fell into you like the sea
dragon gf = best big spoon. that's just logic.

She spends a little time with Villanelle and Ellie enjoying the beach, but... There's a humming under her skin. Not quite a fire - perhaps more like static. Lightning barely contained.

So, she says a short goodbye to her brief friends, promises to try to meet back up before Villanelle and Ellie leave on Serenity, and heads out.

She saw a strange winged creature in the distance earlier, off to the southwest. It was the most unusual thing about the surface so far, so...

She sets out to where she last saw it.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's gone by the time she gets there, of course, and flying creatures don't leave a trail. It was headed northerly, back towards the seaside, last she caught a glimpse. There are more cliffs there, though these are steeper and less hospitable to people unable to fly or walk on vertical surfaces and without the sandy beach at the bottom that characterized the immediate area of Serenity's landing zone.

There are also several large cave entrances in the cliffs, conveniently sized to shelter a large creature.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can sense chakra, which extends at least some to this strange world - which hopefully means she'll notice any large concentrations of interestingness before she gets too bored wandering the caves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Interestingness such as perhaps the clusters of magicful eggs loosely concealed at certain spots in the floor, guarding paths and intersections much the way she would use traps and tripwires?

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely one kind of interestingness.

She deftly avoids them as she wanders, of course, muffling her scent and sound and the movement of air due to her passing, and wrapping her chakra tight under her skin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the floor of the cave vanishes from underneath her.

She falls into a larger cavern, wide and tall. Blobs of magical flame adhere to the ceilings and walls, casting the space in a flickering orange glow. Most of the space, generous as it is, is taken up by a vast reptilian bulk covered in dark scales. A horned head, bigger than the girl's body leans in close to examine her, sniffing to take in her scent.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lands on her feet, and doesn't move as the creature sniffs her - even stops muffling her scent.

"You caught me."

(Her sharingan is active, of course, and she examines the creature in turn.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(The creature is very magic. Has a distinct resonance with the earth, seems to be infusing it in some fashion, now that she looks at it from this perspective...)

"But what have I caught," it rumbles. "Little human, sneaking around my home with less noise than a mouse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps a cat," she purrs.

(She smells like lightning, like the heavy dry wind of oncoming thunderstorms, like smoke and ash and flame. And, yes, rather like a cat.)

"And whose home have I had the honor of sneaking into?"

(She's also very magic.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"My name is Ellisaria, of the Black Dragonflight. What mischief do you bring with you, little cat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Curiosity alone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Curiosity, hm. A bold sort of knowledge seeking, to traipse so blithely into a dragon's lair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm a bold sort of cat, who's been very richly rewarded already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed, for you are still alive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I've met someone very interesting, and exceptionally pretty."

(Somehow her brain kept screaming every time she noticed Ellie was pretty, but - she's not having that, right now.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Dragonish huff.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles, just barely under the verge of hysterically.

"Your magic's interesting - this whole world is - which is why I went looking for a closer glimpse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will assume, then, that you had something to do with our extraterrestrial visitor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll inform them they aren't as invisible as they thought."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The ripples were subtle, but detectable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Detectable to skilled magic users, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And those in tune with the natural order."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you both, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. As a dragon, I am Azeroth's guardian. As a being five thousand years old, I have had ample time for study."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - That's older than my world has writing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed? It is young, then, or else poorly kept."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug. "There's been wars, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There will always be wars. For writing to be lost entirely takes a cataclysm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, there's reasons I left that world."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrrrrr.

"Does this world have libraries?" she asks instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to - see what's written here. What an older civilization can produce."

Permalink Mark Unread

Dragonish hum. "The nearest and best libraries would be in Silvermoon City or Dalaran. Neither are welcoming of outsiders, but Dalaran at least has a human population."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unwelcoming of outsiders seems a poor trait for a center of knowledge."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Elves are distrustful of humans and mages are wary of anyone not themselves a mage. With good historical reason, in both cases."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Learning from you seems more likely to be pleasant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps. It has been some time since I had a student."

Permalink Mark Unread

Teasingly: "A couple millennia?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"More or less."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps I'll be a refreshing break, then."

"And I could teach you something of my world and its magic, in return."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would like that. Agreed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then the bargain is struck."

"Do you have any immediate needs, little cat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"None right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. As you can see, my home is not designed for creatures such as you. Adjustments must be made."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not a normal human, you know. I hardly need stairs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I surmised as much from your facile entrance. I was referring more to the scale of the rooms, the construction of the wards, and the lack of appropriate furniture."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The large rooms are nice, and I'm used to very sparse furniture. I probably have a futon and a few mats in my storage scrolls, actually. And I wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable with something smaller."

"But if my presence interferes with your wards, that's another matter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would be shifting to a form similarly sized to you. That is more convenient for teaching."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All the time?" Awwwww but Hisame likes big Ellisaria.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, not all the time. But more often than I do now, which is almost never."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not sure I'd spend much time human-shaped if I had other options."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It has its uses. Dragons are overall superior, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very clearly so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Such clear thinking is an admirable trait in a student."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee.

"Good that I'm already impressing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It bodes well for your future success."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And our future work together, that you recognize it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed. Then let us begin."

Permalink Mark Unread

And in a flash of magic, Ellisaria is suddenly only slightly taller than the little cat, rather than enormously taller.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least she's still tall, though.

"Pretty in any form, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, little cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

"So what can your magic do, Ellisaria?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Many things, limited only by one's supply of mana. Creation, destruction, control of the elements, summoning servants, animation, healing, enhancement, levitation, teleportation..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little more than mine - I can't teleport, and levitation is mostly a side effect of other techniques. Though my magic is limited as well by skill, physical condition, mental acuity, the balance of physical and mental strength, and some innate traits like affinity or bloodline. And access to materials and specialized knowledge, for some subfields."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That does sound more complex."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most people can't handle it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Few here as well bother to take conscious control of their power."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

"Even among those who seek power, those who find it are exceptionally rare."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you are one of those exceptions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like a demonstration?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you would be so kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here and now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How destructive do you intend to get?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a range of possibility, depending on how much you want me to show off. But the most powerful shinobi can rearrange the landscape decently well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I prefer the landscape here to stay as it is. Why don't you start small?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"As you wish."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her eyes gleam crimson as she meets Ellisaria's gaze.

She tries a light probe, a gentle veil of genjutsu over the dragon - nothing major nor even subtle, given she's currently just making herself look like she's sparkling.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this illusion?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. A very basic one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting."

"It is not perceptibly different than reality, to my senses."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It takes a lot of training to catch them, and knowing you're under a genjutsu - an illusion technique - is easier than breaking one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How powerful can they be?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Some people never break out from the most powerful. They can be fully immersive,  including altering perception of time. The absolute most powerful can affect thoughts and actions relatively directly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Concerning. If I discover you have placed such a thing upon me, I will kill you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You'd be right to."

(She was supposed to be showing off not suddenly on the verge of a breakdown.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you recognize that, then I doubt it will be a problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem to be in distress."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unpleasant memories."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Related to this technique?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To the more powerful versions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What other tricks do you have, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum.

Well, shadow clones, and she can show off wall walking and great speed and the less destructive elemental techniques...

Permalink Mark Unread

The speed is most impressive to Ellisaria. She can cast mirror images and manipulate the elements with equal facility to the little cat's demonstration. This she proves by summoning up some earth elementals, animated chunks of earth and stone pulled from the walls of the cavern and bound with magic. They can act and fight independently with at least a basic degree of skill, which makes them good target dummies.

Permalink Mark Unread

Are her mirror images solid, capable of operating independently, capable of using their own techniques, and return their memories to her when destroyed?

Permalink Mark Unread

Everything except the memories.

Permalink Mark Unread

A very useful type of technique, isn't it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Depending how habitually one engages in subterfuge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Subterfuge is the lifeblood of many shinobi. Though, Hisame finds that's one of the most boring uses of shadow clones.

Permalink Mark Unread

What others does she find more interesting?

Permalink Mark Unread

Well... To start, her shadow clones learn everything she does, and can use the sharingan to memorize vast reams of information quickly, same as she can -

It'll take a very large library to entertain Hisame for long.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does comprehension follow memorization so easily?

Permalink Mark Unread

It feels like the memorization follows comprehension, for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

That certainly does sound convenient.

Permalink Mark Unread

And not just for studying - her clones can experiment with dangerous techniques, or travel short distances, or coordinate with her on projects...

Permalink Mark Unread

Slightly more versatile than a mirror image, then. She stands corrected.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "They're me. Physically more fragile, with less raw power - my chakra stores are split among my clones - but me all the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

"An interesting technique."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enjoyable and useful, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of the greats, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Certainly up there."

"Would you like a demonstration of a few benefits?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're not worn out already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll need to get a lot more involved to wear me out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So noted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interested in trying?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not in here. Let us move outside."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fun." She'll let Ellisaria pick the arena.

Permalink Mark Unread

She transforms back into her natural form and leads the way to the entrance, launching herself out to skim across the wavetops before circling around higher to head inland.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and - almost on a whim, exhilarated and wanting to keep up - activates the Mangekyou willingly for the first time since she was imprisoned.

Susano'o unfolds around her, brilliant and sleek - a shifting, glowing thing, made of dark red chakra that flickers like fire, an enormous humanoid she sits at the heart of - one with a cat's face under an ornate helmet, a cat's tail emerging from the complicated armor, four arms ending with cat's paws holding an ethereal bow, sword, and dagger - and enormous black feathered wings that gleam like a raven's emerging from its back.

Her wingspan isn't quite as wide as Ellisaria's - but she's actually decently close, and she takes off into the sky with powerful beats, pursuing Ellisaria.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite the clever trick, cat not-so-little."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not quite as teachable as the rest, though." Swoop!

Permalink Mark Unread

She tucks her wings and dives low, skimming the treetops.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's new to flying - but a quick learner, and that looks fun -

She follows after, and then tries to pull ahead.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can go out a little further than Ellisaria had planned. No need to cut this race short.

Permalink Mark Unread

Certainly not on her account.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Then through a sufficiency of twists, turns, dives, and tricks, they come at last to a flat-ish area midway up a mountain that will make suitable arena. Ellisaria settles in for a landing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her Susano'o folds in as she lands, wrapping closer around her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This location will serve. There is nothing important in a radius of several miles. Do try to contain yourself within that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be good." Mostly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see." Her tail lashes. "Now, where to begin..."

Permalink Mark Unread

A dance, or a fight?

Permalink Mark Unread

Let's say a dance, til they get used to each other's movements.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then a dance it is. (Her chakra flares again.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria uses her entire body as her weapon, teeth and claws and tail and fiery breath, dangerous in all directions. She stakes a claim to a certain space, and owns it. And more, she does not do so alone. Constructs of stone summoned from the earth, elementals of fire and ash animated from the trail of her breath, expendable soldiers to guard her flanks and further harry her foe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Black fire that eats even stone trails from her wings, and black lightning crackles around her blades and arrows, and she responds to Ellisaria like everything they're doing was choreographed well in advance.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's certainly a more even match than she was expecting.

She stops holding back a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

The girl matches her, step for step.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

For both of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

The battlefield is a smoking, gouged ruin by the time their dance is finished.

Permalink Mark Unread

She winds to a stop with a sweeping bow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria dips her head.

"Well run, little cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well danced, big dragon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you feeling any more worn out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The edge has certainly been taken off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the best dance partner I've ever had, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Leaving your own world was the right decision, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As was coming here."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Languid stretch!

"You're even more beautiful when you're flying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, really?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really," she purrs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Big stretch, showing off the full flex of her muscles and wings.

"You have interesting taste, little cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria might have just taken her breath away, so.

"I'm an interesting woman."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I begin to find how much I agree with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria extends a leg to lightly brush her with a claw.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny pleased shiver.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you feeling sufficiently exercised, little cat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"In some ways."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, a low bass rumble.

"Do you require this space to sate your remaining appetite?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm very flexible, so no, not particularly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will take us back to my lair, then." She bends down, presenting the side of her neck. "Climb up."

Permalink Mark Unread

She does so, using chakra to secure herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then off and away.

Ellisaria will kindly demonstrate what it's like to experience some of those flight tricks as a passenger instead of a pilot.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, delighted.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh. Good.

And at last, back home.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ride's over all too soon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps. But certainly there will be other days.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's looking forward to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

What would the little cat like to do next?

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps explore her more interesting tastes...

Permalink Mark Unread

To one of her sleeping rooms, near the back of the cave complex.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle.

She doesn't actually know what she's doing here, with any combination of body plans, but that's what exploring's for.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria can guide her, in whatever configuration of forms she prefers.

Permalink Mark Unread

The current one to start...

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll have quite a lot of ground to cover. But Ellisaria will make sure she misses nothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most excellent indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She actually gets tired by the time Ellisaria's tour is concluded.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria's perfectly content to lounge here if she is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then the dragon will curl up around the little cat, a warm, rumbling cushion.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the little cat will sink into a contented, nightmare-less sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cozy.

Ellisaria has her wards and her sentinels, so feels comfortable dozing off herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Zzzzz.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria lets her sleep.

She instructs her elemental servitors remotely to rise and begin preparing a room for her guest to feel more comfortable in, in case she wants it, to dust off the library, to fetch some fresh food...

Permalink Mark Unread

Her guest doesn't sleep for very long. Certainly not as long as most humans do - but she wakes up looking refreshed all the same.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sleep well, little cat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well." Languid stretch.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Are you hungry or thirsty at all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "A bit of both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have food prepared, if you care to get up."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be convinced." Stretch! And to her feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria will shift to human form to guide her. (The better to enjoy some of the food herself.)

Permalink Mark Unread

What's available?

Permalink Mark Unread

Meats, cooked, raw, or salted. A variety of local fruits and vegetables. A little fresh bread, some rice. Spring water, elven wine, dwarven whiskey.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's definitely most interested in fruit, followed by vegetables then bread then finally cooked meat with the air of someone focusing on 'probably I need protein and iron.'

For a drink - she pulls out a scroll and unseals a block of tea and a kettle and two cups.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tea?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very good tea. Would you like some?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would, if it's no trouble. The climate here is not suited for growing it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely tragic. I'll have to build a large stock when I get the chance."

And: tea!

Permalink Mark Unread

She savors it. The first cup she's had in a long while.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll need to correct Ellisaria's deficit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very generous, little cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only with special people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you consider me to be among those?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"So far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good to know."

"Have you a name, little cat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Not one I care to claim."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps you need a new one, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might damage my air of mystique." But it's a nice thought.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps one in Draconic. An unknown language to mortals."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A wonderful suggestion... Though I can't say I know the tongue either."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fortunately, I do." She tilts her head, thinking. "To begin with the most obvious candidates... 'little cat' would be moxtcalti." Her voice turns into something not quite human to pronounce the word, voice low and growling, rasping across the consonants.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Shiver.) "A lovely word... Though are you sure you want to share your little cat with the world?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you prefer that stay hidden?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmmm... Perhaps. A little secret for a little cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh. "Very well. We will look elsewehere for inspiration, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I still Iike draconic as a tongue, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are a few more words you might like your name to mean, little cat?"

Permalink Mark Unread

(Shiver again.) "Hmmm... Beautiful, fierce, secret, shadowy, strong... Or fire and lightning are always very aesthetic..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sjachletni, the shadowflame, like the dark fire you wield. Dastudr, strength. Lightning, itpro. A secret is irthos, unspoken. Beauty would be lerovup, to be fierce j'nah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she likes the sharp hiss in that first one. "Sjachletni," she purrs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"An exquisite choice. Now, to turn the base into a name. Were you a drake, we would add the suffix -ia. For a sworn drakonid, it would be -ak or -aka. This would translate as 'she of the-', more or less, with connotations of innate dragonishness. As you are not a drake and nor have you sworn to me, neither of those rules apply. Sjachletni is a compound word, so it would be fair to leave it as is. Though often in that case we translate it back into the common tongue..."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Thoughtful hum. "Sjachletni is fine for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A pleasure to meet you then, Sjachletni."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny wiggle! "The pleasure is mine, Ellisaria."

Permalink Mark Unread

Cute.

"You will certainly turn the head of any other dragon you meet, introducing yourself by that name. Shadowflame is thought of as a magic peculiar to the black dragonflight, though a demonstration of your variety will show the difference readily enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you demonstrate your version of it for me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course." Ellisaria breathes in, then exhales a thin streamer of fire. It's purple tinged with black rather than orange or yellow, and as she makes the ribbon dance across the air, there's a faint sound like a scream just on the edge of hearing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Practically a melody.

"Beautiful," she breathes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The fire, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cheeky brat," she laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you like it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not the worst."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a good look on you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Preen!

"Matches you well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It has been many years since I have kept a companion. I am glad that I have not broken my streak for one that does not match me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Charmed giggle. "I can say the same - though for a much smaller 'many.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Little years for a little cat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And big years for a big dragon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Permalink Mark Unread

Softer smile. "You're worth the wait."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria leans across the table to give Sjachletni a kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee!

(She'd thought she'd feel weird about a human face, but... She knows who Ellisaria is, so.)

Kiss?

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. (There are things to do with human bodies, as well as dragon ones.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll need another introduction...

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria remains a willing teacher.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a talented one.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is a pure pleasure to live up to the expectations of an eager student.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she'd be hard pressed to find a more eager student than her little cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't see the need to try.

Permalink Mark Unread

She better not, or her little cat might feel quite abandoned...

Permalink Mark Unread

Wouldn't want that now, would they.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'd be very tragic.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria disprefers tragedies.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're in agreement then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Deserves another kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

A sign of their accord.

Permalink Mark Unread

And many more kisses to strengthen it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect.

Permalink Mark Unread

They are.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have lots of time to prove it, if Sjachletni plans to stay for the long term.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She does, she thinks.

(It's a weird thing to realize.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Ellisaria will work on altering the wards to take that into account.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't mind reshaping your home around me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's about time I made some changes in any case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm good at changing things up, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do let me know if you have any ideas for alterations in the layout."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Plenty, actually..."

Permalink Mark Unread

They can start working together on plans, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sjachletni enjoys stretching herself - and the opportunity to get creative about decorations.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria tends toward a more utilitarian setup, so Sjachtletni has plenty of opportunity there.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can restrain herself a little if her and Ellisaria's tastes clash. (Though she'd rather not.)

Permalink Mark Unread

As long as she's not planning to rip out the roots of the mountains, Ellisaria will deal.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wouldn't. Promise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they will have no problems.

Except, of course, for the marauding troll warband that shows up about a week and a half later.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hardly a problem at all.

"Will killing them all cause issues for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not in the slightest. That is in fact the only way to deal with them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, good." Tiny wiggle. "I'll have some fun, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Try to leave the forest intact."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The added challenge will be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We aim to entertain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You succeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See that you do so as well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No worries there." Languid stretch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Approving hum.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're more than welcome to watch the show."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Outside, then, to plan her attack.

Permalink Mark Unread

She knows the terrain fairly well by now. The trolls have set up camp in a hollow to the southeast. There are a few dozen, perhaps forty or fifty total. The camp is organized around a central bonfire, fortified with wooden walls and sharpened stakes cut from the surrounding forest, and the beginnings of pit traps being dug. The shamans are daubing the walls and warriors with ritual paint, and the hunters lope out in wider and wider loops, scouting the area.

Permalink Mark Unread

The hunters are the easiest pickings, then - a good way to stretch herself after all this time without a proper kill.

She stalks them, of course, follows them through the forest - traps them in illusions - scares them, before finally cutting them open.

Permalink Mark Unread

Their response to the fear is to whoop and shout about it, alerting their fellows.

Permalink Mark Unread

Or to think they do.

A bit hard to actually shout, when you're wrapped so tightly in illusion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas for them, then, who die without knowing the same fate awaits their tribesmen.

She can get through six before a cry goes up from the camp. The absences have been noticed. The spirits have blessed their hunt, and a Silent Death now stalks them, according to one shaman. That which cracked the sky and scarred the earth is now within their reach.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh dear. Whatever shall she do, with the element of surprise so ruined?

She moves silently, quickly - faster than human eyes can track, wrapping herself in illusion - to a perch above the head of the shaman who so named her, and loops a sharp garrote wire around his neck.

Permalink Mark Unread

A careless move digs the wire into his neck and he starts to choke, cut off mid-rant.

Permalink Mark Unread

She channels a hair of lightning through it - enough to make him dance.

Permalink Mark Unread

And dance he does. (Also seems to be dying of this slightly less quickly than a human would be.)

There are gasps of alarm and astonishment among the other trolls, and they begin wildly looking about for the source of this attack.

Permalink Mark Unread

A touch of chakra - and the wire cuts through his neck - and she stands, removing the illusion hiding her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's de Death! De Death!"

The shamans start chanting spells and the warriors throw their spears.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and dashes forward, drawing her sword and cutting a bloody swath through her enemies.

(She keeps playing with them, of course. They're hardly a match for her actual skill.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The best of them are high genin or low chunin in terms of martial skill. Clearly practiced, but not elite enough to challenge her. They also die pretty hard- a debilitating wound for a human only slows a troll.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gives her more playtime.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have to be careful about drawing playtime out too long. A troll on the verge of death can get a surprising burst of speed and strength.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing she can't handle with ease.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well done indeed," Ellisaria says, rejoining her once the last troll is dead.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was fun enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very kiss!!! And eager wiggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This has gotten you excited, I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very." Another hungry kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm.

"Clean up your mess first, little cat. I've no desire to let these bodies rot where they lie."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and forms a few shadow clones, and sets them to - carefully - burning away the bodies and structures.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

"It seems a celebration is in order, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very much so," she purrs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To the victor go the spoils. What would you claim, Sjachletni?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You."

"Your dragon form." And then, with her excitement sweeping away her fear, her reservations - "Holding me tight." She steps even closer. "Hurting me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uncommon, for a human. But a request I am more than willing to oblige."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria transforms, grabs Sjachletni in her claws, and takes off into the air in one smooth motion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle! (And wiggling, just enough to challenge Ellisaria's grip.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria tightens her claws enough that the sharp edges dig into her skin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gasp and tiny moan.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll have five bloody lines cut into her by the time Ellisaria returns them to the lair. (More, if she struggles.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she absolutely struggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

No less than she expected.

When they get to the room, Ellisaria pins her down flat on her back and licks gently at the bleeding cuts with the tip of her tongue.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeeeep!

She arches into Ellisaria's tongue, as best she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll earn herself a few new cuts with that.

"How hurt do you want to be, little cat?" Ellisaria asks, pressing a little more of her weight onto her foot.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shall I crush your bones? Filet your muscles? Roast your flesh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle! "All of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bold as ever. Are you sure you can heal yourself of that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

She huffs a laugh-

-and breathes out a lick of fire with it to kiss Sjachletni's face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Moan.

Permalink Mark Unread

What a lovely sound. Ellisaria would like to hear more of that.

Fortunately, as a firebreathing magic dragon, she has many, many tools to apply to this problem.

Permalink Mark Unread

And her little cat has so very many sounds to give her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Delicious. She could just eat her little cat right up. In fact...

Permalink Mark Unread

!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Sjachletni fits very neatly into her mouth, it turns out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Chomp chomp fire breath.

Then toss the little cat up and snatch her out of the air a few times.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Her healing is, amazingly enough, keeping up with this. Though something about being in Ellisaria's mouth makes her a bit - well. Hazy. And her healing does actually need to be actively maintained.)

Sjachletni very slowly starts accumulating injuries faster than she's healing them, though it'll be a little bit yet before she's in a dangerous zone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria starts slowly winding down to compensate. She doesn't want this to be the only chance she gets to play with her cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems to strike a good balance psychologically for Sjachletni, too - keeps her just under the edge of overwhelmed - until she's finally too out of it to keep going without drawing too deeply on her reserves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Ellisaria can curl up around her after that, keeping her cozy and warm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect. (Warm dazed snuggles.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes indeed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

And, not long after -

A little paper bird approaches Ellisaria's home.

Permalink Mark Unread

Clearly magical, but it is neither hers nor Sjachletni's.

What does this bird have to say for itself?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hi!" it chirps, in a feminine voice. "I'm Villanelle - your guest traveled with me a bit on Serenity, and I wanted to let her know we're heading out soon, since she said she'd want to say goodbye before we left."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, the other alien visitors. I had wondered about you. I shall inform her of your message. Will she know where to find you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She should - we're bringing the ship back to where we dropped her off."

"And we have time to chat, if you'd like. My companion's pretty interested in dragons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Naturally. Dragons are superior beings, after all."

Permalink Mark Unread

Laughter. "She's probably at least part dragon, which definitely concurs with that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting. I look forward to meeting the both of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you at the beach, then!"

Permalink Mark Unread

And Ellisaria will go inform Sjachletni of the message.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Time's passed quickly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It tends to do so when one is not keeping track of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially when life's enjoyable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just so."

"Are you planning to accept the invitation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

"They were good companions on the journey. And - "

"They - did something - really important for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I will have to thank them appropriately."

Permalink Mark Unread

Thoughtful nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What was it, that they did for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Villanelle broke me out of mind control."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The genjutsu," she surmises.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see." She nuzzles Sjachletni.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny giggle.

"I wasn't very pleasant company right after, I'm sad to say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem to be remembered fondly enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're both kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enough to see through the thorns to the adorable kitten beneath."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe the thorns are part of the kitten."

(...She doesn't know if she wants that to be true.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then I will be thankful for my thick scales."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're useful overall."

Permalink Mark Unread

Laugh.

"Shall we go?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria can fly them, if Sjachletni will be her guide.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's delighted to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then away they go. Ellisaria is quite looking forward to seeing this ship, and meeting the other aliens.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're waiting outside the ship, standing on the beach - Serenity is fully uncloaked, and Villanelle's got all her normal disguise illusions off. She waves when she spots the dragon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria dips and circles in response, coming down for a landing.

"Hello there."

Permalink Mark Unread

Now that's a dragon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Showy bow!

"Hello to you, too. I'm Villanelle, and my lovely companion is Ellie Drake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A pleasure. I am Ellisaria, of the Black Dragonflight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'm going by Sjachletni, now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a pretty cool name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's in draconic - Ellisaria helped me with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's it mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shadow flame."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems pretty appropriate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It suits me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm- glad you found something that does."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And somewhere." (And someone, though she's not ready to say that just yet, not the way she thinks she means it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for bringing me here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're welcome."

"I'll miss you, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small blush.

"...I'll miss you, too. But you can come back to visit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll see about putting it on the schedule."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't strike me as the scheduled type."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe just a floating agenda item, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When you have the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll make sure it happens."

"Can I hug you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for letting us rescue you," Ellie whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was my pleasure."

Permalink Mark Unread

She releases the hug and takes a step back, glancing to Ellisaria.

"So you found a dragon, huh? What's that like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Little giggle. And, in a whisper: "She's - big. Cozy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does she give better hugs than I do? Be honest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry to say - her hugs are more to my taste."

"But you give very excellent hugs, for a human."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have to live with that, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And maybe you'll figure out how to transform into a dragon someday."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would definitely come back to show you that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll hold you to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then it's a date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I look forward to it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heee.

Permalink Mark Unread

Little squeeze.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to introduce us? Maybe she can give me some tips."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh.

And she turns to Ellisaria to introduce Ellie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sniff.

"You smell like dragon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we think I might be part-dragon. Dragon ancestors, or something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm. More than that, I think. I do not recognize the flights, but I scent very little human in you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could dragons ever be born or get stuck in a human shape?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would take active intervention, in this world. But you are foreign."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - It's possible with most dragons in the swath of the multiverse tied closest to the Astral Sea. Relatively rare, but, there've been a few cases."

"For one - a few rare spells can permanently alter someone's form. That's insanely hard to do to a dragon, but you can stack effects, and a newly hatched wyrmling won't be as naturally resistant to magic, nor as capable of actively resisting. And though polymorphing a wyrmling and abandoning her on a backwater would be weird, it's a big multiverse."

"Also... Some dragons can just change shape by themselves, naturally or through magic - and you could in theory get a wyrmling to shift to one form and forget how to change back. And the outcomes of reproducing while not in your natural form are weird and complicated, but most dragons who've shifted naturally will produce magical offspring that take the shape they're in at the time. Usually that's half dragons, but two dragons have ever reproduced together while neither was dragon-shaped - they'll produce a wyrmling with a non-dragon default shape."

"Though that gets very weird if they weren't shifted from an innate power - I've only ever heard of that one coming up with prism dragons, which are a rare kind of dragon known for entertaining themselves by manipulating societies and people, which can't shapeshift without external magic."

"Dragons that can shift into a humanoid without spells... Of the true dragons, that's silver, bronze, gold, all the imperials, and dungeon. Silver dragons are the big ones known for sleeping around, though honestly dungeon dragons are better shifters and more inclined to it, they're just rarer. There's others too - havoc, nightmare, dream, and astral of the outsider dragons, and in theory a sinborn dragon could change shapes, but those can't actually reproduce normally without very significant magical intervention."

" - Anyways, an astral dragon would be more likely than most others to end up in a weird corner of the astral sea, but Ellie doesn't super strike me as part outsider dragon? Those tend to be - kinda obvious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So, I'm either some kind of kidnapped baby dragon or what, like a double half-dragon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dunno." To Ellisaria: "Do you smell anything on her that isn't a dragon?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Sniiiiiff.

"I do not."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "So, yeah, probably one of those two - or an arcane experiment of some kind, or there's a mystery dragon type with a really weird standard life cycle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Neat. I've always wanted to be an experiment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can introduce you to some girls in need of broader horizons next port, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie giggles and sticks her tongue out at Villanelle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

(...They're cute. It's a bit easier to appreciate that, now.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellisaria nuzzles her little cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a kiss for her own dragon.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Awww.)

"It's been- really good to see you, Sjachletni."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same, for you both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Try not to have too much fun before we visit again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That I can't promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you make sure to have plenty of exciting adventures to tell me about when next we meet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stories for days."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Safe travels to you both."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks." And her own quiet goodbyes with Sjachletni - more meaningful eye contact than anything -

And then she and Ellie are off.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Interesting people," Ellisaria says. "I do hope the whelpling discovers the truth of herself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah - it promises to make for a very interesting story."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed. And you will be here with me to hear it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can't imagine being anywhere else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good," she rumbles. "Are you ready to go home?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then home it shall be.
