Xandar is, while far from the most densely populated planet in the galaxy, still a strongly urban place, with its twelve billion inhabitants clustered on artificial islands. The urban design is spacious, designed to flaunt the wealth of an empire that terraformed an inhospitable planet into a testament to luxury as their new capital. The population is diverse in some ways - plenty of species are represented here - and horribly uniform in others - just about everyone in sight is well polished and respectable, and non-humanoids are incredibly rare.

Still, it's a really good place to pawn off rare and high value items like bizarre artifacts found in the depths of an ancient temple - the buyer for Ash's main prize is stationed here in a fancy pawn shop overlooking the main parkway, but she can probably unload a lot of minor crap on the assorted museums, only some of which care about provenance of artifacts and whether any laws were broken in obtaining them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ash kinda hates Xandar. It's too clean, too polished, too uptight. Almost everything she considers fun is more or less outlawed. They don't even do their own fighting, they pilot remote drones for that. Fuckin' waste is what it is.

The one upside is that they're rich, and enough trade flows through the port that there are backdoors if you know where to look, to turn priceless artifacts into priced artifacts and then into cash. Starting with the most expensive, obviously, because the one thing she will give these pampered fucks credit for is that their banks keep her money safe. Not that she expects anyone to be able to pickpocket her here, but still.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she reaches the Broker's pawn shop, he's alone behind his counter, working on some little fiddly thing. He looks up and says, "Ms Quill," with some wariness in his tone. "It's unusual to see you here alone. Do you have something for me - ?"

(He'd commissioned the Ravagers to find the orb, of course, but that's not the only item he has a bounty out on, and he'll buy many miscellaneous items the Ravagers come across, if they're valuable and rare enough.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think I'd bother stopping over on this shithole if I didn't?" She pulls the silvery orb out and tosses it onto the counter.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Xandar can hardly be called - " he starts, then startles when he sees the orb. "Ah, you Ravagers work exceptionally quickly, Miss Quill - though may I ask, where is Yondu?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He doesn't need to be here if I'm the one you're paying, now does he?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it was Yondu I initially offered the job to..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And now I'm the one with the goods. Are you really gonna fight me on this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He folds. "That was not my intent, Miss Quill." He starts his usual process of verification, placing the orb on an advanced scanner and taking out several tools. "Do you want the funds transferred to your usual account?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To my private one."

Permalink Mark Unread

He hums as he works. "I will complete the transfer as soon as I finish verification." His fingers flick, and the queue'd transfer pulls up on a small screen - a staggering amount, far more than implied by what Yondu had promised to the Ravagers as their individual shares. Enough for Ash to retire and live the rest of her life in the sort of luxury that suffuses Xandar -

And it implies an even more staggering amount being offered directly for this orb, given how small a share many in the Broker's trade tend to pass on to those directly acquiring the goods. (Far, far more than the kind of money spent on the ordinary sort of priceless artifacts.)

"Though... I must note, Miss Quill, I would prefer not to have Yondu asking me why the money isn't in your Ravagers account."

Permalink Mark Unread

And that's why she swiped this job out from under Yondu's nose.

"Feel free to tell him to come to me with questions. I'm the one who almost got shot for this piece of shit, not them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were shot at? By who?" he asks, in the tone of a man wondering if he needs to give his security team an updated briefing and also a raise (not that he would admit to having a security team; it's uncouth).

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some mercs. Not very talented, considering the size of this payout."

Permalink Mark Unread

That visibly relieves him. "Perhaps someone else was looking to keep a bigger cut for themselves... Did they give any indication of who hired them?" Always good to scope out the competition, after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of them said something about some asshole named Ronan," she offers.

Permalink Mark Unread

He freezes like a small animal caught by a predator's gaze. "Ro - Ronan! Are you sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Pretty sure, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - I'm sorry, but if Ronan is involved, then I can't take part in this - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man, just push the damn button and transfer the money."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would still need to transport the orb to my buyer - and if I had the money to hire enough security to could protect me from someone like that, I wouldn't be in this business, I'd be buying my own planet to retire to - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then give me your buyer's name and I'll go direct, you pissant little bitch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I - "

He's protested before about protecting the identities of his clients.

He is, however, a coward at heart before anything else, and the threat in front of him is much more important than the threat that hasn't found him yet.

"My buyer is the Collector Taneleer Tivan, leader of the Tivan Group." Even as... Removed from politics as the Ravagers tend to be, she's heard of the Tivan Group - they mostly run in circles far more refined than the Ravagers, but conflicts between a massive and prestigious criminal syndicate and a massive and disreputable pack of smugglers and bandits are bound to happen from time to time. The Ravagers have almost always come out the worse for those conflicts; the Tivan Group broadly isn't considered worth tangoing with.

- And then, almost surprising himself, he tells her the price he was offered (it's ten times what he was offering her, of course). "Though... Unless that orb is just some sort of Kree religious artifact - it's possibly worth much more than that, even before hazard pay. Ronan does not care for the refined things in life; anything of interest to him is a matter of religious zealotry, vengeance, or military power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Real fuckin' pleasure doing business with you." She grabs the orb and stuffs it back in her bag, and leaves the shop.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's someone standing outside, holding herself like she's waiting to go in to see the Broker once he's free. "Deal not go well?" she asks, her tone sympathetic and friendly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The fuck you care?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like knowing what's on the mind of a pretty girl like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Big eye roll.

"You lost or what? Red light district's down at the ass end of the island."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This planet even has a red light district? Color me impressed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever." Leaving now.

Permalink Mark Unread

- And the odd girl starts walking beside her, clearly intending to keep trying to talk to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. Doesn't mean Ash has to listen. Or arrange her bags and pockets in such a way that Odd Girl has access to them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She falls back after a little bit, apparently finally getting the hint.

Permalink Mark Unread

About damn time.

Permalink Mark Unread

And that is about the time that she hears the subtle charging of an energy weapon!

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw shit, duck and roll-

Permalink Mark Unread

The first shot goes where her torso was -

The second, almost certainly shot out of a second weapon, clips her as she's rolling, sending a painful jolt through her - fortunately not disabling -

Permalink Mark Unread

Just enough to jar a small round object out of her bag as she draws her weapons and ignites the blades with a snap-crackle and spins to scan for the attacker.

Permalink Mark Unread

The attacker is a - cat? One standing on two legs, wearing a rugged leather jacket over a denim dress and chunky steel toed boots, with handles for energy weapons - and a few good old fashioned knives - and assorted pouches on tool belts criss-crossing her chest, currently holding two sparkling pistols pointed right at Ash.

Permalink Mark Unread

And there's a totally normal cat ambling very idly around the perimeter of the panicking crowd, nevermind that Ash hasn't seen a house cat since leaving Earth.

Permalink Mark Unread

(And a quick motion out of the corner of her eye, like someone darting forward to grab something off the floor...)

Permalink Mark Unread

What the entire fuck-

-Wait shit no that's hers can't let that get away-

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems to be trying very hard to get away!

Permalink Mark Unread

And the cat with the guns lines up another shot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well running after Odd Thief Girl sounds like a good way to dodge!

Permalink Mark Unread

Odd Thief Girl is fast!

...But Ash is faster and can catch up to her before she gets too far.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! Give that back!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope! Ash is going to have to physically stop her from flinging herself over this here railing to the walkway below them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah sure, like Ash isn't perfectly willing to vault right over it after her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets only a few steps away by the time Ash lands next to her - though she's still trying to run.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ash lunges at her, blades first.

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks and rolls - she's holding the orb in her hand -

Permalink Mark Unread

- And Ash hears the whine of those energy guns from above her -

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, motherfucker-

"Fuck off, asscat! I ain't done shit to you!" she yells up, continuing to chase her thief.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You got a bounty on your head, if you didn't notice!" she yells back at Ash -

Permalink Mark Unread

- And she's basically caught up to the thief -

Who looks behind her and then ducks and rolls to the side for no apparent reason even though this means Ash will probably catch her -

Permalink Mark Unread

Hey, she's not going rag on her opponents for making mistakes in her favor.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is the point at which she hears a horrifyingly wet sound from behind her, and what look like colorfully purple-pink octopus tentacles whip around her.

She has maybe a heartbeat or two to react before she's grabbed; this thing is fast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Energy blades vs tentacles, the energy blades usually win. Ash is fast, but now the question is if she's fast enough, whipping her arms up in front of her and uncrossing in a slashing motion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Almost!

But almost isn't all, and two thick tentacles still wrap around her, like slimy bands of steel.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh fuck that's gross.

Come on swords, there's still time to slice this shit off her!

Permalink Mark Unread

She just barely gets herself free!

Permalink Mark Unread

But the thief - who's still pretty tightly holding onto her orb - is still entangled. Her knives don't seem to work as well as Ash's sword - and the tentacles are tensing to drag her back to -

What appears to be the open, distorted mouth of the Totally Normal House Cat from earlier, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh hell no. Hell no.

Ash dives for her, trying to wrest the orb away.

Permalink Mark Unread

No the orb is going inside her clothes - she takes that opportunity to get a vice grip on Ash though!

Permalink Mark Unread

And they both start sliding towards the Oh Hell No kitty. Who has some extra tentacles to make sure they get Ash too!

Permalink Mark Unread

"What the fuck's your problem," she snarls, returning to slashing at the tentacles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Through the power of slash and stab they can both get free! Though they should maybe get some distance - the thief definitely seems to think that, by how she immediately breaks into a sprint.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ash goes after her. Again.

"Stop running, dammit!"

Permalink Mark Unread

- At which point a soft golden light envelops the thief -

Ash, too.

(Seems they're being arrested, to the surprise of everyone except maybe Ash.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh.

Yeah, in retrospect that was way too much noise for this not to happen.

Permalink Mark Unread

From the angry cussing, sounds like both the weird cat people are being arrested too.

Permalink Mark Unread

They deserve it, though.

Who just shoots at a person, honestly. Disrespectful.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're pretty likely to get charged accordingly, at least. Though Ash is going to be in the jail for a bit before she gets to argue her case in court...

Permalink Mark Unread

Argue her case in court, yeah, funny joke. The last thing the Nova will want is to be reminded of this once they've cleaned it up. Ash is either going to have to break out of the transport or whatever prison they dump her in.

Permalink Mark Unread

The transport is pretty high security!

Permalink Mark Unread

...And contains some unpleasantly familiar faces.

Permalink Mark Unread

Including a muzzled Totally Normal House Cat (who's very grouchy about this).

Permalink Mark Unread

And her erstwhile thief. (Who was the last one holding the orb before they got arrested.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yyyeah not going to get into whatever is going on with that weirdass cat gang. Ash has more important things to worry about right now. She can get revenge when she's rich.

"Hey. Thief girl. Where is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grumpily: "Wherever they put prisoners' belongings."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They keep them on site," says the weirdass cat who isn't muzzled. "Because they're lazy idiots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Done this before, have you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I," she says, grandly, "Have broken out of over three dozen prisons - in the Empire alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You get caught that often?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Mrrr.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snrk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You got caught right alongside us, missy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow, quiet smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh what, like getting arrested was part of your master plan? Bullshit."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I'm not staying here for long, either. And the orb is more secure than it was." Light shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, about that. How'd you find out I had it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She considers for a moment before pretty clearly deciding 'fuck it.' "I was sent to stake out potential buyers - I know Tivan's interested. It's not too hard to figure out who his middlemen are." (It's insanely hard to untangle the high value trade network; the Ravagers have tried and failed to cut out middle men before, and the Tivan Group keep that information on tight lockdown.)

"And you matched the height and gait of the person who took it from the temple, and the timing was right if you came straight to unload it, given what I could tell from recordings of your ship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you're just a stalker."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I prefer 'intelligence agent.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Professional creep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And good at what I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really shouldn't sound so proud of yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially for a lackey of Ronan."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her expression turns more serious. "I don't work for him anymore."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Easy to say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want proof?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What I want," she says, "is my orb."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just so you can sell it to Tivan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Obviously."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a weapon of some kind. I don't know I want it in the hands of the Tivan Group."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Feel free to outbid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How much did Tivan bid?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Four billion."

Permalink Mark Unread

The weird cat does a spit take!

"Four fucking billion?!?? What the actual fuck did you steal?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The thief girl has the expression of someone doing a lot of math very quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something small enough to get away with if someone hadn't started shooting people."

Permalink Mark Unread

She finishes doing her math. "You'd already been caught. And, also, Tivan is dramatically underbidding."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't run faster than I do. And again, unless you want to offer more..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on if the person paying Ronan to fetch that orb thinks to lock me out of the bank accounts before the next time I'm at a terminal."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Ronan can be bought?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where do you think he's getting the funding for his army?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Okay point.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like a bit of a long shot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyways... I have a new idea." To Ash: "Me and Chewie break you out - and tell you who's posting bounties on you - and you give us a cut of your sale."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pleasure doing business." She leans back. "My name's Rocket. This here's Chewie." She nods to the muzzled Perfectly Normal House Cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call me Ash."

"So what's with the uh, talking and tentacles? Respectively."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I learned to talk as a kid, same as most people," she says with a shrug. "Chewie here's a flerken - we don't think I'm one even though I look like it, they've got these extradimensional stomachs and mine's just normal. The tentacles are how flerken hunt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Freaky."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most people are terrified of them," she says, smugly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I can see why."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Chewie's going to be our ticket out of here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are they going to eat the walls?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "No - remember those extradimensional stomachs? We've got supplies stored in them, enough to rip a hole in any prison you could name. They'll take these stupid shackles off once they release us into the general prison population - and then I'll pop that muzzle off Chewie, and we'll be sailing on out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. That's... kinda clever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll learn not to underestimate us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"After your plan works out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So pretty soon." She leans back, rolling her shoulders to stretch as much as the shackles will let her. "Now we just need to wait to get there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Waiting's a lot more bearable when you have a plan for how to end it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket's feeling confident enough for a little cat nap -

At least until the rude awakening that is their arrival to the Kyln. Being striped and washed down and forced into stupid prisoner clothes: very uncool.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora is quiet and withdrawn throughout the process.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, orange isn't her color.

Ash does want to make sure to note where Gamora's possessions get stored.

Permalink Mark Unread

With everyone else's, it seems like - which means taken away from them, presumably to a storage area out of sight.

Permalink Mark Unread

All right, just have to hit that on the way out then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shouldn't be too hard, once 'the way out' is secure.

Permalink Mark Unread

And speaking of...

The odd thief girl steps next to Ash just before they're pushed out into the main prison area. "I can keep Ronan - and worse - off your back," she says, quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I fuckin' bet. If what you want is to hitch a ride, say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to 'hitch a ride,' then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd better find something worth our time, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Helping you avoid Ronan isn't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can do that on my own, thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Then we'll see what I find."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess we will."

Permalink Mark Unread

And they're pushed out into the common area -

- Where it pretty quickly turns out the thief girl's name is 'Gamora,' and very nearly everyone here not only recognizes but fucking hates her.

Some highlights, in amidst the things being thrown at her:

"Murderer!"

"You first! I'm coming for you first!"

"Hey you fucking cunt - "

"You're gonna pay - "

"Psycho bitch - "

"You're dead!"

Mostly, of course, from people not standing within striking range of her - people on the lowest level with them seem to still be working up their nerve - but the crowds in the upper walkways have pretty quickly gone from 'fear' to 'bluster,' and there's a lot of threatening gestures even in the crowd around them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah Rocket and Chewie are going to very quickly stop standing anywhere near her. She's not eager to get associated with a fucking genocidal maniac, even though the blustering idiots here don't scare her.

Anyways, time to find a quiet corner to poke the lock on Chewie's muzzle... And Gamora's arrival to the floor is a pretty good distraction for some light thievery of things that might be useful later...

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep, seems like that particular problem is about to solve itself.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Except the annoyed curses coming out of Rocket's mouth might suggest a minor roadblock or two to their plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Problems?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is a fancier lock than I've ever seen them pull - it's electronic, but I can't just short it with what I've got, the shielding is too good - and it'll shock Chewie if I just cut it off. And I'm pretty sure it's got a basic AI, it'll adapt to what I'm doing if I don't work fast enough once I start."

"I can get through this, but we'll need supplies. And probably time." (She hopes.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Fuck.

"Guess we settle in, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For now..." She's going to need to start figuring out what she even needs first, how to get it second...

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile:

Gamora settles into her cell - unfortunately solitary, if she'd been placed with the other women she just knows she could've pulled in allies -

And she waits, because there's not much she can do here, not with the crowd disrupting anything but the most fleeting manipulation - she can look proud, and severe, and pretty, and quietly fascinating, and no match for the ones who want to tear her apart, and not the one who'll be to blame for the oncoming match -

Not much she can do, but Gamora is good at people. And her hearing is better than she's let anyone know.

(She knows Rocket can't get them out, not without help. She knows she's decent at electronics. She bets she can find someone better; this prison is designed to be hard to just hack your way out of, to subvert, which means it'll be used to hold anyone who's at risk of doing just that...)

Not much time passes, before curfew is called. Not much after that, before the door to her cell opens, and a small crowd press in with knives and the turned backs of guards and a wry, idle, "Take her to the showers. It'll be easier to clean up the blood," from the uniformed man who opened her cell, whose back is to the men dragging her out.

She struggles, but only manages to make some noise. Enough that anyone awake and paying attention will notice what's happening. Not enough to escape.

(They have knives, if she can get them off balance, if she can get one in her hand - if she can delay them, turn them against each other -)

Her chances aren't very good, though. Not alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excuse me." The voice of the intruder that interrupts is calm, unhurried. "What is going on here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bit of justice," says the man holding Gamora's right arm.

"This murdering cunt earned herself a death sentence," says the one holding her left.

"And if you want a place in the peanut gallery, you stand in the back," says a third, sharply, who's hanging back to watch and help if Gamora tries to break free. He's got a knife clutched tightly in his left hand, his yellow skin turning white around the knuckles. "If not - then this doesn't concern you."

(There's a small crowd gathered, thirtsy for blood - they've cut down on the ones who just want a show, restricted it to people who want revenge. But that's still a lot of people.)

(Gamora looks an angry, determined kind of scared.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"This does not seem like justice. It seems like mob violence. I do not think I can permit you to continue."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mind your own business, bitch," says the one standing guard. (Gamora looks like she'd like some help, actually.)

Permalink Mark Unread

In lieu of answering, she grabs his knife hand and strikes with her other fist at his joints- wrist elbow shoulder- ducks underneath his now upraised arm, levers him off his feet and throws him with startling accuracy at guard on Gamora's right side.

Permalink Mark Unread

She twists to the left as the prisoner on her right flinches - the one on her left turns his attention to the new threat - she gets her arm free in the chaos and punches him in the stomach, then grabs his knife off his belt while he's reeling, slashes at his throat - makes contact, though the wound is shallow enough he might live with treatment, but bleeding enough he now has much bigger problems than holding her down.

There's a lot of other prisoners in this room, though, and they're now pissed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Angry fighters make mistakes. 2B does not make mistakes, she exploits them. With ruthless precision.

(Though she is not actually aiming for killing blows. Given the demonstrated level of medical technology, the damage she deals is survivable. If for whatever reason these prisoners do not receive medical assistance... that is neither her fault nor her problem.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Her rescuee takes down a few of her own - she's got a pretty similar ruthless precision, but far less talent. Hits weaker and slower, and wouldn't be able to afford not going for killing blows, even if she could pull that balance off. (Most of her cuts with her stolen knife are survivable, but that's more a comment on the quality of  the knife than on her own intentions.)

They (mostly 2B) clear the room pretty quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not breathing hard at all. It's hard to tell she was a blur of violent movement seconds ago.

"Are you unharmed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just bruises. They'll heal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Then we should leave."

Permalink Mark Unread

She couldn't agree more. "Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora's rescuer does so, but not back to her cell. Rather, they seem to be heading towards a more sparsely-populated wing of the prison.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something she approves of.

And speaking of things she approves of: "Thank you for the assistance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile. "You fight very efficiently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is my purpose."

"I am surprised you were not more prepared for tonight's event, given your reputation."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had other plans in motion - you're far beyond my best case, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps you would end up in less trouble to begin with if you increased your standards."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I think you're right." Wink. "Maybe now I won't settle for anyone less than you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am, approximately, unique in this world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I'll have to find out how to recruit you long term."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If our goals align."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And what are yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...A secret. For now."

"My partner will have some questions for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I might even have some answers." How close are they to this partner?

Permalink Mark Unread

Fairly. They get to a bulkhead door, which she knocks on.

Permalink Mark Unread

At her knock, it opens!

"Ah, 2B, welcome back. And this must be Gamora?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The one and only - and what should I call you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can call me Nines!" she chirps.

Permalink Mark Unread

"9S," 2B corrects.

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems amused. "Your partner rescued me just now - and she said you'd have some questions for me, Nines."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yes. Do come in." She steps aside to let them in.

These rooms are much more nicely furnished than the rest of the prison, with what looks like the same furniture the guards enjoy in the non-secured sections of the prison.

Permalink Mark Unread

She raises an eyebrow. "You two have done well for yourselves - at least, given you're still here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, well, it's a lot easier to get stuff in than out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "What questions did you have for me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mostly about your, ah, employers. I've been able to piece together a decent picture of what's going on in the galaxy by hacking the prison's data connections, but people like Ronan don't exactly spend a lot of time on social media."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Seems today is her very lucky day.)

"I've defected, so that isn't the kind of information I'll prioritize keeping secret anymore - but some answers might not be free. Unless, of course, you having that information would advance my own goals, and your partner has earned you two a lot of good will."

"And, a freebie for you - we likely have at least thirteen more hours until Ronan figures out I've defected, figures out where I went, and then arrives at this facility to seek me out - and slaughter anyone not relevant to his search. And I have a fairly fast way out of here lined up, but it requires better hacking skills than I have myself."

Permalink Mark Unread
"Oh, a time limit. I love those. Well then. Let me show you what I've got and what gaps I'm hoping you'll fill in."

Nines has apparently managed to hack a projector screen out of a pane of glass and a set of lightbulbs, hooked into the station wiring at a wall panel that looks like it was torn off by hand. On this she displays a remarkably accurate chart of the great currents of politics in the galaxy at large. What she needs is for Gamora to flesh out Ronan's motives and recent activities, hopefully in such a way that she can draw a connection to the unseen attractor she suspects is distorting the picture, which she doesn't have much at all on. Just a small box with a two words and a question mark:

Infinity Stones?

(There are a couple more lines leading away from this- Asgard, Nine Realms, Hela Disappearance??, Dark Elves.)

She examines this chart very intensely.

"What do you plan to do with this information?" she asks, something far more - present, almost, about how she's holding herself. Like she hadn't been taking the two - possibly the overall situation - entirely seriously before. Like she's realized it's time for the kid gloves to come off, or time for her to actually engage fully with what's happening.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Save the world," 2B says, "if that proves to be required."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It will be."

"The distortion you're seeing has a name - Thanos. And the connection to Ronan is that he is bankrolling Ronan's entire operation. Thanos is searching for the Infinity Stones, among other weapons."

"And Thanos was my true... 'Employer' as well. Not Ronan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see." 9S starts filling in the information. "Do you know more about the Infinity Stones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Not as much as I'd like - but enough to realize that anyone who possesses one is automatically a threat to everyone around them. And anyone who possesses more than one is a threat to the universe."

"To start... There's six, each named for what they affect or control. Time, Space, Reality, Power, Mind, and Soul."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's an... odd... breakdown."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?" (It seems pretty straightforward to her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do Time and Space differ from Reality? What sets the Power stone apart from the others? What separates Mind from Soul, and why are they on the same level as the others?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Second one is simplest, because we honestly don't really know - the records are patchy at best, and the Power stone is... Inert, in a way the others aren't. All of the other five have been known to act on their own sometimes - Time, Space, and Reality generally fairly basically, but Soul exhibits at least an animal level of intelligence, and the Mind stone is generally suspected to be sapient. The Power stone though just - sits there, unless someone tries to use it, at which point they inevitably cause a massive and undirected explosion and the stone usually then vanishes from the records for a few centuries. The Power stone is also considered the hardest to identify for that reason."

"Thanos thinks it's required to use the other stones to their full potential. I'm... Doubtful that that's all it does."

"Time and Space are different from Reality because Reality covers the more fundamental - way the world works. Magic especially. Space lets you move things around at the most basic, and be in multiple locations at once if you have better control of it - it's one of the better understood stones since it's more active than most. Time is... Difficult to find, since it moves itself around in the timeline, and not much is known about it beyond that it enables time travel."

"Mind and Soul are - fundamentally different things, and they're also basic properties a thing can have. You don't need to have one to have the other - we're not entirely sure how things acquire souls, I think figuring that out would require some very unethical" but fascinating "experiments with the Soul stone, but we know roughly how minds emerge. Minds are... Very simply, anything mind magic works on, anything that reacts with intelligence to its environment and has memory. Simple computers are the most common things with minds but not souls - computers can definitely have souls, but I don't know why some do and some don't. And people who are brain dead usually have a soul, but don't have a mind."

" - Those six are also fairly fundamental divisions in magic, though there's usually some obfuscation built on top of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. Not quite the way I'm used to thinking about things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're unpredictable and extremely impactful - honestly, no one should have that power. It shouldn't exist." She does not like things she can't control, and she isn't stupid enough to think she can control the Infinity Stones. "But Thanos especially shouldn't have it, and - he's trying to seize all six."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like destroying them to keep them out of his hands isn't so much of an option."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we cut off his hands."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins. "A good idea."

"There might be ways to neutralize them without destroying them - but I'm fully in favor of taking Thanos out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll just mark that one down as 'long term', shall I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though I'll keep my eyes open for opportunities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to get out of here first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a way for that lined up, fortunately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You mentioned. Something that needs hacking skills?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The group I arrived with - I overheard their escape plans, and I'm fairly certain they can pull it off. One of them is a flerken, who has useful tools stored in their extradimensional stomachs - and they and their usual partner have escaped from tougher prisons that way. Their only problem is the Nova have wised up, and put a muzzle on the flerken with an electronic lock that's beyond their partner's abilities. They could probably get it off eventually... But not before Ronan gets here, though I haven't told them about that deadline yet."

"They don't particularly like me - but we can leverage getting the muzzle off the flerken into a ride out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can they be trusted?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I don't know yet."

"They're at least motivated by profit, and will put aside personal enmity for money. I'm unsure about other motives."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Common criminals, then," she says, with a hint of disdain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fond smile. "I can't discount them wanting that profit for specific ends, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we can find out!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have a bit of fun while we're plotting our escape?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A working mind is a healthy mind."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "Just don't get us into trouble again, 9S."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You get into trouble often?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are currently in prison."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How'd you end up here, speaking of?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"An amusing series of misunderstandings!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was not very funny at the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was a little bit funny."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries very hard not to laugh.

Still... "I did end up here on purpose - this was the best way to give me some breathing room and get ahead of Ronan. And... Of the ones I got arrested with - the human girl, Ash, has a strange orb that Thanos was willing to bankroll Ronan to get. She's tough to steal from, and only willing to part with it for a higher bid than Tivan's - it was easier to get us both thrown in here, and therefore both out of Ronan's reach for a time. And the Nova store prisoners' belongings in the same facility as those prisoners."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A curious security flaw."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exploitable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very much so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go get started, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Over to where Ash and the cat gang have holed up, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Don't these people know it's the middle of the damn night?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, but need to get out of here before Ronan comes looking. And you're the one with the ship and the escape experts - and we're the ones with the key to that little muzzle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, really? Hey, Rocket, wake up."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks... almost familiar, somehow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kind of, if you squint...

9S sends out a quick ping, just in case. Nope, still only two black box signals. "Not her," she whispers to 2B.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're sure? But..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know. But this is someone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

She raises a faint eyebrow at them.

Permalink Mark Unread

- But Rocket wakes up, preventing any tangents. "Ash?" she mumbles. "Whazzup?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Chewie shifts a bit but goes back to sleep with a tiny 'mrr.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thief Girl's back. Says she found a key to Chewie's muzzle. Probably her new friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What - really - "

She bounces to her feet. "Chewie! Time to look lively!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grumble grumble mrr.

They turn over enough that 9S can access the important parts of the muzzle for hacking.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come on, we haven't got all night - "

This is probably directed at 9S and 2B.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, yeah, keep your tail on."

9S will go poke the sophisticated electronic lock attached to the dangerous predator beast. So far she's seen some tricks from the local programmers, but nothing she'd consider actively dangerous, really, so she's pretty confident.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is a lot more sophisticated than anything she's seen so far!

...And they also still haven't invented the attack barrier. The difficulty comes as much from the programming logic being incredibly alien as much as anything, really, which just means it's a puzzle she can keep working at until she cracks it. (It's learning her patterns and real-time reinforcing itself - definitely stronger on the defense than machine lifeforms ever managed - but as long as her own analysis keeps up with it she's golden. And it isn't networked at all, so no chances of hints for it from other Nova systems she's broken into.)

(She gets the sense that this was built a lot more recently than the prison, which hasn't been fully overhauled in years, just getting minor - and floundering - updates to its software.)

Permalink Mark Unread

An enjoyable challenge. But in the end, a surmountable one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chewie cracks their jaw and licks their lips (revealing a brief glance of the Oh Hell No seething down their throat) in triumph when the muzzle finally comes off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hah! Now we're talking!" The bipedal cat punches the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talking about what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Getting out of this joint!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aha. Do you need any more help with that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could use some, and I'll need anyone coming along to stick by me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll start retrieving objects from Chewie's stomachs - a pretty disgusting process - and go over her plan.

It's pretty simple: get into the central control tower, and stall until she finishes hotwiring it. From there, she'll be able to seize control of the entire facility - including selectively turning off the artificial gravity, and controlling the doors. It'll also give her a map to where their stuff is stored.

Permalink Mark Unread

Practical and workable.

Permalink Mark Unread

And fun!

Permalink Mark Unread

Fun is a secondary objective. At best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nah she's pretty sure it's up there in the primaries.

Permalink Mark Unread

...2B is not filled with confidence about the success of this plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's broken out of worse prisons, it'll be fine!

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course it will! 9S believes in the plan!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like you," she informs 9S, smugly. " - What's your name. I'm Rocket."

Permalink Mark Unread

"9S", she says. "Good to meet you, Rocket."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You got a real name? I ain't using some fucking - serial number."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can call me Nines, if you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

Not very creative, but neither were Floor nor Teefs, so she doesn't really have the heart to throw stones here. "Nice to meet you then, Nines." She stretches. "Let's get going."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, to work!

Permalink Mark Unread

And chaos!

...It is very difficult to complete any part of Rocket's plan without the entire base trying to kill them. So, better to just assume they're going to be getting extremely shot at, in Rocket's opinion. Luckily Chewie and Ash are extremely talented at dishing out massive amounts of violence - hopefully the newbies can pull their weight there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. She can.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And just wait til we get her swords out of lockup," she whispers to Rocket.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's really good already," Rocket says with clear awe. "Hot damn. Don't think we need to be scared about Ronan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends how much anti-vehicle weaponry he's packing. We're not really armored for that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's got a hammer that can pulp spaceships, and it sends out shockwaves and possibly makes forcefields. Plus he's strong enough to toss a light tank around - that's weird as fuck for a Kree, which means he's some kind of super soldier, and those are a pain in the ass to fight no matter how they're built. And he's got heavy weaponry on his spaceship. But he doesn't have much in between that, far as I can tell from some videos shot by very stupid people - his goons have basically normal weapons. Still, you'd have to be crazy good to take him on in a serious fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'd prefer to tip the scales a little before trying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No firepower like overwhelming firepower," she says, agreeably, and then something clicks in the console she's half buried in the guts of and she gives a little 'ahah!'

"Tell your partner she might wanna get back in here," she says, straightening up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"2B!" she calls. "Time to go!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Understood." She snap-kicks one last guard back down the hallway and retreats into the control room.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she clicks something with a little cackle -

And gravity turns off for everyone but them - then reverses, sharp and hard - then turns off again -

And then she straightens up, and takes the controls she'd also hotwired, and the control room smoothly detaches from its pillar, becoming instead something of a flying tank as a swarm of flying robots are masterminded to hook onto it as ad hoc thrusters.

A flying tank with a lot more momentum than anyone unlucky enough to be in the passages between her and her goal - and doors snap open ahead of them, snap shut to seal off side passages or open certain others -

She passes the controls to Gamora and dives back into the console's guts -

And by the time they're at the lockers with their stuff, she's opened up - gravity-enabled - escape routes for most of the other prisoners, funneling them towards a cloud of emergency escape pods and official ships - her crew will be getting out first, but there's gonna be a rush now, a mass breakout big enough to obscure their trail for a precious few hours -

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora's a better pilot than Rocket, for a value of 'better' than involves not just ricocheting off the walls even if the control room's armor can take it. She's - actually a really damn good pilot, she's also flying faster than Rocket had, navigating the ungainly room through openings with bare millimeters to spare at a speed it's frankly impressive this thing can manage.

By her grin, this is her idea of fun.

She lands them gracefully in a side hallway in easy running range of the lockers - she thinks they can just take this ride all the way to the hangar with Ash's ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, so long as they remember whose ship it is. And who is going to hold onto the prize.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't try to steal the orb while they're all getting to the ship, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe she is capable of learning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Either that or is lying in wait.

"You're planning to head straight to Tivan?" she asks, once they're all aboard with all crew and all belongings accounted for after she finished giving 2B's swords an admiring once over.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The sooner we make the orb his problem, the sooner we'll be rid of Ronan."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums and nods slowly. (...She should try to get 9S and 2B aside. See whether they want to steal the orb from Tivan after the sale, or from Ash before - and if they're even still on her side here now that their freedom is more secured.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless you've got another brilliant fucking idea to throw a wrench in everyone's plans again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny smile. "I still don't want that orb in Tivan's hands - though it does depend on exactly what it is. If it's a relatively minor piece... Tivan's been left in place even with something major in his hands. But if it isn't - "

"Well, he's the type to explain things at inadvisable lengths, so he just might tell you what it is. And I'm thinking he might be easier to steal from than you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn straight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can avoid any theft getting traced back to me as one of your companions, too, so the heat doesn't end up falling on you over it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd appreciate that. Otherwise I might have to help Rocket claim your bounty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think even you'd have trouble with that now." She's keeping 2B and Nines. Even if they maybe haven't been informed of this yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good thing you won't make us find out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No such plans, don't worry - I'd prefer a working relationship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we'll see."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anything else for right now?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ash doesn't need her help to fly her own ship, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll go find 2B and Nines, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

In the hold, checking over their weapons.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're very nice weapons. "Everything as expected?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, fortunately."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good."

"They don't seem to be regular swords..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They are not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're actually highly advanced nanotech polymer constructs. That resemble swords from a distance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They do look much cooler than a normal sword."

"What can they do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, for example..." She tosses her sword casually across the room. Halfway through its arc, it dissolves into shimmering particles. A second and a half later, it reforms in her hand again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has questions about how that works! (Including on if the technology is similar to Asgard's weapons technology.)

Permalink Mark Unread

9S doesn't know much about Asgard weapons technology.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately Gamora does! (...A lot more than is accessible from outside Asgard; they keep that data mostly on isolated servers.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, fascinating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora is extremely both an engineering nerd and a weapon nerd. (Mostly for swords, but she knows a lot in general.)

Permalink Mark Unread

This should be a productive conversation, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least get a good start.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is much yet to learn about this world.

Permalink Mark Unread

And much that even Gamora doesn't know.

Though speaking of... What world are 2B and Nines from?

Permalink Mark Unread

A vastly different one than this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most worlds are fairly different from each other... But if you're thinking of this as all one world - was yours uncontacted?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not... exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfriendly contact."

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a face. "Unfortunately all too common - most of the civilizations making contact are the - aggressive ones."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We killed most of them. Eventually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Winning that kind of war is better than losing - but it's unfortunate you had to fight it in the first place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure I would call it winning, either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A long war. That killed everyone but the proxies, and most of those as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah," she says.

Then, quietly: "My planet had - a violent first contact too. ...I'm pretty sure I'm the last survivor, from the 'invaded' side."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It was a long time ago."

"But - thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Although, aside from the question of our original terrestrial world, I think there may have been a slight miscommunication. When 2B said we were from a vastly different world, a better term might have been universe, or dimension."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh - do you know which one? - There's a couple of different designation systems but I'm familiar with most of those, so whichever designation works..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've not been able to identify it, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you be interested in finding out? - Or going back?" ...Might complicate keeping them, since Gamora doesn't currently have any easy ways to move between universes...

Permalink Mark Unread

"At some point, yes. But the problems currently in front of us seem more urgent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad to have your help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is a worthy endeavor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you're worthy companions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We appreciate that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Even once this is settled - I'd like to keep working with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Making big plans for after already?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm an ambitious woman."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you two would be excellent prizes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure that's exactly the word you want to use."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What word would you prefer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Allies. Companions, perhaps."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Companions, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we can live with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For a long time to come, I hope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For the foreseeable future."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good start."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One step at a time, we proceed."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs a little. "We do."

"We've got a lot to manage with this mess - but I'm now looking forward to after."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as you are not too distracted, that is good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be careful to stay focused."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is the fate of the universe, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The task before us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not something to give anything less than our best to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any plans we should start working on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

A few...

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, a thief is giving a cat a hard time. "Three dozen prisons, really? How did you ever find time to do anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I," she says, grandly, "Escape quickly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The cops must have been practically queuing up, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To get mowed down."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh. "As they deserve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm very good at dealing out just deserts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do they usually pop you for? Illegal bounty hunting?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That, and wire fraud, arson, larceny, burglary, assault and battery, lese-majesty, murder... And vandalism."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Vandalism?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Dramatic sigh. "I carved my name into one moon..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At what fuckin' font size?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "Readable from the planet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn," she chuckles. "That's pretty impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There were some high powered lasers - and a lot of evasive maneuvers - involved."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Were you doing cursive or did they start chasing halfway through?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Smugly: "Both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You ever done anything that cool?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Man, I knock over, fucking, freighters for a living. The occasional luxury liner whose captain is too drunk to watch the nav charts. The biggest thing is probably... once we took over a city for like, a week."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, how big a city? And what do you mean 'took over'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno, like five hundred thousand people or something? Some shitty little backwater was having some dumbass succession dispute. One of the guys involved used to run with the Ravagers, so he called us in. We blasted a couple picket boats, stormed the governor's mansion, did martial law, curfews, the whole bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And got kicked out after a week?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The guy ran out of money. Everyone else running the place was just as corrupt as him and had already siphoned everything out of the treasury."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Pretty damn bad at planning, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yyyyep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably would've been cheaper just to assassinate all his competition. Or go set up somewhere else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, too stubborn and proud to be that smart."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You got paid, at least?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, he fronted the week's worth in advance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"His mistake, your payday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the best way around for those things to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's what we work for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Easy cash and dumb bosses?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or large payouts and easy marks, in this case." She's not sure she'd call this sale 'easy cash,' though it's definitely got an impressive effort versus reward ratio.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enormous payouts."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Payouts big enough to pay to have our names carved in sacred moons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could start a collection of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though paying to have your name carved into a moon legitimately removes some of the point... I'm an asshole, and I want to be rich, but I'm not a rich asshole kind of person, you know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, I get it. Some people let the money go to their head."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And not in the fun ways!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tragic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know! We'll have to make sure we stay fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shouldn't be too hard, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just will require paying a little attention."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And not paying someone else to pay attention."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even if it's really tempting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's gotta be better shit to buy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keeping our priorities straight will be one of the things to make sure we do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

"Hey, what's the first thing you're going to get?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmm tough question!

She thinks about this, then: "My own ship - something fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good choice. Can't do much if you can't go anywhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I want to go places in style."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Got a paint job picked out already, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some ideas - I'll need to tweak based on the exact lines of the ship... I'm thinking something cheerful, though. With rainbows and glitter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The shiniest thing in space?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the most colorful!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not bad, not bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll even be gracious and let you take a few rides."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like fun, Rocket."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It will be!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm thinking I'll get new swords first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good idea - fancier ones?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bigger ones."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yyyyep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've got some damn good swords already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One can never have enough swords."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely! Meant you have taste."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though from what I've seen, you have more guns."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Each one's a unique work of art. And my expertise there is how I know you have quality weapons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though we'll have to have the money first... How long until we get there, speaking of?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shit, not too much longer. I should get back to the controls."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh.

She'll let Ash do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not that this should be a tricky bit of flying or anything, but yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket can be pretty distracting when she wants to be!

Permalink Mark Unread

Docking with the derelict husk of a long-dead giant's skull where there's not local traffic control to speak of isn't the best time to want that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fiiine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ash muscles a couple competing ships out of the way and secures a berth for the ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora comes up when it looks like they're about to dock. And, once they're settled: "Are you planning to go alone with Rocket and Chewie to do the trade?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why, you want to come along and see who you're going to be robbing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Getting a lay of the place will be useful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as you're not going to fuck things up, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not while you're standing there; and I don't intend to let Tivan know who's robbing him later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fine, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

All six of them, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Onwards, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to go get fucking paid.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately, first they're going to have to wait to be called in to Tivan's office - he doesn't see just anyone who comes in, especially not right away. (Knowhere has plenty of entertainment while they cool their heels, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Might as well get a drink.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a pretty wide spread of options. Is she in the mood for rowdy or quiet?

Permalink Mark Unread

Let's get loud.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she can definitely have loud - loud enough even Tivan's servant girl will have to raise her voice when she comes to fetch the visitors. (She's creepily poised, hands together in front of her, posture ramrod straight, voice light and high and flat.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Weird, but some people are like that. Probably some sort of fuckery Tivan expects from his servants; typically of that kind of rich bastard.

Permalink Mark Unread

The room the servant leads their group into is enormous, a broad space under a translucent glass dome, though they can't see the far walls - it's full of cages and display cases containing plants and animals and objects and a few scattered humanoids. Most of them Ash has zero familiarity with, but some - some are definitely sapient, just members of exceptionally rare peoples.

One of them is from the same species as the girl leading them, and looks pretty similar - another girl of a similar height and build with facial features that'd make Ash suspect they were sisters if they were human. The caged girl looks deeply miserable.

"We house the galaxy's largest collection of relics, flora, and fauna of all manner," the girl leading them says in that same creepy tone. She comes to a dais near the entrance, then turns and bows grandly. "I present to you Taneleer Tivan, the Collector." There's a man with white hair on the dais, past a raised table, who turns towards the as she announces him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Collector." Ash reaches into her pouch to pull out the silvery orb. "I heard you were in the market for this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Marvelous," he says, removing his spectacles. "Come here, let me see it more closely, my lovely friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

What a fucking creep. Rich creep, though, so she does get closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

He gestures for her to place the orb in an instrument on the table. "Let's see what we have..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something worth a hell of a lot of money."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More than than..." he murmurs as the instrument hums to life, holding the orb suspended - and slowly unscrewing it, pulling the two halves apart to reveal something brilliantly glowing within. "This... This is unique. One of a set of only six, out of anywhere in the universe."

Permalink Mark Unread

Damn, that thing is pretty shiny.

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the beginning," he says, rather dramatically, "Even before the beginning of the universe - there were six singularities. And when the universe exploded into being, the Celestials forged their dying hearts into six gems. Six stones, each holding a barely contained infinity in them. Their power is beyond imagining..." He gestures, and holographic displays float into being, some of the brilliant purple light from the gem enveloping and swaddling them. They show a purple light enveloping a planet in catastrophe, a group of powerful men with cracks spreading across their skin as they try in vain to hold its power, a weapon in the hand of a collosus wielded to slaughter even greater enemies... More, a hundred miniature snapshots of times the Power Stone has been activated, always to devastating effect.

It's notably all information that neither 9S nor Gamora could find on the Infinity Stones.

Tivan shivers in delight. "Isn't it marvelous? Isn't it beyond compare?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like four billion units."

Permalink Mark Unread

He sighs. "Yes, yes. How do you want the money transferred?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She will provide account details.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he'll step away from the dais to handle that himself.

- And his servant girl slowly, cautiously steps towards the still exposed Infinity Stone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm. Understandable, but incautious.

Problem: how to avert this action without rousing the notice of Tivan, who might take revenge on the girl...

Permalink Mark Unread

Too late! Tivan can apparently notice even someone moving very slowly and quietly when his back is turned, because he turns, sharply, and calls out "Carina" in a warning tone -

Too late as well, because she lunges the rest of the way, hand clasping around the Power Stone, and as cracks build on her skin and the air fills with a heavy sensation like being inside a struck bell, she screams through gritted teeth: "I will not be your slave!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah. Not good.

She tackles Gamora down behind cover.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, good idea, everyone down-

Permalink Mark Unread

Hey get off, what in the fuck-

Permalink Mark Unread

Chewie's tentacles lash out, grabbing Rocket - and a few loose objects of interest as enormous bolts of power lash out, destroying cages and displays - and Chewie doesn't get under cover or flee, even as the pressure builds and builds and builds and threatens to explode -

Chewie grabs the girl, Carina, and grabs the Power Stone too, wrenching them apart, releasing a massive shockwave of violet light -

A malshapen one, though. The lightest part of the shockwave rolls nearly harmlessly over their allies' hiding place; the heaviest blasts Tivan out of sight and rips in a jagged wave through his security system.

And then Chewie shoves both Stone and girl down their gullet, too -

Permalink Mark Unread

- And the explosion's source cuts out. Chewie licks their lips -

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the tentacles come out again, depositing a slightly slimy but totally safe Rocket back out in normal space.

Chewie grabs a few more things, too, while they're at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - What the everlasting actual fuck was that?!?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"An Infinity Stone. Like the man said."

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns to look at Chewie. "Nice save. - Did that fucker finish transfering our money?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Don't mind Chewie they're just looting while the security system is down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me check..."

Permalink Mark Unread

...You know what? Fuck it.

"Nines," she says, "Tivan might also have the Reality Stone here - can you find out where?"

They're going to have to move fast to escape from this with their lives. But you can't get ahead without a bit of risk.

Permalink Mark Unread

(The computer, miraculously enough, is still working - it's a pretty simple model under all the fancy casing; probably rad-hard and then some, given where it's situated. Even Ash's ship's computer hadn't been too happy about navigating inside a Celestial's head.)

(And it looks like Tivan did, in fact, finish paying them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing." Hardened means more difficult to hack remotely, but she's got physical access so it doesn't even matter.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ha! Yes, we got our money."

Permalink Mark Unread

The Reality Stone: in a vault! One even in the same building. This computer system is sensibly designed, so Nines can't just open all the doors and disable all the security from here, given the systems don't interact at all; however she's also pretty sure that most of the doors and security have been recently exploded, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's here. Are you going to feed it to the flerken too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're supposed to be unsafe to store together..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Chewie's dimensions ain't all adjacent." She tilts her head, listening. "And they say they had to shove the Stone into a pretty remote set. It's pretty much inert now but it's still giving them indigestion, so they're gonna have to cough it up eventually. They could keep two but it'd reduce the transport time, and also suck. And other flerkens might notice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can we reuse the container the Power stone was in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Reality Stone is supposed to take a different shape - it's more... Liquid, or gaseous. And more aggressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tivan might have a safe container set up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should check."

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket will grab the Power Stone's empty casing. "Might wanna store the Power Stone in this if we can get it back in. It'll be easier on Chewie."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ugh, guess they're doing this shit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's grab the Reality Stone and get out of here, first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan."

To the vault!

Permalink Mark Unread

- Except their trip over is interrupted by the sounds of arriving ships, and of powerful canons being fired - by distant explosions -

Permalink Mark Unread

"The fuck's happening now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The problem with the network being fried is that it's really hard to figure that out - until the problem comes to them, in nightmarishly familiar ship silhouettes racing overhead, visible through the shattered dome ceiling.

Ronan's ships.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not that Ash recognizes those.

Permalink Mark Unread

2B and 9S do.

"Ronan has caught up. I suggest we get to the ship."

Permalink Mark Unread

She curses. "I don't want to leave the Reality Stone where he can get it - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"It will be worse if he catches us with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fuck.

And maybe he won't find it - Ronan isn't exactly known for being thorough at anything other than slaughter.

"...Alright. Let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, Ash is in favor of Plan Don't Get Murderized By A Fucking Army What The Fuck.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll have to move quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

- A plan mildly interrupted by Chewie retching a little, though they don't start vomiting just yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh hell.

"Rocket, can you get Chewie to cough it up back into the container-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They don't got the best aim - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well at least fuckin try because I don't want to have to scrape it up off the floor!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries to prop the opened orb in front of Chewie? No way she's putting her hands near potential projectile explosive vomit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully that works.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope!

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah fuck. She doesn't really want to get close to it...

Permalink Mark Unread

No need. A faint yellowish circle envelops each half of the containment orb and manipulates them into scooping up the stone and then snapping shut. 2B then plucks it out of the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nice trick," she says. "Now let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, 2B is also perfectly capable of running. Faster than Rocket is, in fact, though she will not demonstrate this because there are other members of the group to consider.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she's strong enough to run and carry the slower members, that's what they should do.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the two cats are significantly faster than Ash or Gamora; they aren't the ones holding up the group.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Ash doesn't mind...

Permalink Mark Unread

She most certainly fucking does, but she minds dying more, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough. Hup!

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Then 2B will take Gamora.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not an arrangement she objects to.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Chewie and Rocket will each pick one of 9S or 2B to jump on the shoulder of.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then, they run.

Their basic pace is as fast as anyone else's sprint, and they have no trouble at all flowing around and through obstacles at that speed. If anything, they get faster when something needs to be dodged.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most impressive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though not impressive enough to get them to safety before the streets are filling with Ronan's armored, anonymous soldiers - mostly mercenaries, supplemented by an elite core of fanatics. Soldiers they're going to have to go through.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm. She will need both hands for this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora takes out her knives as 2B sets her down.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Chewie jumps to the ground, a low growl building in their chest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket just stands on 9S's shoulder and opens fire from where she is.

Permalink Mark Unread

And 2B starts clearing a path.

Permalink Mark Unread

- And other ships approach their position -

Permalink Mark Unread

Do these ships perhaps have electronic control systems linked to active sensors? If yes, 9S has some bad news for these ships.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can definitely cause so much bad news! Of course, exactly how much depends on how much damage she feels like causing to random bystanders.

Permalink Mark Unread

9S is under the impression that the locals are not exactly the most upstanding of galactic citizens. Still, she tries to make most of the crashes and explosions happen in the midst of the invading army.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's able to finesse that, more or less! And set off some very impressive fireballs!

...One of which sends out the expected debris, but also someone big, blue, and surprisingly not dead plummeting to the ground.

He lands on his feet, a hammer with a head the size of 9S's torso in his hand. He doesn't look particularly the worst for wear for having been on an exploding ship.

Instead, he looks somewhat intense, almost angry, and definitely way too close for comfort as he straightens up and begins to stalk towards them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well shit.

How's that running away looking?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a much clearer path back to the ship than there had been, and 9S and 2B could maybe just dodge through it. And Ronan's currently stalking, not running or charging. Still, his determined stalk is about as fast as a human's panicked run.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which means that if they start running he'll start running and likely catch up-

Permalink Mark Unread

A distraction is required.

"Go," she says to the others, and steps into Ronan's path, sword drawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fuck fuck fuck.

"...Fuck it," she says, quietly.

And then she's stepping up beside 2B - and spreading her hands, golden light bursting into her palms and racing like lightning along her skin. She thrusts her hands towards Ronan - and that lightning fills the space between them with a scream that shakes the entire station.

And then she moves one of her glowing hands in a circle, and a glowing portal opens under 9S, Ash, Rocket, and Chewie, depositing them unceremoniously on the ship.

- And then Ronan charges, his skin badly charred by the lightning, but not yet dead, and he'll be on them in a moment -

Gamora makes a sharp gesture, and 2B is knocked through the portal right before it snaps closed, as her ability to hold a portal open inside the head of a Celestial fails her.

She teleports out of the way of Ronan's first swing (she nearly passes out; she won't be able to pull off a second portal in here). Gets off a blast at his exposed back.

And then he swings his hammer at the ground - and she's flying, but not fast enough, her left leg trailing her right, and the reverberations echo up her leg, shattering bone.

And then she's fully airborne, and arcing her way towards the ship - weaving through or blasting the missiles being fired at her - as her vision goes a little wonky.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she can try to help catch the flying woman in the airlock??

Permalink Mark Unread

Only needs to get close. 2B will catch her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She half collapses once she's to safety.

Well, relative safety.

"Get out of here."

Permalink Mark Unread

No need to tell Ash twice. They're gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes a little once they're out of the Celestial's head - and tucks some of her magical power back under her skin once she no longer has it shielding her.

...She still has a broken leg, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Medi... cal... kit? Is that what's needed?

Permalink Mark Unread

Carrying her to somewhere she can lay down - somewhere quiet. And also some food and water. And yeah a medical kit; she can try to fix this with magic but it's iffy and slow.

But, more importantly: they need to figure out their next step. Fast. Might need to involve getting her to someone who can fix her shattered bones faster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right. She can do the first part of that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chewie can provide a rather exceptionally well stocked medical kit! Honestly pretty much a stashed medical supply room. Though pointing out the kitchen will have to be Ash's job.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ship's not that big, they can find it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good; healing is going to make her hungry.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll see what she can do.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can get her leg stabilized more or less quickly - though she has to improvise a little given Chewie's gear is meant for cats or prisoners. Still, that's good on the 'keep it from bleeding out' front.

And: they really, really need to talk about their next move. As a group.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah? How about booking it for the other end of the galaxy as fast as possible?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't think it'll work. Ronan will have the Reality Stone. And - there's someone worse who wants the Infinity Stones. And who might have picked up on that - display."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, then I guess we're just fucked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or we fight back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And how exactly do you propose we do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can't master the Infinity Stone." Probably. "And it'd be foolish to try. But - we can look for allies of our own. Or at least hamstring Ronan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where are we going to find anyone who is both dumb enough to help and strong enough to be useful?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I might know a few."

"One of them will - also be especially concerned about the Reality Stone. Another has a strong grudge against Ronan's backer - she's currently in jail, so scoping her out might be a little complicated and will add another group gunning for our heads, but she's someone I know well. There's a third person who may or may not currently be in this universe, who's mostly going to be concerned with stopping the Infinity Stones from being used."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think our time constraints are going to rule out the third."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'm hesitant about both the first and second, though for different reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know the first, and the stories around her are inconsistent in some ways - but she's got a good reputation. She's the Sorcerer Supreme, and rumors were split on whether she had the reality stone or the time stone - I think she at least had the reality stone previously, and that she gave it to Asgard, who were definitely the ones who gave it to Tivan. The Sorcerer Supreme - the selection process is a closely guarded secret, but they're usually reliable for things like 'keep Infinity Stones away from genocidal maniacs.' This would be in her jurisdiction. However... Some of the rumors about her are - dark. There's one rumor that she tried to destroy the universe. There's also disagreement about who she even is that has me - suspicious. And she's a powerful woman, and might decide that she's the most fit to watch over the Infinity Stones - and I can't predict her to say if she'll then use them."

"The second... I know her pretty well. - Decent chance you came on her name. Loki. She's currently - probably technically a prisoner of war. She led the most recent invasion of Earth. She was working for Ronan's backer Thanos then. She's slippery, and is probably our best bet for separating Ronan from the Reality Stone without a massive fight. She definitely hates Thanos, will probably extend that to Ronan, and I'm pretty sure wants to stop anyone from using the Infinity Stones. She also has chronic backstabbing disorder, but we've come to an agreement. - Decent chance she knows where the third person I mentioned, America Chavez, is or at least how to contact her. They're - I have no idea if they're friends or sworn enemies and the answer might be 'both.' America Chavez is definitely reliable for this kind of thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Asgardian patron of mischief. Yeah, not sure that'd be our best move."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who is Loki currently imprisoned by?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Asgard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really a soft target."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Strong enough to fight off Ronan if he follows us, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might pull them out of their isolationism, too. And Thanos already invaded one of their 'protectorates;' they won't look kindly on Ronan."

"On the other hand, the Sorcerer Supreme is on Earth, which has... Honestly probably more people who could take Ronan in single combat than Asgard does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"On Earth? Fuck that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a fan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm from Earth. I don't plan on going back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't have to be permanent, and you wouldn't need to even set foot on the planet - but..." Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Earth hasn't achieved widespread space travel yet. Regardless if they have the means to deal with Ronan alone, there is still his fleet to consider. Collateral damage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can try Loki then. And if that doesn't work out, we can try to contact the Sorcerer Supreme without taking the Power Stone too close to Earth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fuckin' great. Always wanted to see Asgard, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They have a reputation for good alcohol and better fights."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, as long as you avoid someone blasting your head off because you dared to set your imperfect foot on territory they've rightfully conquered by force."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a good excuse for a bigger fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fuck yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though we might want to avoid any big fights while breaking Loki out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Spoilsport."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

They should start heading to Asgard then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll put the course in.

Permalink Mark Unread

How do they want to approach breaking Loki out?

Permalink Mark Unread

They could ram the ship into the prison.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ship's sturdy enough?

Permalink Mark Unread

The nose is hardened for boarding actions.

Permalink Mark Unread

How good is it in ship-to-ship fighting?

Permalink Mark Unread

At an even or slight disparity in mass, Ash is confident she can take most things one-on-one. But this isn't exactly a battlecruiser, so there's a limit.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll need to move fast to avoid opposition then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do they even know where the prison is?

Permalink Mark Unread

She does.

Permalink Mark Unread

How accessible is it?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's in walking distance of the palace. So, accessible but defended.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, but is it like, exposed such that ramming it is a viable option?

Permalink Mark Unread

It is, if they can get past the point defense.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not the worst plan she's ever heard.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are fortunately on a pretty fast ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

And hey, if they all die, the fate of the universe is no longer their problem.

Permalink Mark Unread

Go out in a blaze of glory?

Permalink Mark Unread

Better than slowly rotting away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora doesn't intend to keep aging, but fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

One way or another, right.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's got to keep her pretty face.

Permalink Mark Unread

If that's what she worries about, whatever.

Permalink Mark Unread

It helps for convincing people she's trustworthy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, she must need all the help she can get with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a pretty big gap between the reality and the lie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. There is.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's not sure if she's supposed to be complimented or insulted, here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whatever helps her sleep at night.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll pick 'complimented,' then.

Permalink Mark Unread

(2B is fairly sure Ash intended the other.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(But teasing Ash is so much fun.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Well. As long as she's entertained.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(She could tease 2B instead, if 2B wanted.)

Permalink Mark Unread

2B is unclear why she might want that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Teasing can be a way to strengthen bonds within a team, allowing them to gain an understanding of the other without necessarily committing to revealing too much of themselves. And stronger bonds and greater understanding of each other translate fairly clearly into success on operations, at least for her and Ash's species.

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely then it would be better for it to be an 'as well' rather than 'instead'.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unless 2B likes a different kind of teasing, or wants to get closer to Gamora specifically...

Permalink Mark Unread

What sorts of teasing are available?

Permalink Mark Unread

A wide variety, depending on their mood. And how many other people are in the room; Gamora's a private kind of girl, you know.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now she's curious, what could privacy have to do with strengthening the bonds of a team? Surely more participants would be desirable rather than fewer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is 2B not much for privacy, then? More prefers showing off?

Permalink Mark Unread

If that is what's called for.

Permalink Mark Unread

"2B..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, 9S? Do you wish to join in the bonding exercise?"

Permalink Mark Unread

9S groans and buries her face in her hands. "I don't think that's what you're talking about anymore!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? How can you tell?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nooo," she whines. "Please don't make me say it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk. Got 'em.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you'd be a fine addition to our bonding exercise. A third person would let me demonstrate teasing for 2B."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! Nope nope nope nope nope."

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts giggling. "Awww..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think that was effective."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A very good example of teasing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though the offer for private bonding exercises was sincere..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I appreciate the offer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Softer smile. "Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So! We should work out a backup plan in case we fail to breach the prison with the ship and also don't die, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

She has ideas! Many of them are even better than 'just improvise' - and it'll be risky using her magic anywhere she's not shielded, but that adds a lot of flexibility to their plans...

Permalink Mark Unread

That's good! Both the flexibility and not just improvising!

Permalink Mark Unread

She can also fill out Nines' existing information on Asgard's main city layout.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, data.

Permalink Mark Unread

Data!

Permalink Mark Unread

Fuckin' nerds. Ash is gonna go find something else to fill the travel time.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can nerd out over weapons with Rocket!

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, all right.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good ways to pass time all around.

Permalink Mark Unread

Makes the trip go smoothly.

And then, they arrive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Asgard somehow makes even less sense as a layout than Knowhere had - building inside the desiccated skull of a Celestial, the air kept in by force fields, makes an audacious kind of sense.

Asgard does not care about looking like something that reasonably exists. They care about bragging, and the very architecture of their main city is one big I can kick your fucking ass. The city sprawls across an enormous chunk of landscape - entirely artificial landscape that's hovering in the vast depths of space. There's no visible force field even pretending to keep the air in. There's no clear way for the truly excessive waterfalls cascading down the sides to return their water to the top; the waterfalls eventually leave Asgard's enormous sway and dissolve into the misty cloud swirling just past its sphere.

Asgard is a realm that tears open holes in reality, stabilizes them, and then dresses them up as natural or low-tech phenomenon, so that water can gush through for fountains the size of mountains. Asgard is a realm that continuously uses powerful magic to command the wind to stay, and that summons or conjurs more air if needed. Asgard is a realm richer than nearly any other, ruling over eight of the poorest protectorates in the galaxy.

The palace gleams golden in Asgard's equally artificial sun, and any incoming ships are made to wait a very, very long time before being given permission to dock.

Asgard is, however, a realm that knows it's rich. Why waste your luxurious time on a professional force capable of maintaining the border when your king can strike any enemy down with a wave of his hand?

And there's something that Asgard is hiding, that Thanos and therefore Gamora know - that Odin is aging, and that he currently sleeps for long stretches, and that the heir able to wield magic effectively is imprisoned for treason and the sole loyal heir would rather help the protectorates Asgard has long exploited or neglected. Thanos has chosen not to act on this information yet; Gamora doesn't care about showing someone else's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

So in other words, the only protection they've got is the illusion of a wall. Ash is more than happy to fly right through that illusion, straight at the prison wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's some point defense, which mobilizes first to threaten them, then to tell them to stop, then to shoot at them - but once you take away Odin, Asgard is a tiger made of gold foil. And Ash's ship is faster than their little patrol boats, and she's gone straight through harrier blockades.

She makes it to the prison wall without a single scratch, and the thick metal of the prison is tougher than most ships - but she's going fast at a stationary target, and it crumples with a shaking jolt she can feel in her bones.

They now have a breach, and also a very alarmed Asgard that's belatedly rushing to scramble a defense.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, kiddos, unbuckle and let's move. If we have five minutes left with an intact ship, I'll be pleasantly fucking surprised."

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket and Chewie are already out of the ship before she finishes the third word, and Rocket readies her bigger guns - removed from Chewie's stomachs before they started their approach - and starts picking out targets.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Chewie coughs up their biggest guns, since these idiots are giving them just enough room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Turns out anti-aircraft guns come in 'cat operable,' especially if that cat has an uncountable number of tentacles.

They might have more than five minutes, really, given Chewie lines up their first shot and fires just as Ash finishes talking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora's gotten as far as 'unbuckle and stand up.'

Those cats are... Unnervingly practiced at this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. Maybe seven. After you, thief girl, you're the one who knows who Loki is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Quickly into the prison then, her own gun in her hand so she can shoot any prison guards - she knows where the high security cells are, and they're nearby but didn't quite penetrate, so 9S is going to need to open some doors for them...

Asgard, it turns out, is very lazy on air defense - aircraft are unmanly - but excellent on guards. They're going to have their hands full with not getting shot.

Permalink Mark Unread

The guards are going to have their own hands full with not getting said hands chopped off!

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately she needs to help 9S and cover their position with sniper fire and can't really watch 2B fight. She'll need to arrange a spar.

They get through the doors quickly at least - Asgard's a little behind on this kind of security - and then Gamora is leading them to the largest cell -

Permalink Mark Unread

Which contains a gangly woman who's standing and staring at them as they round the corner. She looks more concerned than like she's anticipating a rescue, and her posture is very guarded.

Permalink Mark Unread

No time to really reassure her beyond a quick, "We're breaking you out," as she and 9S get the forcefield walls down. And then a rapid retreat back the way they came.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Loki follows after a second. She doesn't have her knives though, and isn't really contributing to the fighting part of this.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fight is covered. At least she is following.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ship is still there when they get out! Though Rocket and Chewie are having a bit of trouble keeping up with the target rich environment here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rocket! We're leaving! If you were saving a finale, now's the time to clear the sky!"

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll get a path - and get in last, Chewie packing their stuff up in a rush of tentacles as the ship lifts off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to motor.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're going to have a harder time getting out than in - but if Ash guns it she can break atmo pretty quickly, and their little patrol boats aren't designed to fly in vacuum, and it apparently takes them longer to scramble proper ships.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well hell. How about that. Ash Quill raids Asgard and lives to tell about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We make a good team."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as you're not trying to fuck me over, sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might be too dangerous to backstab," she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Damn straight. But speaking of backstabbing... What's up with our rescuee?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Right." She turns to Loki. "To be clear, I'm not grabbing you for Thanos," she says. "This is a pretty straight rescue - we need your help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Great. What do you need help with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You familiar with an asshole named Ronan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not very."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, you will be soon. He's after us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because we took something he needs to give to Thanos."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How much opposition are you up against?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ronan has an army, and is himself approximately equal to a small army. He also at this point may or may not control the Reality Stone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I can get you a better answer on if he does."

Permalink Mark Unread

(Gamora is squinting a little suspiciously.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you just trying to run from Ronan, or do you want to take the fight to him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take the fight to him. He won't stop until we kill him."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Taking on a bigger opponent is something I can definitely help with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

She returns the smile reflexively.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Introductions. I'm 9S, you can call me Nines if you want, this is 2B, Gamora, Ash, Rocket, and Chewie."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Loki. As you hopefully knew, if you were rescuing me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, that's who we were aiming for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd have been awkward to grab the wrong person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, imagine if we had to go back. 'Excuse me guardsman, we just want to do a swap. You already fucked up once, so really this won't be any worse'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And taking everyone in the prison just to be sure would be inconvenient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Need a bigger ship for that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Part of why it'd be inconvenient."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What other prisoners would Asgard even have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Her expression goes a bit dark. "Ones it has no right to hold."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Imperialist pigs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps a return visit at some point is in order then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"After we take down Ronan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That remains the priority."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like it should be." She'd like a more thorough overview on Ronan's capabilities, actually - and any images of him the crew has, or better yet objects he's interacted with or feels strongly towards.

Permalink Mark Unread

Did someone say data? 9S has data.

Permalink Mark Unread

Data! Very useful. Seems like they probably don't have any physical objects, though...

Permalink Mark Unread

Not unless Thief Girl took any souvenirs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately Ronan doesn't own much in the way of personal effects - his armor, his hammer, that sort of thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bet he feels strongly about Gamora, though. Like, she's fucked him over two or three times by now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Magic based on a connection between two people can be - finicky. And risks highlighting Gamora's location.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Yeah let's not do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, whatever. Just a thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

Might work if they're desperate or if her location is already blown, though. But they don't want Thanos on their tail at the same time as Ronan...

Permalink Mark Unread

No. One enemy at a time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not if they can help it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Loki will have to work with what they have.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she need anything else?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some miscellaneous supplies.

...Also something to eat and drink.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can do.

Permalink Mark Unread

And preferably as few people in the room with her as the crew is comfortable with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe 9S could keep an eye on her?

Permalink Mark Unread

...As long as she isn't disruptive, sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can be non-disruptive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Loki's fine with an observer.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Time to get more data!)

Permalink Mark Unread

She does pick the quietest room available - though there's really not much of a selection. It seems she doesn't need much space though, as she starts drawing a diagram on the floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

9S observes intently. She doesn't have much experience with magic.

Permalink Mark Unread

The observation makes her slightly uneasy, but it doesn't affect her work. Though... "This isn't going to do anything impressive from the outside," she warns. "I'll just be projecting my own consciousness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To where?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To spy on Ronan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see. Or well, technically not literally see."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins a little.

"Though it'll help if I know what exactly I'm looking for...

Permalink Mark Unread

9S can describe exactly what Ronan looked like when they saw him on Knowhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd also like to know what she'll be reporting - what parts are significant? What should she look for?

Permalink Mark Unread

If he managed to get hold of the Reality Stone. Where he is, where he's going, how much of his army is still intact. If Loki spots any easy way to kill him, that would be good too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What does it currently look like, and do you think he's likely to have it on him or in a vault somewhere."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Reportedly it was in it's gaseous state, but we didn't manage to get eyes on to verify." Loki should know, that, right? "We think he'll have it with him; he'll want to make use of its power."

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks deeply for a few moments, making small adjustments to her diagram. Then: "...I might be able to pull you with me. Two sets of eyes will be better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does it matter that I'm not, ah, technically alive in the same way you are?"

Permalink Mark Unread

??? "Yeah I noticed you're not biological, it's obvious," she says, of a thing absolutely no one else has noticed (or, at least hasn't noticed and then commented on). "But what does cellular activity have to do with anything? You've got a soul, so you're plenty alive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not too familiar with magic and what I do know doesn't make much sense, so I thought I should say something in case it did matter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Magic makes a lot of sense to me - I can explain more of it later if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! "Explaining things to you is fun, so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I aim to be an attentive listener."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You succeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

She snorts.

"So, want to be looped in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts slightly modifying her diagram! And explains some of what she's doing as she goes - "The runes aren't like, strictly necessary, but it helps for a finicky thing like this. Let me do some of the prep work ahead of time and fix them in place, so I'm not juggling everything live. Right now I'm anchoring things to keep us from getting tracked back to our bodies, without making it harder to actually return..."

Permalink Mark Unread

9S asks questions from the perspective of a complete novice, but has a knack for cutting to the underlying principles that unify seemingly disparate elements.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs a little, and says: "Part of the wider problem - there's no underlying rules to magic. People make up rules to make themselves feel better. To make sense out of a senseless world." She nods to her diagram. "That's what this is. A made-up rule, from a made-up tradition of magic."

"But that's what magic is. It's making things up - it's taking a thought and turning it into reality. Imagining a future and working towards that." She spreads her hands, and green light gathers around them. "Telling a lie and making it the truth."  The green light arcs from her hands, is met by the now glowing diagram - and rises to swirl around 9S.

"Telling a story so wonderful, so perfect - that you believe in so deeply - that for a single, shining moment... The universe believes - "

And the green light dissipates, and they're in the back of a cavernous room - a dark audience hall on a dark spaceship, an imposing throne on the opposite end, containing an even more imposing man. A hall full of aliens who don't call an alarm at the sudden appearance of two strangers in their midst.

"That two girls can look across the galaxy," she says, "And not be seen." And then she flashes 9S a teasing smile. "Let's take a look around. Just remember: don't doubt yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Easy for you to say..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. It's loud - and no one seems to hear them. "If you want to do magic - you'll have to get used to this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm working up to it, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Better learn quick."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

She offers her arm to 9S, to lead her through the crowd.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lead on, magical mystery lady.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ronan is holding some kind of court it seems, or else a war council. They start out too far away to hear what's being said.

He has his hammer with him - and there's a violent red light roiling within and around it, one that wasn't present before. It looks almost wet, slick with blood or liquid fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

...9S wants to see if Loki will identify that before saying anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

She clearly notices it - it's very obviously magical - but doesn't seem to be paying extra attention to it beyond 'magic thing being held by Ronan,' and doesn't comment on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That, on his hammer, matches the description of the Reality Stone, the last time it was seen."

Permalink Mark Unread

The world before them - shifts, a bit, and a haze of Loki's green magic wraps around them; Ronan's hammer looks like a billowing black hole with the filter. "It's powerful enough," she confirms after a moment. "Possibly unsafe to approach any closer, actually." The green haze dissipates.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was hoping to get some idea of his movements..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can do it, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then closer, cautiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems to be a discussion about tracking down the Power Stone - which was the one Ronan actually promised to Thanos - versus just going straight on the offensive against the Nova, now that they have such a powerful weapon. Ronan doubts the Power Stone is a threat, and doesn't care about his deal with Thanos, but is hesitant to put two of those Stones together...

Seems like he might actually be planning to leave their crew alone, and just go focus on his rampage across the galaxy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. That's both good and bad.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Might be bad for motivation. She doesn't actually want Ronan marauding across the galaxy, she thinks, even if he's leaving her alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, the trouble is going to be getting some members of the group to see that.

Permalink Mark Unread

...They could just not mention it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Possibly. But 9S would prefer not to deceive allies like that. Causing others to join a fight under false pretenses only sets up later trouble.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

This isn't the time for discussion, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

No.

And she's having a bit of trouble holding onto the spell - the closest they can get to Ronan is the edge of their enhanced hearing range, before the world they're seeing starts to warp unnervingly. (Though no one they're spying on reacts.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps a retreat, for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

They need to back up before Loki can safely return them to their bodies, but once they do - it's pretty straightforward to go back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was an experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "It was. Did you learn what you were after?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything other than 'Ronan has the Reality Stone, and isn't pursuing us?'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not exactly who we thought you were, are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What do you mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Loki should have known Gamora. Should have worked with her before. Should have recognized the Reality Stone."

Permalink Mark Unread

...She bites her lip.

"I'm Loki," she says, totally honestly. (Though she sounds nervous, too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Memory loss?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Sigh. "Yeah. My first memory is - getting captured, though I still - know how to do things. Just not why. But I don't know what happened to cause that."

"Asgard doesn't consider amnesia a good defense against - whatever charges were against me, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It's - I don't regret existing."

And then: "But I'm still useful. I still have all my abilities," she says, somewhat defensively.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know what it's like," 9S says. "To be- missing your self like that. Reconstructing from scraps and thirdhand accounts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm Loki, but..."

"I don't know if I'm the old Loki. If there's any meaningful way that we're the same person. Or if I want to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. That's not a question anyone else can answer for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I do want to - learn more about her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can share what I have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

"...You're taking this well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Memory loss is something I'm accustomed to. 2B and I, we were created to fight. There was a central server for data backups, but comms aren't always reliable under battle conditions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thoughtful nod. "I - don't want to lose any of my memories. Even though there's so few... They're all I have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's all any of us really have."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Feels like it should be the only thing they can't take from you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This world is not so kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - It should be different."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll take a lot of work to get there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll work hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we could help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll make sure it gets added to the list."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long a list is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So far, I think it goes: Ronan, Asgardian prisons, sanctity of memory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah. Sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you approve?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great."

"We should report back to the others."

Permalink Mark Unread

...She really does not want to tell anyone else about the amnesia.

Permalink Mark Unread

That doesn't seem necessary to share. Though Gamora might have suspicions already.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Wasn't she just arguing that they shouldn't hide information from allies?

Permalink Mark Unread

Misleading information. Loki's memory doesn't have any bearing on Ronan's present capabilities, and she still has access to all the abilities they thought she did. The thing in doubt would be her willingness to join in the fight, but that can be answered without reference to the processes that preceded the decision.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does affect her ability to do things like predict and recognize the Infinity Stones.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ronan's control of it could be outside the scope of her experience.

Permalink Mark Unread

...True.

Permalink Mark Unread

So no problem with that?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then let's go see if they can get Ash and Rocket to agree to fight Ronan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Possibly harder than spying on him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hardly any time spent around them and Loki already knows them so well.

Permalink Mark Unread

They have very strong personalities.

Permalink Mark Unread

They do indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though Loki thinks they can be convinced.

Permalink Mark Unread

9S would welcome assistance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Might be better for 9S to take the lead since she knows them better, though...

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough! Out to the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket's pretty easy to find, sprawling confidently in the center of a chair several times too big for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora's lurking in a corner.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Chewie is sleeping on the highest point in the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good news and bad news."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bad news: Ronan definitely has the Reality Stone," she starts with, "And it interferes with surveillance. Also, he's planning to try and wipe out a couple of planets."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What the fuck's the good news?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...Ronan's decided not to bother going after them. Yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soooo... problem solved?

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shouldn't leave Ronan to rampage around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As long as he's not rampaging at me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you really want to spend the rest of your life running and hiding from someone like him?"

"He's not singling us out now. But men like him don't stop. Not unless we make them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not to mention, the more developed economies he wrecks along the way, the less your four billion units will be worth."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mumblegrumble.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the harder it will be to offload the Power Stone, and the more tempted others will be to forcibly take it from us."

"Our best bet is to stop him - and make it clear no one will survive fucking with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, all right. Clearly y'all ain't gonna let this go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine with plan 'shoot that fucker out of the air.' It'll look great on my portfolio."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it was that easy, someone would have done it already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nobody else was us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've got some powerful people on our side - and the Power Stone, if we can figure out how to use it safely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'If'. It practically melted the last person to try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Admittedly a pretty big if. And it's not safe to experiment with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what are our advantages?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ronan doesn't use magic. And he doesn't have anyone who does."

"Also... He's mostly drawn disaffected young men to his cause. Few of them are actually trained soldiers, despite his best efforts to get them to a decent shape. Ronan is the only serious threat to all of us on an individual level - his lieutenant is somewhat better than me in combat, but that puts him behind everyone else on our team."

"We're a smaller team, too. Small enough to hide with Loki's magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So infiltration and assassination."

Permalink Mark Unread

Loki nods. "I can hold my own in an open battle or a war - but my skills are at their best use in that sort of work."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've got a few tricks for that ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm better at it than combat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any time I get to hit a guy without him hitting back is okay in my book."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most of my jobs are ambushes, so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So long as we're careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am always careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at the rest of their crew.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fiiine, I'll be 'careful.'" She makes actual finger quotes (toe bean quotes?) on 'careful.' (It's difficult to tell if she's joking.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be at least as careful as Rocket."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we're definitely good!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I should be able to hide anyone who isn't actively stabbing someone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That will be helpful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly essential."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Almost certainly," 2B corrects.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can practice together before we hit Ronan, too. See if I can get up to 'hidden even when actively stabbing someone.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds like fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Training together will be good in other ways, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Improve unit cohesion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And we don't want to go into a fight like this unable to predict each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, exactly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure the ship is a good place to spar, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

Do they have somewhere convenient to stop?

Permalink Mark Unread

Ash doesn't typically roam around this close to Asgard.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a lot in between here and the Nova Empire..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think we should get a bit more distance from 'here' first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know some places."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. Just need coordinates."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll set a course. Training grounds, here we come.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's nearby a stop she uses for refueling - so, pretty convenient. It's only inhabitable like a quarter of the year thanks to an irregular orbit, but it's got a mostly breathable atmosphere and not a lot of people bother with it, which is great for her. She's actually got a good set of ranges she's built over the years, and some good areas for practicing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they should get to work, or whatever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably start with solo demonstrations or explanations, then sparring? She wants to watch 2B fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, that sounds fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora mostly sticks to explaining her magic - even with Loki's help hiding, she doesn't want to risk drawing Thanos's attention if she doesn't have to.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does that mean you're not going to use magic when it's for real or not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll use magic against Ronan, but not lesser threats."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right..." Ash is very suspicious of this whole 'magic' business anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

She might be in for an experience against Loki, then, who is not holding back. And who absolutely lives up to her billing as all of: capable of invading Earth single handedly, useful against Ronan, a high importance prisoner for Asgard, and incredibly fucking annoying.

The illusions are, probably, the worst of that. Nothing quite like an opponent you can't keep track of because she's never where your senses say she is. But the short distance teleportation, the telekinetic knives (and rather unmagically high skill with knife work), the general toughness, also the general 'using a very carefully shaped shield to catch energy blades because why not'... Yeah. She's obnoxious.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's fucked up, is what it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Might be worth doing some team matchups.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who's on which team?

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora might be able to counter Loki even without risking revealing herself...

Permalink Mark Unread

2B and Ash have similar though not identical styles.

Permalink Mark Unread

9S is more of a cyber support specialist.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket and Chewie are best at range or with someone covering for them.

Permalink Mark Unread

So two magic, two melee, three range and/or support... How about Ash, Loki, Rocket, and Gamora, 2B, 9S, and Chewie?

Permalink Mark Unread

Works for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they should break up to strategize.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily there's something resembling separate rooms, to give them space from each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Might not stop Loki from spying, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can put up a ward for that without blowing her cover, fortunately... They'll need to stay vigilant, though - it's possible to detect that kind of spying.

Permalink Mark Unread

What signs are they looking for?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll walk them through it. (Might be easier with atypical senses.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Wide-band EM transceivers, maybe?

Permalink Mark Unread

Could work!

Permalink Mark Unread

Just so happens 9S has a couple of those installed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll be main lookout, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

If she can get the parameters tuned correctly!

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora can help with that - stealth and illusions are safe enough for her to use here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Data acquisition time!

Permalink Mark Unread

And skill learning! It'll be extra useful to working together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Truly, the benefits are multitudinous.

Permalink Mark Unread

And once that's done... They can get to planning in earnest.

Permalink Mark Unread

2B is confident that she outmatches Ash, one on one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket might be one of their bigger challenges, actually...

...She's just realized no one on their team can understand Chewie, which slightly limits plotting against Rocket. Damn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe Chewie can be primarily fighting against Rocket?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not a bad idea...

"Chewie - meow once if you think that's a good idea, twice if maybe, three if no?"

Permalink Mark Unread

They meow twice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Decisive. We like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm... Can you let us know if you object to or approve of any specific plans?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meow once!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Great.

With that handled... Loki.

Gamora honestly doesn't know the full extent of her abilities. She's - slippery, with a tendency to hold her cards in reserve.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Full extent' may be the wrong way to think about, at least in terms of magic. When 9S talked to her, Loki said her magic was about taking a lie and making it real.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That is total bullshit, and also explains how she keeps pulling new powers out of her ass. Ugh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was more or less my reaction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, she'll definitely be obnoxious. Only question is how obnoxious..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As much as she can possibly get away with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we constrain what she can get away with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Keep her under pressure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Attention to what she's doing should also constrict her; we're arguably part of the universe she needs to fool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can help with that. Practically my design purpose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me and you are our best counter for her, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So sounds like we have our assignments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Any other concerns?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well... If I was Loki and we had split up like this, I wouldn't ever let the other team actually see us when we meet back up. So we should watch for something like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmmm... "I can do something to increase my sensitivity to magic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are the downsides to that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Loki could - effectively blind me by overwhelming the sense, but that'd be difficult and costly to do. It gives me a headache if I keep it up too long, otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems worth it, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it will be." That doesn't take her much time, fortunately.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like they're ready, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chirp!

Permalink Mark Unread

As they can be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then let's go!

Permalink Mark Unread

Their opponents meet them.

- And neither Gamora nor 9S can detect any active magic use from Loki. She's definitely there, and very magical as a person, but it doesn't look like she's got an illusion or anything running.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very suspicious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Is she so sure there's going to be trickery?

Permalink Mark Unread

If there isn't, she'll be disappointed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to keep her eyes open, then.

And: is everyone ready for the fight?

Permalink Mark Unread

Fuck yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rocket's barely waiting for the start signal before firing her guns - at everyone on the opposing side.

Permalink Mark Unread

2B ducks gracefully out of the cone of fire, closing rapidly with Ash and delivering a flurry of blows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whereas Chewie rushes Rocket, to try and disrupt her -

Permalink Mark Unread

And Gamora moves to keep Loki busy.

Permalink Mark Unread

9S hangs back, keeping an eye on the battle as a whole, where best to put her weight on the scales.

And, of course, whatever trickery Loki's cooked up.

Permalink Mark Unread

That trickery seems to involve...

Disengaging from Gamora, trying to close with 9S -

And then everyone's vision very briefly being obscured by dark smoke.

Permalink Mark Unread

What happens next?

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora counter-spells, quickly and fiercely - the smoke clears -

Permalink Mark Unread

And their opponents are mostly in the same places and positions...

Except Loki is nowhere to be seen, and now there are two copies of 9S, neither exactly where the original stopped.

Permalink Mark Unread

"9S?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here."

Permalink Mark Unread

- At the exact same time as the other 9S.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmmm don't like that.

But if she and Loki are both out her side is still up one. "Concentrate on the fight," she calls, her sword arcing in for an attack at her doppelganger.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does the same -

Though the flow of battle from there isn't mimickry, at least. Or. Well. Not an exact mimicry - Loki is insanely good at hitting things with bladed weapons and is doing a really good job of matching 9S's style. Well enough it'll be hard for any observers to tell them apart, at least quickly in a chaotic melee.

...And 9S isn't entirely sure Loki's actually fully out, she's getting flickers of weird distortions in her visual sensors around the edges -

And of course a lot of other things can happen between their allies, with everyone's attention drawn to her trick of turning into 9S...

Permalink Mark Unread

Lots of things like Ash actually landing a touch on 2B for, instance.

Permalink Mark Unread

-She wasn't there, 2B knew where she was-

Permalink Mark Unread

- And Loki grabs Chewie, shoving a muzzle on their face as they try to pull her in with their tentacles -

Permalink Mark Unread

And Rocket opens fire on both 2B and Gamora from where 2B thought Ash had been standing -

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora hits the ground and steps up her attempts to unravel Loki's construct-illusions.

Permalink Mark Unread

And ?Loki? ?9S's doppelganger? stops pretending quite so hard to be her, and her blows start coming faster and harder, trying to get more into 9S's personal space -

More into dagger range, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

No thank you, she would really prefer not to be in dagger range. Would really prefer to be out of melee range entirely, if that's an option. Which it probably isn't, but all she needs is enough enough space to blast 2B with the updated sensor package algorithms she's been working on-

Permalink Mark Unread

She can get that!

At the cost of her doppelganger lunging through her guard when she's at her most vulnerable.

Permalink Mark Unread

A calculated sacrifice. On the upside-

Permalink Mark Unread

2B is now engaging Rocket and Ash with substantially improved accuracy, less distracted by the illusions and more precisely targeting their weak point.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora gets off a counter spell - the Loki holding Chewie pops like a soap bubble -

And then, for no externally apparent reason, she passes out.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the doppelganger fades into Loki, who steps into place with Ash to engage 2B.

2B could almost certainly take her in melee if she was alone.

She isn't alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately not.

This seems like a loss.

Permalink Mark Unread

2B does take them a while to whittle down -

But Loki's durable enough to tank even 2B's heaviest blows - she almost makes a point of showing that off, and it lets her pretty easily intercept blows aimed at her team -

And with three enemies, 2B's durability is pretty likely to run out before hers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm. No point taking serious damage in a spar.

Permalink Mark Unread

She backs off once that's clear, twisting her hand - which wakes Gamora up.

"Good fight," she says, stretching. "I actually felt that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It did not much appear so."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I can ignore pain when I need to. But I'm going to have a nice sore bruise tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oof. Nice to know it wasn't all for nothing, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You guys are good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've practiced."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can get more practice in together before we hit Ronan, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And go over what your tricks can do... Do you think you could replace one of Ronan's lieutenants?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you can give me a target, and if we can get them separated. Though I'm not sure it'll keep working if we get too close to the Reality Stone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seemed like it would have deleterious effects on other magics."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It... Messes with the underlying rules. I could probably adapt to it, but... Not easily, and not quickly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a plan to rely on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though we can use Gamora's idea to get in the door..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The door of his spaceship?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And into his war room."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My ship'll have to be disguised too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be tough, but... I can probably manage it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll also need to find one of Ronan's lieutenants outside, to know who to impersonate."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "I can give you names, descriptions, and personality overviews - we'll just need to catch someone when they're away from him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, that's what I said."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though he does need to refuel, resupply... We could get in that way, possibly more easily."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bets on Ronan only refueling on conquered planets now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can get onto a conquered planet. There's defensive systems, but... I'm pretty sure Nines can run circles around their identification codes, make them think we're friendlies."

Permalink Mark Unread

She flashes a thumbs up. "No problem!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ronan sends down courier ships rather than his entire starship for fuel and supplies... It reduces his exposure to the heathen masses, but means the overall security is weaker - and it'll be easier to chain along who we're replacing if we get in on a supply run."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can use that ship instead of mine, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be easier."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. It's a plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

Their first step will be figuring out which planet Ronan will be refueling at next, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

9S can do some digging on that front.

Permalink Mark Unread

And they can spar and go through contingency plans in the meantime.

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Things proceed as planned...

Until they find themselves in a shuttle, about to dock with Ronan's ship, carrying supplies, all under one of Loki's illusions to look like a shuttle tech or officer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well shit. Imagine that. The plan's working. 'Course, it's just the hardest part left, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

First step: getting through the docking procedures, and convincing the intake crew that they are who they say they are.

Permalink Mark Unread

Did you know that quite a lot of training material these days is electronic? And that even people working for as fearsome a warlord as Ronan don't always have good digital hygiene? Truly, the wonders of the modern age never cease. They have the proper procedures, so no worries on that front, as long as Gamora has the officer's character correct.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora is better at pretending to be other people than Loki is, which is honestly terrifyingly good, and also knew the officer.

She could convince said officer's husband that she's the real one, if the husband was asked to choose between them. She could probably even make the officer seriously doubt which of them is the real one.

She's not going to be the weak link here, and she can effectively cover for any team members who are less talented at lying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, might help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chewie is pretending to be a very taciturn tech.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Rocket is somehow worse at lying than Ash.

Permalink Mark Unread

The others will take the lead, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Luckily, Ronan's army doesn't expect random grunts to say much.

Permalink Mark Unread

We love exploitable security flaws stemming from systemic mismanagement in the bad guy's operation.

Permalink Mark Unread

All the superpowered hammers in the universe can't save you from systemic dysfunction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sucks to suck.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a nice, lovely infiltration they've got going. It'd be a shame if something were to... Happen to it.

Like a large black bird perching above the doorframe into the antechamber to Ronan's warroom. The miscellaneous techs coming and going around them only now seem to be noticing it, and a few slow their steps, turn to stare...

Permalink Mark Unread

Why is there a bird on a spaceship?

Permalink Mark Unread

Loki tenses -

Permalink Mark Unread

And the bird screams.

And their disguises shatter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, fuck.

Permalink Mark Unread

At the war table, Ronan's head snaps up. "GET THEM!" he bellows, the eerie red glow emanating from his hammer pulsing in time with his anger.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time for Plan B: high explosives launched at higher velocity!

It's honestly amazing how many guns that glamor was hiding.

Permalink Mark Unread

High explosives are as dust before the might of Ronan.

And indeed, rather than a rain of fire, a soft shower of dust is all Rocket's efforts achieve as the red glow increases.

Permalink Mark Unread

Loki knows her magic will be disrupted by the Reality Stone -

So she aims for the floor under him, deftly slipping around the twisting radius of the Infinity Stone.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Gamora shoots the miscellaneous soldiers trying to support him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely these pitiful weaklings have more than this?

Permalink Mark Unread

A little more, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pathetic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ouch.

Permalink Mark Unread

She glances at 2B - a silent take him together

(Loki's better at magic than fighting usually, but she's still plenty deadly with a blade, and is more likely to survive a hit from Ronan than anyone.)

Permalink Mark Unread

2B will screen for Loki to slip around.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll close, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

The only thing the Asgardian closes with is a false reality, as the true Ronan strikes her from behind.

Permalink Mark Unread

She spins and dodges under his blow, knives lashing for the unprotected joints in his armor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately her knives are made of paper now. And Ronan's return swing impacts with the effective force of a small moon.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Except, no it doesn't.

A thousand crows cloud his vision, swirl around him - no, it's a single crow, flitting past, wing barely missing his eyes - no, a darkness like what lies beyond stars, beyond death -

Permalink Mark Unread

If he's hitting with the force of a small moon, then she'll be a supernova. A flame that leans away when struck at. A volcano errupting into a fist aimed for -

His hammer. For the red stone set in it.

Reality's fucking off? So what. The world is chaos and story beneath this thin veneer of physics, and Loki matters more than him. And Loki is made of story.

He's nothing but a tourist.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her attack connects, with a tiny click and the world seems to pause as the stone shivers. The red light sucks back into the depths like a rewinding tape and the stone soars out of the hammer, passing straight through the back of it and arcing across the room with graceful swoops. It comes to rest in front of Ash and Ronan lunges for it-

Permalink Mark Unread

And Ash, acting more on instinct than rational thought, grabs up the Reality Stone.

Permalink Mark Unread

And red light surges through her.

Permalink Mark Unread

OH FUCK

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora lunges for Ash, dropping everything she's been doing to hide herself and unfolding her full power around her, spells crackling in her mouth -

She grabs Ash's hand.

The glowing red cracks spread across her skin, too. But it's... More bearable for Ash, somehow.

Still not bearable enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Processors in parallel. Sharing the load? Worth a try. 2B's closer. 9S sends a ping.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grabs Gamora's other hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

It spreads through her -

Permalink Mark Unread

And Loki grabs Ash's other hand -

Permalink Mark Unread

As Chewie helpfully(?) wraps a tentacle around 2B's hand -

Permalink Mark Unread

And Rocket curses and holds on to Chewie.

Permalink Mark Unread

The power is definitely spreading among all of them!

Permalink Mark Unread

And 9S is now close enough to grab Loki's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

The world is pulsing and twisting around them - a roiling mass of chaos -

But Ash, with so much of the pressure taken off, feels suddenly able to direct it.

Permalink Mark Unread

All right, asshole. See how you like reality rending around you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ronan is not so much a fan.

Because Ash has turned him into a fine mist.

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

And now for the finale: don't turn themselves or the entire ship around them into a fine mist!

Permalink Mark Unread

That one's going to be a little harder.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's got the entire team helping, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's no need to fight alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ffffffuck.

That does help, somehow.

Permalink Mark Unread

And -

The Reality Stone calms. Barely. But enough they can probably force it into a container.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Anyone got something like that?

Permalink Mark Unread

Gamora had worked with Chewie to rig one up, earlier. It's not as robust as the one containing the Power Stone - but it'll do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pass it over, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Chewie coughs it up!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then in it goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

...And now they're on an enemy ship with some very pissed off lieutenants and some half panicking, half pissed off grunts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to cut their way to an escape ship?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep!

Permalink Mark Unread

Right. Let's do this.

Permalink Mark Unread

After Ronan, the rest of the crew are pretty much a piece of cake - especially for 2B, Loki, and Ash. And 9S is able to secure them a fast and discreet getaway ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Finally, some good fucking luck.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Holy shit we did it!!!" Rocket starts cackling once they're clear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah we fuckin' did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's break out the good booze when we get to your ship."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bold of you to assume I keep any of that in reserve."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Me and Chewie do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Drinks on you, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then back to the ship!

Permalink Mark Unread

Good to be home.

Permalink Mark Unread

And good to be celebrating!

Permalink Mark Unread

It was a success. For this stage of the mission, anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

...A major issue is they now have two Infinity Stones. Which is, supposedly, a bad idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who the hell can they trust enough to pawn these pieces of shit off on, though?

Permalink Mark Unread

...At which moment a red line of fire traces out a tall oval off to the side, resolving quickly into a portal that a woman in a red leotard and red cape with tall red boots and a red partial helm framing her face (she has a Theme Color, okay) steps through. The portal shows beyond her a perfectly ordinary room with a view of trees outside the window.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's followed shortly by another woman in a more conservatively cut dark robe, cinched at the waist by a green belt. Around her neck she wears an eye-shaped pendant, gold with ornate filigree.

"Hello there."

Permalink Mark Unread

...She's heard conflicting stories about who the Sorcerer Supreme is.

There really should only be one. But...

"The Sorcerers Supreme," she says, voice low.

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the flesh. And I think you have something that belongs to me."
