i took the medicine and i went missing
for better or worse, death is not the end

Anakin's sitting on Elesse's bed, her knees tucked into her chest, her arms wrapped around them, her gaze distant. The bed is made, rumpled only by her movements, and the apartment is - empty. Quiet.

One could be forgiven for thinking it's unlived in.

Anakin's having a debate with herself, an ongoing negotiation, her mind spiraling and eating itself and struggling to get away, to live -

Permalink Mark Unread

It isn't much of a decision, in the end.

She gets up. She finds what she needs to leave a note. She stares at it, blankly, for a few long moments, before writing -

Elesse - I'm sorry. I couldn't wait. I couldn't keep doing this. I love you.

Please take care of yourself.

There's so much more she could say. Reasons. Reassurances. Recriminations. But she's tired. So, so very tired, and her mind is nothing but pain when it isn't dulled by exhaustion or worse -

She has sleeping pills. She's been unable to sleep on her own no matter how tired she gets, and... It feels appropriate.

She knows how much to take. (She's been saving them so she'll always have enough. It isn't too hard, with the excuse of her long deployments.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin curls up in Elesse's bed, wrapped in one of Elesse's robes, under her sheets. She puts the note on the beside table. And she takes her pills, and she closes her eyes -

Permalink Mark Unread

And it isn't so much that she opens her eyes, it's that - it's like dreaming, or waking up, or dreaming and then realizing she's already awake -

It's like looking at her body from the outside. No physical senses - no sense of her own skin, of gravity, of the dryness in her mouth nor the vague headache behind her eyes. No pressure of her feet on the floor. No pulse in her chest. Her vision is almost disorienting - pure information, no imperfections from her eyes.

Anakin stares down at her body, and realizes that killing herself technically didn't even work.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't know how long she stares, trying to process - it's weirdly easy to think. Her thoughts don't skitter off on their own. Her mind doesn't try to eat itself. Old images don't shove their way to the front. Nothing yells at her.

Her chest doesn't hurt. She... Thinks she has emotions, but they're weak and well behaved next to the tempest that has been whirling around and through her for -

Years, maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

She stares long enough that morning comes, and her comm goes off -

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anakin?" Elesse's voice comes over the comm. "Anakin, are you there? I'm not receiving visual on this end."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Oh No.

She... Has not tested if anyone else can perceive her - she's never seen a - ghost - the closest she's heard of is ancient Sith lords leaving behind revenants in tombs -

- What if this is just. What death is like.

"Elesse?" she tries, voice uncertain and wavery.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anakin? ...All right. I don't know if you're there or if you have the comm set to auto- I'm calling because you said you wanted to talk. We're breaking orbit now, so I don't have very long. Call back if you get this in the next twenty minutes or so. Oh, and if you're in my room, please refill the soap in the 'fresher, I didn't have time to put in the work order."

Permalink Mark Unread

- She starts crying. It feels weird, like she's going through the motions of it, the actual emotion shallow - "Elesse - " she tries to shout, but she knows her teacher can't hear -

Something rattles in the room - she hasn't lost control like that with the Force in forever -

- She affected something -

Hesitantly, clumsily, she focuses on the Force and tries to type -

elesse somethings wrong

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Wait, I'm getting a message... Anakin? What is it, what's wrong?" She reaches out to feel along her old bond with her padawan (something that she hasn't done very much of at all, these past few years).

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is... Muted. Small.

But - large at the same time. Diffuse like she sometimes gets when she's battle meditating, though Elesse has at best brushed against that. A sense that she's still there, still alive, but... Also not.

She's scared, and the thundering echoes of her despair and self hatred from before her death nearly swamp that. She's numb, and also upset enough she feels like she's barely cohering. (Like maybe this is one last gasp before she truly joins the Force.)

Her emotions aren't as bad as they were, when she had a body, and she can actually think through them -

But they're still pretty unpleasant to be feeling.

She hadn't expected to have to deal with the fallout of this. She hadn't thought of how to tell Elesse, because that wouldn't be her problem anymore.

Except now it is.

(She's regretting killing herself, right now, except for how she's also kind of regretting it not working.)

'Elesse I'm sorry,' races along their bond, loud and clear and echoing, and she reaches back as well -

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse has been very busy, distracted running two and a half theater's worth of campaigns, only managed to carve out this time to call Anakin back because last-minute changes had delayed their departure time slightly, so all her scheduled calls are over with and she has the next twelve hours of comm-free hyperspace to get her work done. She hasn't been worrying so much about Anakin because all the reports she was receiving have been saying that Anakin has been one of the highest-performing Jedi. She is rapidly reconsidering the wisdom of that assumption. Anakin, it seems, is not fine. Elesse should have worried about her more. Elesse should have pulled strings to get Anakin under her command, at least for a little while. It's going to take too long for her to get back to Coruscant, to arrange that Anakin is still on Coruscant when she gets there-

Permalink Mark Unread

Humorless laugh over their bond. 'I don't think that's - a problem anymore.'

This shouldn't be funny. It isn't. It's just... Absurd.

She doesn't want to let Elesse into her mind, to her senses right now - she suddenly wants to delay Elesse knowing -

That'd... Be cruel, probably.

'Elesse I'm still here but - but I think -'

She doesn't think. She knows. But she can't say it, not yet.

(How is she supposed to tell someone about her own death?)

Permalink Mark Unread

'Anakin... What happened?'

Permalink Mark Unread

`Elesse I - '

She reluctantly opens up her senses a little if - Elesse wants to look. She doesn't think Elesse should look.

'I killed myself. I don't think it worked.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Shock. Dismay.

An overpowering urge to give Anakin a hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wants a hug! She wants a hug so much - she wants to see Elesse at least once, that'd been her biggest hesitancy with killing herself -

She reaches desperately for Elesse like she can bridge the gap between them with nothing but her determination -

And then the world lurches and changes around her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anakin!"

Elesse can't, actually, give her a hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's spent the last - forever - spending a very significant chunk of her waking hours in battle meditation.

It doesn't really occur to her that 'meld into Elesse's mind/ body' is not a normal action, here. She wants a hug. She does not have a (living) body. Elesse has a body. The solution practically suggests itself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse. Uh. Wasn't expecting that.

She will try not to kick Anakin out instinctively, to be open and welcoming.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She can leave if Elesse wants? (She is not particularly affected by Elesse's aborted flinch. She's... Very hard to kick out when she doesn't want to leave. (Not all of the people put under her command are enthusiastic about it. But they have orders, and she has orders, and, well...  There's never room for insubordination.))

(She's trying very, very hard not to just be Elesse like she normally would, but... Her sense of self doesn't have good boundaries.)

She's - also trying not to just attempt taking control of Elesse's body, but - can Elesse hug herself? If she's okay with Anakin staying.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Elesse can hug herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug! And warm snuggly feeling wrapping around Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

This is. Nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Love you,' she thinks/ sends/ is. 'I'm - sorry.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I should be the one saying that.'

Permalink Mark Unread

...She has a lot of strong and conflicted feelings about who's to blame which sound very unpleasant to deal with and she - does not have any spare cope right now.

And. Speaking of.

'I don't want - anyone knowing I still exist.' Assuming she keeps existing. 'Other than you.' Because then she'd have to figure out how to fix the thing where she still exists, which would make Elesse sad.

Permalink Mark Unread

'All right. I won't tell.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Warmth/ gratitude/ love.

...Somebody is probably going to find her body soon. Her leave wasn't very long, and - she thinks it's already been over an hour - since. Maybe longer. (Almost certainly longer.)

...Elesse will have to act like she doesn't - already know.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse would have felt their bond break.

Permalink Mark Unread

...It was. Honestly probably a couple hours ago.

That's - gonna be obvious from her body.

And Anakin doesn't think Elesse's the type to just - keep working. If she feels that. She hopes Elesse isn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Elesse hopes she isn't too.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Maybe just. Act like they'd already broken their bond.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe.

(In the back of her mind, Elesse is running through the steps it would take to get to a small shuttlecraft and away from the fleet without arousing suspicion or putting blame on her troops when they drop out of hyperspace for a nav check.)

Permalink Mark Unread

...Okay Anakin has very little ground to stand on here. However. She just tried 'how about instead of dealing with my problems by talking to people, I do Not That, and make everything someone else's problem instead,' and then she messed up and had to tell Elesse an even worse thing than being suicidal rather than successfully making that not Anakin's problem. Though she's really pleased Elesse would go AWOL for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is a point, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can pretend - something else went weird with the bond. They don't have to claim Elesse didn't care, or that they'd already broken it. And Elesse can message someone and say something feels weird and ask them to check on Anakin, and then - resign after. And go AWOL if they won't let her. Anakin wasn't all that sure she'd be allowed to leave, the atmosphere seemed... Off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is... not sure if any Jedi would be allowed to resign from this war. Not at this stage.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Possibly Elesse should just go AWOL now, yeah. Simpler.

Also Anakin knew it.

Permalink Mark Unread

This war has... made many things harder.

Time off would be good for Elesse.

She has a lot to sort out. Even besides- her neglect of Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Yeah.

And Anakin - already abandoned her girls. Abandoned any good she could do as part of the war, because...

It's a trap. All of it. And Elesse shouldn't be trapped either.

Permalink Mark Unread

A trap?

Permalink Mark Unread

...There's - weird twisty thoughts in Anakin. Things she can't think about.

But it seems really really obvious to her that the war is going nowhere good. That they're not going to win. No one is going to win. It's just - a meat grinder, that will eat up the entire galaxy. And maybe fighting is better than surrendering but -

There's some small goods they're doing. But it's all... Pointless.

(Why she thinks that is... A little twisty. But a lot of it is that continuously using battle meditation - being in so many fucking battles, she can coordinate multiple legions at once, she needs to be physically present for the biggest longest most complicated battles but most battles aren't that, most are things she can do from across the galaxy if she has an anchor - and. It's done weird things to her. To her perception of the Force.)

(She can see, clear as a calm day under a blue sky, that there'll be no victors in this war.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse definitely needs to meditate on this.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's getting - harder to not just take Elesse. Anakin's feeling a bit - blurry. So she steps out, and the depth of their connection - especially Anakin's connection to Elesse's senses - fades a bit.

"...I think you might've been right about just leaving now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so. I don't-"

"I do not think I can continue to participate in this war."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I couldn't."

"So let's leave. Together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

The fleet has entered hyperspace by now, so they have... a while, to plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

And to - meditate. Think about things.

Anakin is... Not alright, even if she's better than she was. (Somebody is almost certainly going to find her body while they're in hyperspace.)

She's... Struggling to think about all of it, though - she's able to think about more without her head screaming at her, but there's just...

A lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very much a lot.

Elesse is... going to do the minimum necessary such that she can get them away safely. The rest can wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

(...She doesn't really know what to do with herself right now. When she can't curl against Elesse or try to sleep, and when the contents of her head are... Unpleasant like this.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They could try meditating together. (Elesse is only a little worried this will break down the walls she's put up to keep functioning.)

Permalink Mark Unread

...Depends on if Elesse wants - to hear everything at once, or a bit at a time as - she's able to handle it.

Permalink Mark Unread

...A bit at a time might be better.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay.

...Does she have anything Anakin can read or do? To get her mind off of the everything.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are a myriad of logistical things Elesse had been intending to arrange during this trip. It would be helpful for those left behind...

Permalink Mark Unread

- She doesn't know if she can. Do that. Mentally.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's entirely fair. Elesse has her library on her datapads still, though she has not had time to read for pleasure in quite a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Neither has Anakin - reading through Elesse's library sounds nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Will she need any help setting up?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Probably. She can use the Force still but it's awkward to type with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Elesse will aid Anakin before tending to herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's... doing her best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin knows they have a lot to talk about with what happened, but -

She loves Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Despite everything.

She loves Anakin too, which is the important bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Happy Anakin!)

It's the most important part. (Elesse still loves her and wants to keep her so Anakin can't have fucked up too much.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm. They'll make it work.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Right now: meditation and preparation for Elesse, and just... Unwinding for Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

And shortly before the fleet is due to drop out of hyperspace, Elesse sends out a quick flurry of orders which have the combined effect of clearing a path to the shuttlebay, ensuring one is unattended long enough, and that the doors are permitted to open long enough for their chosen craft to streak out and execute a brief Force-guided series of microjumps to shake off pursuit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is really helpful for that - her sensitivity to the Force is a lot higher than it was when she was a padawan. Higher than the vast, vast majority of full Masters - possibly higher than anyone alive, though that's harder to figure.

Permalink Mark Unread

They may need to do some more training to help her adjust.

If Anakin's willing.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Maybe in a little bit.

Touching the Force feels weird right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse would expect so. Does Anakin think she can take over flying for a while?

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is going to go take some time to try to sort out her feelings, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright.

Permalink Mark Unread

And of feelings, Elesse has... rather a lot. Start with the guilt and the shame that her padawan killed herself, and the hurt that Elesse feels because of that. Add more guilt because Elesse contributed to Anakin's problems, by ignoring her, by not making time for her. She was busy, busy running the war. Time that she didn't spend on talking to Anakin was time spent on making sure her troops had a better chance of survival. Add up all their lives on one side, and Anakin's on the other, and then all the Separatist armies that she was fighting and... Where does the scale end up? If she was able to go back and choose again, would she do the same thing? She wouldn't, she thinks. Not at the cost of Anakin's life.

Looking at in from the perspective of the Jedi Code, did Elesse make the right choice? The many lives, the peace the Republic promised. (The looming darkness Anakin hinted at.) Would she be permitted to choose otherwise, if she could go back? Would she even want to. What is one life, against all the galaxy?

It's been a long, long time since Elesse has had to confront this sort of turmoil in her soul. It scares her.

Permalink Mark Unread

They come out of their series of hyperspace jumps eventually, at a planet Anakin feels will be a good place to scrap their shuttle and swap it out for something less... Clearly Republic.

It has traffic control, though, and she thinks it has specifically very lazy traffic control, but... Someone with a working mouth still will need to talk to the officer.

"Elesse," she calls, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse does not want to come out of meditation and face Anakin the world.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elesse? I need you to talk to traffic control."

Permalink Mark Unread

She comes to with a flinch. Anakin is dead. Anakin needs her. Anakin is dead. Anakin is talking to her because Anakin needs her. Anakin is dead because Elesse failed her and Anakin needs her.

Elesse's breathing is rapid and short. "I- I can't-"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Elesse?!"

She does not know how to deal with Elesse having a panic attack! ...And also someone needs to do something soon or else traffic control will get suspicious.

Anakin mentally flails a little bit and then flows into Eleese's body, gently nudging her back - it's almost instinctive, really. Anakin does this a lot for soldiers with battle fatigue. Anyone freaking out on their first deployment, or about seeing their sisters torn apart. When a moving body is needed, but... It matters a bit less than normal who's controlling that body.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse can continue having a panic attack in the back of her brain while Anakin gets the body itself under control, sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Mental hug? Or - Anakin can leave her alone to process.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs are good. Right now, hugs are good.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll wrap Elesse up in a warm blanket of fuzzy feelings, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is nice. Cozy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

(And - Anakin likes using Elesse's body for things. It's all the nice parts of having a body without all the horrible parts, and she likes feeling Elesse in her mind. Being able to wrap cozily around her like this.)

She'll get them through traffic control and then landed with no trouble, then sets out for the tasks that'll make it easier to keep evading pursuit - new, less distinctive clothes... A small blaster... Then arranging to sell the shuttle no questions asked... Buying a ship... Acquiring some supplies, too, beyond what Elesse took with her. Especially things that won't stand out if they use them in public.

And... She's really tempted to acquire some nice things, too. Good food. Soft pillows. But it's Elesse's credits, and she'll be the main one using things...

Permalink Mark Unread

Credits are meant for spending. They should buy what they can here, Elesse thinks, and acquire more later if necessary.

Permalink Mark Unread

A reasonable selection of good food and soft pillows (...and a pretty bracelet, and some nice smelling soap) it is, then.

(Soft pillows are so soft. Best texture.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Anakin intend to stick around to enjoy them for a while? (Elesse's tone of thought is lightly teasing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, she'll bring them back to the ship, but -

If she sticks around in Elesse's body to rub her face on the pillows... That depends on Elesse, really? (Anakin is... Aware she's bad at asking for or caring about consent. But she doesn't want to do things Elesse wouldn't like.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse doesn't mind. She finds it... comforting, in some ways, to have Anakin be driving her body like this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin likes controlling Elesse's body, which works out - a lot more than she'd expected to, actually, she... Hadn't really enjoyed doing this in the war.

Permalink Mark Unread

The circumstances are... somewhat different, she expects.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Very different. In a lot of ways.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mental hugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle! (Warm glow - she adores Elesse.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(That is such a nice feeling to experience.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she's going to adore Elesse even harder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, a virtuous circle.

Permalink Mark Unread

The best kind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Though they shouldn't stay on this planet too long, Elesse thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

No - but she can snuggle in hyperspace, too...

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds like a plan, padawan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, then.

(...Not Thinking about things is weirdly both - harder and easier like this. Easier not to dwell, certainly, but harder to just... Keep her thoughts on track.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want to talk at all?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Maybe. If Elesse thinks she's ready.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Possibly she will need a little more time in meditation.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not sure if she can do that while Anakin's running the body...

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin can step out? Or they can keep cuddling and trying not to think about certain things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe just a little more cuddling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds excellent to her.

(...Something maybe safe to think about: where do they want to go, other than 'away'?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Most of the places Elesse knows are Jedi-related in some fashion. Although...

There's always Maz.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maz?

Permalink Mark Unread

Maz Kanata. An old friend. Runs a bar that's quite famous in certain underworld circles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's never mentioned her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Surely Anakin doesn't believe that time Elesse ended up in a Hutt prison was by accident?

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay, now she's gotta hear this story. Sounds like Maz might be (the good kind of) a bad influence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maz's bar (more accurate to call it a castle, really) is known as neutral ground for the underworld. As long as you don't start trouble, you can drink, rest, and hold meetings in peace knowing that if anyone else starts trouble, the full wrath of the most infamous pirate queen since the Ruusan reformations will be brought to bear. Maz is, therefore, well-positioned to keep tabs on the pulse of galactic criminality, and knows just about everyone there is to know. The only major faction not welcome at all is the Hutts. Maz has a bit of a grudge against the Hutts, and is not above passing information and facilitating connections that will cause trouble for the Hutts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hence her friendship with Elesse?

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse inherited the contact from Yoda, in fact. Friendship may be stretching the term- Elesse did end up in prison based on the last tip, after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

And met Anakin, which makes it the best tip ever.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh. Elesse supposes so.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll have to thank her.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can, if she'd like to.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Elesse thinks it's safe to tell her about Anakin still existing.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's entirely possible Maz will guess on her own. She has a certain sensitivity.

Permalink Mark Unread

But - is she safe?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of all the people they could share with... Maz isn't a bad choice. Elesse was thinking of asking for help with scrubbing her identity, which is a point of vulnerability anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

...There's someone Anakin wants to contact, too, and that'll be hard to do subtly without help.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can look into that as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Especially if Maz might be willing to help - this... Isn't something she wants more people than necessary to even suspect about.

Permalink Mark Unread

Discretion is not a service Maz is unfamiliar with, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

What's the best path to her? (Anakin can fly it while Elesse meditates a little?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse can provide the planet's coordinates.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thanks.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she steps out of Elesse's body.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes her a second to adjust to being in control of her own body again.

"I'll be in the cabin then, if you need me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I'll be able to just hear you through the bond if you need me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully I won't wake up screaming again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Yeah." That had been. Bad.

Permalink Mark Unread

And on that note... Elesse is going to try again to sort herself out.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Anakin's going to work on getting the ship to Takodana.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse, when she emerges from meditation some hours later, is feeling much better.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Meditation go well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It did, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile! "Good." Wow wanting to merge into Elesse's brain to see what she's thinking now and deny her all mental privacy is a very awkward urge to be having.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not done, I think, but I see the start of a path."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I - still don't. Not one for me." She's been instead pretty aggressively avoiding thinking about certain topics. It's - refreshingly a lot easier than it used to be.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you need anything, Anakin, anything at all..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't - know what you can provide." What Elesse would be actually willing to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever you need."

Permalink Mark Unread

She stares at Elesse, overwhelmed - by the offer, and by the enormous task of evaluating if it's true. (Not just if Elesse means it - if there's things she hasn't thought of that she wouldn't try to provide - but if Elesse would. Be able to. Because Anakin is... Pretty sure Elesse can't actually do everything Anakin needs. Let alone everything Anakin wants. And she doesn't know how to even start defining what she needs.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"And if it's anything I can't do personally, I will find whoever or whatever can."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How do you know you mean it?" she asks, hesitantly, quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The path I mentioned. This is it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doing - whatever I want?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever you need me to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Where's the line between need and want, here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think," Elesse says, "that is something that we will need to work on together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's - a lot of stuff I want. But I'm not... Really sure what I need."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can work on that. In the meantime... you can always, always ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I want to talk about what happened. I - think I might need that. But... Once I start thinking about it, it'll be hard to stop, so - I want to talk about everything. If you're - ready."

She should've asked Elesse for something sexual, that'd be petty and fraught but less scary.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

"I - I don't know where to start..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neither do I."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I could possess you and then - think about that - and you could. I guess follow things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you would like to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so..." And she steps into Elesse - her head is a scattered mess right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe Elesse's calm can help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. It does. A lot.

She needs it, because - even without her body screaming at her all the time, even without her mind eating itself, even without the insistent voices berating her - even having left the military - even having Elesse's attention back -

A lot of the reasons she killed herself still exist, and the reasons that don't still exist - left scars. Pretty deep ones.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she tell Elesse about some of those scars?

Permalink Mark Unread

...She didn't have any friends, after she became Elesse's padawan. No one to turn to, no one to rely on, no one to care about except Elesse - she didn't see any of her friends from before ever again, and none of the other children liked her, and they were always on the move, and the Jedi discouraged attachments -

And Anakin was so, so tired of having hostages against her. And some things - many things were too raw, too vulnerable, to talk to Elesse about. Not without processing them first, but... She didn't know how to do that from inside her own head.

(She made a friend, after her knighting - she's not entirely sure how, actually. Senator Breha Organa is... Quiet, and Anakin wasn't nonverbal yet but was still... Incredibly socially awkward with no idea how making friends works. And she did speak to Breha some, but... For some reason, she felt pressed to keep the friendship secret. Hidden from everyone. And there's - some of the still existing hurts, a bit too raw to poke directly, tied up with exactly how much she trusts and will confide in her friend.) (That thought is a faint tangent, but Elesse can pick up on it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is sorry she neglected Anakin in this way.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She isn't sure how much that helps. The problem is still - there.

That's... Probably actually a problem that still exists. Not just a scar.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's... something Elesse herself struggles with. She doesn't have many people she's close with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Anakin doesn't know how to fix it, especially not - now.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's possible they can try to... find some sort of community somewhere. Anakin can use Elesse's face to be a participant...

Permalink Mark Unread

...Maybe.

And Maz might be able to help.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd probably suggest they join a smuggler's ring.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'd be a change of pace if nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin did just get them this very nicely anonymous ship. Not exactly a freighter, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can see about trading up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse feels entirely comfortable trusting Anakin's judgement on what makes a good ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smart of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Don't say she hasn't learned at least one thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin hopes she's taught Elesse more than just one thing...

Permalink Mark Unread

That would be nice to think.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she think so?

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps... A certain approach to life, to finding joy in small things. Something Elesse does not practice as much as she might.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is! And so is Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a pair they make.

Permalink Mark Unread

The best kind of pair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm. It's... very good to have Anakin back.

Elesse had missed her more than she realized.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Yeah.

Anakin had missed Elesse like - like everything was gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

She hadn't even noticed amidst... everything else. Until it was almost too late.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Oh.

Did - did she think about Anakin at all?

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin - pulls back, almost. Her side of the bond grows quiet, and her expression goes distant and hard to read.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm sorry.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Okay.'

'...I want to exist right now and want to keep trying to - want to exist but - I think I might need - a possibility of the option to. Just. Stop. If I - someday can't keep trying.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'If that is what you need, I will support you.'

'I love you, Anakin.'

Permalink Mark Unread

- She steps into Elesse's body suddenly, curls up at the back of her mind with their bond blossoming open. (She's sad and scared and she loves Elesse and doesn't understand how Elesse can love her back when Anakin's so - broken and imperfect.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse opens up to Anakin like a warm embrace.

It's never been about- wholeness, or perfection. It's about people.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mind wraps around Elesse's like she wants to cling and never let go (and she starts vaguely wishing she had a separate body so she could kiss Elesse. (She loves Elesse in every way she knows how and has had a lot of - desires, urges, somethings - that she's never really come to grips with.))

Permalink Mark Unread

Many mental and emotional hugs for the Anakin.

(That's- flattering. And... intriguing. Elesse doesn't hate the idea.)

Permalink Mark Unread

...It'd be complicated, now. Though Anakin could use Elesse's body to kiss someone or tell Elesse who to kiss which is in some ways extra intriguing.

Permalink Mark Unread

It would be complicated. But now is when they are.

Permalink Mark Unread

She - wants to figure it out, if Elesse wants to.

Making Elesse Using Elesse's body to kiss someone else might be good for - other things, too. But it'd be less... Intimate.

Permalink Mark Unread

For the next little while, at least, it's just the two of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are there - things they could do alone? (...Anakin knows basically nothing about this.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse knows a couple tricks, knowledge which she will make available to Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!

She's a little torn between telling Elesse things to try so Anakin can watch, versus taking over Elesse's body and experimenting directly (with Elesse watching).

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse would be all right with either option.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnn she wants to take over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse takes a mental step back, inviting her to do so.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes over smoothly, then - do they have a mirror?

Permalink Mark Unread

They can configure one in the cabin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she wants to start with learning what Elesse looks like - and some physical explorations from there...

All while paying pretty rapt attention to Elesse's reactions in the back of her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmm. Elesse basks in Anakin's attentions.

She has a couple hints if Anakin wants. Or they could play a game of hot and cold if she'd rather experiment...

Permalink Mark Unread

Hot and cold, how about. (Anakin's basking in Elesse, and she wants to wring more reactions, and a wider variety of them.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Warm glow of amusement.

So far, then, Anakin's on the cool side of warm...

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll keep exploring - both physically and mentally. (She really enjoys praising Elesse.) (She also really enjoys the body's reaction to pain. Elesse might have a slightly different opinion about that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Praise is hot! Elesse likes Anakin's reaction to the reaction more than she dislikes the reaction, so pain is also very warm. (The body is Anakin's to do what she likes with.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she likes that thought. (Elesse is Anakin's, too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She is. All for Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll be sure to take an apprppriate amount of advantage.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which is to say every advantage?

Permalink Mark Unread

Naturally.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is perfect. Such a good girl for Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Little happy blush.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwww, cute. (Anakin adores her Elesse.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And Elesse loves Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

(This was a very good idea.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The most fun one can have in hyperspace, definitely.

Permalink Mark Unread

And there's more fun to be had outside of it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Other options, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Like what?

Permalink Mark Unread

Podracing, for example.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out at Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Laughter.

What did Anakin think she meant?

Permalink Mark Unread

Something a bit more relevant to what they're doing currently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, well, in that case...

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

There are certain tools they don't have access to, changes in scenery like a beach or a forest open new possible arrangements.

Not to mention what the addition of other bodies could do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmm, her Elesse has a lot of good ideas.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does have her moments, doesn't she?

Permalink Mark Unread

A lot of those, too!

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is too kind.

(Elesse takes back control of an arm so as to pat her on the head.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She breaks down giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

'You like that?' she teases.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I like it when you're a dork.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Laugh. 'Then I shall continue.'

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns and kisses the hand Elesse took over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, how sweet.

Permalink Mark Unread

'Love you, dork.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I love you too, padawan.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Warm cozy afterglow time?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes indeed.

At least until the journey's ending.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Probably Elesse should control the body while talking to Maz?

Permalink Mark Unread

That will be simplest, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin pulls back some, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Elesse will secure them a landing spot, then it's off to the bar.

Which is more like a castle, really, bustling and busy with banners displaying the symbols of all sorts of syndicates, gangs, and mercenary organizations flapping over the courtyard.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's really interestingly busy! Anakin is having fun looking at everything - and is also apparently totally invisible to everyone here.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a brief adjustment for Elesse to be the only one present and in charge of interacting with people, but in short order she gets set up at the bar with a drink. Then they're just waiting to be noticed, which shouldn't take long.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maz makes her way back to the main room and over to Elesse in fairly short order, hopping up next to her and saying, "I hadn't expected to see you back here," without much preamble.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Force sets us on strange paths sometimes," Elesse says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yours stranger than most, it seems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"From Jedi to general to out-of-work spacer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Amused huff. "You've changed a lot from that little girl tagging behind my old friend, dearie."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Such things are harder to notice from the inside..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Many things are. People and events alike."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you make of recent... events, Maz?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "A long discussion. Not one for the bar, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you still have those private rooms upstairs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do." She picks up her drink and hops down off her stool, before leading the way up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Upstairs it is. (It's a good sign Maz is willing to relocate, she thinks.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"So... You had questions for me?" she asks once they're alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

"More of a hope for assistance, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her gaze cuts over to where Anakin is hovering quietly. "You have your work cut out for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least now I know it is front of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't fight the Republic for you - but I can help you all the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're... not looking to jump back into a war."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd hope not - but the war might come for you anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps. It would be nice to find some peace before it does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That I can help with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Maz."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want a place to stay, a ship, and some work, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be the short of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - And people for me to talk to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most won't see you," she says, almost gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can use Elesse's body. So just - I want to be around people who won't. Notice or care who she is."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Entirely doable - that's why I built this little bar."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll let us return?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes - if you don't break bar rules."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we can manage that much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you'll keep being welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

"What sort of ship do you have for us, and what sort of work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She has a variety of leads for them to pick from...

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will certainly defer to Anakin's judgement on the final choice, but she has a good feeling about that light freighter...

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh that freighter has potential - she's got plenty of room for after market editions, and the things Anakin could do to that engine...

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds like true love.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which means Elesse will get her for Anakin, since Elesse's in true love with Anakin?

Permalink Mark Unread

Naturally.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. That sure makes Elesse feel a way.

Permalink Mark Unread

A good way?

Permalink Mark Unread

A good way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug Anakin!

They can explore that more once Elesse gets their new ship...

Permalink Mark Unread

Is that a hint to get a move on?

Permalink Mark Unread

A bit stronger than a hint.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh my.

As she commands.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very good girl. (Anakin is excited about Elesse's reaction to that...)

Permalink Mark Unread

She is going to contain herself until they have some privacy again.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Hmmm...

Even with Anakin thinking naughty things at her?

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is a Jedi Master and she has more control over herself than that.

She will, however, be sure to wrap up the details of the ship and their first cargo very quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin wants to test that self control, now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Evil little gremlin that she is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bold words, when Elesse's the one who introduced her to sex. Really, Anakin's doing her a favor. Providing her with what she was clearly asking for...

Permalink Mark Unread

And enjoying it far too much.

(Elesse loves her for it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

If Anakin's enjoying it too much, then what about Elesse?

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is enjoying the exact right amount, thank you very much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, if Elesse properly enjoys it when Anakin's mean to her, then it's a bit silly to claim that Anakin enjoys giving Elesse what she wants too much.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's nothing wrong with being a bit silly with your loved ones from time to time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then nothing wrong with Anakin being silly by trying to make Elesse lose her composure in public.

Permalink Mark Unread

Flawless logic. Well played, padawan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug!

(Speaking of... Some of those thoughts Elesse'd had at her earlier about potential tools to help with their fun times could be relevant to those efforts...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Something that could be remotely controlled, perhaps?

Permalink Mark Unread

By someone with the Force, if nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

That should be reasonably easy to arrange.

Permalink Mark Unread

Before or after celebrating their new ship?

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, definitely after.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse doesn't want to delay celebrations?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not even a little bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Impatient.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse has been extremely patient up until now. Now she would like to stop being patient.

Permalink Mark Unread

A good girl like her does deserve to be rewarded.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, please.

Permalink Mark Unread

Polite, too...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anakin Skywalker, you get in me right now or stars help me-"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs -

Permalink Mark Unread

- And takes over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Finally.

Permalink Mark Unread

Finally indeed.

(Anakin had been only barely clinging to her patience - she's eager, and delighted, and has so many ideas - and Elesse is such a perfect girl - )

Permalink Mark Unread

The release is much appreciated by both of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Made sweeter by the anticipation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed. Elesse is very pleased that theory bears out in practice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm same.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute and intelligent and bossy and overall delightful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Preen!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Wonderful girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

A good match for her wonderful Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect in every respect.

She wants to hear what plans Anakin has for their ship, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

So many!!! ...Though they're probably going to have to do a few jobs first for the more ambitious ones. Though she can probably cheat a little with the Force...

(Fortunately, since Elesse can read Anakin's mind, what follows isn't just incomprehensible technobabble.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse has learned a little, managing army logistics. Anakin is still far above her level.

She listens with rapt attention.

Permalink Mark Unread

Somehow that gets even more preening out of her!

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a good look on her.

Permalink Mark Unread

On Elesse, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a good thing Anakin is using Elesse's face for it, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin's pretty sure this is her body now, which means it's her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a compelling argument.

Permalink Mark Unread

No contest to this body belonging to Anakin?

Permalink Mark Unread

It seems only fair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse does belong to Anakin too, so...

Permalink Mark Unread

A fine application of the property of transitivity.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's taught her well.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Anakin is a stellar student.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's done her best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which is more than good enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!! <333

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse loves Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Anakin loves Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their new career is off to an auspicious start.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though... Anakin has someone to contact, before - they get started in full on their new career.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who is that?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Anakin doesn't know if Elesse ever worked with her, but - Senator Breha Organa.

(...This is tied up in all the things she wasn't thinking about. The mood whiplash is... Unpleasant. But probably necessary.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Comforting mental hugs. She has Elesse's support for thinking about this.

Her impression of Senator Organa has always been that of a good, reasonable person.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is. Which is why Anakin had trusted her with - this.

...Anakin should explain - this - to Elesse before talking to Breha about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pat pat. When she's ready.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't think she's going to get any readier. But... She thinks she'd prefer it if Elesse was the one in charge of the body, right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. (Mental snuggles.)

Permalink Mark Unread

So Anakin had mentioned that Senator Organa was a friend?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Has been since shortly after the start of the war. She's just... A really calm, reliable person? And really dedicated to her planet and the Republic. Anakin likes her and trusts her a lot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Trusts her with... secrets?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Yeah. Big secrets.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

So the big thing Anakin's been avoiding thinking about - the thing she only told Breha about, out of everyone, and that only at the very end -

She was -

Anakin was pregnant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't remember how.

Permalink Mark Unread

So many hugs for Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hugs good.

And the thing she trusted Breha with - she gave birth, just before she - just before she killed herself. She'd arranged the beginning of her leave for that. And she had twins.

She gave them to Breha to - keep safe. Hidden.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, Anakin.

Does she want to get them back?

Permalink Mark Unread

...She doesn't know.

She wants to raise them. Desperately. But - she doesn't know if that'd be kind to them. If Breha or whoever she chooses wouldn't be a better mother.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks- it would be good to establish contact, at least. They're not really set up for babies, with this ship. If Anakin wants, they could make the arrangements, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

She -

- If it's a good idea, she wants it. She doesn't know if it's a good idea. If they can even risk trying.

Permalink Mark Unread

There will be ways, precautions they can take. They'll have to feel out how things are going, back in the Republic, but they can make a plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

She just -

Kids are so, so easy to hurt. And Anakin is really fucked up as a person.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, this is important to get right. Just- when they're thinking, making decisions, Elesse thinks they should keep the perspective that they can get this right. That it is possible for them to take this challenge and meet it successfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's - Anakin's not sure if that's the perspective she needs, right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then what is it she needs?

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't know. It's -

- She's broken. And it sucks being broken, being fucked up, being unable to just - be better. To just do the things Elesse's thinking of. And Anakin -

There's a big gaping hole in her where her ability to love herself should go. To forgive herself. And she killed herself, recently, and she did it for a reason, and she's not suicidal right now but -

She doesn't think she can raise her children correctly, and she - it's very easy to feel that if she's a fuck up then she might as well stop existing. And thinking about - everything required to do things correctly, perfectly, and how she probably can't is -

Difficult. It's really, really difficult to handle, to wrap her head around, especially knowing that if she fucks up it won't be just her and Elesse she'll hurt, and - being correct is so hard and she's been failing at it all her life -

- And she's still not sure she won't decide to stop existing. She still wants to - needs to - have that as an option. And she shouldn't raise her children if - if she's just going to kill herself again. And -

Having very good reasons not to kill herself, having people she cares about relying on her staying alive, relying on her being functional, made it so much worse.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can just- be. She doesn't have to fix herself, she doesn't have to be perfect. Doesn't have to be forever or in the future or anywhere beyond here and now.

The Anakin of the here-and-now is the one that Elesse loves, is the one that Elesse has always loved.

Permalink Mark Unread

She - burrows, almost, into Elesse's mind, wraps herself in Elesse's love and in the truth of that love - tries to reach for how Elesse sees her -

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse sees someone who is struggling, who is reaching, who might be cracked and broken but is nevertheless filled with a brilliant light, something that spills out and illuminates everything it touches. Someone who, even in her darkest moments, wanted to do the best thing for her children, who found a way that they could still be safe, be happy, be loved.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnnnnn.

Anakin loves her so much. It - it almost hurts to be wrapped in this much love, this much regard. Like light pouring into all her broken places.

(It's a good thing Anakin's a bit of a masochist, then, because she doesn't want to stop feeling this light.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She loves Anakin.

Anakin can take as much time as she needs to heal, or to decide she's- she's not going to, and either way the children will be fine with Breha, and Elesse and Anakin can be in their lives in the way that fits for everyone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggles.

Breha would be a good mom, Anakin thinks.

(And, quieter, in the background - Anakin doesn't want Elesse to be sad. She's not planning to leave Elesse alone.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse doesn't want to be alone. Not again.

Permalink Mark Unread

The thought feels almost - selfish - but -

- Anakin would want to take Elesse with her, she thinks. If she ever did decide to fully kill herself. She wants Elesse to be always beside her. And Elesse's hers to do whatever she wants with.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's...

She might be all right with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Warm, clingy snuggles. (She loves Elesse, and it shines like light from her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

That makes her feel better. That whatever comes, it's from the place with the light.

Permalink Mark Unread

<3!

Permalink Mark Unread

Love you too, Anakin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm they need to plan contacting Breha but right now Anakin wants to just cuddle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair. They can do that for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once she's had a chance to get her equilibrium back -

She's unsure how to... Open her call with Breha.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Honesty might be best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. But -

Breha probably won't be able to see her. So probably Elesse's body will be the one talking, and - Anakin's unsure if she or Elesse should start the conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin knows her better than Elesse does.

They could arrange a text conversation, if that would be easier?

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks a full conversation would be better in - a couple ways. More secure, if nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse can begin the conversation, and Anakin can join in when she's ready?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Breha would probably notice it if Anakin was in control of the body, which might be helpful to - introducing the idea believably?

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm. Let her see that something's happened, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Whenever she's ready.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks - she wants to contact Breha sooner rather than later, even if Anakin isn't entirely ready yet. It'll - help, seeing her, and hearing how her twins are doing.

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds reasonable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Maybe - send a message through Maz, asking for a secure chat - there's some codes Anakin and Breha used to communicate, hopefully that'll get through to her...

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse will make it happen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thanks (warm glow of love).

Permalink Mark Unread

Whatever Anakin needs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her Elesse is such a good girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is her purpose.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she's excellent at achieving it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee.

Elesse will drop a line to Maz, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a message can be passed on, and a secure call set up.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Senator's busy, and the message source is a little suspect, but- The codes check out and she knows Anakin was... under considerable stress.

Breha's call comes through relatively soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's Elesse's face she sees when the call is answered - though not making an expression Breha would really associate with the High Councilor.

"Hello, Breha," she says, quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Master... Vendar? Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - This is Anakin, I'm - borrowing Elesse's body."

(That Anakin can see and speak through those she's battle meditating with is... More or less known, among the Senators most heavily involved in meddling with the war effort, at least if you go looking. It's often relevant. (It's been used a few times to argue against the citizenship or full sapience of the clones, that they're so easily overriden. People don't like to think that Anakin - that the Jedi - can just do something like that, if they want to, if they think it's necessary. Can just look at someone and say - 'I'll be using this now.' Arguing that clones are sapient without supporting arguments that Anakin is a terrifying monster can get a bit... Delicate.))

Permalink Mark Unread

"They told us you were dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - My original body is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - You don't need to be. I'm happier like this."

"Me and Elesse have left the Jedi, and... We don't want anyone else knowing I'm alive. We don't want to abandon the Republic, but - I don't think we were doing any good. That the war's doing any good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My fear... is that there may not be a Republic left to abandon for much longer."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Has something happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The last news cycle's opinion pieces were questioning the continued suitability of the Jedi to lead the war effort. Implications that they are cracking under the strain. Never mind who it was that forced the burden on them in the first place. More power devolved to the office of the Chancellor is the solution, naturally."

Permalink Mark Unread

Harsh breath out. "Because clearly the Chancellor can do no wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Chancellor's generals are the ones really winning the war, don't you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Disgusted noise. "Hard to think I used to like her..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Very hard.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will be retiring from the Senate soon, you should know."

Permalink Mark Unread

- Slow nod.

"To take up more of your duties as Heir Apparent?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Queen, soon enough. Mother is old. And keeps mentioning plans for her gardens..."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Are you - going to raise my girls yourself?" That hadn't directly been part of what Anakin had asked for - just that they be given to a good family, in secrecy if possible.

Permalink Mark Unread

"As soon as I get back home." Soft smile. "They're in hospital on Alderaan now, with the other refugee orphans we are taking care of."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! "I'm glad. You're going to be a great mom." And, almost hesitantly: "They're doing okay?" (...Anakin wasn't getting prenatal check ups and doesn't know how long she was pregnant, but they were so small, and looked so thin, and she'd had so much trouble getting her little Leia warm enough...)

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're fighters. Both doing well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad."

"And - if it won't be too complicated to do securely - I'd like to - see them. Be part of their lives, at least occasionally..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The eccentric spacer aunt?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The one bringing back exotic presents and stranger stories, making them sigh about how much more fun being a pirate is than doing their homework."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have to make special arrangements with palace security about allowing that sort of bad influence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A longing for adventure is good for growing girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Instills a curiosity about the lives of other peoples."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Vital for a well-rounded representative of Alderaan's people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of the many valuable lessons I'll teach."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin.

" - I want to see you again, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That will be part of seeing the girls."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So no split custody drop offs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Not until they're older, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd rather spend the time with you, too. At least for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That works out well, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile!

"...Thank you. For - looking out for them. For being a good friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything I can do to help you out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"At the moment? Just stay safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll do our best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know you will. Was there anything else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

' - Elesse? Can you think of anything?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'No. I think this went very well for a first conversation.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Alright.'

To Breha: "Not that I needed, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we'll speak later. Goodbye, Anakin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Until next time, Breha."

Permalink Mark Unread

And she signs off.

Permalink Mark Unread

'That went well.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It did.' Warm glow. 'I'm proud of you, Anakin.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee!!! Wiggle!

'I did well?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You did excellently.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Warm glow! (She hadn't really been thinking of it as a challenge once she got to talking - just... Things she wanted. She wants to know what Elesse saw.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She saw an outgoing young woman cementing friendships and allies easily and naturally.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww! (More wiggles!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy Anakin, happy Elesse.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a bit of a positive feedback loop, since Anakin gets happier when Elesse is happy...

Permalink Mark Unread

Imagine that. (Laughter.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Lovely girl.

About time to begin their new career, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like it to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then at the captain's command.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can start by acquiring an appropriate scoundrel outfit...

Permalink Mark Unread

And what does one of those involve, Elesse wonders.

Permalink Mark Unread

A somewhat loose shirt, with a neckline that runs a little low in the front. Sturdy, well-fitted pants. Holsters and utility pockets of some kind. And definitely a leather jacket.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, so cleavage and hips is what it's about.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rough aesthetic and the bad girl vibes matter, too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse might need Anakin to give her some pointers on properly pulling that off. She's always been the good girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd be delighted to help. Some dark colors - but not too dark, with hints of rich vibrant color - will complement Elesse's complexion well...

Permalink Mark Unread

That does sound appealing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very attractive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully Anakin will enjoy wearing it as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh good. She wouldn't want anything to interfere with Anakin's possession.

Permalink Mark Unread

Being sexy never could.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeeeeee.

Permalink Mark Unread

And so, properly dressed for the spacer's lifestyle...

Permalink Mark Unread

Let them be off.

Their first set of jobs are mostly benign, smuggling black market goods across battle lines to settlements on the wrong side of Trade Federation embargoes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something she excels at - and a role she thrives in. She's always liked helping people directly, where she can see the immediate impact of her actions...

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is pleased this works for her.

(She is also pleased to let Anakin take charge as much as she wants, acting whenever and however directed.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't always interested in leading, let alone in having the body - but she does enjoy stepping forward, and she enjoys giving Elesse general guidelines to follow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

And of course, they have plenty of time alone in hyperspace to play.

Permalink Mark Unread

Almost as if it was planned.

Permalink Mark Unread

Funny how that works out, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

And of course, when they have breaks between runs at Maz's place... Anakin has the chance to make some friends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Something she's very out of practice at - her early attempts involve sitting awkwardly at the bar and trying to look cute and approachable while at the same time not being too approachable by creeps. This is... A delicate balance to strike, and one she's not entirely successful at. (She is, however, very good at scaring off creeps.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, if it's only creeps that get scared off...

"Hey there. I like your jacket." The woman who approaches her is a little younger than Elesse, and, unusually, is wearing a belted dress in dark blue synthsilk with a skirt just long enough to swish, rather than the more typical tunic and pants combination.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely not the cute girls in interesting outfits.

"Thanks - it's my favorite. And I like your dress," she says, not entirely hiding how her gaze darts to the woman's legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's my favorite too!" She laughs. "Can I buy you a drink, in celebration of nice clothes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright." She has a very pretty laugh...

(...Anakin miiight want to kiss her...)

Permalink Mark Unread

She wouldn't object.

She beckons the bartender for two drinks. "So what's your name, oh fashionable one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call me Fantosme. And you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ceru. Nice to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The pleasure is mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

It sure could be.

"I don't think I've seen you around before..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't been here since I was small - my grandfather was a regular, way back when. I'm starting to figure out why."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The fine company?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And the interesting stories."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you asking for mine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it's on offer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For an appropriately appreciative audience, it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be very appreciative."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then prepare to be amazed."

Ceru comes from a good Corellian family, apparently, but she liked flying more than society parties so she left home just shy of the age of majority and joined a merchant freighter. Then they got ambushed by pirates and Ceru had to escape from the pirate base, which she did by conning one of them into calling the sector patrol and stealing one of their ships in the ensuing chaos.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fantosme does, in fact, find her account rather fascinating! And she definitely likes and appreciates clever, resourceful girls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though Ceru might want more direct evidence of her appreciation...

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe not in the main bar area...

Permalink Mark Unread

She's alright retreating to somewhere more private.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ceru would like to see her ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's an exceptionally lovely ship, with a lot of custom work - Fantosme is more than happy to show her off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you fly her solo? Impressive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a talented woman."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's she named?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Millennium Nexuha." She'd only slightly renamed the ship.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! "Oh, I like that name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I picked it myself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good taste. My girl's the Stareyed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems our good taste matches."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You bet it does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In more ways than one."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ceru leans over invitingly. "Wanna prove it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans in as well, stepping closer to Ceru until she's looming over the younger woman a little. "With pleasure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!!

(Ceru is probably better at this than her, but Fantosme isn't letting that stop her.)

Permalink Mark Unread

As well she shouldn't. Practice is the only way to improve.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Fantosme has ever been a diligent student.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a stroke of luck.

Permalink Mark Unread

For Ceru, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed, indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

(Mmm this is a very good use for a body.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse is glad Anakin is having fun with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Elesse's pleasure only increases her own.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow, Ceru's better at this than she thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fantosme definitely approves of her skills.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent!

Permalink Mark Unread

And she's learning pretty quickly how to return the favor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully she doesn't have anywhere to be, because this might turn into an all-night affair.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's perfectly alright with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Goooood.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent, even.

Permalink Mark Unread

It isssss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ceru will have a very happy Fantosme on her hands by the time morning comes - though not a particularly tired one.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, that's a little awkward, as Ceru is getting tired.

Permalink Mark Unread

Depends on if she minds sitting back, relaxing, and letting Fantosme do all the work...

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, well in that case...

Permalink Mark Unread

An excellent compromise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmm.

And then Ceru's communicator beeps.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Hm?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. That'd be my first mate, probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably important?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably reminding me we do technically have a schedule."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A pity..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can leave you my number at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Ceru will scribble it down somewhere for her.

...And then begin the hunt for her clothes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She helps. A little. (And gives Ceru her own number.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Much appreciated. Maybe next time Ria will deign to introduce herself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll look forward to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Goodbye kiss for luck?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"See you soon, hopefully. Try not to get caught up in any blockades."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bye, then!"

And she'll take her leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she'll flop contentedly.

'That was fun.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It was.' Small laugh. 'Even vicariously.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Warm glow. 'You like watching?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I like watching you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Voyeur.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I will admit to that.'

'But I think you enjoy it too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm apparently an exhibitionist.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'It's good to know yourself.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Though I might only want you watching.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Hmm. That seems acceptable.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Unsurprisingly.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You know me so well, padawan.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I like to know my possessions.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I am overjoyed to be numbered among those.'

Permalink Mark Unread

<3!

Permalink Mark Unread

<3333!

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmmm lying here drifting in a haze of how much she and Elesse love each other is very nice. Good thing they don't have anywhere to be just yet...

Permalink Mark Unread

The perks of setting their own schedule.

Permalink Mark Unread

And being their own first mate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Still, the galaxy waits for no being, and with or without them, it will spin on...

Permalink Mark Unread

And in amongst that spinning is the war. Even as peripheral as Elesse and Anakin are, news of it is hard to escape. It grinds onwards, crushing fringe worlds to dust and sapping away the will of Republic citizens to resist the offers dangled in front of them to trade away their freedoms for the promise that the war will end sooner. Military checkpoints, blockades, tariffs, production quotas, centrally-appointed sector governors, bounties for informing on your neighbors... (And from an outsider perspective, stepping back and squinting- one might almost predict the paths the front lines take by how willing the various systems are to bow to the dictates of the Chancellor's office.)

Media coverage of the Jedi grows increasingly unfavorable. Starting as the opinions of marginal commentators and professional contrarians, the ever-growing cost and duration of the war is painted as the fault of its generals. Whether through indifference, incompetence, or (this whisper creeps slowly, insidiouly) malice, the Jedi will not bring an end to the war. They lack the will to fight the battles, to make the necessary sacrifices. They enjoy the power, the command, the ability to stomp on everything in their way and will not give it up. They just don't care about the common people, lost in meaningless religious dreams and irrational witch hunts for mythological enemies. All these theories and more are espoused. No matter who you are, there's some theory that will pander to your preconceptions to convince you the Jedi are in the wrong.

And then one night, several months later, the Force convulses in shock and sudden pain.

Permalink Mark Unread

- What?!?!

She reaches out, half on instinct -

Permalink Mark Unread

Death, betrayal, dispassion-

Good soldiers follow orders.

Permalink Mark Unread

It echoes through her -

Permalink Mark Unread

- And she rises to meet it, furious - hurt - a gaping hole is being ripped in her, in the Force -

She leaves Elesse behind, Elesse's body, except for a small tendril of her awareness - an overwhelming light - wrapped around her protectively, buffering her and at the same time very loosely anchoring Anakin to somewhere -

Permalink Mark Unread

And she reaches for the painfully familiar minds of her girls, of every soldier who's ever served under her - most of them are even still alive -

Permalink Mark Unread

But there's nothing in those familiar minds for her to grab. No watchfulness for her to nudge, no courage for her to flame.

Just the mission, and their orders, and the traitors before their weapons -

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is bigger than herself. Bigger than anything. As big as every mind she steps into, spreading rapidly from the familiar ones to their sisters, rendered eerily similar -

There's nothing for her to grab in them. But she is them, anyways, she's every mind she touches, and she's every fragment of their thoughts that isn't swamped by that horrid echo, she's every burning ember in the Force -

Permalink Mark Unread

Once, she might've needed the Dark Side for this. Might've needed to abandon everything she's clung to.

That was before she killed herself. Before she learned how to become someone else. Before she realized what another's true submission means.

And it's not just her girls who trust her,  who she owns. It's Elesse's, because Elesse's hers and so too is everything Elesse owns -

And Elesse commanded more people than her, even if at a remove.

And Anakin, now -

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is not a good soldier, and she doesn't fucking care about orders.

She lowers every weapon she holds in sync, a number of weapons that would be impossible to wrap her head around if she didn't have the same number of heads. And she looks at the Jedi she's followed, that she's fought alongside, trusted or resented or loved or hated - she looks at those who have already died of trusting her, and at those who yet live -

And every mouth thunders, "Run."

(Because there are far more soldiers in the army than her. Because something is rotten here. Because she never would have done this without a command clawing at her soul.)

(Because she's not the only one fighting, here.)

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a dark wellspring of power at the center of the Republic, its shadowy tendrils wrapped tightly around the Jedi Temple. Anakin has the most trouble existing there, despite owning a lot of the bodies stationed near or on Coruscant -

A deep wellspring that has been doing this for far longer than her, which winds through backdoors in Anakin's self perception, makes her stumble, slow down - turns the bodies it controls against hers -

Permalink Mark Unread

Fuck OFF.

Permalink Mark Unread

The dark tendrils laugh.

This is an impressive success. I see your death has done wonders for you.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fear -

That she spins as quickly as she can into determination - she doesn't want to plunge into the ocean of the dark side while also being Elesse -

Permalink Mark Unread

You won't defeat me by clinging to tedious notions of morality, girl. To ignorant divisions of the Force into 'light' or 'dark', allowed or taboo.

The Force convulses, and scores of Jedi die at the hands of bodies Anakin hasn't yet taken. Even the ones she's now sheltering falter, confused, their prescience clouded.

That dark shadow spreads, and good soldiers march on the Temple.

Permalink Mark Unread

How dare she -

Elesse was High Councilor - that is the Temple that sheltered them, numerous memories together, Anakin's first true home -

That is the Temple she died in, where her body still lays in repose in a cold rack, with no allowance for a funeral in a war that claims an uncountable tragedy of death every day -

That shadow has greater sway over most of her bodies in Coruscant, but there's one that's always belonged to her, that others have tried to chain and fallen for their hubris -

Deep in the Temple, the cold body of Anakin Skywalker opens its eyes, and Anakin grabs an anchor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most fascinating, the shadow purrs, terrible delight oozing from where it brushes against Anakin's very being. But you'll need to try harder.

Stop trying to trick the world, and demand what you want.

Permalink Mark Unread

How about you fuck off into a black hole?

Permalink Mark Unread

Do you really think that would stop someone like us?

Permalink Mark Unread

Anger -

I'm nothing like you.

Permalink Mark Unread

But you are.

And you will never escape me.

(And in a flicker Anakin glimpses/ feels/ hears/ knows one of the tendrils reaching not for the soldiers she is but for a different body - for whoever Anakin is shielding, smothering so carefully and absolutely - )

Permalink Mark Unread

- Fear -

She shoves the tendrils, wraps her blinding light like vicious teeth around them, holds on and doesn't let them keep advancing -

Permalink Mark Unread

But darkness isn't something you can hold back, and the tendrils have stopped but the shadow -

The shadow is bleeding from the light, from her, and it isn't the bodies she owns that her enemy is trying to become -

It's her, and that darkness is reaching in through her widening cracks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She snarls - reaches - tries to go on the offensive -

Permalink Mark Unread

- And recognizes the amused signature of the one she's fighting.

Permalink Mark Unread

- What -

She falters for a critical moment -

Permalink Mark Unread

You already know you won't win.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not over yet.

- And she recenters herself, forcefully. Curls tighter around Elesse - tries to remind herself why she's doing this, why she's suffering -

And reaches through her cold Temple body again, fully, searches out in the area around it, wielding the Force -

And touching minds, ones she curls around as she's curling around Elesse. Scared minds. Confused minds. Betrayed minds.

Minds who have been taught their whole life to listen to the Force, many of whom aren't old enough yet to realize the risks - minds who feel her impossibly large presence -

She's still clinging desperately to the light, and with the knowledge of Elesse's love - even with the dark shadow strangling her -

She's entirely possibly the lightest being here.

They've been taught to trust in the light side of the Force, and as she reaches into them they trust, helplessly, in her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Laughter, again, as the shadow races through her mind, to all those she wraps around - not Elesse, not yet, but she's close -

You're like a beacon, girl. You can't protect anyone when I can still see you.

There's an almost helpful nudge as she uses Anakin's own connection to kill several Jedi, those who'd trusted her the most recklessly. A hint on how to twist the Force just so, to hide herself and those she owns in loving, possessive shadow -

Permalink Mark Unread

- She feels herself teetering, the shock of that shadow just using her rippling through her entire being - fear, anger, indignation, they're mine I won't let you damage my possessions -

- Feels ripples of darkness echoing through her.

She loosens her hold, giving at least the Jedi back their minds -

Giving Elesse back her selfhood.

And, trying to be quiet - probably failing, because her enemy is in her own mind how didn't Anakin notice before -

Elesse. Elesse help me.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse's love slams down around her like a durasteel blast door, a cleansing fire racing through her veins and purifying the dark influence. A reminder of what Anakin fights for. Who she fights for. The soul-deep difference between her and the enemy.

Permalink Mark Unread

There you are.

Permalink Mark Unread

You.

Permalink Mark Unread

Me. And what of it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Why should I? Anakin darling and I were having such fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin is not your darling. You are torturing her. We reject your schemes, your influence, the death you have wrought upon the galaxy. Leave.

Elesse's defenses are solidifying further by the instant. She has made of herself an impenetrable wall to interpose between Anakin and the Sith.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her bond with Anakin - the scars she's left on Anakin's psyche - cannot be so easily dislodged. Cannot be erased by love alone.

I doubt she wishes to reject all of my influence.

Permalink Mark Unread

Your opinion is unasked for and unwanted.

Permalink Mark Unread

So Anakin doesn't appreciate the existence of her children?

Permalink Mark Unread

Do. Not. Speak. Of. Them.

Permalink Mark Unread

I intend to do more than speak of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are beyond your reach, forever.

Permalink Mark Unread

You'll find nothing is beyond my reach.

Permalink Mark Unread

I doubt that, Sith. A flash of teeth and hidden claws, the primal promise of the predator protecting her family.

Permalink Mark Unread

You didn't do such a good job of protecting Anakin before.

Permalink Mark Unread

Things change.

Permalink Mark Unread

The past does not. The ways you failed her do not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Don't think you can lecture me about failure.

Permalink Mark Unread

I haven't failed, dear. The Dark Side never will.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elesse declines to respond further, focusing only on blocking the slow creep of the Sith's influence as Anakin continues her work.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has more than one way of opposing them (and a keen instinct for how to dig at Elesse's rawest, most painful wounds) - but Elesse and Anakin can take away something - not victory, but a mitigation of loss, a thin gilding of hope like bright sun behind clouds.

Still, the dead fall like rain, and the fight was lost before it even began.

They won't save enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

More than none, nevertherless.

Permalink Mark Unread

Though the dead still hurt. Every person she fails still hurts.

But she can't keep doing this forever. Her mind is starting to stretch - thin, almost.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's done as much as she can. She has to let go. Find another way.

Permalink Mark Unread

But failing hurts.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does, Elesse knows. They've saved who they can know. All that's left is to preserve themselves so they can do more later.

Permalink Mark Unread

She -

She doesn't want to. But she'll retreat if Elesse does.

Permalink Mark Unread

She appreciates that.

Permalink Mark Unread

And so Anakin pulls back.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then curls up at the back of Elesse's mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

So many mental hugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

This sucks everything sucks death sucks she abandoned them but it was always a trap but she didn't see which she should've but no one saw the end coming no one realized the true nature of the trap and she failed -

Permalink Mark Unread

Anakin did more than anyone else to fight this. Anakin saved people.

Elesse and Anakin will continue to save people.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's -

Hard.

She never wanted to fight. Not really. Not like this.

It sucks that she still has to.

Permalink Mark Unread

It does.

She has all the support Elesse can provide.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's - a lot. And it matters for a lot.

Anakin - doesn't know what she'd be doing right now without Elesse. But it probably wouldn't be pretty.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a good thing for both of them that they have each other.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. It is.

Elesse is Anakin's, and she's going to be Anakin's forever.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she wouldn't want it any other way.
