Consider the Plight of the One-Legged Knight
A pair of Kataklik hikers wander into Thomassia

The vastness of the world can really take your breath away.

Here's a mountainside. From three quarters of the way up the peak, you can see the whole of the valley laid out below you, the morning mist rising from the treetops, the sun quietly sliding closer to the foot of the mountain. It's fall, and the leaves on the trees are crimson and ochre and gold. The wind blows fit to slide cold knives under your neck, promising a sure frost and perhaps a snowfall, and the friends of that gust rustle the treetops and make them dance. You can see the river wind its way south, peaking out of the trees here and there when it goes so slow and wide that the forest makes way for it a bit. Uphill there's still the peaks, strung out with bare rock breaking into a high glorious stretch of openness. There's nobody around for miles except two lone figures walking along a bare ghost of a trail, drinking in the view.

And sometimes the vastness takes your breath away in an entirely different manner. Some scant motion, be it the breeze or a passing animal or something else, has dislodged a small stone. In the way of things that stone dislodged another stone, and then three more, and then a larger stone, and soon there are tons of gravel and scree and boulders bounding down the slope towards the two hikers caught in the open. They've drilled for this but there really aren't good answers for this situation. It's an acceptable risk. That doesn't mean they don't try to get to cover before the rockslide shoves them right off the ledge.

Deptka covers Patik as much as possible in that final moment, growling defiance at shale and gravity alike. The rock that drives the pair off the ledge hits Deptka first, and hard, and there's an audible crack as meat shears and bone gives way.

Which means it's Patik who's paying more attention to where they're falling and what's at the bottom of the cliff. It's a giant snake with what looks impossibly like a mirror for a head.

Farewell!

The duo find themselves on a thin layer of snow on the grass lawn outside a hospital, a few ambulances parked where they can be seen if they really crane their necks. It's a pretty large building, and seems quite a bit newer and nicer than the gray concrete housing that surrounds it.

Deptka doesn't scream even though he's oozing quite a lot of blood on the snow as he drops to the ground. He's sucked in the black kerchief covering the lower half of his face and is biting down quite hard on a few layers of fabric. He scrabbles at a pocket on his thigh and manages to draw out a length of cord, but there his dexterity fails him.

Patik can make enough noise for both of them. "Help help help!" She grabs at the cord and looks at Deptka, frantic and agitated. Her hands are waving out to the sides. His pants are black, his shirt is black, it's hard to see exactly where the blood is coming from but she can see it staining the snow.

Snow? she doesn't think, because she's busy at the moment kneeling to feel along Deptka's leg for the break.

A duo of annoyed-seeming security guards rush out and help roll the 2 strangers onto stretchers, together with quiet emergency technicians pushing them into two adjacent treatment rooms kept as close to the entrance as possible. The moment they've been raised and moved indoors, they get a very good and fast painkiller sprayed up their nose that turns off basically all the pain they felt. The EMTs make finger signs at a camera pointed at the entrance before taking the strangers into two adjacent rooms, reaching for clothing shears and unhesitatingly cutting off the clothes of the 2 strangers, taking a good look over them and taking a few rapid steps to see them from every angle.

Right, so, Patik is on board with moving indoors on stretchers. She doesn't have a massive misshapen limb, just an almighty pile of bruises and maybe something broken that's small. She's going to make a grasping, reaching gesture towards Deptka when the hospital (this is obviously hospital staff, she knows what a stretcher is even if this one looks weird, she'll wonder how they got to a hospital so fast later- maybe they were knocked unconsious?) goes to split the two but won't fight them on it.

Deptka's clothes are tough, dark canvas with layers of pockets and something inside just about every one of them. Inside one of those pockets is a folding knife of some sort. Deptka managed to get his hand on it before his pants slid apart after the shears and snaps it open to wave it unevenly in the direction of one of the EMTs.

"Question: Who the cold food are you?"

His words are slurred and choppy and the hand without the knife is spasming without clear significance but he sure means to say something in that sharp language he's speaking.

The EMTs with Deptka shrug and step back at seeing the knife, moving to the corners of the room to put as much distance between themselves and Deptka as possible. He said something, they don't know what, but the knife is more understandable and refusing treatment is always a choice!

With his pants shorn off Deptka's leg can be seen more clearly. It's a hideous mess of pulped muscle and fragmented bone. His shinbones must be in shards, that's the only explanation for the way that part of the leg curves like that, and perhaps worse his knee is involved in the godawful affair, bending sideways. He's still bleeding from scrapes all over his right side but especially from just below the knee.

Deptka tries to roll off the surface he's on, head scanning left and right but not really taking in what he's seeing. He does manage to fall to the floor though. That doesn't improve his attitude at all, though he does drop the knife and hiss a number of short words that don't really connect in any meaningful sentences but do reference biting insects in anatomically unlikely places a lot. The mostly naked man looks more than a bit shocky to the medical eye.

"Deptka? Deptka!" Patik tries to sign at her doctors, her fingers aren't working perfectly but she can make a flat palm and shake it and point towards her comrade's voice.

The doctors with Patik shrug at her, the ones with Deptka cross their arms, thinking to themselves "this rat needs to settle down, why is he fighting like hell against people very clearly doing their best to keep him alive?" They think about the viability of waiting for him to fall asleep or faint to move him so they can free the emergency room, sedating people with knives seems so much more fraught...

Everything hurts and he can hear Patik. He goes for the pocket on his left leg where he keeps . . . something useful, it's a habit, only he's no longer wearing pants. And his right leg hurts a lot more. He should have grabbed the radio beacon, except he doesn't know where it went, he's not wearing pants anymore.

There's people standing around. Their colours are wrong, oh somewhere he lost his glasses. He grits his teeth and glares at them.

Patik points with a wavey hand motion towards where she heard Deptka's voice. "Bring me?"

She's not uninjured. The exposed skin is breaking out into pink patches, especially along her back and her butt, and there's shallow scrapes all over her forearms. She does have two fingers on one hand that are torn up and possibly there's a fracture there somewhere. She's still managing to articulate what she wants and she's making eye contact with the nearest EMT. After pointing she tries another gesture, one hand curled up and moving from her towards where she thinks Deptka is. She can't get the hand to curl up the way she wants but she's not far off the Overlap gesture for 'I help them.'

(She has not yet picked up on the idea that these people might not speak Overlap. Everyone* speaks Overlap.)

*A word here which does not, in its literal form, include the tails of the distribution. It's actually correct to say that everyone has two eyes, not just colloquially correct.

The EMTs with Patik are curious enough to take take her over to Deptka's room, once they've gotten enough of a look and think she can be moved somewhat safely. They drag her as she lies in bed bed, standing slightly in front of her as they take her to the adjacent room with Deptka to do whatever urgent thing she had to help with.

Patik sees Deptka on the floor, with his knife on the ground nearby, still obviously injured, with the people in the room apparently just standing around?

"Help him?" She repeats the curled hand gesture, this time going from one of the people who moved her into this room and directing it at Deptka.

"Deptka Deptka Deptka, lie still." If nobody else is going to help then she's going to try and climb out of this stretcher and do it herself but she's reeeeally not looking forward to that.

Maybe she says a thing that gets the man to take away his knife! The EMTs for this room get ready to start treating Deptka if he looks calm and nonviolent enough, and move to lift him back onto his bed and start bandaging him and taking laser scans to learn what the hell kind of cast or sling or whatever they're going to want for his knee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deptka's lost track of his knife, which is mostly the same thing. He's reassured by seeing Patik. He's not exactly cooperating as they lift him back into the bed but he's not fighting them either. He manages to lift one hand and flicks his pointer finger and middle finger against each other, pointed loosely at Patik. That might translate as "I love you" but the point of making up their own language is that they don't need to translate it into words anyone else understands.

His leg is in a bad way. The muscle and skin around the impact points is crushed and there's a patch larger than his hand that's torn wide open. It's going to be hard to find without an x-ray but if they have one of those, the tibia is shattered into at least four major fragments and multiple smaller pieces, and the fibula has a pair of breaks as well. What's possibly worse is the foot. It's not too bad off on first glance, but it's pale, and it's chill to the touch, and putting a pair of fingers on it shows a very weak pulse. He's still seeping blood out of the mass of musculature below the knee.

His pulse elsewhere is skipping sometimes.

There's a big, perfect height box full of bandages that they roll next to Deptka, and they rush to start using them to help stop the bleeding. The ones from the adjacent room join in, smoothly moving between using and getting more bandages as they get ready to start on a blood transfusion as well. It's... a lot of wound to close and have grow back, to say the least. An ultrasound probe that connects with a phone is pretty free, does trying one show anything relevant here?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's weak but not that concerning flow of blood down the thigh and then an abrupt drop within a handspan of the knee. There's blood collecting around the tissue in that mess of an impact zone. By the time it gets to the foot there's no meaningful blood flow in the arteries. Oh, and there's a few of the previously missing shards of tibia. The pulse coming down the leg is getting weaker by the minute.

Once they've made Deptka enough of a mummy with the bandages, they insert a vascular shunt and get all the tubing needed for an autotransfusion setup to help stop the blood from pooling and possibly get it to more relevant places in the mysterious stranger's body! They'll want an x-ray to know more than just that there are shards of bone but only when there's nothing urgent to do which is not now even slightly!
