She nods.

"I appreciate this. I can pay you for your time too if you want. I brought things to sell when I came."

"I won't turn you down."

Then she'll check local salaries and transfer him an appropriate amount of money for a week's work.

"Thank you."

He draws some blood with weirdly pretty blood-drawing equipment and looks at it under his microscope. He lists three things that he's finding there and four that most people have and she doesn't.

She takes note.

"Thanks. Do you know if any of those seven can survive outside of the human body or in extreme temperatures?"

"None of them are extremophiles but all of them can survive outside the body, they haven't evolved to depend on us yet."

"Might be able to risk opening a portal and sending a message then, with the right precautions. But, if even a quarter of the original deaths were suicides and I let this get out."

She shakes her head.

"I'll probably wait. See if I catch it."

"That makes sense. I'm sorry."

"Thanks. I should be fine, eventually, even if I catch it. I'm willing to risk doing this because I have backups most people don't."

"Backups?"

"I'm worried this might stretch your suspension of disbelief a little too much, but there are magically powerful individuals out there. They can't really act on a large scale, but I'm lucky enough to be personal friends with one of them and he'll bring me back if I die or something else terrible happens."

"That sounds useful, but -

- do you think you'd want to go back, if the way we are is an infection and you get it?"

"I don't know. I'm sure he could fix a disease but, is it the kind of thing you would undo, if you could?"

"- no!" he exclaims. "The way you're describing normalcy sounds like it's - full of ugliness, like no one ever even hopes to make something perfect."

"People do often strive for perfection, but not everyone has to. It seems painful, the way you are."

"It would be like giving up," he says, "I think."

She nods.

"Maybe I'll feel that way. It's hard to know, but this planet doesn't seem like a bad place to live if I do."

"I think we've managed reasonably well considering."

"You're amazing," she says honestly, "It's impressive that you managed to return to your previous tech level at all, let alone as quickly as you have."

"We did have all of the records we needed."

"Still, you very easily could have lost everything. New colonies have been destroyed by a lot less."

"I suppose, if you put it that way."

Glen thanks him again and excuses herself and starts looking into buying a vacuum chamber.

They're not easily come for for layperson use but she can get access to one if she puts some effort into it.

Then she'll put the necessary effort in, selling another set of cubes if necessary.

She'll be as vague as she can about why she needs it.
