elliebrimbor has excellent taste in girlfriends thank you very much (sauron doesn't count)
Permalink Mark Unread

It's been a long while since Aredhel spoke to any of her kin. Murdering your '''husband''' apparently makes family dinners awkward, and she hasn't had too many people who won't ask questions or side eye her about that since the Feanorians' final collapse. She prefers traveling, anyways, with Men or honestly Dwarves - Dwarves have a very finely honed understanding of sarcasm.

But she's heard rumors on the grapevine, of a rather dramatic scene at Ost-in-Edhil, where her cousin Celebrimbor apparently cast out a certain guest in a storm of fury. She's heard a variety of rumors about that guest, and, well. Aredhel has good hunches, and she's got a sense for what's going on. And she knows just what's needed after a bad breakup.

Namely: a large pack of very good wine; provisions and maps for a long trip; a new brace of arrows; and an extremely nice sword Aredhel stole from Maedhros before she could jump off a cliff with it (she usually wields the extremely nice sword that Turgon had forged for her, or preferentially the extremely nice bow the Feanorians gifted to her when she drifted into their crowd; Maedhros's old sword is an extra for special occasions).

Taking revenge on a lying, traitorous girlfriend who was possibly secretly a Maia is probably slightly different logistics than for a lying, traitorous husband who was definitely an elf (until Aredhel got to him, at which point he was a pincushion), but Aredhel is pretty sure they can improvise if needed.

She strolls right past the guards the city has hastily posted - they're overworked, and Aredhel could teach these whelps a few things about stealth - and right up to the headquarters of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, then terrifies the first elf she meets (cowards) into telling her where Celebrimbor is.

Aredhel isn't stupid, and has timed her approach for when her hunch says her cousin is unlikely to be busy, but she still does knock before letting herself in. Once.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the thrown glass shatters against the far wall, rather than the door.

"...Aredhel."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Celebrimbor," she says, stepping in.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To what do I owe this visit, cousin? I am not, as you see, in a welcoming mood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Heard you acquired yourself a shitty ex. I brought wine and a sword."

Permalink Mark Unread

Huff.

"Two possible solutions, hm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One. Wine is a great way to start a revenge road trip, so long as you're back to sober when you catch up to the bastard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do have experience in this regard, I will grant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't get the full story, but it sounds like she deserves some stabbing. Even if you're not quite in the mood to kill her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The only vacillation is how much stabbing she deserves before I do kill her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can see how the mood strikes you. But I killed Eol quickly, and regretted that later; you can only kill her once."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sage advice, I'm sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm known for my wisdom."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More for your archery, in fact."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Another thing that'll be useful in a quest like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The prospect sounds more enticing by the moment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You still have reservations?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never been much of one for quests."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll be with an expert. I've already packed provisions and prepared maps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are not giving me a choice, are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm not ditching you here to mope."

Permalink Mark Unread

Siiiigh.

"I suppose it's not as though I've any projects left going."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the spirit!" She can help Celebrimbor pack.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not that she has much. A laboratory is hardly portable.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's clothes for the road to consider... But Celebrimbor's current wardrobe is unlikely to be suitable. Aredhel knows her size, though, and had brought some - plain, hardly up to the standards of a Lord of the Elves, but durable and reliable. Good hunting clothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

That will be a change.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps a good one. A break, if nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

A break.

It has been... some time since she's taken such a thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then now's the time.

Permalink Mark Unread

So be it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel is, of course, ready to leave as soon as Celebrimbor is - though she doesn't know if clues to their target's heading may have been left here.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's already consigned the treacherous bitch's effects to the fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair.

They'll use their senses and their wits, then - and Celebrimbor's own knowledge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Such as it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel could use an overview, nonetheless. She's received only... Fragmented information.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want an enumeration of mistakes ordered alphabetically or chronologically?

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I can listen, if that's something you want or need to talk about, but - for hunting the bitch down, all I need is the practical things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Practically speaking, then. She talked often of her time in the east and of the peoples of the south."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then that's where we'll start."

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor can give some more specific places and names.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll compare them to her maps, making a few small markings as notes.

Permalink Mark Unread

The first stages of the quest, one assumes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most important parts of hunting are knowing your target and knowing your land.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're ready to head out soon enough, though - up to Celebrimbor if she wants to leave immediately or wait for dawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sees no need to linger, now that a course has been decided.

Permalink Mark Unread

Off with them, then - it's fastest to cut through Khazad-dum, then follow the river from Mirrormere to Nen Hithoel and perhaps beyond. It'd be perhaps three weeks from Ost-in-Edhil to Nen Hithoel - whereas if they take the southern roads, they're far less likely to run into certain relatives in Lothlorien, but they'd easily be two months or more on the road to reach the same region.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor has little desire to weather the scolding of Lothlorien.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can take the long way, if Celebrimbor prefers.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not as though she will have anyone of import waiting on her return.

Permalink Mark Unread

Downstream to the ford at Tharbad, then; the road south from that town is large and in good repair at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

The first steps of a journey longer than she's taken since the founding of Ost-in-Edhil.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's going to get longer yet; the known world past the Misty Mountains is enormous, and the parts unknown to their people are, as far as Aredhel can tell, larger yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

How... intriguing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been exploring, trying to map it, but... That's not something I'm well suited to."

"Perhaps after we deal with Sauron," because Aredhel's confirmed the identity of her cousin's ex by now, "You can go learn what is to be known of those lands."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I assume by such point I will have picked up the requisite skills."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be disappointed if you haven't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Strong motivation, to not disappoint my favorite cousin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm your favorite?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least of the ones I have left."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll take it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets an actual laugh out of her (or at least an energetic snort, or something in between).

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it you find so amusing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe just life."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh really?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Better to laugh than sob, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've never been one for tears."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, that's never been your story."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've learned to laugh only recently, in truth. Though I've always known how to bare my teeth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A capacity not to be overlooked in utility."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It helps, most of the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would that I had employed it sooner myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It isn't too late to start."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I suppose not. Perhaps you can educate me in the trick of that as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Baring your teeth one moment, laughing the next?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the effective presentation in both forms."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll work with you on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My thanks, cousin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be my pleasure, I'm sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For as long as you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am at your disposal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we'll see how the years turn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shall."

And down the road?

Permalink Mark Unread

Down the road - the river passes swiftly under them, and Celebrimbor can acquire good horses easily enough with her status and coin. Aredhel uses that same coin to purchase a few more things for the road; Tharbad is going to be one of the largest towns they'll see for a while yet. The lands to the south and then east of the Misty Mountains are lightly inhabited, by a mixture of suspicious homesteaders and more suspicious tribes. They know Aredhel, though, or she at least knows them and their many fractured tongues, so threats in the early journey are minor, mostly from small bands of attempted robbers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor's not inclined to let any of those try twice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel will generally give them just enough time to make their intentions clear before putting her arrows in their throats.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's a very good archer in general.

Permalink Mark Unread

Swift and decisive.

Permalink Mark Unread

An important trait when hunting.

Permalink Mark Unread

And in other endeavors, Celebrimbor has found.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel does succeed at most things she tries, lately.

Permalink Mark Unread

A noble trait.

Permalink Mark Unread

One that's sadly uncommon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas, though that makes it all the more precious where found.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor has many of those same traits, she's noticing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps it runs in the family.

Permalink Mark Unread

She would not accuse most of their relatives of being successful. Perhaps Celebrimbor and Aredhel are merely unique.

Permalink Mark Unread

That does sound more likely, come to think...

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.

And - onwards with their day? (They have a lot of ground to cover.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ever onwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their journey that day is long, but the road's easy and uncrowded and contains no one stupid enough to accost two armed elves, so they make good time and aren't bothered. They're able to set up a nice camp, too, one that's sheltered from the wind and secluded from the road without being too inconvenient. There's a small and clear stream in walking distance that they can use to wash their things, even.

Permalink Mark Unread

Practically ideal.

Permalink Mark Unread

A lucky find.

And with it so ideal, that makes it a good time to ask as they're setting up camp - "Want to hook up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Hm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "You're attractive. I've seen how you look at me. But I'm not one for - all that mushy stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. Yes, I suppose I would like to hook up. Mush does not seem appealing to me at the moment either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here's a good place to start."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that why you picked this campsite?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why I picked today." Aredhel also isn't the kind to let anything other than 'this is a good campsite' decide her camping locations. And, with a quick smile: "Instead of a spot with wide open sight lines on a rainy night."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

Doesn't take much more work to get the essentials set up...

Permalink Mark Unread

Leaves plenty of time and effort for... relaxation.

Permalink Mark Unread

A bit of light exercise, even.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor finds it rather invigorating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gets the kinks out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite.

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Very relaxing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor's mood for the next few days is notably improved.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Aredhel can find them a suitable campsite most days.

Permalink Mark Unread

A useful talent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel's a useful kind of person.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good thing she's on Celebrimbor's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

She likes being appreciated.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who doesn't?

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel doesn't like praise from most people. It's usually vapid.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most people are idiots, true.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not Celebrimbor, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not when she can help it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which has seemed often, to Aredhel.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

It must be.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll need to put that intelligence to use soon enough - the road only goes down to the pass between the tail of the Misty Mountains and the crown of the White Mountains. Beyond that the land is rolling plains without a path in site - and with exceptionally few settlements, almost all of Men. Hunting gets scarcer, wild animals smaller, and there's far worse forage available. Aredhel will teach Celebrimbor all she can of pathfinding, of snare setting, of locating water... And of the languages and trade norms of the scattered tiny homesteads and of the shepherds that control much of the grassland. The shepherds especially are inclined to be aggressive with strangers.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a change from city life. She's not sure she entirely approves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel prefers it.

Permalink Mark Unread

To each their own, of course. But Celebrimbor appreciates the freedom to specialize that more concentrated population brings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they can stick to occasionally visiting each other once this is over.

Permalink Mark Unread

That might well be for the best.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Aredhel hasn't much had people to go visit, before. At least not since the First Age.

Permalink Mark Unread

Change does come, eventually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Even to elves.

Permalink Mark Unread

So it seems.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they're about to bring a lot more change.

Permalink Mark Unread

The family is noted for that, if nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the only family traditions she can really get behind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps they should create new ones. As some of the last left on the continent in a position to do so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds like a good plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

An annual hunting trip, perhaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

A tradition she can get behind. Though an annual hunting trip for shitty exes sounds like it'd get to be a bit much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not least for what implies about the state of Celebrimbor's future prospects.

Permalink Mark Unread

No more shitty exes sounds preferable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps bears, then. Or unruly shepherds.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll figure something out. Something fun and satisfying in and of itself might be a good goal...

Permalink Mark Unread

Might be they'll find something while on this quest. A breadcrumb trail to the future.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll have to keep an eye open for opportunities.

Permalink Mark Unread

Stay alert, as ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something Aredhel is good at.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Slight preen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, a hit.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to keep working for more, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Half the pleasure is the chase, Celebrimbor has always found.

Permalink Mark Unread

A proper hunter's attitude.

Permalink Mark Unread

She learns quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the things Aredhel likes about her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor seems to like compliments...

Permalink Mark Unread

A vice she will admit to freely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want more?

Permalink Mark Unread

If that would not be too deep a descent into mush.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll think on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

For now - they can work on another lesson in wild craft.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor will be an attentive student.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Doesn't seem like their nominal quest will be providing many distractions for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're pushing hard during the day, and fishing for rumors when they encounter people - but cross country hunts like this are pretty often boring at this stage.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll have to make their own entertainment.

Permalink Mark Unread

Somehow.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's pretty sure they can figure it out.

Permalink Mark Unread

The scenery is pleasant, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel does like the great outdoors.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, that too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Flatterer.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has a jeweler's eye for quality, you know.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel's coming to appreciate that.

Permalink Mark Unread

As well she should. Celebrimbor took pains to develop it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She did a good job.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quality is worth the effort.

Permalink Mark Unread

It shows.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

With their distractions settled on, the trip goes a little faster. The great plains turn into woods again as they approach the river that cuts between the major mountain ranges out here - reaching the area Celebrimbor has heard Annatar speak of would involve traveling down that river, and either taking an extremely long hike over land or finding a boat to take them to the ports of Near Harad.

But... They start hearing rumors as they approach the pass through the mountains, of a new darkness in the east. An ill wind blows, some say.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do they say from which direction in any more detail?

Permalink Mark Unread

They're able to get some teenagers - who look wan and shaken and who jump at shadows - who apparently went into the mountains that rise sharply to the east - the range is large and doesn't look entirely natural, with the tell-tale marks of a range created during the wars between the Valar and Melkor. The teenagers say they saw monsters, ones that didn't used to be there. Strange, dark monsters like a nightmare given flesh.

Permalink Mark Unread

...That does sound like her work.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Yeah. It's familiar.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's the best lead they've found so far.

Permalink Mark Unread

Off towards the mountains, then? (Which the locals call the Black Mountains, contrasting the White Mountains to the west.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They shall see what terrors await.

Permalink Mark Unread

The terrors start with thin, unreal air. The sun looks distant, the sky washed out and grey. A fell mist clings to the slopes, and as they ascend they notice the many small streams are either heavy with soot or clear but bitter-tasting. Plants are withering, drying out despite the damp fog, and the leaves of trees deeper in the pass they're directed towards are white as bone.

They don't see any monsters, not yet. But neither do they see nor hear birds - except some ravens who follow them a short distance and begin to caw harshly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The land is as blighted as her spirit."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I'm not fully fluent in their tongue, but those ravens are calling warnings. We likely won't find any food or potable water soon..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you think we should turn back to restock?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have some supplies, but - it's up to you. I don't know how long we'll be searching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm of a mind to press on. See how far we get."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "We can go a while without eating or drinking if we need to, anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though I'd rather it not come to that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can move quickly to scout."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then let us begin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards then - though they'll have to sacrifice the potential for stealth if they want speed...

Permalink Mark Unread

So be it.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're able to make good time. The ravens abandon them quickly, apparently giving them up as a lost cause. The lack of vegetation makes it easier to move quickly, and the ground is hard, making for sure footing. Daylight, it seems, is still relatively safe.

Which means they crest a rise and are looking out on a dark, forbiding plain before long. The sky is thick with smoke, pouring from an enormous volcano barely visible on the horizon. There's a single artificial structure on the entire plain as far as either elf can tell - a black tower that soars above the plains, a fire to match the volcano at its crown.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That will be her lair," Celebrimbor says. "And she'll have harnessed the volcano for power, like as not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where do you think we should look first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither will be easy to get into. The volcano, perhaps, if she's made it her workshop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We might be able to cut her off from it if she isn't present, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Smash whatever she was working on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take what she values from her first thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought you might."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "What are we waiting for, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing at all."

Onward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Onward!

...Mordor is significantly worse in terms of being hot and dry as fuck, with no clean water nor growing plants, than the pass in was.

Permalink Mark Unread

One wonders as to the purpose of this desolation.

Permalink Mark Unread

...It'd complicate getting an army in.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Point.

Permalink Mark Unread

She probably expects one.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has enough reason to. If Aredhel hadn't shown up, Celebrimbor might even have ended up leading it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you definitely would have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not so swiftly as this journey."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which is why I dragged you out of your sulk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. The journey's not yet over.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll just need to push through.

Permalink Mark Unread

So they will.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mordor doesn't need armies. Doesn't need a sword lifted against them. The dry land, the poisoned waters, the heat of the air, the grief and hatred and rage that falls instead of rain, the clouds dark and heavy...

And the volcano ever before them. An eruption that doesn't falter as they approach - that grows even, lava spilling from massive vents that tear rips in the landscape, dangerous fumes whistling through cracks, roiling earthquakes - the shocks growing stronger and closer together as they walk - the earth swelling below their feet like an overripe fruit as they climb -

The power thrumming beneath them. A flame that renders all other flames as mere candles.

Permalink Mark Unread

A match to the bitch's blackened heart in truth, this land. It fits her well, and Celebrimbor is coming to hate this place as much as her.

"The culmination of a great work approaches. We must hurry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah I've noticed." She picks up the pace a bit. "I don't like that we haven't been intercepted..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Either she does not consider us a credible threat, or whatever she's about to finish will kill us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or it's big enough to continuously take up all her attention and power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Functionally the same as the latter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And could always be all three." She hits a less hazardous stretch of ground and breaks into an easy run.

Permalink Mark Unread

One thing this trip has undeniably been good for is Celebrimbor's athleticness. She keeps pace.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel wouldn't have allowed anything else.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a threshold near the crater at the top. An opening in the side, one of the few which does not belch smoke nor flame -

They make it past the threshold a scant hair before the world outside it erupts in blinding light and power and flame -

But the hall it seems is shielded, and while the air is so thick with power they can hardly breathe, and while the entire place shakes like a ship dashed upon stormy rocks - it holds, at least in terms of structural integrity and not being actively on fire or full of lava.

Permalink Mark Unread

This might be... worse than anticipated.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Since fucking when was Sauron this strong???"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never, that I saw. Unless she concealed more of the rings' potential than I thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would violate everything we learned about the Ainur, and even about the nature of the world..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you think the goal of all our tinkering was, if not the violation of the natural order?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, she's putting it to good use now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then let's go cut off her hands."

Permalink Mark Unread

Further in - Aredhel will keep her bow strung and knocked, her long dagger in easy reach at her waist, a hum in the back of her throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her previous sentence notwithstanding, Celebrimbor herself is ready to slit a throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't find Sauron.

They do find a rift in the air, a mass of fire, a contained explosion in eternal motion. And they do find that sense of power continuing to build, though it's - different. It isn't the choking oppressive smog of the world outside, but a common power, a hum growing around all of them - a Song any can grab and twist to their own ends if they dare raise their voice loud enough.

This is not how Sauron wields her Power; the world outside - its heaviness, its barren pettiness and cruelty, its hoarding of all power for itself, the boot it pressed on the back of any who entered - those were fully typical of the Sauron they fought in the first age. She shares only as a trap, a hollow lie - she doesn't bestow boons on her enemy for their defiance, nor does she walk so plainly and unguarded.

This is not Sauron.

This is worse

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Worse is one word for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fire flares out in a blinding spiral -

- Which resolves into a horrifyingly familiar shape. A woman, perhaps a hair shorter than Celebrimbor; her skin like a flame given flesh; her eyes like lava, now warmer and glowing, now darker and cooling; her hair like the untamed void before the Song began, the limitless potential of all existence; her raiment like the wild laughing earth beneath their feet, like an explosion, like a birth of new worlds.

"Not quite the welcome I expected on my return to this world," Melkor says, and her laugh is the most awful and awesome of everything she is - her very voice is Song, and her laughter echoes with all the wild fury bound in the forges of the earth. "I truly expected trumpets, whether triumphant or challenging. But this is much more my taste."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, the empty husk of a traitor's workshop?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that where this is? But, no. I meant the faces of those welcoming me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are not here for you, Morgoth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A pity. Both of you have ever been the sort of person I admire. Whatever are you here for, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't you have a sun to blot out or something? Why would you care?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Sun seems no longer run by a Maia; I have no objection to that. And I care because I am curious about one who can stand before me without flinching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What use would flinching be? I came here to kill a Maia."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? Which one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sauron." The venom in Celebrimbor's voice condenses a slightly acidic mist out of the lingering power of Melkor's arrival.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, what has she done now?" Melkor speaks with the approximate tone of someone whose beloved dog has a rather terrible habit of chewing on the furniture.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Treachery, perversion of my craft, and personal betrayal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite serious accusations; it is little wonder then that you wish for revenge."

Permalink Mark Unread

Huff. "What insight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It displeases me that she's still up to her same tricks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then why haven't you cracked a continent on her head about it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right now, it seems you would prefer the privilege of chastising her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't mind, as long as it was painful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awww, but it's so much more fun when you can hear them screaming."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fun is not the objective."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not even as a secondary?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A distant one, perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you should bump it up a little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because taking advice from Morgoth has worked out famously well in the past."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm more reliable on some things, like matters of fun and revenge."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Duly noted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like instruction in those matters? To include assistance in capturing her, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would that cost me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me watch! Mostly for the fun of it, but also to verify she's been appropriately chastised."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do in fact intend to kill her. I trust that will not prove a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be impressed if you can make it stick."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure you will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then it won't prove a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm."

"There is nothing more to discuss here, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do have questions about what has occurred in my absence... But those can wait for more aesthetic surroundings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll spruce up the landscape a little bit first, how about? Make it slightly less actively deadly to the Incarnate.

Permalink Mark Unread

How thoughtful.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'd be a pity if Celebrimbor couldn't even leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Slightly more than a pity.

Permalink Mark Unread

A tragedy, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though this is still Sauron's workshop. Given time, she could come up with a solution.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could potentially surpass me, given enough time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

She likes a woman with confidence.

Permalink Mark Unread

How enjoyable for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she wasn't summoned back for nothing. Apparently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I plan to do quite a lot with my reprieve from the Void, actually. Starting with enjoying not being in a featureless void."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does your list include making better choices so as to avoid being sent back?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on what you would call a 'better' choice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One that sets fewer than, say, ninety percent of the powers of the world against you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be convenient, wouldn't it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially for so long as I am within the radius of retaliation."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "It's unfortunate they object so much to my normal hobbies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If they hadn't, you would have found others, I am sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think I enjoy being objectionable?" she says, like someone whose entire place in the narrative of the world is flipping off God and refusing to do as told.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And do you enjoy being normal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What makes you think I am that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You did imply I should find less objectionable hobbies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The normal among my kin set sail back to Valinor many years ago."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it is simply the wrath of the Powers you wish to avoid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The current shape of the continent is aesthetically pleasing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh dear, did they change the maps again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That you have to ask should be answer enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Beleriand was sunk, before they retreated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dreadful management - though I'm guessing that wasn't directly because of the war, but because they failed to take into account what the cost kicking me out of the world would have for the landscape I'd helped create and then invested myself into."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps. I did not have a close perspective to the event."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be difficult to confirm at this point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And hopefully it remains irrelevant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunately, the Valar might object to me no matter what I do. Though I am not planning to invest myself in the landscape again, at least not to the same extent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just so we're clear," Celebrimbor says, "if you get me blown up and Mandos allows me to return, I will not be open to you continuing to flirt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you are open now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm flattered to have as beautiful and intelligent a woman as you receptive to my flirting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wouldn't be the first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You surely get numerous admirers."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All those who are not intimidated by my chilly demeanor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Their loss."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But your gain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad for it then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

Now, as to getting out of here...

Permalink Mark Unread

The fastest route depends on where she's going.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor wants to examine the tower, to see if Sauron left any clues.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can move that way fairly quickly if Celebrimbor and her companion are willing to be carried by her power.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not on the first date.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll have to get through by walking.

Melkor at least makes the path clear and pleasant, with abundant water and food in easy reach.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is Suspicious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very. But at least she hasn't lied yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they can't go much longer without food or water.

Permalink Mark Unread

So, take what they can get, for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best they can do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite.

So, to the tower.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a long walk.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's nothing new. It's been a long walk ever since Aredhel showed up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor's gotten better at that, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Practice!

Permalink Mark Unread

Which she's about to get a little bit more of, though in a more pleasing environment; it's downright a vacation, in a sense.

Permalink Mark Unread

Much better than the walk in, it's true.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just about anything would be better than the walk in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Onward to the Tower then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ominous lurking monstrosity that it is.

Do they encounter any troubles on their path?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope! It's an almost eerily pleasant walk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Having a Power beside you is good for something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Especially one that is making zero effort to hide what she is - and either she's gotten more powerful since being cast out, or she was playing with them during the wars of the First Age. Their armies couldn't have done much about her casually waving her hand to neatly rearrange a blasted hellscape into a verdant and abundant forest, the dry heat replaced by cool mists, the dark and forboding clouds batted away.

Permalink Mark Unread

The 'playing with them' hypothesis has more weight now than Celebrimbor would have assigned it yesterday.

Permalink Mark Unread

What is she talking about, Melkor is, as a person, completely solemn and dedicated to her ideals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah huh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though she does currently seem to be playing around a little - rearranging things (not immediately around Celebrimbor and Aredhel) and grinning and then rearranging them some more, with increasingly fantastical results - apparently just because she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Showing off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm enjoying not being in the Void! And I'm enjoying having the powers I did at the dawn of the universe back within my grasp; that pesky lifetime limit on magic had put quite the damper on my enjoyment of the world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you no longer subject to that restriction?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll need to experiment more to find out if it's that, or if I've simply been reset."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure that will be interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem experimentally minded, if you'd like to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to be persuaded?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not until you've more clearly differentiated yourself from the last Power to request a collaboration."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have a way you'd like me to do that, or should I simply be my delightful self?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The latter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Duly noted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'll be creating no gemstones for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She twists her fingers - and a swirling rainbow crystal that has absolutely no right to exist twirls above her hand. "I can make my own well enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sets it to orbit around her own head, casting glints of multicolor light over her skin. "I do love pretty things, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That much, the stories tell of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So they get at least one thing right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps as many as several!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Time will tell, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you get to know me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As evidence accumulates."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Different words for the same idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But a slight variance in connotation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't want to get to know me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am maintaining an appropriate degree of caution."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Awww," she says, but she doesn't sound as disappointed as one would expect.

Permalink Mark Unread

For arcane evil god reasons, most likely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh ye of little faith, especially in Melkor's ability to have all of her thoughts derailed by a pretty girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

A flattering thought, if Celebrimbor would admit to contemplating it. Which she won't.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

See above.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can be patient. Probably.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anyway.

Eventually, they will make it to the tower.

Permalink Mark Unread

The tower: is tall and foreboding (even with Melkor idly festooning the area with flowers), and, also, locked.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is it a pickable sort of lock?

Permalink Mark Unread

A magic sort of lock.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

"Can you open this?" she asks Melkor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll take a few moments to do so without damaging anything - but, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would appreciate it if you would, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you wish."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Appreciated."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets it open after a little bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Now, what fatal traps has that bitch left behind?

Permalink Mark Unread

A tremendous variety! Most of them are magical, but there's a few mundane traps thrown in for good measure (all of such an exquisite craftsmanship that they verge on magic, of course).

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately, Celebrimbor has spent a considerable amount of time considering how to reach the target of her vengeance, and has several trap-breaking solutions prepared.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's tedious, but she can get through them in one piece - especially with Melkor's help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm.

Now, what projects were being worked on here?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like she left in a hurry, though she tried to take most things - notes especially - with her. But Celebrimbor can find hints that she was doing... Something... With the volcano, and something with trying to break the limits set on them at the beginning of the world, and some attempt to dominate the other Rings of Power - and other, more specific means of domination that wouldn't require someone accepting a gift from her.

Permalink Mark Unread

The volcano notes will presumably be of interest to Melkor. Celebrimbor is more interested in the domination notes. If she can usurp Sauron's control before killing her, all the better.

Permalink Mark Unread

Looks like Sauron caused the weakness in the fabric of reality that allowed Melkor to enter... She doesn't think it was wholly intentional, though. Sauron was most likely trying to obtain that power for herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course she was.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a pattern with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Too bad Melkor hasn't done anything about it before now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was far less annoying when she was working for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not for everyone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Regardless, it will end soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you plan to do with her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe I will spend some time with these notes she's so kindly left behind, and devise something... suitable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The domination notes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes an interested noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She deserves to suffer before I kill her, but I must ensure that doesn't give her the opportunity to escape."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She might find having those designs turned against her independently unpleasant..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So much the better, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Naturally."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

If Sauron left any useful material behind, she might as well take that too.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll help with the reclamation efforts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor surely appreciates that.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does make it go much more smoothly and quickly than Celebrimbor expected.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they can set off sooner. Tempting as the workshop setups are, she would prefer an environment she has more control over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want Melkor to not shape her a new workshop, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not here, certainly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll let Celebrimbor pick the location.

Permalink Mark Unread

Outside of Mordor, that's much is for sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

West, perhaps. South of the mountains, she has no desire to be within easy reach of Galadriel either.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor will have to lead on geography (and perhaps her or Aredhel could tell her something about the peoples there, and about the history of the world since her expulsion).

Permalink Mark Unread

That will pass the travel time as pleasantly as anything else.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it's something Aredhel is more or less comfortable with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not exactly what she thought they were getting into, huh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she'd rather leave at this point...

Permalink Mark Unread

Nah, she intends to see the 'helping Celebrimbor get back at her terrible ex' part through.

Permalink Mark Unread

She appreciates that.

Permalink Mark Unread

What are cousins for?

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel has clearly demonstrated that they are for solving problems, as well as creating them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully not both at once.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Not so far.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll try to keep up the streak.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor has every faith in her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She should!

Permalink Mark Unread

Mhm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Any other problems her dear cousin needs solved?

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing urgent, for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the journey continues.

Permalink Mark Unread

They eventually get out of Mordor!

There's some nice river valley here, and some nice woodlands and then a very nice stretch of coastline, though it's all sparsely inhabited. Alternatively, there's the near tail of the White Mountains, which is much less inhabited despite having a commanding and lovely view of the surrounding countryside (not much food, though, so it's not particularly interesting to the hunter gatherers that live here).

Permalink Mark Unread

Privacy would be desirable, of course, though not at the expense of eating...

Permalink Mark Unread

How much food an area contains is something she can fix fairly trivially.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, yes, Celebrimbor had forgotten for a moment that she was traveling with a Great Power.

Permalink Mark Unread

Easy enough to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Evidently.

To the foot of the mountains, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she have in mind what changes she wants?

Permalink Mark Unread

Minimal ones, at least to start with, so as to preserve the character of the land.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can cause a few trees to bear fruit for food, then, and perhaps shape a workshop into the mountain?

Permalink Mark Unread

That will do for a start.

Permalink Mark Unread

Any other requests?

Permalink Mark Unread

An easily-accessible vein of gemstones and precious metals would be nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll form one - with a neatly sorted rainbow of every gem Celebrimbor has heard of and a good number she hasn't, as well as some 'gems' that really should not be in veins, like pearls, obsidian, and amber. The precious metals are formed into broad (and pretty) stripes in their own neatly sorted row.

(The other Valar like to follow Eru's vision for a naturalistic world, and normally gemstones and metals are in logical places in long term stable forms that could have formed there naturally. Melkor apparently has her own vision, though, and that vision involves rainbows.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

Preen!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose I won't need to spend much effort on organizing a sorting system."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can always reorganize if you discover a different system would work better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will keep that in mind as I work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need anything else right now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have enough to be getting along with, I believe."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd like to watch, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very well. Enjoy the show.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is truly fascinating - Melkor's always obtained things directly through the Song, and hers is so powerful that it'd been a question of will and not finesse. She's never crafted, and never cared to spend time watching Aule's ex-followers at their work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Somewhat a pity. The practice is one of the purest expressions of skill in the world.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor's performance makes a persuasive argument for that...

Permalink Mark Unread

She is among the best at what she does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely not just 'among.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Yes. Not to be immodest.

Permalink Mark Unread

But surely honesty is better than modesty.

Permalink Mark Unread

As long as it is honesty.

Permalink Mark Unread

It seems to be from where she's standing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though she might have to see more of Celebrimbor's skill to be certain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately, the work has only just begun.

Permalink Mark Unread

How delightful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

Soon enough, Celebrimbor has a prototype she believes is ready for testing. A simple double-strand braid, with cut stones at either end cleverly designed to interlock.

Permalink Mark Unread

How does she intend to test it?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll need to go find some test subjects. Unless Melkor wants to volunteer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas, her impulse control isn't quite that bad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it seems Celebrimbor must search out a local mortal.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd be delighted to help with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, would she?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course. Especially if they find a nice, pretty girl...

Permalink Mark Unread

One that looks like Melkor, maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Nnnf.)

Quite the idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

They'll see who they can find.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor has an interesting - and unique - idea of 'flirting.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely a Power would not be satisfied by the ordinary sort.

Permalink Mark Unread

Melkor is definitely charmed!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, this means she'll need to be even pickier about their first test subject...

Permalink Mark Unread

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Aredhel wish to participate in the hunt?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll sit this one out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very well. Just the two, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

A bit of quality time together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Just so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then what are they waiting for?

Permalink Mark Unread

Off to meet the locals.

Permalink Mark Unread

While they're journeying - any criteria other than 'looks like Melkor?'

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, ideally, they also don't want any mobs stirred up.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll try to find someone easily led astray, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor doesn't imagine there will be too many sophisticates in the area.

Permalink Mark Unread

There might be someone with good taste, as well as a number of impressionable minds.

Permalink Mark Unread

They shall see.

Permalink Mark Unread

They will.

Permalink Mark Unread

So, where are the settlements in the area?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a lot of hunter gatherers in the woods, and fisher gatherers along the river and coast. The river has some settlements with walls - it's prime real estate - but most of everyone else is gathered into seasonal or temporary camps. There's a trading outpost where the river meets the ocean, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Start at the river settlements and work down to the coast, she thinks. That should be the easiest way to see the greatest proportion of the population.

Permalink Mark Unread

A solid idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's no one who looks quite like Melkor in the first few villages - and they're all suspicious of outsiders. It'll be difficult to take a pretty girl without stirring up a mob.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas. But the outlooks should change as they get closer to the trading hub, one would imagine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

People in the trading hub are at least much more welcoming of outsiders - and river villagers with good prospects, especially younger women looking to get away from their families, seem to gravitate here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

And after a while - they spot a girl who does resemble Melkor. She's walking slowly, keeping to the edge of the crowds on the main road, and she looks - not really lost, exactly, but like she doesn't quite fit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, a target. Celebrimbor will approach.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A model for a new piece of jewelry of my design."

Permalink Mark Unread

She raises an eyebrow, and looks more thoroughly at Celebrimbor- and flushes a little bit. "Me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You. You have a look that I think will complement it rather nicely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm flattered, my Lady." (Celebrimbor looks noble enough that everyone seems to be assuming that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

"I would have you accompany me back to my workshop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And how far is this workshop, my Lady?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Several days' journey. Will that prove a problem for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No one would come looking for me... And I'm sure a noble lady like you could provide for my needs..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course, my dear. Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then who am I to say no to my Lady's request?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent. Have you any possessions you wish to gather?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only a few, my Lady."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let us be on our way to collect them, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads the way to a small lodging house - one near the docks, in a fairly sketchy part of town. She seems to have fallen on (or run away into) hard times fairly recently, given she doesn't look quite like she belongs here.

She has very few possessions stored in her room (most of which are camping supplies), and everything she does own can be carried easily by just her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Clearly Celebrimbor has chosen well.

They can now begin the journey back upriver to the mountains.

Permalink Mark Unread

She - very respectfully - asks questions of her Lady and her companion (who the woman has definitely noticed resembles her) as they walk. (She's pretty clearly angling for a more permanent position; though her mind seems to go more towards 'a Lady's maid' than what Celebrimbor actually intends.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps something along those lines can be arranged.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will, of course, do her best to impress.

Permalink Mark Unread

One does hope so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her best is very good! (And she's immensely curious if her Lady has any other servants, of course.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Not at the moment. She is new to these lands, and living simply at the moment.

Permalink Mark Unread

A noble Lady deserves a contingent of servants, if she may be so bold, who will attend to her every desire.

Permalink Mark Unread

We'll see how the first one goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to be a model example, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Small wiggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

And soon enough, they reach the workshop. Celebrimbor directs the girl to set her things down and come inside for the fitting.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does so with a little bounce in her step.

Permalink Mark Unread

The necklace is sealed in a box. Celebrimbor directs the girl to turn around while she opens it, then loops the necklace tight around her throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shiver!

Permalink Mark Unread

With a tiny click, she locks the clasp in place.

Then, reaching out to harmonize with the hum of the now-activated artifact, Celebrimbor says "Now, kneel."

Permalink Mark Unread

?!?!

(Her body kneels by itself.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, it works. Very good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Beautiful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Turn to face us, girl. Stay on your knees."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shuffles around, her thoughts still a confused whirlwind. (She's nervous, of course, but... Not all that scared.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor tilts the girl's head up by the chin. "How would you describe the sensation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She has a bit of trouble with that, but - it's weird. Her body is doing whatever her Lady commands without hesitation or input from her - and it feels pleasant, though she doesn't know if that's - what's causing that - but doesn't stop her from feeling nervous.

Permalink Mark Unread

And what happens if she tries to resist?

Permalink Mark Unread

That hadn't even occurred to her to try! Does her Lady want her to attempt to disobey?

Permalink Mark Unread

As contradictory as it may seem, yes. This a prototype, it requires testing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries!

This does absolutely nothing! It feels the exact same as when Celebrimbor is commanding her - her body's just flat out not listening to her, except where Celebrimbor gives her control. (Celebrimbor is aware she's trying, but it doesn't put any strain on the artifact.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Not unexpected, for a mortal. A Power, of course, will be a different story, but this is a promising sign.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Melkor might be able to help with estimates for how things will change with a Power.

Permalink Mark Unread

That would be most helpful.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's happy to be of service.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lovely.

And there are some more experiments to be done still with the prototype...

Permalink Mark Unread

An exciting thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh yes. Hopefully their model is still cooperative.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very cooperative. (Her nerves are rapidly fading too, replaced with a realization that she likes this, actually. She likes it a lot.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent. Perhaps a long-term position is in the offing after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle! (Internally, if the collar won't permit external movement.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Though of course some upgrades to the collar will be in order. Perhaps a more personalized aesthetic.

Permalink Mark Unread

If her Lady wishes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good girl.

"Have you a name, dear?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Not one she likes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to have a new one, then. Hmm... (Glance to Melkor, who the girl so resembles.) How about- Melmire.

Permalink Mark Unread

She loves it! (Happy shiver.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Melkor grins teasingly at Celebrimbor as well. "Interesting choice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seemed appropriate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially to your rather unique flirting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you've not yet lost interest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That must mean it's working."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

For them both.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does seem that way.

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

(Cute.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(She is!)

Permalink Mark Unread

And if Melvire is staying, accommodations will need to be created for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

What is Celebrimbor's desire there?

Permalink Mark Unread

Something... snug, she thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

That still leaves her on full display?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps walls of crystal, then, or else a beautiful metal cage...

Permalink Mark Unread

A cage has possibility.

Permalink Mark Unread

And leaves room for Celebrimbor to decorate it further.

Permalink Mark Unread

And even move it around, if the fancy strikes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Should she make it portable, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Why not? They can always make another.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you wish."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Any other design considerations, or should Melkor get creative?

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor would like to see what she comes up with.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll put in her best, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She expects great things.

Permalink Mark Unread

A pale rose gold seems appropriate, here (it coordinates well with her skin tone), filigree that seems delicate yet is strong enough to hold the mightiest of Men swirling in a sphere - a wholly uncomfortable place for a girl like Melvire to rest in. The gold has subtle waves of color like fire, and shapes reminescent of burning mountains and curling flowers and sharp daggers. It's frigid to the touch, though the slightest hint of fire will warm it enough to burn - and the harsh edges mean it'll press deliciously into any skin pushed against it... The gaps are large enough to show off the form of the girl bound within, but a nearly invisible mesh keeps her from finding relief by reaching out - without dampening Celebrimbor's ability to reach in, as the mesh parts when pushed inwards. It has a cleverly wrought seam that meets at an elegant lock, for when Celebrimbor wishes to retrieve her gem.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite ingenious, really. Celebrimbor is impressed. But then, Melkor surely has experience in this area.

Permalink Mark Unread

Far more than any other.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least now that expertise in on Celebrimbor's side.

Permalink Mark Unread

The best place to have it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though Celebrimbor's pets might end up a little torn about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made.

Permalink Mark Unread

This particular pet isn't torn at all!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she's starting off easy.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can help discipline any future servants who try to object, even...

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps, if she continues to behave herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her Lady's good girl!

Permalink Mark Unread

None other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug wiggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Speaking of wiggles, let's make sure that cage fits.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to curl up very tightly... But it does fit her perfectly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Beautiful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Downright gorgeous.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well done indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Preen!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can see I'll have plenty of inspiration at hand for the next iteration."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Further gems?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps. But the ultimate goal remains Sauron."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want me to create her cage as well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps. I might wish to do so myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to see what you come up with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you doubt me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all. But imagining something is no substitute for experiencing it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Beginning to crave an experience of your own?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Perhaps I was talking about experiencing my dear subordinate's humiliation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You would know your own mind best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I still prefer to keep an air of mystery."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have to give you some lofty goal to aim for, don't I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A Noldo is nothing without an ambition, tis true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm providing you with enrichment."

Permalink Mark Unread

Skeptical eyebrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Innocent grin!

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh huh.

Well, she has work to attend to.

Permalink Mark Unread

She won't get in her way.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though do feel free to watch."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she will.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor will be showing off, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her fugue this time will not be so uninterrupted as last; there is Melmire to consider after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can assist with the care and feeding (and entertaining).

Permalink Mark Unread

Watching Melkor entertain is also entertaining.

Permalink Mark Unread

A good show while she takes her breaks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Keeps her freshly stocked with inspiration.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gives her a chance to relax properly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very important, when engaged in a long-term effort.

Permalink Mark Unread

Keep her full momentum going.

Permalink Mark Unread

Speaking of which, Celebrimbor is just about done with the next iteration. Incorporating some of what she was working on in Eregion, this version will also be capable of selectively augmenting the wearer's senses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Exciting possibilities.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed, though it yet requires testing...

Permalink Mark Unread

Will Melmire be the test subject?

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor doesn't seem to have any other volunteers to hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Extremely constrained wiggles!

Permalink Mark Unread

She can come out of the cage, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good now she has more room to wiggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to stand still to get her present.

This new one is of solid construction, with words of power engraved inside and out. It fits quite snugly around Melmire's neck and locks solidly in place.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's very good about holding perfectly still for her Lady.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does that remain true as Celebrimbor activates the collar, then winds a hand into Melmire's hair and yanks sharply.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does if her Lady orders it!

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Melkor want to try her own experiments?

Permalink Mark Unread

If Celebrimbor will oblige her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feel free.

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

What valuable information Celebrimbor is collecting here.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's willing to provide even more...

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, is she? Is she willing to take guidance on what areas Celebrimbor would like to see explored?

Permalink Mark Unread

For now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they should use this time productively.

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

Lovely.

Permalink Mark Unread

All three of them are.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very true indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something to celebrate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Isn't that what they've been doing?

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely they can celebrate even more?

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll have to make the attempt and see what comes of it.

Permalink Mark Unread

More experimenting!

Permalink Mark Unread

It seems the well of ideas won't be running dry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not anytime soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

And thus refreshed, Celebrimbor will return to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not too long after - when she finally gets around to sleeping - she finds a naked girl (who bears an oddly strong resemblance to Melmire), bruised with numerous closed over wounds (the ones still inclined to bleed have bandages on them, so no blood is getting on Celebrimbor's sheets), tied and gagged and blindfolded, with a note pinned to her that says -

Ran across her on my hunting trip (the arrow wounds are the bandaged ones, they're not infected, I cleaned them out), figured you'd like her.

Let me know when we're getting back to the murder; I'll be out hunting until then - getting a few leads on your ex.

-Aredhel

Permalink Mark Unread

Well now. What a thoughtful little present.

"Hello lovely," she says, rolling the girl over to assess the damage. "How nice to see you here."

Permalink Mark Unread

The girl can't wiggle much, unfortunately, though she does twitch and moan. (Her back is worse than her front, though also carefully treated so she isn't bleeding everywhere.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're in quite a state, aren't you. I hope you didn't annoy my cousin too much." Hmm. The bandages look fine, and she doesn't really want to go to the effort of picking the girl up right now... "If you've lasted this long, I suppose you can manage on more night, yes?" Celebrimbor scoots the girl over to make room for her to lay down on the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whine!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Pet pet. "Settle down, dear. It's bedtime."

Permalink Mark Unread

Confused whine?

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor climbs into bed, snuggling the new girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries to squirm, but doesn't get very far - especially since squirming clearly hurts, making her whimper a bit before she settles.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a good girl.

And to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

The girl doesn't wake her up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good, good.

Then it will be in a fine mood the next day that Celebrimbor seeks out Melkor and Melmire, new girl slung over her shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What have we here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A present from my cousin, it seems. Only slightly used."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A most lovely present."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite. Might you help me in preparing her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor finds a convenient clean benchtop and deposits the girl there.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you have me do first?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mend her wounds, I think. Aredhel is a competent medic, but not a physician. I will go fetch a collar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you wish." And she gets to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Celebrimbor will retrieve the next prototype iteration, this one tall enough to cover the entire distance from clavicle to chin, stiff metal plates formed in a circle with fabric padding the inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's entirely healed Celebrimbor's new toy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent. Then off with the blindfold and gag, for a proper introduction.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives a distinct impression of being grumbly when Celebrimbor fully reveals her face. She also looks immediately at Celebrimbor, evaluating her. "You Aredhel's cousin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am. You spoke with her, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. For a good bit. We've got similar interests. And I'm the fastest runner around, she said she's the best huntress around. I bet she couldn't catch me." She then mumbles something that might be 'cheating bastard elves.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Outrunning an arrow is quite difficult, I am given to understand."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pout! "I dodge projectiles all the time! It was the freaking ambush."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is a key part of the hunt."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grumble grumble pout.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you lost your bet, obviously. What were the terms of the wager?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...If she bagged me, she got to do what she wanted." It'd sounded sexy at the time and is honestly still kind of exciting, depends on how much truth Aredhel was telling about her cousin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It looked like she had quite a bit of fun with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk!

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite.

"And now you've been gifted to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What're you going to do with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor puts the collar down in the girl's field of view.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My cousin has always been the more skilled huntress. My areas of expertise are slightly more cerebral, shall we say. You will find there is more to this piece than meets the eye."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What does it do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In a word? Control, as that has been my focus of late. This particular prototype is a slight diversion from what I suspect the final product will become, but I am nonetheless interested to see what results it produces."

Permalink Mark Unread

Interested noise!

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor will untie the girl enough that she can sit up, so it's easier to get the collar on her.

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

And with a click, she locks it in place.

"There we are. Now..." With a flex of her will, she grips the collar's control on the girl, and orders her to stop breathing.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!

(She stops breathing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, good. Celebrimbor lets that go on for twenty seconds or so before allowing the girl to start again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts gasping!

Permalink Mark Unread

"A successful test. How did you like it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shiver! "A promising start."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed. As for the other aspects..." Part of control is self-control. Celebrimbor hums as she plucks at the collar's functions, delegating to the girl the ability to enhance her own senses.

Permalink Mark Unread

She dials every single sense up to max! And then starts writhing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quick on the uptake, this one.

Permalink Mark Unread

In a lot of ways.

Permalink Mark Unread

That has yet to be proven. Celebrimbor will undo the rest of the girl's bonds.

Permalink Mark Unread

More room to writhe!

Permalink Mark Unread

She does writhe pleasingly. Celebrimbor will indulge her for a while before cutting her off from the enhancements.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww...

Permalink Mark Unread

"There is other business to attend to. Have you a name, girl?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would you guess it is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You strike me as..." Hum. "Celvire, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that's cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will take it, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Introductions, then. Celvire, I am Celebrimbor and you now belong to me. This is Melkor, who healed you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very pretty!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A sentiment I can agree with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor calls over Melmire, the last member of her little research group.

Permalink Mark Unread

She comes up, obediently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Melmire, this is Celvire. She will be joining you in service. I expect the two of you to get along."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will I be helping train her, my Lady?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be an honor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I trust you will instill in her the same sense of duty you possess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I swear, my Lady."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

Excited wiggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor will let her pets get acquainted, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Melkor and Celebrimbor can plan their next moves while they watch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor thinks she has enough of a handle on the theory now to begin work on the final model of collar.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anything Melkor can do to help?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, it would be helpful if there was a Power available for testing...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice try," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alas," laments Celebrimbor. "I shall have to continue in my efforts, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great works cannot be rushed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True enough. Though it is an unforgiveable lack that I've yet to make you a piece of your own, regardless of the relevance to my current project. Perhaps a diadem?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something for my hair would be lovely - or a dagger. Or both!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Noted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I look forward to whatever you come up with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am a master of my craft, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The best there is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug.

"I should get to work, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll leave you to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though do let me know if you wish for any help or inspiration."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe I can manage with the ample amount of both you've already provided."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

And so Celebrimbor will retire back to her workshop.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it's not too much longer before she calls on Melkor to hand over her present. She has Melvire on her knees, offering up a lacquered wooden box engraved with some truly salacious designs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She spends a while admiringly examining the box before opening it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Inside, nestled in dark velvet, is a lovely little tiara, white gold formed into swoops and peaks with diamonds at the apexes. A chain of rubies like drops of blood trail down from either end, which could be woven into a hairstyle or used to anchor a fine silvery mithril veil, wrought so finely that it flows like silk

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, it's lovely!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad you like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you put it on me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. How would you like the tassels?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In my hair, for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you wish." Celebrimbor steps around behind Melkor and with deft fingers places the tiara on her head and arranges the strings of gems.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm good.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your hair really is lovely," she murmurs, combing through it. "Which is a more meaningful compliment to one such as you than it might otherwise be."

Permalink Mark Unread

She summons a mirror. "Your work only makes it lovelier."

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor holds Melkor's hair to show off her work in the best position. "A multiplicative effect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I highlight the beauty of your work in turn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The whole becoming more than the sum of its parts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A collaborative effort."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "And speaking of collaboration... the tiara will also allow you a degree of control over the collars while you wear it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I expect it will be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to test to be sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An appropriate celebration."

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

Shall they go see the pretty little gems, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Let's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

Quite a refreshing and... inspirational break.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gives her quite a few new ideas?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's looking forward to how they play out.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is sure to be a show.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll be waiting with bated breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Celebrimbor will get right to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Let her know if she can do anything to help - but if not, she'll keep Celebrimbor's gems entertained while Celebrimbor works.

Permalink Mark Unread

She may need some additional materials, but that sounds otherwise like a fair division of labor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just let me know what and when."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll leave her to it, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Unless she'd rather watch, as ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Watching does sound fun... And she can either entertain Celebrimbor's gems from a distance (easy for someone like her), or provide a side show when Celebrimbor needs to unwind...

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds most agreeable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then that's what she'll do.

Permalink Mark Unread

So Celebrimbor gets to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some time later, she seals the results of her efforts in an ebon box with a lock that opens only to her touch, and pronounces herself ready to begin seeking out Sauron again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she have her own ideas of where to look first?

Permalink Mark Unread

No, but Aredhel might.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's been spending her time somehow or another.

Permalink Mark Unread

A hunter at heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where is she now?

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor will attempt to contact her via osanwë.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aredhel's always a pain in the ass to reach - but Celebrimbor's gotten to know her pretty well over their journey together, on top of their long familiarity before all this. So she gets back a faint (and grumpy) 'Yeah?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I am ready to get back to the murder.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Great. I'll head back.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I await your return eagerly.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sure.' She seems done talking.

Permalink Mark Unread

And now there's just a little time to kill before she gets back.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has plenty of ideas for how they can spend that time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor can just imagine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh?

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps she can demonstrate, and Melkor can see if her guesses are correct.

Permalink Mark Unread

An excellent idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread
Permalink Mark Unread

They'll be well-rested when Aredhel shows up.

Permalink Mark Unread

And ready to set out, she hopes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course. She doesn't want to disrespect her cousin's time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Has she found any leads to follow?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Yeah.

So, bad fucking news, but.

She's pretty certain Sauron's gone to Numenor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Won't be easy to pry her out of there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Numenor?

Permalink Mark Unread

An island civilization about halfway between here and Valinor. Founded by Elros and his descendants, and currently the most sophisticated kingdom of Man.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do the Valar pay it more attention than other kingdoms of Men?

Permalink Mark Unread

More than 'literally none?' Perhaps.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll need to think about how to avoid attention too, then - Melkor doesn't want this particular vacation to be cut short.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah Aredhel can third not dealing with that headache.

Permalink Mark Unread

So they'll need to find a subtle approach.

Permalink Mark Unread

And keep Sauron from escalating and then escaping in the chaos.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm. Some reconnaissance is in order, it sounds like.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Celebrimbor (or Melkor) think she can hide them from Sauron?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not without a good bit of work...

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably... It can be tricky, though, and Sauron might notice that someone's hiding.

Permalink Mark Unread

Could they use that to lure her out, perhaps?

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe... And she won't want to draw the attention of the Valar either.

Permalink Mark Unread

As long as it doesn't draw the attention of too many mortals, either.

Permalink Mark Unread

She probably has plans for the mortals.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, assuredly. But she might still be in a stage where they can work around that.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it might discourage her from making a scene.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like it might be worth trying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Works for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very well. They'll need to set out for the coast, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily pretty close from here.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a port, as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Coast with no port wouldn't be as helpful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Celebrimbor has learned the basic principles of shipcraft, but yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Takes forever to do it right.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully they won't need to.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can speed construction, if needed.

Permalink Mark Unread

With luck, they can simply buy passage.

Permalink Mark Unread

Won't know until they try.

Oh, and - are Celebrimbor's little pets tagging along?

Permalink Mark Unread

They will be staying here, to keep the place livable.

Permalink Mark Unread

That'll make logistics easier.

Permalink Mark Unread

It should, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

The elves and Vala can travel faster without the humans, too - though she suspects Celebrimbor and Aredhel still don't want her to transport them herself?

Permalink Mark Unread

No, but that might be an escape plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then. Shall they get moving?

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards to the port.

Permalink Mark Unread

The first leg of the trip should be calm, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't jinx us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. My apologies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's get going then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Off on the next step of this little adventure.
