The Angel (and the Lizard) in the Garden
Morri and Levi end up in Miracle
Permalink Mark Unread

<It's okay,> she says—or causes her brother to think, one of those.

—and then she suddenly lets go of everyone, falling to the ground and gasping for air. She looks around, and suddenly there's a glowing—hole?—beneath her brother and herself, and they fall, fall through it—

Permalink Mark Unread

He clings tightly to her, whimpering.

-And suddenly they're in a small, dark place. They can hear crickets in the distance, and the sounds of a quiet suburban neighbourhood at night.

Permalink Mark Unread

She remains on the ground, hugging herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

He continues clinging. He's now sobbing a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

They appear to be in a garden shed. In the dark, they (or at least Levi) can faintly make out various tools and gardening supplies. A ride on mower is parked in there, which Levi finds very sinister.

Permalink Mark Unread

She soon stops shivering and merely stays there, extremely still.

Permalink Mark Unread

For his part, Levi mutely wonders where they are.

Permalink Mark Unread

His sister is quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, he cries himself to sleep, wrapping his tail around his sister for comfort.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning, the little boy who lives in the house which the shed belongs to is asked to fetch something from it by his mother. He complies happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Someone is coming,> she says when she sees this.

Permalink Mark Unread

He jerks awake. He looks toward the door, dread on his features.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Friendly,> she clarifies.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's still a little wary.

Permalink Mark Unread

The little boy opens the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

And is greeted by the sight of what appears to be a small angel child and a human-lizard hybrid. He jumps back a bit, gasps, and takes a puff from an inhaler.

"Um, hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Hello,> the boy thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, what are you doing in our shed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Waiting for you.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems flattered. "But why would you be waiting for me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because you were coming,> she explains reasonably.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. I'm going to get my mummy the trowel and come back, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He runs back to the house with the trowel.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi gives his sister a puzzled look.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now he understands everything that was said. Funny how that works.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Back! So, who are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am the Morrígan. My brother does not have a name yet.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello, the Morrígan. Isn't he a bit big not to have a name? My mums say they named me before they took me home from the hospital."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We did not exist before yesterday.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're babies?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She remains silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Happy birthday!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We were not born.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But everyone is born! Otherwise you wouldn't be alive."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We weren't.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not alive? Are you an angel? If you are, why does your brother not have wings? You're real pretty by the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are alive. We come from large glass tubes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's cool. My mums say I came from a test tube, too. Not sure how big it was."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Ours was bigger.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I believe you. Are you guys Miracles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But do you have powers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am talking in your head.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool!" He turns to Levi. "What about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at him quizzically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Translation. Words.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, water, I do water."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's very interesting. Maybe we should get you a name?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<His name will be Levi.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods approvingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a pretty name. Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are made out of monsters. The monster he is made out of is called Leviathan.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like Kaiju?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

One of Maurice's mothers calls out for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've got to go, guys. Want me to bring back some food?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not need sustenance.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does that mean you're not hungry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<It means I do not need to eat.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like to, though?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No. But he would.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, Levi."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks appreciative.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice runs back inside his house, where his mother, a pleasantly plump, mousy haired woman is waiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You looking forward to the boat trip tomorrow, honey?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

He is, but he's also worried about the weird kids in the garden shed. Movies tell him things like that need to be secret for the first two acts.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Morrígan informs her brother of these happenings.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What should we do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Wait.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why isn't he telling the lady?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is 'mum'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is a person who takes care of another person since they start existing.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do we have one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Can we get one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Maybe.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we go outside?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<It will upset them.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<The child who is going to bring us food and his moms.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because we are strange and unexpected.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what do we do now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Wait.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries napping again.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she waits.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!" He's brought half a loaf of bread and some peanut butter.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will not eat it, but she will nudge her brother awake.

Permalink Mark Unread

He devours it gratefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice wont hold a baby's table manners against him.

"I'm going on a sailing ship tomorrow!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The Morrígan does not react.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sailing ship?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She bounces him the concept.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you two going to be okay while I'm gone?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be for two sleeps."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"We we get back, we can play all day. I could paint you both!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not react to this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi makes an expectant sound.

Permalink Mark Unread

She continues to not react.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like your wings." He looks at Levi. "And your tail."

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi smiles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could I touch your wings?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You may.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He does.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are very soft and fluffy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh. Thank you. I have to go again. If I don't see you tonight, I'll be back in a couple of days. You can come inside if you like when we leave."

They do not see him again that day.

Permalink Mark Unread

<We're going after him.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"He said he would be back," says Levi, enjoying the couch and the TV.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes. We're still going after him.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because.>

The TV turns off and Levi finds himself suddenly floating.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Put me down!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<When we arrive there.>

The door opens and they zoom off into the distance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where are we going?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<To their boat.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But Maurice wants us to be a secret."

Permalink Mark Unread

<So we hide.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can't we hide back at the house? It has food. And TV. And showers. And toys."

Permalink Mark Unread

<The boat has that too.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you lying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Maybe no TV.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do we even need to be there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<To be with Maurice.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you worried about him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then whyyyyyyy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Why do you not want to?>

Permalink Mark Unread

He humphs. "Because Maurice will be back soon anyway and his house is nice. And he wants us to be a secret, and boats do not have much room for secrets."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You have never seen a boat.>

And there's the ocean.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oooh. Drop me in there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Drop.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wheeee...." Splash!

Ocean is fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can keep track of him and if he dawdles too much she'll drag him along.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's swimming at speeds far outpacing any other animal.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can keep track, and tug him this way or that towards the boat.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is also generating enormous waves with his powers. And now suddenly there are three of him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes she knew this would happen. Nudge nudge.

Permalink Mark Unread

On the boat, Maurice's mothers are fishing. Meanwhile, Maurice is trying to spot mer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually they're close enough that the Morrígan can land on the boat, not in Maurice's moms' eyesight but in his.

Permalink Mark Unread

He sputters a bit in surprise, before taking a puff from his inhaler.

"What are you doing here?" he whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Standing.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't be silly. You need to be a secret! Did something happen at the house?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then why did you come here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because then no one is separate.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He sighs. "Where is Levi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<In the water.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Despite himself, Maurice grins. "Does he breathe underwater?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, aren't you going to get sunburnt standing there in your..." he decides to use Siobhan's word for it, "all together? My mums make me put sunscreen on when I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not get sunburnt.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that's cool. You alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you should hide before my mums see you."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can see the future. They will not see me.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What if they come over here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I will be gone before they come.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gone where?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Underwater.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can breathe underwater, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not need to breathe.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wish I was like you and Levi."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not have human senses.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am blind and deaf and cannot sense things I touch or smell or taste things.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He is very sad to hear it. Tears are welling in his eyes, even. "I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am not impaired by this.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm confused."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can sense the future and the past and that is sufficient.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you know what this feels like?" Hug!

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not move. <In a certain way, yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would happen if you ate an ice-cream?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<It would be eaten.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would still be cool being all pretty and having wings and seeing the future and not getting sunburnt in hurty places."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are not the type of person who would like it.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is Levi like you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But what about the non seeing and hearing stuff? I don't like sunburn."

Permalink Mark Unread

<He can see and hear.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But does he get sunburn and stuff?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you're both still cooler."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Perhaps you would enjoy being like my brother.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Although I like angel wings best."

Permalink Mark Unread

<They are merely decorative.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But they're pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

There is a mental impression that is almost like a shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there some way you could make me like you and Levi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No. We were built this way.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks disappointed for a sec, but perks up. "That's okay. Tell me if you think of something."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I will.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cause the only way you two could be cooler is if you were rainbow."

Permalink Mark Unread

No response.

Permalink Mark Unread

The three Levis' heads pop from out of the water. "I made friends!" he announces.

A few dozen strange-looking grey children surface, chattering excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's that Maurice?" calls out Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think my mums are coming!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Before he even says that the Morrígan is gone and has dragged the other children underwater.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mary and Sibohan do indeed walk over. "You sounded like you were talking to someone, love."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There were some mer kids!" That is technically the truth.

Permalink Mark Unread

The mer kids are allowed up if they so desire.

Permalink Mark Unread

At the moment they are poking and prodding the strange new child. While most of them have dolphin like flukes, one has legs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will allow them.

Permalink Mark Unread

The legged child is particularly proddy.

Permalink Mark Unread

...okay that is enough prodding please step away from the angel child.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is surprised to find himself unable to prod. He decides to go up and talk to the people on the boat. Maybe they'll know about the lizard monster and the angel.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does he actually speak English? Or does anyone on that boat speak mer?

Permalink Mark Unread

He can speak English, for he is in fact half human.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then he will also find himself unable to go up there.

Permalink Mark Unread

He squeaks in protest.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Maurice says we should be secret.>

Permalink Mark Unread

The boy raises a questioning eyebrow. Aside from the weird voice inside of his head that sounds like his own thoughts, he does not know who this Maurice person is.

Permalink Mark Unread

<The boy on the boat,> she clarifies.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who are you?" the boys says in mer.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am the Morrígan.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<My name.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But what are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<The Morrígan.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He rolls his eyes. "And what is that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Me.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at Levi. "Is she dumb?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

And now Michael is in a suddenly-appearing underwater whirlpool. My, what a surprisingly coincidental happenstance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you need to be secret?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because Maurice prefers it.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"See, that's better than being all dumb about questions. Are you two Miracles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

More whirlpooling. <No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"THEN WHAT ARE YOU?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am the Morrígan.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What does that mean?" he says wearily.

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is what I am.>

Permalink Mark Unread

An idea strikes him. "How are you different from me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am not human nor mer.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Hmm, he decides to pursue this further. "Where did you come from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Another world.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you and the other one the same kind of thing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<That depends on what you mean by 'kind of thing.'>

Permalink Mark Unread

He tries to find the appropriate mer word. "Species?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How is the lizard one different from you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He was created from different parts.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of the same thing, or two different things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Two different things.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, did a scientist make you? And what were the things?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes. The things were a parahuman and a giant monster.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is a parahuman?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<A superpowered human from another world.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Trying to get info out of this girl is exhausting.

Permalink Mark Unread

This girl is not in the business of being informative to random grey children. She regards him coolly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanna get fish?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi has had fish, they are squirmy and tasty.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not need to eat.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But it's also fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

She telekinetically fetches a fish passing by and brings it to Michael. <Not very much.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He starts gnawing at it. "But eating is fun, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is not.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes it is!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mental impression of a shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then let's fight!" He growls.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I'll win.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not without your stupid cheaty powers."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Can you remove your enhanced strength and agility and ability to breathe underwater?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those are just parts of my body!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<They are no different than my powers.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you can breathe underwater too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not need to breathe.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then let's fight!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can see the future. I will win.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He crosses his arms. "I don't believe you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She mimics him exactly and at the same time he says these things.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still don't."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Then try to fight me, and I will not use telekinesis, and I will win.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He attacks!

Permalink Mark Unread

She can predict his movements and dodge all of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is going to claim it doesn't count if she just dodges.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she will take exactly the necessary actions to immobilize him completely.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, okay you win."

Permalink Mark Unread

She releases him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See, now I know for sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I always win.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, this is a healthy attitude to have.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Maurice's moms are gone,> she informs her brother.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<They are no longer around Maurice, we do not need to be secretive.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we go say hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you lift us onto the boat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wheee!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't be so loud, you two."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Whee.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles. "Were those mer down there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Were they pretty?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You would find them so.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wanna see them."

Permalink Mark Unread

So she modulates her song in order to inform the mer of this.

Permalink Mark Unread

A dozen mer children surface. Maurice is having happiness spasms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, I don't want to be rude, but could you two go underwater so I can show my mums?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She goes underwater and pulls her brother with.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mums, mermaids!"

There is much fussing and photo taking. They are sensible enough not to offer fish.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will patiently wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi will wait less patiently.

Permalink Mark Unread

And if that half-mer boy that speaks English starts thinking about talking about them she'll pull him under.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, is that boy your brother or something?" says a suddenly underwater Michael.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"The brother or the something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He remembers the protocol. "Is he your brother?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi is surprised by this. Maurice is nice and all, but he doesn't remember him in the tubes.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not elaborate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, if he's your brother, how come his mums don't know about you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<They do not know he is our brother yet.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How does that work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We will adopt him.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Won't his mums mind?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Isn't it more like they will adopt you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi seems disappointed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She seems impassive.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long have you known him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Two days.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's pretty quick to decide someone's family."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can see the future.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Can you tell me mine?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You will swim a lot.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know that! Tell me something important!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Then it will change.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, tell me something bad I should avoid."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You should go to the beach soon.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You will meet friends.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh. Are you gonna come?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles. "Should be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You will find it so.>

Permalink Mark Unread

On the boat, Maurice is begging to be allowed to go swimming with the mer-children.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps she can nudge one of his moms into being more receptive to the idea.

Permalink Mark Unread

Letting their son swim in the middle of the ocean with strange sea children is not likely.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sees that she is unlikely to nudge them further without upsetting Maurice and decides to leave it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Also, the weather is starting to turn bad.

Permalink Mark Unread

As she'd expected. Which means the Thing Doers will be arriving soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, are you two going to be alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can come back with us if you want, I think there's going to be a storm."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We will stay with Maurice.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, okay." He and his tribe mates swim away.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she waits.

Permalink Mark Unread

As the weather gets worse and worst, she might notice that Maurice and his mothers are no longer on their boat.

Permalink Mark Unread

No of course not she noticed they'd have left long before and is already dragging her brother towards the island. They should arrive about two minutes after Maurice and his mums.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice is still a little shaken by the rescue, and a little in awe of their rescuer, so he decides to be truthful. "Mums, there's something I should tell you..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh look here's an angel child and her lizard brother.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice's mothers are...surprised to say the least.

Mary shrieks, Sibohan just leaps back in surprise.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Hello,> the angel child says in their head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi waves. "Hi."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who-who are you?" asks Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am the Morrígan. This is my brother Levi.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"They were born a few days ago and now they live in our shed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see..." says Sibohan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mental impression of agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you two Miracles?" asks Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are not.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What are you then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are from another world.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're really cool. They don't even get sunburnt."

Permalink Mark Unread

He is ignored for the time being. "Why are you here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are adopting Maurice. He is our new brother.>

Permalink Mark Unread

The mothers stare at her.

"What?" says Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, I already have parents, Morri."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I said brother not son.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, that makes more sense."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excuse me, what's this all about?" asks Mary sternly.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Maurice is our new brother,> she repeats.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You aren't explaining yourselves!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are the Morrígan and Levi. We come from another world. Maurice is now our brother.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Siobhan frowns. "And why have you decided our son is your brother?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is self-evident.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not from our point of view!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mental impression of a shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't mind being your brother. Wanna come explore?"

He starts running towards the greenery.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maurice, wait!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She follows him.

Permalink Mark Unread

So does Levi! He leaves a trail of water behind him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's really pretty, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You would find it so.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do find it so!"

Permalink Mark Unread

And suddenly a tiger is bursting out from the trees! On its back is a small, naked, glowing child.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am the Morrígan, and these are my brothers Maurice and Levi. We are admiring the greenery.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice is scrambling backwards from the tiger and puffing on his inhaler.

"...Does nobody else worry about sunscreen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? And what's that thing you're holding?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<That is an inhaler. He needs it because of his lung condition. You have a friend who can help him.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What friend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<His name is Evan.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Evan? He's my brother."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, how can he help?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He will know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at Maurice and Levi. "Do you know what she's 'talking' about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really."

Permalink Mark Unread

She remains silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could I pet the tiger?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You may."

Permalink Mark Unread

While Maurice pets the tiger, Levi asks his sister a question. "Why do some people have those pants things and others don't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Social reasons I do not care about.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, so they do come off?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to ride Squishy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice is on the tiger's back before he can even answer.

Permalink Mark Unread

She will follow him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi speeds alongside them.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Morri is tackle hugged by another undressed glowing child. "Birdy girl, birdy girl, birdy girl!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Correction: she is attemptedly tackle-hugged. She can still see the future and still has extremely powerful and versatile teekay. Moira stays a healthy distance from her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"BIIIIIRDY!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am the Morrígan.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Chirp chirp."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh, hi, Moira. Guys, this is my sister."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi, Moira."

Permalink Mark Unread

<These are my brothers Maurice and Levi.>

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at the two boys. "Why is that one a lizard?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He was born that way.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Can I hug you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But-but-birdy!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She really likes birds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am the Queen of Birdies."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am not a bird.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's the wings."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am aware. I am also aware that typically birds only have two wings. I have more. Therefore I am not a bird.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do kinda look like a bird."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nuh uh, these things are sub-jec-tive."

Permalink Mark Unread

Now Maurice is upside down. <You are mistaken,> she repeats.

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles. "You're funny."

Permalink Mark Unread

She puts him on the tiger again. <You are correct.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you said Martin's brother can help my lungs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He will turn you into a Miracle.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really mean it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Annnnnd now he's jumping up and down in excitement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, how's Evan going to do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You should ask him.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will, on one condition."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You will regardless of whether I let you hug me or not.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can see the future.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will never give in!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You will still not prevent Maurice from becoming a Miracle because of it.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be kinda mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can hug me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Fine." Hug ensues.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is satisfactory.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we go find Evan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He dismounts from the tiger. "Mind if I speed you guys there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He Eskimo kisses the tiger. "I'll be back soon, Squishy."

And they're on the beach again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Evan is swimming. There appears to be a grey boy playing with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

That would be the half-mer.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Evan! Weird kids! Wait, who's that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"His name's Seal, says he's half mermaid." He turns to the other boy. "Are those the kids you were telling me about?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Seal pouts. "Half-mer! My mother's the mermaid! And yes, don't ask the girl anything, she'll just answer dumbly and spin you or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Hello.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"He wants you turn this boy into a Miracle."

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice grins and waves.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, that'd be cool, I guess, but how would I do that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

What's that? That looks like Evan having a stroke of inspiration.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait, idea, idea, idea!"

He runs out of the water, Seal following curiously behind him.

"Do you have the virus inside you?" he asks Maurice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, it's why I gotta be extra careful with my asthma."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then follow me!" He starts racing towards the mountain.

Permalink Mark Unread

She follows them, too. And if Levi doesn't come she drags him with.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leads them all through the jungle, to an enormous staircase set into the side of the mountain.

"Maybe someone should carry Maurice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can do that.>

And now Maurice is floating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Much giggling.

Permalink Mark Unread

At the top of the staircase is a large silver door with an infinity symbol on it. Evan, still dripping wet from the sea, steps onto a grey square in front of the door, which proceedes to open.

"Come on in."

Permalink Mark Unread

They do.

Permalink Mark Unread

They enter into a large lobby that wouldn't look out of place in a grand hotel, mainly because it was copied from one. Evan leads them down many strange hallways, until they eventually wind up in a laboratory of some sort. In it, what looks like Martin's twin is working on something.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, Evan-what the Hell?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Hello. I am the Morrígan. These are my brothers Maurice and Levi.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks at Seal. "Is that your brother, too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm Seal, I'm half-mer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool. So what are you doing here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Evan will turn my brother into a Miracle.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How? And are you two Miracles?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are not. Evan will know what to do.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then what are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Aliens.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But your brother's human?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How does that work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We adopted him.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quick, out of the way before the idea goes away."

He shoves Martin's twin out of the way, and proceeds to make some machines mix some chemicals.

Permalink Mark Unread

All according to plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice seems nervous. "What's going to happen, Morri?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You will be very sick for a while and then be a Miracle.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know what my Miracle will be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No. I cannot see that far.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then how do you know it'll be okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because I understand Evan's power.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you stay with me while I'm sick?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

And Evan's done. He hands Maurice a beaker full of something pale blue.

"Drink this!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He does so. Suddenly he's everywhere, in all senses of the word, he can do anything, know everything-and now he's just the same old Maurice again.

"That felt tingly."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You will be cured,> she announces.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't feel sick at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did I skip that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you guys have parents?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He does. Levi and I do not.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you said you were brothers."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We adopted him.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then shouldn't you share parents?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poor orphans."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are not orphans.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you don't have parents."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We never had parents. So they did not die. So we are not orphans.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still sounds orphan ish. Maybe aphan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's apt."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Seal suddenly makes his face lose all expression. "I am the Morrigan. You are mistaken."

Permalink Mark Unread

Now Michael is upside down and being shaken.

Permalink Mark Unread

As a child who lives underwater and regularly tussles with children larger and stronger than him, Michael is not entirely unfamiliar with this. "I am the Morrigan. I will hold you upside down now. I am the Morrigan."

Permalink Mark Unread

And now he's spinning, much faster than he ever has. Still upside down.

Permalink Mark Unread

When he's dropped, he's looking very woozy, and actually grinning. "At least I have sensible pants ideas. I am Morrígan." Too dizzy to talk now.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he's upside down again.

Permalink Mark Unread

He just looks at her and giggles. It's a strange, musical sound.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am the Morrígan, I will hang you upside you down over and over."

Permalink Mark Unread

And now Stan is upside down again and they're both being shaken from side to side. Occasionally hitting their heads in ways that will conveniently not cause any brain damage.

Permalink Mark Unread

Basically invulnerable and immune to motion sickness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Michael does not like being hit in the head.

Permalink Mark Unread

The remaining children take up their sword. Aside from Maurice who is telling them to stop being mean to his little sister.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fine.

She screams.

In their heads.

It is exactly the most unpleasant thing any of them has ever heard in their lives.

Permalink Mark Unread

The children clasp their hands over their ears and yell. Moira and Evan even fall to the floor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What just happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She stops.

<I made them stop being mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"She-she, screamed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But it was inside us."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Now you will no longer be mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're mean, Birdy!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"We just gave your brother the Miracle! Aren't you even going to say thank you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You would have done it anyway. And you were mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you even know what that word means?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes. It means she held a belief that was in conflict with reality.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice takes Morri's hand. "Morri, I know they were being mean, but I still think we should say thank you for making me a Miracle."

Permalink Mark Unread

<'Thank you for making Maurice a Miracle',> she sends with a perfect mental impression of Maurice himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, how long until I feel sick?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The books says a few hours."

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks to Morri for confirmation.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mental impression of a nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, that means we have hours to play."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Despite his horrible bird sister, the children can't help but feel fond of the little baseline. They show him the time room.

Permalink Mark Unread

...the time room is unsettling. She does not join them in there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi pocks his tongue out at her from the time room.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is impassive and merely waits for them to decide to leave.

Permalink Mark Unread

He leads the children in some light teasing for a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are they going to be mistaken again?

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she actually affect them in the room?

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course she can, they're slower than she is, not faster.

Permalink Mark Unread

Damn. Anyway, onwards to kitchen, where food is devoured. Then they show Maurice the garden, where prettiness is observed!

Permalink Mark Unread

Relative prettiness, sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi seems to be more popular with the other kids.

Permalink Mark Unread

As it was seen, so it shall be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Martin seems to be trying, though. "I'm sorry for making fun of you earlier. I know what that's like."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not care.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay then. So, you see the future?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How far?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<A few hours. It depends on what I'm looking at.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are people harder than rocks?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense. What's your world like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Bad to live in.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<More evil people with powers, worse giant monsters.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm glad you and your brothers are safe now. How'd you get here, anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I have dimensional powers. I took us here.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cool! Could you show us without sending yourself somewhere else?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No. My portals are impossible to look through.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you control where they go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Sometimes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Have you used them much?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You remind me of my cats."

Permalink Mark Unread

She is silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep, definitely a Rupert."

Permalink Mark Unread

Still silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like your name."

Permalink Mark Unread

<It was given by our creator.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What were they like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Obsessed.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think he'd be proud?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"My mummy would probably want to study you and stuff."

Permalink Mark Unread

<For what purpose?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"To understand you."

Permalink Mark Unread

<How will she do this?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think she'd want samples of your blood and your DNA, maybe run some scans on your brain and x-rays."

Permalink Mark Unread

<She will be bewildered.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's science for ya."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I could tell her what she will find.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What would she find?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<She will not do this in the next few hours so I do not yet know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Also, she might not take your word for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

<That is unfortunate.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mummy's nice, though, she won't do anything hurty to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

<That is for me to determine.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How'd you meet Maurice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<We appeared in his house when we came to this world.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why'd you decide he was your brother?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because he is.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should work on answering people's questions."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I answer the questions I want answered.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But if you answered questions a little better, you wouldn't be asked so many."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Nevertheless.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, what powers do you have?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Telekinesis, clairvoyance, pocket dimensions, interdimensional travel, the psychic song.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you actually talk?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could I hear it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I mean, could you say something now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I could.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you please do so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I prefer not to.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice strolls up to them. "What's wrong with talking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I prefer not to.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, you don't think we'll not like your voice, do you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not have expectations about whether you will like the sound of my voice.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would be pretty."

Permalink Mark Unread

She is silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's play a game."

Permalink Mark Unread

She will follow them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tag, you're it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

This seems like a pointless sort of game but then all games are pointless to the telekinetic clairvoyant child.

She tags Seal.

Permalink Mark Unread

He tags Maurice!

Permalink Mark Unread

...Who is having a hard time tagging anyone because they are all superhuman and he is not.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can make him fly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whee!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Now he can compete with the other kids. She finds the optimal velocity for Maurice to have fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is tagged a few times.

Permalink Mark Unread

...only when it would amuse her brothers. She can see the future after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, Maurice starts looking a bit unwell.

"Guys, I don't feel so good..."

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is starting.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um, what do we do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He should rest.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take him to my bedroom."

Permalink Mark Unread

She does.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do we do now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Wait.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Manifesting hurts. He'll need painkillers, water...a bedpan or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

She can see the future. She can find these things.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about his parents? Or our mum?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He will be happy if his mothers are fetched.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...But will they be happy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not care.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if you care about your brother, you should."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I care about their happiness as it affects his. They will be happier if he is healthy and lives forever and so will he.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But they might be afraid of you now."

Permalink Mark Unread

<It will pass.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think Evan's right."

Permalink Mark Unread

Indifference.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Caring is what people do."

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, don't be silly."

Permalink Mark Unread

More indifference.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought so."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Your conclusions are mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That must be your favourite telepathic word shape."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Would you prefer me to use a different word shape to inform you you are drawing incorrect conclusions from the data? This would not happen if you stopped trying to model me the way you are doing.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You do act like my sister. Except quiet."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not know your sister. That may perhaps be the case.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Zaneta bursts into the room. "What have you done to this boy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He will become a Miracle and live forever,> says psychic angel child into Zaneta's brain.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...The creepy angel thing made me. Don't make her angry."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at Evan, then at the angel and the lizard child. "What."

Permalink Mark Unread

<He is mistaken. I requested that he do it. Then I made him think of a way to do it. Then he did it.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you really going to believer her? She doesn't blink!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Levi's alright, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

She looks at Michael. "And who are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seal. My mama's a mermaid if you're going to ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

She notices how dreadfully still the angel child is. "Neither of you are actually human, are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope. Morri knows more, but she's kinda being silly right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Half of our structure is alien human, the other half is alien monster.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're from another world, it's weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can see the future,> she supplies.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice's mothers run into the room, looking deeply worried. This does not improve when they see their son.

"What have you done to him?" shouts Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

<He is turning into a Miracle. He will live forever.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's Manifesting?" Sibohan sounds like she's on the brink of tears.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

They both break down weeping, hugging their son.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Little girl, do you realise what you've done?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Saved his life.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Manifestation is dangerous."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Not when Evan does it.>

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns to Evan. "Is that true?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know, terrifying but boring bird thing thought of it!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because I saw the future and it was true.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Zaneta decides to go for a more diplomatic approach. She bends down, looking Morri right in the eye, although she knows this is likely pointless. "Child, you seem to mean well for your brother." Maurice's mothers both glare at Zaneta, but she ignores them for now. "But we need to take him to the hospital, so they can look after him till he's all better. And we need to run some tests on you and Levi. Is that alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"They really don't like being separated, or she doesn't, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might have to be taken to a separate building for some of the tests. Is that something you can cope with?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

She picks up Maurice very gently. "I'll be back for you shortly, everything will be fine," she tells Maurice's mothers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So she says," says Mary through the tears, glaring at Morri.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Zaneta is already at the hospital.

Permalink Mark Unread

Morri meets Mary's gaze impassively.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Oh, what's the point? You didn't offer any explanation on the beach, why should you now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry Mrs. Maurice's Mummy. Morri's just...shy."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"She also likes saying that."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I say this when it is true.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just so you know, Morri does not like people being Mistaken, and will hang them upside down. She is just trying to help."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is mostly correct, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She likes me, and Maurice, and being near me and Maurice, and floating, and singing, and not being Mistaken."

Permalink Mark Unread

Also mostly correct.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yay, not Mistaken!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Indeed not.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"She uses big words because she's older."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not use words.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. So I know more big words!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He does not know what dancing is, but he does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice's mothers just look on in bafflement.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wouldn't try getting anything out of her. She's basically a cat with wings that doesn't like ear scratches. I assume, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

That is correct.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zaneta returns. "Are you two ready now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you keep up with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi holds out his arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want me to carry you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay then." She picks him up, and zips off.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she locks herself to them and goes with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll find herself in what looks like a waiting room in a very modern hospital. There are doctors and nurses around, who regard them with less bafflement than you might expect.

"Do you want to see Maurice before we start the tests?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

She leads them both to Maurice. He's lying unconscious in a hospital bed, hooked up to some monitoring equiptment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are there tubes in him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those are to make sure he has enough water while he's resting, and so he can get medicine that'll keep him from hurting so much."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can keep him asleep until it's over.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to discuss that with his mothers. I'm afraid you frightened them very badly."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you understand why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"If this happened again, would you do anything differently?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You wouldn't maybe try to explain things a little better to Maurice's mothers?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But it would've meant they were less distressed."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you understand why that might be considered more desirable?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then why not take that onboard in future?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because I do not care.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most would not consider that an excuse, child."

Permalink Mark Unread

Indifference.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This discussion is not over."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am aware.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't intend to sound mean, but this is important, for you and Maurice. You don't want to make your brother unhappy, do you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then consider in future that caring, or at least doing a decent imitation of caring, for others might maximise his chances of happiness."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can see the future. He will be upset that I do not care about his mothers, but he will prefer knowing this is true to being lied to and thus believing otherwise. I will minimize the distress of others when this makes my brothers happy. By the time Maurice wakes up there is only a small chance this will still be a problem.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Good girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least you're quiet."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not speak.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was speaking figuratively, little one. Do you understand?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

What follows is a lot of tests. MRI scans, X-rays, DNA and blood tests, some tentative examinations of their powers....

Permalink Mark Unread

She is opaque to MRIs and X-ray scans. She has no blood to speak of and her interstitial fluids do not have anything recognizable as DNA.

Her powers are straightforward: she has extremely versatile, extremely powerful, extremely granular telekinesis; she can see a few hours into the future with very precise detail but mostly sticks to probability distributions; and she has an always-on psychic "sound" which she can modulate to cause people to think certain things and uses to communicate. She is deaf and blind but her future sight is a good enough substitute. If she uses her first two powers too much she is temporarily disabled—or so she informs them after some prodding, as she refuses to demonstrate the effect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi is physiologically very similar to his sister. However, he seems to have all the usual human senses, in addition to his ability to perceive water for about a mile around him. He can manipulate water with a fairly fine degree of precision, and he can accelerate himself to very high velocities, leaving water in his wake. Then there's his ability to duplicate himself when submerged in water.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can also shapeshift.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes him learn how.

Permalink Mark Unread

And now he's all human looking and Caucasian.

He fiddles with his new ears. "What are these for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Hearing.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I could do that before!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Your sensory organs work differently than a human's.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He looks down. "At least that's still normal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should really get you two some clothes."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Your phenotype is still half human.>

Hers mostly isn't, she is more statue than human, but she does not object to wearing clothes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll make people more comfortable. Do you consider yourself a girl, incidentally?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Indifference.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will it bother you if people continue doing so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about we go see Maurice again?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Please.>

Permalink Mark Unread

When they get to his room, Maurice's mothers are already there. They eye Morri suspiciously.

Permalink Mark Unread

She ignores them and watches her brother.

Permalink Mark Unread

He is asleep. Occasionally he twitches.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They say there's growths on his back," says Mary, worriedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

<They will become wings.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Maurice is growing wings.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Miracle characteristics are partially decided by conscious and subconscious preferences, and they seldom manifest in ways the owner actually objects to. Maurice wanted to have wings.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"He won't be...I'm sorry, but he won't be like you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Not in the sense you mean, no. He will be himself. With wings.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"He wants to be like his sister!" exclaims Levi, happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's modest."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I believe they would be upset if Maurice was more like me.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Because I am too different in a way they do not like.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's-it's hard to explain," adds Siobhan.

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is not. I do not experience the full spectrum of emotions they do, and I do not care for most things they do. They would prefer if Maurice did.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But she loves Maurice!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<That is correct.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you can be our mums, too!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...We'll see."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is thinking about it, too. Morri is very smart."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I believe you would be happier if they were your mothers.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"And your mothers," he says very firmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"When will Maurice wake up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<His awakening is beyond my sight.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...What do we do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Wait.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Actually, we need to figure out where you'll be living. School, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I will not attend school.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That remains to be decided."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I have already decided.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Plenty of children your age decide they will not be going to school. That is usually not the case."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Plenty of children my age are newborns.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I imagine being treated as a newborn would not suit you."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Neither would being treated as a human child.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is still something that must be considered."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am not going to attend school.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maurice will be."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Then I will accompany him. I will not attend.>

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs lightly. "I fear that's an academic distinction."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would involve a lot of being quiet and sitting still. I'm sure accomodations for floating can be made."

Permalink Mark Unread

...agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's school?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She pushes the concept into his mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, like you make me learn?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<But slower.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How about I take you back to the island while we sort everything out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No. I will wait for Maurice to wake up.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That won't be for several days."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I will stay here for several days.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"And what about you, Levi?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to come with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Boy this is not sadness and conflict but it sure does look like it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's wrong, Morri?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You and Maurice will be in different places.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not forever."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll visit you and Maurice everyday. It's just I'm not as good at not doing anything as you."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I will ponder.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ponder what?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<What I will do.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He hugs her. "I love you. And I think I'll love Maurice, soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

She permits this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry about this. I know what if feels like being away from someone you care about."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I believe you are mistakenly extrapolating from your own emotions.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You are distressed. That's all I need to know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes Levi's hand. "If you need me, child, I can be here in a heartbeat. Or whatever it is that sustains you."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I understand.>

Permalink Mark Unread

And the two are gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she watches Maurice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You really do love your brother, don't you?" asks Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

<That would be the most accurate comparison.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You barely know our son. Why him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He makes the mosaic beautiful.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What mosaic?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Of the future. I see all possible futures. It's beautiful. And the mosaic around him is most beautiful of all.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Siobhan smiles, wanly. "I'm not sure how I feel about this. I suppose the future would be beautiful with Maurice in it."

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is most beautiful when he is happy.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you really make him feel less pain?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I hope you're already doing so."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are welcome.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, Maurice's mothers have to eat and sleep. They do so reluctantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't. She watches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sometimes they try to make conversation with her. Mostly they tell her about Maurice.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is not a good conversation partner but she is very interested in Maurice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's an old soul. You know what that means, Morri?" asks Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder what his Miracle will be," wonders Siobhann, a little sadly.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am afraid that is beyond my sight.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then how'd you know those buds would grow into wings?"

Said buds are well on their way, incidentally. So much so that the hospital is trying to keep Maurice on his side.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can see hours, not days into the future. And I can see everything, including his skeletal and muscle structure.>

Permalink Mark Unread

An idea strikes Siobhann. "You could diagnose illness with a glance, couldn't you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could help a lot of people, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we could arrange something with the hospital."

Permalink Mark Unread

<That is a possibility.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maurice would like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you think he makes the mosaic beautiful?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He makes beautiful things. The mosaic glows with him. It is impossible to explain to one who does not see the mosaic, and I could show you it but you would forget.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Must be lonely."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Not while I have my brothers.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speaking of which, Zaneta called. Levi will be dropping by today. Sure you already knew that."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I did.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"He might be bringing some of Zaneta's children. Is that alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Mary looks at Maurice again. "Do you know if he's dreaming?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<His brain exhibits patterns typical of REM sleep.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Can you tell what he's dreaming?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Not in detail. Only in general terms >

Permalink Mark Unread

"How general?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Themes, feelings, major aspects.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could you tell us what he's dreaming about now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<People who are important to him, and exhilarating things.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you...do you ever wonder what dreaming would be like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Somewhat.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I find it odd your brother sleeps. Does he need to, strictly speaking?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He does not.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a nurse, you know. You two are medical marvels."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We are not humans. It is not that unexpected for aliens to be very different.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You draw energy from nothing. That's unprecedented. Sure, Miracles get their energy from elsewhere, but they all still eat and breathe."

Permalink Mark Unread

<We perhaps also draw energy from elsewhere.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I recall you mentioning you were half human. That accurate?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How does that...affect you, for lack of a better word?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<How does being a whole human affect you?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm, how would you say you're different from your 'monster parent'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am sapient.>

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Clearly."

Permalink Mark Unread

<The Simurgh is not,> she elaborates.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, got that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi. Hug. "Hello, Morri!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Hello, little brother. How has your day been?>

Permalink Mark Unread

He frowns. "I'm as tall as you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<And a few seconds younger.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does that make us twins?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<That is a possible interpretation of it.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I killed a dolphin today!"

Maurice's parents grimace.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Why?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cause they're mean and me and Michael were hungry."

Permalink Mark Unread

<That makes sense.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should try it sometime."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Why?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cause' it's fun, and tasty."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not prefer to eat.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But it gurgles in your tummy!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"How's Maurice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Asleep.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is he going to wake up soon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<It will take some days still.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why is his skin getting all rainbows?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is one of his Miracle powers.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's it good for?"

This inspires another less than charitable look from his mothers.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not yet know the full details of his Miracle.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was sort of hoping he'd get a tail."

Permalink Mark Unread

<It is not impossible he will.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He claps. "Have you moved at all since yesterday?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't that get boring?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not get bored.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zaneta says you can come stay once Maurice has woken up."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Actually," says Mary, "we've been thinking you might be happier near Maurice."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zaneta's been discussing...custody arrangements with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I know.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have a room spare for you two."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Thank you.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's almost cute, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

<What is?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"That silence of yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Morri is a cat, Morri is a cat!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She slowly rotates in place to face Levi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am similar to a cat. I am not a cat.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Feather cat, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

That works.

Permalink Mark Unread

He giggles. "If you're feather-cat, what am I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Lizard.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He humphs. "You get to be two things."

Permalink Mark Unread

<A feather-cat is only one thing with two nouns.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well I want to be that!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Lizard-boy,> she suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lizard boy and feather-cat!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mary and Siobhann actually laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Her silence makes them laugh more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Such is life.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm going to assume you won't be needing a bed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<That is correct.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything you'd like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Negation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Travel light, do we?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Any opinion on decor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You?" she asks Levi.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like fishes!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. "I hope you're content with wallpaper."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can keep fish alive.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Not sure what you mean there," says Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Without water.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wouldn't that be cruel?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Fish do not experience suffering.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I meant pictures of fish. Real fish are for eats."

Permalink Mark Unread

<That can also be provided.>

And now they all experience the hallucination that goldfish the size of footballs are swimming around the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Suddenly, Levi is a lizard again, and trying to eat the fish.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well she can use her telekinesis and song to make it seem like he is in fact eating the illusory fish.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can just create living things like that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<They are merely illusions.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you're tricking your brother?" asks Mary, warily.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am enriching his make-believe game.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?" says Levi, mouth full of pretend fish.

Permalink Mark Unread

She repeats it.

Permalink Mark Unread

He spits out the imaginary fish. "Michael says I shouldn't let you do stuff like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Like what?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mind controlling me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Confusion. <I was not mind-controlling you.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you changed the way I thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I did not. All your actions were your own.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes frustrated lizard noises. "You tricked me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

More confusion. <You knew that fish do not exist out of water and that I cannot create solid things, you had all the necessary information to infer the fish were not real.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't know what you can and can't do!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I can see the future, move things with my mind, and project my psychic song.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How do I know you're saying the truth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Extreme confusion. <I do not lie.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But how do I know that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<By observing that everything I say is true.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"... I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Why do you think I would lie to you?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Michael said that's what big sisters do."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Excuse me for a moment,> she says, and telekinetically opens the door then picks the path that will most quickly lead her to Michael.

Permalink Mark Unread

As it happens, Michael is playing with his sister. Well, cousin/half sister, but who's quibbling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Michael is picked up, dragged up until they're not underwater anymore, and shaken in the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ahhhgfhghgh! Whhhhhhhy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You have told my brother that I lied to him. You were mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just said that's what big sisters do!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am his big sister. I do not do it. Therefore that is not what big sisters do.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mine does!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<If your sister does not like you, that is not my or my brother's problem. Please do not offer him advice again.>

And she releases him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He immediately surfaces. "Hey, my sister loves me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Then why does she lie to you?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's like joking."

Permalink Mark Unread

<No, it is not.>

And back she goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did you do?" he snarls.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I informed Michael that I do not lie and that he should refrain from giving you advice about older sisters in the future as his sample is biased and he does not know much about them.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you shake him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes annoyed lizard noises. "But he's my friend!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes, and he was mistaken and made you think I lied to you.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's going to think he'll get shaken all the time if we play!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<If he does not set you and Maurice against me, he is not.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"You take things too serious."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You were upset with me for imagined slights.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"But did you have to go shake Michael?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think people listen to shaking."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Then they will be shaken more.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then why do it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<So they will learn.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think," comments Mary, "that your brother is implying shaking them will not make them learn."

Permalink Mark Unread

<After enough shaking it will.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly, possibly not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Silence.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we could try anger management classes?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am not angry.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"State-analogous-to-anger management?" suggests Mary.

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am not in any state analogous to anger.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"When you and Maurice start school, shaking won't be tolerated."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I will not start school.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought you were going to be with Maurice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I will accompany him. I will not attend the institution.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still no shaking."

Permalink Mark Unread

Silence.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zaneta said we should use our words when people are Mistaken."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I tell them they are Mistaken. They insist on their mistakes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes you could explain better."

Permalink Mark Unread

<If people desire more complex explanations they should ask for them.>

Permalink Mark Unread

A few days later, Maurice starts to stir.

Permalink Mark Unread

The Morrígan knew this well in advance, of course, so she's by his side then.

Permalink Mark Unread

As are Levi and Maurice's parents.

"So Maurice will have powers when he wakes up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<He will.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He opens his eyes and looks around, blinking a bit. "Hello."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Hello.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice's parents naturally attempt to hug the life out of him. He eventually gets a look at his skin. "Huh. Weird. Pretty, but weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are beautiful.>

Permalink Mark Unread

Maurice's parents are a little surprised by Morri's statement. Maurice is just a bit flattered. "Thank you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are welcome.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He is allowed out of bed. He then proceeds to notice the tips of his wings. He squeals and flaps them excitedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

<You can use them to fly.>

Permalink Mark Unread

He does so. Morri is hugged. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She accepts the hugs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Levi is hugged, too.

"Um, why are you hugging me? I didn't do anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cause you're my brother too now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Satisfaction.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should go flying," he says to Morri.

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

First however, there are many examinations to be made of Maurice, all perfectly routine. At some point he accidentally turns Morri red.

Permalink Mark Unread

She permits this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you like being red?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I am indifferent to colors.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. You're pretty any colour."

Permalink Mark Unread

Agreement.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wing buddies!"

Permalink Mark Unread

More agreement. Something akin to fondness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eventually, Maurice and Morri are let outside to fly a bit, Maurice's parents watching nervously.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not really fly—she telekinetically moves herself. That's splitting hairs, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

As it happens, this is also how he flies, although his TK is limited to his person. He screams in delight as he swoops past Morri.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does not produce sounds but broadcasts satisfaction.

Permalink Mark Unread

He grabs her by the arm and sort of air dances with her.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is graceful and stoic.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't really smile do you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I do not move my face.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I was wondering about that."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"And why is that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

<I have no reason to.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Smiling is how people know you're happy."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, don't be silly, you're happy sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

<No.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"I heard you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

<Heard me what?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be happy."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You did not.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's...different happy."

Permalink Mark Unread

<You are mistaken.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only mostly."

Permalink Mark Unread

Confusion.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The part of you that's like us. I can hear it."

Permalink Mark Unread

<I see.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's small, but important."

Permalink Mark Unread

Indifference.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm gonna help you be nice to people who aren't me and Levi."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Yes you are.>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because if you're mean life will be harder."

Permalink Mark Unread

<Whose?>

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone's... including mine and Levi's."
