Meelia goes to Amenta
Permalink Mark Unread

[Concurrent with kids these days and city lights on the water]

Meelia loved the start and the ending bit of the space adventure to Amenta, but she got bored in the middle - the ship wasn't really big enough to explore. But now she was going down to a new planet!! Where she would would meets lots of strange new alien friends and see big Amentan cities!! And stay with an Amentan couple who were really happy to have her staying with them and excited to meet her!!

When she landed on the planet she was already a bit tired from how much bouncing she had been doing about how great her new adventure was going to be. This was going to be the best!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish Ahtemik and Haemi Fanu are rural blue lesbians who spend most of their time on their farm estate and are very keen on adopting a cute alien! They meet Meelia at the shuttleport.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia waves enthusiasticly!

"Hi I'm Meelia and I just got here and I'm very excited to meet you and also what's that and can I go on it!"

Meelia points to a moving walkway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You sure can! It's a moving walkway."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia bounces and jumps onto the walkway and turns to see if the couple is following.

Permalink Mark Unread

One has joined her and the other is jogging ahead to receive her on the far side!

Permalink Mark Unread

She races the jogging one!

Permalink Mark Unread

She can win if she has a way to get around the yellow family ahead of her!

Permalink Mark Unread

She cartwheels on the side railing, passing them.

"Yay!!"

She wiggles to celebrate till the couple catches up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whew!" says the one who jogged on the normal floor. "That looked scary, but you pulled it off, you're a regular little gymnast, huh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods!

"I'm good at doing scary things sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And if you get a bump on the head you're fine, right? Tougher than you look." Haemi scoops her up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia hugs Haemi a little bit after she's scooped up.

"Well it hurts and sometimes and I cry a little but it goes away later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. So I guess you can do all the gymnastics you want even if it'd be risky for an Amentan and we'd want to have spotters and padded floors."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia nods.

"Is that what you use when you want to do gymnastics?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup! Not us personally, we're not gymnastics types, but for people who do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I have some friends back home who don't like gymnastics I guess."

She remembers that she has such a friend with her, and, after some searching her clothes, holds out what appears to be a small mouse.

"Like this friend! Her name is Cheep! She's a monster-mouse."

"Oh also, what'r'your names?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Haemi and my wife's Tish! Hello, Cheep, what a nice name - what makes Cheep different from a not-monster mouse?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep lives longer and she could do gymnastics like me if she wanted to. And had stronger arms. Also I don't think most mice are as smart as her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's nice to meet you, Cheep," says Tish, catching up. "You ready for a train ride, Meelia, or do you want to look around this city a bit before we take you home with us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep cheeps in response before scrambling back into Meelia's sleeve.

"I think I'd like to see your home right now if it's quieter there then here, since I haven't been in a very quiet place for a while."

"We can visit the city later, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, of course! Our home is really quiet, it's out on a big farm. And we can get the quiet train car to go there."

Down the elevator, into the train.

Permalink Mark Unread

The elevator feels a little bit like part of the spaceship ride but less so. She guesses this is cause they both go up and down.

The train also feels like that, cept side-to-side. She looks around at all the strange new Amentan people on the train.

Permalink Mark Unread

The quiet car has a yellow on it, knitting, and a sleeping green and a reading green, plus her and her caretakers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's she doing?" Meelia asks, pointing at the yellow.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's knitting! It's a way of making fabric out of yarn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooooh, can I try?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think she's in the middle of something but we can get you some knitting things to try when we're home!"

"I can ask the staff to pick some up now and they might beat us to the house."

"Oh, good idea, love."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia claps her hands together excitedly.

"This is gonna be so much fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh good! We're really excited to show you lots of stuff like that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia wiggles happily and swings her feet as the train continues zooooooming along.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually they reach a local station where they take a bus the rest of the way because these people really live out in the sticks, but it's a short smooth bus ride and then here they are at their farm! There are purples in the fields, very brown, who wave hello before going back to their work, and a lovely manor in the middle of everything.

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves hello back!

"Who were those people? Is this where they live?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some of them have houses near here, some of them travel here from houses farther away! They work on the farm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that sounds fun. Do you work on the farm too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sort of. It's our farm, but we don't do much with the plants most of the time - we do things like talking to people who want to take kids on field trips here, and managing all the people who do stuff with the plants and the fences and the machines and the markets for the crops, and buying more farms or selling bits of ours when we think that's a good idea. We do pick fruit when it's in season, though. Nothing's as delicious as a peach you got off the tree zero seconds ago, mm-mm," says Tish.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yeah those are really good! I don't usually have peaches another way, how do you do that? Oh also how do you manage all the people and what sort of machines they use and sorry for having so many questions but there are so many new things and it's really good!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, we sell some of the peaches, and they get shipped to towns and cities farther away from here so people there can have peaches too! They just get a little less tasty. And some of it is turned into other foods, like jam, which is good for seasons if you don't open it but not the same as a fresh peach."

"It's good to have questions! We wanted to have you come stay with us because we were excited to answer all those questions."

"Do you want to come with me into our office and watch me work? I'm not sure it'll be very interesting but maybe it will be since so much of it will be new to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds fun! I've never seen peach managing before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you learn to read Tapap or just speak it?" asks Tish, leading her to an office inside their house. The house is very pretty and spacious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can read, though it's sorta hard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let me know if I'm going through emails too fast and you want me to slow down or read them to you, then." And will Meelia sit on Tish's knee while she answers emails signing off on trying a new pesticide in a particular subsection of an orchard, and chooses a name for a new cultivar of grape, and looks over the bank statement for the month, and agrees to let a wedding take place among the plums?

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia sounds out some words aloud - enough to get the subjects but not to under-stand much.

"What's a pest-ic-ide?"

"What name are you gonna choose?"

"Who's having a wedding. Also what's a wedding?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pesticides are things that bugs and other stuff that are bad for plants don't like, so they'll stay away. We have to test new ones to make sure they're not bad for the plants, too, or for anything that's good for them, like pollinators, or for us, like if they made the food taste bad."

"I think I'll go with 'splendiferous'."

"Looks like Shian Safikt and Osas Teft are having this wedding, and a wedding is when people have a party to celebrate that they're getting married, like me and Haemi are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia cracks up at splen-dif-erous. It's really funny.

"Why'd you celebrate it? Also why'd they need to ask you to have it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Weddings are celebrated because they're happy occasions! They'll invite their family and friends to congratulate them on finding who they want to spend their life with. They're asking because they want to do it on my land, and they can't come on my land without my permission, especially not with a great big party full of people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I don't think most amaliens would have lots of people in their private places that they have to be alone in. I might try it once I guess to see how fun it was."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have more and less private places. The farm isn't very private, but it belongs to us so we need to give permission before someone can throw a whole party here - if nothing else they wouldn't want to try to have their party at the same place and same time as other people they didn't know so they want to make sure they've picked a good day for that. The house is more private, we wouldn't let strangers have a party here at all! And our bedroom is more private than that, even if someone is here to visit us at our house they usually won't go into the bedroom, but we share it with each other and the staff do clean it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are the staff different than people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The staff are people! But we don't want to clean our own rooms and that means we have to let the cleaners in there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, why don't you clean your own rooms? I think I'd clean my own private space if I had to to make it so someone else didn't have to go in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't think of cleaning as very fun so we hire other people to do it. It's more important that they're not in there unexpectedly, so we can be sure we're all by ourselves when we want, than that they're never in there at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Something occurs to Meelia, causing her to bounce up and down on Tish's lap.

"Do I get a room?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes you do! Do you want to see it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Up the stairs and over thisaway is Meelia's room! It has a nice big bed and a toy chest and some pretty draperies in sunrise-pink-and-gold-pastels on the walls. "We didn't know what you'd want in here so we guessed; if you want to change anything just say the word."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooooh!"

Meelia backflips onto the bed excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish laughs. "Comfy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia bounces up and down a bunch.

"Weeeee!"

She stops for a second and holds her hand out to Tish.

"Want to join?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure!" On Tish flops. She's heavier and doesn't bounce much but her flop bounces Meelia!

Permalink Mark Unread

Bounce!

Meelia bounces up and down to try to bounce Tish!

Permalink Mark Unread

The bed is not really springy enough to bounce Tish, but Tish laughs happily anyway.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. Could be bouncier but I guess this works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's meant for sleeping on. If you want to bounce and not sleep you get a trampoline."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A tramp-o-line?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A trampoline is a big sproingy piece of material held up by a rigid frame, so you can jump on it." She pulls out her pocket everything and finds a video of someone on a trampoline.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia makes a high pitched squeak so excitedly that Tish can't even quite hear it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"D'you want a trampoline?"

Permalink Mark Unread

VERY RAPID NODDING

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish laughs and orders one.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where is it? Did you just look for it on your everything? Can I have an everything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can have an everything!" There's one already in the nightstand drawer, here it is! She can tell it her name and teach it her fingerprint if she has one and sift through the apps available. "And yes, I bought it on my everything, my everything knows how to let the shop that sells trampolines get money out of my bank account so they just got some money and they'll send us a truck with a trampoline in it soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When's it gonna arrive?"

Meelia says this while setting up the everything. She also teaches it all her toeprints too, just in case.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Looks like... four hours!"

Tish giggles about the toeprints but the everything is just as happy to learn them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is really happy and excited but also should probably sleep before that. She's had a long day and skipping sleep usually isn't a good idea, even on adventures. Unless you really really need to.

"I should prolly sleep before that, will it still be here later?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup, I'll have them set it up in the yard. Do you want help figuring out the shower before you sleep so you can be all clean before you get under the sheets or can you figure that out on your own?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Showers are kinda stingy actually so I prolly won't take one, if the sheets still work that way?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm, do you like baths better?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, those are fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then that works fine. Let me show you how our bath works, you've probably only seen the spaceship showers and so on." Behold, the bath!

Permalink Mark Unread

Behold, a splashing amalien!

Permalink Mark Unread

Adorable. And then she can be dried off in a snuggly fluffy towel and tucked into bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fluffy! Snuggly! Bed!

Meelia goes to sleep with a big smile on her face. This is the coziest adventure she's been on in a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish takes pictures, and Haemi comes in to look and also take pictures, and off they go, shutting the door behind them so she can sleep in peace.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia has a few nightmares but she wins in most of them. Overall it's a good night's sleep.

She wakes up early and very excited to go exploring!

Permalink Mark Unread

Haemi's a morning person! "Good morning!" she says when Meelia pokes her head into the downstairs. "Want some eggs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope! I'm going trampolining!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! All right, have fun! It's out back, through the sunroom that way - can't miss it." Point.

Permalink Mark Unread

*Sproing*!

Permalink Mark Unread

She is welcome to sproing to her heart's content. After a bit Haemi and Tish go sit in the sunroom and watch her at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is very good at trampolining.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow! Tish takes a video of this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to try?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it would be pretty bad for my ankles," says Haemi.

"Not when I've just eaten, maybe a bit later," says Tish.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, this feels better for my ankles then doing it how I mostly did this at home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My ankles are pretty delicate, I don't jump much at all," says Haemi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no! I sorta forgot how Amentans can break like that. Sorry."

Meelia stops bouncing on the trampoline for a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay, dear, it doesn't bother me, just means I can't jump like you can. You go right ahead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meela will jump for a bit longer but visibly starts getting bored after a bit.

"Hm. I think I'm going to try going exploring for peach trees. You want to come with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure thing!" says Tish, getting up to join her. "Do you want me to show you the way or do you want to just wander?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. I want to try it for myself so I can practice wandering on Amenta. It could work different than my home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, lead on!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is really good at exploring! Cheep also helps by finding cool things along the way and directing her towards them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The peaches won't actually be ripe right now, but they might still have flowers. They bear fruit a few times in a year, when their pollinators have been active, and the white bees are working on them right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that's also how it works at home but I didn't realize these ones wouldn't have fruit now."

She's a little disappointed, but maybe Cheep will find something exciting on the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They will in a few more weeks! The white bee crop is my second favorite peach crop after the migratory bat crop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooooh. Do they taste different?"

Cheep returns, excited about something he found.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so! A lot of people can't taste the difference, but I think tasting the peaches right off the tree lets you pick up on a lot of subtleties... Is he safe running off like that, I'm not sure someone with a tractor or a harvester would notice him..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's pretty tough! Monsters aren't as tough as amaliens but they are still tougher than animals and Amentans."

Meelia follows Cheep to see what he found!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep has found a dropped earring!

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh! I have no idea whose that might be or how long it's been there, so I guess you can keep it if you like it, though you don't have pierced ears."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do ears get pierced?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"With a needle!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have a needle? I sorta want to try it, this looks really pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want your ears pierced we can take you to a place where they do that, I wouldn't be sure I could do it right at home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, okay. What direction is a place that could do it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"- that way, approximately, but usually I wouldn't walk, I'd call a jitney."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's a jitney?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's like a bus but it doesn't come here every ten minutes, it only comes when someone wants it and around commuting hours, because we're not near much other stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, so if I wanted to go to the city it would come and pick me up like a friendly monster?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, very much like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do I let it know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your pocket everything can do it. Do you want to go all by yourself or should I come along?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can come along if you'd like."

Permalink Mark Unread

So Tish shows her how to summon a jitney and one is along in about fifteen minutes, plenty of time for them to take a meandering route to the road.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meander! Meelia likes meandering with new friends.

Permalink Mark Unread

The jitney picks up a couple other people but mostly takes them pretty expeditiously into town, where they can find a piercing place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is sorta scared when she sees how piercing is done. She hugs herself a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't have to get your ears pierced, today or ever, if you don't want to," Tish assures her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay, I'm very brave."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to do both of them? They can do it both at once so you don't have to psych yourself up twice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I only have one earing so I think I should only do one right now.

She displays the pretty earing Cheep found.

Permalink Mark Unread

"- oh, I was going to buy you a new pair, but I guess we can have them sterilize that one for you if you prefer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia nods!

"Cheep found it for me!" she says, proudly.

Permalink Mark Unread

In that case they can put the earring in the sterilizer and she can pick an ear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her right ear please!

Permalink Mark Unread

Annnnnd - poke!

Permalink Mark Unread

Eep! Meelia does her best not to cry and only one or two tears fall out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good job holding still!" says the piercer, clipping the backing to the earring. He holds up a mirror. "What do you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's great! You did a good job poking me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you! Now, I don't know how amaliens work, but an Amentan would want to leave that in - being gentle on the ear in the shower and sleeping and so on - all the time for about a week, to make sure the piercing heals pierced; and after that you can swap out other earrings if you want. If it starts to feel worse, especially if it feels hot or swollen, or it looks weird, you take out the earring right away and go to a doctor about it - might lose the piercing but better that than getting an infection."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I can swap out the earring - would probably heal? I had a spike from a monster stuck in me one time for a while and when I pulled it out it healed up after a bit."

She holds her hands a couple of feet apart to indicate the length, and gestures to a spot on her abdomen to indicate where it was.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh, do you think it would heal too fast for you to put a new earring in even if you did that right away?" asks Tish.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Prolly would be fine but might heal tinnie tiny bit each time?

Meelia pokes the earing to see how it feels right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, it's a thin bit of metal stabbed through her ear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's perfect!"

Meelia gets down from the chair and twirls around.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm so glad you like it!" says Tish. "Anything else you want to do while we're in town?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Adventuring!"

She sets out very purposefully to explore the very busy city.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish laughs and follows her out and gives her spot advice on things like crossing streets that have motor traffic when they come to one of those and waiting in line if she wants a frozen dessert from this cart.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I can probably run across the street and be okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- you might be fine, since you can sleep off any injuries you got, but it'd really scare anyone who you ran in front of since they might not notice right away you're not an Amentan kid, and also it could damage their vehicles, so it's better to cross with everyone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh I think I could dodge, would that still be scary for people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes! Imagine you were trying to walk through a field with a bunch of little mice, like your mouse but not as tough, so they'd be badly hurt and maybe die if you stepped on them. And there's plenty of room for you to step, so you go real fast, because you're in a hurry - and then mice start running across where you're trying to run. Would that be scary?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh yeah, it would be! I probably wouldn't run there once I realized that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right, but these vehicles do need to get where they're going, so instead we made a crossing for us - like we're mice, and there's a place where they pause to let mice go ahead of them. You could also solve it by making it impossible for people to get anywhere the trucks drive, but that would be harder to build, and most people don't mind having to wait at a crossing like this for a minute when they cross some streets."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I mind the waiting it just feels silly to wait when it seems like it would be fun to go across while cars are zooming and less fun when they aren't. I guess that might not be true for amentans though cause you're more deli-cate."

She bounces, wanting to keep moving even while they're waiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

And then the signal indicates they can go. "Thanks for waiting!" says Tish. "If you like running and dodging we could play paintball or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that when you throw paint at each other? We do that at home sometimes and I'm really good at it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's like that but they have paint guns so you can make paint fly at other people really fast!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh wow! That does sound fun. Are you good at it?"

Meelia continues walking to explore the city while she chats. Also, Cheep runs off to see if he can find anything fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not good at it at all but I'd try it with you if you want."

Cheep can find trash cans and streetlights and bus stops and train stations and public bathrooms.

If he looks really far afield he might find other things too.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I bet I'd be really good at it. I'm really fast at rea-cting to things."

None of those things looks different than other things Cheep's seen here, so he'll keep searching.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep can find apartment buildings and office buildings and schools and stores! He can find purples and oranges and greys!

He can find a garbage alley and a red in it picking up some things that spilled out of a bag!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep hasn't seen that color before when he's been here! He also hasn't seen garbage really, it smells sorta nice. He'll watch here for a bit to see more.

Permalink Mark Unread

The red glances at the mouse and starts picking up the garbage faster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep hides nearby where he can see and keeps following.

Permalink Mark Unread

The trash is all picked up and loaded onto the truck. The red sprays some red spray chalk on a few spots of the alley and hops into the truck and drives on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep is sorta curious where the truck is going and will follow it for a bit if he can keep up!

Permalink Mark Unread

The truck goes pretty slowly and stops often. The reds in it collect more trash.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep keeps an eye out for any pretty trash as he follows.

Permalink Mark Unread

The trash is, by and large, not pretty. Though there are things like shiny aluminum foil in there if one doesn't have very refined tastes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep will try to grab one of them but is mostly still trying to follow. He's going on an adventure, just like his Meelia.

Permalink Mark Unread

The red's pretty careful about not letting trash get on the ground most of the time so there are no great opportunities to snag aluminum.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep is sad about this but can keep following without getting any.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually the truck gets onto a bigger road and speeds up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep hops on the truck when it speeds up, since be can't go that fast on his own. He's a bit nervous about going away from his Meelia but she likes adventures and so does he.

Permalink Mark Unread

The truck goes at a pretty steady pace so it's not all that hard to hold on once he's found a good niche on the bumper.

The truck drives out of the city, dumps its contents into a pit, and then turns around and drives back in to the city again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep hops off the truck at the pit - this place looks so different then the other places near her and Meelia will be so proud of him. Also it's his chance to find the shiny foil!

Permalink Mark Unread

Finding the shiny foil is not going to happen, it's really not set up for that to be doable. The pit is crunching up all the trash and turning it into compact chunks and conveyor-belting them into a deeper pit-section.

There are a few little buildings around the giant machinery and the people in them have red hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep would still try to get the foil but thinks it seems too scary and isn't as good at figuring out ways to do things as his Meelia. Instead he goes to find out what the New Color people are doing!

Permalink Mark Unread

One of them is monitoring some instruments displaying various numbers. One is watching a video feed of trucks as they approach. A group of two are meeting one of the trucks before it can dump anything, and taking some of the stuff off it and putting it on a different truck.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep is investigates all the different things people are doing, saving the Different Truck for until he's done exploring here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Numbers Red appears to be scared of mice and yelps and stands up on her chair when he approaches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no, Cheep didn't mean to scare her! He wiggles at her to let her know he is friendly and okay to meet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She grabs a broom and attempts to sweep him away, yelping!

Permalink Mark Unread

He is okay being swept away even if he's a bit sad about scaring her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile, back in the city, Meelia is on her own exploring adventure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does Meelia want to crash this park party full of purples? Does she want to watch a green put a mural on the side of a wineshop? Does she want to buy a swimsuit and go swimming in this swimming pool? Does she want to tag along with this field trip of little oranges at the science museum? Does she want to splash in this fountain? Does she want to listen to this string quintet playing an open-air theater?

Permalink Mark Unread

She wants to do all of the things!

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she shall! Tish is endlessly indulgent about this. Eventually Haemi meets up with them at the fountain.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia likes trying all the things but likes swimming the best - she's also really really good at it though she might scare Tish a little when she doesn't come up for air for a while once or twice.

She had gotten dry after the pool but now she is wet again from the fountain which she is doing splashy gymnastics in when Haemi shows up.

Permalink Mark Unread

As long as she's still moving around down there Tish will figure she can just hold her breath a really long time or something.

"Awwww!" says Haemi. "Hi Meelia! Having fun?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes"

Watery spinny flip!

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww. They will sit and watch her <3

Permalink Mark Unread

She does things sorta like this, 'cept she's better at it and fancier and smaller.

They are very impressed and clap when she completes tricks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want me to teach you? I can do some that aren't ankle hurty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think gymnastics is harder for people who are bigger! If I were going to learn even non-ankle-hurty tricks like that I'd want to start somewhere with a softer surface than a fountain," says Haemi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can teach you on the grass and can do easy things? Like stretches that look sorta fun or jumping jacks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, all right," says Haemi, and Tish gets up too and they go over to the grassy area.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia shows them how to touch their toes (or their knees if they can't reach cause they're too tall) and to do jumping jacks and then if they're ready she'll show them how to do handstands with someone else holding your legs so it's easier.

Permalink Mark Unread

They will gamely attempt these things, giggling a lot about it in the process.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee!

"You did a really good job! Should get a treat to celebrate!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right! Haemi's favorite is mini waffles."

They can go to a mini waffle place and get mini waffles rolled in various sugar mixes for everyone.

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!!!!

Meelia is so happy the Amentans found them! These are really really really good. And Haemi and Tish are also really good!

Permalink Mark Unread

Awwww they are also so happy they found the amaliens! They hug her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Elsewhere:

Cheep has finished exploring the first place and has hitched a ride on the other type of truck to see what other things he can find for his Meelia. It's a big adventure but he's an adventuring mouse who can handle it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The other type of truck goes to the city, and into a part of it with only red-haired Amentans around, no other ones at all! They start unloading the truck; different ones come by to grab different things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep spies on all the different things they are taking out.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a variety of things - looks like some clothes and some electronics and some packaged food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep'll follow some of the New Color people to find out where they are putting the things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Some of the things go in a store, and some go into apartment buildings.

Permalink Mark Unread

He heads into the apartment building to explore since that seems exciting and like it will have new friends for him and his Meelia.

Permalink Mark Unread

The apartment building has linoleum floors and it is occupied by reds. The one Cheep has followed home brings their new clothes up to a second floor apartment and lets themself in and greets a kid who is there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh that looks sorta like an amalien cept with the different color hair! He saw some like that before but never with this color. He's pretty sure that Meelia will be excited by this place.

He sorta misses her so it's time to leave and find her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia has been having the best day. She is getting sorta tired but doesn't want to stop doing things. Though she knows that sleep is important even when things are the best...

"I think I should prolly go nap for the night soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, let's get you home and in the bath so you can sleep!" agrees Tish, hailing a jitney.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I don't normally have a bath two nights in a row?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can imagine it'd be hard to arrange on your planet! Do you have running water there at all? But here we take a bath or a shower every day."

"Sometimes twice!"

"Sometimes, yep. If a bath sounds boring maybe you'd like a fizzy bath bomb to make it interesting colors and glittery? I have some of those."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have streams and rivers and there's running water in Keetim. Also also there's a monster that is made of water that runs around and likes to play but also steals things sometimes and I had to help them learn not to steal important things one time."

"A fizzy bath bomb does sound like a lot of fun! I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

So they get home and plop her in the bath and drop in a fizzy bath bomb which is purple with gold glitter in it and then into bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

That was a really fun bath and a cozy bed to end the very good day she has had.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep has a pretty great nose and he's pretty sure that Meelia isn't in the city where he left her. Probably this is cause she went back to the place she last napped? He looks around for something going in that direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are occasional trucks and buses and a surface train in that general direction, though none going very directly, so he might need a few changes of vehicle.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can jump from vehicle to vehicle, just like his Meelia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then eventually as long as he's traveling in approximately the right direction he can reach striking distance of the farm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep is good at directions! He gets to the farm very late at night.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone is asleep except for the night security grey, who is mostly not looking out for mice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep is excited to be back home* but won't wake Meelia up cause she should get sleep, even on adventures. Instead he cuddles up to her and gets some rest till morning.

*with Meelia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia wakes up earlier then the last day cause she is less ex-hausted and is super excited.

Oh! There is a Cheep! Yay! Hugs for Cheep!

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee! Hugs from his Meelia.

He is excited and has something to show her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can tell cause of how he's wiggle-vibrating!

She gets dressed in a jiffy, makes sure she has all her things (including her wooden sword strapped to her back), and heads out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Security grey asks if she is going for a walk?

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep is taking her on an adventure!

Permalink Mark Unread

Whereabouts? Does she have her pocket everything with her?

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't know where! Wherever Cheep found an exciting thing.

She does not have her pocket everything, but that's a good idea so she'll get it before she goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, good. As long as she has her pocket everything and it's charged she'll be able to let Haemi and Tish know if she needs help, does she know how to do that?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure what I'd need their help with but I think I'd press this button and then this button?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yup, that'll let you talk to Tish, and if she doesn't answer you can try Haemi with this one. Have a fun adventure!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia sets out, guided by Cheep!

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep, running in front of her while she follows, brings her to the side of the big road he came from.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are sure plenty of trucks on here, and a few buses.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep I can't just grab onto one of these cars, it'd scare the Amentans in them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I could probably do it without them noticing, you're right..."

(Cheep didn't actually say that but sometimes Meelia pretends he is saying things that she thinks he means.)

"That feels sorta bad though.... Like, I'd tricking them into doing a thing they might find scary?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. You're right, it's okay for you to have done that. I think it's different for me though cause ....I guess cause with you it seemed more im-plaus-ible that they'd end up being scared but for me they might see me somehow even if I'm really careful and that might scare them. I think if I was definitely not going to be seen it would be okay though... But they might have everythings looking under their car or something, I don't know...."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay I'll try a different thing first by seeing if one of the cars will notice me and help, and then if that doesn't work I'll try the hidey thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep!"

(Cheep doesn't know what's going on but his Meelia likes it when he adds in cheeps when she's making her sounds at him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia waves her hand from the side of the road, trying to get the attention of a car or bus going in the right direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

One of the buses comes to a halt. The driver leans out. "You lost, kiddo?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No! I'm on an adventure. I think your bus is going in the right direction, can I get on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"- uh - where are you going -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep is bringing me somewhere he found."

She holds out Cheep to demonstrate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep continues looking like a mouse. He is not really certain what else is expected of him here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where are your parents?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have any?"

Oh wait, she can guess what is confusing him.

"I'm an amalien, not an Amentan or an animal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- oh. Uh, yeah, you can ride the bus, sure." He opens the door for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia will ride the bus! Zoooom.

Permalink Mark Unread

The bus actually goes between cities but he will stop between stops for her if she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep wants to get off here!

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia indeed asks to be left in-between stops, where Cheep wants her to go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. "Next time bring a bus pass or somebody who's got one!" the driver advises, letting her off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia doesn't know what that means but will figure it out later! Right now she will follow Cheep a bit off road to their final destination.

Permalink Mark Unread

This takes her past a hospital and some government housing and a supplemented daycare and a purple school and some apartments and little stores, all a bit less nice than the ones she saw hanging out with Tish in the city yesterday, and then there is the fork in the road marked bright crimson. A delivery truck is trundling in.

Permalink Mark Unread

None of those things seem very different, so they probably aren't the place Cheep was leading. She follows the crimson marked road, excited about adventure in a new place.

Permalink Mark Unread

This isn't a highly trafficked area - there's a storage unit over there, a water treatment plant over there, bus garage with a lone fuel attendant in it this time of day. The delivery driver isn't checking her rearview.

Nobody spots Meelia going in, at least not if she finds a good hiding place right away. How about behind that big container full of boxes of shoe covers, conveniently right by the entrance?

Permalink Mark Unread

That big container doesn't really look interesting to her so she's gonna walk past it.

She isn't trying to hide - people usually aren't scared of her like they are of Cheep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then several people will detect her in short order but not the deliverypurple, not right away, not before she has dropped a carton full of flour right on a red's foot and shouted at him to back off; he hops away, tears springing to his eyes. Then she unloads another carton and then she spots Meelia. "Hey, is that kid one of yours whose parents are looking to get arrested or did a clean kid wander in -"

"Not ours ma'am," someone says hastily, after a confused look at Meelia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no, are you okay?"

Meelia is focusing on the person who is hurt, the other stuff doesn't seem that important.

Permalink Mark Unread

The injured red looks at her in alarmed confusion and doesn't answer.

"Kid, you've gotta go that way, through that door there, the white door," says the purple, pointing. "That's the shower exit, it's got instructions on the wall. Do your parents know you're missing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not a kid and I don't have parents. I'm an amalien. And I don't want to shower right now."

Meelia knows a lot about hurt feet, is this one broken?

Permalink Mark Unread

Hard to tell with the shoe on, but it looks plausibly broken insofar as she can discern information about it.

"Okay, well, amalien, you have to shower whether you feel like it or not," says the purple. "This is the red district and you aren't even wearing shoe covers, it's the law you have to decontam on your way out. I dunno who lost track of you but they'll tell you the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can shower on my way out I guess. But I'm not going out right now, I'm going in."

To the Amentan with the hurt foot: "I think your foot might be broken. I could help with that if you'd like? I've helped with a lot of broken feet before." Usually her own.

Permalink Mark Unread

The hurt red is at this point sitting on the ground, propping up the bad foot on the opposite knee and scooting slowly backward. "I, uh. Shower exit. That way." Point.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.

"I can go there afterwards don't worry."

She's not used to being scary to Amentans!

"I'm not scary, I promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not afterwards, there's nothing for it to be after, you shouldn't be here in the first place," says the purple.

Scoooooot away goes the red. Another red helps him up and he leans on them to hop down the street.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm an adventurer and Cheep thought here would be good to explore since it looked different than other places."

Meelia is confused about why the Amentans are leaving! Maybe they have a good doctor somewhere.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's different, in the sense that you should not explore it. Look, if I have to call the cops to make them put you through the shower instead of you just walking there yourself nobody's gonna have a fun time about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, then I guess you shouldn't do it if it's not going to be fun?"

Meelia is really confused! And a bit worried - though she's very brave.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The only option that is any more fun than that one is if you go, all by yourself, into the shower exit, right now, without trying to pet the reds or anything," says the purple firmly. "If I leave without making sure you're out I'm in trouble, if I stay here while you dawdle I'm late for my next delivery, if you leave any other way you get arrested and probably there's a huge to-do about arresting an alien but better that than you tracking pollution all across the city. You have to go. That way." Point, again, at the shower exit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, how would you get in trouble? Also what do you mean by pollution? Also also, I can promise to do my best to go through the shower place when I go out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You promising to do your best is not me making sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, why do you need to make sure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So I don't get in trouble. Look, I think probably you can find people way more interested in having this conversation or one like it with you than I am if you take your shower and go out and catch up with whoever you're staying with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What sorta trouble?"

Meelia is starting to think this is like the Giant Green Skeleton monster and his valley. The monster kept people away from a valley by crawling around it and swiping at people and someone had remembered from a while ago that there were amaliens in that valley and weren't sure the monster was friendly to them. So Meelia had gotten past the monster (even though it didn't want her to) to find the amaliens and then helped them leave so that monster could protect the valley without hurting amaliens. She was sad she'd had to make the monster angry to do that but she still thought it was the sort of important thing adventurers like her have to do sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"With, I don't know, my boss, the cops, the government, anyone who realizes I'm right here and should have made sure you obeyed the law when you look awfully likely to not obey the law. Did anybody explain laws to you before you came here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They said their were laws that were rules for everyone's own good. And this one doesn't seem very important for my own good. You can tell your boss and the cops and the government and anyone else to call me on my everything and I'll tell them you didn't do anything wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you maybe did not understand the explanation you got very well. Look, do you want me to call the cops? All they'll do is show up and put you through the shower without standing around asking nicely for nearly as long first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You aren't asking very nicely. I think I'm going to go check on the person whose foot got hurt now."

Meelia walks off, in the direction of the person who got hurt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't just stand there, you idiots!" the purple snaps at the reds who are indeed kind of just standing there.

"The doctor will take care of him, miss!" blurts a red. "It's very kind of you to want to help but we wouldn't like to bother the police over it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia knows a bully when she sees one. Most amaliens aren't like that, but sometimes they are (usually cause they're very sad and angry and confused) and monsters are more often.

"I can let the police know that there's nothing to worry about. If you really really want me to leave I can but you don't have to say that just cause she tells you to and is mean to you. I'm an adventurer and very good at helping, even when its hard and scary."

Permalink Mark Unread

A red kind of stage-whispers to her, loudly enough to reach her but plausibly not enough to reach the purple, "We really really really really do not want cops here. Please do not make her call the cops."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, cops are bullies too. And the mean Amentan here will call them. Its prolly easier for her to come back without letting this mean Amentan know about that then.

"Okay I'll leave. It was nice meeting you all."

She heads out through the exit shower.

Permalink Mark Unread

The purple watches her, shoving out a few more cartons, and leaves as soon as the door clicks behind her.

There is a box that says it's for clothes and shoes and another that says it's for electronics and other non-textile items and both of these have signs saying that the following list of materials are likely to suffer damage for which the Castile Corp is not liable, and once she's divested of her possessions there is a door for her to proceed through.

The shower has several chambers to go through one at a time airlock style, each with instructions on the wall and buttons she can push to redo a section if she's not sure she did it right and a timed program and audio instructions available if she has trouble with reading in the steam of the hot water. There are a lot of kinds of soap. The complete program takes about five hours.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia gets pretty confused about all this pretty fast! She looks around for a way to get out faster.

Permalink Mark Unread

The shower doesn't have a way to tell if she doesn't actually scrub when she's supposed to, but it will not in fact let her out unless she pulls the fire alarm.

Permalink Mark Unread

So. She could prolly break her way through all the glass and plastic and things but ... she's trying to be sneaky so no one is mean to the red haired Amentans. So she'll do this the hard way.

Permalink Mark Unread

After another couple of hours she really really wants to get out but still isn't and it's so tiring and boring but sometimes adventures have bits like that. She starts doing acrobatic tricks to pass the time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually she's done! Finally!! She has defeated the terrible really long and bad shower.

Permalink Mark Unread

The last chamber returns her belongings and blows warm dry air at her!

Permalink Mark Unread

Eee, that's sorta nice! She picks up her belongings (including Cheep, who doesn't shower) and sneaks out. She is really confused about what the shower is for but maybe it's just for being mean.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep has gotten the same treatment as her pocket everything, which involved radiation bombardment and high temperatures and passing through some chambers with inhospitable gas mixes. He may have had even less fun than her even if his process was faster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep did not have a fun time at all! If he weren't a monster mouse he wouldn't be alive but instead he just had a very unfun time and a bunch of his hair fell out and also his body went to sleep even when he didn't want it to and he is really sad and kinda whimpering afterwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep!!!"

Meelia very carefully hugs Cheep and cries and oh no this was even worse for him why'd they do that oh no oh no oh no.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually she sneaks out, still cradling Cheep.

Permalink Mark Unread

The door to the outside of the red district is by a police station and a loading zone for a shoe store and a military recruitment office and a lumber yard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia recognizes that that is a police station! She very carefully sneaks past to avoid being spotted on her way back into the red district. She's sorta scared now - she really really doesn't want that to happen again - but she's brave and adventuring means bad things happen sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is a truck departing the red district, and one coming back in, and they maneuver around each other at the aperture into the district.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia rolls under the one coming in and clings to the bottom, sneaking out once it passes by a shadowy place in the red district. This time she won't be seen by anyone while she explores. She's not sure what's going on but she's going to find out cause that's what she does.

Permalink Mark Unread

The truck she's clinging to parks in an underground garage and then two reds get out of it and plug it in and leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sneaks out, avoiding people unless she's sure she can hide from them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can pretty easily creep around the parking garage, evading reds going to and returning from work in their various trucks.

Permalink Mark Unread

So many people with red hair! She explores some more, still trying not to be seen.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everyone here has red or pink hair!

If she goes over to the edge of the parking garage where it's open to the air she can see the street level. Rowhouses, cobblestones, an old lady sweeping the steps up to her home, a one year old playing with a nearly-empty container of red spray chalk and trying to make enough of it come out to draw a satisfying squiggle, somebody perched on an apartment building roof trying to clean out a gutter. She has a decent view into a fourth-story apartment being used as a salon where someone with purplish roots to their hair is getting it trimmed and dyed coral pink and coral red in streaks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sets out, looking for the person who whispered to her about not wanting the police earlier. As long as everyone has red hair she'll probably stop trying to hide so much.

Permalink Mark Unread

The old lady with the broom yelps upon spotting her and disappears into her house.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no! People are still scared of her. Maybe they think she's going to call the police? She'll continue walking around and try to find someone she can explain this too who isn't too scared.

Permalink Mark Unread

The one year old with the chalk isn't scared! ...but her relative who's watching her from indoors is petrified and scoops her up and rushes her indoors.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not going to hurt you or tell the police or anything!" she yells to them as they go and hide.

Permalink Mark Unread

They close their patchwork curtains firmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She keeps wandering to see if there's anyone who can explain things to her. She really doesn't want to scare people but she is worried and wants to help and can't do that without knowing what's going on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately, everyone is either terrified of her or caretaken by someone who is.

Meelia's pocket everything goes off.

Permalink Mark Unread

She pokes at it.

"Why are you making that sound?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It says that Tish Ahtemik is calling her and has marked this URGENT.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does this green button work to answer the call?

Permalink Mark Unread

It does!

"Meelia?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tish!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you in a red district? We heard from some people you'd wandered into one before but we were expecting you to come home after you'd gotten clean and now it looks like you're back in it? Did you drop something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm exploring. And trying to find out why the person who made me take the Too Long shower was being mean to people here. They also seem scared of me and I don't know how to fix that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, honey, this is complicated. We can talk about it when you're home but I'm afraid you're going to have to take another long shower again to get out of there without breaking the law. I can stay up late if you want to talk about it as soon as possible, I can even come get you at the exit when you're done cleaning up, but it's not a good place to go exploring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Last time I look a long shower it hurt Cheep a bunch!"

She also is suspicious about the idea that somewhere is not a good place to explore. 'less it's someone's private place but she doesn't think this is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no, does soap hurt him? Is he with you again this time?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's here! I didn't use soap on him cause he's a mouse monster and doesn't shower so I just put him with my pocket everything and he got really really hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- oh no, that must have been terrifying for both of you! Pocket everythings break if they get wet so they have to do other things to make them clean. This time you should keep him with you and just try to wash him, okay? He has to get clean but he's not a pocket everything at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... The shower is really really long. And seems silly! I'm not even dirty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The place you are is really dirty! It might be that if you just walked there, and didn't touch anything you found, that only your shoes are dirty, but we can't be sure, and the law is about making it so everyone can be really, really sure. "

Permalink Mark Unread

"It doesn't look dirty at all. Are you sure it didn't just used to be dirty and then it rained a bunch or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Even if some things in there aren't dirty, it's a place where we can't be sure, and we have to be able to be sure. This is really important to do the way everyone expects even if you have a really good reason to think your situation is special, I'm sorry the shower's so long but hopefully you won't ever have to do it again after you get out of there. Do you want me to - come in and help you and Cheep with it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No I don't think another person should have to do the long shower...."

"I am still confused about why I have to do the long shower and it's really not fun but I'll do it and talk to you about it afterwards but it's important to me that you 'splain things to me, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's getting late but if you go through and get all cleaned up right now and take the jitney I'll send you straight home I will stay up long enough to talk about it tonight. Okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hrm. Okay."

Meelia goes with Cheep to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes so so long but at least she has Cheep for company and she is super annoyed cause she isn't even dirty and and it's soooo long. She runs out of gymnastics she can do without hurting herself for a while and considers doing more dangerous ones but decides she might need to be ready to do them soon afterwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she's out there's a jitney waiting for her and the driver to see that she and Cheep board it as expected and drive them through the darkness back to the farm. Haemi's asleep, but Tish is up waiting; she's got the TV on an action movie to keep herself awake, though she's yawning. She gathers Meelia up in a hug when the driver drops her off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia hugs back a little, but not as much as she wants to cause she's confused and worried about Tish being wrong about important things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish plops the both of them down on the sofa and turns off the TV. "Okay. You have questions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

She figured out what to ask while she was in the second really long shower.

"I have a lot of questions, I can ask them one at a time I guess."

"Why were the people with red hair scared of me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They didn't want anyone to think they were breaking the law, or trying to get you to break the law, or letting each other get away with breaking the law."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not? Also why would they be breaking the law?"

She sorta assumed people wouldn't be scared of breaking laws they didn't want to break, cause then why would the things be laws.

Permalink Mark Unread

"- well, breaking the law is really bad. There are so many Amentans and we live so close together that we all need to follow the rules we've made that let us coexist comfortably and be sure that we're all doing that together. So they preferred you to show up back here and say 'they were scared of me!' because then we assume none of them tried to touch you or take anything from you or anything like that, that they all left you alone. If you came here and said you'd made friends with some of them we'd have no idea what had happened in enough detail to know if they'd done something they shouldn't or not, not without sending someone to talk to them for more information, and they don't want that, they've got other things to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... Is it breaking the law for them to touch me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not necessarily, actually! But it'd be much more likely to be against the law than if they don't touch you, so since they want everyone to be sure, they didn't touch you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm confused about why there are laws about this and why they just wouldn't agree not to touch me without everyone having to get really worried that they did."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think anyone's very worried that they touched you. You just told us they were scared of you, which I'm figuring means they gave you lots of space and didn't even come close. But the place they live could be very dirty so we were worried about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wasn't though. Also I knew they were scared of me cause they wouldn't talk to me and ran away."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might not have looked dirty, but a lot of the things that can make people sick aren't actually things you can see by looking like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are the people with red hair sick?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes, yes. And even people who aren't sick can carry diseases."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you saying that the people with red hair carry diseases and that's why they have to be away from everyone and are scared of touching?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a little more complicated than that but it's a good simplification."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please could you tell me the complicated version. I think it's probably important."

Tish yawns, but then sighs and nods. "Okay. Reds are polluted. That's a lot like carrying disease, but it isn't literally the same thing. Things they touch are also polluted. So are poop and pee and dead bodies and vomit and pus. Reds' jobs are to keep all that pollution away from everyone else. You can wash pollution off, like you did today, but they can't, so they live separately and make sure that anything they touch outside their district is marked and we know to get it cleaned. It's illegal to spread pollution, it's one of the most serious crimes on Amenta."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sounds super sad! Why aren't people nicer to them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"- pardon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They seemed scared like they expected people to be mean to them! And also the delivery person who made me take the first shower called them names and hurt one of them without saying sorry or apol-o-gizing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, I don't know that deliveryperson or what was going on with them, but they were probably scared because they didn't know if you would be cooperating with helping them follow the law."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do a lot of people not co-op-erate with that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Almost everyone is very good about following the law. But since you're not an Amentan and you're new here, people don't know as much about what to expect from you yet. Probably everyone there thought that probably you would go out through the shower and head home once you were told to, but if you'd done something else instead it could have escalated really scarily, and they didn't know you well enough to predict that you'd do the right thing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I said I would promise to and they still didn't trust me! Also I sort of got the impression that the police were mean to the red haired people too and I'm confused about that. Also also why weren't there any on my planet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They also didn't know you well enough to know you could be trusted to keep your promises! It takes time to build up trust like that. There aren't any reds on your planet because we have enough technology, now, to make it safe for purples and oranges to do their jobs without any part of the city having to be polluted like a red district, and we didn't want to make your planet dirty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our planet's already dirty, there's dirt everywhere. That's mostly what it's made of on the top parts."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean we didn't want to make it polluted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Okay..."

"So the next time I go and visit the red people place can you or Haemi come with me and tell people you know me and you're not an alien and I'll definitely shower when I leave?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"- so a thing about pollution is that we don't like it and don't want to be near it. I would have come to help you if you were having trouble with the shower and you needed me, but I don't actually want to go to the red district, and Haemi won't either. We could send someone with you but they won't like it and they're not going to be friends with the reds or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. That seems really sad for the red people! What if one of you or someone else went and just told them that I would shower when I leave and than I'll stay there on my own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you actually want to have to shower again? You didn't seem to like it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to but sometimes there are hards part of an adventure, like really long showers or hard climbs or being on fire or running away for a really long time or getting eaten or getting smushed by a rock or walking across a deep dark part of the ocean for too long."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- I'm not sure this qualifies as an adventure? It's just a polluted part of the city that reds live in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's an adventure. I've been on a lot of them and I can tell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What makes it an adventure?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's hard and important and there are confusing parts and scary parts and fun parts and new parts. But I think even if something didn't have those things it maybe could still be an adventure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why would it be important or fun to barge into the reds' place and bother them there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I went around the city with the other amentans earlier and that wasn't barging in? Also why would it bother them if you told them that I would shower afterwards?"

Hm...

"Also, even if you have answers to those it's still important I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, the city has a part for reds, and a part for everyone else. You're not a red, you're an everyone else, so everything in the city you're supposed to visit is in the everyone else part. Even if they were told you'd shower afterwards they still might not want to hang out with you because they were busy or nervous about meeting an alien or if they didn't trust whoever told them. I haven't ever worked with reds but what I hear is that they're not very trusting and might be scared of you no matter how many times they were told you wouldn't hurt them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've gotten to know a lot of monsters who were scared of me at first. Sometimes it can take a really really long time but it's worth it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you tell me about one of those times so I can see if it sounds the same?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was a giant white sorta bat sorta moth monster that would hide from people at night and I was worried about why so I went looking for her and she would hide from me if I saw her but also she didn't seem very happy and I was worried that she was not okay so I spent a lot of time leaving out treats for her each night without looking at her and eventually I was able to pet her as long as I didn't look at her. I eventually figured out that she was lonely but didn't know how to make friends 'cause she was noc-turnal and scared of light and things so I became her friend and then helped her make more friends."

(picture of her)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I don't think the reds have that problem, there are plenty of them and they all live together and can be friends with each other."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm. They might have different problems. There was another time with a group of amaliens who thought everyone was fake cause one monster was making fake amaliens and that was a different sort of problem but I solved that too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"This planet doesn't have monsters, so it's not going to be something that would be that - special and surprising. They're just some red Amentans who live together in a district and need to be careful about not touching things outside of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes there are smaller problems too."

"But also I'm not sure you're right that it won't be big."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are you going to do if you go there and knock on doors till one will talk to you and you find that they're just what I said?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not like no one ever," yawn, "looks in on them, you saw a purple there today delivering them some things - maybe that wasn't a particularly nice individual but it would be other people sometimes too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I um. Think you might be sort of young and not used to things being hard and needing to check on things. ... Sorry I'm not good at saying things nice sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, honey, I know you're a lot older than me, but Amenta is different from your planet in a lot of ways and I've been here for thirty years. You just got here. There's a lot of stuff to see and do and this one isn't a good," yawn, "use of anybody's attention." Yawn. "Well. I need sleep. You don't need a bath since you took an entire decontamination shower, twice, so you can go straight to bed if you're sleepy, do you want me to tuck you in?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia doesn't think that being around one place for a long time is actually a good way to notice problems with the place, usually.

"You can sleep now if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, honey, see you in the morning." And up she lurches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia sits and thinks.

She doesn't trust Tish about this. Tish is new and nice and friendly but... something about how she talks about the people with red hair feels. Wrong. Like Tish isn't taking people being mean to them or them being sad seriously. She's worried that the red haired people are right not to trust people with different colored hair.

So. If she's going to do something about it what should she do...

Permalink Mark Unread

... that plan might work but. It feels bad. Like she's tricking people. It's possible it is bad. She promised herself she wouldn't do bad things without trying to know it. But she also promised herself to always go on adventures to help people, no matter what. No matter how hard or how scary.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia changes back into the clothes she came in, and packs away her wooden sword on her back. She writes a note on the pocket everything they gave her saying that Tish and Haemi were very nice and she hopes they can play again soon and sorry for making them sad but some things are important and maybe they'll understand someday. Sorry.

She leaves it unlocked on her bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Meelia heads out, to adventure. On her own this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mia?" says the voice of the night security from where he's patrolling a circuit around the house. Tish and Haemi can pronounce the L but most of their staff can't. "That you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no.

"Mhm. I'm leaving out on my own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you lose something in the fields? It'll be easier to find it after sunup."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. I'm leaving now."

Her knees bend a little, nervously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be pretty easy to get lost at this hour all by yourself, do you want me to call in someone to go with you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Please don't call anybody."

She bends her knees a little more.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have your pocket everything with you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you should go get it. Your host family here asked me to look out for you and make sure you didn't get lost or hurt, and wandering off in the night by yourself without even a way to call for help is a good way to get lost or hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I'm leaving it. Sorry."

She's almost crouching now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow, Mia, I think this is a really bad idea and I'm going to go wake up Haemi to ask her about it." He heads for the house.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia lunges forward onto her hands, using her arm muscles to spring off the ground into the air, flipping forward while she does. At the height of her flip she claps the heels of her hands together on the guards temples.

His body hits the ground at the same time as she lands.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh....

Permalink Mark Unread

He's probably going to wake up in less than an hour and she really doesn't want people searching for her that soon.

She prods and pokes at the guard a bit. His skeleton feels pretty similar to an amalien one, more similar than a wolf or a bear's so this should work okay. She pushes and twists parts of his body to dislocate his bones in a way that means he won't be able to move his limbs when he wakes up. She does the same to his jaw so he won't be able to yell. With that does she drags him into a corner where someone won't see him less they start looking for him and then they'll see him easy and it won't be at all hard to fix the bones.

... She's really really sorry.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes sure no one else sees her as she leaves. This time she doesn't flag down a bus on the highway Cheep brought her to before - she rolls under a car in the dark and clings to the underside during the trip. It's not long before she's back in the parking garage of the red haired people.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not too long to her next stop from there, just across the street. No one sees her as she scales the apartment building, climbing quietly into a room on the fourth floor.

She searches the cabinets without making a sound, eventually finding what she needs. There's a bathroom there so as long as she's quick this will be fine.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's known amaliens who dyed their hair before, though they use lemon juice instead of this worse smelling stuff and berries instead of this jar, but the basic idea is the same. The bleach stings her scalp as she applies it, but she manages to follow the instructions on it and the hair dye without making a sound. Her hands are red afterwards but she can use the bleach to wash that off too. It hurts a bunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sets out, keeping the bleach and hair dye with her, searching for a good hiding spot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cheep finds one! It's in a wall in a really beat up building and he can chase the mice in it away since they might make sound or bite his Meelia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks Cheep" she whispers.

Meelia hides in the hollow space behind a wall that Cheep found. She isn't sure whether Tish and Haemi will search the red place for her but they might and she doesn't want to be found right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Finally, newly red haired and exhausted, Meelia settles down to nap. She'll wake up if she hears anything surprising, but otherwise she'll sleep for about a week. That way any searches will hopefully be done already after she wakes up.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is, after a couple hours, some shouting and clattering around her, but they do not open the wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

As long as no one is mentioning anything that sounds relevant to her she keeps napping.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her name comes up several times, actually. And the word "amalien" and remarks that she is missing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wakes up when people mention her name and pays attention to what they're saying about her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"By all accounts this was obviously the amalien's own idea and she seems to think you're cute, we're not going to crack down any harder than we need to to find her," says a voice. "But we think she may be here - maybe she snuck in, maybe she threatened you, maybe her pet mouse has hypnosis powers, frankly I don't care - and we want you all out of the way till we've searched the place, top to bottom. You can go to work and park at the landfill or the incinerator or the sewage station till you get the all-clear, the social workers in Nauan and Pioppi are having their reds send extra vehicles to collect you and you can go there instead, we're diverting deliveries to those places. Got it? Because I don't want to say that a hundred more times and I don't want any of you to be here when they bring in the dogs."

Permalink Mark Unread

OH NO!

That doesn't sound like things you say to people who want to help you that sounds like the red haired people aren't getting a choice and it's her fault and and and.

Permalink Mark Unread

She only panics for a bit before her mind starts working on problem solving.

The dogs are going to be really good at smelling and maybe also hearing and can find her and hiding from smell is much much harder and... Actually she has everything she needs to solve this here.

Permalink Mark Unread

Step one is to exercise, quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Step two is to rub Cheep on her armpits. Sorry Cheep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Next she looks intently at Cheep.

"I need you to go away and wait for me. Tish and Haemi's house would be okay. But. Shoo. Sorry Cheep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep."

Cheep can tell he is supposed to go away and not be here and he trusts his Meelia to find him later. He leaves, heading back to the house where he snuggled with her in that comfy place a while ago.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now, this is the second worst part, she needs to stop smelling like herself.

She takes the bleach she'd saved for future hair dying and pours it all over her belongings and then herself.

ow ow ow o-

Permalink Mark Unread

She briefly loses consciousness. When she wakes up she has to do the last bit of plan so she doesn't sweat or make noise or anything for a bit.

She lies on her back and positions her wooden sword in just the right place and makes sure the tip is sharp enough, before plunging it into her heart, pouring the last of the bleach on top as she does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Amaliens are hard to kill and Meelia was careful not to do more than a minimal amount of damage, but it will still take a few weeks for her heart to start beating again after a wound like that. In the meantime, she naps. As silent as the grave.

Permalink Mark Unread

They find Cheep, eventually, and put him in a cage in a government office in case.

They don't find Meelia.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia stretches and starts to yawn, before remembering she's hiding and clamping her hand over her mouth.

She wasn't found! Now to go out and befriend some reds. Well, first she should touch up her disguise. Her hair hasn't grown much at all but she carefully applies some dye to the roots anyways. Next, she scratches up her face some so it's sorta swollen in places and generally she looks a bit different, in case anyone has seen her before. Brushing her bangs into her eyes to add more disguisedness, she sneaks out of the house, onto the street. She's not really trying to stay hidden anymore, though she's hiding that she's scared and nervous. She doesn't know if this is gonna work.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's...

nobody here, actually, the place is deserted.

Permalink Mark Unread

... Did they not let the people back?????? She hadn't even considered that a poss-ibility! A single tear runs down her face as she starts searching for clues.

Permalink Mark Unread

They seem to have taken some time about leaving - the lights are off and there aren't half-finished meals on the tables. The stores have been mostly emptied and there are a few objects that may have been dropped on the way out and not deemed worth going back for. The vehicles are all gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

She... doesn't know what to do this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets herself cry for a while. It's important to do that sometimes.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are traffic sounds from the surrounding neighborhoods, so it's not like they've evacuated the whole city.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's not actually reassuring!

Meelia eventually pulls herself together enough to think through what she should do next. She thinks over what she knows about the red haired people and other amentans and everything.

She considers trying to get back to the rest of the amaliens, possibly by surrendering herself. They'd help - she knows that - but she doesn't actually have an obvious thing for them to do yet and she's worried the amnetnas will stop her from telling them and and....

She really really doesn't want to give up. But does she have any other options?

She could try to find the red haired people. She has no idea where they are and more importantly she'd definitely get caught if she searched. Her disguise is not that perfect and they'd be surprised to see a person with red hair not wherever they took the red haired people. Hm, there might be a way she could get them to put her with the red haired people by appearing red haired? But but... they'd check to see if she was her first. Can she get around that?

She thinks back to everything else she knows about the Amentans, and the red haired people....

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. That plan is even worse than the last one.

Permalink Mark Unread

A while later, a fire starts in the former red district.

Permalink Mark Unread

The firefighters show up after someone notices the smoke. They drive in and spray it with a lot of water and leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Before they leave they notice a corpse. It's floating in a bathtub, as if it was trying to avoid the fire that way. The face is badly burned and hard to recognize, but it doesn't have many other injuries. What hair remains is red.

Permalink Mark Unread

They do note that. Does the corpse have enough awareness to hear them discussing it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not for at least an hour after they find it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it will have no idea of what their plans are or the timeline for it!

Permalink Mark Unread

For example, it will be taken completely by surprise when, after the addition of some flame-retardant materials around the perimeter of the district and smoke-scrubbing machinery held overhead with cranes, they circle back to finish up the job of burning the place to the ground!

Permalink Mark Unread

The Amentans keep being bad in ways that Meelia didn't even consider! Meelia makes a break for the perimeter, her face badly burnt and her body clammy. She's not running as fast as she would normally and it hurts a bunch but she does not want to be burned more then the amount she already was.

Permalink Mark Unread

The flame-retardant materials have some things to say about that, i.e. no.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries climbing. If that doesn't work she's going to try to get the attention of someone outside the perimeter.

Permalink Mark Unread

The flame retardant is a little hard to climb - you don't want flaming vermin pelting into the street - but not impossible. Fire's actually pretty loud, though, so nobody's going to hear her right away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia isn't the best amalien climber but she's still better than any Amentan. She's scaled cliff walls before - she can climb over this.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she gets over and plops onto the ground she gets hit with a blast of flame-retardant foam.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuck.

Why is Amenta like this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, in this case, it's so she doesn't catch anything on fire.

She'll have a long wait if she doesn't want to get out of the foam herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

She tries to dig her way out. She is very tired and going slow.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not super stiff flame-retardant foam.

"Shit, is it alive?"

"Even a red wouldn't leave their kid behind in an abandoned district, what the fuck?"

"Is that a red - could be orange - I can't see -"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia's hair - what's left of it anyways - is definitely red. Her face is also very badly burnt.

She doesn't know what to say so she won't say anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Definitely red."

"Check missing persons just to be sure, I don't want to mercy-kill some orange who just needed a week in the ICU."

"Checking. No missing orange kids... missing purple kid but he's four foot eleven... I guess it could be an edgy stupid kid on a dare with illegal hair dye... no missing grey kids, no missing green kids, no missing yellow kids, no mi- shit???"

"What?"

"Didn't this district get shut down because they couldn't find the amalien?"

"Shit!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She is confused and out of it but still manages to break down crying when she realizes that if she were a red kid they would have killed her rather than helping her. Her tears hurt her burnt face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay if it's the amalien we can't mercy-kill it, they're magic or some shit - who do we call about that -"

"Some blue, looks like, and the cops, and I guess an ambulance, if they can't fix her they can hardly make her any worse!"

"Right, I'll phone it in, you two keep an eye on her and get her with the hose if she tries to run for it and get pollution from here to Pioppi."

"Roger."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is not a fan of being called an it. She will wait, her expression - on what's left of her face - rather angry.

Permalink Mark Unread

There are sirens and vehicles and then someone shoots her with a tranquilizer dart.

Permalink Mark Unread

She has not actually seen a gun used before so she doesn't know it's coming.

Her last thought before falling unconscious is that that must be what Tish meant by paintball.

Permalink Mark Unread

When she wakes up she is in a hospital bed. There are flowers on the bedside table, one of her ankles is shackled to the bed and one of her arms shackled to the other end, and Tish is sleeping in a foldout bed by the window looking rather wrecked.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is angry about being shackled and sad about the red haired people and scared about what happens next and also, despite the scale of everything else, really sad about Tish.

She tries not to cry but fails pretty fast.

Permalink Mark Unread

This doesn't wake up Tish, whose sleep schedule is kind of a catastrophe, but it does make one of the medical devices she's attached to go off and an orange bustles in.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll stop crying when the orange comes in. She glares a bit but is mostly just tired.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've been asleep for four days. You're clean, recovering steadily though not fast, and also under arrest for maiming Seso Poante and suspicion of pollution violation, which is why the shackles. We can swap them to the other sides if they're bothering your skin but so far there doesn't seem to have been a problem. Your foster mom over there, and the other one too, has been worried sick, if you care. Can you confirm that you are Mee'ia?" (She can't pronounce the L but she tries a little harder than some people.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She feels bad about the person who she assumes was the guard and than starts crying again at that "if you care" part about Tish and Haemi and and...

She'll nod at the nurse to confirm who she is after a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you need anything right now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She cries for a while, before managing to choke out: "Cheep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That your space mouse?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's, uh, also under arrest, I don't know where but I can tell the cops you asked."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is confused and sad but can go back to quietly crying if the nurse doesn't have anything else she needs to say.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you need more painkillers you can poke that button, you've been on a pretty light dose since you were out. If you need an orange poke that one instead." And the orange leaves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is briefly confused about there being a fruit dispensing button, but is too distracted by crying to follow the thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a window in the door to her hospital room, and she can see the occasional patient or nurse or doctor striding by in this direction or that. The window to the outdoors is open and there's a breeze blowing in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia cries for quite a while before thinking about how she could gymnastics her way out of the handcuffs. She'd only actually need to break a few fingers and her ankle and she could put most of it back right away and the windows right there and... and she is tired of running. She doesn't actually see what good it would do at this point. She's not giving up - she would never - but she needs friends for this. And her friends are at home.

She glances sort of wistfully at the sleeping Tish. Then she starts crying again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish wakes up after Meelia's been conscious for about an hour. She pulls herself up to a sitting position, rubbing her eyes and patting her hair back into place.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia stops crying, but tears keep coming from her eyes. She is terrified - more terrified than she's been this entire time on Amenta.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish looks over at her and notices her eyes are open and gasps a little. "You woke up."

Permalink Mark Unread

This doesn't require her to say anything which is convenient cause she doesn't think she could say anything right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was worried you'd sleep for years, you'd get shipped all the way back to your planet and wake up in the middle of nowhere all alone and not even know what happened - are you okay -"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is having so many emotions at once, talking to this mean person/her friend/stranger/victim.

"I - I - I wouldn't be alone th-there. "

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you were asleep they couldn't exactly have asked where to drop you off - why didn't you talk to me, why didn't you wait till morning when I'd slept and talk to me -"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia cries for a bit before taking some deep breaths so she can say things.

"Wouldn't be alone anywhere there, not like here."

"I tried to talk t-to you... It didn't work and-nd so I went to find out answers on my own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry, I should have stayed up longer, I could have had more coffee, I didn't think you'd run away in the middle of the night and hide and hurt yourself and - I'm sorry -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't... I don't think it was up to you what I did. Shouldn't need to feel sorry for that..."

"Did you get my note?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Note? You left a note? Where?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"On the pocket everything you gave me."

Sorta small whimper.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, we didn't look at your pocket everything besides to see you'd left it behind - if you'd sent an email we would have seen that -"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Didn't know that."

"Could you look at it now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't have it. The police confiscated it as evidence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

She is confused but doesn't want to talk about the police right now and it doesn't seem that important to talk about them.

"I um. I said I was sorry and that you were very nice and I hoped we could play together again and and that I was sorry for making you sad but somethings are really important.."

Meelia starts crying a little bit again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This must have felt very very important to you for you to go to such lengths trying to learn more. I just wish you'd felt like you could afford to go slower and talk to us and learn what was going on before you charged in... now they're going to deport you unless you have a startlingly good explanation for your interviewer, I wouldn't even know what strings to pull there and it wouldn't be fair to Poante either, who works very hard for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't think I want to stay. ... 'less it's to talk to red haired people. ..."

Meelia thinks some more.

"Um. Guess I also want to see you and Haemi more which I didn't ex-pect but um. Not gonna stay anyways if I'm 'llowed to go home."

"... you could come with me if you wanted? But but. I don't want to hurt you more or make you be around me when I hurt you before..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you were going to stay and we thought you'd be able to follow the law we'd let you stay with us, of course, we'd forgive you. But we're not going to your planet, no. I don't even think that would be a good idea, not when right now it looks like you did all this on your own without any help and it wouldn't look like that if we went with you and then it happened again. You could write to us, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia cries for a bit but nods at the same time. She doesn't get how she could do it again on her planet but doesn't ask right now.

"s'okay."

"Would write some prolly, but not if it made you feel not-good."

"We'd like to hear from you, if you'd like to keep us updated." Sigh. "They'll probably do your interview quite soon, now that you're awake, but it's basically a formality, there's not much in question besides... why... and no matter why you're going back on the next ship. I'm going to hire you some guards to go with you on the trip who will be - as tolerant of the situation as I can find. Please don't dislocate their joints or give them concussions. Poante has a pinched nerve in one arm and his brain damage tests are not conclusively at par."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"I really didn't mean to do that. Amaliens and animals and monsters if they have bones get better after those things pretty fast once I put the bones back...."

She sniffles a bit, hugging herself.

"... guessin he doesn't want a hug from me or anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't expect him to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense."

"... do you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you would like a hug I'd like that too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia will nod, a bit scared but. Hugs are important especially when you're scared.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish goes over and hugs her as much as is feasible what with the shackles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is good at hugs, even in such difficult hugging circumstances.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pat pat. "I'm going to go catch Haemi up on things, unless you need me for something in which case I can just text her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't need anything right now. She can have a hug too if she wants."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish nods and extricates herself and collects her bag and heads out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia rests for a bit. Her face still hurts and is scabby and arms are sore and the bit where she stabbed herself before doesn't feel perfect and her head feels weirdly light.  She naps for a couple of hours but will wake up if anyone comes to see her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oranges pop in every now and again to change her bandages and bring her toast and a banana for breakfast and ask if she needs to be escorted to the bathroom.

Permalink Mark Unread

She isn't interested in breakfast but will eventually use the bathroom. She's mostly just. Waiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually a blue - not Tish, not Haemi - comes in and sits down beside her.

"I'm Setta Afna," she says. "I'm a judge. I'm here to talk to you about what happened over the last few weeks. Do you understand what a judge is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia glares.

"Yeah. I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you understand what this interview is for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm here to confirm that we have a clear understanding of what happened and which parts of it were crimes and issue a sentence for the crimes if there were any."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, okay."

She wonders if the people who forced the red haired people out of their homes or who set the place on fire will get in trouble. Or who thought they might 'mercy kill' a person (she shivers a bit while remembering that).

She sorta suspects not, but maybe some of it even other amentans won't think is okay?

Permalink Mark Unread

It turns out that she is actually only there to talk about things Meelia did which may have been crimes, though she will solemnly write down anything Meelia would like entered into the official record without making any facial expressions about it. She wants to know if Poante provoked her and if she wants to revise her story about the encounter upon hearing that there's security footage; she wants to know if any of the reds welcomed her to enter their district; she wants to know if it was explained to her on her trip over or before that Amenta has laws people are expected to follow; she wants to know if anyone helped her or encouraged her; she wants to know if she was aware of all the harm she was causing and risking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Poante was trying to keep her from helping people. She didn't mean to hurt him but it was important to leave and she made a decision quickly that turned out to not be the best one.

No, none of the red haired people welcomed her, she says with an accusatory glare. Why did she ask that?

People told her before she went that Amenta has laws that are for the good of everyone that you have to follow and you will get in trouble if you don't. She thinks that if helping people is wrong than it's not for the good of everyone and it's important to help people even when you're not supposed to. Even when you can't help people, it's still important.

Cheep helped her. No one else did, she had to do it all alone. She's brave though, even if she's alone.

"I thought it was possible I could acc-id-dentally hurt the Poante. I thought I would make Tish and Haemi sad. I thought people might be sad if I left the red haired place without showering, but I didn't do that till it was on fire and I had to. I didn't know till later that I might make it so all the red haired people had to leave their homes and then they'd get burned down and and " - she starts crying for a bit at that point - "I didn't know that would happen and I'm sorry about it. I don't think that's what you care about though cause if you did this place might be different. But maybe I'm wrong?"

She has a hopeful expression on her face as she asks that question, in spite of everything.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want to enter into the record that you regret prompting the teardown of the red district, I can note that," says Afna dispassionately. "What kind of help were you hoping to render?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia frowns, annoyed, still with tears in her eyes.

"I didn't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you... decided that providing help to the reds, in the specific fashion you chose, was important enough to commit battery and incitement to pollution hysteria, without having in mind any actual help you would give anyone in the course of this crime spree?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see." She makes some notes on her everything. "Well, I can't issue the sentence I would if you were an Amentan but I can have you deported. Is there anything else you'd like to say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I'd like to be deported please!"

Meelia nods a bunch while tearing up in relief. She doesn't have to fight to go home!

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want you to understand that you are not welcome in Tapa and once you have left it you are not to reenter it. This includes Tapai colony territory on the amalien planet. If you cannot be kept out of Tapai territory by being disinvited we will have to consider stronger measures. Do you understand?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Were any other amaliens present, they would facepalm at the concept that this would discourage Meelia.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Since you're immortal I am going to make a note that you may ask to be reinterviewed about this ruling in thirty years." She makes a note.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhm. Hope you want to talk to me again sooner but sorta 'spect you won't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not forbidding you to write correspondence to Tapai residents or receive Tapai visitors. Just don't enter our spaces."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I cannot guarantee it will be convenient to the ships to drop you off anywhere specific, but if you have a preference I can enter it into the record."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia thinks for a bit.

"Near Lucien or Keetim?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She writes this down.

"Anything else you'd like to say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

So the judge leaves and Meelia is alone in her hospital room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is impatient to leave but will just sorta snooze for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tish and Haemi come by later that afternoon.

"Meelia?" says Tish.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia stops snoozing really quick and tears up when she sees the two blues. She nods, hurriedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We found you some guards who will go with you to your planet and see you off. We think that we found some that won't be - too unpleasant about you having wanted to help the reds. You can send us an email later to let us know how they did - you can have your pocket everything back, to bring with you, and hopefully you'll be able to get internet at some point without going into the city radius."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod nod.

"I'll email you soon as I can if that's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, that's fine. Do you want to meet your guards now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia will blink some of the tears out of her eyes.

"Um. Haemi do you want a hug first..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Haemi hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia hugs back, tearfully. She's ready to see the guards now, if that's what Tish and Haemi want.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're waiting in the hall. Tish goes and gets them, and introduces them as Kamu Kessa and Pelape - "Do you still prefer Milath?"

"I haven't wanted to replace it, I'm fond of it."

"Pelape Milath."

"Pleased to meet you, Meelia," says Pelape. She has an accent in Tapap.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is skeptical of Amentans by this point.

"I don't know whether I'm happy to meet you yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's just a saying," says Pelape.

"I hear you're surprisingly dangerous for such a little person," says Kessa, "so even though word is you're happy to go back home at this point we're going to attach you to a wheelchair and wheel you, on the way to the spaceship. We'll be able to let you loose in your quarters as long as the door's locked. Your mouse will be on the ship too but they want to keep him locked up till we're letting you two off at Keetim, we're not as used to keeping mice where we can see them any other way." He's got a wheelchair ready.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia rolls her eyes a little bit but doesn't say aloud that she can definitely get out of the wheelchair if she wanted to.

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

They haul her into the wheelchair by a laborious process that involves listing a checklist of security procedures out loud as they perform each step so she's never loose, and then Pelape takes a position behind the chair and pushes to the elevator, nodding politely at Tish and Haemi on the way out.

"We're taking a hospital transport to the shuttleport and we'll transfer to a warper in spacedock," Pelape tells her. "Let me know if you have any questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia is distracting herself by figuring out how she could escape. She's not gonna but. It's fun to figure out and actually not to easy. Eventually, she picks up the trick of imagining how things are meant to work if someone doesn't want to get broken and is big and then figuring out how she might be an ex-ception to those things. She almost describes aloud what she's thinkin bout cause it's actually sorta interesting but she doesn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

They get in a truck in the hospital garage; not an ambulance, but a van that appears to normally haul medications and bandages and such. There are protrusions they can secure the wheelchair to and fold-down shelf-benches for the greys to sit on and a driver ready to take them to the shuttleport.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia sits quietly. She is having to work really hard not to start conversations about the cool gymnastics she could use to escape if she wanted to.

Permalink Mark Unread

The greys aren't going to start conversations under these conditions either.

The drive takes half an hour and then they disembark at a service entrance to the shuttleport, present credentials to the security there, and wheel her in to a small shuttle.

Permalink Mark Unread

The shuttle goes up to the spaceport. There is an opportunity for a bathroom break if she wants one and then they put her on the next ship to the amalien world.

"We're going to trade off shifts so one of us will always be with you," Milath explains, as Kessa peels off. "So these are your quarters and I'll be here till it's Kessa's shift and then vice versa. You comfy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. I didn't like being trapped in one place but I imagined different ways to get out so that helped a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you rather sleep the whole way? I was hoping to talk to you but if you're miserable about the quarters I don't mean to insist you stay up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can move around in here so it's better. I don't think I want to nap just cause things are being hard. That's usually when its most important to be awake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. ...what made you interested in helping the reds, if I may ask?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to help people and I thought they might need it since people were mean to them and they seemed scared. Usually there's a reason for that and I was trying to figure it out but then people were way meanier to them then I expected and it made it hard for me to figure things out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How come you chose that way to figure it out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talking to people is usually a good way of figuring things out about them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why did you decide to try to talk to them in person?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cause that's how you talk to people?"

This grey is very confusing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it was mostly that you weren't used to the internet? - that's how most people who want to talk to reds do it, we write to them on the internet. Less scary for everyone involved."

Permalink Mark Unread

"... Oh. I didn't know you could do that."

Meelia will try to remember the internet in case it might be useful again some other time.

"You've talked to them??"

Prolly only to say mean things like the other Amentans but maybe Meelia will be wrong about that this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, some. That's one of the reasons I applied for this posting, they wanted people who'd be - tolerant of the idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of talking to reds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'm not sure what Kessa's deal is, but presumably he saw the same posting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What'd you talk to them about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The reds? Uh, lots of stuff, I've known some of them for years. I've been trying to figure out if there's anything to be done that meets everybody's needs better than the thing that's been looking likeliest to happen. If you want to help them that could possibly be really good news depending on what you try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do really want to help them! I don't know what to try at all cause I don't know what is wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well my first piece of advice is that it very much doesn't help them if people who want to help them loudly announce this and then promptly get arrested for felonies. I'm not sure how to... interpret you... like, you look like an Amentan child but are actually untold hundreds of thousands of years old but in some ways you sort of act childlike and I'm not sure how much of that is your appearance coloring my impression... like, I don't know whether to interpret the way you approached this as immaturity or just your personality individually or simple ignorance or what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I sorta feel that about your species and how it handles reds. You're all really young."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are all really young but I'm not actually confident that's why we handle reds any particular way. The reds aren't any older. Amentan children aren't any worse about reds than the elderly. What... do you know about how we handle reds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I meant your civ-ili-zation being young. Not each of you ind-iv-dually being young."

"Sometimes you yell at them and make them leave their homes and they're really really scared of you and you burnt down all their places and you keep them far away and you think there's something dirty about them that needs to be showered off but you don't seem sad about that for them and you don't seem to care about how hard the being 'polluted' thing sounds like for them."

"... Um. Didn't mean to make it sounds like you were doing those things. Just saw other Amentans doing those things."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- okay. So, most of that is about right, it's true that there is something dirty about them that needs to be showered off - for other people, not them, they can't shower it off. Yelling at them is not actually that - special - like, people are particularly mean to reds sometimes but it's more common to just avoid them, and clean people get yelled at sometimes too. Uh, not all their places have been burnt down, what happened as I understand it was that they cleared out the district you'd been visiting because they were looking for you, and then there was a fire in the emptied district, and then they decided that since red population numbers are going down and small cities are starting to be able to do without them and they'd already moved out all those reds anyway they might as well burn the place down - to clean it and clear it, so they can build new stuff there. This is probably inconvenient for the reds but all of the specific ones you saw are, like, alive, as far as I know, they moved to other districts in neighboring cities. Also, reds mostly - not invariably but mostly - don't mind being polluted in the same way that other Amentans do. It's a genetic thing, they've been selected for it over time, and some of them are certainly miserable about them but typical reds don't - oh, or did you mean that it's hard for them because other people don't want them near them, I guess that's straightforwardly true but it's not something you can solve by - brute force, that'd just be torturing people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's important to not ignore sad things even when you can't solve them. Really really important."

Meelia waits a few beats cause that's really important.

"Also, there was an Amentan who said he'd mercy-kill me if I were a red and not if I were orange, before he figured out I'm not any color. Doesn't feel like the normal type of mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"- well, you wound up in the hospital, and reds can't go to the normal hospital. They have their own doctors but they're not very well equipped and don't have as much training or backup as the orange ones, and transporting you to one would have been a nightmare. He probably thought you were in a lot of pain and that if you were a red you wouldn't live anyway so it would be kinder to end the suffering, I don't actually think that's particularly awful though it does reflect some underlying awfulness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He could I have asked? I was moving and everything - if I was a red I woulda been able to answer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you sure? I would expect there to be some smoke inhalation issues even if you weren't badly burned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was moving around a bunch and had just climbed over things and stuff. They coulda tried re-gard-less."

"... Also I might not understand Amentans super duper well but they didn't sound like they cared too much about mercy-killing a red."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you should be much much more careful about assumptions like that, I think you are much more likely to jump to conclusions than have flashes of insight and the first thing is more likely to be dangerous than the second thing is to alert you to special opportunities, but sure, that's possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That... makes sense and does sorta sound like the type of mistake that I make that gets me into trouble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Maybe this has been fine for you in the past because you're immortal and so is everyone you know and there aren't that many of you and you didn't have much in the way of mass media? But mistakes can spiral out of control and can get people killed, now, so - adjust to be more conservative, I think, or at least get a second opinion before you make a move, I can be that second opinion or I can introduce you to reds on the internet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think my friend Lucien would make a very good second opinion, and also a few of my other amalien friends. But also I really do want to talk to the reds! Also I guess you might be a good second opinion since you seen more reasonable than a lot of Amentans about red things maybe? But also I don't know you very well yet and don't know how much to trust you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you met 'a lot' of Amentans?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I've heard maybe ten Amentans talk about reds?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What castes? What ages? What nationalities? Amentans vary, a lot. For example some of us are reds. You're picking up on a real trend but I think you're, again, kind of jumping to conclusions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tapai, some blues, some others. I'm not very good at telling ages apart."

Hm... something about this is annoying her and she's having trouble figuring it out...

"I think you're cri-ti-ci-zing me for coming to bad con-clusions even though I really think Amenta would look different if most people came to con-clusions that were at least as good as mine about reds. And you don't really seem to be saying what sorta things would be better con-clusions and it sorta seems like you think yours are better but I don't know why I should agree with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your conclusions are not completely off base but I'm really suspicious of your process. Which, you will observe, got a red neighborhood burnt to the ground without helping anyone in it one bit. Do you know what happened the last time there was a really big pollution hysteria incident?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I don't."

"Also I'm really sad about the burning down but. I sorta had to learn a while ago that I can't always blame myself completely when things go wrong and I don't think I burnt down that neighborhood so I'm trying not to pretend like I did. "

"And I think I disagree about whether my helping helped - I think it might turn out that my being curious and trying to figure things out and not being willing to ignore things was useful and good 'ventually. Though right now it was bad and. I wish I had made different choices so the neighborhood wasn't burnt down and people didn't get hurt."

Meelia tears up a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - true you didn't burn down the neighborhood. But it's also true that, for reasons someone in your position could have foreseen with more thought, the neighborhood burned down because of your intervention, and probably wouldn't have any time soon without it. I guess it's possible that it could wind up net good just because it made it really obvious that you wanted to help reds and were very serious about it and that attracted attention from people like me but you really could have accomplished that in some less costly way. If there's a thing you want, you can just go straight for it and hold everyone else responsible for their predictable choices that may interact with that decision, but you could also... predict... the choices... and work around them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorta sounds like how Lucien solves problems."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lucien?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My problem solvey friend. He was sorta in-charge during first contact after I gathered people and helped figured out details and cares a lot about getting things right and being careful and when I left he was very excited about helping the Amentans get settled and helping people talk to each other and figuring out the best poss-ible solutions to lots of different problems. He also doesn't sleep enough but has a monster on his back to help with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He - a monster on his back? How does that help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a brown slime thing that helps him be awake and not nap too much. He uses it when he needs to be extra busy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gosh. I guess if that works for him. I'd love to be introduced if we get the chance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I asked to be dropped off near him or Keetim. If I get dropped off near Keetim I'll prolly see about finding him soon though. Keetim is safe and nice and has Keeta but I want to talk to Lucien about fixing things s'why I'm excited to go home. Want to fix things and what I was doing wasn't helping and he's good at helping in different ways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're going to land near Keetim but then I'm going to be able to get a ride to Chaspanti."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Could I go with you to see Lucien?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, no, you aren't allowed in Chaspanti, it's Tapai territory. He can come to you if he wants."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought Lucien had his own bedroom there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably... but... it's in Chaspanti... so you can't go there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Huh. I'm used to bedrooms being private spaces people who have them get to make the rules about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People can make additional rules about their bedrooms but they can't unmake the existing rules there, like, you can't murder people in your own bedroom."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That sort of rules seems like a different sort of thing than the rule that I can't come in to Chaspanti, but I don't know if Lucien would agree and don't think he'd want me in his room given that rule so it's not super important I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Chaspanti includes all of the locations inside of it. It's a pretty straightforward consequence that you cannot visit the home of a person who lives in Chaspanti if you are not allowed in Chaspanti."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's more straightforward for lo-cal-ized rules over smaller places like a bedroom to override more general rules."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...okay, well, that is the opposite of how most Amentan rules work and you should keep that in mind when trying to interpret them if you can't just ask someone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually Pelape has a shift change with Kessa, and so on, till they reach Keetim's outskirts and put Meelia off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Meelia naps through a bunch of the flight when it stopped being interesting and only wakes up when they land. The first thing she does after landing is give Cheep the biggest hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheep!"

Cheep is so happy to see his Meelia again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pelape has disembarked to make sure that neither Meelia nor Cheep attempt to stow away on the departing shuttle and has packed a bag suitable to camp out while waiting for an airplane from Chaspanti.

Permalink Mark Unread

Keetim is the most densely populated place on the amalien planet, with amaliens and monsters crowding many of the narrow cobblestone streets. The place is brighter and cozier then it seems like it should be given the numerous alleyways and ramshackle construction. The city itself seems obviously alive on first glance, though it can take a second to figure out why that's so obvious. Loose cobblestones slot themselves back into place when moved by foot traffic, buildings bend subtly out of the way to allow crowds through, and doors open on their own accord.

Permalink Mark Unread

And here, on the edge of this city, Meelia spies her friend Lucien, waiting for her arrival with a hug and questions about what exactly happened on her Amentan adventure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Continued in catching up with friends.
