sable's back for a decent distance, but much quieter once they're in public. Eventually she gives up and turns to Violet. "So what's this ability and how's it work and what can I do to help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's supposed to let me make like swords and shields and stuff. I'm not sure how to work on the stuff but swords and shields seem doable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh that's really cool! I wonder how it handles mechashift?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have absolutely no idea. We'll have to try it and find out."

Permalink Mark Unread

She wiggles excitedly. A rose petal or two waft off her.

Permalink Mark Unread

The workshops are in the same building as the various training rooms, and are conveniently very close to where the rocket lockers are stored. Sable tags into a workshop, which turns out to be spacious, with lots of stools and a variety of machining tools, as well as a forge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya peels off to grab everyone's weapons, in case anyone wants to do maintenance while this is happening. The locks on the lockers really won't even slow her down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet comes in and looks at the forge.

"... I know how to use that," she says, mostly to herself. "At least, the basics. I should absolutely not know how that works at all, but I have this... instinct..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby dissolves into rose petals and reappears in front of Violet. "That's really really cool! Mysterious instinctual skill upgrades! What sort of starter project do you wanna try? A sword? A knife? A shield? I don't think we wanna try making your actual weapons, though, because those'll need mechashift."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think a sword sounds like a good start." Violet smiles and steps over to the forge.

"I'll need materials. Iron, and my instincts say... I should have gemstones. Like, ruby, sapphire, diamond. Something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby shakes her head. "We don't have mundane gems in here, but there's definitely Dust. Would that work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could try Dust, it's just so volatile I'd be scared about handling it safely while working with it. Maybe it's best to start with something without it before we try something with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, grabs a few bars of iron and various steels, and sets them down in front of Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

... Right.

Making a sword out of a block of raw iron is sure a thing.

Skill, any help...?

Permalink Mark Unread

Heat the iron, then strike with your hammer like so...

The image of a simple curved blade takes shape in her mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Interesting

She sets to work. The tools feel familiar in her hands, easy to hold, easy to guide.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone is quietly maintaining their own weapons while December works.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby and Sable glance over a bit more often than others, watching excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes time and concentration, but gradually the blade starts to form under her hands. It has no tang or grip - that will come later - but the curved blade will hold an edge well enough.

It's calming, working like this. There's a rhythm to the hammerstrokes. It feels...

It feels a little like coming home.

Permalink Mark Unread

... This is going to take more than one day.

"I could finish this," December says. "And arguably I should, just to confirm that the power works as advertised. But I'm not sure it'd be the best use of my time."

Permalink Mark Unread

She stretches and nods. "Probably best to save it until class, or until we're working on the actual weapon."

She closes up the mechanism she's currently working on.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What should I do with this piece, should I bring it with me back to my dorm room or what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby points out a set of shelves for unfinished projects. "It was so cool watching you work on that. Like you couldn't even tell that you didn't know how to do that yesterday!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't really take credit for it, but yeah, it's cool."

December folds her hands together and smiles. "... Alright, I guess it's time I got back to my room and turned in for the night. Today felt like it lasted like a month."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable nods. Everyone is more or less packed back up, so they start trooping back to the dorms together.

"You're really diving in well. Proud of you three."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You had more than a little to do with that, you big softie."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and blushes a bit. "I try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She really is a softie. Can't stay angry at nearly anyone, always tries to help people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're rather fond of that about her."

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

"Awwww, she doesn't even try to deny it. Cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable continues to be flustered and blushy.

"Attacked on all sides, I swear."

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet darts in and kisses Sable's cheek.

"Because you deserve it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable sighs and smiles and hugs Violet and Maya close as they walk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think you'll be up for trying some different weapons tomorrow? See what sort of caliber and profile you feel like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, definitely. It was intense this morning, I really have to thank you for it. It kind of, um." She looks over at Sable. "Precipitated things between me and Sable, so I really appreciate you taking the time to show me something so real."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby blushes at the mention of Things, but nods. "Yeah! It's really intense! I dunno what you mean about 'real' though, melee and ranged are both really important for fighting Grimm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess, yeah. I just like ranged better."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods and smiles. "I really like it too! And it's totally valid to have a preference! Just sometimes they've got a hide thick enough that you need to cut through it manually, get in close enough to get the weakspots, and directly put your Aura behind your strikes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see..." Lilian nods. "That makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There are special techniques you can use to enhance projectiles with Aura, though, and if you know in advance you're going to be facing really big Grimm then you can pack the really big guns too. So us ranged girls aren't left out in the cold there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess I'll have to learn," Lillian replies. "There's a lot to go through."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby nods. "Always more to learn, always room to improve your weapons. I've got lots to learn still too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. There's a lot to do still."

Lilian smiles and stretches, and goes over to the door of her dorm room.

"See you all tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone variously choruses "see you tomorrow," and Sable gives Lilian a goodnight kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

She blushes, and retreats back into her room, shutting the door behind her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet pilots the body over onto the bed and sits down a little heavily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow, what a day.

Permalink Mark Unread

You can say that again. Our very own Lilian taking the bull by the horns.

Permalink Mark Unread

And certain other body parts.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's just no escape for me, is there? Even in my own head I must be teased?

Permalink Mark Unread

Honestly, Lils... I'm just blown away. I had thought I'd be the first of us. And then you go and make it look easy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian runs a hand through her hair and sighs, her fingers interweaving in her lap.

It was really stressful right up until it wasn't. Sable read me like a book, and... I'm really grateful she did.

Permalink Mark Unread

We're not virgins anymore, are we?

Permalink Mark Unread

I mean, I'm definitely not. You two... Up to you. You've got memories of sex now if you want them. It's not like I can keep you from prying.

Permalink Mark Unread

I'm not going to be satisfied until I'm satisfied, if you get what I mean. But... You've done almost all the hard work for me.

Heh, hard work.

We'll just do our best together. And hopefully that'll be enough.

... Really proud of you, Lils. Really really proud of you.

Permalink Mark Unread

I don't think I consider my virginity taken either. It's more fun to have more special times to distribute. I wonder if Maya would be up for it? She certainly has... a bit of an attitude.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a nice ass.

Permalink Mark Unread

I'm not even surprised at this point, Violet.

Permalink Mark Unread

I mean, I am kinda you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah

Let's get to sleep, there'll be more to do tomorrow.

Lilian takes off her clothes again, a blush coming to her cheeks as a flash of Sable's smile comes back to her memory.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone's got a cruuuuuush.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shut up. She's my first, of course I like her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just so long as you know.

Violet lays the body out and pulls the covers over.

Night, girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they drift off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time passes, as is its wont. Soon enough, the morning comes.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's always a little blurry in the mornings before anyone's really settled into front. They sit up, rub their face, press their hands over their eyes.

It's a new day, huh?

She feels kind of tired for some reason...

Permalink Mark Unread

Must have been all that physical activity, huh?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, shush.

Permalink Mark Unread

They shrug on their clothes (black t-shirt and matching slacks this time) and take a long breath.

Is there a clock in the room?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a clock in their scroll, along with a clock that came with the room, little projected display from a bedside table. Both say it's 06:53.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like old habits die hard, even if they did forget to set an alarm.

They'll probably be serving breakfast soon.

She stretches and goes into the bathroom to brush her hair out and brush her teeth.

Permalink Mark Unread

We've got a whole day to ourselves again. Then classes start tomorrow... we should talk with Sable some more, get ourselves ready as best we can.

And, um...

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, so now you're getting shy, huh?

It'll be okay. We'll sort it out. Just do your best, okay?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, I guess.

Violet sets down the hairbrush and takes a long breath.

She sighs it out again, then walks over to her dorm room door and lets herself out. Anyone in the hall?

Permalink Mark Unread

Violet can just see Sable, tail swishing, as she turns the corner. She can also hear what might be Maya's voice wondering about breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh!

She hurries to catch up with Sable.

"Hey, hey, good morning!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Well what if Sable whips 'round, scoops Violet into her arms, and twirls her? "G'morning, beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello there!"

Permalink Mark Unread

And Neo waves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning!" Violet blushes and leans in to kiss Sable and smilllles at her.

"Got a lot of stuff to do today. I've got to get ready for classes and I want to spend time with you and all your girlfriends. Maybe some time in the workshop too, I'm not sure. Just, like, a lot to do." She smiles and pries herself off of Sable and looks over at Maya and Neo. "Hey Maya, hey Neo. It's cool to see you two too! Resemblance was great, Neo, want to watch another like that tonight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Neo nods and grins, then shadow-boxes for a moment and tilts her head questioningly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A kung fu movie? Sparring? Both would be cool."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bounces excitedly and holds up one finger.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, a kung fu movie would be great. Know any good ones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maya chuckles. "She wants to surprise you, or she wants to show you her selection later. Or both. At this point she's not likely to say more."

They're getting closer to the cafeteria.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't mind a surprise."

Lilian looks over at Sable. "... so what do they serve for breakfast around here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eggs, bacon, waffles, cereal, sausage, sometimes Valean toast, lots of fruit, plenty of toast in general, and more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've literally died and gone to heaven."

She pauses. "Or at least combat school."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins and nods. "We do have good food here. Good food makes for happy Huntresses, and happy Huntresses fight better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this one of those scientifically proven facts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sable tilts her head and looks at Maya.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know of any studies, but it may simply be under the general principle all of Vale and Beacon operates with about investing in mood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that makes sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

And soon enough they enter the cafeteria. Most of RWBY and JNPR can be seen in the usual spot, Nora with an enormous plate of pancakes, but Jade and Blake are absent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lilian goes and grabs some waffles and sausages for her breakfast, along with a big mug of apple juice, then comes to sit with JSMN.

Permalink Mark Unread

The reduced teams JSMN and RWBY are sitting closer together with two members missing between them. Sable sits down on the window side. With a plate of sausage and eggs, and a couple waffles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ruby is next to her, and gives her a friendly shoulder bump. "Hi girls!"

She's eating a bowl of cereal and has several waffles as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning," Weiss says simply.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyone got plans for today?", asks Yang after swallowing a bite.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good morning, girls," says December. "I was thinking maybe some sparring? I'm still a clueless newbie at this whole combat school thing, but I've got to catch up somehow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only thing I'm any good at teaching is unarmed, but I'd love to spar. Maybe best to focus on your own weapon for now, though. What're you leaning toward?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Saber and buckler, with some form of ranged backup we haven't figured out yet. We'll get there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Solid pick. Be fun to spar once you're more used to it. And you'll figure out your ranged option. Rubes took ages before she settled on making Crescent Rose a sniper-scythe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll do our best."

Lilian starts to work on her food.

"Any plans from the rest of you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She scratches her head sheepishly. "I've got an assignment for Port due tomorrow, so I'm gonna be working on that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will be on an extra orienteering assignment, because apparently my team leader believes I need more practical experience," Weiss replies primly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eheh," Ruby giggles nervously, before firing back. "I just don't want anything to happen to you 'cause you're not used to the wilderness, Weiss! It's not my fault the tutors your dad picked didn't teach you anything about the outdoors."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly," Maya adds with a minute frown, "I wouldn't put it past Jacques to arrange that deliberately."

Permalink Mark Unread

She huffs. "He would, wouldn't he? Likely hopes I'll get overwhelmed and come running home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly I could probably use orienteering experience too. I've never been outside of Vale before."

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

"We probably shouldn't start you on the same assignment I've got Weiss doing. It's a bit on the more complicated side and we should wait until you're used to keeping your Aura up for longer periods first. Also I planned the assignment for Weiss not having distractions so probably wait for the next one. Maybe a weekday afternoon or next weekend?"

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, that makes sense. Sorry, I didn't really mean to invite myself along..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh is she gonna feel guilty for that no that's no good! "No no it'd be fine normally this is just a specific assignment!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Weiss gives Lilian a small smile. "Honestly I would appreciate the company. Ruby is correct, however."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." Lillian offers a little smile and nods. "I'll do my best to catch up."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yang laughs. "Ice Princess here would love any distraction from orienteering practice. We'll get you caught up, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maya," Pyrrha calls from across the aisle, "would you mind helping me work on Jaune's ability to face two opponents at once, this afternoon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would love to, but I promised our dear Morning-Glories a date." She turns to Lilian. "Would you mind our as-yet-unplanned activities happening in the morning, so I can assist with training in the afternoon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, not at all." Lilian smiles at Maya.

Permalink Mark Unread

Activities, huh?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, yes, very original.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lovely." She turns back to Pyrrha. "Meet up after lunch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm doomed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pyrrha laughs and nods, and pats Jaune's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess we'll fit more firearm testing into the afternoon, then. Any idea what you two will do this morning? I have an essay for Oobleck due later this week and could spend a bit of time on it, so that'll probably be my morning."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure. I guess some getting-to-know-you stuff. What would you be intereated in, Maya?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Board games? Go for a walk? Video games?" She shrugs and smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd love to play some board games with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she'll reach across the table and squeeze December's hand then. "It's a date."

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes back and smiles.

"Alright," she says. "Any favorites you'd like to play?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm. I quite enjoy Codenames, and there's a cooperative two-player version of it. Go is a classic, as is chess, but I'm out of practice with both. Great War is a favorite of mine, but it tends to run long. We have copies of Star Realms and Carcasonne, but haven't had a chance to try either yet. Do you have any favorites?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A cooperative game sounds fun. Let's try Codenames."

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes December's hand once more, smiles, and nods. "We'll head back to the room and try it after breakfast then?"

She finishes up more of her food.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds cool to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

And shortly people start finishing up their meals and heading off in ones and twos and threes. Maya stands and stretches.

"Shall we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, let's."

December gets up as well, her meal having vanished mysteriously partway through the conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they make their way back to the room. It looks much as it did last night. Maya steps over to the shelf and pulls out a box labeled "Codenames".

Permalink Mark Unread

"So how does this work?"
